Discover One of the New Seven Wonders of the World

There’s a reason that Machu Picchu is high on every round up of bucket list destinations. Visiting the Lost City is like stepping into another world. The awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site is perched on a mountain ridge some 2,400m above sea level and commands jaw-dropping views over the surrounding landscapes.

The city itself is a testament to the skill and ambition of Incan civilisation with its incredibly well preserved structures telling the tale of lives lived in centuries gone by. Machu Picchu is one of the most archeologically important sites in  Peru  and perhaps the world.

Machu Picchu is situated to the north west of  Cusco  and can be reached in a number of different ways. Visitor numbers are limited to help ensure the preservation of the citadel, so with smart planning you’ll have an incredible, uncrowded experience.

For true luxury, travel by train from Cusco or the  Sacred Valley  on services like the  Vistadome and the Hiram Bingham . If you’re after a more active approach then hiking the Inca Trail will take you on an adventure through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country before finally arriving at your destination.

As well as an in-depth private tour, we recommend that you take some time to explore the ruins by yourself – you could even climb Huayna Picchu for an alternative view. Your Jacada travel designer will help you decide on the best option for your trip and make sure that you have the Machu Picchu experience you’ve been dreaming of.

By far one of the most detail specific itineraries we have ever followed. Lily and Berni were outstanding and followed through every step of the way. We could not be more pleased!

This is our third experience with Jacada so we will skip a lot of the preamble for the prior review. We obviously love this company to the point where we have visited three continents with them across three vacations. Any time I plan an international trip, they are my go-to. For our Peru trip, we wanted to have another great…

Jacada organized a completely custom made 17-day tour for our family of 4 to Ecuador and Peru, including the Galapagos and Machu Pichu. They really listened to our preferences and every details of the trip was well planned, super fun, and exceeded our expectations most of the time. Would highly recommend Jacada. We will definitely book with them again.

both pre-travel and during-travel support was great; communication avenues were always clear and provided. the local guides and drivers were fantastic. the hiking, views and accommodations on the lodge to lodge portion could not be beat.

Everything was wonderful. We really appreciated the thoughtful touches and surprises along the way.

Trip Details

Travel info, packing list, additional options, inca trail 4 days |day 1: cusco – km 82 – ayapata.

Your Machu Picchu hiking tours begin the night before when there will be a briefing with your trekking tour guide, at 6:30 p.m. at your hotel. We can arrange this for a different time if needed. In the morning to begin your 4 day inca trail hike we will pick you up from your hotel with our private transportation (time depending on your location). You will take a stunning drive to the trailhead KM 82, and see a great view of the Andes along the way. Your chef will prepare breakfast at the trailhead and display your passport to the checkpoint. Finally, you will start the first two and a half hours of the hike. It will be pretty flat until you arrive at the Inca site of Llactapata. You will have the first taste of Incan culture, and learn about the history of Peru. After your first Inca lesson, it will be another hour and a half until we arrive at the lunch stop. After lunch, we will have some time to rest and then continue for another two and a half hours until we reach our first camp at Ayapata.

Walking Distance : 14 km Camp Site Elevation : 3,300 meters

Inca Trail 4 days | Day 2: Ayapata – Dead Women’s Pass – Pacaymayo – Chaquicocha

You will be woken up with a hot cup of coca tea at 4:45 a.m, followed by a nutritious breakfast. At 6:15 a.m., we will begin hiking towards the highest point of the Inca Trail, Dead Women’s Pass (4,215 meters). It will be a four-hour climb, through different microclimates, with amazing views of the mountains. It is difficult trekking at this elevation, so there will be a lot of breaks along the way. Once you reach the summit, your porters will be waiting with a hot glass of tea, and you will have some time to enjoy it. You will then hike for another hour and a half downhill through Inca steps until you arrive at your lunch spot. After lunch, you will have another four hours, including breaks until you will reach your campsite at Chaquicocha. There you will get to visit two Inca sites, Runku Raccay and Sayacmarka. You will finish the day with dinner at the campsite.

Walking Distance : 16 km Campsite Elevation : 3,600 meters

Inca Trail 4 days | Day 3: Chaquiccoha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

You will be woken up with a hot cup of tea, followed by breakfast. Following, you will begin your two-hour hike to the last pass of Phuyupatamarca, which is at 3,680 mm. This section has unique views of the Vilcabamba mountain range and Salkantay mountain. On the three hour continuation to our campsite, we will visit two Inca sites, Phuyupatamarca (Village above Clouds) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). Along the way, you will discover different types of plants, flowers, and birds in the forest. After lunch, you may take the five-minute walk to the most beautiful Inca site of the trail, Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). This place is full of impressive buildings and terraces. Around 5:30 p.m., you will go back to the campsite for your last happy hour and dinner. Then a small ceremony, to say thank you, and goodbye to your amazing “green machine” porters. If you choose, you may leave a gift to say thank you. You may find more information on that under the tab  Included .

Walking Distance : 10 km Camp Elevation : 2,600 meters

Inca Trail 4 days | Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Return to Cusco

Breakfast will be at 4 a.m., and then we will head to the checkpoint. Walking this one-hour section to Sun Gate is exciting because you will see Machu Picchu for the first time. After taking some photos, it will be one more hour to the actual ruins.

Once finished, you will walk to the checkpoint of Machu Picchu, here is possible store your bag if you so choose. Your guide will lead you around the Machu Picchu complex for two hours, teaching you about this marvelous place. Following the end of the tour, you will have time to continue on your own, or if you have previously arranged to hike Huayna Picchu, you will begin then. Around 1:30 p.m. you will depart from Machu Picchu, and take the bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch, on your own. Your train out of Aguas Calientes will be at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., depending on availability. You will return to Ollantaytambo or Poroy station, and we will transfer you back to your hotel around 7 or 8 p.m.

Walking Distance : 5 km Machu Picchu Elevation : 2,400 meters

  • Professional Guides:  All of our guides studied English and tourism at Cusco National University. They grew up in the Cusco region, and have a passion for teaching others about their heritage. They are fun yet professional and will ensure you are safe and happy.
  • Permits : As soon as we receive your details and a deposit, we will purchase your permits (pending availability, check our Inca Trail Availability link). These permits are for a specific date and in your name. They can’t be changed, once confirmed. Only your passport number is allowed to be updated. The permit includes an entrance to Machu Picchu.
  • Briefing : The night before your Machu Picchu hike, you will come to our office for your briefing. You will receive your duffel bag that will stay with your porters, while you hike. This bag should not exceed 7kg/14 lbs and does need to include your sleeping bag and air mattress.
  • Porters : We include a personal porter, who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag. There is no additional fee for this. You will not have access to your duffel bag until your evening campsite.
  • Transportation : All of your transportation will be included in this trek. You will be picked up directly from your hotel around 4 a.m. (unless you are staying in Ollantaytambo) and brought to KM 82 to begin your trek. The Expedition Class Train back from Aguas Calientes is included but can be upgraded to the Vistadome Train for $75 per person. Once you arrive at the train station, you will be brought back to your hotel in Cusco. Also, included is your round-trip bus ticket from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.
  • Equipment : Alpaca Expeditions has the best equipment. We use Eureka Timberline 4 tents that are shared by only two people. You will have a spacious dining tent to enjoy your meals in.
  • Food : The Alpaca Expeditions chefs cook delicious meals that many previous trekkers have loved. We honor all food restrictions, so be sure to add any that you have on your booking form and let your guide know at your briefing. Food is typically all served family-style.
  • You will enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day for the trek along with a happy hour of tea and snacks. A snack will be provided each morning for you to enjoy along the hike. Your last meal with your chef will be after breakfast on day four. Lunch the last day is not included.
  • Water : Beginning from your first lunch until your last breakfast, Alpaca Expeditions will supply all the water needed. This water is boiled, filtered, and then cooled before distributing. You must bring your own water bottles and or camelback. We recommend carrying about 3L worth. You will be able to refill your water at each meal.
  • First Aid:  Every Alpaca Expeditions guide has received training in first aid from a physician. We conduct mandatory training sessions every February, which every single Alpaca tour guide must attend. Your tour guide will always have a first-aid kit for basic medical situations (traveler´s diarrhea, cuts, scrapes, etc.) and oxygen. We will get you off the trail as quickly and comfortably as possible if needed, and ensure you get directly to a clinic for treatment.
  • Extras : We believe it´s the attention to small details that separates us from other tour companies. Every trekker receives a small pillow to sleep with, a foam mattress for insulation, a day pack cover to protect their things while hiking, and a rain poncho. We will work hard to create your best vacation.
  • Satellite Phones:  Our top priority will always be the safety of our clients and our team. While all our guides are prepared and trained to deal with most issues clients have on the mountain. Being a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured that they are safe. Radios, which all our guides have, are limited in how far they can reach, so Alpaca Expeditions has added Satellite Phones to every trek. Every guide will have a fully charged phone that can be used anywhere on the mountain to connect us anywhere in the world. And they can be used by our clients for non-emergencies as well. While they are not cheap to use, they are available just in case you need to check in on the puppy you left at home with grandma.

Not Included

  • Rentals : Every trekker needs a sleeping bag when camping. Inflatable air mattresses and walking sticks (with rubber tips) are optional but encouraged. If you don’t want to bring any of the above, they are all available for rent:

Getting to Cusco

The airport in Cusco currently is only for domestic flights, so all international travelers by plane must disembark in Lima and go through Customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is the same day by the same airline carrier, you must grab your bags in Lima and then check them back in.

The best way to get to Cusco is by air, and there are several options in airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive but has the most options and flights. Expect delays or flight cancellations. Due to the high altitude of Cusco, it tends to be difficult to land, and any acclimate weather will stop air traffic. Bus travel is always available, and while the trip can be long, especially from Lima, the buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is strongly encouraged if coming from a city closer to Cusco, like Puno. Lima buses will take about 20 hours to arrive.

Luggage Storage

Any extra luggage you have with you can be left safely in Cusco at either your hotel or with us at the Alpaca Expeditions while you trek. We will store your luggage on the morning of your trek and return it once you are back in Cusco. Make sure your bags have tags on them, so they are easy to locate.

As soon as people book their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco, they start wondering about altitude sickness. The air at high altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level and forces your body to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. Over several days at high altitude, your body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air. For this reason, we always recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before beginning any trek in the Andes. Cusco is a marvelous city with lots to do, so if you have more time to acclimate, you won´t be bored.

With altitude sickness, you may first feel like you have the flu or a hangover. You may have a headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing during exercise. If any of these effects become severe, please contact our office, and we will help you get to a doctor. Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend easing into activity slowly, allowing your body to adjust. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. Leaves from the Coca Plant contain alkaloids that help bring oxygen into your blood, helping your body avoid the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee, since they will cause you to urinate more often and become dehydrated. Avoid smoking. Smoking makes it more difficult for your body to get oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills. They may cause shallow breathing at night, making it more difficult for your body to absorb oxygen while you sleep.

Remember, the trek to Machu Picchu is not a race. Even those in the best shape will suffer from altitude sickness if they race to the top of the mountain too quickly. Go slow, and it will give your body time to adjust to the elevation. Your healthcare provider may prescribe medication such as Acetazolamide and Dexamethasone to help prevent altitude sickness. Start the medicine two days before you get to high altitude, and continue to take it while you are at high altitude. You must remember that this is your holiday and you do not want to stress out about the possibility of getting sick from the mountains. Do everything slowly and drink lots of water, and enjoy the coca tea. If anything does happen and you, unfortunately, get sick, let your guide know right away. Alpaca Expedition guides are trained to help you get through it.

Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Typically the dry season in Cusco is from April through October, but this does not stop rain from falling in June or the sun from coming out in December, so just be prepared. No matter what month you are doing the trek, make sure that you have rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Many people forget about gloves, but being cold and wet makes hiking very unpleasant.

Also, be ready for four seasons. Trekking in the Andes involves various microclimates, and you will need to be prepared. Layers are always essential since they are easy to adjust to different temperature changes. Be prepared with a warm packable down jacket since the evening will be cold.

Every Alpaca Expeditions guide has received training in first aid from a physician. We conduct mandatory training every February, and every single Alpaca guide attends. When guiding you, they will have with them a first aid kit for basic medical situations (traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, scrapes, etc.) and oxygen. They will take good care of you.

In case something unexpected happens, and you feel you can no longer complete the trek, they will figure out the safest and quickest way off the trail and to a clinic. You will never be left alone; you will have a member of the team escort you every step of the way until safely with a doctor. When you are feeling up to it, we will make sure that you still have the chance to visit Machu Picchu and re-connect with your group, traveling by train comfortably.

Travel Insurance

To protect your travel investment, we highly recommend the purchase of travel insurance. Getting travel insurance before you leave home is strongly encouraged and very easy. We work with a great agency in the United States, that has helped to make it easy and affordable. What an excellent way to protect yourself while you are visiting Peru.

Environmental Impact

Alpaca Expeditions uses biodegradable soap and transports all our garbage back to Cusco. Our porters are trained to look after the trail and pick up any waste from other groups as well. We also use chemical environmentally-friendly portable toilets that allow us to pack waste out. We believe in leaving no footprint behind.

Alpaca Expeditions is proud of the work we do for our community, as this is the main focus of our company. We have worked with villages directly to help supply them with the needs their families were missing. We have supported local schools by giving them computers and books. Alpaca Expeditions also sponsors a teacher at the village where most of our porters come from and ensures their children have the best opportunity for education.

We buy all our food from local farmers and markets and serve the freshest ingredients. We provide English classes for all our team: guides, porters, chefs, and drivers. We are also building a house for our porters. By giving them a safe and comfortable place to stay before and after our treks, they no longer need to sleep on the floor at a friend’s house.

And twice every year we bring our porters and their families to Machu Picchu. The men and women who work tirelessly have never visited the Lost Citadel of the Incas. So that makes this trip our favorite to-do. It is an honor to show them this place.

We are always looking to do more and for partners. Please let us know about your ideas, and we will work to help.

Personal Porter Included

All of our camping treks include porters, who are responsible for carrying and setting up all equipment. They will also carry the duffel bag you receive at your briefing the night before your trek. Each duffel bag can not exceed 7kg/14lbs and must include your sleeping bag and air mat.

What do we do for our porters?

Alpaca Expeditions would not be where we are today without these hardworking men and women. We could not imagine a harder job and our team does it smiling. We do our best to thank them for their hard work and loyalty by doing as much as we can to make their lives and their families lives better. All our porters receive all their equipment for free from warm winter hats to proper hiking boots. They sleep in proper tents and are given warm sleeping bags for night. They enjoy the same food we serve our clients and all leftovers are donated to their families. We visit their villages with doctors and dentists, donate school supplies and sports equipment. And our favorite time of the year is when we bring a group of porters and their families to Machu Picchu to visit the ruins for the first time.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Machu Picchu Tours & Treks

Clouds rising above the mountains behind. the ruins of Machu Picchu, in Peru

As the mist lifts off the mountains and over the Inca ruins, Machu Picchu evokes an otherworldly feeling

It’s one of the world’s most incredible archaeological sites, with a breathtaking location to match. With all that Machu Picchu has to offer, it’s easy to understand why so many are drawn to the visitor heartland of Peru . The ultimate decision is how to get there. Choose a trek or take the train? You could hike through cloud forests along the classic Inca Trail, fulfill your Andes experience on the Quarry Trail or challenge yourself on the Choquequirao trek – it's up to you. We don’t need to tell you why the adventure is worth your while. Our local leaders will keep you safe, informed and inspired every step of the way.

Our Machu Picchu trips

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Machu Picchu highlights

Which route is right for you.

With its spectacular natural scenery and profound cultural encounters, the Inca Trail is an international beacon for trekking. Attracting thousands of hikers each year, it's a challenging yet rewarding hike that stays with you for a lifetime. Although rated moderate, the relentless uphill (and downhill) hiking is tough - the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

For an impressive hike off the beaten path, consider the Inca Quarry Trail. This lesser-known trek offers the same magical scenery of the Andes mountains, passing through local villages and visiting three smaller archaeological sites the other trails don’t. Another bonus is that the hike doesn’t require a permit – so once you book, you’re set.

Take your boots further with a challenging eight-day hike moving through high-altitude cloud forests, over mega mountain passes and along an ancient trail leading to the well-preserved Inca city ruins of Choquequirao. This trail might be secluded and not for the faint-hearted but it's also one adventure you'll never forget, and that's a promise.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

What is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is a magnificent reminder of the power and ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

The ancient citadel, built in the 15th century, was abandoned only 100 years later, and many mysteries remain.

Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 and announced as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu makes a lasting impression.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

  • Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)

  • Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

Learn more about taking the train to Machu Picchu

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July.

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep.

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of traveling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavor to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

If you plan to trek before visiting Machu Picchu, read our detailed packing instructions in your Essential Trip Information.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

What does the Rainforest Alliance tick of approval mean?

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It is working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes and thriving communities.

The green frog seal shows that an enterprise has been audited to meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

The Rainforest Alliance recognizes Intrepid as one of Peru's top certified tourism businesses.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your level of disability, fitness and what support will be available to you.

People who are visually impaired have completed the Inca Trail (with the right support crew, of course).

Contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and we can assess it from there.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Luxury Inca Trail FAQs

Why is inca trail so expensive.

The Inca Trail is priced higher compared to other treks due to several factors that contribute to its overall cost.

Preservation and Conservation, Limited Access, Infrastructure and Facilities, Expert Guides and Support, and Logistics and Permits are some of the key factors that influence the pricing of the Inca Trail.

We understand that the cost may seem higher, but it is important to remember that the Inca Trail offers a unique and unforgettable experience. From breathtaking landscapes to ancient ruins, this journey to Machu Picchu is truly extraordinary.

Should you have any further questions or need assistance in planning your Inca Trail adventure, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to help you create a remarkable and rewarding travel experience.

Which Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is best?

When it comes to choosing the best Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it ultimately depends on your preferences, fitness level, and available time. There are a few different options to consider:

Classic Inca Trail: This is the most popular and iconic route, offering stunning landscapes and a chance to explore ancient Inca ruins along the way. It typically takes about 4 days to complete and requires advance booking due to limited permits.

Short Inca Trail: If you have limited time or prefer a shorter trek, the Short Inca Trail is a great alternative. This route takes 2 days and is less physically demanding while still offering beautiful scenery and a glimpse of Machu Picchu.

Salkantay Trek: For those seeking a more challenging and diverse experience, the Salkantay Trek is an excellent choice. It takes you through varied landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, lush jungles, and remote villages, before reaching Machu Picchu.

Lares Trek: If you're interested in immersing yourself in Andean culture and interacting with local communities, the Lares Trek is a fantastic option. This trail combines trekking with cultural experiences, allowing you to learn about traditional Andean life.

Each Inca Trail option has its own unique highlights and challenges. It's important to consider factors such as trek duration, difficulty level, scenery, and cultural experiences when deciding which one is best for you. Consulting with a reputable tour operator or travel agency can also help you make an informed decision based on your preferences and needs.

Why do they call it dead woman's pass?

Dead Woman's Pass, also known as Warmiwañusca, is a mountain pass along the Inca Trail in Peru . It acquired its name due to its shape, which resembles a reclining woman when viewed from a distance. The name "Dead Woman's Pass" originates from the Spanish translation of this shape.

The pass is the highest point on the Inca Trail, reaching an elevation of approximately 4,215 meters (13,828 feet). It is a challenging and steep ascent that requires significant physical effort to cross. Hikers often experience a sense of accomplishment and relief upon reaching the pass, which contributes to the lore and significance of the name.

While the name may sound morbid, it is important to note that it is a descriptive term based on the pass's appearance and not derived from any historical event or folklore involving a deceased woman. The name is primarily used by tourists and hikers to identify and reference this notable landmark along the Inca Trail.

How hard is the 4 day Inca Trail?

The 4-day Inca Trail is considered a moderately challenging trek. It involves hiking for approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) through varied terrain, including steep ascents and descents, uneven stone steps, and narrow mountain paths. The highest point of the trek is the Dead Woman's Pass, reaching an elevation of around 4,215 meters (13,828 feet).

The difficulty of the trail is primarily due to its duration and the physical demands it places on hikers. It requires a good level of fitness and endurance to complete the daily distances and cope with the altitude. Acclimatization to the high altitude is essential to prevent altitude sickness and ensure a more comfortable experience.

It's important to note that the Inca Trail is regulated, and the number of permits is limited each day. This helps preserve the trail and ensures a more enjoyable experience for trekkers. It is recommended to book the trek in advance and prepare physically by engaging in regular exercise and hiking activities.

Overall, while the 4-day Inca Trail presents challenges, it is a rewarding and unforgettable experience for those who are prepared and up for the adventure.

What is the hardest part of the Inca Trail?

The hardest part of the Inca Trail for many trekkers is typically the ascent to the highest point of the trail, known as Dead Woman's Pass (Warmiwañusca). This section involves a steep and strenuous climb, with a significant elevation gain over a relatively short distance. The pass sits at an altitude of approximately 4,215 meters (13,828 feet), which can make the ascent even more challenging due to the reduced oxygen levels at high altitude.

The climb to Dead Woman's Pass is physically demanding and tests the endurance and stamina of trekkers. The trail consists of uneven stone steps and steep inclines, requiring a steady pace and mental determination to reach the summit. The altitude can also contribute to fatigue and shortness of breath, adding to the difficulty of this section.

However, it's important to note that the Inca Trail is a multi-day trek, and each day presents its own challenges and highlights. Other sections, such as steep descents or long stretches of hiking, may also be physically demanding for some trekkers. The difficulty experienced can vary depending on individual fitness levels, acclimatization to the altitude, and overall trekking experience.

Despite its challenges, completing the Inca Trail is an immensely rewarding achievement, and many trekkers find that the sense of accomplishment and the breathtaking views make the effort worthwhile. Proper preparation, including physical training, acclimatization, and a positive mindset, can help trekkers tackle the hardest parts of the trail and have an enjoyable experience.

Can you get altitude sickness on the Inca Trail?

Yes, it is possible to experience altitude sickness on the Inca Trail. The trail reaches high elevations, and some trekkers may not be accustomed to the thin air and reduced oxygen levels at such heights. Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when the body is unable to adjust quickly to the altitude.

Symptoms of altitude sickness can vary but often include headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. It's important to recognize and address these symptoms promptly to prevent the condition from worsening. Mild cases of altitude sickness can typically be managed by resting, staying hydrated, and allowing the body time to acclimatize.

To minimize the risk of altitude sickness on the Inca Trail, it is recommended to take the time to acclimatize before starting the trek. Spending a few days in Cusco or other high-altitude areas in Peru can help the body adjust gradually. It's also essential to stay well-hydrated, eat nutritious meals, and avoid excessive physical exertion. Trekkers should listen to their bodies, take breaks as needed, and inform their guide or fellow trekkers if they experience severe or worsening symptoms.

It's worth noting that the Inca Trail itinerary includes gradual ascents and rest days, which allows for better acclimatization. Trekking with an experienced guide who is knowledgeable about altitude sickness and its prevention is highly recommended. They can provide guidance, monitor the group's well-being, and offer assistance if any issues arise.

If symptoms of altitude sickness become severe or persistent, it may be necessary to descend to lower elevations and seek medical attention. It's crucial to prioritize health and safety while undertaking high-altitude treks like the Inca Trail.

Can a 70 year old hike the Inca Trail?

While age itself is not a determining factor for hiking the Inca Trail, it is essential to consider an individual's overall health, fitness level, and ability to handle the physical demands of the trek. The Inca Trail is a challenging multi-day hike that involves steep ascents and descents, high altitude, and long walking distances.

It is recommended that anyone considering the Inca Trail, regardless of age, undergo a thorough medical check-up to ensure they are in good health and capable of handling the physical exertion. Consulting with a healthcare professional experienced in high-altitude trekking is also advisable.

Many older adults have successfully completed the Inca Trail, but it's important to be realistic about one's physical abilities and make appropriate preparations. Regular exercise and training before the trek, including cardiovascular workouts, strength training, and hiking practice, can help improve stamina and reduce the risk of injuries.

Choosing an itinerary with a longer duration, such as the 5-day Inca Trail, allows for more gradual pacing and additional rest days, which can be beneficial for older individuals. It's also advisable to travel with a reputable tour operator that specializes in Inca Trail treks and has experience accommodating older hikers.

Ultimately, the decision to hike the Inca Trail at the age of 70 or any age should be based on individual capabilities, health considerations, and the advice of medical professionals.

Can a beginner hike the Inca Trail?

While the Inca Trail is considered a challenging trek, it is possible for beginners to hike it with proper preparation and a realistic understanding of the trail's demands. Here are a few considerations for beginners:

1. Physical Fitness: It's important to assess your current physical fitness level and consult with a healthcare professional before attempting the Inca Trail. Engaging in regular exercise and gradually increasing your endurance through activities like hiking, walking, and cardiovascular exercises can help prepare your body for the demands of the trail.

2. Training: Building up your hiking endurance is essential. Start with shorter hikes in your local area and gradually increase the distance and difficulty over time. This will help condition your body and build the necessary stamina for the multi-day trek.

3. Altitude Acclimatization: The Inca Trail reaches high altitudes, and altitude sickness can be a concern. It's recommended to spend a few days in Cusco or other high-altitude areas before starting the trek to allow your body to acclimatize. Stay hydrated, avoid overexertion, and listen to your body's signals if you experience symptoms of altitude sickness.

4. Guided Tour: Consider joining a guided tour with experienced guides who are familiar with the Inca Trail. They can provide valuable guidance, support, and assistance throughout the journey, ensuring your safety and helping you navigate the trail.

5. Packing and Preparation: Research and invest in proper hiking gear and equipment, including a sturdy backpack, comfortable hiking shoes, appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions, and other essentials like a good-quality sleeping bag and trekking poles. Make sure to pack essentials such as sunscreen, insect repellent, a first aid kit, and sufficient water and snacks.

Strength Training: You will need to build up your leg muscles to handle the steep inclines and declines on the Inca trail. Exercises such as lunges, squats, calf raises, and step-ups can help build the necessary strength.

Core Workouts: A strong core can help you maintain balance and stability on the trail. Incorporate exercises such as planks, sit-ups, and Russian twists into your workout routine.

Practice Hiking: The best way to prepare for hiking is to go for practice hikes. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the distance and difficulty level.

How to acclimatize and get used to the altitude before the Luxury Inca trail to Machu Picchu

Acclimatization to high altitude is important before embarking on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu .

Here are some tips to help you acclimate and get used to the altitude:

Arrive in Cusco at least two days before the start of the Inca Trail: This will give your body time to adjust to the altitude. Cusco is at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level, which is much higher than most people are used to. Take it easy for the first few days, and avoid strenuous activity.

Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential when acclimatizing to high altitudes. Drink at least 3-4 liters of water per day.

Avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine: These substances can exacerbate the symptoms of altitude sickness and make it harder for your body to adjust.

Take it slow: When hiking or walking, take it slow and take frequent breaks. Don't push yourself too hard, and listen to your body. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and rest.

Consider taking altitude sickness medication: Talk to your doctor about medication to prevent or treat altitude sickness. Acetazolamide (Diamox) is a common medication prescribed for altitude sickness.

Eat light meals: Eating light meals that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat can help reduce symptoms of altitude sickness.

Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is important for acclimatizing to high altitudes. Make sure you get a good night's sleep before starting the Inca Trail.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of acclimatizing to the altitude before starting the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Remember, altitude sickness can be serious, so pay attention to your body and seek medical attention if you experience severe symptoms.

Discover the Best Months to Embark on the Luxury Inca Trail Adventure

As a seasoned Peru travel advisor, I understand the significance of choosing the ideal time to embark on the iconic Inca Trail trek. The mesmerizing journey to the legendary Machu Picchu can be profoundly influenced by the weather, crowd levels, and overall experience. Let's delve into the best months to visit the Inca Trail, ensuring you make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

1. April to October: The Peak Season

Pleasant Weather: During the dry season from April to October, the weather is relatively mild and dry, providing optimal trekking conditions with clear skies and comfortable temperatures during the day. Less Rainfall: Rainfall is infrequent during these months, minimizing the chances of encountering slippery trails and muddy paths. Lush Scenery: After the rainy season, the landscapes are lush and vibrant, making the trek even more picturesque and enjoyable. Considerations:

Crowd Levels: As the peak tourist season, the Inca Trail can get quite crowded , especially from June to August. Advanced booking is essential to secure permits and ensure availability. Limited Availability: Due to high demand, it may be challenging to find available spots for the trek and accommodations.

2. November to March: The Off-Peak Season

Quieter Trails: With fewer tourists during the off-peak season, November to March offers a more serene and tranquil trekking experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Andean landscapes. Mild Climate: Although it's the rainy season, temperatures remain relatively mild, making the trek manageable and refreshing. Cultural Immersion: November to March coincides with local festivals and events, providing a unique opportunity to witness authentic Peruvian traditions along the way. Considerations:

Rainfall: The rainy season brings occasional showers and higher chances of encountering wet and muddy paths, so appropriate gear is crucial. Machu Picchu Views: The cloud cover can obstruct some views of Machu Picchu, but the fog and mist can add an ethereal touch to the experience.

3. Ideal Months: May and September

Shoulder Seasons: May and September are considered shoulder months, offering a balance between good weather, manageable crowd levels, and availability. Clear Skies: Both months often experience clear skies, granting excellent visibility and breathtaking vistas throughout the trek. Considerations:

Early Booking: Despite being shoulder months, May and September still attract a significant number of trekkers, so early booking is recommended. Conclusion

Ultimately, the best time to visit the Inca Trail depends on your preferences and priorities. If you seek pleasant weather and a bustling atmosphere, the peak season from April to October is the ideal choice. For a more serene experience with the possibility of occasional rain, the off-peak season from November to March can offer a peaceful adventure.

For a perfect balance of favorable weather and manageable crowds, May and September stand out as the ideal months to undertake this remarkable journey. Whether you decide to tread the ancient paths during peak or off-peak, the Inca Trail promises an unforgettable encounter with history, culture, and nature like no other.

There are many local tour guides in Machu Picchu. However, most of them work with the clock; they will complete the 2 hours guide service and finish the tour; some might even take shortcuts as they have another tour waiting.

TreXperience tour guides are experts in Machu Picchu, Inca Trail, Cusco, and other Peru regions. You have a better experience with our knowledgeable tour guides. The best part of our tour guides is that they will travel from Cusco or Cusco to Ollantaytambo to provide you with the service. They enter with you to Machu Picchu and exit with you; they're not in a hurry as they only have one service.

What are the benefits of using a private guide service?

Here are some of the benefits of exploring Machu Picchu with a private guide:

  • A private guide will give you undivided attention.
  • Tailor the tour to your specific interests.
  • Provide insights you would not get from a group tour or reading about the site.
  • Ensure you see all the highlights of Machu Picchu and help you avoid any crowds or lines.
  • Offers flexible tour times to fit your schedule.
  • If needed, a private guide can provide transportation and accommodation to and from Machu Picchu.
  • Can help you plan your trip so that you make the most of your time in Peru.

How to choose the right private guide service?

Remember a few things when selecting a private guide service for your Machu Picchu trip.

  • It is better to book with a travel company; we hire highly qualified, responsible tour guides.
  • Consider the size of your group. You might need a second tour guide if you have a large group.
  • Advise the travel company if you travel with children or special needs

What to expect from a private guide service at Machu Picchu?

You can expect a highly personalized and informative experience with a private tour guide in Machu Picchu.

  • Your tour guide will meet you at the hotel or Train station and company you to the main entrance of Machu Picchu.
  • They will explain the history of Machu Picchu, the Incas, flora, and fauna of the area.
  • They can also answer questions about the Inca history and culture.
  • He will also manage your time in case you have extra hikes or trains to catch
  • With a private guide, you can explore at your own pace and ensure that you don't miss anything important.

How to make the most of your private guide service experience?

Remember a few things when choosing a private guide service for your Machu Picchu trip.

  • Make sure you plan your times accordingly to have enough time for everything.
  • Wear proper clothing, comfortable shoes, light jackets, sun protection, and rain gear.
  • Advise the tour guide if you have any specific interests or topics to learn.
  • Ask as many questions as you want.
  • Tips are not mandatory but highly appreciated.

Do you offer any other tours in addition to Machu Picchu?

Yes, we also offer tours of the Sacred Valley, city tours, Rainbow Mountain, and any other tour in Cusco. These tours can be customized to your interests and needs. Please contact us for more information.

Inca Trail FAQ’s

What is the shortest hike to machu picchu.

The Short Inca Trail. It is an adventure that includes part of the archeological treasures in the Classic Inca Trail along with the landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The hikers will beat this challenge in two days and you only hike half of the first day. That being mentioned, it is highly recommended for beginner hikers or for families with children and elders, as the difficulty level of the trek is moderate.

How hard is the 2-day Inca Trail?

It is considerably less difficult than the Classic Inca Trail. Hikers will ascend from 2200 m. to 2750 m. (rather than the 5000 m. in the 4-day trail). The trail is moderate so it requires somewhat good physical condition to finish the hike. However, with the proper training before the trip, correct hydration and the assistance of your tour guide, everybody will easily enjoy the Short Inca Trail.

How steep is the Inca Trail?

There are portions of the track that do not require much effort to go by, however, stone stairs are usually one of the steepest parts of the trail. It is highly recommended to bring a walking pole to reduce the effect of the hike on your knees, so as the steeper steps do not cause any injury. The Short Inca Trail also has steep stairs but they are fewer than the Classic Inca Trail.

How long is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The Classic Inca Trail is 37 kilometers or 22.9 miles long. Marathons are 42 kilometers long but this trail is not a competition. You have 4 amazing days to enjoy the natural and historical treasures of the Incas throughout the 37 kilometers of hike. In terms of time, you will hike 6.5 hours daily on average, but you are always free to stop so you can take a rest or enjoy the surroundings.

How long is the Inca Trail?

Adding up the daily distances, you will get 37 kilometers or 22.9 miles of length. This trail ascends and descends and sometimes you might feel that you are hiking longer than a marathon. It is okay, but better you forget numbers and let yourself delight with the outstanding natural views and ancient ruins. On average, you will hike about 6.5 hours a day and you will enjoy every second of it.

Is a permit needed for Machu Picchu?

Yes. The entrance to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is regulated by the government and you must have a permit purchased in any of the authorized sale points in Cusco (you will need your passport) or online. Remember that if you book a tour with us including Machu Picchu we will purchase your permit on time.

What to pack for luxury inca trail

When packing for the luxury Inca Trail, it is important to pack light and bring only the essentials. You will need a daypack to carry your daily essentials such as a jacket, camera, water and sunscreen. You should also bring good hiking boots as the trail can be challenging. It is recommended that you pack clothes in layers so that you can adjust your clothing according to the weather. You should also bring essential toiletries, medications and a small first aid kit. I hope this helps!

Luxury Inca Trail cost

The cost of the Luxury Inca Trail trek varies depending on the tour operator and the duration of the trek. Accordingly, prices range from $600 to $1,600 in traditional services and the luxury Inca Trail from $1,900 to $4,000 or more ( this varies according to the needs of each passenger ). The latter is a luxury trek that lasts five days and four nights (one day more than the standard four-day trek).

Best season for luxury inca trail

The best time to travel the Inca Trail is from April to October (dry season), while the months of November to March are the rainy season, which makes it difficult to access and camp. The winter season from May, June, July and August is also a good time to hike the Inca Trail because there’s no rain and the weather is the best in comparison to other seasons of the year. May and October are also good times to trek the Inca Trail as permits may sell out slightly less fast than in peak months. It’s also dry and warmer than June, July and August. I hope this helps!

Inca Trail tours review and photos from our travellers

Inca trail tours review, inca trail photos from our travellers, a new way to trek the inca trail: at a lower price., compare tours.

We now have even more great ways to discover the Inca Trail, with new lower-priced four and five day options in addition to our classic full seven day experience. Compare the trips below to find the one that’s right for you.

How to decide which one is right for you?

Time to acclimatize.

Everyone needs time to acclimatize to the altitude before hiking the Inca Trail — even if you’re a regular at the gym. If you opt for a shorter tour, you’ll need to allow time beforehand to be physically ready. On our full seven-day tour, we offer you the chance to acclimatize while being immersed among local communities by visiting two G for Good projects and checking out some ruins.

Before the trek

On our shortest tour option, the trek starts the morning of the first day. So you will need to arrive before the hike starts and book a hotel. The Inca Trail is a demanding trek, you can’t arrive the night before and expect to be properly acclimatized in time. Make sure you’ve allowed enough time to prepare yourself so you can enjoy the Trail to its fullest.

We can help with the details

Need help booking your whole trip? You can book your flights to and from Lima through us as well as any other international flights. We can also help you book a place to stay before and after the trek.

Porters: the unsung heroes of the Inca Trail.

Our porters do all they can to help you enjoy your experience to the fullest, so we hope you reach the end of the trail thinking of them as friends. G Adventures is committed to treating all of our employees, including our porters, fairly and ethically. Below, get to know some of our porters in their own words.

My uncle introduced me to G Adventures as he was working here and told me that the work here was easier as compared to other companies. The weight you have to carry makes a lot of difference. I work freelance and so I work for other companies as well. I was studying and just finishing high school and I needed money to further my education as I don’t have a mother or father. I am trying to save money now.

I’m Walter and I am 20 years old. It is my very first season with G. I used to work in the food industry in food production. I decided to be a porter because I want to save money to study tourism. I want to be a tour guide in the future. To be honest, it was very hard work at first, but I’ve grown to really enjoy it. I’ve made a lot of friends here whom I enjoy spending time with, especially when we are going back to Cusco together on the train. We enjoy telling jokes.

I am Deoneseo and I am 52. I have been working as a porter for 8 years now and I began because like everyone else, I needed money to support my family. You make more of it here than you do in your community. I chose G because we carry the right amount of weight here. That is a big part of why I continue working here. I love to see the Inka sites all the time, our heritage. I have seen some sites that I’ve never seen before, some of them so big! One of the most memorable moments that I can remember is when the travellers kindly gifted us with some gifts after we finished the trek, hiking boots, clothes.

My name is Alipio and I am 49 years old. I have been working with the company for 6 years as a porter supervisor and more than that as a porter. As a porter supervisor I work with my people in an organized way, to provide the best service to the passengers that visit us. G gives us all of the things we need to be able to work including support. My biggest challenge is organizing and leading the group to provide better services. In return we receive a good quality of life and the ability to provide for our children and educate them.

Porters Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! We’ll provide you with a large stuff sac where you can place 6kg of your personal items (including your sleeping bag and mattress). Our skilled porters will carry these bags while you hike the Inca Trail. Your other personal items will be stored safely at our hotel in Cuzco. All you need to carry is a daypack containing the things you’ll need during the day like water, camera, sunscreen, or anything else that’s over the 6kg allowance.

Our porters can each carry a maximum of 20kg. Our groups travel with electronic weights to ensure no porter is carrying more than this.

Our porters are provided with sleeping bags and foam mattresses to use while they accompany travellers along the trek. They are also provided with their own tents. In some national parks, there are dedicated sleeping shelters that porters may choose to use. G Adventures pays the necessary fees for porters to use these shelters.

Since porters usually trek much faster, and carry much more gear, they have different energy requirements and therefore eat different meals than our passengers, and sometimes at different times of day as well. G Adventures provides porters with larger meal portions, and meals that are higher in carbohydrates, in accordance with their needs.

Porters are third-party contractors, and are already well-trained and experienced trekkers. G Adventures also organizes a full-day training session every February, before trekking season opens.

Porters are an integral part of the Inca Trail experience. G Adventures provides porters with equipment to ensure a safe, comfortable hike, including a back protector, rain poncho, sun hat, proper footwear, a head lamp, and a rain jacket. Equipment is checked regularly, and we frequently solicit feedback from our porters on how to improve the backpacks they are provided for carrying gear. G Adventures provides medical insurance for our porters, and in the unlikely event that a porter falls ill or becomes injured, they are immediately removed from the tour and assisted in seeking medical attention.

Tipping is at your discretion, but is always appreciated. If you enjoyed the service you enjoyed from your guides and porters, we suggest tipping between $6-8 dollars a day.

“I am Santos. I am 21 and I have been working for G Adventures for 2 years. We are losing our native language which is Quechua because many people from local communities are moving to the bigger cities where they speak Spanish. If you hear someone speaking Quechua in a city, they are called a very bad and disrespectful word. So native Quechua speakers are less comfortable speaking it and just speak Spanish instead. I hope to keep speaking it myself to keep the language alive. I also like sharing a few words here and there with our travellers. I love being an assistant chef, to help with the groups. There is only one main chef, so I enjoy helping him and learning how to cook. I would love to be a chef one day. I wish to start by working at G and with the experience I build here, I wish to one day work in restaurants. I want our travellers to remember the service we provided them with. I hope they enjoy every Inca site to the fullest and really immerse themselves in our culture.

I’ve made a lot of friends here whom I enjoy spending time with, especially when we are going back to Cusco together on the train. We enjoy telling jokes. I’d love to help out as a waiter because you hang out with the travellers quite a lot so it would be great to pick up some English words. I feel very free doing this job. The city is a lot more different. Here on the mountains it’s silent. There are very few people in comparison. I enjoy going up and down the mountain all day with my friends, laughing and sharing stories. I wish to stay here two seasons and then begin my career as a guide in tourism, perhaps start off as an assistant guide for G Adventures. I want to be a Inka Warrior.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Inca Trail is considered a moderate hike; however, there are a lot of staircases to climb, and the altitude can also affect the body. We recommend renting a wooden walking stick as it helps with your balance and reduces stress on the knees.

That all depends on how you choose to get there, as there are four different options of trails. If you take the Inca Trail, you will trek about six to nine hours each day for the first three days and about two hours on your final approach to Machu Picchu. The Lares and Salkantay treks are only three days, but you will trek 10 hours on the second day of each. The route along Choquequirao offers the option of even more trekking, averaging 5-8 hours a day. Make sure you pack your comfortable hiking boots, because it is estimated you’ll be walking six to nine hours for each of the first three days and about two hours on the last day if you take the Inca Trail.

The trek begins at 2,800m (9,186 ft). The highest point you’ll reach on the trek is approximately 4,200m (13,780ft). You’ll also sleep at 3,600m (11,811 ft) for at least one night.

It’s impossible to predict who will be affected by the altitude as your ability to adapt can vary from person to person. (We do recommend you undertake the trek in a good state of physical fitness.) Most of our travellers have no problem, as long as they take the time to acclimatize properly. We recommend spending at least one full day in Cusco (3,249m [10,659 ft] above sea level) and drinking plenty of water.

Hiking the Inca Trail is popular all year round (except for February when it’s closed), however May to September is considered the high season. This means that permits can be sold out six to eight months in advance. However, if permits are not available, there is an option to do the Lares Trek, which still takes you to Machu Picchu.

It can get chilly due to the altitude. During the Andean winter (May – September) the temperature can drop below zero at night, and can fluctuate quickly during the day. It can be cool during the summer months too, so we suggest bringing thermal underwear and a warm sleeping bag.

The best clothing for trekking is either wool or synthetic materials in layers, as they are quick-drying and can keep heat in better. It’s best to bring a base-layer, mid-layer like a light fleece jacket, and a jacket that is windproof and waterproof. Having different layers to choose from will also prepare you for sudden changes in weather Mother Nature throws your way.

Reaching Machu Picchu depends on the campsite assigned to your group on the third night. However, many groups will reach the Sun Gate at around 6:00am. You’ll have plenty of time to soak in the ruins thanks to a two-hour guided tour and some free time to explore until noon as permitted by Machu Picchu regulations.

After you’ve taken in all the beauty of Machu Picchu, your group will travel by bus to Aguas Calientes and then catch a train back to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll take a bus back to Cusco.

Yes! We’ll provide you with a large duffel bag where you can place 6kg of your personal items (including your sleeping bag). Our skilled porters will carry these bags while you hike the Inca Trail. Your other personal items will be stored safely at your hotel or at our office in Cusco where your pre-trek briefing takes place. All you need to carry is a daypack containing the things you’ll need during the day like water, camera, sunscreen, or anything else that’s over the 6kg allowance. Sleeping bags are not provided, so we recommend bringing a compact three-season sleeping bag. You can also rent a sleeping bag in Cusco. We provide our travellers with foam mats, self-inflating mats are available for rent at the trek briefing.

As per current local Inca Trail regulations, anyone entering the trail must be wearing a mask at all times. However, if a traveller has difficulty breathing with their masks while walking at high altitude, they should discuss it with their Inka Warrior who will find appropriate solutions for all. These local regulations are subject to change.

To ensure social distancing can be maintained, the trail will run at a 50% capacity in comparison to the past. This means that a maximum of 250 people per day will be able to join the trail (500 in the past). 250 represents approximately 100 travellers and 150 porters. Our trips in Peru will remain at full capacity, however the Inca Trail portion of the trip, groups will be split if necessary to ensure no more than 8 travellers are in a group.

We use three-man tents to accommodate two people. There are a few places on the trail where permanent (but very rustic) toilet facilities exist your crew will also set up portable toilet tents for G travellers.

Our cooks prepare excellent high-quality meals that are perfect for a day of trekking. The menu usually includes: pasta, rice, chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables, oatmeal, and eggs. If you’re a vegetarian, no problem! We’re able to cater to your needs. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know when you book.

Bottled water can be purchased on day one and on the evening of day three of the trek. However, we discourage trekkers from purchasing bottles as it increases the amount of waste. Instead, we strongly recommend bringing a refillable water bottle, as boiled water will be provided with every meal.

Yes, as long as it is not a metal-tipped walking stick, as they are not permitted on the trail. You can rent a wooden walking stick from us as well along with additional equipment like sleeping bags and air mattresses.

What you need to know about Inca Trail permits.

Inca trail permits.

Yes. And we can help you get one. In 2002, Inca Trail regulations were introduced to protect the site and the surrounding ecosystem. These regulations restrict the number of annual visitors and prevent undocumented trekkers from hiking the Trail and not giving the area the appropriate respect. There are a limited number of permits available, so be sure to book soon.

You must have a permit to hike the Inca Trail and there are only a limited number of permits available. The sooner you book, the better.

G Adventures has been running trips here over 25 years and, as the world’s largest Inca Trail operator, we have an established set of protocols to best secure permits. Our Cusco-based team is on hand to book and collect your permit in person before your tour even begins.

Only tour operators like G Adventures can acquire permits. All operators are subject to thorough annual inspections by the government agencies that govern the Inca Trail.

When you book your trip with us, you’ll need to have your passport you will be travelling with ready. Please note that your permit dates will be fixed and it’s not transferable.
