The trip with Viator to Memphis from Nashville was as great as we had hoped! The driver was prompt with pickups and drop offs and Graceland was well worth the long day (for over 80's sisters... Graceland lived up to our expectations and was most interesting, especially the surrounding buildings. Sun Records was a trip down Memory Lane with all the equipment used to make Elvis's records before he signed with RCA, for whom I worked for many years. Thanks for a good day!!

A long day but well worth it - was told to be in lobby by 6:30 but wasn’t picked up til 7:05 (our hotel was in Midtown), then a small shuttle to a larger bus near the stadium, left Nashville by 7:30 for Memphis. Our driver Richard was great! On the ride were 2 good DVDs of Elvis which made the 3 hour bus ride go quickly. VIP tour is the only way to go at Graceland can definitely see everything in 3 hours. Sun Studio was awesome, and Richard has the best recommendation for ribs in Memphis.

Great to see Graceland, loved it! But our driver, forgot her name was very Rude and arrogant. We went on 17th August hopefully this driver is identified and given more training on customer service.

Wonderful tour! Bus driver was great! Stopped for snacks both ways. The self guided tour of Graceland was very informative! The guide @ Sun Records was a “hoot”! Overall a fabulous day!

My family took the 3 hour bus tour from Nashville to Memphis. We boarded a smaller Gray Line Tour bus at Music Valley Drive office and transferred to meet the large coach bus and other passengers. It was a smooth process. Tonya showed videos of Graceland and Elvis's life on our bus ride...getting us all excited for the big day. Passed the travel time quickly. Bathroom on bus was clean. Seats weren't the most comfortable though. Tonya had a few blankets for us that were chilled from the air conditioning. She did her best to keep things regulated for everyone's comfort. She pointed out points of interests/landmarks on our trip as well. She was very personable and shared lots of great information/suggestions to make our visit in Memphis more memorable. Having the VIP pass gave the group quicker access to things, without having to wait in long lines. Definitely the way to go. Graceland was an awesome bucket list one time experience. As moving emotionally as visiting Pearl Harbor. Peabody Hotel was beautiful but didn't stay to watch ducks walk. Beale Street was a bit of let down compared to Broadway in Nashville. It was a long day...but well worth it!

The drivers were absolutely lovely--considerate, respectful, helpful--and they did an excellent job. The promptness was appreciated. Every departure and arrival was as promised. I heartily recommend this company and tour!

This was an awesome experience, however the Graceland part of the tour was too rushed, numerous people said this that were on the tour. There is not enough time to do Graceland, Sun Studios and Beale Street. We were rushed to complete the Graceland part of the tour and had to chose what to view as we were moving on and couldn't complete it all.

We loved this trip! Tanya was great! We felt safe and secure the whole trip, great driver! So worth traveling from Nashville to see Graceland, very comfortable and fun. Sun Studios was such a great experience as well. And then listening to some great blues on Beale Street! what a way to end the day! fantastic.

Tonya was our driver to Graceland, she was great. Funny, informative and generally entertaining. The trip was on my bucket list, and was totally worth the trip. We enjoyed the day, found it very informative and loved seeing where Elvis lived and all the memorabilia. I would recommend this trip to friends.

We had just an excellent day in spite of the damp weather.Gray Lines were very accommodating with pick-up and delivery places. The driver was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.Would recommend this trip to everyone.

All the drivers were wonderful. The day was long but well worth the time. Go if you can there is more to see than the past with the new museum area across the street.

the tour was more than we expected and the guide was very informative. We learned a lot more about Elvis on this tour than we did when he was alive. I also saw him when he was in Lake Tahoe. My friends and I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the day.

Rendezvous BBQ Lunch

Memphis is the pork barbecue mecca of the world, and there are great joints in every nook and cranny of this town. And while everyone has a favorite, few can question that the Rendezvous is a quintessential Memphis experience. For over 70 years, the Vergos family has been serving their signature dry rub ribs, chicken and brisket in a basement through a downtown alley across from the Peabody Hotel. And while the world outside has changed considerably, very little has changed in that alley basement.

Sun Studio Tour

Sun Studio is known worldwide as “The Birthplace of Rock ’n’ Roll”. It is the discovery location of musical legends and genres of the 50’s from B.B. King and Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. Stand in the very same spot that Elvis first recorded. Your tour guide will tell you the inside stories of B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf and Ike Turner before Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison who were all drawn to the new Sun Sound.

Peabody Hotel

With a style and tradition befitting one of Memphis’ grandest, most legendary hotels, The Peabody Memphis offers a magnificent bridge between the “Blues City’s” celebrated past and cosmopolitan present. Nestled in the heart of downtown, our historic Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond hotel offers a one-of-a-kind experience just blocks from Beale Street, the Memphis Rock ‘n Soul Museum, Fed-Ex Forum, Sun Studio, the Orpheum Theatre, and the Renasant Convention Center.

Known as the “South’s Grand Hotel,” The Peabody is legendary for its charm, elegance, gracious hospitality and rich history. This Memphis icon, opened in 1869, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is world-famous for its five resident ducks, who march daily through the lobby at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Beale Street

In the first half of the 20th century, Beale Street served as the inspiration behind many blues hits and creative works by musicians such as W.C. Handy, who wrote “Beale Street Blues.” From the 1920s to 1940s, artists such as Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong and B.B. King played on the street and subsequently developed the legendary Memphis blues sound. Today, it continues to be a hub for music, nightlife, dining and the arts.

Arcade Restaurant Breakfast

It’s like a trip back in time! It is this nostalgic feeling that has attracted photographers, artists, writers, and movie makers from around the world. Scenes from Mystery Train, Great Balls of Fire, The Client, The Firm, 21 Grams, Elizabethtown, Walk the Line, and My Blueberry Nights, just to name a few, have all been filmed in the restaurant. At one time, even Elvis was a regular and his booth is preserved for all to see and photograph.

The Guest House at Graceland

The Guest House at Graceland is just steps away from the music world’s most important and beloved landmark. When you visit The Guest House, you’ll enjoy all the luxurious amenities that would make Elvis proud. Inspired by the “make-yourself-at-home” warmth that Elvis always showed his guests, The Guest House at Graceland reflects Elvis’ style and the charm of Graceland. From the Southern colonial features to specialty suites with Priscilla Presley’s design supervision, every facet of The Guest House has a touch of grace and a dash of rock ‘n’ roll that guests will enjoy after exploring Graceland and Memphis.

Guest House at Graceland Hotel Room

Graceland Tour

From his early stardom in 1957 to his death in 1977, Elvis made Graceland his personal oasis, and all of his original touches remain today. Graceland was more than a mansion, it was where Elvis’ family grew up and enjoyed life together. Guests will take a tour of the mansion and its grounds. Snap a pic in front of the Graceland mansion gates, designed with help from Elvis himself. Then step into iconic spaces including the glam living room where Elvis gathered with family and friends and the swanky Jungle Room, which doubled as a makeshift recording studio. The mansion tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where fans place tributes on Elvis’ grave daily during operating hours.

Guests will also enjoy full access to the all-new Elvis Presley Entertainment Complex which includes museums dedicated to Presley’s cars and custom jets, exhibits of his career and life and interactive experiences. Guests have the opportunity to spread out and enjoy the exhibits at their own pace, in their own space.

Memphis - Home of the Blues

Memphis is often referred to as the Home of the Blues. Beale Street, a historic street lined with blues clubs and restaurants, played a pivotal role in the development of the blues genre, with legendary musicians like B.B. King and W.C. Handy performing there.

Elvis Presley - King of Rock & Roll

Elvis began his music career in 1954 with Sun Records in Memphis. The label's owner, Sam Phillips, is often credited with discovering Elvis, though it was actually his assistant, Marion Keisker, who first took note of him.

Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn rose from humble beginnings in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, to become a trailblazing country music icon, known for her poignant, autobiographical songs that spoke candidly about the lives and challenges of working-class women. Her enduring legacy is marked by groundbreaking hits like "Coal Miner's Daughter," through which she carved a path for future generations of female artists in the traditionally male-dominated genre of country music.

Nashville - Music City, USA

Nashville is globally recognized for its profound influence on the country music industry, hosting iconic venues like the Grand Ole Opry House, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the historic Ryman Auditorium.

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton rose from humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to become a towering figure in country music, known for her prolific songwriting, distinctive voice, and philanthropic efforts. With timeless hits like "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," her impact transcends music, embodying resilience and generosity, and her Imagination Library initiative has endeared her to millions as a champion of childhood literacy.

Great Smoky Mountains

The Smokies are among the oldest mountains in the world, formed 200-300 million years ago. Their age contributes to the rounded, gentle slopes that contrast with the sharp ridges found in younger mountain ranges.

Day 2 Atlanta - Nashville

Atlanta is a dynamic city with a fascinating history. Founded in 1837 as a community at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad, it was virtually burnt to the ground during the US Civil War. Undeterred, the city rose from the ashes and became the centre of the Civil Rights movement in the 20th century. On this morning’s tour, you’ll discover its many highlights including the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Olympic Park and the impressive Georgia State Capitol building.

Later we'll drive to Nashville for a two night stay. On your free evening be sure to explore the city's Broadway and Honky Tonk Highway, a strip of venues where there is live music 365 days a year.

Day 3 Nashville

We have a fabulous music-themed day in store for you today. It begins as you step inside the hallowed halls of Studio B, which has been dubbed the ‘birthplace of the Nashville Sound’, a popular style of country music. It was built in 1957 and over two decades, many hits were recorded here by artists including Elvis Presley. Standing in the very studio where he recorded ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ with the lights dimmed and his incredible voice flowing from the speakers, is sure to be a truly special moment. You’re also going to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, an incredible museum packed full of exhibits and music-themed memorabilia.

There's one more exciting experience to come if you choose to attend an optional evening of live music at the Grand Ole Opry. Take your seats for the world-famous show where some of today’s best artists celebrate the joy of country music.

Day 4 Memphis

The next great musical city you'll visit is Memphis, standing proudly on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. When we arrive this afternoon, we're going to set off together to discover some of its many highlights. They include the Riverfront, historic Cotton Row, and Beale Street, the home of the blues. On this iconic street, music emanates from every open door, and street performers entertain the crowds. You could perhaps head back here for a drink and dinner this evening.

Day 5 Memphis

Memphis is synonymous with Elvis Presley, and today we're going to find out about this connection. We'll pay a visit to Sun Studios, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' made his first recordings back in 1954.

This is followed by Graceland, where we'll take a fascinating guided tour of the opulent mansion that was his home from 1957 until his death in 1977. Here you can fully immerse yourself in his career and personal life, exploring the famous Jungle Room, living room, kitchen, TV room, pool room and other highlights. The tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where Elvis is buried alongside his parents.

We'll also find time today to visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located on the site of the Stax recording studio and record label of legends such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. This is sure to be a wonderful highlight of your holiday, and you can round it off by enjoying dinner wherever you fancy in Memphis – ask your Holiday Director for recommendations if you wish.

Day 6 Memphis - at leisure

Today has been left free for you to explore more of Memphis at leisure. Maybe you'll choose to visit the National Civil Rights Museum, located at the former Lorraine Motel. Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at this very spot in April 1968 and the museum’s fascinating exhibits tell inspiring stories about the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. There are plenty of other options too, including the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.

Alternatively, if you enjoyed your visit to Graceland yesterday, today's optional excursion is sure to be tempting. Why not come with us to Tupelo, to see the house where Elvis was born. You'll also get to visit a fantastic museum displaying one of the most remarkable collections of Elvis memorabilia in the world.

Day 7 Vicksburg

We’re going to take to the road today, leaving Memphis behind and crossing the border into Mississippi. We’ll travel through the Mississippi Delta, said to be the birthplace of the Delta Blues – a style of Blues music that developed in the early 20th century. Making a stop in the small town of Indianola, we’ll visit the BB King Museum to learn about the life and music of the legendary ‘King of the Blues’.

After time for lunch, our journey will continue to Vicksburg.

Day 8 Natchez - New Orleans

As we head deeper south, we're going to make a stop in Natchez, a historic town on the banks of the Mississippi River. This laid-back destination is filled with grand mansions and we’ll visit one today to learn about southern life in the antebellum period, before the Civil War. We’ll admire the stunning architecture of this palatial home and see some of the antiques it was originally furnished with.

Our ultimate destination today is the 'Big Easy', or New Orleans, home to another musical genre - jazz. When we arrive, a sightseeing tour will introduce us to many of the city’s highlights, including the stunning triple-steepled St Louis Cathedral, and cemeteries filled with unique, white-marble above-the-ground tombs.

Your hotel is located just steps from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter. It is the city’s vibrant heart and oldest district, and tonight you are free to make your own discoveries. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, so why not head out and see what’s on offer for dinner.

Day 9 New Orleans

You’re going to uncover the charm of the French Quarter and learn all about its history on a walking tour this morning. A Local Guide will lead us through the historic streets and point out highlights including Jackson Square, Pirate's Alley, and the world-famous Bourbon Street. The walk ends at a restaurant, where we’ll enjoy a buffet brunch accompanied by live jazz, in a pretty outdoor courtyard.

The rest of the day is yours to explore the galleries and boutiques of the French Quarter, or if you prefer, you could perhaps head to City Park and discover the Botanical Garden or the New Orleans Museum of Art. We also offer an optional swamp and bayou tour, where you’ll glide through the tranquil beauty of Louisiana’s waterways by boat, looking out for alligators, raccoons and more.

Day 10 New Orleans - at leisure

With so much to discover in New Orleans, you can spend the day exploring at your own pace. Perhaps take a stroll through the open-air French Market and shop for souvenirs to take home before stopping for coffee and beignets - French-style doughnuts - at the famous Café du Monde.

If you’re still keen to discover more, your Holiday Director is hosting an optional afternoon trip on an authentic paddle steamer. Once the only way to travel along the waterways of the South, this trip will take you on a glorious journey back to the 19th-century heyday of these iconic vessels. Sit back and listen to a live jazz band play as you sail along the mighty Mississippi taking in views of New Orleans from the water.

Day 11 New Orleans/UK

Your holiday comes to an end today, so make the most of your last few hours before we drive you to the airport in good time for your flight home.

National Civil Rights Museum - Lorraine Motel National Civil Rights Museum - Lorraine Motel

Recent travelers agreed the National Civil Rights Museum should be at the top of anyone's list of things to see in Memphis. Housed in the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, the museum features multimedia presentations on the civil rights movement. With the help of 260 artifacts, more than 40 films, oral histories, interactive media and external listening posts, visitors are guided through four centuries of history. During your self-guided tour, you'll view artifacts paramount to the movement, such as a Greyhound bus ridden by Freedom Riders. You'll also have the chance to see King's motel room, where he spent his final hours.

Reviewers described the museum as "surreal" and "incredibly moving." They went on to note the staging of the exhibits is "top-notch" and said the museum helped put seminal events of the period into context for a better overall understanding of the movement. Visitors should budget at least two to three hours to tour the entire facility. The museum is also a featured stop on many of the best Memphis tours . The Legacy Building, where James Earl Ray fired the shot that ended Dr. King's life, is closed until 2025 as part of a multimillion-dollar expansion project that will add exhibits and transform the adjacent Founders Park.

Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum

If you're a fan of soul music or rock 'n' roll and want to learn more about how Memphis played a part in the roots of these genres, you should consider adding the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum to your itinerary. Exploring Memphis' musical influence, from the rural field hollers (enslaved workers who sang songs while laboring) and sharecroppers (those who leased land to farm) of the 1930s to the emergence of Sun , Stax and Hi Records, this Smithsonian Institution affiliate offers visitors a comprehensive music experience. With the help of an audio guide, travelers can explore seven galleries featuring more than 30 instruments, 40 costumes and 100 songs.

Recent visitors said this museum helps put Memphis' musical history in context and said the "sound comes alive" thanks to the variety of artifacts and details on display here. However, some were a little unimpressed with the museum's size and said they expected more considering its Smithsonian affiliation. Still, even with its relatively small size, travelers found the museum fascinating. And with its central location on Beale Street , you can easily swing by some of the city's other top attractions before or after your museum visit.

The museum opened in 2015, inviting guests to explore interactive exhibits and see rare memorabilia that once belonged to icons like Isaac Hayes, Jerry Lee Lewis, and recent stars like Justin Timberlake.

The museum is small but packs a lot of punch for the price, according to recent visitors. Visitors were wowed after learning about a lot of musicians' unexpected ties to Memphis. Several wish the exhibits had more detail about each since and note you can see everything in about an hour.

Peabody Ducks Peabody Ducks free

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're over 21, one of the best places to enjoy the duck march is from The Peabody's lobby bar. Arrive at least an hour early to claim a barstool and enjoy the show while seasoned bartenders keep you hydrated. – Kelsey J. Lawrence

Originally constructed in 1869 (before being moved and rebuilt at its present location in 1925), The Peabody Memphis has held a long-standing reputation as one of the finest hotels in the South. While the building itself is quite breathtaking, the real attraction here is the march of the Peabody Ducks. In fact, the ducks are a featured stop on many of the best Memphis tours . Since the 1930s, these North American mallards have been a staple feature of the historic hotel. Visit around 11 a.m. when the ducks make their way from their Royal Duck Palace on the hotel's rooftop and down the elevator where they'll then walk the red carpet through the hotel lobby and into the Peabody Fountain. Join the onlookers that gather along the carpet to tap their toes to the beat of John Philip Sousa's "King Cotton March" as the ducks waddle past. At 5 p.m., the tune picks up again and the ducks hop out of the fountain and make their way back along the red carpet to their home.

Malco Summer Drive-In Malco Summer Drive-In

Go back in time at the Malco Summer Drive-In, one of about 300 drive-in theaters in the U.S. Don't let the name fool you: This drive-in is open year-round. (It's called the Summer Drive-In because it's located on Summer Avenue.) As the sun sets, pull your vehicle up to one of four large outdoor screens, tune your radio dial and enjoy a new release from the comfort of your car. Bring your own snacks and drinks or purchase them from the concession stand. The best part? You won't have to worry about anyone kicking the back of your seat – unless you bring the kiddos along! It's just you, your ride, and the latest blockbuster playing on the silver screen. Check out the website to see what's playing and buy tickets in advance.

Recent visitors said the drive-in is a flashback to the good ol' days with a wide variety of concessions available at a fraction of the price of a normal movie theater. While nostalgia is guaranteed, having respectful neighbors is not. Previous moviegoers do warn that others may leave their headlights on or honk their horn, which has the potential to distract from the good time.

Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum

The Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, or the Burkle Estate, draws visitors back to the pre-Civil War era. The main house was once used as a shelter for slaves along the Underground Railroad. The home's owner, Jacob Burkle, was a part of the antislavery movement and offered refuge to those trying to escape slavery. The 19th-century home is filled with secret passages and trap doors that were used by runaway slaves attempting to flee north to freedom. The estate also features artifacts portraying the brutal conditions for slaves in the South.

Recent visitors agreed that while the museum is small, it's full of information and offers a powerful look into the lives of enslaved people during this time. Reviewers said the tour guides were informative and engaging, and described the experience as a "moving history lesson."

Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art

At 24,000 square feet, the Belz Museum displays more than 1,400 objects across five permanent galleries. Three of these house Asian art, much of which dates back to the Qing Dynasty of China (1644 to 1911). The fourth exhibit features contemporary Judaic pieces, and the fifth serves as the Holocaust Memorial Gallery. The museum is unofficially known as the "Jade Museum" due to its extensive collection of jade sculptures.

Recent visitors have called the Belz Museum a "hidden gem" in Memphis, noting that the impressive collection of Asian art rivals exhibits in China itself. They said that the mixture of Judaic and Asian art is unusual but spectacular, and that the Holocaust Memorial Gallery left them speechless. Many travelers said this museum is not to be missed and that it was more than worth the cost of entry. However, some museumgoers did note that this is probably not the best thing to do with young children, as they may become bored and the Holocaust exhibit can be heavy.

New 'Memphis' box set highlights Elvis' hometown recordings, from Sun to Jungle Room

memphis tour from nashville

Despite a long recording career that saw him cut at top studios in New York, Nashville and Hollywood, Elvis Presley’s most uniquely powerful work was captured in his hometown of Memphis. In August, RCA Records and Legacy Recordings will celebrate that body of work with a new Elvis box set titled “Memphis.”

The five-CD set — which will also be released digitally and in a pared down two-LP vinyl package — marks the first “fully comprehensive collection” of the recordings Presley made in the Bluff City. It will be released Aug. 9 and is available for pre-order now .

Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Presley’s first sessions at Sun Records in 1954 , "Memphis" includes 111 tracks spanning his recordings in the city, with 88 of those tracks newly remixed by local Grammy-winning engineer/producer Matt Ross-Spang at his Crosstown studio, Southern Grooves . The deluxe package also features liner notes from fellow Grammy winner and Memphis author/essayist Robert Gordon .

Produced by noted Elvis archivist Ernst Jørgensen, the box set chronicles Presley’s 1954 and 1955 sessions at Sun, his comeback at American Sound studios in 1969, the music he made at Stax Records in 1973, live recordings from a 1974 show at the Mid-South Coliseum , and a final set of songs cut in the Jungle Room of his Graceland home in 1976, a year before his passing.

Aside from the iconic Sun recordings, all the tracks on "Memphis" were newly mixed by Ross-Spang, removing overdubbed strings, horns and additional backing vocals. As Jørgensen notes, this “provides a unique ‘fly-on-the-wall’ glimpse of what it sounded like to Elvis, while he was recording all these songs with the band.” A version of “Polk Salad Annie,” from the 1974 Mid-South Coliseum show , has been released, offering the first preview of the set.

As the announcement of the project notes, these new intimate mixes offer a variety of musical revelations, “from Elvis' intuitive chemistry with “The Memphis Boys” at American (particularly notable on “Long Black Limousine”), to the subtle way he builds his vocal phrasing around his backing singers in the Stax sessions, or the palpable joy he brings to the innuendo-filled lyrics of “Way Down” in the Jungle Room.”

In his new essay for the package, Gordon writes: “With these recordings on Memphis, we are standing next to Elvis inside the recording studio, us and the basic band, hearing what he’s hearing. The strings haven’t been booked, horns are not yet on stand-by, the background vocalists are at home watching TV. What we hear is the foundation onto which the hits were built, the basic tracks that were in the studio with Elvis. And nothing more. We’re hearing a beautifully mixed version of what Elvis was hearing in his headphones when he was singing.”

The “Memphis” set will be celebrated as part of Elvis Week 2024 later this summer, with a pair of events in and around Graceland. On Aug. 13, the Graceland Soundstage will host an “Elvis: Back in Memphis” concert blending live performances with storytelling from the musicians and vocalists who were part of these legendary recording sessions. Confirmed participants include American Sound drummer Gene Chrisman and vocalist Donna Rhodes, and Larry Strickland from the Jungle Room sessions.

On Aug. 14, Sony will host a special “Memphis" listening party and Q&A at The Guest House at Graceland’s theater. Full details and guest lineup for the event have yet to be announced, but Ross-Spang and Gordon are expected to be a part of the event. Free tickets can be reserved at Graceland.com .

A Memphis to Nashville yard sale? What to know about two-decade Highway 70 Tennessee tradition

memphis tour from nashville

It's the most wonderful time of the year — for thrift shoppers and deal hunters. A more than two-decade tradition, the Highway 70 yard sale will dot the road between Nashville and Memphis with antique collections and flea markets between June 6-8.

Interested sellers are not required to register, but businesses are not allowed. They can, however, promote special sales at their stores if it's "in keeping with the atmosphere," according to the official sale Facebook page.

"This is our 21st year and we continue this with only two or three (organizers) from year to year," organizer Barbra Pomeroy said. "I think that's pretty impressive."

Participants are also not required to set up shop for all three days. The event isn't associated with any municipality, so all communication is run through the public Facebook page .

Here's what to know about the cross-state yard sale:

When is the sale?

The sale takes place June 6-8. Pomeroy said vendors set up at their own schedule. Some even set up a few days early and stay a few days after the official event ends, she said.

Where is Highway 70?

U.S. Route 70 is a major highway that runs east to west from Globe, Ariz. to Atlantic, N.C. through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee. In Tennessee, it runs between the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge in Memphis and the North Carolina state line in eastern Cocke County.

Brownsville, Jackson, Huntingdon, New Johnsonville, Waverly and Dickson are all stops along the way between Memphis and Nashville, where shoppers will find vendors.

Are all sales on Highway 70?

Venders are not required to set up shop on the highway, but they're advised to stay "not too far off the path" for best buyer traffic.

Olympics

At the Olympics, a murky question: Will the Seine be clean enough to swim in?

Follow our Olympics coverage in the lead-up to the Paris Games.

PARIS — It’s been quite the spring in Paris, with the city set to host the Olympic Games for the first time in 100 years.

Temporary stadiums are rising at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, in the plaza next to the Orangerie (home of the Monet murals), in the gardens of Versailles. Most people though will never see what may be the most important Olympic facility, the $1.5 billion underground tunnel and water tank that is supposed to make the Seine, the river that flows through the heart of the city, suitable for the triathlon and the marathon swim races and beyond.

Yes, you read that right — swimming in the Seine. The river that makes hearts melt, the site of countless marriage proposals, where for years, couples would “lock their love” by writing their names on a padlock, attaching it to the Pont des Arts and tossing the key into the water. It is also the river that only those who crave a baptism by murk, sewage, fecal refuse and various other detritus would think of heading for a dip, which has been illegal for roughly a century.

The organizers of the Paris Games tried this out with some test events last year, including a triathlon. Kirsten Kasper, a longtime triathlete who will make her Olympic debut in Paris, was there. She remembers standing on the starting dock, “looking up at the Eiffel Tower, and just smiling.”

The “looking up” part probably had something to do with that.

Olympic triathlon test in the Seine

As for the smile, that jibes with what Lambis Konstantinidis, the director of planning and coordination for the Paris Games, heard when he asked athletes about their time in the river.

“There was not one that did not say it was not a unique experience,” he said.

That is one way to describe it.

Whether any of the Olympians and Paralympians preparing to compete in the Seine get the chance to swim in the river remains an open question. It turns out that a $1.5 billion water tank intended to catch sewage during rainstorms that would normally flow into the river — plus years of forcing houseboats, ships and factories to stop polluting the river — can only do so much.

Officials inaugurated the Austerlitz water basin, which is located underneath the Austerlitz train station on the river’s Left Bank in the southeast quadrant of the city, in early May. It can hold 13.2 million gallons of water — enough to fill 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

In late May, rain fell on Paris for a week. That wreaked havoc with play at the French Open and rendered the Seine unswimmable because the rain overwhelmed the tank and tunnel system, and street runoff and fecal matter flowed into the river once more.

Officials knew this could happen. They know it might happen during the Olympic Games, though late July and early August, when the Games will take place, are generally warm and dry in the French capital. They hope weather patterns hold.

World Aquatics, the world governing body for swimming, recommends that organizers of open water events consider alternative locations to manage a drop in water quality on race day. Paris officials considered their options, but ultimately decided to hope it doesn’t rain, and that the warm sun of a typical Paris summer can kill enough of the dangerous bacteria.

There is no Plan B, other than postponing races for a few days to let the yucky water flow downstream. They say they could also turn the triathlon into a duathlon, comprised only of cycling and running, but there’s no pristine lake on the city’s outskirts on standby for the 6.2-mile swim race.

“Nothing will be done to put the athletes at risk,” Konstantinidis said.

Austerlitz water basin

Whether the water will be clean enough for competition has become a quadrennial conversation for Olympic organizers who have increasingly leaned toward locating these events in scenic waters that look great on television. Racing in open water isn’t all swimming off the coast of Kona, Hawaii, at the Ironman World Championships. But the tradeoff for beautiful sights on television and competitions in the heart of the cities that host them is often water that is kind of gross.

In 2016, Rio wanted to put the swimmers off the beaches of Copacabana, which for years have been the receptacles for the city’s sewage. Five years later, Tokyo had the swimmers compete in Odaiba Marine Park in the city’s busy harbor, which also harbors plenty of the city’s sewage and runoff. Officials installed a series of screens that were supposed to catch some of the harmful bacteria from the excess flow.

Morgan Pearson, a favorite to medal in triathlon for the U.S., said the water in Tokyo was “much murkier” than what he experienced at the test event last year in Paris. He skipped a practice swim in the river because he figured getting more familiar with the current wasn’t worth the risk of possibly getting sick.

“I’ve been in cleaner water in my life,” Pearson said of the Seine, “but there wasn’t anything that stuck out.”

Indeed, bacteria rarely does.

Like all organizers of major open water competitions, the people in charge of the Paris Games will comply with the World Aquatics standards for safe swimming set by the World Health Organization for the levels of bacteria most closely associated with sewage contamination — E. coli and enterococci.

Seine River

That requires a classification of “good water quality” which, for those microbiology majors out there, means less than 500 “colony-forming units” of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water and less than 200 units of enterococci. A colony-forming unit is a collection of cells. The Seine will also have to pass an eye test for murkiness and floating debris. The tests are supposed to take place several days ahead of the competitions and at multiple locations along the course.

Taylor Spivey, another member of the American triathlon team, grew up lifeguarding on the beaches of southern California near Los Angeles. She knew from an early age that swimming after a rainstorm was a bad idea. She has not forgotten it. She swam in the Seine last year during the test event.

“No one got sick,” she said with a smile.

The prayer of all Olympic organizers is that the Games leave a legacy and change their cities. For the French, making sure the competitors in the Olympics and Paralympics are not the last ones to swim in the Seine is a major part of that.

There are canals in the city that already allow limited swimming. The city plans to open three swimming areas along the river in 2025, assuming the Austerlitz water basin can do its job and the city’s residents are ready to take this very specific leap of faith.

“Parisians are getting used to the idea” of swimming in the urban waterways Konstantinidis said, “but they will need to see it.”
