It is generally difficult for young people to present strong ties. In such cases, the consular office may consider the applicant’s education status/grades, long-range plans, parents’ status, prospects in the home country, previous travel to other countries, etc.

• Photocopies of the first page, last page and remarks pages of your current  passport . 
• Applicants who do not have sufficient funds of their own to support themselves during their proposed stay in the United States must present credible evidence to show that they will be supported thereby some interested person; such evidence should reflect the ties between applicant and sponsor which form the basis for the latter’s assurances of extending support. You should present all original documents  sent to you by your sponsor in the USA.  If someone is sponsoring you, you don’t have to show enough financial means by yourself to take care of your expenses for your trip to the US However, you should still take the property, employment/profession, and financial documents, as described below, to help you prove the strong ties to the home country.  As much as possible, avoid getting the affidavit of support from people who own small businesses such as gas stations, grocery stores or motels. Consular officers believe that these people employ people illegally and may employ you also. You are supposed to be going as a tourist, and not for work.  If you have photographs with you and the sponsor is in them, please carry them. 
• Self-Sponsored Applicants Self-sponsored applicants may show evidence of financial resources through property, employment/profession, and financial documents, as described below.  For parents visiting a child resident in the US, you need to provide the documents listed in the ‘Identification, Relationship and Legal Status Documents’ section in  sponsor documents . 
• You have a residence outside of the US that you do not intend on abandoning. This can be shown via deeds to real estate. These help to persuade the consular officer that you have strong ties to your home country and are likely to return there.
• Proof of property such as a house, shop, godown (warehouse), etc. Take the original ownership papers. If you have a loan on any of these properties, the original papers may not be with you. In that case, take whatever documents you have.  Also take the property estimate given by the Chartered Accountant that may include items such as land, flat, jewelry, etc. in addition to the real estate property.
• Photographs of your house, office, factory, shop or other properties. 
• Personal affidavit(s) regarding the property. Business owners should show how much they earned last year. Indicate ties such as having elderly parents you need to take care of or a child whom you need to help after your return with wedding arrangements. Also, describing the nature of the trip and details of the itinerary  is helpful. Sample affidavit for father Sample affidavit for mother   It is better to make a separate affidavit for each person, rather than a combined one for both of them. These affidavits cannot be on stamp paper, but instead on the CA’s letterhead.
• If you are employed, get a letter from an employer that shows the details of your position, salary, length of employment, the period of authorized vacation; and the purpose of your US trip. Also, carry pay slips from the three most recent months.
• If you are retired and get a pension, your pension book. 
• If you own a business, bring the company registration certificate and its income details.
• If you are running a business in partnership, bring your partnership agreement. 
• If you are employed or have a business, bring your visiting card (business card). 
• If you hold any social or professional designations in the home country, bring proof related to that. 
• A No Objection Certificate (NOC) letter and Leave Sanction letter if the applicant is in Government service or with any of the Armed Forces.  If you are employed in a private place, your leave sanction letter.  Sample No Objection and Leave Sanction Letter  
• If you hold any post or designation in professional, religious, or fraternal organizations, proof of the same. e.g., lions club president or secretary, trustee of the temple etc. 
• Latest income tax returns for last 3 years (i.e., Form 16 or Form 2D). You should take the originals.  Some people pay income tax only in the year in which they are applying for the visitor visa, even if they never paid income tax in their entire life. They think that if they show that they are paying income tax, they will get the visa. It is not that simple. 
• Some bank balance for at least a few months before going for a visa. Please note that simple bank letters showing simply the bank balance is not acceptable. You have to also take the past few months (say 6 months) of statements with you, or the pass book. 
• Other financial papers e.g., bank fixed deposits, shares (demat account statements), life insurance policies, bonds, etc. 
• Family photographs of close family.
• Documents about the family (e.g.,  marriage certificate ,  birth certificates  of any children, etc.) 
• Your family tree chart that shows your close relatives’ names, ages, professions and the addresses. 
• If you are applying alone and if your spouse has been to the US before, bring the original passport of your spouse, but only if your spouse is currently not visiting the US
• If you have traveled outside of the home country in the past, your photographs taken during your visit(s) are recommended. 
• If you have traveled to the US earlier on any visa and came back to your home country on time, show the proof as per stamps in your passport or copies of plane tickets or boarding passes. 
• If you have been to the US earlier and applied for an  extension of stay , you must present a Form I-797 Extension of Status Approval Notice during your subsequent visa interview. 
• If any of your close relatives have been to the US and have returned on time, proof of the same.
• Cover letter highlighting the nature of the visit, reason for travel, an outline of your plans in the US and explaining why you will return to the home country (family ties, employment, or similar binding obligations). With the tourist visa, you need to show that you have the means to return to your home country. You also need to show a lot of things. You need to show that you have strong ties to your country. But, showing that you do have money in your bank account, you do have a savings account and you do have the means and resources to not only come to the United States and be a tourist, but more importantly, the money to return home is what's important. You want to show that you can afford the expense of coming to the United States.

If you are financially struggling, it will be assumed that you intend to be an economic refugee and plan to overstay a tourist visa in search of illegal work, which is an easy denial. To supplement your bank statements, another great strong tie is a stable income, from a job in your home country. If you are taking time off work, a letter from your employer authorizing time off for your vacation is another signal that you intend to return to your country.

The number one thing that will get you denied for the tourist visa , at least in our experience, is not being able to convince the adjudicator that you have no interest in staying in the United States. And one of the ways that you do that is show that you have a good life where you're at, you are making good money, you own property, you have kids who are not coming with you, and other things like that.

There is no denying the fact that Indians are increasingly visiting the US. It is also evident from the number of visa applications Indians are filing every day. To visit the US, Indians need the B-1/B-2 visitor visa , where B-1 covers trips for business and B-2 is for those who travel to the US to seek medical treatment or simply for pleasure. However, in most situations, the B-1 and B-2 visas are combined and issued as one visa, the B-1/B-2 .

But do you know what is the biggest mistake that often delays a visa application ? It is the incomplete submission of documents. If you too are planning a visit to America, but are not sure which documents to present, here is a quick list that will help you.

Mandatory Documents Required for a US B2 Visa

• One digital photograph as well as its hard copy, as per specifications.
• DS160 US Visa application confirmation page. It should be stamped at the Visa Application Centre (VAC).
• Original passport, valid for at least six months beyond the applicant’s expected arrival date in the USA.
• All old passports.
• Fee payment receipt.
• Printout of US Interview appointment letter.

Supporting Documents

• Valid Identity Card
• Proof of sufficient funds to support your US trip.
• Evidence of purpose of the trip.
• Evidence to show your strong ties in India. It ensures the interviewing officer that you have good reasons to come back to your home country.
• Proof of occupation, including letter of employment verification, if employed, an NOC, if working for the government , and proof of business ownership and finances, in case you are self employed.

The requirement of supporting documents may further vary based on the reason for which you are visiting the US.

• Invitation card or evidence of the event, if visiting the US to attend a family event.

Visiting the US for Medical Treatment

• Letter from your physician in India, stating the diagnosis of your medical condition.
• Evidence of acceptance from a licensed medical facility in the US for treatment.
• Proof of sufficient funds to pay for medical treatment, including bank statements.

How much Bank balance is required for your Visa Application

One of the common question asked often by our customers is, “How much money should I show in my bank account?” and to this we have only one answer, “The amount of money in your account must be sufficient to support all the expenses of your trip”. This will majorly depend on how long is your trip going to be, whom are you travelling with (number of family members) and how much are you planning to spend for your trip? Assume that you are travelling to Singapore and your Singapore trip will amount to Rs. 43,000/- (approx.), then you must show the Singapore High Commission that you have that much money and a bit more for additional expenses (shopping, food etc).

Planning an international trip is not about getting the visa and landing in the country. No country will ever issue you a visa in the first place, if you don’t have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family (even if not accompanying the main applicant). One of the key elements for a successful visa application for any country lies in the strength of your financial documents. Hence furnishing proper proof of financial stability is vital and your bank statement is the basic requirement of a visa application for any type of visas, be it tourist, business, visit, work or student visa. A well maintained bank statement with adequate bank balance is a guarantee that the applicant has enough finances to pay for all travel costs as well as has the funds to meet the cost of living at the time of stay in that country.

Embassies all over the world are very strict about the financial documents you need to submit for your visa application. The money you are required to show for your maintenance can be in your bank account, in parent’s accounts or in a joint account with your name.

Also, do not assume that just because you have a lot of money in your bank account, this will be acceptable – the money needs to be held for a set period of time and the documents need to be in a very specific format. Some applicants at times tend to borrow money from their friends or relatives for the visa application, without being aware of the repercussions it will have on their application. Please remember, a sudden transfer of a huge sum just before applying for the visa can arouse suspicion in the minds of the Visa Officers, leading to a visa rejection.

It is really important that you understand how to meet the financial requirements before applying, as it can be very easy for your visa application to be refused if you get it all wrong.  Below are the general requirements for submitting the bank statement:

• The bank statement should be printed on the letterhead of the bank and duly signed and stamped by the bank official authorities. The statement must display the bank account number, applicant’s address and other details of the applicant for verification purpose.
• The name of the applicant must appear on the statement and should be printed by the bank only. The name should not ben handwritten by the applicant. If the bank statement of the parents or spouse is provided, their name should display on the statement accordingly.
• Majority of the countries require original bank statement with the bank seal and online bank statements are not accepted.
• The bank statement must show the exact dates of depositing and withdrawing money. Embassy officials check every cash transaction done by the applicant. It is usually advisable to submit the bank account statement which shows your monthly income in the form of salary, pension etc.
• The Applicant needs to submit statement of last three (3) or six (6) months. The bank documents must be recent – the date of the closing balance or the date of the most recent transaction must be less than one (1) month old at the time of applying.
• The bank statement should cover the full account history of the last three (3) or six (6) to meet the minimum requirements of the Embassy or Consulate. If the history is incomplete the applicant should provide an explanation letter.
• The bank balance should be equivalent to the trip cost. It needs to be clear that you have held a minimum balance of at least the required amount to cover all your expenses in the visiting country.
• You have to show the required minimum amount of balance to cover living costs even if you have already paid for your accommodation (booked flights , hotels , tour package in advance) or don’t have any accommodation costs (because you will be living with friends/relatives). You cannot deduct this from the total amount of money you need to show in your bank statement.
• If the applicant is a minor, student, dependent (spouse) or unemployed, he/she can provide the bank statement of the sponsor (parents or spouse).
• Original birth certificate (for children) / Marriage certificate as proof of relationship (for spouse).
• Original signed and dated sponsorship letter from the sponsor taking ownership of the trip expenses.
• If the applicant is the legal representative of a company and is travelling for solely business purpose, he/she should also provide the bank statements of the company along with his/her personal bank statement.
• Credit card statement is not a substitute to bank statement and is not accepted.
• There should be no sudden last minute cash deposits in the account.
• It is highly recommended to submit additional financial documents to prove your strong financial status, for instance, fixed deposits, property agreement, investments, share certificates, stock or any other financial statements.

Each country visa has its own financial requirement – make sure to check the Embassy website or consult an experienced Travel Agent .
