Ron Nyswaner and Matt Bomer can’t quite agree about their first meeting. “Look at how we collaborate,” Bomer said with a laugh over a Zoom call with Nyswaner and IndieWire.

In fact, the retelling of their initial meeting (“You take this one, Ronnie,” Bomer said before quickly backtracking when he realized Nyswaner was skipping over their first Zoom call. “Never mind, scratch that”) is their “Fellow Travelers” partnership in microcosm. Both Nyswaner (who created the show) and Bomer (its star and executive producer) are able to quickly step in when the course needs correcting, and both are comfortable enough with one another not to let ego interfere.

That easy relationship translated into one of the greatest LGBTQ series ever made, one that is as sexy as it is political. (Quick, think of any other series with two gay male lead characters that goes as hard in both directions as “Fellow Travelers.” ) After their Zoom call and an in-person meeting at San Vincente Bungalows — Nyswaner’s initial reply about where they first met — Bomer and Nyswaner understood a few things. One, they really loved Thomas Mallon’s novel that the series would adapt. And two, they intuitively understood how much work would be required to bring it to life.

Starting with getting a greenlight.

“Things take a while to develop. And the way things are done, often, is that there’s no guaranteed green light until many, many, many things have been accomplished, like several scripts and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,” Nyswaner said. “And Matt just kept holding on and juggling his schedule. And that was really significant because I couldn’t really imagine someone else playing Hawkins Fuller.”

“I mean, I was taking jobs hoping to just incentivize Showtime to move faster and greenlight our show,” Bomer chimed in.

“Yeah. There were frantic calls from me to certain people saying, ‘We’re gonna lose Matt, please, please make this happen as fast as possible,'” Nyswaner said.

“Anything to move the needle,” Bomer added.

Is it any wonder that both men were passionate about the chance to bring to the screen Mallon’s tortured lovers Hawkins Fuller and Tim Laughlin — ultimately played by Bomer and Jonathan Bailey — when their epic romance is the kind of invigorating, enthralling love story queer audiences rarely get? Except that wasn’t quite enough. Mallon’s novel came out in 2007, and 2023 audiences wouldn’t accept a story that dug deep into the Lavender Scare of the ’50s without also exploring the even less-told stories of queer people of color. And Nyswaner had some other ideas up his sleeve.

“The story is so moving, and I knew Ron, just from his work over the years, was the perfect person to interpret that material,” Bomer said, pointing to the eight years Nyswaner had spent with the story prior to their meeting. “And he also had his own vision for the source material. And I thought that his vision in terms of that, bringing Marcus and Frankie to the story and expanding it through these huge historic events in our country’s history and our community’s history, I thought would make it really cinematically interesting and carry over into eight hours’ worth of material.”

Nyswaner stuck with the project partly because Hawk and Tim “really haunted me. I sort of just wanted to be in bed with them. Or watching, I think. But to spend time with them, knowing that I was going to be spending probably a few years of my life with them, just really was something I wanted to do.” Likewise, he knew instinctively that Tim would die of AIDS, making that bleak decade in which the American government ignored its queer community a bookend to the Lavender Scare.

“They had both been caused, one by our government’s active persecution of gay people and one by our government’s indifference to us,” Nyswaner said. “So that just seemed natural. And then you had to fill it in. Like, I can’t wait 30-plus years for them to see each other. I gotta figure out some other ways. So it was very practical, actually.” Filling in those decades brought with it stories about racism within and without the queer community, gender identity, the Vietnam War, the White Night riots in the aftermath of Harvey Milk’s assassination, and more.

Bomer points to the care and forethought that Nyswaner lavished on “Fellow Travelers” even before production, calling his deeply considered ideas about everything from production design to score “pretty much bulletproof.”

“As a producer, what I could bring to the table was more relationships. I made myself amenable to any chemistry reads that we had,” Bomer said. “But even those, we had such a fantastic casting director that it was just a matter of [the perfect people] coming in and reading. My thing as a producer is I don’t ever make an executive decision on another actor because I don’t want that karma on my shoulders!” And of course, Bomer relied on his 20 years in episodic TV to weigh in on anything that might benefit from his experience.

All true, according to Nyswaner, but also not quite the full picture. “On the set, Matt’s commitment to the show extended beyond showing up and giving a great performance,” he said before addressing Bomer. “On the set, how welcoming you are to day players or people with small parts. I know that it adds a burden to the person who has to, in the next few minutes, give a performance, but I watched you do that and just being a leader. And as nice a guy as Matt might be it does mean that little extra bit of energy you have to give because these people have to be inspired. And I always felt that Matt was Number 1 on the call sheet in every way.”

“If I was able to behave in that way, it’s only because I’ve been shown great examples from people I’ve worked with in the past,” Bomer replied. “And you understand when you’ve been a part of something for a while, and you have the responsibility of being a producer as well, you want to give love to all the ingredients that go into the pot. But on set, if it did take an effort when you’re exhausted and it’s hour 70 or whatever it is, I find that’s always worth it because even if it’s just making an effort to ingratiate yourself with someone who’s there for the day or the scene, it, it bleeds into the scene work. It adds an accessibility and a comfortability and a collaboration once the work is up and running.”

As for telling another story together in the future? Bomer is keen. “I’ve tried!” he said. “I’ve courted him so many times, he’s such a recalcitrant collaborator. He’s gonna wait till it’s the right one, and I respect that, and I get that. But, listen, I’m here with open arms, Ron.”

“Yeah, hey, Matt, same here,” Nyswaner replied. “Send a book, whatever!”

While solo trips are wonderful ways to spend some quality time alone, they’re also ideal for making new friends .

Thanks to modern technology, we can use apps to meet other travelers while traveling solo.

To give you a leg up, I’ve compiled six of the best apps for meeting other travelers when you’re on the road, including where to get them, best features and the pros and cons of each app.

Couchsurfing

Facebook groups, other ways to meet travelers abroad, learn the local language, keep an open mind, find tours about what you love, stay in hostels (and join the parties), and one more thing....

Summary:  Easy to use app to find food experiences and people to share them with.

Eatwith provides an incredible opportunity to meet people who share the most delicious passion out there: food!  In other words, if you’re a traveling foodie, this is the app for you.

Not only can you browse food and eating experiences in the app, you can search for others (both locals and fellow travelers) to eat with.

• Thousands of learner friendly videos (especially beginners)
• Handpicked, organized, and annotated by FluentU's experts
• Integrated into courses for beginners

You simply add the city and food experience that you want to have, and if you’re lucky, you’ll have a great partner for poking around a Guatemala market, trying tapas in Barcelona or eating a guinea pig in Peru (yes, this is common!).

I tried this app once and was invited to dinner at a Greek grandmother’s little beach house. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

The downside of this app is that sometimes there aren’t that many experiences listed, so it works best in peak travel seasons.

Summary:  Social media style travel friend finding website.

With a pleasing design and an easy-to-use interface, Backpackr is the premiere website to meet travel buddies and connect with other like-minded travelers around the world.

• Slow down or loop the tricky parts
• Show or hide subtitles
• Review words with our powerful learning engine

You can use the site before your trip (say, to find someone to travel with), but it also works well on the road, with thousands of users, active message boards and a common room, where you can ask for advice and recommendations.

The site excels at using the format of social media, but for people who are traveling, or will travel soon. I’ve used the app and I ended up with some fun travel buddies that accompanied me from Crete all the way to Turkey.

The site even sends push notifications when someone is en route to your destination so you can check them out or message them.

The downside of Backpackr is that there is no Android app, so you need a laptop to access it.

Summary:  Long-lived and well-liked app to help you find a place to sleep with a local.

Use Couchsurfing to find locals whose couch you can sleep on. For free! 

• Learn words in the context of sentences
• Swipe left or right to see more examples from other videos
• Go beyond just a superficial understanding

The Couchsurfing community connects you with people who have free space in their house and are willing to offer it to like-minded people.

But even if you’d rather stay in a hotel or hostel, Couchsurfing can still be a great tool for meeting new people.

First, you can create a profile and select that you’d like to grab a beer or coffee with people, not necessarily stay in their homes.

Second, there’s a feature that lets you post what you’re planning to do that day. People can join your group to participate in your plans. Locals and travelers alike can get together to have some fun!

Couchsurfing is by far one of the most popular communities of like-minded people who are passionate about traveling, meeting new people and making friends.

The only downside of Couchsurfing is that you don’t know anything about the “couch” (which can also be a bed) until you arrive at the house, so picky travelers may want to avoid it.

From training for a marathon, to practicing a l anguage , to having deep conversations about philosophy, Meetup is one of the most incredible tools for people looking for friends in a new area. Especially in big cities like Berlin, London and Tokyo! You could join a different Meetup every single day of the week.

Women who code? Yep.

Solo travelers in Amsterdam? For sure.

• Covering all the tricky edge cases, eg.: phrases, idioms, collocations, and separable verbs

Make sure you read the description of each Meetup group before you join. Some of them require you to bring an item, pay a fee or just read something beforehand.

The only downside here is that it’s not geared specifically for travelers, so you’re most likely to meet locals here.

This app is reserved for female travelers, so it can provide a safe way to meet other female travelers with on the road. It’s worth knowing that the app verifies the users to increase safety. 

Once you download the app, you create a profile, list a destination and then start making connections with other women. 

You can use the app before you leave or while you’re in the middle of an epic backpacking trip.

I’ve heard from friends that sometimes, the number of people using the app can be low in the off season, so it’s probably better to use it in the high season.

Summary:  Trusted groups for locating fellow travelers and travel advice.

Initially, the Facebook app may seem more suited to staying in touch with loved ones back home than to making friends in new cities.

But Facebook Groups are incredible tools for meeting people around the world.

Before hopping on a plane, find a Facebook group targeted toward travelers with your needs and interests.

For example, if you’re a solo female traveler, join Girls LOVE Travel® and meet other women who will be traveling to the same location.

Want to get even more specific? Try Facebook groups such as South America Travel with Kids or Chat food travel in TW (Taiwan) .

Facebook groups are incredible assets for meeting people in different cities. These groups are filled with posts and invitations to local events, where you can meet tons of fellow explorers.

If you don’t feel like downloading a bunch of apps, don’t worry! There are lots of other ways you can meet fellow travelers.

It may seem like common sense, but if you want to meet locals, it helps to know their language. Sure, wherever you go you may find people who know some English. But if you really want to interact with locals as you travel, learn the local language.

You might find yourself picking up the language through sheer immersion—that is, just by being surrounded by the language.

Mutual interests are the glue of new friendships.

There’s something magical about the common area of a nice hostel.

Everyone there is open to making new friends. You all always have something in common, even if it’s just that you’re travelers to this new city. Because of this connection, small parties and hang-outs often form in the common area.

And more often than not, hanging out in the common room leads to an adventure. It’s not unusual for groups to end up going out together, experiencing the city as new friends.

Even if staying in a shared room isn’t your taste, you can still look for private rooms in a hostel. In the end, you can have the best of both worlds: the privacy of a solo room and the social aspect of the common area.

The joys of traveling solo are endless. It is freeing to explore new places alone—you can go where you please, eat when you want, and enjoy quality time with yourself uninterrupted. The interest in solo travel has been slowly rising for a while, in tandem with the desire for deeper, slower, more connective trave l. For many, solo travel is the perfect way to achieve this—it provides an opportunity to trust your instinct, go with your gut, and get lost in the experience. You rely on yourself rather than on others’ whims or desires.

But, if you’re not a seasoned solo traveler, it can be a daunting prospect. In an age of constant connectivity, the idea of being alone for an extended period of time is stark. Below, we spoke to travelers who frequently book solo trips about their golden rules for traveling alone.

Dining alone isn’t weird

For most people, the thought of dining alone is one of the biggest barriers to traveling solo. But once you get past the conviction that everyone is noticing or judging you, it’s a totally freeing experience. “Dining alone isn’t as uncommon as you might imagine,” says Estée Lalonde, a creative director and influencer with a passion for solo travel. “I personally find it empowering! Sometimes I bring a book with me or watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix with my headphones on, but other times I just enjoy the atmosphere and end up chatting to the people at the table next to me.”

Book counter dining at restaurants if it's too weird for you

If you are someone who does feel uncomfortable about dining alone, opt for a bar or counter seat. It’s much less intimidating than having a whole table to yourself, and you are more likely to end up chatting to the staff or the person sitting next to you. "The first time I went out for a meal alone, I went to JG Melon on the Upper East Side of New York City ,” Sarah James, Condé Nast Traveller ’s deputy digital editor, says. “I took a book, and nervously shuffled onto a bar stool for my burger—but ended up chatting away to the charming bartender and the women sat next to me. Now I often opt for a counter seat when eating alone, and no longer take a book with me. Either I end up talking to someone or just enjoy the peace. A general rule I live by—we're all so wrapped up in our own lives, no one is paying much attention to other people."

Consider a hostel

Not only are hostels affordable, but they're also great places to meet fellow travelers—whether they're in the same solo boat as you or not. Many have a cheap bar onsite that allows you to fall into natural conversation with compatriots who may become friends, or at least will have great tips for things to do.

Fake it till you make it

Most people feel nervous about meeting new people, and introverts especially struggle to make the first move when in a new place. But remember that everyone is in the same boat, and most solo travelers will have experienced those same emotions. The first five seconds are the hardest, but once you’ve introduced yourself, you’ll quickly realize it wasn’t as big a deal as you originally thought. You’d kick yourself if you let a bit of shyness ruin your trip, so use that as the motivation you need to approach a fellow traveler. And remember, if you present with confidence, that will show—fake it til you make it is a reliable life rule to follow.

Never consolidate all of your assets

“This is a lesson that I learned the hard way after getting pickpocketed in a crowded Jerusalem marketplace,” says global digital director Arati Menon, “I had stupidly carried all my credit cards and cash with me—luckily no passport!—in a single wallet and as a result, had no way of paying the hotel bill later that day when I checked out. Now, I always split my cards and cash (and IDs) across various places: wallet, purse, luggage—and if possible, store at least one of these in a locked safe back at the hotel.”

Don’t fear loneliness

“Remember that a bit of loneliness can be bracing and character-building,” says Toby Skinner, Condé Nast Traveller ’s features director. “My experience traveling is generally that people are decent, kind and interesting—and you found that out most acutely by being alone (whereas everyone leaves couples well alone.) Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been on my own—like when I was stranded in Nanjing at 2 a.m. by a delayed train in 2001, and a local student let me bunk in his dorm room for the night.”

Take the train

“While even the most extroverted of travelers avoid chit chat like the plague on a plane, I have found traveling by train to be a much more social means of transport," says associate editor Hannah Towey. "Last summer, I traveled solo on the Amtrak Coastal Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and spent the entirety of the 9-hour journey in the communal observation lounge, where fellow travelers rotated in and out, sharing tables and playing cards while admiring the views. As the sun set on the second half of the trip, a few musically-inclined passengers formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and others trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs in different languages. It might take a few more hours than a flight, but who knows, you might even find the Ethan Hawke to your Julie Delpy and spend a spontaneous evening together in Vienna.”

Plan around cultural events

Arriving at a destination just as the locals are gearing up for an important cultural event can be an incredible way to immerse yourself straight away. Look up religious festivals, bank holidays, and street parties to see what time is best to visit and plan accordingly. You’ll get a real flavor of the people, the food, and even the music, and you might end up making friends along the way.

Research solo travel in your destination

As obvious as “do your research” sounds, it’s an important step to remember. Look at online forums and speak to people who have previously visited the destination. What safety precautions should you be taking? Is it safe to walk between locations, or is it better to use taxis? Are taxis easy to find? What is the destination's culture like after dark? For women, in particular, it is best to plan ahead to avoid getting stranded in remote neighborhoods after dark.

Have a rough plan for each day

It can feel daunting waking up in a brand new destination and not knowing where to start, so make sure to create vague itineraries for your trip. What are your non-negotiables in this destination? Any big attractions you want to tick off? Restaurants you’ve been desperate to try? Beaches you’ve always wanted to visit? “I like to have 3-5 little activities in mind for each day, like visiting a particular store or trying the local cuisine,” Estée tells us. “If you have a bit of direction you can leave space in between each activity to be spontaneous and discover the local area.”

Build in group activities

Booking tours and group events is a great way to meet other travelers. Most hostels have a list of activities available for guests to sign up for, and if not, then there are walking tours or live music events at local bars. “Try to see people as opportunities," Toby advises. “I'd build in communal activities to your itinerary and remember that you’ll probably never see these people again, so you have nothing to lose in almost any interaction and possibly a lot to gain—though there might be a touch of male privilege in that.”

Walk as much as you can

“Sometimes when I travel to a new place, I can be nervous to leave my bed as a solo traveler,” Estée admits. “As soon as I get outside and start walking I feel better—like I’m part of the city and that I belong there!” Exploring by foot is a great way to get to know the bones of a destination. You’ll soon create a mental map of the area nearest your accommodation and might stumble upon some hidden gems you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

Allow yourself to be spontaneous

On that note, try to allow yourself some spontaneity. Having a rough plan is definitely advisable, but don’t stop yourself from following your gut if you have a sudden urge to pop into a shop, follow the sound of the crowds or head for the beach. It’s often the spur-of-the-moment decisions that result in the best experiences.

Bring good books

It’s easy to whip out your phone and rely on scrolling when you’re by yourself, and while that is a great way to decompress if you’re feeling jittery, there are few things more romantic than settling in at a street-side cafe and getting lost in the pages of a good book .

Bring a journal

Journaling has become a popular pastime of late, and keeping a travel journal is a great way to combine the mental health benefits of getting out your thoughts and feelings with the memories and emotions of traveling solo. “I find all of that time alone enables me to clear my head, and journaling is a great way to regulate those emotions,” Estée explains.

Keep a separate copy of your personal details

Sounds old school, but in lieu of printing out paper copies of all your bank details, phone numbers, and accommodations details, try keeping a document of all your information and emailing it to yourself. This way, if you lose your phone, you can ask the reception of your accommodation or staff at a hotel/restaurant/bar to borrow a phone and log into your email account to access anything you need. It’s also worth memorizing your card details and any emergency phone numbers (both personal and local emergency service numbers).

Take other safety precautions

There are plenty of ways to protect yourself when traveling alone. Sharing your location with your friends and family back home is a lovely way to keep in touch without having to actually message them—they can watch your journey from afar and keep track of your whereabouts if you haven’t contacted them for a while. Remember to bring a padlock for your backpack and lockers if you’re staying in hostels, and study basic phrases in the language of your destination, just in case you get lost and need some help.

Don’t forget insurance

There’s always something that doesn’t go to plan on any trip, and as a solo traveler, you’ll want to make sure you mitigate any stress that comes from changing itineraries. Buying travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself from any transport cancellations and unforeseen circumstances, and will cover any costs from injuries or thefts. Sounds scary, but it’ll be worth it if the worst happens!

A little bit about me, your curator for this go round: I’m Pete Volk, our senior curation editor. I love movies of all stripes, but my main areas of interest are action movies (especially martial arts), classic Hollywood comedies (shout out to the GOAT, Ernst Lubitsch), and keeping up with new releases from around the world (I’ve watched 48 from 2024 so far).

It’s been an entire month since my last one of these, so I’m not going to walk through everything I’ve watched. Instead, some highlights: The Insider , the Alienoid movies, The French , Girlfight , Hero , Kill , Thelma , Chime , The First Omen , and a rewatch of Mad Max: Fury Road.
