13 Fun Things to Do in State College, PA in 2024

State College, Pennsylvania is a vibrant and lively town nestled in the hills of central Pennsylvania. Known as the home to Penn State University, this college town offers activities and attractions for visitors year-round. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a nature lover, or a history buff, there are plenty of things to do in State College, PA .

For sports fans, a visit to Beaver Stadium is a must. Home to Penn State Nittany Lions football, this iconic stadium holds over 100,000 spectators and offers an unforgettable game day experience.

We spend weekends in Happy Valley often in the fall for football games and usually find ourselves in town during other seasons a few times per year, too.

If you’re not a sports fan, State College is surrounded by beautiful hiking trails and parks, such as Rothrock State Forest and Mount Nittany, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures and breathtaking views.

For those who are interested in history and culture, the Palmer Museum of Art is a must-visit attraction. This museum is home to an impressive collection of American and European art in central Pennsylvania.

Best Things to do in State College, PA

State College also boasts a vibrant downtown area, filled with charming shops, restaurants, and cafes, where you can indulge in delicious dishes and explore unique shops. Happy Valley makes a great weekend getaway from Pittsburgh or Philly!

These are our favorite things to do in State College, PA . Take advantage of some of these great spots during your next visit.

1. Tour Penn’s Cave by Boat

If you’re looking for a truly unique tour experience in central Pennsylvania, you must visit Penn’s Cave in nearby Centre Hall.

What sets Penn’s Cave apart is that it offers the only boat tour through an all-water-filled cavern in the entire United States. As you step aboard the flat-bottom boat, you’ll be transported into an underground world, surrounded by giant rock formations

As part of the tour, you’ll venture through the entire cave and end up outside the cave on the other side, on Lake Nittanee when the water levels permit. We were happy for a break in the rain, so that we could enjoy a short float around the lake before heading back into Penn’s Cave.

After exploring the beauty of Lake Nittanee, the boat tour takes you back inside the cave. Your tour guide will show you points of interest along the way. We won’t give away all of the surprises and ruin all of the fun!

If you’re planning to take this boat tour, have a jacket or sweatshirt, no matter what time of year. The caves are always 52 degrees! This is a great activity no matter what the weather is like outside, even on rainy days. 

An important note : This tour is not accessible. To board the boat, you’ll have to descend nearly 50 steep concrete stairs. While there are railings on each side, there is no other way to board the boat. You will also have to climb back up these same stairs after the tour is finished. 

2. Explore the Beautiful Arboretum

Within the picturesque campus of Penn State University, the Arboretum at Penn State is a hidden gem that showcases botanical beauty.

Spread across several acres, this garden is a delightful escape into a world filled with vibrant colors, aromatic scents, and diverse plant life.

Depending on the time of year, you can find various trees, shrubs, and flowering plants in full bloom.

Wander through the rose gardens or along the ponds and pollinator plots filled with flowering plants and fruit trees. The rose gardens are one of my favorite spots when they’re blooming!

The Overlook Pavilion is another must-see spot in the Arboretum. From this vantage point, you can admire views of the surrounding campus. This spot is so beautiful that it often hosts weddings.

The Arboretum is open daily from dawn to dusk, and you are free to wander through the grounds for as much or as little time as you’d like. There is no fee to visit.

It’s particularly beautiful when the flowering plants are in full bloom, and it’s a great free activity to enjoy while visiting State College.

3. Sample Delicious Craft Beer

We’re always on the lookout for a new spot to sample a few craft beers when we’re out and about, and you’ll find some fun spots in and around State College. Each offers its own unique brews and flavors.

Antifragile Brewing Company is a newer one in town, established in 2022. It’s made a big impression so far, though! We loved their Fluffy Little Puppy IPAs. The kombucha also gets great reviews!

Happy Valley Brewing Company is also a gem in the craft beer scene of State College. With a focus on using local ingredients, they produce a range of high-quality beers that perfectly capture the flavors of the region. Housed in an old barn on the edge of town, the spot is cozy and easily accessible from Route 322. HVBC is also a delicious brunch spot.

The popular Voodoo Brewing location in State College is also just up the street from Happy Valley Brewing Company.

For a little change of pace, you can head north about 10 miles to historic Bellefonte. You’ll find Axemann Brewing housed in a giant old industrial building. You can always find a solid brew and a game on one of many TVs. We especially like their fall beers!

Just across town in Bellefonte, you’ll find Robin Hood Brewing Company. While the outside of the building doesn’t look like your typical eclectic craft brewery, their beers are always good. The best orange creamsicle beer I’ve had to date was at Robinhood, and I’ve been on the hunt for some time.  They serve a variety and have plenty of food options, so come both hungry and thirsty.

4. Hike Mount Nittany

Mount Nittany is a popular hiking destination near State College, Pennsylvania, drawing both locals and visitors. The hike is rewarding with great views of the town, university campus, and surrounding area.

The trailhead is easily accessible on the edge of town.

The hike up Mount Nittany is known for its varying levels of difficulty, with several trail options to choose from.  Along the way, you’ll encounter a diverse range of terrain, including wooded paths, rocky outcrops, and a couple steep but short ascents.

If you begin hiking the loop to the left heading clockwise, you’ll begin with the rockier climb. You’ll also save those iconic views of the town and Beaver Stadium for the last overlook.

However, if you’re short on time and just want that one iconic view, take the trail to the right heading counterclockwise. You’ll navigate a stretch of switchback-type dirt trail to reach the best views. Once you reach the top, the hike around is fairly flat.

The hike is especially stunning during the fall when the foliage paints the landscape with vibrant colors.

It’s important to come prepared with appropriate footwear, water, and snacks, as you can spend several hours exploring the overlooks and connector trails.

5. Enjoy a Sweet Treat at Berkey Creamery

If you find yourself in State College, Pennsylvania, be sure to indulge in the delicious treats and dairy products at the renowned Berkey Creamery. Anyone who is familiar with PSU is also familiar with this tasty spot.

Known for its rich and creamy goodness, the ice cream from the Creamery comes in a variety of flavors that vary by the day, satisfying any sweet tooth.

The fun flavors, including Grilled Stickies, Scholar’s Chip, Lion Tracks, Mint Nittany, and Whiteout, among others, are sure to keep you on your toes and rotate often. I love the Grilled Stickies, but the Whiteout is unique and intriguing. Grab a cone to enjoy on the patio or a pint to take home with you.

The Creamery also has a great on-site cheese selection. Using a science-based process, the Creamery crafts delectable cheeses that are both flavorful and unique. Whether you prefer a sharp cheddar or a creamy spread, these cheeses are all made on campus.

6. Explore Central PA Waterfalls

If you crave the beauty of the great outdoors, then the nooks and crannies surrounding State College have something special in store for you – we’re talking about some great waterfalls! 

All within an hour of State College, you can explore and enjoy these 3 lesser-known waterfalls:

• Rosecrans Falls
• Yost Run Falls
• Kyler Fork Falls

Rosecrans Falls is just a short distance from Interstate 80 at the Loganton exit (exit 185). Structures being built have recently changed the area and it’s certainly not as remote as it used to be. However, the waterfall is still beautiful for now, and you’ll get a 2-for-1 view. 

Yost Run Falls and Kyler Fork Falls are hidden gems along the Chuck Keiper Trail in the Sproul State Forest. They’re not far from each other along the trail, but they’re much more remote feeling than Rosecrans Falls these days.

A little further south, you’ll find Trough Creek State Park , home to Rainbow Falls. In addition to the waterfall, there is a swinging bridge, balanced rock, and a beautiful creek to explore. It’s one of our favorite lesser-known state parks in Pennsylvania .

7. Visit Black Moshannon and Explore PA’s Largest Bog

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from State College lies Pennsylvania’s largest bog in Black Moshannon State Park .

Take a stroll on the hiking trails that lead you around the bog, through the central PA woods, and along the lake’s shores. The surrounding landscape is unique, with its characteristically dark-colored water, a result of those tannins lurking in the plants.

When you visit the largest bog in the Keystone State, you’ll probably encounter a variety of Pennsylvania’s unique plants and critters. Keep your eyes peeled for nesting bald eagles, busy beavers, and waterfowl that make the bog and its surroundings their home.

Whether you want to explore the short hiking trails within Black Moshannon, take a long-distance trek around on the Allegheny Front Trail , or enjoy a leisurely float on the lake, exploring Black Moshannon State Park is a great way to spend a day outdoors near State College.

8. Embrace Sports at the Penn State All-Sports Museum

Take a spin through the Penn State All-Sports Museum, located in the southwest corner of Beaver Stadium, while you visit State College. This place houses plenty of history and feats of Penn State athletes and Intercollegiate Athletics.

Even though it is in Beaver Stadium, the exhibits showcase archival images, exhibits, and memorabilia from each of the 34 varsity sports, including 3 that have been discontinued. Everything from football, wrestling, and basketball to volleyball, softball, and fencing is covered here.

As you dive into the exhibits, you’ll find yourself immersed in the victories, the rivalries, and the legendary moments that have etched themselves into the university sports history.

From championship trophies to game-worn jerseys, from vintage photographs to personal artifacts, the museum unravels the tales and triumphs of past and present Penn State athletes.

9. Appreciate the Palmer Museum of Art

When you’re in State College, you absolutely can’t miss the Palmer Museum if you’re an art lover.

Inside, you’ll find an extensive collection of American and European art – paintings, sculptures, photographs, you name it. There are over 10,000 pieces in the Palmer Museum collection.

You’ll have to wait until spring 2024 to visit, though. The museum is getting a whole new look and expanding.

It will now be housed within the Arboretum. Visit two spots in one whenever you explore next and include both outdoors wandering through all of the plants and trees in the Arboretum followed by the Palmer Museum.

10. See Historic Old Main and Wander Around Campus

If you’ve made your way to town for a campus tour or to visit your student, you’ll likely find yourself near Old Main.

Step into the heart of Penn State University in State College, and you’ll find Historic Old Main – an iconic structure that’s one of the most recognizable spots on all of campus. It originally housed the Farmers High School and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built back in the 1860s, Old Main holds its own special place in Penn State’s story. It has been home to all of the university’s administrative functions, shaping the university’s growth and development.

While newer buildings have taken over some of those roles, Old Main still stands tall, reminding us of where it all began.

Wander around Old Main, and you won’t be able to forget its stunning exterior and architectural features like the clock tower and those elegant columns. Inside, you’ll find plenty more history including frescoes commemorating the Land Grant Act.

11. Enjoy a Coffee and a Book at Webster’s Cafe

Nestled in the heart of State College, Webster Cafe is a cozy gem that’s as inviting as your favorite worn-in sweater.

Sip on a steaming cup of coffee and browse through well-loved used books, feeling like a treasure hunt.

It’s a slice of State College’s soul, a place where you can lose yourself in the pages of a good book while relishing the simple pleasure of a perfectly crafted cup of joe.

It’s the kind of place that beckons you to stay a while, where every corner has stories waiting to be discovered.

12. Ski Tussey Mountain (or Enjoy the Summer Fun Center)

Tussey Mountain, just 10 minutes east of State College, Pennsylvania, is not only a popular ski area in the winter but also a hub for recreational activities year-round.

The Tussey Mountain Fun Centre offers a range of exciting attractions for visitors of all ages. Try your hand at mini-golf, go-karting, batting cages, and even test your golf swing at the driving range.

For those looking for more adrenaline-pumping fun, the skating park is the perfect spot.

During the winter months, Tussey Mountain boasts over a dozen ski trails, catering to skiers of all skill levels. There are gentle slopes where beginners can learn and more challenging black-diamond trails for experienced skiers. If skiing isn’t your thing, you can still experience the thrill of sliding down the slopes by trying out snow tubing.

13. Catch a Football Game on a Fall Saturday

Attending a football game at Beaver Stadium on a fall Saturday is a thrilling experience that is on many sports fans’ bucket lists. As the home of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Beaver Stadium is an iconic venue where legacies are made and the roar of the crowd can be heard throughout Happy Valley.

With a seating capacity of over 106,000, Beaver Stadium is the second-largest college football stadium in the country. The atmosphere? Electric. Fans from all walks of life come together to cheer on the Nittany Lions.

From the student section to the alumni and local supporters, the camaraderie and passion for the team are contagious. For a really special treat, tailgate and enjoy the “Whiteout” game. Just don’t forget your white shirt, or you’ll stick out like a sore thumb!!

A fall Saturday at Beaver Stadium is not just about the game; it’s an experience. The sea of blue and white, the iconic Nittany Lion mascot, and the cheers of “We Are, Penn State” create an unforgettable atmosphere. We’re season ticket holders, so of course we love the game day atmosphere!

17 Fantastic Hikes in State College and the Surrounding Area

During my travels in PA, I’ve had a chance to do many incredible hikes in State College and Centre County, and I’m excited to share a few of my favorites with you.

Located in the center of Pennsylvania (hence the name “Centre County”), this area is incredibly varied with several great state parks, two huge state forests, and land owned by Penn State University, all of which are waiting to be explored.

So, the next time you are looking for great hiking near State College, here are the spots you’ll definitely want to check out.

Mount Nittany

If you have time to do only one State College hiking trail, make it Mount Nittany .

Mount Nittany is a revered spot in this part of Pennsylvania, both for its prominence in the landscape and for giving its name to the Penn State sports teams. A trail starts from near its base and heads up to the top of the mountain before doing a loop of the peak.

The trail is moderately difficult to the top but easy once it flattens out. Along the way, you’ll find great vistas offering views of the area around State College , including a fantastic view of Beaver Stadium.

Allegheny Front Trail to Ralph’s Vistas

The Allegheny Front Trail is a 42-mile backpacking trail through Moshannon State Forest in western Centre County, and you could certainly hike this entire trail if you had a few days. However, if you’re looking for a short hike in the area, consider the hike to Ralph’s Majestic Vista and Ralph’s Pretty Good View .

This hike is relatively easy as it has minimal elevation change and is one of the most beautiful hiking trails near State College that I’ve had a chance to check out. This is in part because of the two overlooks and a cool rock outcropping that you pass on this relatively short hike.

While you’ll come to Ralph’s Majestic Vista first, make sure to keep hiking to Ralph’s Pretty Good View because the second one is, somewhat ironically, much better.

The Trails in Shingletown Gap

Shingletown Gap is located on the northern end of Rothrock State Forest and is one of my favorite places to go hiking near State College.

There are a variety of trails here, though many of them aren’t overly well marked (so make sure to bring a GPS with you). None of the trails are overly difficult, though, and the first part when hiking along Roaring Run is both especially beautiful and relatively easy.

You can hike up and back along Roaring Run making the hike as short as you’d like, or you can combine trails together to make a full-day hike through this area.

Shingletown Gap is also home to some of the best mountain biking trails near State College, as well.

Bog Trail at Black Moshannon State Park

Black Moshannon State Park is crisscrossed with great trails (some of which are featured further down this list), but probably the most unique hike here is the Bog Trail .

The Bog Trail is an ADA-accessible boardwalk that passes along the shores of the park’s lake. The lake here is unique because the water is nearly black in color due to the vegetation that can be found within this bog.

This boardwalk passes through the bog and features several information panels to help you learn more about this unique landscape. There are also several great spots to get views of the lake and its wildlife.

Even if you are looking for a more challenging trail, if you find yourself in the park, this is definitely worth a quick detour to see.

Chuck Kieper Trail to Yost Run Falls

If you’re looking for waterfalls near State College, the Chuck Kieper Trail leads to both Yost Run Falls and Kyler Fork Falls , which are located only steps from each other in Sproul State Forest.

The hike to reach these waterfalls is about 1.5 miles one way and is relatively easy, though it can be muddy at times. That being said, the Chuck Kieper Trail is a 53-mile loop trail, so you could do a backpacking trip as well if you wanted to go on a longer hike in Centre County.

The two waterfalls here aren’t overly tall, but they are incredibly beautiful thanks to the moss-covered rocks that surround them. They also look shockingly similar despite being on two different streams.

Alan Seeger Trail in the Alan Seeger Natural Area

The Alan Seeger Natural Area is located south of State College in Huntingdon County but is worth the drive through Rothrock State Forest to check out.

An easy 0.8-mile trail loops through this 390-acre natural area and through one of the best-preserved strands of old-growth forest in Pennsylvania. Along the way, you won’t just pass tall trees, but also over several beautiful bridges and through tunnels of rhododendron.

It’s worth noting that a portion of this hike is on the 85-mile Standing Stone Trail, so this is another hike that you could extend should you be looking for something longer than I’ve listed here.

The Ruins in the Scotia Barrens

Located deep within the Scotia Barrens west of downtown State College, you’ll find the ruins of the community of Scotia. This was a thriving community in the late 1800s thanks to an iron ore mining operation owned by Andrew Carnegie.

Today, little is left, but you can still hike the easy trails to some interesting ruins, mostly from the industrial parts of the community. While this isn’t a long hike, the chance to walk around these pieces of our industrial past makes it an interesting one.

You are also walking through an interesting landscape that is actually its own microclimate. Plants grow here that you won’t find anywhere else in this region.

Indian Wells Overlook in Rothrock State Forest

If you’re looking for hikes near State College, PA that lead to great overlooks, this is the perfect one for you.

Indian Wells Overlook can be found about three-quarters of a mile from the road in Rothrock State Forest. Most of the hike is on the Mid State Trail , which is the longest hiking trail in all of Pennsylvania.

The hike to reach the overlook is a lot of fun on its own as it passes through some areas that require you to literally hike on the tops of boulders. So, while the hike isn’t overly difficult from an elevation standpoint, it does require some challenging footwork.

Once at Indian Wells Overlook, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking and uninterrupted view over Rothrock State Forest that is truly awe-inspiring. This is definitely one of the most beautiful scenic overlooks in Pennsylvania .

Penn’s Creek Rail Trail in Bald Eagle State Forest

It might seem a bit strange to include a rail trail on a list of the best hiking trails near State College, but the first portion of this trail from near Poe Paddy State Park is definitely worth a quick hike to see.

That’s because within a few hundred yards from the start of the trail, you’ll pass over an incredible bridge over Penn’s Creek and through the historic Poe Paddy Tunnel . These are spots that definitely shouldn’t be missed in Bald Eagle State Forest.

Beyond the tunnel, the trail continues for several more miles. Interestingly, despite being a rail trail, this is also part of the path for the aforementioned Mid State Trail.

Lake Trail at Shaver’s Creek

Shaver’s Creek Environmental Education Center is a parcel of land owned by Penn State and located in northern Huntingdon County.

There are a total of approximately six miles of trails within this land, with the Lake Trail, which encircles Lake Perez, being three miles in length. This trail offers a great chance to explore the beauty of this area and is well worth the distance. However, if you are looking for a much shorter loop, you can combine a small portion of the Lake Trail with the Boardwalk Trail for a hike of about half a mile.

While at Shaver’s Creek, make sure to also check out the fantastic nature center and aviary, both of which are free to visit.

Blueberry Trail at Black Moshannon State Park

The Blueberry Trail is another fantastic hike in Black Moshannon State Park. And, unsurprisingly, this trail is known for its many berries during the summer months (Don’t eat any berries you aren’t 100% sure about.)

This trail is a mile-long loop trail that starts and ends near the Mid-State Airport on the southwestern edge of the park. It passes through part of the park’s bog, which means that it can be muddy at times, but there are also wooden planks spaced along the trail as well to help keep your feet dry.

If you want to add some distance to your hike, this trail intersects with other trails in the park.

Nature Trail at Poe Valley State Park

Located deep in Bald Eagle State Forest, Poe Valley State Park is a beautiful and peaceful spot to check out.

There are several miles of trails within the park, as well as connections to trails within the state forest. However, the only loop hike entirely within the park is the beautiful Nature Trail.

This one-mile trail is a relatively easy hike but is quite stunning, especially the portion that runs along Big Poe Creek. In fact, this is one of my favorite short hikes in all of PA because of the beauty of this waterway.

Lake View Trail in Greenwood Furnace State Park

Greenwood Furnace State Park is located in a beautiful valley just south of the Centre County/Huntingdon County line. This park is home to several historic buildings, a popular lake (with a swimming area), and some great hiking trails near State College.

My favorite hike utilizes the Lake View Trail and several other trails for a short hike around the park’s six-acre lake. This trail is relatively easy, though there is a bit of tricky footing in a few spots.

Those looking for an even longer hike can use the park to easily access both the Mid State Trail and the Standing Stone Trail.

Penn’s Creek Rail Trail at Coburn Tunnel

While I mentioned the Penn’s Creek Rail Trail above, the section with the Coburn Tunnel is a totally separate section from the part with the Poe Paddy Tunnel, so I’m including it as a separate entry here.

The Coburn Tunnel is a historic railroad tunnel that’s located at a bend in Penn’s Creek just outside of Coburn, PA. Unlike Poe Paddy Tunnel, this tunnel hasn’t been rehabilitated at all, so the entrance and inside showcase the cut rock just as it would have looked over a hundred years ago. Just note that this also means that rock falls can happen here on occasion, so enter at your own risk.

If you do decide to enter the tunnel, you can hike through it, and then continue following the Penn’s Creek Rail Trail across a very narrow wooden bridge, continuing for several miles until you reach a portion of the creek with no bridge. If you’d rather not enter the tunnel, you can also drive around the bend to access the remainder of the trail.

Lakeside Trail in Bald Eagle State Park

At 5,900 acres in size, Bald Eagle State Park (not to be confused with the aforementioned Bald Eagle State Forest) is one of the largest state parks in PA. Somewhat surprisingly, however, there are only about 15 miles of trails within the park despite its large size.

The longest of these trails is the Lakeside Trail which is 5.6 miles in length and runs along the southern shores of Bald Eagle Lake. This trail is rocky and muddy in spots but overall is a fantastic hike. It can be accessed both from the park’s campground and from the boat launch on the southern end of the lake.

Those looking for a shorter hike can try some of the trails on the northern shores of the lake including the Skyline Trail and the Butterfly Trail.

Mid State Trail in Penn-Roosevelt State Park

If you are looking for a great spot to pick up the Mid State Trail near State College, either for a short or a long hike, Penn-Roosevelt State Park is a great spot to visit.

This small park is home to little more than a small pond, a few picnic tables, and a trailhead for the Mid State Trail, but this also makes it an incredibly peaceful spot to visit for a hike or a picnic.

Even if you aren’t looking for a long hike, the area around the park is neat to explore thanks to some historic stonework that was done here below the pond.

Star Mill Trail at Black Moshannon State Park

While there are a lot of great trails in Black Moshannon State Park (some of which I’ve noted above), I think my favorite medium-distance hike is the Star Mill Trail .

This two-mile-long loop trail can be found on the eastern side of the park’s lake. This is a very easy trail to hike but provides phenomenal views of Moshannon Lake and the forest that surrounds it.

You could also hike this as an out-and-back hike of about the same length if you just wanted to enjoy the portion of the trail along the lake.

Exploring Downtown State College, PA – Top Things to Do and See for Families and Road Trippers

Whether you are a family traveling through the area or a road-tripper looking to check out a new town, exploring downtown State College makes a fantastic trip. Located in the heart of Pennsylvania, State College is a college town with a warm and welcoming vibe. Replete with great restaurants, cultural offerings, picturesque scenery, and fascinating attractions, Downtown State College is a must-visit destination for those who want to experience all the area has to offer.

Eat at the Most Famous Restaurants

Calling all foodies! State College is a foodie paradise, with a diverse range of restaurants offering everything from authentic local dishes to beloved classic dishes.

Original Waffle Shop

For breakfast, the Original Waffle Shop is a must-try,  a State College tradition , from the Penn State students to alums and faculty, and the best waffles and pancakes in town. Topping for these sweet temptations ranges from cinnamon apple and chocolate chip to Georgia pecans. 

I had a spectacular Wisconsin white American cheese omelet served with two sides of my choice: home fries and thick-sliced toast. Patrons approve of the airy feel of the stylish restaurant; I approve of the  Original Waffle Shop’s  attentive customer service. 

Federal Tap House

Round out your food adventure at  Federal Tap House  for lunch, where you can enjoy upscale American food and excellent views from above the downtown Target store and its floor-to-ceiling windows. The menu includes gourmet pizzas, hearty appetizers, and tap beers. 

Take advantage of the crab fries – topped with crab meat and three-cheese fondue sauce – it’s a dish to die for! Federal Tap House’s pizzas and salads are super popular.

Allen Street Grill

You won’t want to miss  Allen Street Grill  at 100 West College Avenue. This bright and cheerful spot overlooks the gates of the Penn State campus. It serves up everything from classic dinner entrees to handcrafted cocktails.

Order the antipasti with Italian cured meats, cheeses, fresh-made focaccia, figs, and olives. Allen Street Grill’s mushroom soup or English pea salad are great pre-entree items. For my main course, I loved the mushroom linguine Carbonara with pancetta.

Save room for the dessert trio of sorbets, or enjoy a handcrafted cocktail or a glass of fortified wine at the lobby bar. Allen Street Grill is closed Sunday and Monday.

Visit the Arboretum at Penn State

Step into a world of natural wonder at the Arboretum at Penn State . The 17-acre gardens boast a wealth of stunning sights, including a tropical grove, towering trees, an event lawn, an oasis garden with a serene lotus pool, and a place to witness the majestic Holler Oak.

Be sure to visit the pollinator and bird gardens, great for photography, and the wondrous Childhood’s Gate children’s garden, buzzing with life and activity. Marvel at the Glass House and its collection of beautiful original potted plant displays; take a moment to relax by the fountains or capture moments of solitude throughout the gardens.

One of my favorite plants was the Oriental spruce tree, whose ends are tipped with vibrant pink.

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park

Pegula Ice Arena

Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park

Penn’s Cave is a natural attraction located in Centre County, Pennsylvania, approximately 20 miles east of State College. The cave is a limestone cavern that was formed over millions of years by the flow of water. The cavern is over 1,500 feet long and features several large chambers filled with stunning formations, including stalactites and stalagmites.

Visitors to Penn’s Cave can take a guided tour of the cavern and explore the beautiful underground formations, including a stunning crystal-clear lake that is over 100 feet deep. The tour is conducted on a flat-bottomed boat that navigates through the cavern, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with the natural wonders.

In addition to the cavern tour, Penn’s Cave also features several other attractions and activities, including a wildlife tour that showcases native animals such as bears, bison, and elk, and an off-road tour that takes visitors through the rugged terrain of the surrounding mountains.

State College Golf Courses

State College, PA is home to several beautiful and challenging golf courses, making it a great destination for golf enthusiasts. The Penn State Golf Courses, located on the Penn State University campus, offer two 18-hole championship courses and a 9-hole executive course. The courses are open to the public and offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

The Toftrees Golf Resort, located just outside of State College, features an 18-hole championship course and a variety of other amenities, including a pro shop and restaurant. Nittany Lion Shrine

The Nittany Lion Shrine is a famous landmark on the Penn State campus. The statue is a large bronze sculpture of a mountain lion and is a popular spot for taking photos. The statue is located near the Penn Stater Hotel and is a must-visit for any Penn State fan.

Tom Tudek Memorial Park

Tom Tudek Memorial Park is a beautiful park located just outside of State College. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing. There are several walking trails throughout the park, as well as picnic areas and tennis courts.

Discovery Space

The  Discovery Space  of Central Pennsylvania is an interactive science museum that is perfect for kids of all ages. The museum features exhibits on a variety of topics, including space, the human body, and robotics. Visitors can also participate in hands-on activities and workshops.

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is an annual event that takes place in downtown State College. The festival features a variety of artists and performers, as well as food vendors and other activities. The festival is a great way to experience the local culture and enjoy a fun-filled day with your family.

Black Moshannon State Park

Black Moshannon State Park is a beautiful park located just outside of State College. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and boating. There are several walking trails throughout the park, as well as picnic areas and camping facilities. The park is also home to a beautiful lake, making it a great place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Why fall is the perfect time to discover this small Pennsylvania town

When it comes to the state of Pennsylvania , thoughts often dwell on United States history and the rival sports teams flanking the eastern (Go Philadelphia Eagles!) and western (Go Pittsburgh Steelers!) edges of the state. But there is a great expanse between those two major cities, and right in the middle lies the charming, lively area of State College.

The area encompassing State College is peppered with quaint towns amongst farmland and sprawling hills. In the fall, the air turns crisp and the landscape is alive with color as autumn begins. Fall in State College, Pennsylvania is a time filled with beauty, and the change of seasons is the perfect time to head that way.

Penn State University Campus

Not to be missed is the campus of Penn State University (PSU) itself. Many of the buildings were constructed in the early 1900s, and great care has been taken to maintain the stately structures. The grounds are impeccable, which is no wonder as the school was originally founded in 1855 as an agricultural college. Filled with gardens and areas to sit and reflect, the campus is a stunning attraction. Visitors shouldn’t miss a photo opportunity with the large statue at the Nittany Lion Shrine.

The Arboretum at Penn State

Open from dawn until dusk, The Arboretum at Penn State is an outdoor botanical garden with free admission to explore the gardens, lifelike sculptures, and massive stone sundial. A favorite for kids of all ages is the children’s garden, which features kaleidoscopes, interactive exhibits, and the opportunity to stack rocks into a towering cairn.

Bald Eagle State Park

There is no better place to view colorful foliage than to head outside. Located about 30 minutes northeast of State College is Bald Eagle State Park , which is filled with opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and soaking in the views. The park includes part of Sayers Lake, which offers kayaking, fishing, and boat rentals for a water-level view of the changing leaves.

Penn’s Cave

To view the stalactites and stalagmites of Penn’s Cave , visitors board a flat-bottomed motorboat to learn how the structures are formed. Guides point out what certain shapes resemble, such as the Statue of Liberty, which is open to the viewer’s interpretation. The turn-around point for the cavern tour is Lake Nitanee, a small body of water with possible wildlife sightings.

Boal Mansion Museum and Columbus Chapel

The Boal Mansion Museum and Columbus Chapel is interesting for those who like to add a bit of history to their travels. The mansion houses the original belongings of the Boal family, who lived in the home for more than 200 years spanning 8 generations. The exhibits are not housed under glass, which gives this museum a homey feel. The Columbus Chapel, also on the property, was part of Columbus Castle in Spain and was imported and reconstructed in 1909. It contains European art and two small fragments of wood said to have come from the cross of Jesus. A stop by nearby historic Duffy’s Tavern to sample their Bavarian Soft Pretzel Sticks with maple butter dipping sauce is a delight.

Nittany Lions Football

Fall in a college town means football is a huge highlight. Whether cheering on the home team or a favorite rival school, taking in a Nittany Lions football game at Beaver Stadium is what fall in State College is all about for some folks.

Berkey Creamery

Locals get their sweet fix at Berkey Creamery , which involves PSU from start to finish. The milk comes from university cows, and agricultural students make the ice cream. Student-workers serve up seasonal fall flavors, which include Monster Mash (vanilla ice cream with cookie pieces and caramel swirl), White Out (white chocolate chips in popcorn-flavored ice cream), and Pumpkin Pie (pie pieces in pumpkin ice cream). There also are school-centric selections year-round such as Alumni Swirl and Peachy Paterno, named for the university’s longtime football coach.

Big Spring Spirits

If spirits – not the scary kind – are on the menu, head 20 minutes northeast to Big Spring Spirits. Libations are made on-site and the results are blended into tasty cocktails. It’s an ideal place to sample a fall-centric Pumpkin Pie Martini or Cinnamon Whiskey while feasting on locally-sourced fare.

Grilled Stickies

As one would figure by the sound of the name, grilled stickies aren’t necessarily healthy, but they are delicious. A local diner created these grilled, gooey cinnamon rolls, and the community caught on quickly – now they’re billed as being ‘world famous.’ The Corner Room in downtown State College is the official home of this delightful treat, served warm and often topped with ice cream.

Champs Downtown

State College is a great town for partying, and the night is alive and well at Champs Downtown . The upstairs is a typical sports bar, with TVs, gathering tables, and a large bar; but the real secret is downstairs. Filled with pool tables, arcade-style games, and foosball tables, the underground bar is the place to be.

Where to stay in State College, Pennsylvania

There are several accommodation options close to the PSU campus. Historic Nittany Lion Inn  has an on-site restaurant, and is within walking distance of downtown. Graduate State College , is known for its beautiful rooms designed in collegiate style. For an eco-friendly option, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle is within the state park and offers stunning views of the lovely colors of fall.

This time of year, the eyes of many in Pennsylvania turn towards State College and Penn State University. However, there's a lot more to do in and around State College than just football. Check out some of my favorite stops that are within an hour of this great destination.

Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion

Located in Boalsburg, Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion is often my answer when people ask me about my favorite find in Pennsylvania. The site consists of the rebuilt chapel from the Columbus family castle in Spain and a home filled with more amazing mementos that many museums. This is truly one of those special places that every history lover needs to visit.

Raystown Lake

Raystown Lake is the largest lake entirely within Pennsylvania and offers visitors some of the state's best scenery, boating, and fishing opportunities. The northern reaches of the lake are located near Huntingdon and give visitors a chance to fully appreciate this beautiful lake. There's also the Allegripis Trails which offer fantastic mountain biking along the lake shore.

Penn's Cave

The only all-water cavern in Pennsylvania, visitors to Penn's Cave ride through this beautiful cavern on a boat. Along the way, learn about the history of the cave and see some of the interestingly named formations inside. Outside the cave, the area is also home to a neat wildlife park, maze, and off-roading.

The Big Valley Amish Communities

Located in the Kishacoquillas Valley , better known as Big Valley, these Amish communities are centered around the community of Bellville. There are three distinct communities of Amish living here, each using a different color on their buggies. The most interesting of these are the yellow-topped buggies used by some of the Amish. It's quite fascinating to see such a conservative group using such a prominent color.

Piper Aviation Museum

Piper Aircraft were made for many years in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and today part of the former factory is home to the Piper Aviation Museum . Visitors can not only learn about the company's history, but also see some of their historic aircraft. Walking amongst these planes, some of which are truly one of a kind, offers a great look into the history of personal aviation in the United States.

Horseshoe Curve

Located west of Altoona, the Horseshoe Curve is one of the great engineering marvels in Pennsylvania. Completed in 1854, this curve allowed trains to travel over the Allegheny Mountains, greatly decreasing travel time from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The curve is still in use today and visitors can visit this site to learn about its history and watch as trains still use this curve to conquer the Alleghenies.

Greenwood Furnace State Park

Greenwood Furnace State Park might be the most beautiful and historic state park that you've never heard of. Nestled amongst the mountains of northern Huntingdon County, Greenwood Furnace State Park features a lake, several miles of hiking trails, a beach, and a historic district. The historic district was once home to an iron furnace and several of these historic buildings are still standing today.

Central Pennsylvania Tasting Trail

The Central Pennsylvania Tasting Trail is a collection of a dozen breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries located in and around Centre County. No matter what type of adult beverage you like, you're sure to find something delicious to try. I can personally vouch for Otto's Pub and Brewery, Robin Hood Brewing Company, and Big Springs Spirits Distillery. I can't wait to go back and try the rest.

Yost Run Falls and Kyler Fork Falls

Located in northern Centre County along the Chuck Keiper Trail, Yost Run Falls and Kyler Fork Falls are two of the most beautiful and isolated waterfalls in Pennsylvania. These very similar looking falls are located less than 100 yards from each other in Sproul State Forest. Hiking to these waterfalls offers a great way to experience some of the lesser-known outdoor beauty in this part of Pennsylvania.

Denny's Beer Barrel Pub

Yes, Denny's Beer Barrel Pub is a restaurant, but that's not why it made the list. Instead, Denny's made the list because it's home to some of the largest hamburger eating challenges in the world. Visitors to this Clearfield eatery can try to finish anything from a two-pound burger to a 25-pound behemoth. However, be warned, even the two-pounder is a massive challenge.

Hiking Near State College, PA: 10 Trails for Your List

Central Pennsylvania really has some amazing views and that’s never truer than when you’re hiking near State College, PA.

Whether you’re here for school, visiting a student, or just here for a fun vacation in Happy Valley, these trails are the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors.

These spots have a good variety of water features, gorgeous views, and overall scenic trails. Before you head out, make sure you check that the length and difficulty fit your fitness level.

You’ll also want to be sure that you carry the right hiking essentials with you and especially hiking snacks . It’s no fun being hangry on the trail.

Hiking was one of my favorite things to do in Bellefonte which is where I stayed when I visited Happy Valley. I hope you have as much fun as I did!

10. Green Shoot Trail to Bald Knob Ridge Loop

Look out for wildlife, 10 top state college hiking trails.

Here are a few great hiking trails near State College that should be on your list. This isn’t exhaustive of course but I’ve done many of these and the others have come highly recommended!

1. Mount Nittany Loop Trail

• AllTrails link: Mount Nittany Loop
• Distance: 4.8 miles
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Trailhead: Main Trailhead | Overflow Parking

Funny story about this one – I thought since it was such a popular trail that it was relatively easy. That is in fact, not the case.

About a quarter of the way up I was already huffing and puffing. It is rated as moderate after all. It’s only difficult for just over half a mile while you’re hiking up to the summit.

Once you reach the summit, most of the loop is up on top of Mount Nittany so you’re walking around on relatively flat ground.

Most people take the right fork of the trail from the trailhead with white blazes. This leads to the Mike Lynch Overlook where you can see State College and the Penn State Campus.

If you’re short on time, you can hike back down the way you came from the Mike Lynch Overlook, but I think the entire loop is worth doing. The trails are very well maintained.

The blue trail on the way down is a little less steep but rockier. If you have trekking poles then it’s a good idea to bring them. Especially in the winter when the blue trail can be very icy.

This is one of the most popular hikes near State College so it does get pretty crowded.

How long is the Mount Nittany hike?

The entire Mount Nittany loop trail is almost 5 miles long. If you want to hike to the Mike Lynch Overlook only via the white-blazed trail then it will be about 1.4 miles.

2. Little Flat Fire Tower via Mid State Trail

• Distance: Keith Spring to Laurel Run Road is ~5 miles
• Trailhead:  Start Point | End Point

This hike was one of the most scenic and unique that I’ve ever been on. Make sure you have a map of Rothrock State Forest with you when you set out on this one – Purple Lizard makes the best maps of the area.

I started my hike at the Keith Spring Trail, made a left onto the Mid State Trail, which took me up to the Little Flat Fire Tower. Then you can either take the Mid State Trail down to Laurel Run Road or hike the gravel forest road down.

I started down the Mid State Trail but came across a rattlesnake in the path. There were thick bushes on either side of the trail so I wasn’t able to go around the rattlesnake.

I decided to backtrack and hike down the forest service road instead. This is your reminder to make sure and watch your feet!

This hike was so cool because I got to cross Indian Wells. It’s a section of the trail where you’re just climbing over rocks. The views here are spectacular.

Along the Mid State Trail between Indian Wells and Little Flat Fire Tower there are also a few offshoot trails on your right that are short and lead to viewpoints.

Once you get to the fire tower, you can’t climb it but it’s pretty neat to see. There’s also an old cabin at the bottom but you can’t go inside.

Hiking in Rothrock State Forest is extremely rocky so I highly recommend a good pair of hiking boots and trekking poles.

It can also be a bit overgrown in places but nothing terrible on this hike when I did it. Having a pole was definitely helpful to push the limbs back and check for snakes though.

You’ll either have to have two vehicles for this hike or get someone to run shuttle for you. If you prefer to do a loop hike the fire tower then check out this route on AllTrails . That doesn’t take you over Indian Wells though.

After this hike you’ll probably be pretty tired and need a hearty meal. Check out some of these restaurants in Bellefonte to fuel back up.

3. Colyer Lake

• AllTrails link: Colyer Lake Loop
• Distance: 2.7 miles
• Difficulty: Easy
• Trailhead:  Parking Lot 1 | Parking Lot 2

If you want an easy walk with scenic views of a lake then the Colyer Lake loop is perfect. This is also great for hiking with younger kids.

There are benches periodically around this trail and it’s typically recommended to go counterclockwise.

It’s a well-maintained and marked trail and probably the most beautiful around sunset. Since it’s just a little hilly and only 2.7 miles, this is a pretty quick one. Should only take an hour or so.

Make sure when you’re searching for the destination in maps that you search for the Colyer Lake Parking Lot and not just Colyer Lake. Google Maps took me to private property at first so I had to backtrack to find the parking lot.

You can also use the link above and it will take you to one of the parking lots – there are two around the lake.

4. Bear Meadows Natural Area

• AllTrails link:  Bear Meadows Loop to Jean Aron Path
• Distance: 3.5 miles
• Trailhead:  Bear Meadows Parking

It’s only recommended to do this trail if you have waterproof footwear or if it hasn’t rained in a week or so. This is a wetlands area and there can be standing water and lots of mud on the trail.

If it has been wet lately then an alternative to taking the Bear Meadows Loop and Jean Aron Path is to hike the North Meadows Road up to Quinn’s Rock. Then you could take the Mid State Trail back to Bear Meadows Road and make a loop that way.

There are two different parking areas for the Bear Meadows Natural Area and it’s really a great place to see a wetland ecosystem.

Along portions of the Bear Meadows Loop and Jean Aron Path, they do have a boardwalk made using two boards side by side to help with walking through the wet parts.

While there aren’t stunning vistas here, there’s a rhododendron tunnel, lots of cool plants, mushrooms, and insects.

Bear Meadows is also close to the Alan Seeger Natural Area which is another great place for hiking near Penn State.

You may want to bring some extra socks and shoes in case the trail is wet. Socks make a great stocking stuffer for hikers at Christmas time!

5. Black Moshannon State Park

• AllTrails link:  Black Moshannon State Park
• Distance: Varies
• Difficulty: Varies
• Trailhead:  Park Office (Pick up map here)

About thirty minutes northwest of State College is Black Moshannon State Park. One of the main features of the park is a beautiful lake where you can take a boat out, rent kayaks, fish, or hike around.

This is a very popular place to hunt in the fall though so make sure to keep that in mind and wear colorful clothing – bright orange is what most people wear during hunting season.

If you’re looking for something short and scenic then the Bog Trail is perfect. It follows the lake and you’ll be on a boardwalk for most of the trail.

You can extend that hike by adding part of the Moss-Hanne Trail just note that it gets very wet, especially after rain. You’ll want good boots.

The Black Moshannon Creek Trail is another great option that follows the creek on the opposite end of the lake.

All three of these would be out-and-back trails but you could make a loop out of the Bog Trail, Moss-Hanne, Indian, and Hay Road Trail.

You can stop by the park office for a park map that shows all the trails and they also have clean bathrooms.

6. Allegheny Front Trail

• AllTrails link:  Allegheny Front Trail (entire trail)
• Distance: ~1.5 miles (just the section I did)
• Trailhead: Trailhead on Underwood Road

The Allegheny Front Trail is a 42-mile long-distance trail and it actually passes through Black Moshannon State Forest.

There are multiple scenic vistas along the trail and lots of access points. The section that I chose to do as an out & back hike was up to Ralph’s Majestic Vista.

It was short because I was running low on time but I parked along the trailhead at Underwood Road and hiked up that way. The trailhead was a bit hard to find and I used a combination of paper maps and the AllTrails app to find it.

Use the link above and you can see where the trailhead was on Google Maps. There are two different viewpoints pretty close together – Ralph’s Majestic View and then if you keep going you’ll find Ralph’s Pretty Good View.

It’s a beautiful section of the trail with lots of ferns, forest, and some big boulders. Very peaceful too – I didn’t see a single person!

This is on State Forest land though and another hunting destination so please be aware of the hunting seasons and dress accordingly.

Pro Tip : If you have AllTrails Pro then download the map of this hike. Bring a paper map at the least because I didn’t have cell phone service.

I wore my Free Fly shirt while on this hike and it’s one of my favorite long-sleeve hiking shirts for women . The fall day was really chilly so I’m glad I chose it!

7. Shingletown Gap

• AllTrails link:  Lower Trail to Shingletown Gap
• Trailhead:  Shingletown Gap Parking

This is probably one of the closest places for hiking near State College, PA – it’s only 12 minutes from downtown State College and just outside of Boalsburg!

From the Shingletown Gap Parking Lot you have access to sooo many different trails. I went on the Lower Trail which follows Roaring Run which is a beautiful, rocky creek. The AllTrails link above shows how you can make a loop out of this if you want a longer hike.

You can make multiple different loops from this hike or just go out-and-back on the Lower Trail. It’s very shady and a relatively easy hike on the Lower Trail.

There isn’t a ton of parking space at the trailhead so you may want to have a back up plan if the parking lot is full.

This is another trail located in Rothrock State Forest so of course it’s pretty rocky but well-maintained. There are beautiful rhododendron bushes that line the trail in some sections and they were still blooming in July.

8. Trough Creek State Park

• AllTrails link:  Copperas & Balanced Rock Loop
• Distance: 1.6 miles
• Trailhead:  Copperas Rock Parking | Suspension Bridge Parking

There are so many state parks near State College and Trough Creek is one that’s well worth a visit. One loop brings many people to the park because there are four different points of interest to see in a relatively short distance.

The Suspension Bridge, Rainbow Falls, Balanced Rock, and Copperas Rock are the main points of interest, not to mention a few beautiful vistas along the way.

To complete the loop, you’ll take Balanced Rock Trail, a small section of Abbott Run, Ledges Trail, Copperas Rock Trail, and Rhododendron Trail.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, stop by the park office and pick up a paper map or download the trail map from AllTrails.

There are two different options for where to park to start the loop. The Balanced Rock Trailhead is best if you don’t want to do the whole loop and just want to see the bridge, Balanced Rock, and Rainbow Falls.

It’s a pretty short hike to all three places and then you can turn around and go back the way you came or head out toward the Ledges Trail and take the whole loop.

The alternative is parking down at the Copperas Rock Trailhead. This way you’ll leave most of the exciting parts of the hike toward the middle/end. If I did it this way, I would take Copperas Rock Trail first and do the loop clockwise.

While I was there in early July the rhododendrons were blooming along the Rhododendron Trail and it was really beautiful.

Another popular hike in the park is a short one out to a historic cemetery but it’s on the opposite end of the park.

There are bathrooms throughout the park and picnic areas too. The trailhead at Copperas Rocks has some picnic tables right by Great Trough Creek so this is a great place to bring a sandwich.

Visiting this state park is one of the best things to do near Huntingdon !

9. Jackson Trail

• Distance: 5.3 miles
• Trailhead:  Jo Hays Vista Parking

Following the ridgeline of Tussey Mountain, the Jackson Trail offers multiple gorgeous overlooks of Rothrock State Forest.

While there isn’t a huge elevation gain, the amount of rocks along the trail and rock scrambles makes this a bit challenging. Good shoes and strong ankles are recommended.

There is a nice parking area along Mc Alveys Fort Road opposite the trailhead where you’ll also find Jo Hays Vista.

The trail is out-and-back for a total of about 5.3-miles. Be very careful in the winter because ice will make the rocks very slippery.

Both ends of the trail connect with the Mid State Trail so if you wanted more of a challenge, you can definitely add mileage to your hike.

This is definitely one of the most popular trails for hiking near Penn State!

• Trailhead:  Bald Knob Ridge Trailhead

If you’re looking for a quick, scenic hike then this is a great choice. This is another trailhead that can be a bit tricky to find if you’ve never been so be sure to prepare before you head out.

The trailhead for Bald Knob Ridge is right off Laurel Run Road in Rothrock and there is no parking lot, just a small pull-off.

When the trail forks, take the trail to the right to stay on Bald Knob Ridge. Once you make it to the top, you can either take a cut-through via the Clemons Trail to the Greenshoot Trail or if you have more time then keep going until you reach the next trail intersection.

This intersection will take you to the Sand Spring/Green Shoot Trail. Make sure you take the Green Shoot Trail and it will take you back around to where you’re parked.

It was pretty steep in sections hiking up to Bald Knob and I had to stop a few different times. It’s rated as moderate but I thought it was pretty dang tough.

Also note that it’s pretty rocky coming down so you’ll want to watch your step – this is especially true when the leaves have started to fall and it’s hard to tell what’s under them.

The trail leads up to a nice vista but it’s really just a peaceful walk hiking through the forest. In the fall, the blueberry bushes are also stunning because they turn bright red.

I can imagine this is a very popular hike when the blueberries are coming in during the summer!

There are multiple offshoots here so I recommend using AllTrails to stay on the right trail and avoid getting lost in the woods .

Tips for Hiking in Rothrock State Forest

Many popular places for hiking near State College are located in Rothrock State Forest so I thought I would offer a few tips for hiking in the area.

Wear Good Footwear

I can’t tell you how happy I was that I wore my hiking boots with ankle support. All the trails were very rocky and had lots of tree roots zig-zagging through.

You’ll want shoes with great traction and I prefer hiking boots that are a bit taller for a little more support.

The ones I wear are the Merrell Moab 2 Mid Waterproof shoes. While the waterproof boots aren’t as breathable, I prefer them because I HATE wet socks with a passion.

Bring Trekking Poles

In case I haven’t told you yet, these trails are rocky. 🙃 I used to think trekking poles were extra but they are beyond helpful.

Not only do they absolutely save your knees when you’re going downhill, but they are a life saver when the trail is a bit overgrown and you need to hold branches/brush out of the way.

You can also use the pole to tap rocks ahead of you during warmer months in case of snakes in the area.

Carry a Paper Map

My cell phone service was very spotty while I was exploring central PA. You can definitely download portions of the map to your phone but we all know that technology isn’t fail-safe.

It’s always best to have a physical back up. On almost all my hikes I carried a Purple Lizard map of Rothrock State Forest or a map of the state park that you can pick up at the park office.

Many of these hikes require you to link multiple different trails together so you don’t want to get turned around out there.

I’ve already mentioned that I saw a rattlesnake while out in Rothrock during July. Snakes are one of the main wildlife dangers to be aware of.

The other ones are black bears and ticks. Black bears are the least common but still dangerous.

Make sure you check for ticks after each hike or whenever you spend time in the woods. While these are common and you may not think anything about them, they can be very dangerous and carry multiple diseases.

Arizona: Tempe

Where the college experience influences the community culture

School and city intertwine in college towns , and the community surrounding a school is often a factor in college decisions. But there are two types of college towns, says Mike Salvadore, owner of Seattle, Washington-based 58 Stars Travel: those where the college is the main focus and those that are part of a much larger culture. "So much of what makes a college town is what it offers to students," Salvadore wrote in an email. "I’ve worked with different families when they have planned their college visits, and it’s important to understand the students' interests and what types of things they’ll gravitate towards." Using insights from higher education and travel industry experts as well as rankings from travel and lifestyle publications, here is a look at 10 destination college towns on the West Coast.

• Berkeley, California

Named one of the top 25 college towns in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure, Berkeley is home to the University of California, Berkeley . Located just north of Oakland, Berkeley offers a mix of big city and small town culture. Its proximity to wine country means easy trips to some of the country's best-known wineries, and its location next to the San Francisco Bay offers easy access to water recreation. The school is recognized as the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in 1964, and a culture of activism is still important to the student body. To the east, students can hike at Tilden Regional Park or stroll through the University of California Botanical Garden. Picturesque Strawberry Creek – a major reason the campus site was chosen in the 1860s – flows west toward the bay and is home to numerous native plants and animals.

• Corvallis, Oregon

Located about 84 miles south of Portland, Corvallis is home to Oregon State University. Close to parks, lakes and wildlife refuges, Corvallis offers more than 50 hikes along hilltop, forest and meadow trails, as well as mountain biking, kayaking, swimming, fishing, camping and birdwatching. Oregon was recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as the second most bicycle-friendly state in America, and Corvallis was recognized by real estate website Rent.com as one of the top college towns in Oregon. Corvallis is part of the Pacific Northwest's craft beer scene with popular spots like Sky High Brewing, Oregon Trail Brewing and Block 15. It's also surrounded by sustainable wineries and family-owned vineyards, adding wine tastings and countryside picnics to the list of things to do.

• Claremont, California

In many college towns, just one school may hold a strong tie to the community. In the Los Angeles suburb of Claremont, seven schools – known as the Claremont Colleges – help create a community dominated by the college student population. The schools are Claremont Graduate University , Claremont McKenna College , Harvey Mudd College , Keck Graduate Institute , Pitzer College , Pomona College and Scripps College . • Davis, California

Tucked away in the middle of Silicon Valley near the state capital of Sacramento is the University of California, Davis, and it's estimated that students make up about 40% of the city of Davis' population. The school is a driving force and cultural hub for what is a quaint, hidden gem of a town with good restaurants and cool bars, says Alex Boylan, executive producer and host of The College Tour, an internet-based television show that provides free virtual campus tours. The city's lively cultural scene includes galleries, art and design museums, theaters and farmers markets. The UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden spans the entire campus and features waterways, oak and acacia groves, trails, gardens and scientific collections. "Myself, my entire crew, we’re always blown away when we get there," Boylan says. "It’s beautiful.”

• Eugene, Oregon

Home to the University of Oregon , Eugene bills itself as “the running capital of the world” and “TrackTownUSA.” It’s not only home to UO’s famous Hayward Field and an epicenter for track and field , it’s also the birthplace of fitness giant Nike. Founder Phil Knight was a middle-distance runner at UO when he partnered with UO track coach and former Olympian Bill Bowerman to form the company. The city is also known for craft breweries and great cycling. Whether tailgating at a Ducks football game, hiking up the Ridgeline Trail System or visiting the numerous cafes and locally owned stores at the Fifth Street Public Market, Eugene makes for a hip college town, experts say. Travel + Leisure named it one of the top 25 college towns in the U.S.

• Monmouth, Oregon

Founded in 1856, Western Oregon University is one of the oldest universities in the state. It's roughly 65 miles east of the Pacific coast, and about an hour's drive from the Cascade Mountains. In a town of more than 11,000 people, WOU's nearly 3,800 students are a large part of the community. "From theater to concerts and art, everything that's around Monmouth is Western Oregon University," Boylan says. The campus is home to a 123-foot giant sequoia that's one of the largest Christmas trees in the U.S., and the surrounding area offers hiking, bicycling, camping, disc golf and fishing.

• Pullman, Washington

It's hard to tell where Washington State University ends and the city of Pullman begins, Boylan says. Known for its rolling hills that shift from emerald green to gold depending on the season, Pullman offers a picturesque landscape year round. Nearby Snake River offers stunning views and water activities, and outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy gravel cycling, trail running and waterfalls. In addition to the sports games and other on-campus highlights, such as the student-run Ferdinand's Ice Cream Shoppe, students have a variety of restaurants and shopping centers to choose from around town. Among popular spots are Dom's Donuts, Zeppoz and the Lumberyard, a collection of restaurants that also includes a full bar, gaming area and enclosed outdoor patio seating.

• Redlands, California

Interstate 10 runs through the middle of Redlands, with many motorists perhaps not giving the Los Angeles suburb a second thought. But those who spend time in the town will experience a “gorgeous” and "picture perfect" small town where shops, bars and restaurants are full and the student population from the University of Redlands helps create a lively buzz, Boylan says. The nearby San Bernardino Mountains and various lakes offer plenty of spots for outdoor recreation. Those interested in history can learn about anything from the Civil War to mastodons at one of the city's five museums or drive the tree-lined streets to see ornate historic buildings from the turn of the last century, when Redlands was known as “The City of Millionaires.”

• Santa Barbara, California

For many students, attending college in a beach town is an easy sell. Santa Barbara, home to the University of California, Santa Barbara , offers a palm-lined beachfront location on the Pacific Ocean. UC Santa Barbara even has an on-campus beach where students can surf, swim, walk their dogs, enjoy the tide pools or climb the stairs up to the bluffs for spectacular views. They can also take a stress-relieving hike up to Inspiration Point or relax with oceanside meditation at UC Santa Barbara’s Lagoon Island Labyrinth. For more adventure, the school offers scuba diving courses as well as skiing and snowboarding clubs. Santa Barbara, with a population of nearly 88,000, and similarly sized cities "have similar attributes to the large cities but on a smaller and more intimate scale – wonderful food scene, local music hangouts and more," Salvadore says.

• Spokane, Washington

The Spokane River cuts through the middle of the city near three college campuses: Gonzaga University , Spokane Community College and Whitworth University . Nearly 230,000 people live in Spokane, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, making it one of the larger college towns on the West Coast. The downtown area has a variety of restaurants and bars, and Spokane Arena often hosts major sporting events and concerts. "One of the things I loved most about Spokane was that it has a really great mix of nature and city," Gonzaga alumnus Cade Hajovsky wrote in an email. "It's easy to access the river, lakes (only a short drive from Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho) and hikes, while also still having a great restaurant and entertainment scene."

When could you see the northern lights? Aurora forecast for over a dozen states this weekend

A series of strong solar flares that the sun has been emitting since Wednesday morning could cause the northern lights to become visible this weekend to a wide swath of the United States.

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) hurtling toward Earth prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to issue a rare  Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch on Thursday for the first time in 19 years. The geomagnetic storms that the CMEs would produce pose a limited threat to our communications, but they can also trigger the aurora borealis, better known as the northern lights.

And because the sun is at the height of its 11-year-cycle, the auroras have a very good chance of being seen by more Americans than usual .

Here's what to know about the northern lights, and when and where you may catch a glimpse of them this weekend.

Good news on northern lights: Experts predict years of awesome aurora viewing

What are the northern lights?

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph, according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

When might the northern lights be most visible?

This week's solar activity brings with it the increased possibility of seeing the aurora across the U.S.

Though the timing is uncertain and the northern lights can be a particularly fickle forecast , officials at NOAA said the coronal mass ejections could reach Earth as early as Friday evening into Saturday, Shawn Dahl, a space weather forecaster at SWPC, told reporters Friday morning during a news briefing.

Experts from NOAA said auroras could be visible into Sunday.

The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases, according to NOAA.

Where might the northern lights be best seen in the US?

The northern half of the U.S. is forecasted to be in the view path where the auroras may be most visible.

The best chances appear to be in northern Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the majority of North Dakota, according to SWPC's  experimental Aurora viewline . The visibility for viewing will also depend on local weather conditions and city lights.

Experts at NOAA said the northern lights may even be visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California. If all else fails, experts even recommend taking a photo of the night sky with your cell phone – you never known what you may capture.

"Things that the human eye can't see, your phone can, so it'll be interesting to see just how far south we're getting aurora images this time," said Brent Gordon, Chief of Space Weather Services Branch for SWPC, on the Friday call with reporters.

The National Weather Service on Friday shared an aurora forecast for Friday night and early Saturday morning, showing more than a dozen states with at least a chance to see the lights.

How does the solar maximum influence the northern lights?

Explosive bursts of radiation known as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (eruptions of solar material) drive the geometric storms, releasing solar particles and electromagnetic radiation toward our planet.

As the frequency of coronal mass ejections increases at the height of its 11-year cycle,  which NASA said is expected to be in 2025 , electromagnetic activity on the sun peaks. What that so-called "solar maximum" means for us is that the risk increases for disruption to satellite signals, radio communications, internet and electrical power grids.

Last December , a powerful burst of energy created the largest solar flare that NASA had detected since 2017.

The last G4 level solar storm hit Earth in March , one of only three storms of that severity observed since 2019, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center .

Just like in March, the upcoming solar storm will have particles flowing from the sun that get caught up in Earth's magnetic field, causing colorful auroras to form as they interact with molecules of atmospheric gases. The resulting glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora may be quite a sight to see.

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a college, from program offerings and location to acceptance rate and tuition.

Prospective students can filter schools by a variety of factors: four- or two-year, private or public, general areas of study, specific majors, tuition cost, student body size, test score requirements, median starting salary after graduation, and more. You can also browse by state, which is a fun way to find out which institutions lead the pack wherever you live (or are hoping to go to school). Niche has a very in-depth process for determining these rankings, which involves weighted grades given in nine categories: academics, value, professors, campus, diversity, student life, student surveys on overall experience, local area, and safety. The quality of professors is weighted quite a bit more heavily than, say, the quality of the dining hall, but it’s nice that campus food is considered worth evaluating at all. Niche factors in about half a million student surveys, too, so the breakdown isn’t just a clinical reflection of statistics.

The best colleges overall are of course also the best colleges in their respective states. For Connecticut, that’s first-place finisher Yale University; runner-up Stanford University holds the top spot for California; and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in third place, edged out Harvard University (fourth place overall) on the Massachusetts list. Yes, Ivy League schools perform well in Niche’s breakdown. But if you want to filter for only public schools, again, that’s easy to do.
