Georgia state on map, about hunting in georgia state.

Hunting is a big deal in the American South, and the state of Georgia, with nearly 630,000 hunters, is no exception. With a mix of private lands as well as 104 Wildlife Management Areas, Georgia has plenty of room for wildlife and hunters alike. With a humid, subtropical climate and has large areas of swampland as well and forests consisting of pine, oak, cypress, red cedar, and hickory. Game species include white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, alligators, feral hogs, small game, doves, and waterfowl. The deer population in Georgia exceeds 1.2 million. They are found statewide, with the best deer habitat in the Georgia Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain regions. Baiting is allowed in the southern portion of the state, but not in the northern. Biologists estimate that there is a healthy population of about 5,100 black bears statewide. Bear hunting is in the fall only, and allowable methods of take vary by region. Eastern wild turkeys flock throughout Georgia in staggering numbers; latest estimates peg the population at some 400,000 birds. The state is plagued with feral hogs, and licensed hunters can take an unlimited number in most areas. Perhaps Georgia’s most unusual hunting opportunity is for alligators. A limited number of tags are available through an application process, and hunters who are successful in drawing an alligator tag may hunt them day or night using ropes or snares, snatch hooks, harpoons, gigs, or arrows with a restraining line attached. During the firearm deer season in Georgia, all deer, bear and feral hog hunters must wear at least 500 square inches of blaze orange on outer garments, above the waist. Deer Hunting Georgia  2024/2025 Hunting Season Dates

Hunting in Georgia is perfect for a successful deer hunting trip. The southeastern united states offer favorable hunting land due to its fertile soil and the numerous farming communities. Georgia offers some of the best whitetail deer hunting, as well as some of the finest hunting plantations in the country. Middle Georgia, in particular, produces many of the state’s top trophy whitetail deer.  Deer hunting packages are four days in length and are semi-guided. In some cases, a less experienced hunter may want to seek a full-time hunting guide. At Gray Ghost Plantation, we can easily arrange this for you at the time of booking.

Top Georgia Deer Hunting Plantation

While there are many hunting outfitters in Georgia, we offer a more one-on-one experience than other deer hunting plantations in Georgia. The deer hunting season in Georgia starts September 9th for Bow hunting season in Georgia and runs through January 14th . On the other hand, Muzzleloader season in Georgia runs from October 14 -October 20th, while rifle season runs from October 21 through January 14th . Dates may vary year to year, but we’ll help you arrange the perfect time when you contact us.

For bow hunters that want to get an early start on the Hunting season, Gray Ghost Plantation has great bow hunting opportunities early in the season. Bow hunting is a great way to do some early season deer hunting in Georgia. We are a family-owned hunting outfitter in Georgia. Our deer hunting plantation in Georgia is 1200 acres composed of a mixture of hardwoods, planted pines, and cleared or thinned areas. All of our lands are in one section, and our property is owned, not leased.

Our Deer Hunting Process

We utilize deer hunting blinds for our fall Whitetail Deer Hunts, such as elevated shooting houses and metal ladder stands. Also, we allow you to bring your climbing stands if you prefer. We are very safety conscious and conduct a safety meeting before all of our Whitetail hunts in Georgia begin. All deer hunters must bring a hunter orange safety vest and a safety harness before hunting on the plantation.

Our food plots are of quality for the Whitetail deer that we hunt. The food plots are maintained year-round to be an optimal food source for the deer herd. Deer feeders are also utilized year-round within the guidelines of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. We use a high protein feed that allows for maximum antler growth. Deer food plots are planted with clover, wheat, rye, soybean, and corn. This mix ensures that deer take advantage of the food we provide for them.

When harvesting a whitetail deer, we assist in the retrieval process if necessary. We’ll bring it back to the Gray Ghost Plantation hunting lodge, fit with a cleaning station set up to process your deer – with or without our assistance. Furthermore, there’s a professional processor within 15 minutes of the lodge that your deer can be processed and packaged.

Glamping Georgia: 17+ Most Unique Places To Escape

G lamping — or glamorous camping — is basically an upgrade in accommodations for those who love nature, adventure, and the great outdoors.

Whether it be in a treehouse, yurt, RV, caboose, teepee, geodesic domes, vintage airstream, or lodge , these places are for those who either want a unique sleeping experience , or lots of luxury . (Or both!)

Our list includes everything from accommodations that come with a private chef, to just a simple step up from popping your own tent with outdoor showers. Read on for some of the best glamping Georgia has to offer.

Glamping Tents at Lake Lanier and Clarks Hill Lake

The Timberline Glamping Company , formally Georgia Glamping Company, will set up a beautiful bell tent for you along the shores of Lake Lanier at Shady Grove Campground in Cumming (pictured above)!

Complete with queen and twin beds, linens, a mini fridge, heat and air, rugs, and lighting – when you think of glamping, you think of this.  And if you have family and friends that want to join you, Roxy the Retro RV is also available at Shady Grove.

We stayed with them shortly after they opened, in the tent pictured above. Since then they have grown considerably, mostly in north Georgia.

Other locations include:

  • River Forks Campground, also at Lake Lanier
  • NGCT Park in Lula, GA
  • Amicalola Falls
  • Clarks Hill near Augusta
  • Unicoi State Park
  • Kingstone Downs in Rome, GA
  • They even offer wine bungalows at Chateau Elan (for day use)

You'll find bell tents (like the one in the photo), safari tents, geo domes and the cutest retro RVs .

Luxury Glamping Tent

Located in the heart of a secluded 80 acres of pure nature near Conyers, this yurt brings you the best of camping and extravagance. It is spacious, serene, and simply exquisite for a sojourn in the wild!

Stay in a Teepee at Jacksonville North/St. Mary's KOA

For something truly unique, how about staying in a teepee at Jacksonville North/St. Mary's KOA ? Even better? It's a teepee with A/C .

The teepee sleeps four, and comes outfitted with air conditioning, a mini fridge, and two full-size beds. It would make the perfect home base for a day trip to Cumberland Island .

Treehouses at Historic Banning Mills

Live high in the trees with a stay in a treehouse at Historic Banning Mills !

Dubbed "a cozy rendition of the Swiss Family Robinson’s rooms but with all the modern conveniences," these stilted rooms in the tree canopy are accessible via a skywalk reminiscent of a short suspension bridge.

They include a king bed, gas log fireplace, jetted tub for two, private bathroom with shower, and covered back deck overlooking the Gorge . While there is only a microwave and mini fridge, your stay does include breakfast each morning at the main lodge.

Glamping with Tentrr

Georgia’s first Signature Site from Tentrr (pictured above) was located on 23 beautiful acres of farming land near Athens, GA. We loved staying at this fruit farm! Unfortunately, this particular spot has since closed, but there are now other great options in Georgia that you'll love.

Think of Tentrr as the “ AirBnB of Camping ” if you will. You reserve a designated location for as low as $99 per night, and they handle the hard parts.

Yurts at Georgia State Parks

The 10 yurts at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs offer a unique stay at the park.

The yurts here sleep 6 and have bunk beds and a futon – you provide the sleeping bags and/or linens.  They include heat, a ceiling fan, wood floors, front and back decks, and electricity.

Yurts can also be found at other Georgia State Parks too -- including High Falls, Red Top Mountain, Fort Yargo (seen above), Cloudland Canyon, Skidaway, and Tugaloo .
