Hauck Dream n Play Travel Cot review

Quick and easy to put up, this cot wins in the DIY stakes. But it loses marks for its comfort levels, which we felt should be more for the price. Good for those short on space, it’s easy to transport, too.

The Dream n Play is a basic, easy to assemble cot that's ideal for those with less space as it's narrower than average, plus the longer length means it’s good for taller babies.  It’s light, but also very flimsy, so our testers questioned its quality and comfort which they felt should have been greater for it’s mid range price ticket.

The cot has good carry handles for transporting it. It’s a shame that the mesh sides looked like they’d rip easily, and the mattress material was very noisy, with one tester reporting that it rustled loudly every time their baby moved, keeping them awake.  We think that the Dream n Play is best to use for one-night stays, maybe at the grandparents or for very short trips away. It’s extremely easy to assemble, but very basic, and not the comfiest model on the market.

Your child can comfortably sleep and play, you can easily change your baby’s nappies and transport the folded cot wherever you wish, allowing maximum flexibility right from birth. For the best comfort we recommend the separately available fitted sheet Bed Me 120 x 60 cm. Our hint for an easy assembly! Put up the folded bed on its feet and pull it apart. First unfold the short side parts and then the large ones until they properly engage. Only then pull the middle of the floor and then the whole floor down until it reaches a flat and stable position. Note on unfolding and folding

Please follow the steps so that the joints/springs of the travel cot are not under tension and possibly damaged.

When unfolding, place the folded cot on its feet and pull it apart. First fold up the short sides and then the long sides until they are audibly engaged. Only then press the bottom down.

When folding, proceed the other way round. First pull the base upwards, then unlock the short and then the long side parts.

It doesn’t quite include the kitchen sink, but the Hauck Disney Baby Starlight travel cot is one of the best-equipped on the market – if you like Winnie the Pooh you’ll love this in spite of its size.

The first thing you’ll notice about this travel cot is its size, and much of the bulk comes from the extras, such as the changing table and accessory unit. The cot itself is a straightforward travel cot, which opens and closes much like any other and has a sufficiently padded mattress that fastens in place via Velcro straps underneath. It seems bigger than average, so would make a good playpen.

The black fabric looks smart and unisex, while the smiling Winnie the Pooh on one of the mesh sides will either make you coo with delight or cringe, depending on how you feel about cartoon characters on your nursery equipment. The Disney theme is continued in the mobile that clips onto one corner – it also plays a tune to soothe your little one to sleep.

This may be a weighty number, but this is overcome by the fact that the wheels can protrude from the carry bag allowing it to be pulled along, suitcase-style using the handle at the other end. The main central handle has padding to make it more comfortable to carry.

Some of the weight is down to the extras: there’s a changing table that clips on top, plus an accessory unit with sections for nappies, wipes and other sundries.

There’s also a bassinette that clips onto the frame, raising the height of the mattress to make a perfect newborn bed at a height that means you won’t break your back to pick up your little one. The mattress is secured in the bassinette by Velcro pads and feels sturdy when in place.

Wheels at one end make manoeuvring it around the room a breeze.

A small point, but the lullaby unit on the mobile can be switched off, so you don’t have to keep listening after your baby has dropped off.

What to watch out for

This is a well-equipped travel cot, but do you really need all those extras? If you’re likely to travel a lot, the answer is probably yes, but if you’re just going to use it occasionally, a more basic model may be better.

If you’re using it with all the extras in place, taking it all apart to dismantle can take a while – and you need to be careful how you pack it all back in, otherwise the wheels won’t be exposed in the bag and you won’t be able to pull it along.

Clicking most things in place is relatively easy, though the changing table was rather stiff, and the accessory unit feels less sturdy than you’d like.

Opening the cot, it was hard to get the sides to click open. What this really lacks is pockets – there’s one tiny one at one end, that’s it. The fabric is a little on the harsh side, but at least will wipe clean easily. The sheer size of this cot means it will take up a fair proportion of your boot.

This is a well equipped, some might say over-elaborated, travel cot, which is sturdy and will do its job well, either as a cot or a playpen. The bassinette makes it good for newborns and Pooh lovers will adore it. However, it is quite weighty.
