50 New Chapter Quotes To Encourage Your New Journey in Life

Beautiful Flower Growing in the Morning Sunlight

Last Updated on March 3, 2024

Table of Contents

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

School isn’t the only place where you should be learning and growing . The world is filled with hidden gems, untold stories, and amazing sights. It’s normal to feel like you’ve hit a dead end or you’re stuck in a rut. Everyone feels this way at some point in life.

If you’re experiencing something similar, then maybe it’s time to begin a new chapter in life.

When do you need change in your life?

new journey one word

It’s easy to get accustomed to how you’ve always done things, especially if everything is going your way. You have a job that pays fairly well, relationships are exciting, you’re hosting game nights, and you volunteer for an animal shelter on the weekends. Life is good. Why change something that isn’t broken?

Change doesn’t – and shouldn’t – only happen during difficult moments. You don’t need to wait until you dread waking up in the morning to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing.

Think of life as a long ride through the interstate. On occasion, you will need to stop for gas, food, and sleep. But just because a hotel looks and feels homey doesn’t mean you’ll stay there forever. Remember: that’s just your pit stop – it’s NOT your destination.

Many of us are in pit stops in our lives. It feels sweet and comfy because there’s no friction. But ask yourself: is this really where you want to be, or is this merely a brief rest? Maybe you have dreams that now lay dormant at the back of your mind. Was there a goal that had to be set aside because of responsibilities?

Perhaps it’s time you got back on the road of life.

What to do when change feels scary

Determination Quotes

Human brains will prefer tried-and-tested routine over the unpredictable – that’s why change seems scary . However, the brain is also flexible and adaptable. Give it a challenge and once it overcomes the obstacles, it’s all a matter of getting into the habit so it comes as second nature.

Fear is often based on real and imagined events. For instance, you want to move on from a toxic job or relationship but have a hard time doing so. It could be due to:

  • negative self-talk;
  • angst about the future ( e. what do I do now, where do I go from here, etc .);
  • lack of support from friends and/or family;
  • doubts about your own capabilities; and
  • replaying bad or worst case scenarios in your head.

So what do you do when taking the first step feels impossible? Pause, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and believe that life is still full of choices . It doesn’t matter how many times you messed up, how old you are, or where you came from . Change happens the second you decide it is, even if you’re not fully ready.

Take small steps. Start with breakfast. Don’t have the usual bacon and eggs; why not try muesli or blueberry pancakes? Read something new, perhaps a blog or a book you’ve been meaning to but was too busy to pick up. Watch a movie you’d never think about seeing because it’s not your taste.

Focus on what you can control. You’re on the driver’s seat and the destination is yet to be decided.

12 Words For New Beginnings And Starting Over

new journey one word

Cheers to a fresh start

As the celebrations of a new year continue, you may be thinking about the fresh start ushered in by this coming year. This is a season of joyous beginnings for many. And one of the words we can use to refer to it may surprise you: it’s commencement . How is that, you ask?

Commencement is both “the ceremony of conferring degrees or granting diplomas at the end of the academic year” and also “an act or instance of commencing ; beginning,” reflecting an earlier use of the word. Not surprisingly then, it comes from the Latin cominitiāre (“to begin”).

Like graduates, we’re embarking on a new beginning—how meaningful it will be remains to be seen! But let’s take a look at the different and sometimes unusual words used to talk about beginnings and starting over.

From genesis to exordium , here are new ways to talk about your freshest endeavors.

For some, new beginnings can represent the incunabula of sweeping life changes. This word means “the earliest stages or first traces of anything.” Used in a different context, however, incunabula can refer to copies of books produced before 1501 from movable type.

The word genesis can be traced back to the Greek gígnesthai  meaning “to be born.” When written with a capital G , it refers to the first book of the Bible, but it is often used in a non-Biblical sense to mean “an origin, creation, or beginning.”

What does  amen mean at the end of a prayer? Find out here !

The beginning stages of a project or idea are often a little messy or imperfect. This word addresses that early state of disarray with three definitions: “not yet completed or fully developed,” “just begun or incipient ,” or “not organized; lacking order.”  Inchoate comes from Latin incoh ā re meaning  “to  begin,  start  work  on.”  An inchoation is a beginning or origin.

Coming from the Latin incipere meaning “begin, take in hand,” the word inception refers to a beginning, start, or commencement. Fans of the 2010 film of the same name might be familiar with another sense of the word: in science fiction, inception means instilling an idea into someone’s mind by entering their dreams.

Did you know you can use other films to brush up on your classic books? Read our article on some surprising movies that were inspired by literature.

recrudescence

Coming from a Latin term meaning “become raw again,” recrudescence means “breaking out afresh or into renewed activity.” As the Latin root suggests, this word was first used in medical contexts to describe a recurrence of symptoms after a period of remission , but it later took on a more rosy sense referring to the revival of something good.

Do you usher in the new year with a grand speech reflecting on the year prior and detailing your resolutions for the months to come? If so, we trust you had a pithy and effective exordium .

Used in this context, this word refers to the introductory part of an oration or treatise , but it can also be used to mean “the beginning of anything.”

This expression meaning “from the beginning” translates literally from Latin to “from the egg.” In literary contexts, it refers to a narrative that begins at the earliest possible chronological point as opposed to a story that starts in the middle ( in medias res ).

This usage can be traced back to the Latin poet Horace , who used the expression to note that Homer began the tale of the Trojan War in the middle of the story rather than with the twin egg from which Helen was born.

To say something is nascent is to say that it is in its earliest stages of existence or development. This word comes from the Latin nāscī  meaning “to be born.” As you may have guessed, the word natal meaning “of or pertaining to a person’s birth” shares this Latin ancestor.

To inaugurate something is to make a formal beginning of, as in, The end of World War II inaugurated the era of nuclear power . It can also mean “to induct into public office or introduce into public use with a ceremony.” Omens are at the heart of this term, as it comes from the Latin inaugurāre  meaning “to consecrate by augury (a person chosen for priesthood or other office).” An augur is a soothsayer, or “one of a group of ancient Roman officials charged with observing and interpreting omens for guidance in public affairs.”

Do you know the difference between inaugurate and swearing in ?

The word alpha has many meanings. But before English speakers came to use it to describe the most dominant person (or animal) in a group, they were using it in reference to the first letter of the Greek alphabet to mean “ the  first;  beginning ,” in contrast with the word  omega  (“the 24th and last letter of the Greek alphabet”).

And many more synonyms

If you’ve got a fresh craving for more synonyms to describe your point of departure or square one , look no further than Thesaurus.com . For example, you might try:

Encouraging Words for Kids Starting School

Back-to-school is a high-emotion time, whether a child is excited to see friends or nervous about changes, and that’s why you can’t go wrong with a few encouraging words for kids. If you know the child is thrilled about going back to school, you can go with an upbeat message that shows you share in their excitement.

  • “You’re going to rock 4th grade.”
  • “Can’t wait to watch you shine this year!”
  • “Another school year, another year of you being amazing.”
  • “Happy back-to-school time! Hope this year is the best one yet.”
  • “As you head into another year of school, I just want you to know how proud I am of all your hard work.”
  • “I can’t believe you’re already a senior! It’s been so fun watching you grow and learn all these years, and I know this year will be a great one.”

If the child is anxious about starting school or entering a new or unexpected phase of school—such as online or hybrid learning, or a school or teacher change—your message could offer friendly support.

  • “I’m thinking about you as you start a new school year!”
  • “Even though school is different, you’re the same smart kid. You can do this, and I’ll be there to cheer you on.”
  • “I know you’ll learn a lot in school this year, but you already have the most important lessons down. You’re kind, caring, thoughtful and just an all-around good person…and that’s something you’ll carry with you long after school is over.”
  • “You’re going to kick butt. And when you need a little help, you know I’ve got you.”
  • “As you start a new school year, I wanted to let you know I’m so proud of you for always trying your hardest.”
  • “A new school year means you’re one step closer to being DONE!”

Friends Continuing Their Education

Whether they’re leaving home for the first time to head to college far away or living at home and studying nearby, it’s a new beginning to celebrate. Encouraging college students, those in technical programs or anyone receiving a career certification is a great way to set them up for success. Your message could focus on the fact that they’ve made it this far, or you could look ahead.

  • “So proud of you for all you’ve done to get here.”
  • “Can’t wait to see where you go from here!”
  • “(Your college) is so lucky to have you!”
  • “We’re going to miss you like crazy, but we know you’re ready for this and you’re going to have the time of your life!”
  • “What an exciting new adventure—time to explore who you are and what you’re interested in. You’re going to love it.”
  • “The first-day-of-school jitters apply to grown-ups, too. But it’s an excellent excuse to buy shiny new school supplies.”
  • “Congratulations as you start a new chapter in life!”
  • “Even though you’re headed off to college, remember I’m always here for you and I’m only a phone call or text away.”

Graduation Messages

Graduation is a time to celebrate new beginnings and a life stage coming to an end. Whether they’re graduating from high school or a college master’s program, they definitely deserve some praise.

  • “So impressed with everything you’ve accomplished. Can’t wait to see what you do next!”
  • “No matter what you do next, I know you’ll bring your very own unique blend of smarts, courage and heart. Congratulations.”
  • “Nothing like a fresh, new certificate to hang on your office wall! Congrats!”

Good Luck Messages for a Big Move

New home, new city, new surroundings…a big move is a big deal. Your message could show optimism but also let your loved one know that you’re still with them, wherever they are.

  • “So excited for you and your new journey!”
  • “Everyone here is really going to miss you, but we can’t wait to hear all about your next adventure.”
  • “No amount of distance can keep us from texting each other 200 times a day.”

Encouraging Words for Empty Nesters

Becoming an empty nester is bittersweet, and your message can reflect that. Depending on your loved one’s circumstances, you could mention the pride they feel in their child or the fact that they did a great job preparing their child for the real world. You could also look ahead to the fun times they’ll have as an empty nester.

  • “As bittersweet as this time might be for you, I hope you know what a great job you’ve done to get to this place. Congratulations on raising such a wonderful child.”
  • “The fact that (your child) is so ready to be out in the world is a testament to the incredible parent you are. Good job, (Mama).”
  • “Congratulations on moving to the next stage of parenthood! Here’s to all the family memories you’ve made over the years and to all the good times still to come.”
  • “Welcome to the Empty Nester Club! Looking forward to sharing memories, kid updates and new adventures with you.”
  • “I promise, missing them gets easier. You might even learn to enjoy not tripping over the stuff they leave all over the house.”
  • “Yes, it’s weird when they leave. But you’ll get used to the quiet. And the clean bathroom. And not finding empty milk cartons in the fridge.”

Wishing Luck in a New Job

Big promotion or a new dream job? Time to celebrate! But if someone has been laid off and is taking a new position just to get by, they might not be excited so much as just thankful to have a job. Someone who was transferred to another department or location might be looking forward to the change, but also experiencing sadness over leaving their old role and co-workers.

Basically, approach this one with sensitivity and consider all angles when writing your message. When in doubt, keep your message super simple and just wish them the best.

  • “You did it! Congrats on getting your dream job!”
  • “What an exciting new opportunity! Can’t wait to hear all about the new job.”
  • “You’re seeing what happens when hard work, perseverance and talent finally pay off. So happy for you!”
  • “This new job is the start of something great—I just know it! Congratulations.”
  • “I’m jealous of your new co-workers because they get to work with YOU! We’re going to miss you around here.”
  • “Wishing you the best as you start in your new role.”
  • “I’m sorry your career path isn’t leading where you hoped it would. I’m sending good vibes and hoping your new team appreciates the experience and talent you bring with you!”
  • “Thinking of you and trusting that this is a stepping-stone along the path to something that makes you truly happy.”
  • “With your brains and talent, I just know you’ll make a positive contribution at your new job.”
  • “Congratulations on the new job. They’re so lucky to have you!
  • “It takes a lot of determination and hard work to start a business. Wishing you nothing but success as you begin this new adventure.”

  • “What are we going to do without you? Your contributions have been nothing short of incredible, and you will be so missed around here.”

Showing Support When a Relationship Ends

It’s hard to know what to say to a loved one who’s going through a divorce or the end of any significant relationship, but a caring message can really make a difference here. Your message will depend on how much you know about the relationship, but it’s always a good idea to stay out of any drama and just focus on being supportive. You don’t need to go into detail—a simple message of encouragement will show you’re thinking of them.

  • “You’re on my mind and in my heart.”
  • “Keeping you close in my thoughts.”
  • “I just wanted to let you know you’re on my mind and in my prayers.”
  • “I’m thinking of you, and I’m only a text or phone call away.”
  • “Whatever you need right now—a listening ear, a pint of ice cream, a bottle of wine—I’m here.”
  • “I’d love to help you through this transition any way I can.”
  • “Meals, babysitting, helping you pack—you name it, and I’m there.”
  • “I’m so sorry you have to experience the pain of divorce, but I’m happy you’re doing what’s right for you.”
  • “I know this wasn’t an easy decision to make for your family. Just want you to know I support you.”
  • “I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m here for you.”

Supporting Healthy Choices and Life Changes

Whether someone is making diet and exercise changes for a healthier future, breaking an addiction or making any other positive change, you can be there to cheer them on every step of the way. Your words can help give them confidence to push through any obstacles along the way.

  • “You’re making a big change, and that’s a really big deal.”
  • “I’m so proud of you for doing what’s right for you!”
  • “I’m rooting for you, every day, all the time.”
  • “Even when you might not always feel like it, you have the strength to do this!”
  • “It takes serious courage to get on this path and stay on it. Good for you.”
  • “You have so many people supporting you on this journey, and we’re here the whole way, no matter what.”

Coming Out or Transitioning

Coming out and transitioning are not “one and done” events. These are lifelong journeys, and the experience is different from one person to the next. Your message can show support and confirm that you’ll always be there for them.

  • “Coming out is a journey, and I can’t wait to celebrate with you every step of the way.”
  • “I’m so excited to call you by your true name. Congratulations on your transition!”
  • “I can’t imagine what this is like for you, but I’m here for you in whatever way you need.”

25 Bible Verses About Starting A New Journey (With Commentary)

Embarking on a new journey can be both exhilarating and intimidating. In this blog post, we’ll discover Bible verses that provide guidance and encouragement for those taking their first steps into uncharted territory. These verses will inspire confidence and faith in new beginnings.

Bible Verses About Starting A New Journey

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

This verse reminds us that when we embark on a new journey, we should not be afraid or discouraged because God is always with us. He commands us to be strong and courageous because He knows that stepping into the unknown can be daunting. With the assurance of God’s presence, we can face any challenges that come our way.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Starting a new journey requires us to trust in the Lord completely. We must resist the temptation to rely on our own understanding or human wisdom. Instead, we should submit our plans and desires to God and allow Him to guide our paths. When we put our trust in Him, He will lead us in the right direction and make our paths straight.

Isaiah 43:19

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

In this verse, God assures us that He is always doing new things in our lives. As we embark on a new journey, we can trust that He is already at work, making a way where there seems to be no way. Even in the most challenging and barren situations, God can bring forth streams of blessings and opportunities.

Philippians 3:13-14

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Starting a new journey requires us to let go of the past and focus on what lies ahead. Just as the Apostle Paul emphasizes, we should not dwell on our past mistakes, setbacks, or achievements. Instead, we should press on towards the goal that God has set for us. Our eyes should be fixed on Jesus, and we should strive to fulfill the calling He has placed on our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

When starting a new journey, it is reassuring to know that God has plans for our lives. He desires to bring prosperity, hope, and a bright future. Even when we are uncertain about what lies ahead, we can trust that God’s plans are good, and He will guide us every step of the way.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

In every new journey, God promises to instruct and teach us in the right way to go. He offers His divine counsel with a loving watchful eye upon us. When we seek His guidance and rely on Him, He will lead us along the path He has prepared for us, protecting us from harm and leading us towards success.

Psalm 37:23

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.”

As we delight in the Lord and commit our ways to Him, He takes delight in guiding our steps. When we trust in Him wholeheartedly, He ensures that our steps are firm and secure. He will never let us stumble or fall if we continue to seek Him and follow His leading on our new journey.

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

In the midst of a new journey, God’s word serves as a lamp to guide our steps and a light to illuminate our path. His teachings and principles act as a compass, showing us the right way to go. When we meditate on His word and allow it to shape our decisions, we can walk confidently in His divine guidance.

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Starting a new journey often requires a change in mindset. Instead of conforming to worldly standards and expectations, we are called to be transformed by renewing our minds according to God’s truth. When our minds are aligned with His will, we can discern His good, pleasing, and perfect plans for our lives.

Deuteronomy 31:8

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

As we embark on a new journey, we can find solace in knowing that the Lord goes before us. He promises to be our constant companion, never leaving us or forsaking us. In times of uncertainty or fear, we can take courage and trust that God is with us, guiding and protecting us every step of the way.

Jeremiah 33:3

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

In our new journey, we are invited to call upon the Lord, seeking His wisdom and guidance. He promises to answer us and reveal things beyond our understanding. Through prayer and communion with God, we can tap into His vast knowledge and receive insights that will lead us towards success and fulfillment.

Matthew 6:33

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

When starting a new journey, our ultimate priority should be seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness. When we prioritize His will and align our desires with His, He promises to provide for our needs. Instead of striving solely for worldly accomplishments, we should strive to live in obedience to God, and He will take care of everything else.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”

In our new journey, we can find comfort in knowing that the Lord is our shepherd. He will guide us, protect us, and provide us with everything we need. As long as we remain under His shepherding care, we can rest assured that we will lack nothing and have all that we require to fulfill our purpose.

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Starting a new journey may come with challenges and obstacles. However, we are reminded not to grow weary in doing good. It is essential to persevere and remain steadfast in our commitment to follow God’s path. When we continue to press on, we can be confident that in due time, we will reap a harvest of blessings and fulfilled promises.

Psalm 121:1-2

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

When embarking on a new journey, we may encounter daunting challenges ahead. In those moments, we can lift our eyes to the Lord, recognizing that our help comes from Him alone. As the creator of heaven and earth, He is more than capable of guiding us and providing all the assistance we need on our journey.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

Starting a new journey often requires wisdom, and God encourages us to ask Him for it. He promises to give generously and without finding fault when we seek His wisdom. By acknowledging our dependence on God’s guidance and seeking His wisdom, we can navigate our new journey with confidence and make wise decisions along the way.

1 Peter 5:7

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

As we embark on a new journey, anxiety and worry may try to creep into our minds. However, we are reminded to cast all our burdens and worries on the Lord because He cares for us deeply. Letting go of anxiety and entrusting our concerns to Him allows us to move forward with peace and confidence in His loving care.

Psalm 16:11

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

In our new journey, we can trust that God will make known to us the path of life. He will guide us towards the fulfillment of our purpose, and in His presence, we will experience true joy and eternal pleasures. As we seek and follow Him, we can rest assured that our journey will be filled with meaningful experiences and divine blessings.

Matthew 28:20

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

When stepping into a new journey, Jesus promises us His constant presence. He affirms that He will be with us always, even until the end of the age. We can take comfort and draw strength from the assurance that we are never alone. With Jesus by our side, we can face anything that this new journey holds.

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

When we surrender our lives to Christ, we become new creations. Starting a new journey allows us to leave behind the old and embrace the new. The old habits, sin, and burdens no longer define us. Instead, we can walk in the freedom and grace of being made new in Christ, ready to embark on an exciting journey of growth and transformation.

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

As we begin a new journey, it is vital to find joy and delight in the Lord above all else. When our hearts are aligned with His, He promises to grant us the desires of our hearts. However, this does not mean we will receive everything we want, but rather, our desires will be in alignment with His will, bringing us true joy and fulfillment.

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

When starting a new journey, we may feel weary and burdened by the weight of the unknown. Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest for our souls. He calls us to take His yoke upon us, to learn from Him and embrace His gentle and humble nature. In surrendering to Him, we can find true rest and peace, even in the midst of uncertainty.

Proverbs 16:9

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

Humans often make plans for their journey, but ultimately, it is the Lord who establishes our steps. As we trust in Him and acknowledge His sovereignty, He redirects our paths and leads us on a journey that aligns with His divine plan. Letting go of our own plans and surrendering to His guidance brings us peace and assurance.

Psalm 119:133

“Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.”

In our new journey, we ought to surrender our footsteps to God and ask Him to direct us according to His word. We desire to walk in obedience and alignment with His will. By seeking His guidance and relying on His strength, we can avoid being ruled by sin and walk in paths of righteousness.

Hebrews 13:8

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Amidst the changes and uncertainties that come with a new journey, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus Christ remains the same. He is unchanging in His character, love, and faithfulness. Regardless of what we face on our journey, we can trust that He will never leave us, and His promises remain steadfast.

No matter where you are in your current faith journey, spend some time talking to God.      Glorify Him, praise Him, thank Him for this past year and His faithfulness. Thank Him that you are still alive and that He still has good plans and a purpose for your life.      Dedicate this year to Him. Tell Him you're ready to dedicate your life to Him. Ask Him to help you desire Him more and more.      Talk to Him about the challenges and concerns in your life right now. Tell Him your fears, frustrations and worries. Tell Him what is holding you back from releasing all your cares to Him. Sit in silence. Ask God to direct your thought to Him and help you to be attentive to any words or phrases He may be bringing to your mind. Wait on Him. Listen. Write down any words that come to your mind.

There's even a section called the BRAIN DUMP which asks you to write anything that comes to your mind.... Questions like: *In my spiritual walk I want to... *With my daily living I want to... *With my relationships I want to...

A life’s journey devoted to giving back comes full circle.

Awa Cisse

Awa Cisse (Photo by David Liebowitz)

There’s a word that carries deep cultural meaning in Awa Cisse’s native Senegal; Téranga , which comes from the Wolof language, connotes the values of selflessness and generosity, and the importance of giving back to one’s community.

For Cisse, the word téranga  isn’t just a reminder of her Senegalese roots, it’s a sort of guidepost for how she wants to live her life.

As a young girl she frequented hospitals for a variety of reasons. Throughout these visits, she developed a profound appreciation for all the people who give care to patients — the doctors and nurses, of course, but also those who don’t typically receive accolades.

“ There is this whole ecosystem of care, from the people who greet you at the front door to those who assist you when you’re leaving,” said Cisse, who is part of Trumbull College. “Every single piece of the puzzle is important, and it all helps make everything work. This is what inspired me to pursue a life in health care.”

For Cisse, a member of the Eli Whitney Students Program (EWSP), who graduates from Yale with a degree in molecular, cellular, developmental biology and French studies, that journey has taken many turns — some of which even she can’t believe.

She enrolled in nursing school straight out of high school, and over the next few years she worked in clinics and hospitals in her native city, Dakar, and later in Diembering, a remote village of southern Senegal. Eventually, she returned to Dakar to become the head nurse in a clinic.

While her journey began in Senegal, in 2018 it brought her to Georgia, where she was reunited with her father, who had come to the United States earlier. For Cisse, the change meant a temporary pause in her health care career; for a year, she worked at a call center, which not only provided a much-needed paycheck but also an opportunity to practice her English.

A year later, she enrolled in Georgia State University’s Perimeter College to resume her studies. She quickly discovered that the dimensions of health care were much wider than she’d ever imagined. “I had previously a very narrow view of what being in health care meant,” she says. “I didn’t really associate science as a component that is integral to being in health care.”

At Perimeter College, mentors helped Cisse discover new opportunities and provided life-changing support. And as she built up what her advisor described as a “ladder of knowledge” in the sciences, she began to fully appreciate the link between scientific research and the delivery of clinical health care.

Cisse was completing her associate’s degree when she learned about the Eli Whitney Student Program (EWSP), which offers students with “non-traditional” backgrounds an opportunity to receive a Yale College education. While she admits she couldn’t locate Yale on a map at the time, and was skeptical that she would be accepted, she applied for admission and was accepted.

In 2021 Cisse moved to New Haven and immersed herself in her new community. (“Community is important to me,” she says. “That’s what téranga, is all about. That’s what was instilled in me!”) She enrolled in as many different kinds of courses as she could. She discussed school projects with classmates over pizza. She savored hours spent talking with friends about school, and about life, in Yale’s dining halls.

And she continued to explore the science underpinning potential public health solutions — including in the lab of Amy Bei, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, where researchers use pathogen genomics and field epidemiology to test the role of genetic diversity in combatting malaria.

Working in Bei’s lab, Cisse even had the chance to conduct fieldwork in Senegal and be again reconnected with the rural communities.

“ I returned to these places where I’d first learned to challenge myself and to learn about health care,” Cisse said. “But this time I was returning to my country as an apprentice scientist.”

Jalen brunson had a 1-word answer to sum up his feelings on the knicks losing game 7, share this article.

It’s probably really hard to feel this way after losing a Game 7 at home, but this season legitimately was successful for the New York Knicks. They had their best regular-season record in a decade-plus. Perhaps more importantly, they were on the verge of an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals despite a rash of injuries to several key players up and down the roster.

Jalen Brunson was one of those hurt players. He suffered a fractured hand during the Knicks’ 130-109 Game 7 defeat to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. When asked if he thought the Knicks’ season was a success, given all the adversity they overcame , Brunson kept it simple.

He was (understandably) NOT happy:

Jalen Brunson said he doesn’t view this season as a success for the Knicks. 🎥: @sny_knicks pic.twitter.com/bTFgTxjK8V — The Sporting News (@sportingnews) May 19, 2024

Brunson would clarify his thoughts, centering them around the Knicks’ failure to win a championship. Again, I get it:

Brunson on why he doesn’t consider this season a success: “Did we win a championship? Did we come close?” https://t.co/qWJmJTXHKI — Fred Katz (@FredKatz) May 19, 2024

Unless you win the last game of the year, it’ll always be hard to reflect on a sports season as a success. But I have a feeling Brunson will eventually feel differently about this year for the Knicks. And he should.

One Japanese Word Changed the Course of Her Career

Devin Halbal had amassed hundreds of thousands of TikTok followers with her inspirational videos. Then she went to Asia.

A young woman stands in front of promotional posters for a store.

By Jessica Roy

In January, the travel and fashion influencer Devin Halbal decided to take a trip to Kurashiki, a city in the Okayama Prefecture of Japan. Ms. Halbal, a Queens-born 26-year-old who goes by the username “Hal Baddie” on TikTok, had spent four years traveling around Europe with an extra-long selfie stick and a dream, sharing videos with hundreds of thousands of followers.

Ms. Halbal had become known for coining inspirational phrases, like “ doll check-in ” as a proud calling card to her fellow trans girls, and “ Met Gala behavior ,” for when you’re feeling and acting confident about what you’re wearing. Her fame seemed to peak in 2022 when she was profiled by W magazine and Rolling Stone, and invited on a brand trip to Ibiza by Loewe. But after globe-trotting and a few months off with friends in New York, she wanted to do more than “fashion and affirmations,” she said in a recent interview.

It was with this mind-set that she set off for Asia. Ms. Halbal said she loves finding places that are off the beaten path and close to nature — and Kurashiki, a small city of less than half a million people known as the birthplace of jeans in Japan , fit the bill.

She was experimenting, posting different types of travel videos. At the same time, she was learning Japanese, and there was one word she kept hearing everywhere: kudasai, which translates to “may I please have.”

“It kept on ringing in my head,” she said. “I would just be sitting down on a random Tuesday and I would just be thinking to myself: kudasai , kudasai .” She decided to make a video of herself using the word while walking down the street: “Sushi, kudasai,” (sushi, please) she says in a sing-songy voice while strutting with her selfie stick. “Ocha, kudasai.” (Tea, please.)

To date, the video has gotten more than 13.5 million views.

@hal.baddie The only words I know in Japanese. ♬ original sound - Devin Halbal

“I had no idea, out of all my content, that the one video that just goes super, super viral all throughout Asia is me saying five words,” Ms. Halbal said.

The video’s success convinced her to extend her stay in Japan; she went to Tokyo, Takamatsu, Mt. Fuji and Yamanashi, making videos about food , travel and the Japanese language. She made friends and volunteered on a farm . She started not just getting recognized on the street, but swarmed by fans . A quick trip to pick up some bubble tea became a two hour meet-and-greet. Then the fan accounts started cropping up, as did media coverage , calling her the “kudasai girl.”

“Now, ‘kudasai’ is the trend word in Japan,” a Japanese TikToker named Sorari said in a video posted last month, expressing surprise about how quickly and thoroughly Ms. Halbal’s content spread.

Ms. Halbal’s trip, originally planned for two weeks, turned into two months, and her reach expanded beyond Japan to other countries.

She started getting comments in Korean, Thai, Hindi, Nepali and Mandarin. “I’m like, ‘I have to do an Asia tour,’” she said. “What better way to continue learning about other cultures and continue learning about languages?”

Ms. Halbal attributes her success to the way she tries to actually speak the language and engage with different cultures wherever she goes. “I’m actually trying to pronounce the food in the way that they pronounce it — I’m not doing it with an American accent,” she said.

Last month, Ms. Halbal left Japan and traveled to Busan, South Korea. She’s still saying kudasai, but now she’s also started incorporating Korean into her vernacular, including the word for please, juseyo .

Now, the largest percentage of her followers on Instagram , where Ms. Halbal also shares her videos, are from the United States, but South Korea comes in second. At a recent meet-up at Korea University in Seoul, hundreds of fans crowded around her on the street, jostling to take selfies with her, or to give her food recommendations and ask her to speak in their language.

“Showcasing people’s food, showcasing people’s culture, in a way is a sense of community,” Ms. Halbal said. “You’re saying: I respect you, I value you and I value your food.”

She is continuing to tour Asia, with plans to potentially go to China, the Philippines and Malaysia. She said she was also weighing a permanent move to South Korea or Japan.

“I feel really at home here,” Ms. Halbal said. “People are so sweet. They treat me like I’m their family. So even though I’m ‘solo traveling,’ I never feel alone here.”

In South Korea, she said, some fans have started asking her to get into pop music.

“Especially in Korea, I think there’s a certain rhyme and cadence to the way that I’m speaking that they really want me to make music,” she said.

Is she ready to make the leap?

“I’m entering my K-pop star era,” Ms. Halbal teased.

Message of Thanks

I would not be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family and their endless love. In addition, I have been blessed by the support of this community of people over the last two years at HDS.

I first would like to express my deepest gratitude to my academic advisor, Professor Janet Gyatso, for her profound mentorship and support. You exemplified to me how to navigate through the complexities of scholarship with wisdom and grace. My special thanks extend to Professor James Robson for his generosity in providing me with a Reading and Research class despite his extremely tight schedule. You showed me how one professor's leadership could bring such a transformative impact on not just a student but an institution.

Professor Ryuichi Abe, words cannot adequately express how indebted I am to you for your boundless trust in my potential and for providing me with an opportunity to serve as a teaching fellow for your class. Your warm words of encouragement after my PhD rejection have been the guiding light in the dark sea of suffering. Thanks to you, I'm dreaming again, and I'm dreaming higher.

Their collective advisorship allowed me to reach new heights in both scholarship and personal growth. I am incredibly proud to be their advisee.

I also sincerely appreciate the friendship that I formed with the students of Regional Studies of East Asia (RSEA). For all of you who are graduating with me, thank you for taking me as an honorary RSEA member. I found the community I truly belonged to, and I will forever cherish every single second of laughter and tears I shared with you.

Randy, thank you for being the best boss in the world.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my roommate and friend Kent Zheng (a student of RSEA '24 and incoming PhD at Harvard EALC), who has shown me the true meaning of scholarship and friendship over the past six years since our time together in college. Your unwavering dedication to academic excellence and genuine kindness and warmth have been the greatest form of academic and emotional support I always relied on. I am deeply thankful for your companionship and indelible impact on my academic and personal journey.

I am grateful that this wonderful community that I loved also loved me.

Future Plans

I plan to study Japanese at Inter-University Center in Yokohama for one year. I hope to come back next year for the doctoral program.
