Blur (formed in 1989) is an English Brit-pop and alternative rock band who stormed to musical success in the ‘90s with their traditional English style and ideology, hailing from London, England, UK.

Prior to the formation of Blur, vocalist/keyboardist Damon Albarn performed in the group Circus alongside drummer Dave Rowntree, which later enlisted the help of guitarist Graham Coxon. Shortly after, whilst the members were studying at London’s Goldsmiths College, the name was changed to Seymour, and Alex James joined on bass to complete the line-up. After recording a number of demos and live performances in 1989, the band caught the attention of Andy Ross of Food Records who subsequently offered to sign the band provided they changed their name.

Blur was ultimately born and began touring in 1990 in support of the Cramps, later releasing the single “She’s So High”. The band’s sound was distinctly of the Madchester genre, drawing influences from the soaring psychedelic pop of The Stone Roses combined with the guitar drive of the Who. After releasing the No. eight charting single “There’s No Other Way” and the No. 24 single “Bang”, Blur released their debut album “Leisure” in 1991.

Following the release, the band embarked on a two-month tour of the States after which Albarn and the band aimed to move away from the sound and scene of their debut, which proved problematic. “Pop Music” was the band’s first single to step into the shoes of English pop however failed to find an audience in either the UK or the U.S. Blur’s sophomore album “Modern Life Is Rubbish”, produced by Stephen Street, was issued in 1992 to generally good reviews.

“Modern Life Is Rubbish”, whilst failing to achieve its intended success, paved the way for Blur’s breakthrough album “Parklife”. Released in 1994, “Parklife” shot to the top of the UK charts, aided by the lead single “Boys & Girls” and considerable BBC radio airplay. The album remained in the charts for a total of 90 weeks, earned rave reviews from the musical press, and has long been regarded as one of Britpops’ defining albums.

During this time Blur developed a musical rivalry with Manchester-based band Oasis, marked by both band’s releasing new singles on the same day. Blur’s “Country House” ultimately outsold Oasis’ “Roll With It”, however Blur’s subsequent album “The Great Escape” failed to compete with Oasis’ sophomore “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”. 1995’s “The Great Escape” once again earned positive reviews and topped the UK charts, however with the popularity of Oasis in the U.S., Blur were increasingly losing relevancy and public support.

After a year or so out of the spotlight, with influences taken from American indie-rock, Blur reincarnated themselves and released a self-titled album in 1997. Despite the UK No. 1 single “Beetlebum”, the album failed to reignite the popularity of its predecessors, however did find popularity in the U.S. With the significant success of the single “Song 2” in the States, hype for the band crossed the Atlantic and Blur enjoyed a resurgence of success in Britain. The album “13” followed in 1999 after which Albarn focussed on the hip-hop side-project Gorillaz with cartoonist Jamie Hewlett.

Graham Coxon departed the group ahead of the band’s seventh studio album “Think Tank”, which marked the end of Blur until a reunion tour in 2009. The documentary “No Distance Left to Run” was released in January 2010, followed by a new recording for Record Store Day entitled “Fool’s Day” also in 2010.

Live reviews

Blur, icons of the 90's Britpop revolution have enjoyed one of the most critically and commercially celebrated careers of any British artist. Their music has been the soundtrack to a generation and fans old and new continue to sell out their tours in mass force to see Damon Albarn and co perform the classic songs.

From the offset, the audience are excited and remain in a sense of hushed anticipation before the iconic group begin their show. The lights go down and deafening cheers ring out to the opening bars of 'Boys & Girls'. It is a risky move opening with one of your most prolific hits but Blur simply energise the crowd as they remain engaged with the show throughout. Albarn thanks them briefly between tracks but with seven albums to fit into a 20 song setlist, time is of the essence.

Luckily all the big hitters are included, a mass sing/clap along to 'Country House' nearly rips the roof off the Civic Hall before 'Parklife' causes mass jostling within the crowd. It is the anthemic introduction to 'Song 2' which receives perhaps the greatest reaction of the evening. Blur's music does not seem to age and the quartet proves why they are considered titans of Britpop.

Blur as a band is a British icon, which enjoyed most of their success in the 90s. Legends from the Britpop revolution, Blur are a wonder to watch live. Their music redefined a generation, and they continue to be one of the most successful British rock bands today. When Blur rocked on to stage to screams of ‘Woo Hoo’ by the excited crowd, it felt like an incredible moment and memento to British music history. Blur opened with ‘Song 2’, to the crowd’s absolute delight. They rocked the stage, strumming on guitars and bass and slamming on drums. Although Blur opened with arguably their most prolific and, best, hit, the rest of the show by no means felt like a let-down after such a fantastic opening. If anything, the show went from strength to strength as the band missed up their set list, interspersing slower songs with more up tempo tracks. ‘Coffee and TV’ and ‘Girls and Boys’ also had massive crowd reactions and were two highlights of the night. The crowd begged for an encore at the end and Blur obeyed, coming back to perform ‘Song 2’ one last time for the exultant crowd.

It was amazing! I loved every song they played, and I can´t stop being excited, yet. I think they really know how to make a show and how to make people feel the music they are playing, they know that for many people that went to see them, there are songs that have listend for so many years, and the fact that after so much time, they were listening Blur playing it alive, listening many people singing the lyrics at the same time, and they are there, living that moment, with the people that must be there with them, it´s something amazing that words simply cannot discribe. That´s the best part of every concert, and is something Blur really knew how to gave us.

Blur. Ah, the first thing that comes to mind is Beetlebum. Blur has a song for each mood you're in, however, be warned there is a bit of grungy, dive-bar listening type of feel.

I've had the great fortune of seeing Blur once, and it was beyond memorable. One moment you are jumping up and down, moshing, the next you and the entire crowd are singing along to Song 2. Some artists don't sound anything like their album music, but for Blur it's so point on and more! Let's just say I lost my voice for 2 days after the concert.

So grab your 90's clothes - necklace choker, ripped jeans, & simple tee and kick it with Blur - promise you won't regret!

Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon on stage at Wembley.

Blur review – glorious reunion buzzes with energy and ragged joy

Wembley Stadium, London The enduring friendship between Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree shines through in a set that veers from lairy capers to bittersweet ballads

H as anyone ever been more excited to headline Wembley Stadium than Damon Albarn? The Blur frontman anoints it “a temple for the agnostic”, pays tribute to Freddie Mercury at Live Aid, delights in the echo when he speaks, and turns breakneck instrumental Lot 105 into an ode to the place, coaching the crowd to chant “Wembley” in rhythm. “Obviously we’ve been waiting for this moment all our lives,” he says. That much is very clear.

Blur give good reunion. Their bridge-mending set at Glastonbury in 2009 was one of the most emotional nights in the festival’s history. Marking the closing of the London Olympics at Hyde Park in 2012, they felt rather like Britain’s national band. The thrill of headlining Wembley for two nights – a trophy that eluded them at their mid-90s peak – insures against diminishing returns. Albarn may be a famously restless musician, slaloming between Gorillaz, Africa Express and so on, but he is always visibly moved to be sharing a stage with Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, whose four-cornered friendship is crucial to their appeal. Fundamentally unchanged in their 50s, they still look like the only 90s band who could have been an animated TV show.

Phil Daniels comes out of a stripey road-workers’ tent at Wembley.

Albarn is a winning frontman, unvarnished and unjaded. Appearing in a baggy blue suit and Harry Palmer specs, he buzzes with a lairy, ragged energy. Just four songs in and he’s wading into the crowd to sing Tracy Jacks. “I didn’t think it would be like this,” he admits. Revelling in the jollity of Sitcom Blur, he dons a deerstalker for Country House and a Fila tracksuit for Girls & Boys, two songs whose crowd-moving, beer-flinging power is only exceeded by Parklife, with guest vocalist Phil Daniels emerging from a road worker’s tent like Kramer walking through Seinfeld’s door. The tent is a rare prop. Notwithstanding a pair of giant mirrorballs, there’s none of the standard stadium-rock hardware: no B stage or confetti cannons or hi-tech visuals. The songs carry the weight.

And what songs they are. The set’s roughly chronological opening stretch drives home the hungry velocity of Blur’s evolution, from indie-dance to punk petulance to Kinksian character studies to lo-fi squall, telling a very 90s story of ambition and ambivalence. Songs like Popscene and Beetlebum, which at the time felt as if they were thumbing their nose at success, sound Hulk-sized tonight. Most remarkably, the Coxon showcase Coffee & TV, an introvert’s lament veined with one of his signature keening anti-solos, mutates into an anthem. The fond dynamic between singer and guitarist makes for a delightful subplot if you notice the way Albarn pulls Coxon close for the line “I’m never sure why I need you” in Song 2’s gonzo sports-rock or waggles his tongue at him during fan favourite Tender. Albarn is having too much fun to keep a straight face during the lighter-wavers.

Despite the popularity of their handful of oi-oi capers, many of the essential Blur songs run on melancholy, doubt and an inchoate yearning for better days. The island ache of This Is a Low might have been designed to undercut Britpop triumphalism, scrutinising the English condition rather than celebrating it, while Tender, featuring the London Community Gospel Choir, assembles a hymn to perseverance from the shards of shattered love. Stranger, noisier inclusions like Oily Water and Trimm Trabb represent the art-rock prickliness that always rubbed against the grain of their pop aspirations. Two strong songs from their imminent album The Ballad of Darren (due for release on 21 July) suggest that the essential push-and-pull has not been lost.

Coinciding with Pulp’s own ecstatic reunion tour , Blur’s return reminds you how much more interesting the reality of Britpop was than the naff Cool Britannia caricature, what it meant for such sharp, characterful music to be so widely beloved, and how well it holds up three decades later. What makes this night so special is the clear impression that Albarn truly cherishes Blur – as people and as an experience. After The Universal’s bittersweet valedictory refrain of “It really, really, really could happen,” he takes in the roaring crowd with a dazed grin. “You’re properly mad, you lot, for sticking with us for so long,” he says. “Why?” Blur have just spent two glorious hours answering that question.

Blur play Wembley, London , on Sunday.

Following the announcement of Blur’s reunion, the band’s drummer  Dave Rowntree described the comeback as a “bucket list” dream .

Recommended

“We’re a band that’s done almost everything it’s possible to do… what an iconic place, what an iconic venue. It’s just incredibly exciting,” he said.

“[Wembley is] one of these iconic places that are secretly up on your bucket list, even though you pretend they’re not. I sincerely hope we are a band that can fill a stadium like that. I don’t want there to be four people and a dog.”

Bassist Alex James, meanwhile, has  teased on the possibility of new music from the band . Blur’s eighth and latest studio album,  ‘The Magic Whip’ , came out in 2015.

Other gigs may follow the four currently announced, with Colchester Council’s culture boss calling on Blur to stage a warm-up gig in the city ahead of their huge Wembley reunion shows.

As the  Daily Gazette  reports, frontman  Damon Albarn  grew up in Colchester and met guitarist  Graham Coxon  when they were both studying at The Stanway School (known then as Stanway Comprehensive).

50 Cent's Final Lap Tour Makes History, Becoming Only Third Rap Trek Ever to Cross $100M

Over two decades since 50 Cent strapped on his bullet-proof vest and dropped his iconic Get Rich or Die Tryin' debut, the G-Unit boss is still making history.

According to Billboard Boxscore, 50's The Final Lap Tour has eclipsed $100 million in earnings, making him only the second rapper to ever surpass that mark. The "In Da Club" rapper's 2023 global trek grossed $103.6 million, with 1.05 million tickets sold across 83 shows in North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia.

Prior to 50 joining the exclusive $100 million club, Drake was the only rapper to accomplish the feat, which he did with his last two treks (2023-2024's It's All A Blur Tour and 2018's Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour).

In his decorated touring career to date, 50 Cent has grossed $150.3 million and sold 2.5 million tickets, placing him at No. 8 on the list of highest-grossing rap acts in Billboard Boxscore history. The most lucrative stop on 50's Final Lap trek brought in a combined $4.4 million gross from a pair of dates (Nov. 11 and Nov. 23, 2023) at The O2 Arena in London.

There are a couple of rappers who could possibly be joining 50 and Drizzy in the $100 million club. Kendrick Lamar's Big Steppers Tour grossed $85.4 million, though that sum doesn't account for 16 shows in Europe and Australia that haven't been reported to Boxscore.

Jay-Z has been part of two $100 million-grossing tours, but he's excluded since both (On The Run I and II) were co-headlined by his wife Beyoncé .

Elsewhere, Travis Scott is set to score his $100 million membership card this summer when his Circus Maximus Tour heads to Europe for a slew of sold-out dates. Currently, he's on the doorstep with $95 million accounted for on the North American leg.

50 isn't the only rapper making touring history these days. Nicki Minaj ‘s reunion with the Barbz in "Gag City" on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour has been lucrative, grossing $67 million and selling 439,000 tickets. It's now the highest-grossing and best-selling rap tour by a woman in Boxscore history - and it's not even over yet.

To catch the bat, you must become the bat

two people with headlamps remove a bad from a mist net at night

It’s 8 p.m., and while most people have eaten dinner and are winding down, getting ready for bed, graduate students who study bats are just starting their workdays. During most of the summer, instead of resting, grabbing drinks or studying at night, the students and their technicians become nocturnal like the bats they’re hoping to catch in their mist nets.

Renee Lile, doctoral student in the Bernard Research Lab at the University of Wyoming, enjoys working with rare species, making conservation more inclusive and accessible, and helping land managers make informed decisions to conserve endangered bat species. She likes interacting with animals that people have to go out of their way to see.

Two people hold lights to a net in the dark

“Most people don’t see bats,” Lile said, “and when they do, it’s as a blur in the distance. They don’t get to see how cute they are.”

two gloved hands hold a bat with large ears a transmitter

Lile’s research supports efforts by many partners, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to conserve vulnerable, threatened, and endangered bat species, especially as a deadly disease, white-nose syndrome, spreads across North America’s bat populations. The Service coordinates the White-nose Syndrome Response Team that includes biologists, researchers, land managers, communicators and naturalists from federal and state agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations to conserve and strengthen healthy bat populations.

She studies maternity-habitat preferences of the endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), changes in population dynamics of western bat species when the deadly bat disease white-nose syndrome is present, and the role parasites play in bat fitness. The National Park Service funds her research in the Black Hills of South Dakota, within Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore National Monument and Jewel Cave National Monument.

As a doctoral student, Lile is encouraged to know her fieldwork and collected data will become useful tools when applied by land managers within the NPS. “I like knowing that my research will be used to update and create forest conservation management plans that will help protect bats in the West. Knowing that real people will use my data to better bats in the Black Hills makes the long nights of netting, exposure to poison ivy and mosquito bites all worth it!”

Lile is in the second year of her doctoral program. Although her academic and research journeys are just beginning, she appreciates her peers, parents and mentors. “My friends and lab mates are wonderful; they provide kind words and support. I can’t imagine working in a lab or research environment where people didn’t truly enjoy scientific collaboration. Basically, everyone I’ve met — my advisors, technicians, student peers — have been willing to extend me a helping hand on my graduate research journey.”

four people stand together for a photo in nature

A product of two naturalists, Lile is no stranger to the field of ecology. She’s grateful for the encouragement her parents provide. “The conservation biology field is different than a normal 9-5. It requires a lot of moving around and seasonal work, and my parents have shown amazing excitement and support for all my seasonal positions. They were also incredibly excited to hear I applied to graduate school to work with bats! They even came out to help net; it was great!”

two people in blue jumpsuits pose together on a trail

Lile is the first in her immediate family to pursue a graduate degree. She is advised by Riley Bernard, assistant professor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology and Ian Abernathy, Vertebrate Zoology program manager, at the University of Wyoming. Bernad has become her mentor, guiding her through the graduate school requirements.

“She has provided personal empathy and helped keep me positive and hopeful in the field,” said Lile. Lile, who proudly works on a team with several other women, is delighted to teach and mentor women her age and help the next generation of biologists frame their careers.

three people smile together with rolling green hills, blue skies, and bison in the background.

Outside of research, Lile enthusiastically encourages others to learn about bats and take steps to conserve them. “Bats are incredibly unique and provide many benefits,” she told me. “There’s always something that we can thank a bat for! They work overtime managing pests, dispersing native seeds, and pollinating plants like mangos, saguaro cacti and agave!”

a person in a mask and gloves holds a bat at night

Many millions of bats have died across North America due to WNS, caused by a fungal pathogen (Pseudogymnoascans destrucans), which can be transported on caving and rock-climbing gear. As a member of the rock-climbing community, she encourages climbers to decontaminate their gear, report bat roosts found while climbing, and share their love for bats.

“If you want to do something to help bats, and the environment in the Intermountain West, the best thing you can do is decontaminate your gear before and after a climbing trip, to prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome,” said Lile. "Together, we can slow the spread of this disease and mitigate bat exposure by deconning our gear. It only takes a few minutes!”

a person in an orange helmet uses ropes to belay near large rocks

When she’s completed her degree, Lile hopes to continue conducting bat-related research and conserving bats in the Intermountain West.

“I want to make sure bats in Colorado are safe and taken care of,” she said. Bats in North America are increasingly threatened by disease, habitat loss, and changing environmental conditions, they need our help more than ever. We can all help bats by learning about species in in our backyards and communities, respecting their habitat, and taking care to decontaminate our gear when entering caves and mines.
