It is worth persisting just don’t quote a reference number before you book

Despite not getting a call back on Sunday and then being told a higher price when quoting a reference number. We called again and after a long wait we spoke to Peeter who was charming, sorting out exactly what we wanted with the price we wanted. I like the app.

Easy to book without any fuss

Well the price was right. Every thing was easy to book and the option to pay Monthly. Ideal location for a great holiday and a great price. And added bonus Transfers booked at the same time. Travel Republic is a great place to book a holiday.

*** NEARLY GOT OVERCHARGED ***

Booked an all inclusive to Turkey, agreed an acceptable price and paid in full! 2 hours later got a call from TR asking I pay another £217 as a mistake had been made? I told them to FO cancelled the holiday and got a refund! One week later I booked the exact same holiday, upgraded the room and paid the exact same amount as before??? All has been confirmed!!! SO if you get a call from TR before you agree to pay for their mistake check the prices again online......

Mis-sold hotel - not a 5 star hotel as advertised by Travel Republic

Annoyed to find out on our arrival that Travel Republic had mis-sold us our hotel as a 5 star hotel when it is in fact only a 4 star hotel - there is a 4 star plaque on the front entrance. As a 4 star hotel, the hotel and its facilities are what you would expect BUT we specifically wanted to book a 5 star hotel, as this was a special occasion trip.

Travel Republic - travelrepublic.co.uk

travelrepublic.co.uk

Is travel republic legitimate.

As a seasoned traveler, I have come across many websites claiming to offer the best deals on flights, accommodations , and tours. However, I recently stumbled upon travelrepublic.co.uk, and I have to say, I was impressed by the range of options available on the site.

Firstly, I must mention the user-friendly interface of travelrepublic.co.uk. Even if you’re a first-time user, it’s easy to navigate the site and find what you’re looking for. The homepage offers a search bar where you can enter your desired destination and travel dates, and the website will pull up the best deals available. You can also filter your search results by price range, hotel rating, and other factors.

One thing I found particularly useful was the option to book flights and accommodations separately or as a package. Often, it’s cheaper to book a package deal, but it’s also good to have the option to compare prices and book individually.

Travelrepublic.co.uk offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious five-star hotels. I was impressed by the number of options available, even in lesser-known destinations. Plus, the site offers user reviews and ratings for each accommodation, which helps in making an informed decision.

Another feature I liked was the ‘deals’ section on travelrepublic.co.uk. This section offers daily and weekly discounts on flights, hotels, and vacation packages. If you’re flexible with your travel dates, this is an excellent way to score a great deal.

In addition to flights and accommodations, travelrepublic.co.uk also offers tours and activities. This is great if you’re planning a trip but aren’t sure what to do once you get there. The site offers tours and activities in destinations worldwide, and you can book them in advance to avoid the hassle of finding things to do on the spot.

One thing I found lacking on travelrepublic.co.uk was the customer service options. While the site offers an FAQ section and email support, there is no phone support or live chat option. This could be frustrating if you have an urgent issue that needs resolving.

In terms of pricing, I found travelrepublic.co.uk to be competitive. While it may not always offer the cheapest deals, the site offers a range of options at various price points. Plus, the site offers a price match guarantee, meaning if you find a cheaper deal elsewhere, they will match the price.

Overall, I would recommend travelrepublic.co.uk to anyone planning a trip. The site offers a user-friendly interface, a wide range of options, and competitive pricing. While customer service options could be improved, the site offers enough features and benefits to make it a go-to for travel planning.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of Travel Republic?

As a travel enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for reliable websites that can help me plan my trips . One such website that I came across recently is travelrepublic.co.uk. In this review, I will share my honest opinion about the pros and cons of this website.

Pros of Travel Republic:

  • User-friendly interface: The website has a simple and easy-to-use interface that makes it effortless for users to navigate and find what they are looking for. The homepage has a search bar where you can enter your destination and travel dates, and the website will pull up the best deals available. The website also offers filters to narrow down the search results based on your preferences.
  • Wide range of options: Travelrepublic.co.uk offers a wide range of options for flights, hotels, and tours. The website has partnerships with various airlines, hotel chains, and tour operators, which enables it to offer an extensive range of options to its users.
  • Competitive pricing: The website offers competitive pricing on flights, hotels, and tours. You can find some great deals on the website, especially if you are flexible with your travel dates.
  • Package deals: The website offers package deals for flights and hotels, which can be a great way to save money. The website also offers package deals for tours and activities, which can be a convenient way to book your travel activities in advance.
  • Reviews and ratings : The website features reviews and ratings from other users for each accommodation and tour option. This feature can be helpful in making an informed decision about where to stay and what activities to book.

Cons of Travel Republic:

  • Limited customer service options: The website offers email support and an FAQ section, but there is no phone support or live chat option. This can be frustrating if you have an urgent issue that needs to be resolved.
  • Hidden fees: The website sometimes adds hidden fees, such as booking fees or credit card processing fees, which can increase the overall cost of your booking. These fees are not always clearly displayed, which can be misleading for users.
  • Limited destinations: While the website offers a wide range of options, it does not cover all destinations. If you are planning to travel to a less popular destination, you may not find many options on the website.
  • Limited payment options: The website only accepts payment through credit cards. This can be inconvenient for users who prefer to pay through other payment methods, such as PayPal or bank transfer.
  • Limited cancellation policies: The website has limited cancellation policies, and the cancellation fees can be high. This can be problematic if your travel plans change, and you need to cancel your booking.

Overall opinion of Travel Republic

travelrepublic.co.uk is a user-friendly website that offers a wide range of options for flights, hotels, and tours at competitive prices. The website features reviews and ratings from other users, which can be helpful in making an informed decision. However, the website has some limitations, such as limited customer service options, hidden fees, limited payment options, limited cancellation policies, and limited coverage of destinations. Overall, I would recommend the website for its ease of use and competitive pricing, but users should be aware of the website’s limitations before making a booking.

From beach breaks to city getaways, Travel Republic offers a range of great last minute deals on hotels, flights, and airport transfers. With over two million holidaymakers booking with the website annually, they have become one of the go-to places for finding the cheapest offers on trips.

One of the best features that I have come across when using Travel Republic is the ‘Low Holiday Deposit’, which is available at $60 USD per person and gives customers the chance to secure their holiday for a much lower cost than would normally be required. This means that if you are unable to fork out the hundreds for a normal deposit, you can use the Low Holiday Deposit option to guarantee your place, particularly useful in the high vacation season.

Searching for a holiday is simple enough, with the option to enter all your travel preferences or browse through the recommended breaks if you are a bit more flexible with when you travel. Once you have selected a destination, you can apply a whole host of different filters, such as star rating, property type, facilities, price range and customer rating. Under each city, there is also an ‘About’ section that offers information on currency, language, things to do and the best hotels to book. This is great for providing a quick breakdown of each city and what to expect.

One criticism that has been levelled at Travel Republic in the past is that the cost of holidays have been known to suddenly go up, even after making the booking, requiring customers to pay extra or risk losing the money they have already paid. This is included in their terms and conditions and, in my opinion, is an important fact to consider before making a last minute reservation with Travel Republic.

Travel Republic is a UK based online travel booking site with local websites for the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Austria. The travel agency seems to be Europe-oriented but it offers a search facility for thousands of destinations around the world. If you are in one of the countries with a dedicated TravelRepublic online service, then you should definitely make use of this site to book a hotel or flight to your destination.

Cheap airport transfers are offered at destinations covered by the Travel Republic network, and to take make use of this service, you simply need to book for it on the website.

So why should you choose Travel Republic among hundreds of other competing travel agencies? The answer is simple. Just by going to the website, you will discover a lot of interesting deals and services. The main thing that catches the eye on TravelRepublic.co.uk is the ability to book a hotel for only

£1.00.This is definitely a first and the lowest deposit ever for booking a hotel. If you pay with a debit card then you will not be charged any fees. The sweetest thing is that you have 21 days to pay the balance before your date of departure.

The fact that over 2 million travelers make use of this online booking agency shows that the company is doing the right thing. Travel Republic is not just a travel search engine for finding your travel needs but it is a service that protects your booking the moment you purchase a hotel room or flight. This website is associated with IATA,ABTA and ATOL.The goal of this travel site is to help you get the lowest price on accommodation and flights, and they do this by gathering prices from partner airlines, hotels and travel agencies, so that you can simply choose the best offer from the list. Finding the best deal is a matter of entering your search preferences and clicking the search button.

Searching for hotels is the first task that you might want to do. This can be done at http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk/accomodation/achotels.aspx

The nice orange blue themed interface offers you a travel search form that gives you the option to search for hotels, flights, car hire or package holidays. To search for low-cost hotels, enter your destination name, number of rooms and check-in/check-out dates. You can purchase bookings using the British Pound or US Dollar. Click the button below to check availability of your preferred bookings. The site claims to offer a listing of over 200,000 hotel accommodations that a traveler can choose from, ranging from 2 stars to 5 stars.

As a European-centered booking site, the top destinations for users of this site are European countries like France, Italy, UK, Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Portugal. Travel Republic offers beach resorts, city deals and all-inclusive holiday packages at the lowest prices to these top destinations. Beach resort rooms start at an amazing £1.00 per night and the average price is around £4.50 per night for 2 adults sharing a room. There is no doubt that TravelRepublic.co.uk has the lowest hotel room rentals among most online travel agencies that I have encountered. City deals or city breaks start from £9.00 a night and all-inclusive holidays start from £5.00 a night.

The favorite destinations on Travel Republic that are popular with holiday bookers are Marjoca,Algarve,Costa Blanca,Dalaman,Tenerife,Costa de Sol and others. You simply have to browse through the list to check the wide offering of resorts that are offered by the website. To find a holiday destination, simply search the name on the form to find hotels in and around this destination.

The next task after doing a hotel search is booking a flight to your destination. To book a flight, go to this link http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk/charters.aspx

Here, you will encounter a form that requires you to destination and departure airports. You will also need to specify the dates for departure and returning. Four classes are available to choose from and these are the First Class, Economy, Business and Premium Economy. Travel Republic provides flights that connect routes between 2,000 destinations. Flight deals for beach resorts, city deals and long haul are given are on the right table. £467.City deals for top cities like Venice,Barcelona,New York, Dubai, Glasgow, Milan, Hamburg and Amsterdam are available. For example, a flight deal to Venice might cost only £35 and Barcelona only

This is a low-cost option for travelers who want to have a perfect holiday at one of the top tourist destinations.Travellers can choose from beachside resorts, city breaks and all-inclusive holiday packages. Here, the combined prices for hotels and flights are shown and these are more affordable than doing separate bookings. For example, you might get a hotel in Algarve, Portugal for only £5.00 and flights for only £33.00.A city break in Rome, Italy might cost only £20.00 and a flight only £44.00.An all- inclusive holiday deal in Crete, Greece might cost only £11 for a hotel room and £53 for a flight. Car hire is available in over 7,500 areas in European and international destinations. Car hire deals are featured on the page in top countries like Spain, Greece, Portugal and the USA.

Airport Transfers

The fastest way to get to an airport or leave the airport on arrival is to book an airport transfer service. This has advantages in that you will not need to make use of your car and leave it at the airport when you depart. Airport transfers offered by mini buses, private taxis and shuttles operate on time and they help to get where you are going quickly. Rates vary depending on the location, shuttle service and distance. For example, shuttle services in Egypt are very cheap, starting at £2.00, a 7 seater in Bulgaria might cost you £14 and a 4 seater might cost you £14 in Malta. Travel Republic allows you to search and book an airport transfer that will take you to the airport on your day of departure or transport you to your hotel on arrival at the destination airport. You can make your booking on http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk/airporttransfers/apcriteria.aspx

Airport Car Parking

Airport car parking is another convenient service that can be booked on Travelrepublic.co.uk.Both off- airport and on-airport services are offered as well as chauffeured services for those who cannot drive.Currently, it seems airport car parking is only available for UK airports. You can rent this service for as low as £5.00 a day depending on the airport. To book this service on Travel Republic, go to http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk/carparking/cpdefault.aspx

Finally, you can explore the annual top attractions that are featured on the website in top destinations like Florida, USA, Spain, Las Vegas, Rome, New York, UK and Iceland. These are resorts and events with top selling tickets such as Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando, Halloween Horror Nights, Legoland, Discovery Cove and Dinner shows. Booking travel online? Here's how you can avoid scams

is travel republic safe to book with

Morgan Macfarlane arrived at her hotel in Orizaba, Mexico, last May, ready to quickly drop her bags off and go get dinner. But when she tried to check in, an employee told her they weren’t fully operational yet and didn’t have an advanced booking system.

She had booked the room and prepaid about $40 through Airbnb and pulled up the confirmation on the platform’s app on her phone.

“And he was like, ‘That isn’t our listing,’” the 27-year-old digital advertising associate and travel content creator said.

While the address was the same, the listing she booked turned out to be fake, she said. Airbnb refunded Macfarlane’s money, and she paid in cash to stay the night at the hotel. An Airbnb spokesperson said the host had since been banned.

"False listings of course have no place on our platform," the spokesperson said in an email. "The host never received any money through Airbnb since we handle the payments for reservations and hosts do not receive initial payouts until 24 hours after a successful check-in."

Macfarlane is not alone.

A recent survey of more than 7,000 adults in seven countries – including over 1,000 in the U.S. – from online protection company McAfee found that 35% of American respondents had been the victim of a scam while booking travel online, or know someone who has. The survey results released earlier this month also showed that 40% of those who had money stolen lost over $1,000 prior to their trip as a result.

Among U.S. adults surveyed, 13% also said they had given credit card information to a fake website that was then used for fraudulent payments. Here’s how travelers can avoid falling prey to travel booking scams online.

How can travelers avoid scams online?

Steve Grobman, McAfee’s senior vice president and chief technology officer, said travelers should be on their guard while browsing. “The scammers know that there are people that are bargain hunting,” he said.

◾If travelers are looking at listings through a third party, they need to read reviews for the specific property, in the case of a vacation rental, for instance. Macfarlane said the listing she booked didn’t have any reviews but had photos that looked legitimate.

◾If travelers are not browsing on a well-known travel site, such as Airbnb or Vrbo, they should pay close attention to the payment methods accepted. Grobman warned never to pay by wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift cards, which they often will not be able to get back.

“The scammers will actually sometimes use the fact that something is a good deal as rationale for why they're insisting on those forms of payments,” he said. “They'll say, you know, ‘How can we offer such a good deal? It's because we don't have the overhead of traditional credit cards.’”

◾If a deal looks too good to be true, Grobman added, it probably is.

He said that fraudulent sites look “almost identical” to legitimate ones, making it very difficult to tell them apart. Those running the fake site may even add forged ratings, and vary them so they look more real.

“They'll do things like that to add credibility, because people have gotten in the habit of looking for things like ratings or looking for certain telltale signs that we all see on legitimate sites,” Grobman said.

He suggested trying to validate that the site exists, such as checking to see whether it has been referenced in legitimate media outlets.

Fake booking sites may also use some of the same techniques as above-board businesses, like buying keywords on Google and tracking users who may be looking for those sites. “That's why if you visit one of these sites and decide not to make a transaction, you could still get a targeted ad popping up in your browser and social media a couple of hours later, that would be for the same location that you might have been researching,” Grobman said.

◾Using a VPN, or virtual private network , that hides your IP address and physical location can help prevent that kind of tracking, he noted.

What can you do if you get scammed online?

If a traveler paid by credit card, they can call the credit card company and dispute the charge, which a scammer will have a much harder time justifying than a real business. For those who have booked through a reputable broker but run into an issue with the person who listed the property or other service, Grobman said those platforms can typically mediate.

Travelers who may have been the target of a scam can also report it to the Federal Trade Commission and their state attorney general, according to the FTC’s website .

“If you can stick to sites that have a high reputation and have safeguards in place, that's always preferable,” Grobman said.

PLEASE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE

I would never book a holiday through travel republic again, terrible company, with bad business practices.

Booked via Internet and then tried to phone to amend accommodation from hb to AI 30 minutes later which they couldn't do, which was fine but at same time said I was still waiting for flight info which they said I would receive by the next evening.

Next evening came, still no flight info even tho accommodation & transfere detail confirmed, I checked the flight company website to ensure flights still available, they were, but as travel republic had taken money for flights I didn't want to double book flights then get charged. I tried numerous times to get through to travel republic but couldn't so left details via website but was not happy as supposed to be flying next day.

On the day of travel finally spoke to someone at TR that I had to phone at 9am said they would call me back they did @ 10 to say no flights booked would now cost extra£100 per person aswell, TR took no responsibility for this lapse saying they could not get onto Ryan air site day before to book flights !!! WHY didn't the tell me the day before???? I could have booked the flights myself at half the price now I was left with no choice but to pay extra, asked to speak to person in charge and I was told they would call me back, THEY DID NOT! Why book accom and transferred for a client without making sure they had flights , I am about to send complaint to company but doubt they will care as I've had no communication from them at all, despite them having my email, home & mobile numbers. TERRIBLE COMPANY, DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM HAVE PIECE OF MIND AND BOOK YOUSELF DIRECT WITH INDIVIDUAL COMPANY'S ALOT LESS HASSLE AND BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE, TRAVEL REPUBLIC JUST WANT UR MONEY AND DO NOT DELIVER WHAT IS PROMISED!

My name is Sophie and I work for Travel Republic. Firstly I would like to apologise for your negative experience with our company and that you were unhappy with the service you received from us.

If you could send me a private message with your booking reference, or let me know the lead passenger name and where you stayed, then I can look into this for you and try to come up with a solution for you.

Once again I do apologise and hope we can get this resolved.

Hi Sophie_TR,

I have sent you a private message, I look forwards to your response.

I have used Travel Republic a few times, and have never had a problem. I booked hotels with them for Thailand last year and got a really good deal, compared to other sites.

' class=

I have used Travel republic twice and have another holiday booked with them In October. I have not experienced any problems with them at all, and when I noticed an error in the booking name I got through on the phone easily and the problem was sorted out with out further charge to myself.

Travel republic are always very competative in price too

I am john of Leicester and have traveled with Travel Republic a few times now and am traveling with them in august with my family . I have not had any problems with them , and my holiday was sorted in a day all over the internet .Well done Travel Republic

Travel Republic. Hear is my story so far. My daughter and partner & baby booked an all inclusive holiday, my daughter is a veggie so she needed to ask if the hotel was geared up for that. she was told it was and also a cot will be available. when she paid for the holiday she got a conformation e mail

saying that the all inclusive lite had been booked, at no time was there a mention of all inclusive lite anywhere within the advert, she then called TR and they told her that she will need to upgrade and pay the extra cost and a £20 admin charge, my daughter challenged this and they quite rightly backed down and waved the cost, they told her she was now fully all inclusive.

Upon arrival at the hotel in the evening with a very tired 18 month old their was NO cot nor was their one available, the little one had to sleep in the bed with her and her partner, not good.

In the morning at breakfast she was told that she could not take drinks with her i.e. Juice for little one as she had not paid for it. at lunch all that is on offer for my daughter to eat was salad and thats all there will be available, she again was told she could not take drinks with her for the baby. unless she paid for them that was. the next time the restaurant will be open is 5 hours, my daughter tried to ask for some juice to put in the babies bottle and was told the restaurant is closed, the guy told her waving his arms and was very rude to the point my daughter turned around and left, she said he wasn't going to be challenged about it as he was already very aggressive.

My daughter called TR who listed her complaints and tried to call her back but she didn't hear her phone. that was when she asked me, (mum) to call on her behalf, Whilst im alarmed at what I have heard so far I gave them a call, I was told that she will be moved and someone called Ben from TR contract hotel will be in touch with her.

She waited all day, in the mean time however she decided to see the manager of the hotel, the manager informed her that TR keep mis selling this holiday as all in inclusive when it is in fact all inclusive lite, you could argue why call it all inclusive but thats another storey, regardless, it seams that TR are in breach of there package holiday selling.

That evening when my daughter didn't hear anything back from this so called ben she called me and told me what she had found out and could I again call TR, I did just that and was told that Ben had now gone home and that will e mail him again in the morning. its shocking the way that this has been allowed to go on, my grandson is kept from basic human rights of water on the grounds TR mis sold this holiday, the hotel are not geared up for veggies and by the time the restaurant opens its doors in the evening at 7.30pm my grandson will be asleep with no concessions for children. my daughter is still on this holiday as I type this this morning, god only knows whats going to happen today. she has been charged so far for the simplest of things. and no she doesn't want to graze on salad all week like a rabbit.

I will update this as soon as i NO if anything has been done or we are just fobbed off.. I do think this should be taken up with arbitration, clearly a breach has been made.

Travel Republic director Kane Pirie appeared in court today at the start of a summary trial on charges that he and the online retailer have systematically breached the ATOL Regulations.

The charges brought by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) allege Pirie and Travel Republic operated in such a way as to sell package holidays without either the necessary ATOL or as the agent of an ATOL holder.

Counsel for the CAA Ian Croxford told Stratford Magistrates Court: "We will show there were packages sold and inadequate information was given to consumers."

I usually book through direct holidays but have seen cheaper holidays on travel republic and low cost holidays but I'm unsure if it is safe to use these?

I'm travelling to a country I go to 3 times every year so I know the area.

' class=

Booked a couple of times with Travel Republic, both in Spain. No problems, you pay up front when you book.

I used http://www.skoosh.com last month and got a good deal for a 4 star hotel in Lille.

Both are safe to use. There seems to be a misconception that anything that's not a package is not safe but I've never ahd any troubles and always get a better deal through sites like these.

I personally prefer lowcostholidays. They look much nicer than Travelrepublic. I've travelled with both and didn't have amy troubles either way although the customer service for TravelRepublic was diabolical when I wanted to enquire about my return trip.

I went to Majorca in June with lowcostholidays. They had the best price and their transfers were brilliant. Bus broke down but they sorted it immediately. I wouldn't recommend on the beach. I haven't used them as I don't understand their website but a couple of friends have and tehy had disaster trips with awful accommodation.

Hope that helps!

Do not book with this company!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I booked a three day weekend stay in Pairs from the 25th to the 27th of Sept 2009 via www.lowcostholidays.com. I emailed the hotel about a week before we were meant to check in just to make sure they had our booking and the hotel said that they had not received a booking from lowcostholidays.com. I emailed lowcostholidays.com which was ignored; I then spent hours on the phone trying to get someone on the phone to find out exactly what was going on. I finally managed to speak to a rep who told me that the hotel had been booked and we should just go and check in using the vouchers.

We arrived at the hotel in Paris and presented the vouchers to the front desk, the hotel had not received any such booking. The hotel manager tried to call the rep for lowcostholidays.com, when the hotel manager got thought to the rep the rep kept hanging up on the manager whenever he was asked a question about when the funds would reach the hotel. We were left waiting for ages and were then told that the hotel taxes had not been paid for, so we had to pay if we wanted to check in.

Will never book with lowcostholidays.com again!!!!

hi angelicdisgrace35,

both low cost holidays and travel republic are safe sites, i booked a holiday with low cost holidays and had a great time, they were very helpful.

In response to what superstargirl said i found the same post on another topic board, i will leave my response here as well so you dont have to find it!

'My husband and I used low cost holidays to book our holiday for our 10 year anniversary. We spent a week in Lanzarote and had a great time. We had no problems what so ever and because we dont have a home email they sent us our tickets via the post first class! we phoned them up a week before our holiday to make sure everything was still ok, as it was our first time travelling for a while and there was a bit of a wait on the phone but once we got through they were very nice and helpful.'

hope this helps and have a great holiday.

lowcostholdays have deducted the full cost of a holiday from my bank account - I only paid a deposit and, disturbingly, their records reflect this.

My online bank account, however, clearly shows that they've taken the full cost of my holiday. Their after sales service has proven to be dire - no reply to an email sent 2 days ago and on the phone they are unwilling to help unless I can provide hard copy evidence of their error (even though their bank statement will clearly show them how much they've taken from me).

Also beware their 'hidden' charges - debit and credit card fees, admin fee and after sales phone line costs.

is travel republic safe to book with

If you opt to go with either the basic guidelines of safety are 1. Make sure they are ABTA and ATOL bonded

2.you have adequate insurance

3.and if you feel necessary pay on a c/c for extra protection.

This post was determined to be inappropriate by the Tripadvisor community and has been removed.

I have used both of theese sites a few times they are both fine. julie

Well I booked with Travel republic and went to Tunisia in Oct/Nov, I had no problems and had a fantastic holiday but I have booked with low-cost holidays for New Year and it has just been hassle from the minute go!

1....no email sent to confirm, after spending an hour and half on hold I find that they haven't sent the email because the tickets failed......booked tickets and received email.

2...Check bank account to find they took more money than specified, another hour on phone only to be cut off by them! Start leaving messages on their facebook profile page and what do you know they contact me and yes for some strange reason they did take too much on my card????? The girl I'm talking to is very on the ball and sorts out everything in a flash! I'm happy with the service I got in the end.

I can't believe they don't have an email address you can contact them on and you have to sit on hold for ages at 10p a minute! This really is unacceptable I have spent a bomb on phone calls to them...to sort out their mistakes!

I'm booking with Travel Republic next time and every time from now on.

Hem! All a little unsettling. I booked a week ago for a week to Sharm and the transaction went through twice! I spoke to them (based in India) and they assured me that only one payment would be taken. Needless to say, both payments went through so I spoke to them again and they had trouble finding my earlier conversation but assured me that a credit had already been put through. I spoke to my bank again and they said no credit was showing but thankfully, as I have cover for unauthorised transactions this will be credited by my bank anyway.

My advice: Avoid like the plague. Why save a few quid and then worry whether your holiday is booked properly. Also, I have spent some time trying to find out if this company is registered in the UK or not. They have an office in East Grinstead. This is from their website:

"Customer Relations

lowcostholidays.com is a trading name of Lowcostbeds.com, which is registered in England no 4371920"

So who the hell are Lowcostbeds???

I will be checking with ABTA and ATOL with whom they say they are registered.

Is Anyone in Charge of Making Your Airbnb or Other Rental Safe?

Aviation safety is constantly under public scrutiny. When the door flew off a Boeing 737 in January, it made headlines for months. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill giving the Federal Aviation Administration $105 billion to hire more air traffic controllers, improve runway safety and even train flight attendants in self-defense.

Yet the safety of short-term rentals, available on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo , receives far less attention.

When a fire at an illegal Airbnb rental in Montreal killed seven people last year, it was primarily local news. Social media is filled with tips for improving the safety of a rental — such as checking for hidden cameras — yet it’s difficult to know whether these address real or imagined threats. That’s partly because no regulatory agency oversees the safety of short-term rentals.

A safety Wild West

“Imagine if Delta Air Lines said you have to bring your own oxygen tank — you’d say, 'No way, I’m not getting on there,'” says Justin Ford, the director of short-term rental safety and certification programs at Breezeway, a property operations platform for short-term rental property managers. “Yet people are saying you should bring your own carbon monoxide alarm to a rental. We, as an industry, should be embarrassed by that.”

Airbnb insists the problem is minor.

“With over 1.5 billion guest arrivals to 220 countries and regions, safety issues on Airbnb are incredibly rare,” an Airbnb spokesperson said in an email. “We are committed to helping our global community travel and host safely on the platform. We continually invest in these efforts, including through dedicated policies, resources for hosts and guests, and support like our 24-hour safety line, and we partner with experts to help inform our work.”

Yet the scope of the problem is difficult to assess. These rentals remain largely unregulated, stymying efforts to track and report incidents. And, unlike aviation safety, there is no clear party responsible for maintaining the safety of short-term rentals . Is it the hosts? Or the platform? Or local governments?

As it turns out, nobody really knows.

Slips, trips and gas leaks

The heat was off when Jack Epner checked into an Airbnb in Spain, so he messaged the host about turning it on. The host said the heater had a potential safety issue and was reluctant to turn it on due to her “fear of the house exploding.”

“Her 'solution' was to give me a giant tank of butane for my bedroom — a giant tank of flammable gas that I could smell leaking,” Epner, who is nomadic, explained in an email.

The experience soured him on the short-term rental platform.

“I simply don't want to deal with them ever again,” Epner said.

Some experts say safety issues at short-term rentals are not usually this dramatic.

Ford, the safety expert, says, “83% of issues are due to slips, trips and falls. That’s where we’re seeing the injuries happening.”

According to Ford, improper lighting, missing handrails and even area rugs can cause accidents. He says that hosts can enhance safety by improving these features in their rentals, but that the real problem lies in the lack of safety standards across the industry.

“The big challenge is that there are standards for most commercial properties, but a lot of those standards don’t extend to short-term rentals,” Ford says. He adds that this is true "in about 95% of locations."

Who’s in charge here?

Some local governments have tried to require safety inspections for short-term rentals.

The city of Portland, Oregon, requires basic safety requirements for rentals, such as a working smoke detector and bedrooms that are up to code. Yet, as part of the city’s struggles to enforce its short-term rental regulations , it has inspected only 14 properties since 2019.

“Resources and permit fee costs act as inspection limitations,” Robert B. Layne II, senior communication coordinator for the city of Portland’s Bureau of Development Services, said in an email, explaining why so few properties have received these basic safety checks. The fees for registering a property would have to be drastically increased to cover inspection costs.

And while short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo offer safety guidelines for hosts, they have shied away from mandating inspections.

“Airbnb banned cameras in their properties,” Ford says. “Why can they do that but not require a deck inspection? They’re being selective in what they do.”

It’s a game of kick the can involving safety, with nobody — hosts, platforms or local governments — taking full responsibility. Ford says another group may need to step up to improve guest safety.

“The insurance companies need to stand up more and demand changes,” Ford says, suggesting that short-term rentals are getting harder to insure and that safety inspections could impact hosts’ bottom line if insurers demand them.

How to stay safe

Airbnb and Vrbo show which safety features, including carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers, are included in each property. Safety-minded guests can filter results by those that contain these features.

Guests should remain aware of the unregulated nature of these rentals and seek properties managed by professional hosts, according to Ford. Messaging potential hosts and asking about basic safety information is a good way to determine how seriously they take guest safety. Ask about:

Fire alarm batteries.

Deck inspections.

Pool fences.

Bunk bed railings.

And Ford suggests that guests with families talk to their children about potential hazards, especially with swimming pools.

“We’ve seen a lot of pool drownings lately,” Ford says. “We need to have these discussions with our children about pools.”

Note: Because of an editing error, Breezeway was originally noted as an online communication platform for short-term rental property managers. It is a property operations platform. The article has been updated to reflect this change.
