Have Gun Will Travel

Florida’s HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL have a natural instinct for combining folk, pop, rock and classic country influences to create a sound all their own. “Their music has a great energy to it with infectious, sing-along choruses and refrains” remarked NPR’s Robin Hilton. American Songwriter called HGWT’s music “organic, infectious Americana Pop. Their music has a refreshing immediacy to it.” HGWT’s music has been featured in a national Chevy TV commercial, as well as the PBS series Roadtrip Nation, CBS’s The Good Wife, and Travel Channel's Expedition Unknown. Their live performances have been described as rousing, rollicking, energetic and dynamic. Accompanied by the sweeping lap steel of guitarist Scott Anderson, singer-songwriter Matt Burke enthusiastically leads brother Danny Burke (bass) and JP Beaubien (drums) through a collection of songs that run the gamut from foot-stomping front-porch spirituals and evocative Texas swing to strum-punk rave-ups, hill-country historicals and more. HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL’s highly anticipated, fifth studio album Science from an Easy Chair was recently released on THIS IS AMERICAN MUSIC. This full-length concept album is based entirely on British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 1914-16 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Produced by Shawn Kyle and recorded in Tampa, Science… delivers its own interpretation of this amazing story of survival and endurance. Along with HGWT’s own distinctive instrumentation, the musical framework of the album is rife with luscious string arrangements, crooning horn sections, and rich percussion. The release commemorates the 100th anniversary of the epic journey. Science from an Easy Chair is being called "a roots-rock opus, HGWT’s crowning master...piece" (Bucket Full Of Nails), "easily HGWT’s best" (Creative Loafing), "a phenomenal album" (alt.country.nl) and "a solid record from start to finish loaded with songs that will stand up over time" (No Depression).

Video Premiere: "Resist the Machines" by Have Gun, Will Travel

Have Gun, Will Travel have been making music on their own terms for the better part of the past two decades. 2022 sees the group set to return to form with the Silver Sounds EP, bolstered by a newfound sense of energy and renewal following a quiet two years during the global pandemic. The jangly guitars and infectious hooks these Florida folk-rockers have built their brand on still remain, but the group’s latest effort sees them diving headlong into more “rock” territory — a shift the band pulls off seamlessly.

Silver Sounds showcases the band’s new direction right out of the gates. “Buyer’s Remorse” firmly plants itself at the outset of this new release, a rollicking anthem featuring harmonica and overdriven guitars that calls out the fallacy of the American Dream, while the overt rallying cry of “Resist The Machines” is a worthy entry into the modern protest song canon with its blown-out vocals and over-the-top distorted bass and guitar work. Such rock-leaning flourishes might come as a surprise to those familiar with the band’s previous releases, but the bandmates are quick to point out that it’s really always been there in some form or another.

“We all came up playing punk rock,” singer/guitarist Matt Burke notes for any listeners who may be thrown off by these seemingly new sounds. “I feel like we’re getting back into the spirit of what we were doing when we were all kids, just playing rock and roll. It’s not nostalgia…it’s a passion and an energy that we’ve always had.”

Formed in 2007, the past decade-plus has been anything but slow for the band. Burke and his brother (bassist) Daniel, guitarist Scott Anderson, keyboardist Edward Stork, and drummer Sam Farmer amassed quite the canon of material over the years, running the gamut from foot-stomping front-porch spirituals to strum-punk rave-ups, hill-country historicals, and indie-rock anthems. They’ve seen labels come and go, toured the country multiple times over, experienced all the cliche “trials and tribulations” of making a living in independent music, and are still going strong. In fact, they’re happier in their work than ever before.

“We’re still stoked about playing music,” Burke remarks. “We’ve got a whole new energy and we can’t wait to bring it out and show it off.”

It might be easy to assume an act that’s been on the circuit this long is about ready to quietly bow out, but that simply isn’t the case for Have Gun, Will Travel. The group’s longtime drummer left the band in 2019, and by the time the band had secured a new full-timer in the position, the global pandemic had taken its toll on the music industry. Rather than calling it quits in the face of such adversity, the group doubled down — the new lineup was essentially given two years of no-pressure, camaraderie-driven rehearsals, recording, writing sessions at their home studio in Safety Harbor, Florida, as well as a handful of hyper-local live shows to test out the new material when the opportunity presented itself. Built from the ground up, Everlovin’ Studios — taking its name from guitarist Scott ‘Everlovin’ Anderson — served as the band’s headquarters for these weekly hangouts and allowed the band to remain productive while touring was off the table.

For the brothers Burke, staking out a career in the entertainment business is literally in their blood going back three generations. They grew up on a tour bus, accompanying their parents as they performed in a successful Christian rock band in the 80s, learning the ways of taking a production on the road in their earliest formative years. Going back further still, their great-grandfather Rudy Bundy was a successful jazz clarinet player and big band leader through the 1930s and 40s, and worked as an executive for the Ringling Brothers Circus during its golden era. With two lifetimes of professional entertainment woven into their DNA , it’s no wonder that Have Gun, Will Travel has stood the test of time since its formation.

Now in the present, with the Silver Sounds EP set to be followed by the Voyager Golden EP in early 2023 (both to be pressed on 10-inch vinyl in silver and gold, respectively) and plans for the next LP already well underway, Have Gun, Will Travel are making a statement: they’re still here, and have no plans to hang it up anytime soon. This is only the beginning of what’s sure to be a busy few years for the band as they prepare to hit the road full-time yet again, as they continue along a life-defining journey of growth and discovery that has yet to reach its destination.

Resist the Machines

I want to be in the here I want to live in the now I want to share in the rarified air But I can’t seem to figure it out

I want the state of the art Give me the top of the line I’m keeping pace in the status quo race But it’s just a sign of the times

Cut the cord, hit the killswitch, disengage I’m a ghost in a post-postmodern age Resist the machines

I want to know what they know I want to see what they see They’re underground making silver sounds now But I can’t figure out what it means

I’ve seen the movie before Seen it time and again I’ve read the book about a dozen times now But I can’t recall how it ends

My Palladium

From the blog

Have gun will travel, one of my faves, steps out live this friday at the palladium.

I’m excited to have one of my favorite bay area bands back on our stage this Friday night. Have Gun Will Travel joins Geri X and Will Quinlan on the Hough Hall stage for a night of original music.

With Have Gun you get a genre-mashup of Indie, Americana and folk, that’s built around stellar songwriting, musicianship and vocals. The Palladium show will be the band’s second live date since March.

The show is Friday, November 6 at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information follow this link to the Palladium’s box office.

Veteran music journalist Bill DeYoung profiled the band in today’s edition of St. Pete Catalyst. Here’s a link to that story.

And here’s an excerpt from Bill’s story:

By Bill DeYoung/St. Pete Catalyst

Five years ago, the Bradenton-based band Have Gun, Will Travel ambitiously re-created the Band’s concert film The Last Waltz, with a collection of bay area musician friends, at the Palladium Theater.

Have Gun, Will Travel is back on the Palladium stage this Friday (Nov. 6). It would not be a stretch to call this upcoming concert The First Waltz.

have gun will travel (band) videos

By way of explanation: HGWT hasn’t been on a concert-sized stage in eight months (you know why). The band did perform to a small crowd at the Tampa club Crowbar in mid-October (it was also livestreamed).

“The energy was definitely different, but it felt really, really good to actually be playing for live people,” recalled singer, songwriter and guitarist Matt Burke. “We were so excited that we were able to produce the energy that we would in a normal show setting

With the mandated spaced-out seating, the Palladium will cap out at 181 people.

That give-and-take with the live audience is essential for rock ‘n’ roll bands. “There really is no substitute for playing for a room full of people,” Burke explains. “The energy of the audience kind of feeds your energy as a performer. There’s kind of a transaction happening in the room when you’re performing in front of people.”

Transactions have been, more or less, in the deficit column for Burke and the boys since Covid robbed them of that precious live-gig momentum. In March, the bandleader began a more-or-less weekly series of livestreamed solo shows from his living room.

“It’s kind of therapeutic for me,” says Burke. “I’ve been performing and playing music for people for the majority of my life, and I feel like I need that outlet. I need to connect in some way, whatever that means.”

With his wife handling the tech stuff and relaying questions from viewers, and his young daughter adding occasional vocals, Burke says his real-time livestreams (which are ongoing) have a “communal feel.

“It’s not just me looking at a phone.”

have gun will travel (band) videos

Have Gun, Will Travel (yes, it’s named after the old TV Western) began as a Burke solo acoustic project in 2008. Both Geri X and Will Quinlan, who are on Friday’s Palladium bill, were his gig-mates in those early days.

Not unlike The Band of Last Waltz fame, the Bradenton bunch live and breathe inside a potpourri of genres, from folkish Americana to bluesy rock to country to Memphis-style horn gumbo (check out this brand-new HGWT single, Burke’s “Melancholy Moon” by following this link .)

With six albums, and a new EP on the way (as well as a collection of home demo recordings), Have Gun, Will Travel is one of the bay area’s most creative – and consistently entertaining – bands.

Several of the band’s songs have been licensed for TV and advertising, Burke says, but other than that, their story isn’t much different from that of every other indie band in the United States.

“It’s definitely not easy,” he relates, “and several of us in the band have multiple sources of income, some have day jobs … we do whatever we can to make ends meet.

“But as a band, we’ve been fortunate in the fact that we’re all still as passionate about doing it as we ever were. So we’re willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.”

About Have Gun, Will Travel

Hunter Biden found guilty in gun trial that exposed dark parts of his life

Short deliberations led to conviction on all three counts.

WILMINGTON, Del. — Hunter Biden was found guilty of felony gun charges in federal court Tuesday, ending a trial that exposed some of the ugliest moments in the life of the president’s son and put on national display the first family’s pain, heartache and regrets.

The jury concluded that Hunter Biden, 54, lied about his drug use when he filled out a form to purchase a gun in October 2018 and then illegally owned that weapon as a drug user for 11 days.

The jury deliberated for a little more than three hours before finding him guilty on all three counts. Biden nodded, but otherwise showed little emotion when the verdict was read. He then hugged each member of his legal team and said thank you.

Biden walked out past the defendant’s table, hugged and kissed his wife, Melissa Cohen-Biden, and left the courtroom, shaking the hands of friends and family along the way.

Hunter Biden found guilty

have gun will travel (band) videos

In a written statement after he left the courthouse, Biden said he was “more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome. Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

The gun trial, which lasted just over a week, showcased years of internal behind-the-scenes drama in the Biden family, with relatives taking the witness stand. The proceedings also played out against the backdrop of President Biden ’s reelection campaign, with Republicans seizing on Hunter Biden’s legal troubles to try to portray the entire Biden family as corrupt.

The trial also showed the wrenching reality of prosecuting a drug addict, particularly one who has been open about his battles and says he has been sober since 2019. After the verdict, one juror told The Washington Post that he didn’t believe Hunter Biden belonged in prison and that he felt bad that his daughter had to testify about her father’s drug use.

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika and prosecutors had warned the jurors that “sympathy” shouldn’t play into their verdict. In the end, after a trial that included painful testimony from Biden’s romantic partners and readings of his text messages, jurors were asked to decide whether he lied on a form when he purchased a gun and then illegally owned it as a drug addict.

President Biden said in a statement that he loves Hunter and is “proud of the man he is today.” Biden said earlier that he would not pardon his son if convicted, and he repeated that Tuesday.

“I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal,” the president said. “Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”

Special counsel David Weiss, who has overseen the investigation of Hunter Biden for years, said in a brief address to reporters after the verdict that the gun case “was not just about addiction, a disease that haunts families across the United States, including Hunter Biden’s family. This case was about the legal choices the defendant made while in the throes of addiction. It was these choices and the combination of guns and drugs that made his conduct dangerous.”

Weiss, who is preparing to put Hunter Biden on trial again in September on tax charges, said the verdict illustrated a basic principle of American justice.

“No one in this country is above the law. Everyone must be accountable for their actions, including this defendant,” said Weiss, who also signaled that when it came to Biden’s sentence, the president’s son should again be treated like everyone else.

The most serious charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, but as a first-time offender, Biden will probably get a much lighter sentence and may not go to jail.

Biden’s defense lawyers argued that prosecutors did not offer a drug test or other concrete evidence that he was on drugs when he bought the gun, or that he took drugs while the gun was in his possession. Prosecutors told the jury in closing arguments that they did not have to prove those details and that their responsibility was to show Biden knew he was a drug user and that he was addicted to them at the time of the October 2018 purchase.

If the trial evidence does not conclusively prove Hunter Biden was a crack addict in 2018, “then no one is a crack addict,” prosecutor Derek Hines told jurors in his closing argument Monday. Hines mocked the defense claim that Biden, a Yale-educated lawyer, was somehow confused by the paperwork questions that come with buying a firearm.

“The same laws apply to the defendant just like they would to anyone else,” Hines said.

His fellow prosecutor Leo Wise alluded to the frequent courtroom presence of first lady Jill Biden and much of the Biden family, telling the jury: “People sitting in the gallery are not evidence.”

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell accused prosecutors of performing a kind of magic trick for the jury — trying to get them to focus on something other than the most critical evidence. Lowell said prosecutors were trying to twist Biden’s words of recovery — particularly how he described his once-frequent drug use in his autobiography — into damning admissions.

A 2018 text in which Hunter Biden called himself a “liar,” “thief” and “addict” was not an admission but a “cry for help,” Lowell said. Prosecutors “spent hours, literally hours, recounting Hunter’s terrible journey through alcohol and drug abuse,” Lowell said. Biden never used or loaded the gun, Lowell told the jury.

The gun charges Biden faced are rarely brought as stand-alone counts without being linked to other alleged crimes. The charges against Biden grew out of a long-running federal investigation into his taxes and business deals in a period during which his father was vice president and after he left that office.

In an interview with The Post, Juror No. 10, a 68-year-old White man, said the jury did not discuss politics. Joe Biden’s name “was brought up once during trial, when it sunk in a little bit: The sitting president’s son on trial. … That was hard, but you kind of put it out of your mind. … I don’t think it was politicized,” said the juror, who declined to give his name over concerns that he could face public recriminations.

The juror said that when the panel began deliberating, its members were evenly divided 6-6 on whether to convict, but as they discussed the evidence they quickly became unanimous for conviction.

He also said it was sad to hear testimony from Hunter Biden’s daughter, Naomi Biden, who was called as a witness by the defense. “No daughter should ever have to testify against her dad,” the juror said.

“I really don’t think that Hunter belongs in jail,” the juror said, though he added that Biden’s own book provided much of the critical evidence against him.

“Hunter didn’t testify, but by all counts he did testify through the book because that was his words,” the juror said. “And he chose to have it audio — so when you have it audio, and he’s writing that book and he’s telling you, ‘I’m an addict’ — that has to play a part. You can’t help but not think of him admitting to himself that he was an addict.”

Last summer, Hunter Biden agreed to a deal with prosecutors that would have involved admitting to the facts of the gun case. But the deal fell apart amid scrutiny from the trial judge and disagreement over whether Biden would get immunity from potential additional charges.

Prosecutors called witness after witness to testify about Hunter Biden’s rampant use of crack cocaine after the death of his brother, Beau, from brain cancer in 2015. The witnesses included Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and Beau Biden’s widow, Hallie Biden, with whom Hunter Biden had an on-again, off-again romance between 2016 and 2019.

They offered text messages and anecdotes detailing Hunter Biden’s alleged drug use around the time of the gun purchase and failed attempts to help him. In one key text message from Hunter Biden days after he bought the gun, he told Hallie he was “sleeping on a car smoking crack.”

Hunter Biden’s personal life by all accounts has become more stable in the last few years — with his marriage to Cohen-Biden and a young son named Beau after his late brother. But the legal threats he faces have escalated.

He is scheduled to go to trial in Los Angeles on federal tax evasion charges in September, two months before Election Day. That trial involves the same federal prosecutors, who are expected to outline the various ways in which Biden was spending his money. According to the indictment, much of it went to “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes.”

In Delaware, prosecutors opened their case by playing a recording of Hunter Biden reading from his revealing memoir, in which he disclosed in great detail how he would buy drugs and use them and spoke of various women he slept with in hotels around the country. Trial exhibits included photos displayed on a large screen in the courtroom, showing him passed out from drug use or in a bubble bath with a woman.

Hunter Biden has said he’s been sober since around 2019. His book was a confessional in some ways, and he has tried to repair relationships that were broken by his years of debauchery. He has also tried to adopt a more public profile and to push back against Republicans in Congress and elsewhere who have been his most vocal critics.

Throughout the trial, various family members filled the rows behind the defense table where Biden sat. His mother, Jill Biden, tried to be there almost every day, traveling back and forth from France so she could attend the trial in between joining her husband for commemorations of D-Day and a state dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Almost every time Hunter Biden entered or left the courtroom, he kissed Jill Biden on the cheek, then kissed his wife and walked hand in hand with her on the way out.

Jill Biden, a Fierce Protector of Hunter Biden, Leaves France for Wilmington

The first lady’s departure from a high-profile foreign trip was a dramatic illustration of the Biden family’s personal priorities. She is expected to return to France on Saturday.

Katie reported from Washington and is the author of a book on modern first ladies.

Jill Biden, the first lady, left President Biden’s side in France on Thursday to make the trans-Atlantic trip back to Delaware, where Hunter Biden is standing trial on gun charges.

The first lady is then scheduled to return to France for a state visit on Saturday, according to her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander.

The departure of the first lady from a high-profile foreign trip was perhaps the most dramatic illustration yet of the Biden family’s personal priorities , which lie some 3,600 miles away from France, in Courtroom 4A of the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building in Wilmington, Del.

Hunter Biden is on trial on charges of lying about his drug use on a form to buy a gun in October 2018, and of illegally possessing the weapon.

The boomerang trip also says something about the resolve of the first lady, who is not a blood relative of Hunter Biden but who is the woman who raised him since he was a small child. Over time, she has become her family’s protective backbone.

“I’m his mom,” she said in an interview in 2022, when Hunter Biden was the subject of a federal investigation. “I mean, I have to support him and love him, and, you know, I’m constantly talking to him, sending him texts; ‘How you doing?’ Because it’s tough.”

A plane ride across the Atlantic Ocean shows just how tough.

The first lady is expected to be in the courtroom again on Friday after spending three days there so far this week. On Monday — her 73rd birthday — she followed hours of mundane interviews with dozens of prospective jurors. At breaks, she offered hugs to Hunter Biden. She comforted her daughter, Ashley Biden, who has also been a fixture in court this week and has at times grown emotional as her brother’s struggles have been cataloged. The first lady’s eyes stayed dry.

The Bidens like to stress that they deal with many of the same challenges — namely, addiction — that most Americans face, but this week, the family’s singularly complicated dynamics have been on display.

On Wednesday, the first lady stepped out of the room for the testimony of Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, with whom she is said to have an icy relationship. On Thursday, she missed testimony from her former daughter-in-law, Hallie Biden, who dated Hunter Biden after the death of his older brother, Beau.

Because their relationship darkened and descended into drug use, Hallie Biden was a key witness for the prosecution: She had disposed of Hunter Biden’s Colt Cobra gun in a trash can outside a grocery store. The collapse of a plea deal between Mr. Biden and prosecutors last year led to charges that he had lied on a federal application while purchasing that gun.

Dr. Biden will want to be present when defense attorneys begin to call members of the Biden family. The expected list includes Naomi Biden, the first couple’s eldest granddaughter and a vocal defender of her father, and James Biden, the president’s brother, who was the Biden tasked with trying to bring his wayward nephew back from the grip of addiction.

Hunter Biden and the first lady, whom he calls mom, have a close relationship, according to people who know them. But the nature of their bond is different than the one Hunter Biden has with others in the family — namely Valerie Biden Owens, his aunt. She was the Biden who first moved in to raise Mr. Biden’s boys after his first wife, Neilia, and infant daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident in December 1972.

Hunter and Beau Biden were attached to Ms. Biden Owens, and their uncle, James Biden, who had also stepped in to raise the boys before their father started dating Jill Biden in 1975. The Bidens married in 1977.

Growing up, it was Beau Biden, Mr. Biden’s elder son who died in 2015, who shared her sense of humor. Hunter Biden wrote in his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” that he at times felt left out of their jokes. But he also praised her “for doing a great job, especially with everyone watching.”

In her own memoir, “Where the Light Enters,” Dr. Biden wrote that Hunter Biden was the Biden son “more like me.”

“He didn’t want to talk about his feelings as much,” she wrote, “and he didn’t always know how to express them as a kid, but he would always show you with his actions — he was warm and loving.”

Decades later, he would clash explosively with Dr. Biden when she helped lead a family effort to get him clean. In early 2019, when Hunter Biden was again reeling from addiction, Dr. Biden called him and invited him for dinner at the family home in Wilmington. It turned out to be an intervention. Hunter Biden stormed out of the house and left for California, where he continued to use, he wrote in his memoir, until he met his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden.

The extent of his addiction problems was not made public until the contents of a laptop he had left at a repair shop were publicly disseminated on conservative websites ahead of the 2020 election.

In the tumultuous years since, the first lady has tried to keep him close and telegraph her support by including Hunter Biden and his family, who live in Los Angeles, in East Wing events like the White House Easter Egg Roll. After he took up painting , she hung one of his pieces in her East Wing office.

She also publicly asserted his innocence as Hunter Biden was investigated for the gun purchase and tax evasion issues, the source of another round of charges for which he will stand trial later this year.

“Everybody and their brother has investigated Hunter,” the first lady told NBC News in the fall of 2022 . “They keep at it, and at it and at it. I know that Hunter is innocent. I love my son, and I will keep looking forward.”

That is now for a jury to decide.
