It's not quite a sigh of relief, but Blair Bursey is very pleased to have the PGA Tour Canada back.

Bursey, from Gander, N.L., is one of 37 Canadians in the field at this week's Royal Beach Victoria Open, the first PGA Tour Canada event since 2019. Then known as the Mackenzie Tour, the third-tier men's professional golf circuit had two take two seasons off due to travel restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think people are overall pretty grateful to have things maybe settling back to the way they were before," said Bursey, who won the Victoria Open last year at Uplands Golf Club in B.C.'s capital. "Obviously, everybody's gone through the last couple of years differently and coped with it differently and had different experiences.

"But I think that overall, it's nice to see something that was in place before kind of get back closer to where it was."

The Mackenzie Tour had to cancel its 2020 season because of the pandemic but still held the Canada Life Series in August and September of that year to give Canadian-based golfers some playing opportunities. As travel restrictions continued into 2021, the Forme Tour — based in the United States — was created for non-Canadian PGA Tour Canada members to compete in.

  • PGA Tour Canada introduces new sponsor, season-long points format

The Fortinet Cup will mirror the competitive structure of the points-based competitions on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Fortinet has sponsored a new $100,000 player bonus pool, with $25,000 to the winner of season-long points competition.

"The people that run PGA Tour Canada did a an amazing job of getting events in place over the course of the last two years," said Bursey. "To have it be elevated back to the stature it was previously I think is really cool.

  • Dustin Johnson spurns RBC Canadian Open commitment for Saudi-funded tournament

The Fortinet Cup winner will earn membership on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour, with the No. 1-ranked player at the end of the season eligible to play in every open Korn Ferry Tour tournament the following season. An exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open is also at stake for the Fortinet Cup winner.

Nos. 2-50 in the Fortinet Cup standings will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership.

Bursey, who turned professional in 2018, said he learned a lot after winning last year's Victoria Open, and hopes to capitalize on that experience.

"You don't need to be perfect to have a good chance to win," said Bursey, who won with a 10-under par 270 last year. "So obviously good memories here and it was nice to play well here last year.

"But I expect it to be a very different winning score, a very different field this week as the level of competition is raised significantly."

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., will make her return at this week's U.S. Women's Open, the second major of 2022. The No. 11 women's player in the world missed the cut at the L.A. Open on April 21 and the Palos Verdes Championship on April 28 before taking a break from play. She'll be joined by Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., and amateur Lauren Kim of Surrey, B.C., at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., heads into the Memorial Tournament this week ranked 37th in the FedExCup standings. He'll be joined by Mackenzie Hughes (40) of Dundas, Ont., Adam Hadwin (58) of Abbotsford, B.C., and Adam Svensson (125) of Surrey, B.C., at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio,

Korn Ferry Tour

Toronto's Albin Choi and Vancouver's Stuart Macdonald are the only Canadians in the field at the REX Hospital Open this week at The CC at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C. Choi is 93rd in the second-tier tour's standings and Macdonald is 111th.

Champions Tour

Calgary's Stephen Ames finished second on Sunday at the Senior PGA Championship, moving him up to fourth in the Charles Schwab Cup money list. He's back in action on Friday at the Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa. David Morland IV of North Bay, Ont., is also in the field.

LatinoAmerica Tour

Myles Creighton of Digby, N.S., tied for third at last week's Jalisco Open, sending him up to 28th in the TotalPlay Cup rankings. He'll be back in the field at this week's Volvo Golf Championship at Club El Rincon de Cajica. Noah Steele (68) of Kingston, Ont., Henry Lee (104) of Coquitlam, B.C., and Ziggy Nathu (T139) of Richmond, B.C., are also playing at the event in Bogota, Colombia.

Northern Bear Golf Club to host 2024 ATB Classic

Second stop on PGA TOUR Americas to take place June 24-30 in Strathcona County, AB

PGA TOUR Americas, Linx Marketing and ATB Financial confirmed today that the ATB Classic will be played at Northern Bear Golf Club as scheduled, June 24-30, while the club continues to rebuild after a fire destroyed the clubhouse on January 13.

“The incredible strength of the club and the community is what makes it possible for the ATB Classic to be played at Northern Bear this summer,” said Scott Pritchard, Vice President of PGA TOUR Americas. “Our players love Northern Bear and we’re looking forward to supporting the club as the healing and rebuilding process continues.”

“ATB Financial has proudly supported professional golf in Alberta for more than 25 years, and is excited for this highly competitive and rewarding event to return to the Northern Bear Golf Club,” said Curtis Stange, CEO of ATB Financial. “We are confident that the business community will rally around this tournament and that hundreds of volunteers, caddies and billets will help make it possible!”

“Northern Bear is excited to host the ATB Classic once again and we look forward to having the players and everyone involved back here in June” says Blair McDowell, Director of Golf.

“Hosting an International Professional Golf Tournament without a clubhouse will have its challenges”, said ATB Classic Tournament Director Darcy Enick.  “We are working closely with the Northern Bear staff and local sponsors and suppliers to ensure the ATB Classic will continue to be one of the top ranked events on PGA TOUR Americas”.

The Jack Nicklaus design proved to be a formidable test for PGA TOUR Americas players in 2023.   Notre Dame Graduate Davis Lamb won the tournament at -18 and went on to win the Quebec Open, and finished 3 rd on the 2023 Fortinet Cup Standings.

Lamb silences field with 3-stroke victory at ATB Classic

pga tour canada field

SHERWOOD PARK, Alberta—Davis Lamb had to Monday qualify just to get into the field for this week’s ATB Classic. He had no idea that he was about to make history.

Lamb, of Bethesda, Maryland, shot a 2-under 70 Sunday to finish at 18-under 270 at Northern Bear Golf Course and become the first Monday qualifier to win on PGA TOUR Canada.  After his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned win, Lamb is now exempt for the remainder of the season.

“It’s kind of surreal to be standing here right now,” Lamb said. “My game was in a good spot. I was ready to come up here and compete. But to start Monday morning, teeing off with kind of a play-well-or-go-home scenario, and to make it all the way to Sunday and be standing here
 It’s pretty surreal.”

The Notre Dame graduate overcame two double bogeys on the front nine during a cool, windy day to beat Eric McCardle of Oak Harbor, Washington—another Monday qualifier—by two shots and Nicolo Galletti of Berkeley, California, by three.

“Today is about the hardest I’ve ever had to work on the golf course, so for it to pay off the way it did, it feels amazing,” Lamb said.

Lamb also moved into a tie for second place on the Fortinet Cup points list, 42 points behind leader Étienne Papineau.

Lamb shared the 54-hole lead with Eric Lilleboe after players completed the delayed third round Sunday morning. Dangerous weather conditions forced suspension of play Saturday and the fourth round’s weather didn’t really improve.

Lamb stumbled with his first double bogey of the day, on the par-5 sixth hole, and took another double on the par-4 ninth hole. But he somehow regained his momentum with an eagle at No. 10, a 540-yard par-5, and added three more birdies, the last coming on the par-3 17th that gave him a three-shot lead entering the 72nd hole.

“I doubled my sixth hole, hitting the ball in the trees, which you just can’t do out here, and then doubled No. 9 again,” Lamb said. “At that point I’m just hanging on for dear life. Luckily, I hit a good drive on 10, and I just told my caddie, ‘It’s time to hit a golf shot right now.’ And we did from 235 (yards) to about three feet, made eagle and from there we just played great coming in.”

Lamb said it was “easily the best golf shot I’ve hit in my entire life and to do it in that situation was amazing.”

The long birdie putt on the 17th hole certainly made it an easier finish for Lamb, who punctuated his win with an emphatic fist pump when the final putt dropped.

“It’s never done. I was still working hard,” Lamb said. “But to take a three-shot lead going into 18 was, in my mind, a can’t-lose scenario. I knew I was driving. I knew I could hit the green. So, to give myself a chance to win with a five-putt, it’s comfortable for me.”

McCardle had three birdies on the back nine but never got closer than a stroke. He shot 69 and finished at 15-under 273. Galletti also found himself in contention late in the round, recording his fifth birdie on No. 15, but a bogey on the 17th hole would see him finish with a 4-under 68 and in third.

Sudarshan Yellamaraju was the low Canadian. He shot 66, the best round of the day, and finished fourth, at 13-under 275. He moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard the final day.

“I’m happy with the way I played today, especially under these conditions. I wouldn’t say anything clicked. I just feel like I did my job,” Yellamaraju said.

There was a four-way tie for fifth place, at 12-under 276—Canadian Noah Steele, Sam Choi of Malibu, California, Chase Sienkiewicz of Sacramento, California, and Australian Jack Trent.

What is PGA Tour Canada? [How to Qualify for PGA Tour Canada]

The Canada Golf Tour

PGA Tour Canada is a series of tournaments hosted in Canada each summer, with one stop in the U.S., where golf stars begin the path to the PGA Tour. Formerly known as the Mackenzie Tour, the PGA Tour Canada remains one of the developmental tours where players can improve or hone their skills in preparation for PGA Q-School and/or the Korn Ferry Tour – with the primary goal of playing on the PGA Tour itself.

Although the tour is hosted and managed in Canada, foreign players from New Zealand, Australia, and the USA are known to be part of it. Owing to that, the PGA Canada tour has become a well-known golf tournament across the world.

If you are looking for the finest competition that the sport has to offer, the PGA Canada tour is a top option to consider. Any aspiring golfer can join the PGA Canada tour, as long as he or she has the skills to play golf at a professional level.

Each year, numerous golfers from around the world get involved in qualifying events of the tour, to win their way into big events and leagues in golf. The Canadian Tour is accredited with sending many players on to PGA Tour success. Canadian Mike Weir, the winner of eight PGA Tour titles – including the 2003 Masters – earned Rookie of the Year honors on the Canadian Tour in 1993.

PGA Tour Canada has its own series of qualifying schools at numerous sites across the country. The medalist at each of the six sites is fully exempt for the season. Also, those in the top 14 (not including ties) are exempt through the first six events, when a reshuffle happens. In case of a tie, note that a playoff is used to determine the final exempt position. Individuals in the top 40 including ties are conditionally exempt.

PGA Tour Canada Qualifying Tournament Procedures and Information

The primary mission of PGA Tour Canada is to deliver a PGA Tour experience for its members, fans, volunteers, and partners, and to ensure that they develop the future stars of professional golf and enrich the communities the Tour visits. Aside from the details and information noted above, here are other key details when looking to qualify for PGA Tour Canada;

Membership Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in PGA Tour Canada, professionals or amateurs will need a handicap index, which when applied to a qualifying course rating, will generate a course handicap of two (2.0) or less. The PGA TOUR reserves the right to validate the handicap index of amateurs and to refuse anyone not in alignment with the requirements.

In accordance with the PGA TOUR Canada Tournament Regulations, a player will need to be 18 years of age or older to qualify for membership.

A player under the age of 18 may be allowed to enter the PGA TOUR Canada Qualifying Tournament, as long as the player turns 18 on or before the first scheduled round of the final (official money) PGA TOUR Canada tournament of the season.

If a player under the age of 18 qualifies for the PGA TOUR Canada, the player would not be eligible for PGA TOUR Canada membership until his 18 th birthday.

The entry fee of $2,600 USD will have to be paid when sending in your application and be payable by credit card. Use of a Visa Debit card is not advisable. The entry fee includes a green fee, coupled with liability insurance coverage, covering liability that may occur as a result of the applicant’s presence at a qualifying competition site.

Only online entries are accepted and the entry fee for any player attempting to enter after the entry deadline will be $3,000 USD. Applications may be submitted for the one-week period as stipulated by the entry availability and deadlines noted by PGA Tour Canada.

Completed applications will be randomly selected until all tournament sites are filled. Note that any applicant whose applications are not selected pursuant to this process will not be eligible to compete in the 2022 PGA TOUR Canada Qualifying Tournament, and their entry fees will be refunded.

Have it in mind that PGA Tour Canada as of 2022 is a 72-hole stroke play competition with the low 30 qualifiers and any player tied for 30 th place earning eligibility status. The winner of each site will be exempt for the entire 2022 season and not subject to any reshuffle(s).

Also, note that Finishers 2-9 will be exempt through the reshuffle which will take place approximately halfway through the season. In case of a tie for 1 st or 9 th position, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff immediately following play. Finishers 10-30 and any player tied for 30 th place will get conditional status to the PGA TOUR Canada for the 2022 season.

Field Size & Site Assignment

According to reports, a maximum of 132 players are allowed per site. All 2021 members of the FORME Tour, coupled with all 2021-2022 PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Members will get priority in site assignment but will be drawn on a random basis from virtually the same pool of member applicants.

Member and non-member entries won’t be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and both are subject to the same entry period.

The PGA TOUR Canada still has the right to balance the field size at qualifying sites by assigning any applicant, including members of the aforementioned tours whose applications are received before the entry deadline, to other sites as considered necessary.

Should each of the sites/fields reach the maximum number of players, extra applicants will be assigned as an alternate to their highest-ranked (i.e., first) site preference. Just as with site assignments, alternates will be assigned on a random basis and PGA TOUR Canada still has the right to balance the field size at qualifying sites by assigning any alternate to another site as considered necessary, irrespective of preference.

For players; while on the host facility property, players are expected to present a neat appearance in both clothing and personal grooming. Blue jeans, cutoffs, T-shirts, or shirts with no collar shall not be worn. Shorts are permitted only during the official practice round and the days prior; players will be mandated to wear long pants on official competition days (this also includes when using practice facilities on-site).

For caddies; while on the host facility property, caddies will need to wear either long pants or tailored solid-colored knee-length shorts or skirts. Blue jeans, cutoffs, T-shirts, or shirts with no collar shall not be worn. Smooth rubber sole shoes are required. Sandals, open-toe shoes, and golf shoes with traditional metal or soft spikes are prohibited.

While on host facility property during qualifying rounds, players and caddies are expected to carry themselves professionally. Have it in mind that PGA TOUR reserves the right to remove a player from the qualifying competition for non-competitiveness, conduct unbecoming of a professional by the player, or conduct unbecoming a professional by the player’s caddie.

Tips on How to Qualify for PGA Tour Canada

Any aspiring golfer can join the PGA Canada tour, as long as he or she has the skills to play golf at a professional level. If you are looking to become a professional golfer in Canada, consider these tips noted below.

Work with a Professional

Note that to become a professional golfer in Canada and participate in PGA Tour Canada, it is imperative you first hire the services of a professional golfer. A professional will teach you the right techniques used by professionals when playing the sport. Aside from that, he will make necessary changes to your swing to ensure it is better and more lethal.

Practice, Practice, Practice

To ensure that you become very perfect with your golf swing, you must practice it regularly. Professional golfers tend to invest so much time in hitting balls out of the bunkers and on the range. Don’t forget that regular practice would only make you a better golfer.

Always Remember To Warm Up

It is also important you create a warm-up routine you will use when you are playing in PGA Tour Canada tournaments. When you are playing in such tournaments, it is necessary to ensure that your warm-up routine can help you remain focused both physically and mentally.

Participate in Tournaments

Also, consider participating in some regional and local golf tournaments before going on to register for PGA Tour Canada. This will ensure that you get used to the pressure of tournament play. Regardless of how good you are at golf, you have to get used to the pressure of playing in a golf tournament. Don’t forget that pressure influences the way you play your game. When you feel pressured, you barely make the most out of your birdie opportunities.

Submit Your Application Early

Also, remember to fill out and turn in your application on time. Once you have submitted your application, make sure to pay all the required fees. After that, focus on landing among the top places in the qualifying rounds. By becoming a top 25 golfer after the very tasking qualifying rounds, you will get the opportunity to play on the PGA Tour Canada.

The PGA Canada golf Tour is a professional golf tournament that features the best upcoming golfers in the world. Have it in mind that the leading five-point earners at the end of each season get status on the Korn Ferry Tour for the following season. The primary mission of PGA Tour Canada is to deliver a PGA TOUR experience to its members, fans, volunteers, and partners.

Reimagined circuit, integrating PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, will award 10 exempt Korn Ferry Tour cards

Change Text Size

PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Canada have merged to create PGA TOUR Americas, a singular, competitive pathway tour set to feed into the Korn Ferry Tour.

With play starting in March 2024, the inaugural PGA TOUR Americas schedule includes 16 events spanning across Latin America, Canada and the United States. Two continents and eight different countries will host players competing for the chance to earn their way onto the Korn Ferry Tour and ultimately onto the PGA TOUR.

Combining PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Canada for 2024 allows for two competitive "swings" throughout the year, with six events in Latin America spanning from March to May, followed by 10 North American events spanning from June to September.

Each tournament, aside from the season-ending Fortinet Cup Championship, will be a four-day, 72-hole stroke play competition featuring a 36-hole cut after two rounds (to the top 60 players and ties). Play will be conducted per the traditional calendar scheme of Thursday-Sunday.

The top 120 players on the PGA TOUR Americas Points List after 15 events will be eligible for the Fortinet Cup Championship, which features elevated points. The top-10 players on the final 2024 Fortinet Cup Standings will earn exempt Korn Ferry Tour membership for the 2025 season.

In addition to 10 exempt Korn Ferry Tour cards via the season-long points race, up to five conditional Korn Ferry Tour cards are available to the top two finishers in the Latin America Swing and the top three finishers in the North America Swing, if these players do not finish in the top 10 on the final PGA TOUR Americas Points List.

The top two players from the Latin America Swing can upgrade to exempt Korn Ferry Tour status for the 2025 season with a top-10 finish in the final Fortinet Cup Standings.

pga tour canada field

Eligibility

Eligible competitors include all professionals and amateurs whose qualified course rating handicap index is two (2.0) or less. Players must be 18 years or older to obtain PGA TOUR Americas membership. Players below the age of 18 may qualify for a PGA TOUR Americas tournament; however, they will only become eligible for membership upon their 18th birthday.

The Latin America Swing will feature 144-player fields, incorporating the results from the 2023 season across both international tours. Eligible players include the top 60 from both the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Totalplay Cup points list and the PGA TOUR Canada Fortinet Cup points list, in addition to medalists from First Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, additional finishers from Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, the top three finishers from the Latinoamérica Developmental (Dev) Series and the highest finisher on the APGA season-long points list. Open qualifiers, sponsor exemptions, current Korn Ferry Tour members and the 2023 PGA TOUR University class will round out the field.

Upon the close of the Latin America swing, the field will increase to 156 for the North America Swing. The top 60 finishers from the first swing will earn membership, in addition to the 2024 PGA TOUR University graduating members (finishers 6-25), the NCAA DII Player of the Year and finishers one through nine from the six PGA TOUR Americas Q-School sites conducted across the month-long stretch between swings. Full eligibility for the North America Swing features similar categories to the Latin America Swing, including open qualifiers, sponsor exemptions and eligible Korn Ferry Tour members.

Points list

The official points list used to conduct rankings throughout the season is a system used diligently in past seasons by PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, PGA TOUR Canada, Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA TOUR. The formula is designed for success specifically towards those who evince consistent play of high finishes and made cuts.

Each PGA TOUR Americas tournament winner will receive 500 points for the victory. A solo runner-up finish will generate 300 points. If there is a tie in any position (barring a tie for first, which is remedied by a playoff), the points will be evenly distributed amongst the players in that position. (E.g., in a five-way tie for second place, the points allocation for finishers 2-6 will be added together and divided by five, with each second-place finisher receiving an equal points distribution.)

Points for the limited-field Fortinet Cup Championship will be higher, with 600 points awarded to the winner.

Additional benefits

Each PGA TOUR Americas event offers a $225,000 (USD) purse, with the winner earning $40,500 (USD). For a majority of events, this marks an approximate $50,000 increase over 2022 purses.

Players who earn Korn Ferry Tour cards (up to 15) through the PGA TOUR Americas season will be guaranteed a spot in the Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, post-PGA TOUR Americas season, for a chance to earn PGA TOUR membership.

Not only do top performers garner these benefits, but also all PGA TOUR Americas members will gain access to Q-School in some capacity. Finishers 11-25 on the season-long points list, finishers 3-10 from the Latin America swing and finishers 4-10 from the North America Swing will earn direct access to Second Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School.

All remaining members will be exempt into First Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School, bypassing the pre-qualifying stage.

Up-to-date news and information can also be found on PGA TOUR Americas social channels:

  • Twitter: @PGATOURAmericas (English) or @PGATAmericasESP (Spanish)
  • Facebook: @PGATOURAmericas

Why are the two PGA TOUR international tours combining?

o PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Canada have always presented another opportunity for players to gain access to the Korn Ferry Tour through high-level performance. The PGA TOUR recently decided to combine these Tours in an effort to create a more consistent, cohesive and effective pathway for skilled players who were looking for a way to showcase their abilities and, in return, earn a spot on the next level.

What kind of status is earned via the 15 Korn Ferry Tour cards?

o The top-10 finishers from the season-long points list receive “exempt” Korn Ferry Tour membership. The top-two finishers from the Latin America swing receive “conditional” Korn Ferry Tour membership. The top-three finishers from the North America swing receive “conditional” Korn Ferry Tour membership.

What is the difference between exempt and conditional?

o Exempt status earns a player access into any open tournament on the Tour’s schedule. Certain players have guaranteed starts for the entire season and can choose their schedule as they see fit.

o Conditional players will be placed in a category that allows limited access to events after their allotted number of guaranteed starts. Members who have surpassed their allotted number of guaranteed starts move into a conditional eligibility category based on their position on the season-long standings.

How are points evenly distributed in a tie?

o Given the finishes of the tied players, the points that are compiled of those positions will be added together and divided among the number of players in said position. (Example: If six players tie for sixth in an event, the total points for solo finishes 6-11 are added together and divided by six, with each player receiving equal points distribution.)

How does PGA TOUR Americas Q-School work?

o Upon the conclusion of the Latin America swing and prior to the start of North American events, there will be a “mid-season” Americas Q-School series that will offer PGA TOUR Americas membership. Six sites, spread across the United States and Canada, will offer exempt status for the North America swing to finishers one through nine from each location with finishers 10-25 (and ties) earning conditional status.
