NET launches virtual capitol website
To coincide with Nebraska’s sesquicentennial celebration, NET has launched an interactive, online exploration of the Nebraska State Capitol building.
The “Nebraska Virtual Capitol” website is a resource that offers information and digital tours of the inside and outside of Nebraska’s capitol and the governor’s mansion. The website includes details on the history, art and architecture of the buildings that serve as the heart of state government.
A few clicks reveal photos and information about parts of each structure, including the elegant doors of the Warner Chamber, the amazing view looking up from the State Capitol rotunda and the formal drawing room in the mansion.
The “Nebraska Virtual Capitol” website includes 360-degree virtual tours with “hot spot” links to details and close-up images of rooms, mosaics and murals. It also features links to a curriculum website with lesson plans and other resources for teachers designing Nebraska studies and art lessons.
The “Nebraska Virtual Capitol” curriculum is targeted to K-12 students, with an emphasis on fourth graders who are studying Nebraska history.
Former Nebraska First Lady Sally Ganem helped launch create of the website. Support was also drawn from the Nebraska Arts Council and nearly 100 donors and contributors across the state.

Few buildings reveal truths, inspire greatness, and narrate the creation of humanity. Creative Genius: The Art of the Nebraska Capitol documents such a place. The Nebraska Capitol—once called “a peak in the history of building accomplishment”—breaks the boundaries of architecture and art. Creative Genius unveils new images of the art of the Capitol in striking detail. Included are some of the greatest works by some of America’s most recognized artists and visionaries. Along with remarkable visuals, Creative Genius delivers insights into the extraordinary stories and vision behind the art. Steeped in history and lore, the building narrates the creation of the universe and life, as well as the epic journey of the peoples of Nebraska. This book reveals the themes driving the art, chronicles the stories behind artists and their creations, and celebrates the beautify embodied in this influential building.
The Nebraska Capitol is Unique Because of the Artwork
When the Nebraska State Capitol was designed, the art received as much attention as the columns and stone that hold up the building. The artwork of the Capitol tells the story of Nebraska. It tells us where we came from, how we govern, how we live, how we create, and more.
This website is meant to tell those stories once again. As we take time to consider our shared histories and stories, the artwork within the Nebraska State Capitol reminds us of where we started and where we can go. The Nebraska Capitol Art Experience also celebrates the men and women who made the building what it is today.
