Spend the afternoon freely exploring the city’s vibrant culture before meeting your group for the first time and enjoying a delicious welcome dinner together with your guide at 6pm.

Optional activities:

  • Punting on the Avon (from NZ$40 per person).
  • Akaroa day tour with scenic cruise and lunch (from NZ$250 per person).
  • Lord of the Rings high country tour with lunch (from NZ$299 per person).
  • Waipara wine trail (from NZ$160 per person).
  • Christchurch tram tour (from NZ$35 per person).

Following a delightful breakfast, you’ll head south, down the eastern coastline of the South Island, and cruise through the township of Oamaru, which is home to some of New Zealand’s most well-preserved heritage buildings.

Next up, travel onward to the magical Moeraki Boulders. Here, enjoy marvelling at the geological structures that began forming over 60 million years ago. These boulders now stand watch along the beach, guarding the foreshore in stony silence.

Later, pull into Dunedin with ample time to explore this unique town with rich Scottish heritage, or rest in the comfort of your accommodation if you prefer.

  • Speight’s Brewery tour (from NZ$30 per person).
  • Dunedin train station visit (surcharges apply).

Spend the morning strolling through the glorious gardens of Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s oldest castle, and admire the picturesque view.

Jumping back aboard your coach, you’ll travel onwards to Gore. Learn all about this quaint town and its colourful history of illicit whiskey distilling at the Hokonui Moonshine Museum. Hear stories about the Scottish settlers and their captivating tales of criminal pursuits and finish with a special tasting of Old Hokonui, made using the original recipe.

As evening falls drive on to Te Anau, known as the gateway to Fiordland and Doubtful Sound, for a group dinner and a pleasant night’s rest.

  • Glowworm caves evening tour (from NZ$119 per person).

After a delicious breakfast, set a course from Te Anau to Manapouri. Upon arrival, enjoy a leisurely cruise across the shimmering lake to West Arm, then take a short drive across Wilmot Pass, along New Zealand’s most expensive road. Make a brief stop to experience the lush Fiordland rainforest and bask in the sparkling views of majestic Doubtful Sound below.

As you board a modern catamaran at Deep Cove, prepare to experience the sheer grandeur of these mountain-girded waters. With only a handful of boats on the water at a time, Doubtful Sound offers a serene escape of total tranquillity. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some local wildlife, from penguins to seals and playful dolphins, as you enjoy relaxing in the sound.

At the end of the cruise, travel onwards to Queenstown, your home for the next two nights.

With no planned tour activity today, take your time to explore Queenstown at your leisure – it’s a true adventurer’s paradise. Loved for the vast array of thrilling activities up for grabs in and around the city, spend your day plotting all things adrenaline-pumping or take it easy discovering the incredible beauty of the city as you please.

The choice is yours, whether you jump aboard the iconic ShotoverJet or join a tour around the gold-mining region of Skippers Canyon. Chase the best views of the city with a gondola ride to the top of Bob’s Peak and perhaps enjoy a delicious lunch at the Skyline restaurant (surcharges apply). Kick things up a notch with a visit to the bungy jumping centre and watch other people completing their own jumps. Slow things down with a leisurely stroll around the lakeside, toasting with a refreshing drink and time to soak up the lush surrounds.

This afternoon, travel north towards the small town of Haast on the west coast, famed for its prime seafood delicacies, such as crayfish and whitebait. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed site is home to the Haast River, spectacular beaches and breathtaking lookouts.

Tonight, enjoy a delicious group dinner at your hotel.

After breakfast, start north along the coast of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park to the chilly charms of the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Stop at the Fox Glacier for a leisurely optional walk around Lake Matheson. Bask in the placid beauty of this dynamic glacial landscape, admiring the region’s lush rainforests and verdant mountains. Famed for its crystal-clear views of Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, Lake Matheson is a serene spot for a stroll.

Passengers stay at Distinction Hotel Luxmore.

Te Anau - Milford Sound - Te Anau

Traveling along the Milford Road (between Te Anau and Milford) is one of the finest alpine drives in the world. The scenery is exceptional, ranging from broad grassy flats, dense rainforest and towering mountains through to glacial lakes and alpine herb fields. A day tour to Milford Sound offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery to be viewed anywhere in the world. Board the coach and travel through stunning scenery along the Milford Road and into Fiordland, where your cruise boat awaits you. The tour includes a cruise around the fiord so you can experience its wonders up close and see landmarks like Mitre Peak and amazing wildlife, such as dolphins and seals. Cruise the inner most reaches of Milford Sound to the open Tasman Sea and back. There is the option to explore Doubtful Sound by cruise boat instead.

A one-day itinerary is enough to see all the beautiful views along the way, take a scenic cruise around the fiord, and get back to Te Anau in time for dinner.

Te Anau - Mandeville - Dunedin

Departing Te Anau for Dunedin, via Mandeville and the Croydon Aviation Museum and Waimea Plains Railway – where we “fire-up” the Rogers K92 Steam Locomotive (the original Kingston Flyer).

During this luxury coach journey, we take in the unmatched pristine beauty and rugged countryside that the Southland region is renowned for.

Passengers will stay at Scenic Hotel Southern Cross which is Dunedin’s most established hotel, nestled in the heart of the city.

In the morning, we explore the remote Taieri Gorge by Dunedin Rail over river gorges, weaving our way through a myriad of historic tunnels and guide you to the historic Wingatui Viaduct, a marvel of 1880s construction that remains the largest wrought iron structure in New Zealand.

Then, there is the option to discover Larnach Castle, which is situated on the picturesque Otago Peninsula - Larnach Castle is one of New Zealand’s premier visitor attractions. Lovingly restored by the Barker Family, the Castle and surrounding grounds are at the heart of the Dunedin visitor experience. Arrive in time for refreshing high tea in the Ballroom Café followed by a guided garden tour.

Dunedin - Oamaru - Aoraki Mt Cook

Departing from Dunedin by rail, we continue to hug the coast towards Oamaru. We then detour inland by luxury coach via Omarama and Pukaki towards the spectacular Aoraki Mt Cook. Here, we find the home of the tallest mountain in New Zealand, which helped Sir Edmund Hillary to develop his climbing skills in preparation for the conquest of Mt Everest. Recognised as part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Area, the National Park is a breath-taking environment of glaciers, terminal lakes, turbulent rivers and Australasia’s tallest peak, the mighty Aoraki Mt Cook soaring above at 3,724 metres. There is the option after dinner to enjoy star-gazing at the Planetarium, digitally immersed in what has been voted the world’s largest “International Dark Sky Reserve”.

Passengers will stay at the iconic Hermitage Hotel with majestic mountain views.

Aoraki Mt Cook

Enjoy a leisurely morning at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, which is a tribute to New Zealand’s global icon as well as discovering New Zealand’s colourful transport, climbing and hotel history.

Morning optional activities include a glacier ski plane tour or a scenic flight with expert pilots navigating their way over a glacial lake, passing soaring mountain tops over NZ’s longest glacier - the 600 metre thick, Tasman Glacier. Followed that afternoon, by a scenic drive through the National Park surrounded by the silent splendour of the Southern Alps. Dinner that evening is with a guest speaker from the Hillary family.

Aoraki/Mt Cook - Geraldine - Christchurch

A morning departure from the hotel leaving Aoraki Mt Cook by coach, we journey back to the coast via Tekapo and Fairlie on the way to Christchurch. On arrival in Christchurch, explore modern day Antarctica at the International Antarctic Centre and experience a taste of this unique and breath-taking continent – just like the explorers before you.

Passengers will stay at The Commodore Hotel in Christchurch.

Christchurch - Kaikoura

“Where the mountains meet the sea”

Departing Christchurch on the Coastal Pacific Scenic Train, our destination is Kaikoura, home of resident whales, where the guardians of the seas – the mountains of the Southern Alps – rise majestically from the deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean. Several different species of whale can be seen off the coast of Kaikoura at different times of the year, and most of the time, the huge resident Sperm Whales can be sighted. The ocean trench just off the coast means sperm whales are often seen close to shore.

Passengers will stay at the newly opened Sudima Hotel (or equivalent) taking in spectacular views of the Kaikoura Esplanade.

Kaikoura - Marlborough

This morning we introduce you to a true “rockstar of rail” and a grand finale of epic proportions, as the train is then hauled under a full head of steam by the glorious Marlborough Flyer. It is “all aboard” and we continue to take in the spectacular coastal journey as we depart Kaikoura. Onwards north via the Dashwood Pass and Awatere Valley to Marlborough, the famous wine region boasting over 100 vineyards.

This historic WW1 memorial steam locomotive Ab608 Passchendaele, named in honour of our fallen soldiers at The Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Having hauled royal trains on two previous royal visits in the early 1900’s, this is a journey fit for a king.

Passengers to stay at the Picton Yacht Club (or equivalent), which is the premier hotel in Picton located on the stunning waterfront.

Marlborough - Wellington

On the final day of the tour, one of the most picturesque ferry crossings in the world awaits. We weave our way through the Queen Charlotte Sound and cruise across the Cook Strait to the harbour city of Wellington. Tour ends in Wellington.

There is the option for post-tour accommodation at the James Cook Grand Chancellor.

New Zealand Train Travel: 2 Days Across the South Island

Exploring New Zealand’s South Island by Train: A 2-Day Scenic Journey

Imagine yourself winding through breathtaking landscapes, the Southern Alps towering on one side and the sparkling Pacific Ocean on the other. This is the reality of a train journey across New Zealand’s South Island, an experience that combines stunning scenery with the comfort and relaxation of a train ride.

TranzAlpine: A Journey Through the Heart of the South Island

The TranzAlpine is a world-renowned train journey that connects Christchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west coast. This 223-kilometer (138-mile) journey takes approximately 4.5 hours and is an unforgettable experience for any traveler.

As the train leaves Christchurch, it gradually ascends into the Southern Alps, offering panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains and the snow-capped peaks. You’ll pass through Arthur’s Pass National Park, a haven for hikers and nature lovers, and witness the dramatic beauty of the Waimakariri River as it carves its way through the mountains.

The train’s journey through Arthur’s Pass is a highlight of the trip. The tunnel through the mountain is a marvel of engineering, and the views from the observation car are simply breathtaking. The lush green valleys and cascading waterfalls are a testament to the region’s natural beauty.

Coastal Pacific: A Scenic Coastal Adventure

The Coastal Pacific is another remarkable train journey that connects Greymouth to Picton, on the northern tip of the South Island. This 253-kilometer (157-mile) journey takes approximately 5.5 hours and showcases the dramatic beauty of the West Coast and the Marlborough Sounds.

As the train departs Greymouth, it follows the rugged coastline, offering stunning views of the Tasman Sea. You’ll pass through the charming towns of Hokitika and Westport, known for their jade and driftwood, and witness the dramatic cliffs and inlets of the West Coast.

The journey continues through the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, a maze of waterways and islands. The train winds its way through the lush valleys, offering glimpses of vineyards, orchards, and native forests. The final destination, Picton, is a charming town with a bustling harbor and a gateway to the Queen Charlotte Sound.

Onboard Experience

Both the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific offer a comfortable and enjoyable onboard experience. The carriages are spacious and well-appointed, with large windows that provide excellent views of the scenery.

The café car serves a variety of snacks and beverages, and there is also an observation car with panoramic windows that allow you to soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The friendly staff is always on hand to answer questions and provide information about the journey.

Planning Your Journey

Planning your train journey across the South Island is easy. You can book tickets online or at any major train station. There are a variety of ticket options available, including day trips, overnight journeys, and multi-day packages.

It’s recommended to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season. You can also choose to travel in a first-class carriage, which offers additional amenities such as reclining seats and complimentary refreshments.

A train journey across New Zealand’s South Island is a truly unforgettable experience. It’s a chance to connect with the beauty of the natural world, enjoy the comfort of a train ride, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Whether you choose to travel on the TranzAlpine or the Coastal Pacific, you’re sure to be amazed by the stunning scenery and the unique onboard experience. So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

These Are The Three Most Scenic Train Journeys To Take In New Zealand

  • The Northern Explorer is the longest train ride in New Zealand, taking around 12 hours to journey from Auckland to Wellington. It showcases charming green hills and farmland landscapes.
  • The Coastal Pacific, running from Picton to Christchurch, offers stunning coastal landscapes and passes through Marlborough wine region. It takes approximately 6 hours to complete the journey.
  • The TranzAlpine is considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. It travels from Christchurch to Greymouth, featuring lush rainforests, snow-capped mountains, and picturesque landscapes. The journey takes 5 hours and passes through Arthur's Pass.

New Zealand is famous for its breathtaking natural scenery and one of the relaxing ways to explore the country is by train. In New Zealand, most of the old passenger train routes have been discontinued as cars and airplanes have taken over.

Still, in New Zealand, there are three excellent luxury and scenic train journeys to take: the Northern Explorer, the TranzAlpine, and the Coastal Pacific. Together they journey from the large northern city of Auckland to the small South Island West Coast town of Greymouth. These train journeys (and especially the TranzAlpine) can be counted among the most scenic train rides in the world. Here's what to know about the top-ranked train trips in New Zealand.

The Northern Explorer

Take the passenger train from auckland to wellington.

The Northern Explorer is the main passenger train service from Auckland (the largest city) to Wellington (the capital city) on the North Island. The Northern Explorer is by far the longest train ride, although it is arguably less dramatic than its South Island counterpart. Most of the route is characterized by charming rolling green hills and farmland.

The Northern Explorer traces the historic North Island Main Trunk railway completed over a hundred years ago. This heritage railroad took some 30 years to build, and it meant people didn't need to take several days of treacherous sailing around the North Island to get from city to city.

  • Terminuses: Auckland & Wellington
  • Length: 648 kilometers or 402 miles
  • Duration: Around 12 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD 239 (approx. $142 USD)

The Northern Explorer has been reimagined as a scenic train journey for tourists. The train journey is 648 kilometers (402 miles) and takes around 12 hours. Consider stopping off along the way and exploring the dramatic volcanic lands of the central North Island at Mount Ruapehu and the Tongariro National Park.

Along the way, visitors see some of the most stunning landscapes of the North Island including the Ruapehu, Tongariro, and Ngauruhoe — three of the most significant volcanoes in New Zealand. Gaze out at rolling green rural farmland, lush native bush, and much more.

Coastal Pacific

See the sea from picton to christchurch.

Journeying down to Wellington and taking the ferry across to the South Island, tourists can take the Coastal Pacific. The Coastal Pacific runs from the port town of Picton in the northern South Island to Christchurch — the main city of the South Island.

  • Terminuses: Picton (Ferry Connection With Wellington) & Christchurch
  • Duration: 6 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD $177 (approx. $106 USD)

Soon after leaving Picton, the Coastal Pacific runs through New Zealand's largest and most famous wine region - Marlborough (internationally acclaimed for its Sauvignon Blanc wine). While in New Zealand, explore some of the country's boutique wineries and sample its southern wines.

On the Coastal Pacific, visitors see some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes with mountains flowing into the sea. Stop over at Kaikoura and enjoy New Zealand's best place for whale watching (including sperm whales).

Kaikoura is also a hotspot for seeing dolphins and fur seals. Spot hundreds of New Zealand fur seals relaxing on the coast and some of the most rugged coastal landscapes in New Zealand.

A great yet lesser-explored spot in New Zealand is the coast's wild catlins , which are home to various wildlife and offer excellent views.

The Coastal Pacific takes around 6 hours and passes through 22 tunnels and over 175 bridges.

TranzAlpine

Take a scenic trip to "nowhere".

The TranzApline arguably offers the most dramatic scenery of any train ride in New Zealand and is counted among the great train journeys in the world. Whereas the Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific connect the three main cities in New Zealand, the TranzApline is something of a train to nowhere.

  • Terminuses: Christchurch & Greymouth
  • Length: 224 kilometers or 139 miles
  • Duration: 5 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD $239 (approx. $143 USD)

The TranzAlpine runs across the South Island from Christchurch through the Southern Alps to the West Coast town of Greymouth. The landscapes are characterized by lush rainforests, snow-capped mountains, lakes, braided rivers, and rich farmlands around Christchurch. The region around Arthur's Pass is famous and boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country.

The full 224-kilometer (139-mile) journey takes around 5 hours and it passes through 19 tunnels and over 4 viaducts. See how the South Island changes radically from the green coastal plains of the East Coast near Christchurch to the rugged mountainous interior to the lush rain forests of the West Coast.

The journey takes five hours, but visitors should stop off at Arthur's Pass deep in the Southern Alps along the way. Here, explore some of the South Island's most dramatic scenery.

Visitors can just take a day trip to Arthur's Pass from Christchurch or can stay there for a night or two before completing the train journey.

Besides these three epic train journeys, there are plenty of shorter scenic train rides to enjoy in New Zealand such as the Inlander from Dunedin that discovers the gold rush heritage of the region.
