The Temples at Osian: Sachiyan Matta Hindu Goddess Temple

Sachiyan Matta Temple Originally built in the 8th century, the majority of the Sachiya Mata temple in Osian (Osian Matta Ji) that can be seen today dates to the 12th century A.D. Built on a hilltop, the temple receives crowds of pilgrims both Hindu and Jain during peak Hindu festivals season.

The main chamber (Grabhgrah) enshrines an idol of the presiding deity, Sachiya Matta along with images of other Hindu deities.

The carvings on the exterior of both the main temple and the peripheral shrines is simply stunning.

The Mahavira Jain Temple in Osian (Osiyan) is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara visited by both Jain and Hindu The sand stone built temple is an important pilgrimage of the Oswal Jain community who lives all over India. The walls and pillars of the temple display carved images of countless Gods and Goddesses, in addition to depictions of the different stages of the life of Lord Neminath (22nd Jain Tirthankara). A 32 inch high statue of Lord Mahavira in the padmasana posture is placed on a high platform made of cow milk and sandstone (by local legends). The temple is both on the other hand, is known for its spectacular and intricate marble Jain temple. The sight dates back to the 1400’s and its ornate carved pillars make it one of the world’s most impressive Jain temples.

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of Osian is that the mainstream traveler seems unaware of its existence, as it’s a town that’s rich in history.

It might be a small town today, but Osian was a stopping point along the silk route during the reign of the Gupta Dynasty. And in its heyday, Osian was also the capital of the Marwar kingdom. So now you know, this town is kind of a big deal!

Osian was once a Hindu-dominated city, but around the 9th century, the city started turning predominantly Jain. This is evidenced by the numerous temples and ruins dotted around Osian.

Being a small town, Osian doesn’t have an airport of its own, so you’ll have to fly to Jodhpur Airport, which is about 65 km away. You can then get a cab from the airport to Osian.

The best time would be the winters, of course. Late October to Early March is when desert experiences are the most enjoyable. Considering Osian is in the Thar Desert, summers can get unbearably hot. Although it does not rain too much, the monsoons do bring out breeds of insects in the desert. So avoid overnight stays during the monsoon as the experience would not be as satisfying.

Our Osian Desert safari tours

Tour 1: Osian Camel Safari

• Tour duration: 1 hours
• Tour timings: 5 pm to 7 pm
• Tour fare: Rs 499 per person

We will 1st pick you from Jodhpur city, from your hotel & later arrive at Osian sand dune point, to enjoy the evening camel safari tour & explore the desert area of Osian.

You can also visit the famous Osian Mata Temple and by night, we will come back to Jodhpur

Tour 2: Osian Jeep Safari

• Tour duration: 30-45 minutes
• Tour fare: Rs 999 per person

In our Jeep safari tour at Osian dunes, we will 1st pick you from your hotel in Jodhpur and arrive at the dune site.

Here you will enjoy a jeep safari tour at the dunes, see the stunning sunset & can also visit Osian Mata temple.

Tour 3: Osian Desert Safari with dance dinner program
