The thirty-six showcase artists/bands for jazzahead! 2023 are announced

A varied programme – Juries hugely impressed by the overall standard – 576 applications from 45 countries – Performances from 27 to 30 April at MESSE BREMEN – Full lists and brief band descriptions with this press release.

The jury’s decisions have been made, jazzahead! 2023 at MESSE BREMEN continues to take shape – there is a definite buzz of anticipation here!

Out of no fewer than 576 applications, 32 artists and bands have been selected to perform at the world’s largest jazz trade fair from 27 to 30 April. These are in addition to the four “Commissioned Works”, collaborative bands brought into being by invitation, which were outlined in the most recent press release. As well as the “Commissioned Works” bands, there will eight other showcase concerts at the German Jazz Expo, the eight concerts of the Overseas Showcases, plus the European Showcases which consist of 16 concerts. “I believe that we have once again put together a programme which is not just really exciting but also shows huge variety,” says Sybille Kornitschky, who runs the jazzahead! trade fair.

Once again, the jury members had substantial quantities of listening to get through; there were no fewer than 576 applications from a total of 45 countries. The artistic directors of jazzahead! and the four international juries, consisting of programme directors from festivals and clubs, did not have an easy ride: every single application was considered and listened to in detail, this resulted in initial rankings and the building of shortlists. “Many more deserved to make it than those who actually did,” says Kornitschky, “the overall level was again very high – so unfortunately there are many who will be disappointed.” Seventeen countries (out of the 45 who applied) are now represented by their artists in the showcases. All the acts in the final selection, with a brief description of each, can be found at the end of this press release.

Once again, the programme shows phenomenal diversity. In fact the range is even wider than in previous years. Thus, the 36 showcase acts include everything which – alongside what is generally considered to be jazz – is related to it, whether it be folk, world music, rock or electronica.

Other remarkable aspects this year are worthy of mention: “Several large ensembles applied,” says Uli Beckerhoff, artistic director of jazzahead! together with Peter Schulze. Three of these groups made it to the shortlist in the German Jazz Expo alone – “and they are all very different from each other, right across the spectrum from free spontaneous arrangements to very precise orchestrations.”

The final programme includes an “incredible guitarist”, the Australian Josh Meader with his trio as well as the Cuban cellist and singer ANA CARLA MAZA, who is already a big YouTube star with over a million views of her very individual and distinctive music, with its fascinatingly deep and direct connections to Cuban music royalty.

The formation “Schntzl” from Belgium stand out for their originality, the Norwegian band LILJA bring some exciting rock influences, and as for the French duo “No Sax No Clar” – “they are incredibly good in the way they play together,” says Beckerhoff.

According to the artistic directors, the fact that there has been a move closer to the stylistic fringes is very much in line with the artistic directors’ priorities: a good example is the German band Conic Rose, says Beckerhoff: “Their pop and electronica mix is jazzy, and yet at the same time finely structured, very free-spirited and yet well thought-out. The more you listen, the more exciting it gets – very modern!”

It is also good that the geographical categories used for the programme modules have been freed up somewhat compared to previous years. Peter Schulze: “How do you classify a Cuban musician who lives and works in Spain, for example, or the many African musicians who live in France? Jazz simply cannot be placed within borders.”

The international jurors were pleased to have been part of this process. Raluca Baicu, Artistic Curator from North Sea Round Town, a member of the jury for the German Jazz Expo, says: “Being part of the jury was a great source of discovery – it was inspiring to hear all these applications and to discover so many high-quality projects and passionate artists from Germany.” At the same time, making the choices was also a great challenge: “It was not easy for a jury to make a short list when there are quite so many good projects, especially among the larger ensembles. That aspect was the most surprising part of the process for me personally, seeing the artistic interest and developments for larger ensembles.” (Press Release ends)

Introducing the 2023 EFG London Jazz Festival

Wednesday, November 1, 2023

This year’s EFG London Jazz Festival brings a huge range of global stars to the capital. Alyn Shipton spoke to its director Pelin Opcin to get the low down on the event’s panoramic vision of jazz today

jazz tours uk 2023

This year, after returning to its pre-pandemic size in 2022, the EFG London Jazz Festival is bigger and more ambitious than ever. Director Pelin Opcin is in upbeat mood, and when I suggest that London is one of the few festivals that can accommodate some really sizeable groups, she is quick to agree: “We’re very lucky with our partnering with contributing orchestras and big bands who are not just going to be there, but are really taking part in the artistic process. So, for example, presenting Wayne Shorter ’s symphonic music and showing how it has developed is one of the most important parts of this year’s programme. He presented some of this music himself at earlier editions of the festival with the BBC Concert Orchestra, but he was continuing to compose for large forces right up to his death, and this year the Philharmonia Orchestra, with conductor Clark Rundell, will be presenting some of this recent music. It includes the European premiere of his semi-operatic piece Iphigenia , which he was working on with Esperanza Spalding.

"He was inspired by her singing and she was writing the libretto. But as well as that body of material, there was a mass of newly-composed music in Wayne’s apartment at the time he died, and Clark Rundell realised there was enough there for another programme, including new arrangements of part of his 2013 song cycle, Gaia .

"This was originally planned to be a 90th birthday concert, but when we lost Wayne, it became an hommage to this great, visionary figure. And we’re lucky to have musicians who worked with him, including Danilo Pérez and John Patitucci from his quartet, Esperanza of course, and Terri Lyne Carrington who also has a long history with Wayne. It’ll be a very apt climax to the festival on 19 November.”

I mention the fact that other orchestras include the BBC Concert Orchestra with Miho Hazama and Rob Luft and the London Sinfonietta with Marius Neset .

“Yes, this piece Geyser is Marius’s third collaboration with the orchestra after the earlier pieces Snowmelt and Viaduct , and it’s great to have this continuing collaboration with these two orchestras, who have appeared many times before. We love working on programme ideas with them and creating new works that can become part of the festival. And I’m really glad, for example, that we can showcase Miho as a conductor as well as a composer and performer.

"I don't see these as one-shot events, but as catalysts for further ideas, so that, for example, Rob Luft, who is appearing with Miho, is also building on his work on last year’s Tomasz Stańko tribute with the BBCSO, by returning to Stańko’s music with Alice Zawadzki and Byron Wallen at Café Posk this year. And also building on that same event, we’ll see Emma Rawicz on a double bill with trumpeter Avishai Cohen after they appeared together last year. That’s a musical match made in heaven, as each of them performs their latest music with their own groups. And Emma’s also appearing this year with Gwilym Simcock , who’s really become a pillar of British jazz."

The festival isn't just about British jazz, though and I was interested to see this year’s links with the Melbourne Jazz Festival and with Jazz from Ireland.

“It’s very exciting, and it’s been very generous of our partners there to come up with these ideas, so – from Australia – we can host key figures in the Melbourne scene, including Zela Margossian and Brekky Boy . And it’s great for them to engage with the audience on a free stage where there are no barriers whatsoever.

"The same goes for the musicians from Ireland, and of course we’re also presenting the UK premiere of Christine Tobin ’s Returning Weather , which reflects on moving back to Ireland in 2020 after a time based in New York. There’s also a strong African strand in the festival and this year we’re focusing on East and North Africa, starting with the legendary Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke at the Barbican.”

ron carter

One facet of a festival as big as this, with a number of sizeable venues, is that Astatke is just one of a number of legendary names who are appearing in London, whereas some other festivals might be hard-pressed to host just one!

“Well, Charles Lloyd and Ron Carter are both incredible musicians. Charles’ appearance in 2021 was one of the great experiences of my life – just an unforgettable concert. So it’s wonderful to welcome him back with his Ocean Trio, because he is a non-stop creator! And the same is true of Ron Carter, here this time with his quartet Foursight, with Renée Rosnes.

"And I have to mention another band from the same generation, bringing their music to a young international audience here in London and that’s The Cookers, which is just packed with legendary names. I’m really pleased to have such a breadth and depth of programme this time around.”

Jbgb events.

After 10+ years of developing JBGB Events, which with your support has become a major force on the London Jazz Scene, it's time to embrace a new work plan From January 2024, I become part of the Pizza Express Live Jazz Management team, creating, and presenting concerts at their Dean Street, Holborn, and Chelsea venues. This development allows me to spend more time on building the best concerts for you, with the Pizza Express team handling the important administrative, payment, VAT, performing rights etc which with over 80 JBGB Events concerts in 2023 had become a significant burden on our limited resources. Our focus will be on developing Big Band Sunday lunches with Gareth Lockrane, Simon Spillett , Nikki Iles, NYJO, Tom Smith and so many more plus, the major artists including Claire Martin, Clare Teal, Elaine Delmar, Derek Nash, Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale et all, not overlooking our successful Christmas party Jazz Lunchtimes in December. We retain our established JBGB Events brand and hope you will continue to support our major live music plans Our successful relationships with the jazz cabaret venue Crazy Coqs will continue with several concerts In thanking you for your support over many years we hope you will find many concert in 2024 and hopefully beyond from us that you will come to and enjoy.

John Billett

"Music, as a background to something else, is no music. Performing with recorded backing tracks is no performance. Great music is always live. Listen to music in the foreground.

Brilliant music, superbly performed by outstanding musicians, and heard without distraction is a recipe for entertainment, inspiration and complete enjoyment. And the great thing about improvised music is its different every time."

"Live music is so exciting, you never know what's going to happen"

Liverpool International Jazz Festival will return for a 10th anniversary celebration in the city next year, organisers have announced.

The Capstone Theatre on Shaw Street will play host to a jazz extravaganza from 23rd to 26th February 2023 and will feature award-winning international artists spanning a range of genres from Indo-jazz to Afro-funk and classical.

Liverpool International Jazz Festival (LIJF) was established in 2013 by Liverpool Hope University, and in previous years has included performances from some of jazz music’s leading lights. The emphasis of the festival is on contemporary instrumental jazz in a variety of styles with a focus on presenting work from an international selection of world class artists, taking audience members on a musical journey that traverses numerous genres and cross-genres.

Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2023 to celebrate 10th anniversary

Kicking off the festival on the 23rd February will be a special collaboration with Milap – the UK’s leading Indian arts and culture company. With original music, new improvisations and a collective harmony and groove, the  Milap Indo Jazz Club  will bring together some of England’s top Indian and Jazz musicians in a performance curated specially for LIJF 2023.

The show will be ‘the foremost contemporary collaboration between Indian and Jazz music in England today’ and is the result of ten years of creativity between the professionals of Milap and the National Youth Jazz Collective.

On 24th February, electronic fusion trio  Devils of Moko  will take the stage at LIJF. The group consists of Dominic J Marshall on piano and synth (Dominic J Marshall Trio, The Cinematic Orchestra), Mulele Matondo on bass (Kongo Dia Ntotila) and Sam Gardner on drums (Septabeat, Samadhi Quintet). Their music is a collective melting pot that captures all of their individual styles.

With the Western musical structure of Mulele’s grooving Congolese rhythms and sonic stories, Sam’s explorations of electronic music, drum & bass and production and the soulful jazz melodies of Dominic’s piano playing, the trio’s music has an uplifting and soul busting sound.

Luxembourg trio  Dock In Absolute  (DIA) will be flying in to Liverpool on the Saturday afternoon of the festival. Composed of Jean-Philippe Koch on piano, Arne Wiegand on bass and Victor Kraus on drums, their music is built around Koch’s original compositions, fusing different styles from progressive jazz to classical and rock elements.

The group brought its first album out in 2017, under the Label CAM JAZZ with a second one following in 2019, and a third album planned for 2023. DIA has been named the “Export Artist of the Year 2017 and 2019” by music:LX and are considered the most active band in Luxembourg.  The band’s latest album has been listed in Jazzit Magazine Awards “100 Greatest Albums of the Year”.

Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2023 to celebrate 10th anniversary

Later on the Saturday, and presented by Milap, virtuoso British-Asian bass player  Shez Raja  will bring his high energy live show to the festival. Voted one of the ‘hottest bass players in the world’ by readers of Bass Player magazine, Shez Raja’s unique ‘Indojazzfunk’ sound and global star collaborations with Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Trilok Gurtu and Wayne Krantz has seen him perform at the likes of Ronnie Scott’s, the Jazz Cafe and at major international festivals.

Shez’s set will also feature  Tony Kofi  – a British jazz multi-instrumentalist born of Ghanaian parents, and a player of the alto, baritone, soprano, tenor saxophones and flute. Having cut his teeth in the ‘Jazz Warriors’ of the early 90s, Kofi has gone on to establish himself as an award-winning musician, teacher and composer of some authority.

Closing the festival on Sunday night will be Norwegian saxophonist and composer  Marius Neset , who has earned countless nominations and awards for his performances and recordings, including the Spellemannprisen in Norway, and an ECHO award in Germany. Downbeat magazine also listed him as the only European jazz musician in their list of ’25 artists to watch’ in 2017.

Marius has performed with jazz musicians all over the world  and has received composition commissions from the BBC. Marius has also worked with classical musicians such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Andreas Brantelid, Michala Petri, Ole Edvard Antonsen, Louisa Tuck, Ingrid Neset, and the Vertavo String Quartet.

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best

So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!

Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?

Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.

1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see

Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?

2. Meet new friends

It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!

3. The freedom

Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.

4 . It’s a cult

You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.

5. Confidence boost

Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.

6. Experience the music your way

Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.

So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.

Your next gig awaits

It all starts here.

Create memories to last a lifetime

Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.

Don’t miss out on the biggest announcement and keep checking back for latest news and last chance tickets.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour UK setlist and surprise song predictions

Taylor Swift in a white dress performing onstage on the Eras Tour

The Lover House is burned down, Speak Now is fighting for her life, and we’re all afraid of little old Taylor Swift as she brings the Eras Tour to the UK, with the nation preparing for her first concert tonight.

The 34-year-old’s mammoth three-and-a-half-hour set has sold out arenas in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and six shows in London, kicking off in Edinburgh on Friday night.

UK-based Swifties have really gone all out, with Capital FM releasing a radio station dedicated to the All Too Well icon.

Paris night one revealed an entirely new tour version as the Tortured Poets Department took centre stage and the entire Eras Tour was changed, from bodysuits to choreography.

Fans had already speculated there might be a switch up after she released the Eras Tour film before her tour had finished but this was more than our wildest dreams.

It’s no surprise that Taylor has added in the new album but as the Eras Tour was already incredibly long, some songs were left on the cutting room floor.

The Archer, tis the damn season, and even the last great American dynasty were all brutally ripped from the setlist.

New glittering bodysuits and dresses were rolled out for every era except Reputation, which is the last in the album in the show to get its Taylor’s Version.

So far no vault track appears on her main setlist, only core album songs have a permanent place on the Eras Tour.

Swifties have been left in utter disbelief as Folklore and Evermore were combined into one era, known as the sisters era, to keep the time down.

Speak Now was reduced back down to one song — RIP Long Live — and debut remains reserved for surprise songs in the acoustic set.

Let’s be honest Taylor could perform for six hours and fans would still want more but even she would probably find that exhausting.

After so much upheaval, let’s see what Taylor Swift’s setlist has been left looking like and what that means for the UK.

We’re still going strong opening with Lover but even her seventh studio album and big opener couldn’t survive Taylor’s great setlist war. We’ll miss you, The Archer.

  • Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince
  • Cruel Summer
  • You Need To Calm Down

Fearless Era

The album that made her a superstar remains unscathed but since there were only three songs for this era it’s hardly surprising.

However, a new tasselled bodysuit was revealed and it looks incredibly similar to one worn on the Our Song hitmaker’s original Fearless tour in 2009.

  • You Belong With Me

In a position switch up, the setlist now moved from Fearless into Red instead of Evermore but the songs remain unchanged and All Too Well remains firmly in pride of place.

  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
  • I Knew You Were Trouble
  • All Too Well (10 Minute Version)

Speak Now Era

Justice for Speak Now, already balding but now scalped as Long Live has been once more removed.

We’re begging Taylor, I will sacrifice I Knew You Were Trouble for just one more purple-painted dream.

Reputation Era

Yet to have its Taylor’s Version released, Reputation remains unchanged on the mammoth set but has been moved to after Red and Speak Now rather than before.

It’s also the only section that has not had an outfit change, the day that red and black bodysuit goes we’re all going to lose our minds.

  • …Ready For It?
  • Don’t Blame Me
  • Look What You Made Me Do

Folklore/Evermore Era

Once separate totalling 12 songs, Taylor’s lockdown albums have been combined into one – with a lot of casualties.

‘We have reunited the sister albums,’ the singer told the Paris crowd, joking it could be called ‘everlore’ or ‘folkmore’.

Removed from the setlist are: Tis the damn season, the last great American dynasty, invisible string, and tolerate it.

  • Cardigan (folklore)
  • Betty (folklore)
  • Champagne Problems (evermore)
  • August (folklore)
  • Illicit Affairs (folklore)
  • My Tears Ricochet (folklore)
  • Marjorie (evermore)
  • Willow (evermore)

Mother’s favourite child remains safe and sound with no changes and still following the Folklore set. Honestly, we would have loved to see some of this swapped out for the vault tracks which stormed the charts last year.

Bad Blood remains on the setlist, we wonder if Kendrick Lamar is free to come do a surprise live feature…

  • Blank Space
  • Shake It Off
  • Wildest Dreams

The Tortured Poets Department

Initially, Swifties weren’t sure if this would be added and if so how could the 31 tracks possibly be whittled down into just a handful?

A new era brings blessings of brand new outfits, a floating stage set piece, gunshot choreography, and of course some insane vocal moments.

Taylor has spoken and these are (probably) her favourites off TTPD.

  • But Daddy I Love Him
  • So High School
  • Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me
  • The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
  • I Can Do It with a Broken Heart

The stage she’s gliding around on during Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? IS A MIRROR!!!!! The audience can see themself in the mirror as she’s singing “You caged me and then you called me crazy. Surprise songs

Each night Taylor plays two surprise songs from her vast discography, these have included This Love and Clean from 1989 and Dear John and Last Kiss from Speak Now.

Also known as the acoustic set, Paris Night One fans were (obviously) treated to Paris from her album Midnights played on piano and loml on guitar from TTPD.

In this leg of the tour, Taylor has taken to singing some gut-wrenching mashups and announced she could sing whatever she wanted so any song is on the table.

There are some songs it’s likely she’ll reserve for London, such as London Boy and So Long, London but the rest as up for grabs.

Since the slate was wiped clean with this new leg, and Taylor’s penchant for singing You’re On Your Own Kid repeatedly, there’s no way to predict the Mastermind’s moves.

Midnights Era

Closing out the show is the iconic era which gave us ‘Karma is the guy on the chiefs ’ and that chair choreography — Midnights.

Her 2022 album gets sparkling new outfits, although the Lavender Haze fluffy lilac jacket has not been swapped out.

  • Lavender Haze
  • Midnight Rain
  • Vigilante Shit

What is the old Eras Tour setlist?

With so many changes, here’s what Taylor’s Eras Tour used to look like for a setlist run

  • tis the damn season
  • champagne problems
  • tolerate it
  • invisible string
  • the last great american dynasty
  • illicit affairs
  • my tears ricochet

When is the Eras Tour in the UK?

The Eras Tour comes to the UK from tonight , beginning in Edinburgh for three nights before heading to Liverpool, Cardiff, and London .

Who knows what Taylor will have in store for fans given her love for keeping everyone on their toes.

Given the huge overhaul, this is likely to be the setlist for the UK gigs and all her European dates but might have minor tweaks thrown in.

Of course, if you’re sad your favourite track is not on there is always a chance it could be one of the surprise songs as she has no rules around what she can and can’t sing here.

We’re hoping for Picture to Burn, Suburban Legends, The Black Dog , or Hits Different but that tells you far too much about us.

What is Paramore's Eras Tour setlist?

The iconic pop punk band Paramore will be opening for Taylor Swift at the UK gigs and they revealed their setlist in Paris.

Of course, it is much shorter but still packed with hits from the chart-topping band, fronted by Taylor’s long time friend Hayley Williams.

  • Hard Times (+ Heart Of Glass)
  • Burning Down The House
  • Still Into You
  • Caught In The Middle
  • Brick By Boring Brick
  • The Only Exception
  • That’s What You Get
  • Ain’t It Fun
  • This Is Why

Climate activists covered private jets in orange paint in a Taylor Swift-inspired stunt, but didn't get her plane

  • Two climate activists were arrested after appearing to target Taylor Swift's jet.
  • The activists broke into London's Stansted Airport and sprayed two jets with orange paint.
  • Swift's jet wasn't at the airport at the time.

Insider Today

Two climate activists from the Just Stop Oil group were arrested after covering private jets in orange paint in a Taylor Swift -inspired stunt.

A video posted on X on Thursday showed the two activists breaking into a private airfield at London's Stansted Airport — where they claimed Swift's jet was parked — before spraying two jets with paint.

🚨 JUST STOP OIL PAINT PRIVATE JETS HOURS AFTER TAYLOR SWIFT'S LANDS 🔥 Jennifer and Cole cut the fence into the private airfield at Stansted where @taylorswift13 's jet is parked, demanding an emergency treaty to end fossil fuels by 2030. 💸 Donate — https://t.co/UwALfVtRmR pic.twitter.com/aORdvUuQmU — Just Stop Oil (@JustStop_Oil) June 20, 2024

However, a representative for Stansted Airport told Business Insider that Swift's jet wasn't at the airport when the incident occurred.

It's possible that Swift's aircraft originally landed at the airport before being moved. According to flight tracking data cited by The Independent , Swift's Falcon 7x landed at Stansted at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Essex Police told BI that a 22-year-old from Brighton, England, and a 25-year-old from Dumbarton, Scotland, had been arrested "on suspicion of criminal damage and interference with the use or operation of national infrastructure."

They were detained shortly after 5:10 a.m. on Thursday morning, the statement added.

"We are not anti-protest but we will always take action where criminal acts take place," Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said in a statement obtained by BI.

Related stories

The protesters belonged to Just Stop Oil, a climate campaign group that has defaced famous artwork and landmarks, which most recently included spraying Stonehenge with orange paint.

A representative for Just Stop Oil confirmed to BI that the planes doused in paint did not belong to Swift.

They said the protest was "generally targeted at private planes," though the two people involved likely believed Swift's aircraft was at the airport.

The representative said the group singled out Swift's aircraft in its social media post because it is "the most emitting" of all celebrity private jets and because they believed that Stansted is where she usually keeps her private jet while in London.

BI previously reported that the singer spent more than 166 hours traveling in private jets between March and August of 2023 for the first leg of her widely popular Eras Tour.

However, according to a study by My Climate Tracker , cited by The Tab , Travis Scott was the celebrity with the most private jet use in 2023. The rapper took 137 flights, resulting in 6,061,300 kg of CO2 emissions, according to The Tab.

Meanwhile, Swift wasn't among the top 30 celebrities with the most private jet use in 2023, the outlet said.

That's a stark contrast to 2022.

According to Yard , a UK-based sustainability marketing firm, Swift produced the most CO2 emissions of all celebrities in 2022, with 170 flights and an average flight time of 80 minutes.

A spokesperson for Swift previously told BI that her jet is "loaned out regularly to other individuals" and to attribute most of the trips to the singer alone is "blatantly incorrect."

The singer's spokesperson also previously said she had purchased carbon credits to offset her jet use.

Swift is in London for the UK leg of the Eras Tour . She is expected to perform three sold-out shows at Wembley before returning in August for additional shows.
