College Student for a Day (or Two)

  • January 26, 2021 April 15, 2024

Explore PCC and College Days logo header

A level of eagerness and excitement often precedes a much-anticipated trip. There’s a suitcase packed, a destination picked, and a college choice ready to be considered! Well, that last one may sound pretty specific, but when the destination is Pensacola Christian College for College Days or Explore PCC, you bet it’s on the list!

When visiting PCC’s campus, prospective students and their families see and experience how the College is dedicated to excellence in the academic , social, and spiritual aspects of its students’ lives. High school students become college students for a day during  Explore PCC , an event that caters to a smaller number of guests for a personalized campus visit. They learn how to navigate campus like pros during  College Days , a multi-day venture that offers an in-depth experience. Both events feature a variety of activities for those interested in learning more about the College.

Holly Collier

As an admissions counselor who primarily advises high school applicants, Holly Collier has often suggested that families drop by the northwest corner of Florida to see the campus facilities themselves if possible. “Attending a College Days or Explore PCC event gives prospective students the ability to make an informed decision about applying to PCC and learn more about campus—with other prospective students!” said Holly. “We also welcome parents who can travel to campus with their student. And, if our current applicants visit, we are even more excited for them to connect with their admissions counselor!”

During the visit, guests can meet with academic representatives to discuss programs of study, learn the campus layout and lingo such as “ DHA ” and “ VPA ” on a guided campus tour, see first-hand what the student experience is like by visiting classrooms, and participate in informational sessions designed to answer college’s more difficult questions. Families can also be encouraged at chapel during a pause in the busy class day, or try their hand at air hockey, bowling, or the rock wall in the Sports Center during activity times. A recent additional experience during these events, Taste of PCC, allows guests to taste the best food from the dining options on campus, including The Palms and Common Grounds Café . Of course, it’s likely that additional events will also be taking place during the visit, such as an Eagles game , Fine Arts , or any of the variety of concerts, senior recitals, and art shows.

Here’s what visiting families and their students have had to say about their experiences:

“All the staff were extremely helpful and kind,” a visiting parent said. “We sensed a sweet spirit of the college. The entire event was very well run. We are very glad we came to this event to see all the changes that have taken place.”

“I liked the tour, being able to ask lots of questions, seeing real college classes, going to Fine Arts , and hearing about the work scholarship ,” said a prospective student.

“I was very glad to see how strongly PCC implements living according to Scripture and strengthening our relationship with Christ in everything we do,” said a prospective student. “I will most definitely be attending.”

Rachel Moses

No matter which visit experience is chosen, PCC is glad to make understanding the ins and outs of college easier for anyone still considering where to earn their degree. “It’s tough to know whether or not you’d feel at home in a place until you’ve been there,” said Rachel Moses, student communications coordinator. “I’ve talked to many parents and students, especially those from farther away—California, Washington, Maine—who feel more at peace after they’ve visited. Being away from home is never easy, but seeing how safe, connected, and equipped they’ll be gives confidence in taking the next step.”

  • PCC Graduates Celebrated at 2024 Commencement Ceremony

A total of 154 graduates crossed the stage of the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, NC the evening of May 17 as Piedmont Community College (PCC) celebrated the class of 2024 during their commencement ceremony.

The auditorium was filled with proud family members, friends, faculty and staff as the graduates marched in wearing dark green academic regalia to celebrate this momentous occasion. As the commencement exercises began, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7316 Color Guard of Caswell County and American Legion Post 89 of Caswell County presented the nations colors.

Antonio Foster, PCC Board of Trustees Chair, offered a charge and words of encouragement to the graduates.

“Today, as you stand on the threshold of graduation, I commend each of you for your resilience, perseverance and dedication,” Foster said. “Your journey has been marked by countless hours of hard work, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to your goals. Now, as you prepare to step into the world beyond these walls, you carry with you not only your certificates, diplomas, or degrees but also the knowledge, skills and experiences that will empower you to make a difference in the communities you serve.”

Foster also acknowledged Gordon Powell, Chairman of the Person County Board of Commissioners, for being an advocate for education and community development throughout Person County. Under Powell’s leadership, the Person County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved to move forward with the purchase of the former Carolina Pride carwash building at their February 2024 meeting to house PCC programs. The building will become the Center for Health, Advanced Technology and Trades (CHATT). Foster presented Powell with a plaque to express PCC’s gratitude.

“Under Chairman Powell’s leadership, Person County has seen remarkable progress and growth, ensuring that opportunities for education and advancement are accessible to all,” Foster said. “His commitment to fostering collaboration between local government and educational institutions like ours has been instrumental in driving positive change.”

Phillip Allen, a member of PCC’s Board of Trustees, delivered the keynote address to the graduates. Allen has been instrumental in advocating for CHATT, not only for the success of PCC, but for the growth of Person County and surrounding communities. He addressed the graduates on the importance of “showing up” for themselves and other people or causes they care about.

“The future is yours so take care of it by taking care of yourself,” Allen said. “The way you start is the way you have always done things. You show up.”

“Graduations are the greatest of celebrations because diplomas are not given away, they must be earned,” Allen said. Each of you earned it and not only did you have to do the work, but you had to study and sacrifice and persist to complete the work and you had to complete the work in a successful manner.”

Before graduates were called to receive their degrees, diplomas or certificate, Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, PCC President, announced PCC’s 2024 Academic Excellence Award recipient, Maci Mize. This award is given to one student from each of the 58 community colleges from the North Carolina Community College System and recognizes outstanding academia.

Mize, who would later be announced as earning her Associate in Science degree, will also graduate from Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership (PECIL) later this month. Mize says that her experience at PCC has been one of full support and encouragement. With the education she received at PCC, she plans to continue to pursue her passion for wildlife conservation.

As the graduates moved their tassels from right to left, they were announced as alumni of PCC. Overall, 291 degrees, diplomas and certificates were awarded to the PCC class of 2024. To watch the entire commencement ceremony, visit www.piedmontcc.edu/commencement .

Fuller Theological Seminary to Hold 75th Commencement Ceremony

In-person graduation will be held at lake avenue church.

pcc campus tour

Fuller Theological Seminary will hold its 75th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at Lake Avenue Church, located at 393 N. Lake Ave. in Pasadena.

According to the seminary’s announcement, doctoral hooding ceremonies will be held in person on the Pasadena campus during the week before Commencement.

For those unable to attend in person, the Commencement ceremony will be livestreamed on the seminary’s website at fuller.edu/watch. The ceremony is expected to conclude around 12:30 p.m.

In addition to the main ceremony, various centers and schools within the seminary will host their own celebrations and hooding events. These include the William E. Pannell Center for Black Church Studies, the Asian American Center, Centro Latino, the Korean Studies Center, the Center for Missiological Research, the Center for Advanced Theological Studies, and the School of Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy.

Fuller Theological Seminary was founded in 1947 by radio evangelist Charles E. Fuller and pastor Harold John Ockenga to counteract separatism and anti-intellectualism in fundamentalism. The seminary launched that September with 39 students, holding classes at a Pasadena church. Its founding faculty included prominent evangelical scholars like Everett F. Harrison, Carl F.H. Henry, Harold Lindsell, and Wilbur M. Smith.

In 1965, Fuller opened the first seminary-based psychology program accredited by the American Psychological Association. The School of World Mission (now Intercultural Studies) also began that year.

Over the following decades, Fuller expanded with new degree programs, regional campuses, research centers, and clinical services across its three schools — Theology, Psychology, and World Mission.

In January 2023, David Emmanuel Goatley became Fuller’s 6th president, the first African American to hold that role. He succeeded Mark Labberton, who retired after a decade as president.

Over the past 10 years, the multidenominational seminary expanded academic offerings across its three schools of Theology, Psychology, and Intercultural Studies. It also launched new research centers. Campus facilities grew, including the 290,000-volume David Allan Hubbard Library opening in 2013 and new apartment-style student housing within walking distance. Fuller celebrated its 75-year legacy in 2022 with events like a commemorative campus tour highlighting its history in Pasadena.

With over 2,800 students from 90 countries, the seminary has played a key role in shaping modern evangelicalism by integrating faith and academic excellence.
