Overcoming First Ride Jitters

It’s natural to have a few nervous jitters if you’re a first time helicopter rider.  The facts about your first helicopter ride in Pensacola Florida will help calm your nerves and allow you to have a great ride!

Choose the Best Helicopter

Dress appropriately.

When it comes to choosing the right apparel for a helicopter ride, safety should be your first priority.  It is important to feel great for that pre-flight photo, but you’ll want to be comfortable and safe during the flight.  Leave accessories like hats and scarves in your car since they can be blown away.  If you have long hair, pull it back and put it up.  Most importantly, wear flat, closed-toed shoes.

Seating Arrangements

Everyone will want the best seat on their helicopter ride, or they want to sit beside their favorite significant other.  However, the helicopter pilot will want to load the helicopter so that it is balanced correctly.  When you get on board, you will be shown where to site for the best weight balance of the aircraft.  If you aren’t able to sit next to your spouse or most-scared child, don’t worry! Everyone will still be able to communicate and will have an amazing, memory-making trip.

Shark Tours

Pilots know where the hot spots are to spot sharks near Pensacola Beach.  You’re likely to see other amazing marine life as well, including sea turtles, dolphins and manta rays.

Shipwreck Tours

Pensacola has been a long shipping history.  Additionally, Pensacola has also has a naval history dating back to the first European settlers.  Over all of these years, some ships were lost at sea.  A popular flyover is the shipwreck of the U.S.S. Massachusetts .  Helicopter pilots know right where to take you to view them from a birds-eye view.

Historic Tours

A number of tours are available that tour Pensacola’s world-famous historical sites.  Whether you’re interested in viewing the historic Fort McRee, Fort Barrancas, or Fort Pickens, you’ll learn more about military history from the air than you could ever imagine.  Popular attractions during this fly-over include Pensacola Pass, Pensacola Lighthouse and even the Naval Aviation Museum located at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Beach Tours

There are several popular beach tours offered locally, from the Alabama Coastline to Destin.  The sugar-white sands of the Emerald Coast, combined with the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico make these tours very popular.  You’ll never look at the beach the same after experiencing the unheralded beauty of our beaches from a birds-eye view.

Popular city tours include the Historic Palafox Street and the Blue Wahoo’s Baseball Stadium in Historic Pensacola, Florida.  Heading west, you can view the picturesque coastal town of Seaside, where The Truman Show was filmed.  Or you can opt in to view Destin’s Harbor Town from the air.

Fireworks Tour

Take in the Destin Fireworks from a birds eye view!  This is a real show-stopper, and is genuinely hard to put into words.  During the summer, fireworks are launched Thursday evenings over Destin Harbour.

Helicopter Safety

Helicopter accidents aren’t frequent but do occur.  In the last 10 years , there have been 1.44 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours of non-military helicopters.  You should choose a company with a good safety rating.  Below are 10 easy questions you should ask your helicopter tour company before booking a flight with them.

Ten Questions you should ask before flying on touring helicopter

  •  Are you certified with the FAA Part 135 Air Carrier ?  This holds them to very high standards.  If the website does not explicitly state they’re certified, call them and ask.  You can also contact the Federal Aviation Administration to verify certification.
  • Have you had any safety violations or accidents?
  • Are you a TOPS (Tour Operators Program of Safety) member?
  • What is the name of the pilot that will be flying me and how experienced are they?  A pilots experience is measured in hours of flight.  Ideally, your helicopter pilot should have a few thousand hours of flight time.
  • What training and certifications does the pilot have?
  • Does the helicopter have flotation equipment and will I be provided with a personal flotation device?  Since you’ll be flying over water, don’t neglect this necessity.
  • Are the passenger’s restraints just like the pilot’s restraints?  Don’t accept sub par restraints.  Restraints should be a one-point quick release system.
  • Are the helicopters equipped with an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELTS)?
  • How old are your helicopters?
  • Do you give a full, pre-flight safety lecture to all passengers?

You can also research tour providers on the National Transportation Safety Board accident database .  Remember it’s your responsibility to keep you and your loved ones safe.  Spend a few minutes on the phone verifying they can answer the 10 basic questions above.  Once you arrive for your flight, verify all the equipment is present on the helicopter.  If they don’t take safety seriously, walk away.

Helicopter safety and weather

Bad weather may include isolated storms, heavy rain, hair, thunderstorms, fog, cloud cover and high winds.  Extreme heat is typically not a concern.  If the weather is unsafe the pilot will not fly.  Typically, you will not be charged or charged a cancellation fee.  If for any reason you don’t feel safe flying, don’t fly.  Even if the company and pilot clear the flight, you are ultimately responsible for your safety.  In that scenario, be prepared to pay a cancellation fee.  Be sure to contact your provider to find out the cancellation and refund policies.

It caught my attention when you said that the pilot will not fly if the weather is unsafe. As you said, don’t fly if for any reason you don’t feel safe flying. My husband and I actually own a helicopter which we want to use to visit his parents next week. I remembered that he mentioned that it has not been serviced for years now. For our safety, I will make sure that a pro will do maintenance services to it. Also, we will do your tip to observe weather conditions.

What to expect at a Blue Angels air show?

If you’re never been to a Blue Angels air show, you’re in for a treat. Plan for an all-day event, from waiting in line as you await the opening gates at 8:30 a.m. to when the show wraps up about eight hours later.

Once the gates open, depending on which show you’re attending, you’ll likely be able to meander through vendors, claim spots to watch the show, enjoy performances from civilian and other military teams and learn about some aeronautical history.

Each show has a fairly strict schedule it follows, which can be found online. Taking a peek, you’ll see that there’s something to keep your attention every 30 minutes to an hour, starting with a parachute demonstrations and ending with a demonstration from Fat Albert just before the Blue Angels take to the skies.

How long do the Blue Angels fly?

A Blue Angels air show is typically an all-day event spanning about eight hours. Civilian acts and other military performers take to the skies throughout the day leading up to the final event: the Blue Angels. Fat Albert will lead the Blues with a short 10-15-minute demonstration, and the Blues will perform for about an hour afterward.

What planes do the Blue Angels fly?

In 2021, the Blue Angels started flying in a new airplane for the first time in more than 30 years — the  Super Hornet F/A-18 E/F . The new jets are 25% larger, fly 40% further, remain on station 80% longer and can carry more weapons than their predecessors. The team previously flew F/A-18 Hornets, which they transitioned to from the A-4F Skyhawk II in 1986.

How fast do the Blue Angels fly?

The new Super Hornets can reach top speeds just under Mach 2 (about 1,400 miles per hour), almost twice the speed of sound. The jets can climb at a maximum rate of 30,000 feet per minute.

Blue Angels pilot salary

Blue Angels pilot salaries are no different from what their pay would typically be, based on rank and time in service.

Where are the Blue Angels based?

The Blue Angels are based onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola in Pensacola, Florida.

Where do the Blue Angels Practice?

The Blue Angels Practice at NAS Pensacola on specific days of the week. They are stationed at NAS Pensacola from mid-March until early January every year.

In January they move to El Centro Naval Air Facility in California.

What time do the Blue Angles Practice?

NAS Pensacola Flight Demonstration Practice are scheduled between 10:30 - 11:30 am

Best Places to Watch the Blue Angels Practice

There are a few places to watch the Blue Angels Practice and have a great view of them flying overhead.

One thing to know is for practice sessions the Blue Angels have a FAA Airspace reservation for each flight demonstration session that covers 5 nautical miles from NAS Pensacola. This is 5.75 land miles from the flight line of NAS Pensacola.

Some of the best places to view the Blue Angels Practice include the National Naval Air Museum, Fort Pickens, Pensacola Lighthouse , boat tours on Pensacola Bay, and various points in downtown Pensacola and surrounding area.

National Naval Air Museum

You can view the Blue Angels Practice flight demonstrations from the museum flight line north of the museum on designated practice days.

You cannot bring backpacks or bags onto the flight line so make sure to plan accordingly. Visitors can carry diaper or medical bags.

Visitors can bring their own lawn or bag chairs or rent a folding chair for $6. There is also first come first serve metal bleachers.

To view the practice civilians must enter through the West Gate Only onto Naval Air Station Pensacola.

The gates are open for public access from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. There is no place to form a line, so don't arrive early, or you will be turned around.

All vehicle occupants 18 and over must have a state-issued photo ID with them.

Accessibility - There are accessible parking spaces near the museum AND closer to the viewing area. Look for the large white helicopter in the parking lot and drive towards it. There is a designated accessible parking space much closer than parking at the museum. Once you walk through the gate they have golf carts that will drive you closer to the viewing area.

There are accessible designated seats on the lower level of the bleachers to the right of the viewing area. You can also bring chairs or rent them onsite if you want to sit close the flight line.

Plus Size Seating - We suggest bringing a camp chair or chair you are comfortable sitting in. They rent folding chairs but I don't know what their weight limit is. They are plastic seats and I always worry about how comfortable they will be. There is also open bleacher seating on metal bleachers.

Parking - Parking is available at the National Naval Air Museum. It is about a 200 yard walk to the entrance of the airfield from the front of the museum.

Cost - $0.00, It is FREE to watch the Blue Angels practice at the Naval Air museum

Concessions - The Naval Aviation Museum Foundation has a gift store and food/water concessions available on the flight line.

Credit/Debit card only for payment.

Water, Gatorade, Chips, Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, ICEES (Cherry & Blue Raspberry), Crystal Lite packets, and earplugs are for sale at the concession area.

Keep an eye out for the special t-shirts that are only sold during practice sessions. There are great Blue Angels gifts available including a super cute kids flight suit perfect for family photos.

Proceeds from concession sales support the museum and foundation programs.

Chair Rental - There are folding chairs available to rent for $6. There are a limited quantity of chairs so we suggest arriving early if you plan to get a chair. You will need to carry it from the chair service area to the flight line.

Credit and Debit card only for payment.

After the show they have you leave the chairs in place and they take care of cleaning them up.

Address - 1750 Radford Blvd, Pensacola, FL

GPS Address for the West Gate is 1878 S Blue Angel Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32507

What to bring with you - Bags are not allowed onto the flight line so we suggest making sure you have LOTS of sunscreen on before you walk out to watch practice.

Don't forget the back of your neck and shoulders like I did during our 1st practice! The hot pink shoulder look isn't the souvenir you want to bring home with you.

Hats, sunglasses, ear protection , and your best camera are always a good idea. We brought our professional camera and cell phones and had so much fun taking photos.

During the Blue Angels practice flight demonstrations they may do maneuvers from any of there three shows.

They have specific shows based on weather, cloud clearance, and visibility they may encounter during the air show season.

High show - 10,000 foot ceiling, 3 nautical mile visibility

Low show - 4500 foot ceiling, 3 nautical mile visibility

Flat Show/C-130 - 1,000 foot ceiling, 3 nautical mile visibility

There is an announcer at the outside viewing area who will guide you through what is happening during practice.

At times they will play the pilots talking through maneuvers. The precision that these pilots are able to accomplish is amazing.

Practice may start a few minutes early with Fat Albert the Blue Angels C-130 taking off. We highly suggest arriving early and being comfortable before Fat Albert takes off.

Fat Albert's take off is unbelievable. It's hard to imagine a plane of this size executing a low transition takeoff.

Fat Albert may do a few maneuvers depending on the practice including a Remote Entry, Parade Pass, Flat Pass, Head on Pass, Remote Head on Pass, and Assault Landing.

At the front of each section you should see a volunteer holding flags. Keep an eye on where they are pointing to know which direction the Blue Angels will be flying in from.

One thing to know is they may have a sneak pass so always keep your ears and eyes open for the jets. They truly come from all directions and it is amazing.

A lot of the maneuvers are conducted at the center point of the spectator area.

We found that you can get a great view from most locations on the flight line. If you are sitting in the bleachers the higher rows have a view over most of the people sitting in chairs which is helpful if you want to see the runway.

The lower bleacher seats are still fantastic if that is all that is available when you arrive.

Fort Pickens

Practices can be viewed from Fort Pickens in Gulf Islands National Seashore. We suggest finding an open space so you can see the sky easily.

We have seen people climb to the top of the fort where it is open to see a clear view.

Accessibility - It really depends on where you choose to watch the practices. Some of the areas have boardwalks and paved walkways making it easier to view from an open area.

Plus Size Seating - We suggest bringing a camp chair that you are comfortable sitting in.

Parking - Go early! Parking can fill up quickly and they will close areas once the parking is full.

Cost - $15-25 for a park entrance pass. You can also use a National Park Pass for entrance.

Address - 1400 Fort Pickens Rd, Pensacola Beach, Fl

You can take a boat tour to view the Blue Angels practice from the water. There are both private and group trips available.

Cost - Varies depending on the tour

Lil' Toot Boat Tours offers a Blue Angels Cruise out of Pensacola Beach, Florida

Tickets go quickly so make sure to check often!

Target near NAS Pensacola

If you visit Target please park in the large Target lot and not in front of ALDI. We like to shop at Target and Aldi to thank them for the parking space.

We have also heard that the Walmart parking lot across the street offers a great view for spectators.

Where can you not see the Blue Angels Practice?

One thing to know is you cannot see the Blue Angels practice from Perdido Key, Orange Beach, Pensacola Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Fort Morgan, or Navarre Beach.

They have a designated air space for practice that does not extend to these cities. You may be able to see them randomly doing a Beach Buzz during a return flight back from an airshow in these locations.

What is a Beach Buzz?

Beach Buzz's happen when the Blue Angels are returning from an airshow. There is a chance the Blue Angels will fly past Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido Key, and down towards Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach.
