Designing the World of Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’

Disney’s Jungle Cruise , which floats into theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 30, tells the heart-racing—and often hilarious—story of Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt), a doctor in botany who hires skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) to embark on a grueling journey up the Amazon River in search of a legendary tree that can cure all human ailments. Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra ( Non-Stop ,  The Shallows ) turned to French production designer Jean-Vincent Puzos ( The Lost City of Z , Amour ) to help bring this otherworldly journey through a verdant mystical jungle on a creaking old tramp steamer so dramatically to life.

Puzos designed a variety of vivid tableaux for the film—including a London set where the movie opens and closes and a remote village in the heart of the Amazon jungle—but perhaps most impressive was the sprawling jungle port town of Porto Velho. Built on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a visitor would be excused for mistaking the set for an authentic Amazonian village, circa 1916. Every structure—from the Porto Velho town set and Nilo’s (Paul Giamatti) jungle cruise operation and tavern to Skipper Frank Wolff’s steam cruiser, La Quila , and his home on the water—is a functional building not a mere movie set façade. Each building is replete with artifacts, furniture, books, trinkets—and this focus on authenticity helps give the film its naturalistic flavor.

jungle cruise disney logo

“It’s an exciting challenge when you read a script and it has a description of an arrival in a city on the Amazon River with a couple of streets, a big market, a harbor with four boats, a hotel, a restaurant, a cruise company building and our hero Frank’s skipper building workshop and pontoon,” says Puzos. “You begin to divide the space and reinvent a landscape composed by many other spaces, and bend your research in a unique direction to create a cartography where every set is directly connected to the next one. And when you find an incredible location in Hawai‘i, it’s the beginning of an adventure of a lifetime. What makes this set so special is its gigantic scale, the complexity of the landscape and the visual power of the vegetation—which gave us a rich range of shooting possibilities.”

Puzos, who says the Porto Velho set took one month to scout, two months to design and four months to build, dress and landscape, says the biggest challenges his team faced were location and weather. “First of all the location was so wild, so dense in terms of vegetation, so hard to define during the survey—full of scars, holes, cliffs covered by bushes. The access was nearly impossible. We relied on drones to scout the location. When construction got up to full speed, the weather changed, and we had rain every day, flooding the sets and slowing down the construction.”

When asked for a favorite location on the Porto Velho set, Puzos says, “Every building was my favorite! In terms of architecture, the hotel was a pleasure of complexity and simplicity, following a strong pattern of Spanish/Portuguese style of colonial architecture. In terms of design, the vertical building of Frank’s workshop, standing in the water, was an iconic shape in the middle of the location. For Frank’s steam ship, I tried to visualize the journey of a conquistador constantly rebuilding his boat with debris and pieces of other boats, and constantly rebuilding his engine. In terms of colors, Nilo’s Tavern was designed like a rusted building of metal, showing all the variations of textures and colors of a piece of metal lost in the jungle, from dark rust and almost black to golden, sunny orange. In terms of fluidity, the market was designed and built for an epic action scene. This building symbolized our design: to treat the entire location like a garden, to stay fluid in the ground plan, to mix the interiors and the exteriors, and remove some roofs to see inside.

jungle cruise disney logo

“For this set, the amount of information we wanted the audience to receive was extremely rich. It was important to define every character with a space, an idea, a building or a tool like a boat. This set helps define the story. When the audience sees the port town set, I hope they will see a tribute and an homage to a famous Disney attraction. I hope they will dream of arriving by train in the middle of the Amazon and immediately enter a world of adventures. I hope they will see a rich and charismatic city—and feel the danger of leaving it.”

For director Jaume Collet-Serra, Jungle Cruise  offered the opportunity to make the type of storyline he “loved as a kid, but had never gotten the chance to make, something like  Romancing the Stone . Visually, I wanted to make a movie with a lot of scope. That would feel like you’re on an actual journey through the Amazon. And this set really helped us bring that to life.”

The Jungle Cruise is an attraction located in Adventureland at many Disney Parks, including Disneyland , Magic Kingdom , and Tokyo Disneyland . At Hong Kong Disneyland , the attraction is named Jungle River Cruise. Disneyland Paris and Shanghai Disneyland are the only Magic Kingdom-style Disney parks without Jungle Cruise in their attraction rosters.

The attraction simulates a riverboat cruise down several major rivers of Asia , Africa and South America . Park guests board replica tramp steamers and are taken on a voyage past many different Audio-Animatronic jungle animals. The tour is led by a live Disney cast member delivering a humorous scripted narration.

Inspiration and design [ ]

Walt Disney developed the Jungle Cruise alongside Adventureland, inspired by his successful True-Life Adventures nature-film series as Adventureland was originally named, "True-Life Adventureland". Walt originally wanted the attraction to feature live-animals though for many obvious reasons this was opted out for audio-animatronics (though later recycled for Kilimanjaro Safaris ). Imagineer Harper Goff referenced the 1951 non-Disney film The African Queen frequently in his ideas; even his designs of the ride vehicles were modeled after the steamer used in the film. The project was placed on the schedule to open with the July 17, 1955 debut of Disneyland.

When plans began to develop, Bill Evans, the Imagineer responsible for landscaping Disneyland and most of Walt Disney World , faced the daunting task of foresting an entire jungle on a limited budget. Aside from importing many actual tropical plants, he made wide use of "character plants" which, while not necessarily exotic, could give the appearance of exoticism in context. In a particularly well-known trick, he uprooted local orange trees and "replanted" them upside-down, growing vines on the exposed roots. The clean water was dyed brown to prevent visitors from seeing the bottom of the “river”, which varies between three and eight feet deep.

Although Goff and Evans can be credited with the creation and initial design of the ride, Marc Davis , recognized for his work on venerable attractions, such as The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean , added his own style to the ride in later versions and Disneyland updates. The "Indian Elephant Bathing Pool" and " Trapped Safari " were among his contributions. In the 1990s, the ride received theming and aesthetics to imitate the popular Indiana Jones film-series of Lucasfilm as a means of tying into Disneyland's attraction Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye . Later, refurbishments would orient the Jungle Cruise predominately towards campy jokes (most frequently improvised by skippers decades earlier and made part of an official script) and self-referential humor.

Disneyland [ ]

The attraction was in the opening day roster of the park, and has remained open and largely unchanged in theme and story since then. Aside from alterations and maintenance changes, four completely new show scenes have been added to date. In 1995 the river channel was rerouted to make way for the queue buildings and entrance courtyard of the Indiana Jones Adventure.

While the current version and most previous instances have made use of a comedic spiel, filled with intentionally bad puns, the original intent of the ride was to provide a realistic, believable voyage through the world's jungles. The original spiel had no jokes and sounded much like the narration of a nature documentary. Starting with the Christmas season of 2013, Jungle Cruise was given a seasonal overlay called Jingle Cruise and was decorated with various Christmas decorations.

Attraction summary [ ]

The queue and station are themed as the former headquarters and boathouse of the Jungle Navigation Company , located in a British colony within the Lost Delta of India in the year 1938. The queuing area is cluttered with appropriate props, such as pinned insects, an old radio on top of a bookshelf, and a chessboard with miniature animals and decorated shotgun shells replacing the pieces. The extended queue winds upstairs, underneath an Audio-Animatronic hornbill, and then downstairs again. Big band music from the 1930s plays overhead from the Global Broadcasting Service and occasional news breaks by announcer Nigel Greenwater .

In the queue's entrance is company founder Dr. Albert Falls ' map of the, "Jungle Rivers of Adventureland", a series of supernatural rivers connecting locations across the world into the realm of, "Adventureland". Throughout the queue are references to the lost crew of the Kwango Kate consisting of skipper Felix Pechman XIII , Dr. Kon Chunosuke , Siobhan Murphy, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and Dr. Leonard Moss. Guests also pass by the office of company president Alberta Falls containing her portrait and the cage of her pet bird, Kamaka.

Once aboard the boats, guests are introduced to their skipper and they head into the jungle, allegedly never to return. The first rivers simulated are the Irrawaddy and Mekong rivers, representing tropical Southeast Asia. The boats sail through a dense rainforest, and ancient Irrawaddy temple ruins where passengers see a Bengal Tiger, giant spiders, king cobras, and crocodiles. Passing a shrines of the historic King Jayavarman VII (c.1150–1160), a bowing elephant and a metal cobra, the boats enter the Sacred Indian Elephant Bathing Pool where dozens of Indian elephants prance in the water and squirt water at the passing vessels.

The theme transitions to the rivers of Africa, and riders see a family of baboons, and a safari camp that has been overrun by gorillas . The boats careen past the dramatic waterfall, Schweitzer Falls , between two African Elephants, and large termite mounds. A tableau of the African Veldt follows, showing zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes watching a pride of lions feasting on a zebra beneath a rocky outcropping. Beyond the lion's den, an angry rhinoceros has chased the marooned crew of the Kwango Kate up a tree. Antelope and hyenas watch from nearby while hyenas wait at the bottom of the tree for their coming meal.

The skipper then pilots the boat into a large pool, containing the sunken Kwango Kate and belongings of the lost expedition. This disturbs a pod of hippos that signal their intent to attack the boat. Armed with a gun filled with blanks, the skipper fires into the air to frighten them away. The boats narrowly escape and encounter the lost Jungle Cruise boat, The Mekong Maiden being crewed by chimpanzees while chimps along the riverside play with the marooned crew's belongings. The boat also passes another pair of chimps with a magnifying glass and net observing an infestation of butterflies that they had released from their crates.

The boats pass behind Schweitzer Falls (famously referred to as "the Backside of Water") to enter the Amazon River. Skeletal animal remains and warning signs featuring pictures of dagger-toothed fish forewarn the next show scene, where the boats encounter a swarm of leaping piranha. The guests then pass a pool of water buffalo nearby a large python before finding their way to the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Lost & Found . This establishment was left in possession of Indigenous South American, " Trader Sam " who turned the lost & found into a gift-shop to sell of the belongings of guests. In Sam's absence, the shop is overrun by monkeys who snap a photo of guests while they pass by a hornbill (who originally appeared on the rafters of the ride's queue until the most recent refurbishment) and Sam's pet elephant Ellie .

The boats proceed to make their return to the boathouse but not before passing through an uncharted tributary within a Polynesian river. Along the water's edge are Jungle Navigation Company docks along the Enchanted Tiki Room and advertisements for, " The Tropical Hideaway ". A white cockatoo named Rosita appears waiting for a Jungle Cruise boat and turns to sing to and crack jokes at the guests. Finally, the boats return to the Lost Delta where guests disembark.

  • 2016 - The attraction is closed until May for refurbishment to install a new docking system.
  • 2021 - New storyline at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom announced on January 25. However, following Disneyland's reopening after being temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Disneyland version of this ride remained closed and the refurbishment was delayed until July 16, 2021. The updated version of the ride soft-opened on July 9, 2021.

Description of specific changes [ ]

The baboons at the safari camp previously sat on the African termite mounds. A total of six lions have been removed since opening day: one that growled when the African Veldt was added, two lionesses from the Veldt that were fighting over a bloody strand of zebra meat, a lion and a lioness that each had a zebra leg in their mouth, and a dead lion hanging on a spit over a fire in the native village. Also removed from the Veldt were African wild dogs laughing at the pride. The native village was originally a dense jungle filled with tikis, masks, and several more natives. Trader Sam previously wore a mask and a gorilla across the channel tried to grab his merchandise.

Starting in 2013, a holiday overlay was added themed to Christmas at both Disneyland Park and Magic Kingdom with holiday-themed jokes and decorations on the boats, and holiday music on the radio station in the queue in the aptly-named " Jingle Cruise ". This refurbishment ceased in the January of 2017 but continued to be performed at the Magic Kingdom.

In January 2021 , Disneyland and Walt Disney World both drastically changed their Jungle Cruises to remove overt racism from the attraction.

The changes included removing the headhunter tribe, the original trapped safari, the Buddhist statues, and Trader Sam. The headhunters were replaced with a scene of chimpanzees riding the Mekong Maiden, an allusion to a decommissioned Jungle Cruise boat. This attraction also explicitly featured "Adventureland" as a geographic location in-universe rather than an anachronistic combination of locales.

There are 12 vehicles, with a maximum of 9 in operation at any given time. The boats in 1955 were painted as clean, idealized replicas, but have since been given a more realistic theming reflecting the grunge and wear of actual watercraft due to the addition of Indiana Jones Adventure and its ruggedness.

Magic Kingdom [ ]

The ride is set in the year 1938 as guests enter the Amazon River Base of the colonial business, the Jungle Navigation Company . The boathouse's radio broadcasts AWOL Airwaves, the service of one Albert Awol who plays music and relays announcements. Within the boathouse are several allusions to the corruption and negligence of the Jungle Navigation Company including a board of lost boats, an escaped orangutans, crates of damaged cargo, attempts to sell a feral tiger, and the employee of the month dying of disease. Additionally is a map of the Jungle Rivers of Adventureland , a series of mystic waterways which make up the jungle realm of, "Adventureland" mapped by skipper Frank Wolff and gifted to the Falls family before being augmented by Alberta Falls for skipper usage.

Throughout the queue are references to a lost Jungle Cruise tour containing the likes of skipper Felix Pechman XIII, Dr. Kon Chunosuke, Siobhan Murphy, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and Dr. Leonard Moss. Guests proceed to board boats on docks across from the shack of the elusive O.I. Cyhu. The skipper introduces themselves and begins to take the boat full of guests down the tropical rivers of the world. The ride starts out in the Amazon River, where the passengers encounter butterflies with one-foot wingspans, or as the skipper might say, twelve inches.

The boat then passes Inspiration Falls, which transitions into the Congo River in Africa. Here, the boats happen upon an empty mercantile called Boats & Baits AND Bites! run by one, "Skipper Sully". This shop is shown to have originally been called Boats & Baits before being turned into a quick-service dining establishment selling exotic fish such as piranhas. The boats proceed to encounter a giant python before making a getaway. After this, the boat then passes a camp that has been raided by gorillas, which transitions the cruise into the Nile River. The boats also encounter a downed airplane with the words, " The Amazing Hathaway Browne " on it, referencing the vehicle's owner.

While making the transition, the boats pass by Schweitzer Falls, named for the company founder Dr. Albert Falls. After encountering two elephants, the boat passes along the African Veldt, where numerous African animals watch a pride of lions eat their kill. The boat then finds the lost crew of the Kwango Kate, referenced in the queue. They have been chased up a tree by an angered black rhino while hyenas wait at the base of the tree for a free meal. After this, the boats encounter the sinking Kwango Kate which is taken over by chimpanzees, some of whom are eating Dr. Chunosuke's rare butterflies. The group then passes by another waterfall, Schweitzer Falls, and encounters a pool of hippos. They are about to charge the boat until the skipper scares them off, either via yelling or gunshot.

They enter a temple which has been destroyed by a natural disaster. Inside the skipper is silent as they encounter, baboons, cobras, and an Indochinese tiger. After they exit, they come across an elephant bathing pool where numerous elephants are relaxing in the water. The boat narrowly avoids being sprayed by water from one of the elephants. Following this, the boat returns to the Amazon rainforest where they find the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Lost & Found . This establishment was left in possession of Indigenous South American, "Trader Sam" who turned the lost & found into a gift-shop to sell of the belongings of guests. The guests see the shop overrun by monkeys before making their return to port.

Due to being opened much later than its Disneyland counterpart, the Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise had much more involvement by Marc Davis. The plane is the back-half of the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior found at The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios in the Casablanca scene.

The character of Albert Awol was added in 1991 to the Jungle Cruise during a refurbishment:

Around the time of the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom , the skippers' guns were removed. They returned around November 2004 in the form of wired props that played gunfire sounds over the boats' PA systems.

Each variety of plant throughout the attraction was carefully selected by landscape architect Bill Evans to ensure that the foliage would be able to endure Florida's unique climate: hot summers and relatively cool winters. The most difficult aspect of this was making sure these plants had the appropriate look and feel of traditional tropical plants in the equatorial jungle. During the Christmas season of 2013, Jungle Cruise was given a seasonal overlay called Jingle Cruise and was decorated with various Christmas decorations.

In January 2021, Disneyland and Walt Disney World both drastically changed their Jungle Cruises to remove overt racism from the attraction.

The changes included removing the headhunter tribe, the pygmy camp, the previous trapped safari, and Chief Nah-Mee . This attraction also explicitly featured, "Adventureland" as a geographic location in-universe rather than an anachronistic combination of locales.

There are 15 vehicles, with a maximum of 10 in operation at any given time.

Tokyo Disneyland [ ]

The Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland attractions are very similar to each other, with the exception of a few minor differences. While the boats in the Magic Kingdom's attraction travel counter-clockwise, the boats at Tokyo Disneyland travel in a clockwise direction. The current incarnation of the attraction is known as Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions . This version includes unique effects in the temple, a full musical score, and an alternate experience for nighttime cruises.

The station and surrounding area are themed to a more upscale African city, as opposed to an isolated jungle outpost. This version shares a station building with the park's steam train ride, Western River Railroad . Within the boathouse, voices of Jungle Navigation Company personnel give instructions to guests. The spiels in Tokyo Disneyland are delivered in Japanese and skippers bow to the audience after each joke.

The story focuses on establishing a "friendship with nature", with the Skipper keeping three animal totems in their boat: The Tiger of Courage, the Elephant of Wisdom, and the Monkey of Cleverness. Using one of these three totems and calling upon their matching animal spirits, the Temple's carvings are brought to life in a celebration with man's connection with nature. The first lines from the song " Circle of Life " from The Lion King can be heard when the boat passes through the African Veldt scene. At the end of the attraction, guests encounter Chief Nah-mee (also known as "Salesman Sam") and Ellie who are trading fruit and the three medallions which the skippers have in their boats.

There are 13 vehicles, with a maximum of 12 in operation at any given time.

All boat names, except Orinoco Ida, are alliterations.

  • Kwango Kate
  • Wamba Wanda
  • Zambezi Zelda
  • Mid-1990s/Early 2000s - The blank-firing guns are replaced with wired props that play gunfire sounds when used.
  • 2008 - Chief Nah-mee (Salesman Sam) offers bananas instead of shrunken heads starting March/April.
  • 2014 - The original Jungle Cruise closes on January 6 to undergo a revamp. It reopens on September 8 as Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions. The skippers' guns and the skulls/skull imagery were removed during the revamp.

Hong Kong Disneyland [ ]

The shape of Jungle River Cruise 's route is significantly different compared to the others, and circumnavigates Tarzan's Treehouse . A grand finale is included with a battle between angry fire and water gods. Three languages are regularly available: Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Each language has a separate queue, allowing visitors to experience the journey in their preferred language.

The queue takes place in a small boathouse less elaborate than the boathouses found at the other parks. After winding through the queue, guests board one of the boats and meet their skipper who speaks either English, Cantonese, or Mandarin, to accompany the park's guests who speak many different languages themselves.

The boats then depart and head down the river, past Tarzan's Treehouse where the skipper tells guests to wave goodbye to the guests traversing the treehouse, for they will never see them again. The boats then drift past a mother Indian elephant and her calf playing in the water, followed by another elephant showering in a waterfall. A large bull Indian elephant emerges from the water squirting a plume of water at the boats with the guests narrowly avoiding the free shower.

The vessels then drift down a narrow stream past ancient Cambodian ruins which have been claimed by the jungle. Giant spiders and king cobras watch the boats as they move on. Up ahead several crocodiles are seen resting on a small beach, while a school of hungry piranha are jumping in the hopes of attacking the guests. The boats escape into Africa and they pass a large safari camp where several curious gorillas have discovered clothes, guns, hammocks, and books, as " Trashin' the Camp " plays on a nearby 1930s radio. The African Veldt comes into view where antelope, giraffes, zebras, and African elephants stare at the boats. The vessels then drift into a small pool where a pod of hippos try to tip the boat. Several feet ahead a rhino is seen chasing a safari group up a tree while several hyenas look on laughing.

Skulls and cloth impaled on broken bamboo sticks appears as tribal drums and horns fill the air. The skipper tells guests that they have entered head hunter country and must quietly sneak by. The boats slowly pass through the main village where several upright shields rest in the tall grass. A native notices the boats and all the shields now revealed to have head hunters behind them begin firing spears and poison darts at the boats as they narrowly escape into a rocky canyon. In the rocky canyon, the boats stop near two unusual rock formations that look like faces, revealed by the skipper to be the fire god and the water god who constantly feud over their differences. The fire god sets the river ablaze while the water god vomits a water bomb, causing the flames to die and the whole canyon to become a cloud of steam. The boats escape the canyon and pass a baby elephant before returning to the boathouse.

  • 2006 - Piranha Attack and Trapped Safari scenes added, enhancement of Gorilla Camp, African Veldt, and Headhunter's Territory
  • 2007 - Temporary scene added during the " Pirate Takeover " summer event (from May to August); attraction name changed to "Jungle River Cruise: Pirate Takeover!"
  • 2015 - Seasonal overlay added during Halloween event; attraction name changed to " Jungle River Cruise: Curse of the Emerald Trinity "

There are 9 vehicles, with a maximum of 8 in operation at any given time.

  • Congo Queen (Wheelchair Accessible)
  • Lijiang Lady
  • Yangzi Ying Ying

Gun signals [ ]

The Disneyland version of the attraction uses live revolvers firing blanks. They are always fired at the Hippo Pool scene, but are also used to signal to the dock in the event of an emergency. Each signal has a different meaning, and is signified by the amount of shots fired using the louder emergency blanks:

Live guns were used at the Magic Kingdom until 2001, when they were replaced with fake props and an on-board sound effect.

In popular culture [ ]

  • In the Disney's Sing-Along Songs video Disneyland Fun during "Following the Leader", Jungle Cruise made an appearance.
  • In the film Tarzan , gorillas in Tarzan's troop homage the gorillas of the jungle cruise when they hold a rifle to their eye.
  • Jungle Cruise was parodied as Timon and Pumbaa's Virtual Safari on The Lion King Special Edition.
  • A stand up comedy show featuring only Jungle Cruise Skippers, called The Skipper Stand Up Show, has been doing shows in Fullerton, California since May 2006.
  • Disney's "Fab Five" characters, cruise boat and the "River Expedition Company" boathouse were incorporated into an original painting and limited edition print offering by artist Randy Souders entitled "Jungle Cruise" created for the 1999 Official Disneyana Convention at Disneyland .
  • In Australia's Disneyland special: The Wiggles Live at Disneyland Park , Greg and Murray are on this ride thinking they're in the wrong place.
  • In the " Mickey Monkey " episode of the 2013 Mickey Mouse shorts, the "Fab five" ride a Jungle Cruise boat and accidentally abandon Mickey in the jungle. In the later episode " Wish Upon a Coin ", Goofy briefly appears dressed as Chief Nah-mee.
  • A Chibi Tiny Tales short involved the characters of the DuckTales reboot riding the attraction.
  • The ride was the subject of the Weird Al Yankovic song Skipper Dan

Television Appearances [ ]

  • A behind-the-scenes look at Jungle Cruise was featured in the Disney+ Original series Behind the Attraction .

Film adaptation [ ]

The film adaptation , originally scheduled for release in 2007, has experienced various delays and changes. The shooting of the film, originally scheduled for 2006, was cancelled. Moreover, the original screenplay by Josh Goldstein and John Norville was reportedly rewritten by Al Gough and Miles Millar. This original screenplay followed a group's riverboat journey through a jungle in search of a cure and was to have featured a contemporary setting. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were set to star as a Skipper and a frustrated passenger respectively until this version was cancelled.

A new version of the project starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt was announced in 2017, with a planned shooting time in the Spring of 2018. This version of the project is described as a comedic action-adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones and the attraction's original inspiration, The African Queen . Jack Whitehall joined the cast as "Disney's second openly gay character". [2] Said character was criticized due to being a campy gay character portrayed by a heterosexual actor who is also subject to coded jokes by Dwayne Johnson's character about his sexuality. The film was eventually released on July 30 , 2021 .

  • Jungle Cruise is one of the few original rides at Disneyland that is still open today.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom has two attractions inspired by the Jungle Cruise. One is Kilimanjaro Safaris which reuses Walt's original plans for a faux environment with real animals while the other is the alien jungle cruise of Na'vi River Journey which is an Avatar-themed reimagining of the attraction.
  • Both Kevin Costner and John Lasseter worked there as captains of the boats in Disneyland. [2]
  • In a popular story recounted by Jeff Lange, a writer for weblogging site Jim Hill Media, an experience at the Jungle Cruise helped bolster John Lasseter.
  • Disneyland Paris used to have a Jungle Cruise themed gift-shop called Trader Sam's Jungle Boutique but this was replaced with the Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost .
  • The name of the Jungle Cruise's most famous boat The Congo Queen was likely a tribute to Charlie's boat The African Queen from the film.
  • The Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise featured a container of, "Rose's Leech Salt" referencing a scene in the Jungle Cruise where Rose Sayer helped Charlie Allnut recover from leeches. Also in this queue was a map of the Congo with the words, "Follow the Route of the Jungle Queen" and highlighted route passing Ponthierville where a church was illustrated. This alluded to how the film of the African Queen was partly filmed in Ponthierville, most notably within its cathedral and by using, "The Jungle Queen" as a surrogate name for the African Queen of the film.
  • One of Chief Nah-mee's heads was allegedly made to resemble the head of Katherine Hepburn as a tribute to her character Rose Sayer.
  • In Bengal Barbecue is a (photoshopped) photograph of Charlie Allnut and Rose Sayer riding the Zambezi Miss past the original lost safari in the African veldt.
  • In Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar is a post-card sent to Trader Sam from Charlie Allnut, offering his advice and services.
  • The Jungle Cruise film takes influence from the African Queen with Frank Wolff even being modeled after Charlie Allnut.
  • The Minnie Mouse section of Magic of Disney Animation featured the poster for a film called, "The Jungle Cruise" modeled after the poster for the African Queen albeit with Mickey Mouse as Charlie Allnut and Minnie as Rose Sayer.
  • The clothes of Frank Wolff and Lily Houghton are hung up in Alberta Falls' office in Disneyland. The map of the Amazon river is framed in the boathouse and a conquistador hat seemingly references the villainous Lope de Aguirre. While difficult to see, the chimp's map aboard the Mekong Maiden is signed by, "F.W." AKA Frank Wolff from the film.
  • During the world premiere of the Jungle Cruise, one of the boats was turned into Frank's boat La Quila.
  • In the Magic Kingdom, there is an office with Frank's hat, Lope de Aguirre's helm and the map of the Amazon in Alberta's office. The map of the Rivers of Adventure is also signed, "F.W." for Frank Wolff, a major character from the film.
  • During the Jingle Cruise, a crate addressed to Rosita's owner Nilo Nemolato from the film was added to the African Veldt.

Jungle Cruise Reimagining Info & Reopening Date

jungle cruise disney logo

Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and Disneyland will receive a reimagining in 2021 with new characters, a continuous storyline, changes to show scenes, and more. This post will share timeline info & details, concept art, and commentary with our thoughts. ( Updated May 27, 2021. )

Per the Disney Parks Blog, these new adventures will stay true to the Jungle Cruise experience fans know and love. The ride reimagining will add more humor, wildlife, and skipper heart, while also reflecting and valuing the diversity of the world around us.

The new creative concept for our river’s journey will be original to Walt Disney Imagineering, just like the attraction itself. Here’s a first look at some of the new things Disney is adding to the iconic Jungle Cruise…

Imagineers are adding more humor, wildlife and skipper heart to the classic attraction, and as part of a much larger effort, this update to Jungle Cruise will welcome new characters from around the world. The new scenes will be interconnected, and be heightened by Jungle Cruise Skippers’ legendary comedic tone.

Last month, Disney released new info about what this will entail. First, the attraction will remain open at Magic Kingdom during the reimagining, as Imagineering utilizes a “phased approach” to the project. This is not a huge surprise, as this is exactly how the annual Jingle Cruise overlay is accomplished each year at Christmas.

jungle cruise disney logo

Disney has since announced that the Disneyland version of Jungle Cruise will reopen on July 16, 2021. The Magic Kingdom updates are progressing swiftly (with the Trader Sam Gift Shop scene described below now installed) and all changes will be completed this summer.

The way the attraction’s scenes are staged makes it more conducive to changes that can be accomplished overnight or in the span of a day or two. It’s likely many of the new scenes won’t be overly elaborate or substantial departures from what’s currently there, but rather one-for-one exchanges of figures and props. Most of that can be fabricated off-site, with old props removed and new ones installed overnight.

jungle cruise disney logo

Above is concept art for the replacement scene, where Trader Sam has opportunistically “reimagined” lost & found as a gift shop as a quick and easy way to make some extra cash from tourists.

In this scene, Trader Sam is betting on an established reputation as the best merchant in the jungle, and while he’s out lost and finding some new inventory, the animals are getting the last laugh and “reclaiming” the jungle. Personally, I love this scene. It’s on-brand with the Jungle Cruise humor and self-deprecating, as Disney pokes fun at its commercialism and opportunism with rides exiting into gift shops.

There also appears to be a lot to see in this scene, which is always great for re-rideability as guests will want to revisit the attraction to spot all of the gags. Also, it’s tough to argue with any scene that features five (5) monkeys. Finally, and slightly ironically, the very scene that pokes fun at Disney’s commercialism also extends it via a new on-ride photo. All wins in my book!

I’m guessing some fans might object to Trader Sam no longer being a visible character, but I like it. For one thing, the two versions of Trader Sam looked very different at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. For another, he’s also an invisible presence at the bar bearing his name, so this works as an extension of that. There’s a certain mystique about a character who has an outsized presence, but is never seen. Reasonable minds might disagree with that assessment, though.

Next, Imagineering has released a 1938 issue of The Daily Gnus about Alberta Falls and the World-Famous Jungle Cruise to tease the upcoming project. There are fun tidbits in there that reflect how Imagineering will be expanding the Jungle Cruise’s backstory. This will be centered around Alberta Falls, granddaughter of world-renowned Dr. Albert Falls, as the proprietor of the Jungle Navigation Company Ltd.

The article also introduces a number of new characters, including Victoria Marie Falls, Siobhan “Puffin” Murphy, Dr. Leonard Moss, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and S.E.A. Member Dr. Kon Chunosuke. If you’re interested in more info about these characters, check out the My Disney Experience app, which will give you detailed bios.

jungle cruise disney logo

Most notably, this establishes a direct connection to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, or S.E.A. That’s a secret society of fictional and real-life explorers that began at Tokyo DisneySea two decades ago and has grown into a shared universe of characters and story points that has spread as far as Typhoon Lagoon.

Notably, a Society of Explorers and Adventurers show was just announced for Disney+ as the first project for the Magic Kingdom Universe. Previously, an S.E.A. connection to Jungle Cruise was implied via other attractions and restaurants, but this will be the organization’s first appearance in Jungle Cruise itself (at least, to my knowledge).

jungle cruise disney logo

It’s likely there will be plenty of other plot modifications beyond the S.E.A. connection. Here’s how Kevin Lively, Imagineer and former Jungle Cruise skipper described the storyline changes: “As part of this story update, we’ll get to follow a skipper and his passengers as their journey goes awry.

That’s right, for the first time ever, the skipper role will not only be that of a live, experienced, and witty guide, but also represented by a show figure within the attraction itself. In fact, the expedition will be up a tree (literally!) after their sunken boat splits apart and chimps board the wreckage, with monkey business ensuing.”

jungle cruise disney logo

“But that’s not even half of the hull story. Fans of the Jungle Cruise attraction may recall some boats that used to make their way around the river but haven’t been seen for a while–specifically the Mekong Maiden and Kwango Kate. Ever wonder what happened to them? Well, you might go ape when you find out! Ultimately, the jungle gets the last laugh.”

The reimagined storyline will begin with a trapped safari party that finds itself up a tree after their journey goes awry. Unexpected scenarios along the way will give the jungle and animals the last laugh!

Disney has stated that more details about the enhancements will be revealed soon, and that the Jungle Cruise reimagining is coming later in 2021. Kevin Lively also shared this video:

In an interview with D23 , Imagineer Chris Beatty further clarified the nature of the Jungle Cruise update: “I want to make sure people know we are not changing the whole Jungle Cruise . This is not a re-envisioning of the entire attraction. It’s the Jungle Cruise you know and love, with the skippers still leading the way, and at the same time, we’re addressing the negative depictions of ‘natives.’ So that’s one of the scenes we’re going to go in and change.”

“And for the first time, we are actually linking scenes together…So we’re not really re-envisioning that scene, we’re just adding a narrative and storytelling to bring things to life and connect that moment with other happenings along the river.”

jungle cruise disney logo

Chris Beatty explained that Jungle Cruise would be relying and building upon the hilarious scenes added by future Disney Legend Marc Davis and skippers’ spiels: “We’re keeping a lot of the classic jokes that the fans know and love, like the backside of water. But it will give our skipper some new material to play off of.”

Additionally, the changes won’t be inspired by the upcoming film, said Beatty. “I’m excited about the movie, and having Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt be a part of that film. But these adjustments are really focused on enhancing the existing attraction storyline and addressing some areas that needed refreshing along the way. I’m sure the film is fantastic and we’re very excited about it, but integrating the film into our classic Jungle Cruise is not part of this effort.”

jungle cruise disney logo

After the backlash and fan petitions in response to last summer’s announcement that that Splash Mountain will be rethemed to the Princess and the Frog at Walt Disney World and Disneyland , the company is undoubtedly aware that any changes to an iconic attraction will be controversial, even ones done carefully and with thematic integrity.

Accordingly, Disney has provided “testimonials” about that changes from Imagineers:

jungle cruise disney logo

As with Splash Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland , it seems unlikely that Jungle Cruise will change in Japan. In part this is because Oriental Land Company–and not Disney–owns those parks, but also because that incarnation of the attraction changed a few years ago. It now has a different storyline, plus different day and night versions, unique lighting schemes, and projection mapping effects.

Hong Kong Disneyland could change eventually, although the story and show scenes there are also very different.

jungle cruise disney logo

We don’t have a ton of commentary about the Jungle Cruise story rewrites and scene changes. In fairness, we are also most definitely not Jungle Cruise purists who view it among the pantheon of all-time classics. (Honestly, we prefer the Tokyo Disneyland version–even though we can’t understand it–thanks to superior visuals and effects.)

To the contrary, our view is that Jungle Cruise is way too taste-specific and skipper-dependent. It has a cult following among longtime fans and has achieved iconic status via longevity, but doesn’t have as much mainstream appeal . While that’s obviously not the impetus for these changes, we’re cautiously optimistic about anything that makes the attraction more coherent, consistent, and enjoyable to first-timers.

jungle cruise disney logo

This appears to be part of Disney’s new focus on inclusion, but the changes also pretty clearly go well beyond that. As we’ve been saying for months now, there are a variety of updates in store for older attractions, many of which are small scale and could be accomplished overnight or with a brief closure.

No matter how much fans protest or petition, this was an inevitability for some of the scenes and script in Jungle Cruise. You might also recall the outrage to the Auction Scene Changes in Pirates of the Caribbean when that was announced a few years ago; the update happened anyway. Expect the same for other attractions in the not-too-distant future.

jungle cruise disney logo

The bigger surprise to me is not that Jungle Cruise changing, but that there’s an accompanying announcement from Disney. I thought they would’ve learned their lesson on that one–but maybe the hope here is that hardcore fans will see there’s more substance to this overhaul (and it’s not outright replacing a fan-favorite with something different entirely), and will give Disney the benefit of the doubt or take a “wait and see” approach.

My expectation was that Jungle Cruise would close with mentions of “synergy” or enhancements related to this year’s Jungle Cruise featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and the problematic aspects would quietly change along with movie tie-ins being added. It’s pretty clear from the announcement my guess widely missed the mark with the Jungle Cruise changes. As much as I love the Rock, I’m not particularly eager to see him in Audio Animatronics form, so I’m happy that isn’t happening.

Between dodging that bullet and based on what we know thus far about this Jungle Cruise reimagining, I’m perfectly willing to withhold judgment until seeing the finished product. There’s definitely promise to the ideas, and plenty of potential for Jungle Cruise to improve.

jungle cruise disney logo

The other interesting aspect of this announcement is that Imagineering indicates the changes (presumably for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World) will be added to the attraction in 2021. Given everything else, that means it’ll almost certainly be finished by October 1, 2021. That’s a fast turnaround time, and it also comes during a year when there’s no guarantee that physical distancing or barriers will be removed from boats. As it stands, the guest experience on Jungle Cruise is significantly impeded. (To the point that it’s the one attraction we avoid right now.) I’m surprised Disney would want to debut the changes with all of that still potentially in place.

Moreover, there’s still no timeline set for the Splash Mountain reimagining, and rumors that the finished project could be years away. Jungle Cruise being announced much later but being finished much earlier suggests to me that perhaps the changes aren’t as substantive as implied. Then again, the tone and appearance of Jungle Cruise can be dramatically changed in a limited amount of time–just look what happens each year literally overnight for Christmas with Jingle Cruise! We’ll keep you posted on future developments with Jungle Cruise, and other attraction updates at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

@Maggie enjoy your self-loathing, while the rest of us go on. And no, no matter what you think in any twisted acrobatic line of reasoning, the is nothing whatsoever racist about historical facts. What happened, happened. Depictions of the real world are not racist and not offensive, unless you’re embarrassed by your own past or behavior. Most people claiming offense have never been to any of these places and really don’t know what they are talking about. And no, no person can claim that if you don’t agree with them 100% even though they cannot explain what they think is racist, that then in turn you are racist. It seems that most folks don’t even know the difference between race, ethnicity, nationality, etc.

I came in here to leave a comment lamenting the fact that I’m leaving Disneyland on July 16th and won’t get to see the new attraction….

But after reading a few comments by MrNico and Tom Thompson I really can’t stay silent and be part of their statements by complicit consent. Although it takes a lot of strength to acknowledge it, it IS racist to believe that just because you aren’t bothered by a scene or because historical research was done means that it isn’t offensive. It took me a long time to understand this despite my diverse group of friends, and it is even harder for it to be absorbed if there aren’t many dissenting voices (such as in traditionally white, upper-class spaces). Now, I cannot judge anyone who posts here because all of our backgrounds are different, and I do not know where you come from or what your status is, and because judging people is wrong. But unfortunately, so are phrases like ‘I don’t see color’ and ‘we need to move past this.’ People of color do not have the luxury of moving past this, and those phrases contribute to the problem. As an alternative, what would be more appropriate to say is that you DO see color, that you acknowledge that you may come from a historically advantaged perspective, and that you will work in your life to make small differences so that others who did not will have less challenges ahead of them. You don’t need to run out and donate to a local charity group to do this (though that would be amazing). All you have to do is support positive changes like this re-imagining by enjoying the nostalgic memories you have of the ride, and feeling good that the next generation’s nostalgic memories of the ride won’t leave them embarrassed in 50 years time to have been on it.

Frank V: What is even more disappointing is that with Reimagining Tomorrow, Disney has embraced Critical Race Theory. Instead of just starting from square one, they are going back to hundreds of years ago to make more victims and make more people to blame for those victims. Just like with Coca Cola, I’m far too white for them even though I think like Martin Luther King that it shouldn’t be the color of our skin, but what’s inside us. That just makes me feel like they don’t want my money any more. We may be selling our DVC points. We’ve already given up all Coca Cola products. That makes going to WDW tough since nearly every non-alcoholic beverage they sell (other than milk) is made by Coke.

@Mickey1928, I like it! We all bleed the same red blood, after all. Let’s enjoy the parks and buy each other a beer to toast to Walter E Disney in thanks for all the joy he’s given the world.

To my fellow Disney fan Mom-o-twins First I agree totally with you about people talking about how much they spend while threatening that Disney will lose their business. Quite frankly I find it vulgar and disappointing. Where I disagree is I don’t think we need to see racism everywhere. It’s wrong to assume it’s “angry white people”. This isn’t a racist thing. I’m sure there are those of all colors who are offended and many from all colors who aren’t offended. I know people on both sides and they don’t break down by color. There are too many sides of this issue (updating rides) to do a fair and full discussion about why someone would or wouldn’t want a ride changed. But we all must take a breathe and not get caught up with this racism witch hunt the media and the politicians would have divide us so they can attain /hold wealth and power. It’s only pigmentation. They want us at each others throats at a time when we should be working together preparing for that giant asteroid with our name on it out there. We need to unite the world over so we’re ready for those visitors from another universe in case they’re not so friendly and come looking for cheap labor. Those are some of the truly serious problems ahead. Submitted with love for all my Disney friends. True Disney fans are the best people on the planet.

@Sarah_best, NO, asking someone why they are offended is the only way to understand it and empathize with them. Being condescending and insipid like you’re doing is the biggest part of the problems we are having these days. Far too many folks think they can just claim offense at anything random and be showered with gifts and special treatment. In sorry you don’t understand what the word racism means, but seems like so many don’t… But if we meet in the parks some day, I’ll be happy to buy you a Dole Whip or a churro.

jungle cruise disney logo

@MrNico No, I’m saying you’re intentionally being rude and offensive by not believing a person of color when they tell you something is racist.

@Sarah_Best that’s a long-winded way for you to say “I don’t know”. But I’m not surprised.

Disney’s Jungle Cruise will finally come out on July 30, both in theaters and on Disney Plus with Premier Access. The Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt joint was originally supposed to hit theaters last summer (after a previous delay), but COVID-19 put a halt on all things theater-related. Johnson announced the change Thursday on Instagram , post-workout in the “iron paradise.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by therock (@therock)

The adventure-comedy film is based on the Disney Parks attraction of the same name, and follows Blunt as a biologist named Lily searching for a rare tree with healing properties in the Amazon rainforest. She joins up with Johnson’s disgruntled riverboat captain Frank, and the duo trek deeper into the jungle.

Jungle Cruise joins Country Bears , The Haunted Mansion , Tomorrowland , and the entire Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in the pantheon of Disney live-action movies based on rides (some of which are much better than others ). Disney recently announced that the Jungle Cruise ride will be undergoing some major refurbishments to update negative depictions of native people in both the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions of the ride.

Jungle Cruise will follow Cruella (May 28) and Black Widow (July 9) as dual releases in movie theaters and on Disney Plus Premier Access . With the state of theaters still nebulous, this seems a safe bet to make the most profits possible. Disney Plus Premier Access costs $29.99 per movie, and is available only to active Disney Plus subscribers.

11 AAPI celebrities who are changing Hollywood

  • As AAPI Heritage Month draws to a close, these are some of the most famous AAPI celebrities today.
  • Dwayne Johnson, who is Samoan, has been the highest-earning actor in Hollywood multiple times.
  • Ali Wong, who is Vietnamese and Chinese, made history with her Emmy win.

Insider Today

May is AAPI Heritage Month . AAPI stands for Asian American and Pacific Islanders, a population that encompasses millions of people throughout the US from all over Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Pacific Islands, such as Samoa, Hawaii, and other Polynesian islands.

As AAPI Heritage Month concludes, we took a look at some of the most influential AAPI celebrities in Hollywood, including actors, directors, producers, and musicians. All have broken records and broken boundaries in terms of AAPI representation on-screen, behind the scenes, and on the radio.

Here are some of the most famous AAPI celebrities who are changing the entertainment industry.

Dwayne Johnson has been the highest-paid actor in Hollywood four separate times.

jungle cruise disney logo

As reported by Forbes , Dwayne Johnson was the highest-paid actor in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021 for his roles in films such as "Central Intelligence," "Moana," "Jumanji: The Next Level," "Hobbs & Shaw," "Jungle Cruise," and "Red Notice."

The former pro wrestler is now one of the most famous people in the world and a face of the Samoan community in mainstream entertainment.

In addition to Johnson's movie roles , he is also a producer of many of his films, and he co-created a sitcom about his life growing up in Hawaii, his time at high school in Pennsylvania, and as a college student in Miami. Fittingly, it was called "Young Rock" and aired from 2021 to 2023.

Mindy Kaling has created multiple successful shows.

jungle cruise disney logo

Mindy Kaling is one of the most influential showrunners in streaming right now. After starring on "The Office" (which she also wrote for), Kaling co-created and starred in her own sitcom, "The Mindy Project," which aired for six seasons.

Since, Kaling has somewhat stepped back from acting and is now focused on developing TV. Her Netflix series " Never Have I Ever " was a huge hit until it wrapped up in 2023. Her next hit, the Max series "The Sex Lives of College Girls," was responsible for introducing audiences to Renee Rapp , now a star in her own right.

Kaling also co-created the animated series " Velma ," which was almost universally hated … but got enough people hate-watching to greenlight a second season.

Two more shows created by Kaling are set to hit streamers soon: A comedy on Hulu called "Murray Hill" about 20-somethings in NYC and "Running Point," a Netflix comedy series starring Kate Hudson as the new president of a fictional Los Angeles NBA team.

Olivia Rodrigo is currently on a mega-successful world tour for her second album, "Guts."

jungle cruise disney logo

Rodrigo, who is just 21 years old, has been hailed as the future of pop music after her stratospheric rise in 2021 due to her debut single, "Drivers License."

Since then, Rodrigo has released two chart-topping albums, won three Grammys, was named Time's entertainer of the year, and gracefully exited the Disney+ series that gave her a platform, "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series."

She also became the first Filipino-American to be featured on the cover of US Vogue in July 2023, according to Next Shark.

Director Jon M. Chu is gearing up for the release of "Wicked" this fall.

jungle cruise disney logo

Chu is a high-profile director who has helmed multiple big-budget productions — besides the two-part "Wicked" adaptation, Chu directed Justin Bieber's concert film "Never Say Never," "In the Heights," "Now You See Me 2," and most famously, 2018's " Crazy Rich Asians ," the first modern-day major studio film featuring an Asian cast since "The Joy Luck Club" 25 years prior.

"Crazy Rich Asians" made $239 million worldwide, which is significant for a rom-com considering many consider the genre dead.

Now, he keeps fans hyped for " Wicked " this fall by posting photos from set, engaging with people online, and praising how amazing the cast is.

Steven Yeun is an Oscar nominee and an Emmy winner.

jungle cruise disney logo

It might've taken a bit for Yeun's career to rebound after his character Glenn was killed off "The Walking Dead," but it was worth the wait. Since he exited the show in 2016, his career has only skyrocketed.

Yeun was nominated for an Academy Award (best actor) in 2021 for his performance in "Minari," making him the first Asian-American actor to ever be nominated in that category.

In 2023, he starred in and executive-produced the Netflix series " Beef ." He won two Emmys, two Golden Globes, two Critics' Choice Awards, and an Independent Spirit Award for the show.

The Korean-American actor also plays the super-powered teen Mark Grayson on the critically acclaimed Prime Video series "Invincible."

Ali Wong has also won numerous awards for "Beef."

jungle cruise disney logo

Wong also won two Emmys and two Golden Globes for "Beef," making her the first Asian woman to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie.

In addition to "Beef," Wong has produced three stand-up comedy specials. In the first one, "Baby Cobra," Wong was 7 ½ months pregnant and making dirtier jokes than almost anyone else, pushing the boundaries of what stand-up comedy can be.

Wong also wrote and starred in her own rom-com, "Always Be My Maybe," and cast Keanu Reeves as her love interest, a true power move.

Priyanka Chopra is the most-followed Indian actor on Instagram.

jungle cruise disney logo

Chopra, who won Miss World in 2000, has become a powerhouse in both India and the US. In 2012, she became first Bollywood star to sign with the American talent agency CAA.

Since then, she's cultivated a massive Instagram following (91.1 million followers and counting), has become a lifestyle figure (with a hair-care line, an NYC restaurant, and a home-goods line), wrote a best-selling memoir, and is a successful actor and producer.

In 2020, Chopra signed a "a two-year multimillion-dollar first-look television deal with Amazon," Variety reported. Her first project after the deal was the 2023 spy thriller series "Citadel," with a second season already on the way.

Bowen Yang is the last true "SNL" breakout we've had in years.

jungle cruise disney logo

Yang, who joined the cast of the sketch show in 2019, is a star. The first Chinese-American comedian to ever join the show, Yang almost immediately cemented himself as an important addition to the cast. He's already been nominated for three Emmys (one for writing, two for acting).

He's also branched out into movies, appearing in "The Lost City," "Fire Island," and "Bros." Later this year, he has a supporting role in "Wicked," and is set to remake the Ang Lee rom-com "The Wedding Banquet" alongside recent Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone.

Chloé Zhao was the first woman of color to win best director at the Oscars (and the second woman ever).

jungle cruise disney logo

Zhao made history in 2021 when she won best director for her film "Nomadland." She was the second woman to ever win that award, behind Kathryn Bigelow in 2010, and the first Asian woman to owin.

Following "Nomadland," Zhao directed the MCU film "Eternals," which made a respectable $402 million at the box office, even though it wasn't a huge hit with critics or fans.

Next up for Zhao is an adaptation of the hit novel "Hamnet," starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, Deadline reported.

Auli'i Cravalho is the voice of the first Polynesian Disney princess.

jungle cruise disney logo

Cravalho made her film debut in 2016 as the voice of Moana, the first Polynesian Disney princess, a huge step forward in AAPI representation at Disney. She'll return to the role in 2024 for "Moana 2."

And though she won't play Moana in the live-action film in order to "pass the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent," as she told The Wrap , she will produce the film alongside Dwayne Johnson.

Cravalho is also a live-action star, recently appearing in the musical film adaptation of "Mean Girls" and the Hulu rom-com "Crush."

Dev Patel made his directorial debut in 2024.

jungle cruise disney logo

In addition to the internet demanding he be cast as the next James Bond, Patel is a busy guy. After starring in the runaway hit "Slumdog Millionaire," Patel has been one of the most reliable (and charming) stars in Hollywood.

He was nominated for an Oscar in 2017 for his performance in "Lion," starred in the Middle Ages epic "The Green Knight," collaborated with Wes Anderson for the Oscar-winning short film "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," and made his directorial debut with the action film "Monkey Man." He also stars in the film.
