Note that the Visitor Record is only valid as long as you stay inside Canada. If you leave and plan to re-enter, you will need a new visitor visa.

How to Apply for a Visitor Record?

You can apply for a Visitor Record either online or through a paper application.

Online Application

  • Prepare electronic documents : Scan all required documents to create electronic copies.
  • Submit the application : Follow the online application instructions on the IRCC website.
  • Pay the fee : You will need a valid credit/debit card to pay the application fees.

Paper Application

  • Download the application package : This can be found on the IRCC website and includes all forms and guidelines.
  • Complete and print the forms : Fill out the required forms, sign them, and attach all necessary documents and payment receipts.
  • Mail your application : Send the completed application package to the address specified in the guidelines.

Required Forms and Documents for a Visitor Record

  • Application form (IMM 5708) : For changing conditions or extending your stay in Canada.
  • Authority to release information (IMM 5476) : If you are using a representative.
  • Proof of financial means : Bank statements or other evidence.
  • Photocopies of passport pages : Including the name, birth date, passport number, and the stamp of your most recent entry into Canada.
  • Additional documents : Such as marriage certificates if applicable.

It’s noteworthy that applying online is faster and more convenient. You can submit documents directly and promptly via the online platform, avoiding mailing fees and processing delays.

Applying for a Canadian Visitor Visa involves several steps and requires careful preparation of documents. Understanding the eligibility criteria and the application process can increase your chances of securing the visa and enjoying your time in Canada smoothly. Remember, while you can enjoy your stay, there are restrictions such as not being able to work or study. If you plan to stay longer, a timely application for a visa extension is crucial to avoid any legal complications.

For more information and detailed guidelines, it is recommended to frequently check the official IRCC website for the latest updates and requirements.

In essence, it allows you to travel to and around Canada for a limited period, typically up to 6 months. What is the Difference Between a Tourist Visa and an eTA?

When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the distinction between a Tourist Visa and an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). These two entry permits serve different purposes and apply to different travelers.

Tourist Visas are typically required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt or eligible for an eTA.

eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

An eTA, on the other hand, is an electronic entry requirement designed for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. It's a simpler and faster way to gain entry clearance than a full-fledged visa. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's crucial to note that the eTA is only applicable if you're flying to Canada; if you're arriving by land or sea, you won't need an eTA.

It caters to the needs of the global business community, offering a streamlined process for those contributing to Canada’s economic landscape through their professional activities and collaborations.

Canada Visitor Visa Requirements

Meeting the requirements for a Canada visitor visa is a critical step in the application process. To be eligible, applicants need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Possess a Valid Travel Document : A current passport is essential, serving as proof of your identity and citizenship.
  • Maintain Good Health : Applicants should be in good health, and you may need to undergo a medical examination in some cases.
  • Clear Background Checks : It’s important to have a clean legal record, with no immigration or criminal violations.
  • Demonstrate Strong Ties to Your Home Country : You must show evidence of significant connections to your home country, such as employment, property ownership, financial assets, or family relationships, to assure the immigration officer of your intention to return after your visit.
  • Intent to Leave After Visit : Evidence or assurances that you plan on leaving Canada at the end of your authorized stay is crucial. This can be in the form of a return ticket, a detailed travel itinerary, or other documents that show your intent to return home.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Applying for a Canadian visitor visa involves several steps:

  • Determine the type of visa required : Choose the visa that aligns with your visit’s purpose.
  • Complete the application form : Fill out the required forms for your visa type.
  • Gather necessary documents : Compile the documents listed in the Canada visitor visa checklist .
  • Pay the visa fee : Fees vary depending on the visa type and must be paid online.
  • Submit your application : This can be done online or at a Visa Application Center (VAC).

Documents Required for Canada Visitor Visa

A successful application is based on providing the correct documents. These typically include:

  • A valid passport.
  • Proof of financial support during your stay.
  • Letters of invitation from friends or family if you’re visiting someone.
  • Travel itinerary if you’ve planned your trip.
  • Employment or business documents to prove you’ll return to your home country.

Application Fees and Processing Time

Application fees and processing times for a Canada visitor visa can vary depending on the type of visa you’re applying for, making it essential to seek guidance from professional immigration consultants for the most current information.

  • Application Fees : Fees for a Visitor Visa Canada can change due to updates in immigration policies or processing requirements. Immigration consultants offer valuable assistance in providing you with the latest information on all application fees. They ensure you understand the total cost of your application, including any additional charges that might be relevant to your case.
  • Processing Times : The time it takes to process a visitor visa to Canada depends on several factors, including the applicant’s country of origin and the overall volume of applications received. Immigration consultants have access to the most recent processing timeframes and can offer you an accurate estimate of how long your visa application might take.

Tips for a Successful Application

The application process, while straightforward, demands attention to detail and thorough preparation to increase your chances of approval. Here are some detailed tips for assembling a successful application:

  • Review the Canada Visitor Visa Checklist : Before submitting your application, take the time to methodically go through the Canada visitor visa checklist . This list is your roadmap to gathering all the necessary documents required for your visa application. Missing just one document can lead to delays or even a denial of your application. Ensure that every item on the list has been accounted for and is up to date.
  • Provide Clear and Concise Information : When filling out your application, clarity and brevity are your best friends. Avoid unnecessary jargon and keep your responses focused and to the point. Each answer should directly address the question, providing relevant information that supports your visa request. Remember, immigration officers review countless applications; a clear and well-structured application can stand out positively.
  • Honesty and Transparency Are Key : The foundation of your visa application should be honesty. Any attempt to conceal or misrepresent facts can have serious consequences, including the denial of your visa or future applications. Be transparent about your travel intentions, financial status, and any other requested information. If there are complex or sensitive aspects of your application, such as previous visa rejections or gaps in employment, address them openly and provide a clear explanation.
  • Supporting Documentation : Beyond the basic requirements, consider including additional documents that strengthen your application. Letters of invitation from friends or family in Canada, detailed travel itineraries, and proof of ties to your home country as mentioned above—such as employment details, property ownership, or family commitments—can significantly help your case. These documents provide a clearer picture of your intentions and assure the visa officers of your commitment to return home after your visit.
  • Review and Revise : Before submitting your application, review it multiple times to catch any errors or omissions. If possible, have a trusted friend or family member go over it as well, as they might catch mistakes you’ve overlooked. Pay particular attention to dates, spelling of names, and the accuracy of contact information. A single mistake can raise questions about the credibility of your entire application.

Apply for a Canadian Tourist Visa in 2024

A Canada Visitor Visa is an official document that is affixed to your passport and is granted by a Canadian Visa Office. It demonstrates that you have met all the requirements for temporary residency in the country (either as a tourist, a student, or a worker). It is formally known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) .

It's no surprise that everyone is excited about Canada. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the country's unending beauty. It has everything you might want, from huge stretches of beautiful green countryside to majestic seas to friendly people and thriving cities. It provides a tranquil and pleasant atmosphere that everyone desires.

Since Canada does not allow Indians to travel without a visa, you will be required to apply for a Canada visit visa , which has a 6-month validity period. This visa allows travelers to travel freely and peacefully across the country. You can apply for this visa for a variety of reasons, including exploring Canada or being a dependent or family of someone who already lives in Canada.

Top reasons to visit Canada

Canada tourist visa processing time:

Canadian Tourist Visa Updates:

COVID-19 related updates:

If you are traveling by air, you must fulfill all airline rules and pass a health check before being allowed to board your aircraft. Individuals exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be denied entry into Canada by air. Before you depart the port of entry in Canada (POE), the authorities will examine your health status.

When you arrive in Canada, you must have a plan in place for a 14-day quarantine. It is required, even if you do not have any symptoms. You should avoid traveling to Canada if you don't have a strategy. Only individuals who offer critical services, such as truck drivers who cross the border regularly to keep products flowing, are exempted from quarantine rules.

Other travel-related updates:

Applicants may continue to apply for visitor visas, also known as temporary resident visas (TRVs), both online and offline. Individuals who are currently eligible to travel will have their applications prioritized based on current travel limitations. You can also use the arrive app, created by the Canadian government, to receive frequent updates and mandatory travel information.

Emami Litigation - Notice to Class Members

The Secretary of State, following consultations with the Department of Homeland Security, has determined that the following categories of interview waivers are in the national interest.  Changes based on that determination are implemented by consular officers, who now have the authority and discretion to waive the in-person interview for:

  • First time H-2 visa applicants (temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers); and
  • Were previously issued a nonimmigrant visa in any classification, unless the only prior issued visa was a B visa; and
  • Are applying within 48 months of their most recent nonimmigrant visa’s expiration date.

In all cases, applicants must meet certain legal requirements to qualify for an interview waiver.  Implementation of this authority begins January 1, 2024, and will be reviewed annually.  This authority is in place until further notice.

As a reminder, applicants renewing a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification within 48 months of the prior visa’s expiration date continue to be eligible for interview waiver until further notice.

To be eligible for an interview waiver, applicants must also meet certain criteria, including that they:

  • apply in their country of nationality or residence.
  • have never been refused a visa (unless such refusal was overcome or waived).
  • have no apparent or potential ineligibility.

Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis or because of local conditions.  We encourage applicants to check embassy and consulate websites for more detailed information about visa application requirements and procedures, and to learn more about the embassy’s operating status and services.

Visa Waiver Program

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) , administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in consultation with the State Department, permits citizens of 41 countries to travel to the United States for business or tourism for stays of up to 90 days without a visa. In return, those 41 countries must permit U.S. citizens and nationals to travel to their countries for a similar length of time without a visa for business or tourism purposes.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

ESTA is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Authorization via ESTA does not determine whether a traveler is admissible to the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine admissibility upon travelers’ arrival. The ESTA application collects biographic information and answers to VWP eligibility questions. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, though it is recommended that travelers apply as soon as they begin preparing travel plans or prior to purchasing airline tickets.
