GetYourGuide’s ultimate McLaren Technology Centre experience

When it comes to prestigious motorsport locations, precious few are more recognisable than the McLaren Technology Centre and its iconic boulevard, home to some of the most successful cars in Formula 1 history.

Access to the space-age, ahead-of-its-time McLaren Technology Centre that first opened in 2003 is usually reserved for the privileged few. But the doors to the MTC and 60 years of McLaren’s history are now open – thanks to leading travel experience platform GetYourGuide .

The tour, which marks GetYourGuide’s expansion into sports-related experiences, includes return transportation by bus from London, exclusive access to the MTC and all the behind-the-scenes insight that entails, plus an expert guide when on site.

Tours to the home of one of the most successful teams in F1 history – McLaren is among the elite club Red Bull joined last weekend by winning its 100th grand prix – accommodate around 20 people, with your guide on hand to greet you at the state-of-the-art MTC and welcome you into the McLaren family.

And the splendour starts with the drive past the lake against which the MTC is set with the famous boulevard immediately in view upon arrival as you step through the MTC’s sliding doors, where cars driven by the likes of McLaren legends Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen, to the team’s most recent F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, plus current 2023 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are all on display – as well as cars from other disciplines that play such an important role in McLaren’s rich history, plus some of the luxury sportscars developed on-site by the McLaren Automotive brand.

The stories behind those iconic cars and the groundbreaking innovations so many of them included are part of the passage through the boulevard and around the rest of the MTC, which also includes a chance to drink in its vast trophy cabinet and take an unprecedented look at the top-secret assembly line where its cars are produced as well as a tour of its mission control room, where car performance is monitored by McLaren engineers on race days.

And that’s all while soaking up stories of McLaren’s illustrious F1 history, getting the chance to see authentic racing memorabilia – including the overalls and racing kits worn by the team over the years – finding out just what it takes to build an F1 car and much more.

Can you advise dates for next year…my husband is 60 and would be his dream.

I think 450 pound is a bit too much if the whole country wants to visit. You cannot do this kind of joke in the crisis. 200 pound looks still more but still okay. You need to reduce the price in more than half. Dont be greedy mclaren. I cant afford a penny now and am a huge fan. Dissapointed 😞

Please can I have dates for 2024. My partner turns 60 in April & would love this

Good Morning:

My Name is Glen McLaren-Villeneuve.

I’m 71 and have followed McLaren Racing since Bruce McLaren and Denis Hume raced in the Can-Am series in Canada at Mosport.

I have travelled to Montreal , Barcelona and Monaco to watch F1.

I was wondering if there is any chance of a visit to the factory or any place.

My wife and I are in the UK from November 3 to 9 , 2023.

She is fascinated by Sir Cliff Richard and we were fortunate to get tickets in London.

So it is just a dream.

Thanks so much.

Inside McLaren’s heritage center — and the history of its ‘Triple Crown’ livery

McLaren's current F1 car in its Triple Crown livery

McLaren’s newly-unveiled ‘Triple Crown’ Formula One livery that will debut at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix marks the team’s latest celebration of its 60th anniversary.

The design combines the liveries used for three of McLaren’s most significant victories — together forming the ‘Triple Crown of Motorsport’ —  and ties together almost half a century of history. The papaya orange rear is a nod to Johnny Rutherford’s Indianapolis 500 winner from 1974. The middle takes the white from Alain Prost’s car that won the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix. And featuring at the front is the black of the McLaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.

The design has three stars around the halo, one for each of the famed races, as well as the numbers for the corresponding years. The numbers for current F1 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also follow a retro design. The drivers will also sport updated race suit designs this weekend.

MCL60 Triple Crown livery Overhead view

This celebration of McLaren’s history across multiple forms of racing will be used both in Monaco and next weekend in Spain, while each of the three historic liveries feature on McLaren’s cars at this Sunday’s Indy 500.

The “Triple Crown of Motorsport” may be an unofficial accolade, but it arguably is the greatest sign of a racing all-rounder. Only one driver has won Monaco, Le Mans and Indy: Graham Hill completed the feat with a Le Mans win in 1972. And McLaren is the only team to have won all three races. (Mercedes has too, but as a manufacturer.)

But McLaren’s is a history that reaches far beyond numbers in a record book. It’s had eras of F1 domination and titles courtesy of Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton. It dominated the American racing scene in the early 70s, first in Can-Am and then at the Indy 500. It may no longer be the F1 powerhouse it once was, but its recent (and current) struggles don’t diminish its previous accomplishments.

Earlier this month, The Athletic paid a visit to McLaren’s heritage department, not far from its factory in Woking, to get up close with some of its most legendary cars and meet the team tasked with caring for them.

“It’s important that we keep the cars alive,” said McLaren chief operating officer Piers Thynne. “Not only as running assets, but as an important part of our history.”

A living, breathing workshop

McLaren Heritage may be home to half a century’s worth of priceless cars, but this is not a museum. It’s a functioning car workshop.

A team of eight people work here full-time, restoring old cars that are either part of the in-house collection or owned by private collectors. On the day we visit, a customer’s 2006 McLaren F1 road car is being worked on. Other cars up on stands include Fittipaldi’s 1974 world championship-winning M23, which Fittipaldi himself has recently driven, and the McLaren MP4/4 that won 15 of 16 races in 1988 between Senna and Prost.

an overview of cars being worked on at McLaren's Heritage Center

McLaren’s former CEO and owner Ron Dennis, renowned for his attention to detail, never wanted to throw anything away. It means the heritage department is heavily stocked well beyond the physical cars. There is at least one part of every single car from the “Ron era,” spanning 1980 to 2017. A space on one of the shelves is taken up by the tires Hamilton used to make his last-lap, last-corner pass to win his maiden world championship in 2008, the rubber still chewed from those nervy final stages at Interlagos.

Each of the “Triple Crown” winners has been fully restored in time for McLaren to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. Rutherford’s 1974 Indy 500 winner, the McLaren M16C/D, returned to the team in 2018 but required over a year of work to return to a functioning state. The Le Mans winner had barely been touched since 1995, only completing a couple of demonstration runs.

McLaren has compiled a full record of every item at its heritage base, and now has a process in place at the end of each season to build the outgoing car into a rolling state — ie without an engine — and keep the needed spare parts. It means when the time comes to run the car again, the team knows where everything is in order to make that happen.

A people business

Restoring such old cars is no easy task, and using technology and people from the period is key.

Old laptops that were brand new when the cars were state-of-the-art lay around the office, the screens in the middle of the gray bricks lighting up with invaluable lines of green code. When parts are missing, McLaren can delve into its old drawings of the design, kept in hundreds of tubes.

As impressive as the cars may have been, it was the people working on McLaren Heritage that really left a lasting impression from the visit. They may be a small team, but their experience is incredible. In many cases, the Heritage staff are restoring and maintaining cars they worked on when they were racing.

“The depth of the individuals that work in there, their experiences and also their technical knowledge, is just a fantastic,” said Thynne. “It’s a hugely important part of our business to keep alive.”

Lewis Hamilton's championship winning car sitting at McLaren's Heritage Center

Their knowledge is priceless. Some of the drawings were missing for the M16C/D that won at Indianapolis, but McLaren was able to turn to one of its heritage consultants to fill in the gaps. Hughie Absalom worked on the car when it won at Indianapolis 49 years ago. He was able to assist in the restoration using his memory and pictures of the car, and admitted it was an emotional moment to see it complete and able to run again.

Absalom is not the only member of McLaren’s heritage team to be involved in restoring cars he once worked on. Gary Wheeler became friends with Ayrton Senna in unlikely fashion, covering for the Brazilian during his time at Lotus when he found him hiding from marketing events. When Senna joined McLaren in 1988, the senior management asked Wheeler: “So, what makes you so special? Ayrton asked for you on his car.” Wheeler would work as Senna’s rear-end mechanic through all six of his seasons at McLaren.

“They were magic days,” said Wheeler.

Into the modern day

McLaren is F1’s second most successful team, trailing only Ferrari for championships and race wins. But the team has not won a title since Hamilton’s maiden triumph in 2008, meaning many newer fans — particularly those coming to F1 through “Drive to Survive” — may be less aware of its past glory.

The team started its year of celebrations by breaking the naming sequence of its F1 car, calling the 2023 model the MCL60 instead of the MCL37. Although it is not the first time McLaren has run a one-off livery — it used a retro design in Monaco two years ago for a sponsor — this is the first to symbolize its history.

tubes holding historic car drawings at McLaren's Heritage Center

“Newer fans might know our papaya era, and they may know our chrome era,” Thynne said. “But beyond that, they may have not been around. It’s important that we go back through all the eras of the team and share that.”

McLaren also wants the heritage department to act as a source of inspiration and motivation to those writing the next chapters of its history. The staff members are very much part of the F1 team, lending their expertise and helping mentor younger colleagues. By the end of this year, the plan is for the most iconic cars to return to the main headquarters, the McLaren Technology Center, after some time away due to the factory’s redevelopment work. The Triple Crown winners will take pride of place on the main entry boulevard at the MTC.

“It’s really, really important that we have those showcase vehicles around us to always remind everybody that we have a long history,” said Thynne. “Any inspiration that we might need beyond what we do on a day-to-day basis, you can see it on your way to lunch or when you go and get a cup of tea.”
