PGA Tour 2K23: Three Fantasy Courses to Check Out Based on Other Games

PGA Tour 2K23 features several iconic golf courses including Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and Pinehurst. They’ve been continuing to add more courses as they go along. However, although we’re seeing these courses, there’s one longtime feature that remains in the game that’s been around since The Golf Club first released back in 2014, and that feature would be the course designer.

This mode has allowed golf fans to really let their creative juices flow and put together some masterful golf courses. Some look realistic while others are fantasy gems. There have also been many talented designers who have created real world courses such as Royal County Down, Merion, and Turnberry among others.

You’re able to get as creative as you want in the designer. So much so that we’ve even seen courses based around other video games, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today. There aren’t a ton of these necessarily, but there are a few great ones to check out. The first one ironically has the word “Last” in its title. We’ll kick things off with a course based on one of the most iconic PlayStation franchises.

The Last Of Us Part II (Seattle)

The story of Joel and Ellie’s apocalyptic adventures captivated gamers when The Last of Us dropped back in 2013. Since that time, the game has become one of the all-time greats and has spawned a sequel and a TV show. The Last of Us Part II would release seven years later to critical acclaim as an older, more experienced Ellie goes on a mission in abandoned Seattle, which is where this custom golf course in PGA Tour 2K23 takes place.

Designed by bbusbri08 , this incredible course beautifully captures the eeriness of the abandoned city as shown in The Last of Us Part II . You’ll be hitting over water, around broken-down structures, and there’s even a par-3 where you can actually hit into an abandoned building from an elevated tee box (easily one of the best holes on the course).

Although I’ve played these games since 2014, it’s honestly never not amazing to see what kind of courses the players are making, and this is one of those that is quite an achievement. You’re almost expecting a clicker to pop out from somewhere as you hit shots — it’s just that cool.

Nintendo Golf Club

So this course isn’t based off of just one game but an entire collection of games. Nintendo Golf Club, designed by Nevtendo is a fun golf course that features some of the best fairway, bunker, and green designs you’ll see. It’s actually a pretty straightforward course for the most part, but these designs really make it pop out. From Mario to Legend of Zelda to Super Smash Bros, this course in some ways feels like an all-star team of Nintendo games and characters, but in golf course form. Heck, Nevtendo even has what appears to be Bowser’s lair.

But you’ll definitely be spending a lot of time zooming out to the fairways and greens to see what design you’ll be tackling next. The course already starts off with a bang with a Mario-themed layout before showing other Nintendo-inspired layouts. As mentioned, it is a fairly straightforward course. There aren’t any real elevation changes and such but there are a couple of surprises along the way.

So if you feel concerned that the course may be too hard then don’t worry, it’s a fitting course for all kinds of players. There is one hole that might feel a tad tricky at first as you try to aim for both an island target that both has a small patch of fairway and the green — so just keep that in mind as you play. But overall, Nintendo Golf Club is a fun art gallery of one of the world’s most iconic brands.

Hogwarts Legacy

As the name implies, this course, designed by DeathRace__ is inspired by the incredibly popular Hogwarts Legacy game that released earlier this year. There are actually a couple of other great Hogwarts courses too, and honestly, you can choose any of them but I just chose this one because it’s named after the video game, which is our focus. But a couple of the other terrific courses are both simply called Hogwarts with one being designed by bbusbri08 and the other one being designed by LONEWOLF LW8865 .

Another course of note is the beautiful Hogwarts House Cup, which is designed by MojoMiester . But going back to Hogwarts Legacy, this course features some of the popular aspects of Harry Potter that the other courses have, but with a few differences. The opening hole in particular sees you teeing up in the town for a fun start. There’s also one hole that’s made just for putting so there’s a neat little change of pace.

There’s also a Quidditch-based hole too, which is a big part of the other courses as well. One small difference here is that there are actually floating brooms (or in this case, floating bunker rakes). And once again, although this is the one Hogwarts course we highlighted, definitely make sure to check out some of the others. You really can’t go wrong with any of the ones we mentioned.

In PGA Tour 2K23 , players can tee off on 20 officially licensed golf courses from around the world and custom courses created by the community. Players will also have access to other modes, such as Topgolf and new DLC content, as four additional courses have already been announced but have yet to receive an official release date. In the meantime, players seeking more gameplay variety can access hundreds of custom courses created and uploaded by other 2K players.

Thanks to the game's course designer feature, PGA Tour 2K23 players can channel their inner creativity to design any number of unique golf courses. Once these custom customs have been uploaded, they can be downloaded and used by any other player. Additionally, players will have access to all custom courses that have been uploaded, as well as several filters to find the most popular course creations.

PGA Tour 2K23 players can access the game's custom courses from the main menu by navigating to the 'casual' section. A number of recommended custom courses will be displayed on this screen. In addition, players can access several filters to explore the extensive catalog of custom courses. Players can use the 'Suggested' and 'Trending' filters to find the most popular courses or enable the 'More Filters' option to search for a specific course. Each course is rated on a 5-star system, and each creation can be saved to the 'Favorites' tab to ensure quick and easy access in future gameplay sessions.

Playing Custom Courses in PGA Tour 2K23

Once players have found a suitable custom course by using these filters, they can access the community creations immediately. Players can load straight into a single-player session by simply selecting any custom course on this menu. Players can decide on the course format, as well as the number of holes that are to be played. These courses are often extremely challenging and rarely resemble the 20 official PGA Tour 2K23 courses . Putting islands, yachts and helipads are just some unique course design features players can expect to encounter from course to course, as there are few parameters placed on players seeking to create the wildest course in the game.

While the custom courses in PGA Tour 2K23 are easily discoverable and accessible to players, their usage in the game is currently limited. Unlike the game's 20 official courses, players can only access these custom courses in local play from the 'Casual' menu page. Players will also be unable to master these courses in the game's career mode, as community creations are currently excluded from the game's flagship mode.

The PGA Tour 2K23 course designer has already proven to be a popular feature in this year's installment, with players designing and uploading hundreds of custom courses since the game's release earlier this month. These creations have provided players with an entertaining way to diversify their virtual golfing experience beyond the 20 official PGA Tour courses. While the use of these courses is currently limited, future patches and updates may allow PGA Tour 2K23 players to master them with some of their favorite golfing superstars in other game modes.

PGA Tour 2K23: Course Designer

The course designer in PGA Tour 2K21 had 288,00 courses designed by the community, and it looks like the mode will be just as popular in PGA Tour 2K23. If you did make a course in the previous iteration of the game, then don’t worry you can bring them along with you.

They won’t be published straight away though, you will have the chance to go in and make some changes and well needed updates with the new content in the game. Fortunately for players this mode is more user friendly now, according to the developers, this way it should entice new players into the course designer. 

This means making sure there are less things on a screen at a time and other quality of life improvements, as well as a detailed tutorial to ease players in. 

One of the biggest additions to PGA Tour 2K23’s Course Designer , is the focus on new flora. There has been a large focus on foliage, trees and nature in general for the new game, whilst there is scope for more content to potentially release in the future.

THE RENAISSANCE CLUB

The Renaissance Golf Club takes pride of place on the Scottish coastline, with panoramic views across the Firth of Forth. 

As you navigate your way through the links, you are blessed with some of the most challenging holes that Scotland has to offer. Originally carved out of pine forest, the vast majority of these trees have been cleared to uncover the sandy dunes below. A few strategically placed trees remain on the fairways to enhance the definition and aesthetic quality of the course.

However, don’t be fooled by the beauty; this is a course that is set to challenge even the best golfers in the game. With multiple holes that require long carries off the tee, The Renaissance Club will favour the big hitters, and unless you are dead straight, be prepared to suffer the penal long grass. 

This is not a traditional old school, links setup; undulating fairways and elevated greens mean that ground play is not always possible. Therefore your only other option is to flight the ball in, and take on the brutal winds of the Scottish coast.

Featured Hole: No. 9 (218 yards, par 3)

The 9th hole at The Renaissance Club is a relatively new addition to the course. Situated on a stretch of coastline that incorporates holes eight to 12, this is regarded by many as the ‘crowning jewel’ of the club. 

But, just because it is pretty, does not make it easy. This is a stern test for any golfer, regardless of ability. The longest par 3 on the course, it usually plays into a gusty headwind that whips in off the North Sea. 

Even if you manage to land the ball on the green from your tee shot, you face a precariously sloped green that will test the putter from almost any distance.

Originally known as The Golf Club, the PGA Tour 2K series is the pinnacle of virtual golf. It features some of the most well-known professional golfers and the most beautiful courses on the tour.

PGA Tour 2K23 delivers a Course Designer for you to create your own, but nothing quite beats sinking a putt on iconic real-life courses. There are nearly two dozen in the game that will make you feel like Tiger Woods, driving the ball down the fairway with hopes of winning championships.

10 TPC Southwind

Designed by Ron Prichard and located in Shelby County, Tennessee, TPC Southwind is the only private golf club in the state that's part of the PGA Tour. It has a total of ten water hazards and 94 bunkers, making it one of the most challenging courses in the entire tour.

The course demands perfect club selection to navigate its numerous bodies of water along with its dogleg holes. You will need to be as accurate as can be to land the first shot before the holes angle off and drastically change.

9 East Lake Golf Club

East Lake Golf Club is where the PGA Tour Championship occurs. It has been replicated in great detail in PGA Tour 2K23. East Lake was established in 1904 on the site of an old amusement park, with a layout that makes it one of the easier PGA Tour courses.

The standout hole that can give you some trouble is the 15th at East Lake. It's over 200 yards from the tee to the green, up a hill, with a lake in between. Missing the trajectory or not getting enough distance will dump the ball right in the water, taking your score down with it.

8 The Renaissance Club

The Renaissance Club is a new course in PGA Tour 2K23, but has an old-school feel to it. Residing in Scotland, the Renaissance Club is a wide-open links course with beautiful scenery. This includes a glistening ocean that runs along its outer perimeter.

There's nothing particularly challenging about this course, and it doesn't come with any special gimmicks. It is simply a modern golf course with a touch of the past that is incredible to lay your eyes upon.

7 TPC Louisiana

TPC Louisiana is known as one of the South's best golf courses. It has been a focal point of the PGA Tour since it opened in 2004. It has a treacherous amount of water hazards and bunkers, but is combined with natural flourishing fairways.

This course is home to one of the most popular features in the PGA Tour 2K series. An alligator is often seen emerging from one of the lakes, but don't worry — it won't swallow the golf ball or come after your in-game golfer. It is there to represent the location and the difficulty of the course.

6 TPC Deere Run

Silvis, Illinois is where TPC Deere Run has hosted the John Deere Classic since 1971. Trees, trees, and more trees line the holes of this course. It is known as one of the trickiest PGA Tour courses because of its natural landscape and the twists and turns incorporated by architect D.A. Welbring.

The Rock River runs along the property and is most prominently seen near the 16th hole. The green on this hole overlooks the river, providing an amazing view. It often distracts golfers from the tough journey down the fairway, filled with bunkers and smooth hills that send balls rolling backwards.

5 Riviera Country Club

The Riviera Country Club golf course is in Pacific Palisades, California, just outside of Los Angeles. It consistently ranks as one of the top 50 golf courses in the world, and has proven to be a challenging 18-hole course for the best golfers on the PGA Tour.

The course is packed with tough par four and par five holes that become even more difficult when the wind picks up. Another challenge is the Kiyuku grass planted on the course. It refuses to let balls bounce along it, making accuracy towards the green a vital skill.

4 Quail Hollow Club

The Quail Hollow Club golf course was designed by George Cobb in 1961 to give Charlotte, North Carolina one of the finest courses in existence. Quail Hollow delivers a mix of quick holes and surprisingly frustrating fairways.

Many of its holes are straight and narrow, requiring accurate shots to stay on the path to the green. Chipping the golf ball slightly will send it right into the thick grass of the rough. You'll find it almost impossible to get any distance on your shot from there. This is the course that separates casual golfers from the elite.

3 TPC Twin Cities

Designed by none other than Arnold Palmer, TPC Twin Cities is a champion's golf course. The Blaine, Minnesota destination has 27 natural bodies of water throughout a course that was shaped around the landscape rather than taking it over.

The best golfers know how to hook a shot that keeps them from the hazards. Novices might find it extremely intimidating, however. Thankfully, there are tee boxes for all skill levels here. Regardless, it is one of the most breathtaking courses in PGA Tour 2K23.

2 TPC Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass is an iconic PGA Tour course. Located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, it opened in 1980 as the first TPC-labelled course. The PGA Tour headquarters is located here, and it hosts signature events all year round.

PGA Tour 2K23 has done a splendid job of recreating the course's 17th hole, known as the Island Green. The green is surrounded by water, with a short 137-yard shot to it from the tee. It's the only place to land the ball, so weather conditions and club selection are hugely important to avoid the water.

1 TPC Scottsdale

TPC Scottsdale is a golf course in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is home to the Waste Management Phoenix Open and often draws 700,000 fans each year. In PGA Tour 2K23, the mass of spectators is showcased on the sides of its obstacle-filled holes.

The wildest aspect of TPC Scottsdale is its enclosed, Coliseum-like 16th hole. A lovely mountain range sits in the background of a small hole surrounded by stadium seating. Thousands of eyes will be on you as you tee off, with one of the better chances of notching a hole-in-one in all professional golf.

2K today revealed the officially licensed courses available to play in PGA Tour 2K23. 

In addition to 17 courses returning from PGA Tour 2K21, three new courses - the South Course of Wilmington Country Club, The Renaissance Club, and St. George’s Golf and Country Club – round out a full list of 20 courses available at launch to keep "players swinging with swag and challenging their crews on a total of 360 unique fairways and dance floors."

In order to create pristine in-game renditions of real-life courses, 2K and HB Studios use a combination of aerial drone footage, lidar data, high resolution photography, and supporting assets provided by each course’s management to ensure each course is true to life and features realistic buildings, signage, hazards, fairways, greens and climate. The process ensures the most authentic PGA Tour video game experience available to date. Courses such as Riviera Country Club, home of the Genesis Open, which was recently named by PGA Tour as an elevated tournament for the next season, truly shine, down to the smallest detail.

PGA Tour 2K23 Deluxe Edition and PGA Tour 2K23 Tiger Woods Edition are currently scheduled for release on 11 October, followed by PGA TOUR 2K23 Standard Edition on 14 October, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation®5 (PS5™), PlayStation®4 (PS4™) and Steam.
