Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

8 Ways to Choose the Perfect Tour Company

Last Updated: November 3, 2023

tour group posing with Nomadic Matt during a hike in the hills

That idea of tours being bad is an old and outdated perception.

These days tour groups have become more adept at the changing landscape. They feature smaller groups, more authentic experiences, a better environmental impact, and more local guides.

I love group tours.

Even though I am an independent traveler, I find group tours super fun, a great way to meet people, learn more from an informed guide, go to places you normally can’t, and wet your feet in travel. My first trip overseas was on an organized tour. I didn’t know the first thing about travel and that tour gave me the confidence to travel on my own. It was the taste test I needed to become hooked on travel. Tours give a lot of people time to adjust to the “travel lifestyle.”

Unlike in the past, today’s tours are eco-friendly, cater to all travel styles, over cheap, and make a point to use local transportation and guides. And many destinations (like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands, the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!

In this article, I am going to tell you how to find the best tour company so you get one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community:

1. Research the costs

With tour companies, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for. Many tour companies nickel-and-dime you, while some are really good at maximizing value for your every penny. Ask how your money is spent to find out if you are really getting the best value for your money. How much of your fee is their overhead? Are you paying for top-notch hotels but staying in two-star guesthouses? You want a company that is transparent with why prices are the way they are.

Moreover, make sure you ask if there are added fees to pay when arrive. Many companies require you to pay additional money when the tour starts or don’t include park or attraction entrance fees. That cheap tour won’t be so cheap if you have to pay for everything while you’re there!

2. Make sure you are the audience

Is the tour geared toward older couples? Young people? Families? You don’t want to end up on a loud Contiki tour full of drunk twenty-year-olds when all you want is a quiet holiday.

There’s a tour company for everyone — just make sure you don’t end up on one that isn’t yours. Most tour companies list their guest demographics on their “About” page, and you can usually see from the photos of their tours who goes on it.

You can also tell the audience based on accommodation: if it’s hostels or guesthouses, it’s usually for backpackers and budget travelers; if it’s fancy digs, it’s for older travelers and families.

This is very important because these are the people you’ll be traveling with so you want to make sure it’s the kind of people you are traveling with. I’m still friends with the people from my first tour in 2003 because they were people like me. The tour in Japan that was filled with older families? Not so much. We didn’t have much in common. Wonderful people but we didn’t connect.

So, I always look for tours that have my demographic in them.

3. Get local guides

Guides can make or break your trip. They are going to explain everything to you and keep the flow of the tour going. I don’t want them hiring some young kid, non-expert, or someone who doesn’t know the place well. I’ve been on tours where the guide was a walking encyclopedia, and on somewhere the guide was a glorified timekeeper.

Make sure the company uses knowledgeable, local guides. The guide should be a local or at least a long-term resident, know the local language, have travel experience, and know life-saving techniques.

If you are unsure about the guides, call the customer service line and ask them about their guides.

4. Safety record

Make sure the company follows all the proper safety requirements and is accredited by the local government, the government where they are registered, and any other appropriate trade organizations.

5. A balanced schedule

You’re paying for them to fill most of your day. How do they do that? Are they doing that? Do they have a lot of activities organized, or do they leave you to your own devices?

That said, you don’t want a schedule that is crammed with things to do. Make sure you get a schedule of all the activities and pick a tour that is balanced. Running around will leave you wishing you had a holiday from your holiday, but you don’t want to be sitting around all day, either.

I love taking small group tours because they generally have a good balance. Any tour that requires you to be on a huge bus and hits 6 cities in 5 days is not a tour to take!

6. Environmental impact

There’s a growing trend among travelers called ecotourism . It’s about more responsible travel, not only toward the environment but also toward the locals in an area. This means using local guides, hotels, and services, and making sure to reduce waste and your footprint on the local habitat.

Moreover, these companies tend to offer better and more interactive tours that also give you a good degree of autonomy.

I think it’s important to pick a company that provides great value and gives back to the place you are visiting. After all, did you go there to ruin it for others? Doubtful.

Check with groups like the International Ecotourism Society for a list of companies that have been certified “eco-friendly.” With so much money pouring into the industry now, you have a lot of companies fraudulently saying they practice ecotourism but end up being involved in terrible labor practices, animal abuse, and waste.

7. Group size

Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don’t like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them. However, I have friends who love Contiki tours with 40-50 people. Know what you are getting yourself into, so you don’t find yourself with a group too small or too large for your tastes.

Just remember larger groups tend to stay at bigger, more impersonal accommodations (they can only accommodate the numbers), eat at more touristy restaurants, and tend to travel to more destinations quicker.

In my expert opinion, small group tours are the best.

8. Check their reputation

How have other travelers enjoyed their time? Look for online reviews to see what a company’s reputation is. It might not always be what they claim, and it’s important to find out the truth before you book.

Remember that MOST people only write a review if something goes wrong. Someone might give a tour company one star just because their eggs were runny. Find the average. Someone might hate a tour because the weather was hot. Seriously. These are actual negative reviews from the tour operator company, Thomas Cook:

“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

“We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

So how can you trust the reviews you read online?

Take them with a grain of salt. You can read reviews on websites TrustPilot . The approval rating should look like a bell curve but with more A’s and B’s than C’s. I look for companies that average 85% or higher (or 4 out of 5 stars). If a company is that highly rated, the negative reviews are probably just outliers.

My Recommended (Best) Tour Companies

Here are some of my favorite small, day-tour, or backpacker bus tour companies:

  • Take Walks – This is my favorite walking tour company. They run a wide variety of insightful and entertaining tours around Europe and the US. What makes them so good is they get you inside access to attractions and places you can’t get elsewhere. Their guides rock too!
  • Get Your Guide – A massive marketplace for tours, activities, and excursions. If you’re looking for something niche, you’ll find it here!
  • Devour Food Tours – My go-to tour company for tasty food tours around Europe and the US.
  • Kiwi Experience – A hop-on, hop-off bus tour company in New Zealand for backpackers!
  • Baz Bus – A hop on, hop off again bus tour company in South Africa for all travelers.
  • New Europe – Free walking tours throughout Europe.
  • Free Tours By Foot – Pay-what-you-like tours throughout Europe and the United States. They are one of my favorite free walking tour companies in the world!

THE #1 COMPANY FOR MULTI-DAY SMALL GROUP TOURS

When it comes to multi-day, multi-week tours (think trips through Morocco, sailing in the Galápagos, etc.), I highly recommend using Intrepid Travel .

Intrepid is my favorite and best small group tour operator out there! I really love their guides, their small groups, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and their commitment to the local environment and community. I always have an incredible time on their tours. They are my favorite multi-day tour operator and the only one I use now (the picture at the top of this page is me on their Patagonia trip). Intrepid is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, doesn’t rush their tours, and are quite inexpensive. I don’t even consider anyone else when it comes to multi-day trips.

I love tours. They are a great way to meet people, get a local to add value and knowledge, and see places you can’t get to alone! I don’t take them often but I do take them. And, since I follow the above rules, I always have a good time. Some of my favorite travel memories were when I was on a group trip. If you follow my tips above, you’ll never go wrong either.

A Perfect Circle Announce American Tour

Live reviews

I went to A Perfect Circle last night totally prepared for them to be crap, and the new album stuff to fall completely flat, and, well, none of that happened. At all.

The new stuff just completely clicks live - the likes of Disillusioned and The Contrarian sound just as epic and lush as anything on any of the other albums - and the older stuff sounds phenomenal. It doesn’t hurt that Maynard seems far more engaged and interactive than he historically has with Tool, and the lightshow is absolutely breathtaking.

Starting at 9pm, the set scraped two hours (no encore - they didn’t need one) and covered a range of tracks from all the albums, heavy on the new one of course, but a representative set. I'm writing this before the second night, but I wouldn't be surprised if tonight's set has a few differences.

The only bone of contention for a lot of punters was the we-mean-it zero photos policy. Even taking your phone out in the auditorium got a torch shone at you, as a few unfortunates discovered, and, well, it was rather wonderful.

I wasn’t expecting quite what a huge difference it makes, or quite how distracting phone screens are, as they’re now just part of the furniture. An uninterrupted view of the performance over the heads of the crowd just made me remember how things used to be, and it was an actual relief to be separated from the insidious little voice telling me I must capture this moment rather than just experience it.

And what a performance it was. Looking forward to seeing them again tonight. :)

This was my first time seeing APC as well as my first concert at the Peterson Events Center, so this review will cover both.

The Peterson Event center is a pretty good venue, it is basically a smaller PPG Paints Arena (formerly Consol Energy Center). I had floor seats near the back and could see and hear everything fine. The lights, curtains, props, and audio were all on point, though the screens were smaller and longer than most Pittsburgh venues. I prefer bigger and wider screens, but it didn't hamper things to much.

The Beta Machine opened up, and they sounded pretty good. I like BM well enough, and they are a fitting opening act for APC, but like everyone else there I came for APC. BM played for about half an hour, all songs from their debut EP.

Having seen one of Maynard's other bands (Puscifer, not Tool yet unfortunately), and having listed to the Stone and Echo album I was expecting APC to sound very good live, which they did. Near studio quality throughout. They played all the songs you would expect ("Weak and Powerless", "The Outsider", "Blue", "The Noose", "Magdalena", "Count Bodies...", etc.). They also played a few covers from eMOTIVE, namely "Imagine" and "People are People". I was hoping they would play some brand new music, which they did ("By and Down" their latest released song, as well as "Feathers", "HourGlass", and "The Doomed" from their upcoming album). The concert lasted about an hour and a half. Light on banter and theatrics and heavy on substance. Overall, it was a good concert.

If you like your music heavy, riff-driven and moody as a sulky teenager, you may already be a fan of A Perfect Circle. The dark rock/ metal/ grunge 'supergroup' formed back in 1999 as the brainchild of guitarist and Nine Inch Nails producer Billy Howerdel and Tool singer Maynard James Keenan- one of the most influential, affecting and recognisable vocalists in rock music today. A Perfect Circle broke records for the fastest-selling debut ever with their multi-platinum 'Mer De Noms' in 2000, and the sheer clout of their musical prowess is clear from their live shows as well as on record. So much so in fact, that they have released two live DVDs, as well as selling out stadium tours all over the world.

Over the past decade or so, the band, having undergone a few line-up changes and a long hiatus, are back to touring after releasing a greatest hits album, 'Three Sixty', last year. Fans can rest easy (or mosh out in delight) knowing that they are still as powerful a live act as ever, with Maynard's cleanly haunting vocals over heavy guitar shredding as awesome as when they first began. When I saw them in 2011 at an intimate venue in Columbia, Maryland, they also changed up the arrangements of a few songs from their album versions, such as the opener 'Annihilation' and the thundercloud-worthy 'Outsider'- keeping their set fresh, original and as awesome as can be. If you manage to catch these guys live, you won't be disappointed!

The Billy Howerdel/Caduceus Cellars tour was amazing. We had an in stage tour with Billy, he explained a lot about the stage set up in great detail, he played guitar for us directly infront of me, and I got to ask him the first of three questions (which I believe I received the most complex answer to the most sincere of the three questions)..

The wine tasting I did not take part in, unfortunately, as I do not drink alcohol nor use drugs (synonymous)..

The show was awesome!

Stellar, in fact, out of this world.

Hadn't seen the band live, since their Greek Theater Cinquanta show for Maynard's 50th birthday bash, and before that since their 2011 tour.

The VIP only merchandise was stellar, as well, and I even scored a bunch of other merch items, at the regular merch booth, to include a second separate signed beautiful poster in very limited quantities.

They played their newer track "By and Down" from 2011, as well as three HIGHLY evolved brand new tracks.

Live music events like these are the purist form of therapy that I've ever discovered, and I am still riding on its high..

Stellar fucking show!

Thank you, Billy, James, Matt, Jeff, and last but certainly not least, M J Keenan.

I had the time of my fucking life, brothers!

Peace, love, and happiness to you all!

With much love and appreciation,

David D Corley. \m/

Saw them for the first time, was really excited. Although the concert was great and the lightshow was really theatralic and aligned great with their music / style, i was a bit annoyed that maynard kept repeating "put away your phones, and we will continue playing" a couple of times with some kind of arrogance. Kinda killed my mood. I know hes not into smartphones and surveillance and all that stuff, and its good dont get me wrong, however i think its not appropiate to "teach the mass a lesson" when youre some kind of rockstar, playing in front of thousands and charging a whooping 70€+ for a ticket. I mean i couldnt even spot more than one or two smartphones, but we were standing quite close to the stage..

Also i dont quite understand the benefit of grabbing a LP of the new album for 35€ while you can order it for 25€. I would like to be able to buy some of Maynards wine haha, because shipping to europe is way too expensive.

However, music was great (besides not playing judith, maaaan), that bald guitarist was super hype and made up for the bad mood maynard spreaded before (he was ill too, maybe i just caught him on a bad day/concert). Not sure if i would go again though.

Maynard doesn't disappoint and neither did A Perfect Circle. And they played my favorite, favorite song….By and down!! Some people were pissed about the no photo/no recording policy. However if you follow Maynard, you would know that it has been this way and that it's been a no recording/no photo policy for the past 25 yrs with Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle. So this is nothing new for gigs involving Maynard. Maynard and the band feels it's disrespectful for other concert goers to have to deal with someone in front of them recording or constantly snapping photos. He wants the audience to unplug and enjoy the ride, to be present and to be in the moment. Honestly....it was nice to not have to see cell phones out everywhere or in my direct view of the stage. Too many times at concerts, I've dealt with the person in front of me and their phone, out the entire time of the show....where I'm actually having to watch the concert through their cell phone, cuz it's in my range of view for the show.

A memorable evening with so many feels and so much love. My heart is full. Thank you APC <3 <3 <3

Openers were ok. Tricky instrumentals over powered vocals, but was happy to see them non the less.

O. Tight sound! Set list covered all the favorites. Lighting was colorful on the simple back set. I Love A Perfect Circle!

At the Honda Center, Anaheim: VERY STRICT on no cell policy! Every where you turned lighted signs and signs taped to chairs on floor. They meant business. Cops and increased security to enforce. I was sitting front rower to floor & witnessed people being kicked out before the show and during for taking selfies. One guy was cuffed for taking his shirt off and dancing too crazy. The crowd control was gastapo. Very tame crowd.

Absolutely must see... If you get the chance. The band performed so many good songs, old and new. I love that about them. This is only my second time seeing them live but I've been a fan from the beginning. During the entirety of the concert, at the artists request, there was a no cell phone policy. It was so nice to be able to just enjoy the music and people and environment! Everyone on the same wavelength, it was overwhelming and I found myself crying throughout the first few songs. I loved the visual effects they used throughout the show. Definitely one to see before they're gone...

The same great sound and voice’s as on the cd. Loved the show only when Maynard told us to pull out our camera’s on the end of the show....he quickly left the stage so missed him for a good pic ...the smart ass I know he like to ceep away from the lights like a vampire but his voice did not change trough the years. Also Thanks to the other great menbers of this band.

Great numbers and in june I will see them with the band TOOL.

Also CHELSEA WOLF gave a great performance.

Thanks to AFAS for gettting them in had a fantastic evening. ❤️❤️❤️

jacqueline-de-vos’s profile image

The band was great, everything you could hope or want from them. The venue was the opposite. The Hollywood Bowl is a terrible venue, I will never go back. Waited in line for 45 minutes to buy a $13 12oz IPA. All concession stands were packed, and the workers could care less. It was like being at Disneyland when at capacity. So stressful, missed two opening acts, walking to my seat as headliner started.

Never, ever again. I'd rather drive to San Diego or Las Vegas to see a band I like when on tour than go to this outdated venue.

Ramzi Boukhiam on His Near-Perfect Teahupo’o Barrel and Preparing for the Olympics

i am perfect tour

Ramzi, on his way to a lengend-making heat win. Photo: WSL

The Inertia

If Ramzi Boukhiam wasn’t on your radar ahead of the Paris Olympics, he better be now. While many pro surfers struggle to navigate the world’s most infamous lefthand tube, Ramzi showed that, to the contrary, he thrives in the consequential conditions. His third-place finish at last month’s Tahiti Pro was the best of his career as he wowed with an impossibly deep, “probably-should-have-been-a-10” tube worth 9.80 points. I can assure you that his Olympic competitors were paying close attention.

A few weeks later Ramzi finds himself on the shores of Sao Paulo, Brazil, hanging out with his close buddy Gabriel Medina as they prepare for the Saquarema Championship Tour stop. But that historic moment, Ramzi’s coming out party at Teahupo’o, should not be quickly forgotten. It may be a precursor for what is to come. I gave Ramzi a ring to go over that performance, get his thoughts on the wave and the score, and hear where his headspace is at as he aims to bring an Olympic medal back to Morocco.

Before the Tahiti Pro, especially with the looming swell on the forecast, did you feel like you could get a really good result?

Kind of. It was my first time competing there, but I’ve surfed Chopes a few times before. I don’t have crazy experience there, but it’s a place I really like. Tikanui Smith stayed with me for the event and he’s like my brother from Tahiti, really, really close. So it was just me and him, we rented this little bungalow at the “End of the Road.” We were in a really good Tahitian vibe, surfing and fishing. I just put myself into a nice state of mind. And when I saw that swell I was happy. That’s what you want – big Chopes with the best in the world. That’s pretty much the dream.

Let’s go back to that quarter final with Kelly and that nearly perfect wave. How was that experience?

It felt pretty good. It was maybe the best moment of my career. I needed a big score because I kept making the wrong choices from the start of the heat, going on the wrong waves. And Kelly kept getting the best waves behind me, doing Kelly things. But then I was like, okay, I need a 9. So I wanted a big one. Then this wave came. It wasn’t a big one, but I was really, really deep. When I took off, I looked at it and I was thinking I was too deep. But then I pumped, made it through, and was stoked. I thought it had to be a 10. That was crazy.

Were you surprised that it wasn’t a 10?

I mean, kind of. But in the moment, I was like, okay, whatever, I won. That was the most important part. But I felt like it was a 10 because I was really deep.

When you were on the foam ball, did you ever think, I’m not going to make it?

Yeah for sure. I almost fell three times, but I held on and I guess it just sent me out. I knew I just made a hard barrel, so I was pretty stoked.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ramzi Boukhiam (@ramziboukhiam)

Were you happy with the third place result? Or were you disappointed that you didn’t make it to the final?

My semi against Italo was really slow. I just needed a six on those last two waves, but I was a little too deep. It was reachable. I really thought I was gonna go to the final, and who knows, maybe win. But it is what it is. Given it was my first time (competing) at Chopes, it’s a good result.

So now that you got that result at Teahupo’o, how does that affect your confidence level heading into the Olympics?

I feel confident. I like these waves. And, of course, it boosted my confidence getting third on the CT because it was pretty much against the surfers that are going to be at the Olympics. I really wanted to make this Olympics because, while Japan was nice, this is more the type of wave I like – the waves that scare me. I like the challenge. I just hope it’s big and nice so we can really send it.

What’s your training program? Are you going to go back to Tahiti before the Olympics?

I’ll do the Brazil CT, then I go home for maybe 10 days where I’ll do some training and physio. Then I’ll go to Tahiti maybe seven days before the Olympics.

What has been the biggest lesson learned thus far throughout your first year on the CT?

The thing that I struggled the most with is the lay days. Sometimes you get into a rhythm, you make a few heats, and then it goes into five lay days. It’s hard to keep the momentum. That was the hardest part to adapt to. So I’m going to learn from that for next year. I need to be able to stay in the moment. For example, in Portugal I had a pretty nice day. I made two heats. I was in the quarters. I wanted them to run the next day, but then it went into five lay days. When they reran the comp, I was off. I didn’t have my momentum.

Only the best. We promise.

Beyond (Division 81 Records)

Contact Sam McAllister about I AM

  • Isaiah Collier
  • Michael Shekwoaga Ode
  • Division 81 Bandcamp

I AM –  the duo of Isaiah Collier on woodwinds and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums – release a new single/video, “ Bend Of The Universe (Trust With All Your Heart) ,” from their new album Beyond , out June 10th on Division 81 . Throughout “Bend of the Universe (Trust With All Your Heart),” Collier and Ode take a deeper look within to reflect and gather before a full-on vortex occurs; the colorful swirling of sounds propelled by Collier’s breath control and full expression, with Ode responding in kind with his rare ability to present the abstract groove for the next phase of this journey.

Partly inspired by a solo exchange between the duo during the 5th movement of Collier’s acclaimed 2021 release, Cosmic Transitions , entitled “Mercury’s Retrograde,” Beyond finds both Collier and Ode searching deep within their individual spiritual consciousness to communicate the understanding that there is something “beyond” the limitations of the physical world and the understandings of everyday life. “ The one focus of this album is to take the listener on a journey that is rare, uncompromising to any understanding other than the desire to tap into the higher forces in the universe and deliver that message to the world ,” says Sonny Daze , the album’s producer. Recorded entirely in one take in the dead-of-night on June 23rd, 2021 in Studio 5 at the Chicago Recording Company, Beyond is informed by the presence of poet/sound healer Jimmy Chan , who attended the session with a gong, Tibetan singing bowls and a crystal didgeridoo to conjure trance state transcendency. Sans headphones, surely sacrilegious for a shaman, he began his invocation as Collier blew Hulusi flute, then piping sopranino. Daze burned a red light in the studio, a cauldron of incense, a bushel of sage, smoke to infuse and transport. Barely baffled, Collier and Ode battled it out face-to-face.

At 23-years-old, Collier has “transcended the realm of prodigy” (DownBeat), quickly becoming a tour-de-force in the Chicago and Brooklyn music scenes. Ode and Collier first met  when Ode backed the saxophonist for his audition at Oberlin. “ Isaiah was so good I insisted to the professors in attendance he should be given a full ride! ” recalled Ode. Ultimately Collier studied at the Brubeck Institute in LA but he didn’t forget his first meeting with Ode, either. Ode’s Nigerian parents bought him his first drum kit when he was 2, a red-and-orange Rockstar affair with paper heads.  That was a church engagement supplying backbeats for a choral rendition of “Lord, I Lift Your Name On High,” and deep faith is further cement between he and Collier, locking their musical simpatico with unquestionable clarity of purpose: “ Our relationship with God definitely set us on our path, we’re here to cultivate and build, uplift people .” John Coltrane’s burning light illuminates the duo too. They share fervor for such later Coltrane explorations as “Meditations” and the posthumously released “Transition.”

I AM NOT YOUR PERFECT MEXICAN DAUGHTER Audio Adaptation Announced

Featuring a new soundscape by sound designer Matthew Chapman, the majority of the original cast is returning for the new 90-minute incarnation.

pixeltracker

Now streaming in more than 500 cities, 50 states and 20 countries, the Steppenwolf NOW virtual stage is continuing to bring Chicago theater to a global audience. Steppenwolf has announced a new offering joining the virtual lineup-the world premiere audio adaptation of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, based on the book by Erika L. Sánchez and adapted for audio from the stage play by acclaimed playwright Isaac Gómez and co-directed by ensemble members Sandra Marquez and Audrey Francis . A Chicago story about family, community and coming together even when that feels impossible, this New York Times bestselling novel is written in the first-person narrative, which translates beautifully into a deeply personal, journal-like audio experience.

Last March 2020, the sold-out Steppenwolf for Young Adults' world premiere stage production of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter was cut short due to the pandemic. While the theater had planned to remount the acclaimed production on the mainstage this winter, in light of ongoing health concerns surrounding COVID-19, Isaac Gómez embraced the opportunity to revisit this beloved work in a new audio format for Steppenwolf's global audience.

Featuring a new soundscape by sound designer Matthew Chapman, the majority of the original cast-including ensemble member Karen Rodriguez who awed in the role of Julia Reyes-returns to develop, rehearse and record this exciting new 90-minute incarnation.

"While we cannot ignore our disappointment at not being able to remount the stage production, there is great joy in the opportunity to share this poignant story with our growing global community. Told in first-person narrative, I cannot think of a better work to reimagine as an audio adaptation with protagonist Julia-played by the incomparable Karen Rodriguez -sharing her innermost thoughts directly into the listener's ear," shares Artistic Director Anna D. Shapiro .

Steppenwolf Education continues its remarkable work by bringing this audio experience into classrooms worldwide for FREE paired with interactive educational materials for virtual learning. Streaming begins April 26, 2021 (available for students 8th grade and older). Teachers can register their students now at this link .

The production will be available in Spanish and English closed captions, American Sign Language interpretation and copies of the script in Spanish and English will be easily accessible. A series of free virtual events to help students engage more deeply with this offering will be shared once streaming begins. steppenwolf.org/mexicandaugtherSYA.

"In this new innovative format, our virtual members are brought closer to Steppenwolf's mainstage work and Steppenwolf Education once again delivers an invaluable learning experience for students everywhere," shares Executive Director E. Brooke Flanagan .

This past fall Steppenwolf Education's audio production of George Orwell 's Animal Farm reached more than 25,000 students across the globe. Since March 2020, Steppenwolf Education has produced dozens of free virtual workshops, which can be accessed steppenwolf.org/virtualsteped .

Isaac Gómez is an award-winning Chicago-based playwright, originally from El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. This will be Gómez's fourth experience adapting one of his works to audio this year. In 2018, Steppenwolf presented his critically acclaimed work, La Ruta directed by ensemble member Sandra Marquez with an all-female Latinx cast. He is the recipient of the 2018 Dramatists Guild Lanford Wilson Award and the 2017 Jeffry Melnick New Playwright Award.

Steppenwolf NOW Lineup Updates

The Steppenwolf NOW virtual stage was originally announced with six productions total with the final production to be a live film capture of Ages of Moon. Filming was scheduled to begin in Los Angeles this month; however, with the ongoing health and safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, especially given the crisis situation in Los Angeles, the production will not be moving forward.

Currently three productions are available on the virtual stage with the remaining three productions to be Duchess! Duchess! Duchess! (streaming begins March 10); Where We Stand (to be released in April 2021): and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (released early Summer 2021). Full lineup & details below.

Get access with a virtual membership, which includes all six productions for $75 total (discounted $50 virtual memberships available to essential workers, artists, students and teachers). Made in Chicago and available to stream anytime, anywhere. More info at steppenwolf.org/now . Press are welcome to review; email Madeline Long at [email protected] to RSVP to the virtual stage.

Author of the novel Erika L. Sánchez has created an indelible protagonist in student Julia Reyes, who searches for her truest self while navigating the struggles of adolescence-depression, grief, self-doubt-in addition to the anxieties unique to a child of immigrants with a foot in two very different worlds. Julia is torn between a future limited by the same socioeconomic forces that curtail the opportunities open to her parents and her fervent ambitions to seek a more expansive life for herself as a writer.
