And if you visit in December, you can pretty much get the best out of it. Are you ready to plan the most memorable trip of your life? Let’s go!

I’m sure the thing you’re most interested in about your Thailand December vacation is the weather. You probably know Thailand is a year-round sunny destination, but you’ve also heard about the dreadful wet season. Don’t worry; December is on the sunny side of things. The weather is different for the different areas, though. 

• Bangkok The capital of Thailand is also one of the most exciting cities in the world. So even if your goal is to spend the trip on one of the magical Thai beaches, I recommend spending a few days in Bangkok as well. December is one of the best months to do that. The temperatures are between 20°C and 31°C (68-81°F), and there are only 7% chances of rain on average.
• Chiang Mai The capital of the North is one of the most charming cities in the Kingdom. Known for its lush jungles, signature dishes, and elephant interactions, it’s a magnet for tourists. Being further north, the temperatures are way milder than the ones in Bangkok or the islands. Ranging between 14°C and 26°C (57-78°F) with only a 7% chance of rain, the weather in Chiang Mai in December is as perfect as possible.

• Phuket Phuket is the prime beach destination in Thailand. Having two international airports in the area means it’s easy to spend your entire December in Thailand trip there and pump your vitamin D levels to the max. The temperatures are pretty consistent, with averages between 26°C and 28°C (79-83°F), but the rain expectation is rather high, at a 56% chance of precipitation. While this may seem pretty bad for a beach destination, keep in mind there are only four months with less rain expectation than December, and Phuket is still considered one of the best beach destinations in the world.
• Koh Samui Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is the most significant island in the Chumphon Archipelago. Alongside the nearby Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the archipelago is famous for its party life, fancy resorts, and diving spots. December is the first month after the wet season in Koh Samui, offering temperatures ranging between 26°C and 29°C (80-84°F) with around 30% chance of rain.

Cons to Spending December in Thailand

• Crowds Being as perfect as it is, spending December in Thailand is an idea that circles around millions of heads. So you can expect thick crowds around most attractions and beaches. The good thing is there are countless opulent temples and golden shores in the Kingdom, so finding a tranquil one is not that hard.
• Prices Prices are always at their highest during the peak tourist months. And while the food increase won’t be noticeable, hotels and plane tickets cost way more in December. That’s why if you want a nice accommodation without having to spend a fortune, I recommend organizing your  Thai itinerary  at least three months ahead.
• Shorter Days. December in Thailand offers the least amount of daylight hours. And while the amount is not mindblowing (around 3 hours less), it’s still less time to spend exploring landmarks and beaches.

How to get Around Thailand

Since the weather is good, you can use all the transportation options the Kingdom offers. Air Asia have reasonably priced tickets, but you still have to deal with the whole airport hassle. Still, for long distances, it’s the best way to travel.

 For not that long distances, I like to use the Thai buses. Way cheaper than planes and almost hassle-free. For the islands, obviously, you’ll have to use ferries and fast boats. The best place to find all kinds of transportation in Thailand (and other parts of Asia) is, by far,  12go.asia .

To be completely independent, you can  rent a car  and use it inside the cities as well. Remember, though, that in Thailand, they drive on the left side of the road, so it may be a bit tricky.

What to do in Thailand in December

Everything is open during December in Thailand, so you can visit the biggest attractions in your area (for more info,  check here ).  The December-specific activities are:

• Christmas Although Thai people are mostly Buddhist, they do celebrate the birth of Jesus. While they don’t care about Jesus that much but more about Santa, you can still find plenty of Christmas wholesales, Christmas parties, and Christmas-themed shops.
• New Year’s Eve Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, is celebrated in April and has nothing to do with our New Year (water guns and stuff). Thai people love to party, though, so you can expect lavish celebrations, fireworks, and all the mandatory New Year’s Eve things on December 31st. 

• King’s Birthday Celebrated on December 5th, this is actually their previous beloved King’s birthday. It’s a national holiday where Thai people honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej (also known as Rama IX) by dressing in yellow. 
• Chiang Mai Red Cross and Winter Fair Starting at the end of December and lasting for two weeks, Chiang Mai’s favorite fair is a treat for all ages and includes various food competitions, a Ferris wheel, and everything you can expect from a good fair.

• Loy Krathong Usually held at the end of November, the celebrations for Thailand’s most picturesque holiday often last well into December.  Don’t know what Loy Kratong is? Well, you’ve probably seen a picture with thousand lanterns flowing in the air (or in the rivers). This is Loy Kratong – the incredibly scenic festival of light.

The weather in Thailand in December is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from 22°C to 32°C.

Silky-soft beaches, jungle-draped mountains, incredible food and a well-connected position at the heart of Southeast Asia have made Thailand a tourism hub for decades.

It welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who dream of perpetually sunny skies and balmy weather might be dismayed at the pelting rain that arrives like clockwork every July or the sky-high price of their hotel from December to January.

The kingdom is full of diversions – myriad night markets, thundering waterfalls, even cherry blossoms and the occasional dusting of frost – but to experience them for yourself, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Here’s how.

December to February is best for beaches

The prevailing joke about Thai weather is that the country has three seasons: hot; wet and hot; and really, really hot. That may be, but when the “cool” season rolls around in December, you will find Thais bundled up in sweaters and even puffer jackets to combat temperatures that fall as low as 23°C (73°F).

While this may be cold for Thais, it’s perfect for international travelers hitting the beach, especially those escaping the northern winter, and resorts like Phuket , Samui and Krabi are predictably packed with sun-seekers at this time of year.

Daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) make outdoor activities warm but bearable, while nights are a hive of activity, with street food vendors lining the sidewalks and markets clad in fairy lights tempting even the most unwilling of shoppers.

The cool season is not for beachcombers alone. This time of year sees frost up north in the mountains as temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). The northeast region even ushers in its own cherry blossom season as Phu Lom Lo erupts in a burst of pink Himalayan cherry blooms. Early morning hikers are rewarded with sunrise views over a sea of fog at the northern border with Laos , and wildflowers dapple the slopes of Doi Suthep and Phu Tabberk .

Not surprisingly then, this time is considered Thailand’s high season, when hotel and transportation prices are at their peak. However, the payoff is the kingdom at arguably its most beautiful and welcoming, temperature-wise.

March and April are best for tropical fruit and Songkran

The weather, even for Thais, becomes alarmingly toasty during Thailand’s “summer” when temperatures average 30°C (87°F). School is out, meaning the capital is less crowded than usual, and the beaches are typically jammed with Bangkokians seeking reprieve from the heat. Meanwhile, temperatures in the usually temperate north soar to 36°C (97°F).

While it may seem a miserable time to visit, foodies will have a field day because all of Thailand’s most beloved fruits – mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans and Marian plums – are in season.

In mid-April, Thailand celebrates its new year, Songkran , and the streets burst into joyful water fights. You’ll find the entire country in celebration: families seeking blessings from their elders, Thais dancing in the streets, and travelers receiving benedictions in the form of perfumed water on the hands, daubings of brightly colored powder on the cheeks or (most likely) a blast of water in the face. Fans of water fights (and getting drenched) will find their like-minded brethren anywhere in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, fans of an empty Bangkok can take advantage of… an empty Bangkok. That means breezy commutes from one end of the city to the other, less competition at popular restaurants and fewer crowds to contend with at shopping malls and theaters. The change in the city is so pronounced that quite a few Bangkokians prize this time of year, opting to make sure that when Songkhran rolls around, they celebrate in the capital.

May to October is best for accommodation bargains

Thailand’s rainy season is long, but it doesn’t necessarily mean non-stop torrential downpours. Monsoon rains, especially before July, are typically violent but short, usually arriving in the early evening and lasting for 20 to 30 minutes. (Luckily, Thailand’s location means it avoids the strong typhoons experienced by Vietnam and the Philippines.) The problem is Bangkok traffic snarls for hours as a result, but travelers in less congested destinations are not necessarily affected, and hotel and transportation prices linger at months-long lows.

From May to July, beach resorts on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand – especially on weekdays – are basically deserted, claiming only a fraction of the prices they would normally charge during high season. This means that even at five-star resorts, choice rooms can be rented for far less than their usual rate. And while there will likely be daily rains, they’re usually brief.

Low-season rates extend to non-beach-but-still-popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Khao Sok , where a treasure trove of accommodation options, from floating bungalows to mountaintop cabins, awaits savvy bargain hunters willing to put up with a sudden shower or two. In contrast, July and August are peak season for islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Samui , where the weather is less affected by monsoon rains.

From September to October, the northeast is brimming with waterfalls, providing impromptu bathing areas for visitors with the foresight to bring bathing suits or even just towels. A word of warning: this is also when flooding may occur in the north or northeast, with water reaching all the way to Bangkok in some years. Only riverside areas are at risk, so make sure to check before you go.

November is best for experiencing Loi Krathong

November marks the beginning of the dry season and is considered the shoulder to high season, but bargains can still be found among the bigger local hotel chains.

On the night of November’s full moon, the country celebrates its Loi Krathong festival, marking the end of the rainy season. This is also when people float away their sins by placing candles on makeshift river rafts or lanterns in hopes of welcoming the coming year with a clean slate.

The time to not go to Thailand is the rainy season, from May to October, when monsoons blow in from all directions. The rain is heavy but sporadic in the first few months, while in the final months of the rainy season, it's more persistent.

When is Thailand’s shoulder season?

Thailand's shoulder season lasts from April to June and then again from September to October. Temperatures will peak country-wide around April, but this also means you don't have to compete for a prime spot on the best beaches in Thailand, and hotel rates will be lower. However, business and ferry services on the smaller islands (especially on the Andaman Sea side) will shut down as the low season approaches. The period from September to October sees more rain but fewer crowds.

Over on Thailand's west coast and the Andaman Sea—where you'll find the Thai islands of Phuket , Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi—the optimum time for a beach holiday is slightly earlier, in December and January, when fresher weather, maximum sunshine, and minimum rainfall combine to create the best climate for a beach holiday.

When is the best time to visit Bangkok?

Bangkok , meanwhile, is stiflingly humid practically all the time (discomfort levels range from 'high' to 'extreme' year-round), but the best time to visit Thailand's capital is in December and January when it is dry and a relatively bearable 87-89ºF average during the day, and 68ºF at night (the coolest Bangkok ever gets). But also consider July and August, when there are great hotel deals to be had—and the rain only lasts for a short while in the afternoon. Avoid the months of April and September. April is unbearably hot and humid; September is hot and torrentially wet.

When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai and the north?

Chiang Mai and the lovely little town of Pai, in Thailand's cooler north, have much more pleasant climates than Bangkok and the south. Go from December to February for lovely sunny days (around 84ºF) and cooler evenings (the temperature dips to 55ºF—and even lower in the highlands, so dig out some warm clothes if you're trekking).

December is high to peak season in Thailand and one of the reasons that is the case is because the weather is brilliant. Lots of sunshine down south, little rain and the temperatures are comfortable without being scalding or freezing.

To be honest the entire country is all very good. You've got relatively moderate temperatures across the entire country and very little to no rain. Underwater visibility is great, making December a great time for diving around Thailand. If anything, the main concern, if you want to call it that, is that the country will be filling up as December and January are peak season – booking your accommodation in advance can be prudent.

As already mentioned, great weather across the country makes all the islands pretty good. The classic Thai islands such as Phuket , Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi on the west coast, Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao in the southern Gulf and Ko Samet , Ko Chang and Ko Kut in the east, will all be busy and deservedly so.

If you're planning a stay on Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lipe in southwest Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, having a reservation in advance would be prudent as these two are traditionally at near capacity at this time of the year.

You shouldn't run into any rain whatsoever in Bangkok in December. Temperatures will swing between low 20s and low 30s Celsius and you can expect a lot of clear blue skies. Bangkok at its best.

Like Bangkok and Central Thailand, Ko Chang and the surrounding islands are lovely in December. Very little rain, with plenty of sunshine and comfortable mid-range temperatures. Crowding will become a bit of an issue as things build up towards Christmas and New Year.

Chiang Mai in December sees little rain and comfortable, almost cool daytime temperatures. Evenings can be cold and if you're trekking you will need at least a long-sleeved top — locals will be running around in leather jackets and 52 layers. A great time to explore Chiang Mai and beyond.

As with Northern and Central Thailand, temperatures will be about as moderate as it gets in northeast Thailand — even a bit chilly in the evenings — and they'll be little rain to speak of.

The only region that sees much rain in December, the Gulf Coast of Thailand sees a bit of rain — expect some rain every other day — but between the rain you'll get decent blasts of sunshine to help you recuperate. Despite the rain, December can be very busy, especially on Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan .

More glorious weather — and the crowds flock to it. In December on Thailand's west coast you can expect a lot of sunshine with just the very occasional shower. The weather is definitely better on this coast than the Gulf Coast — though not as good as on Ko Chang. Some islands, like Ko Phi Phi are packed to the rafters in December. A fine choice.

Little rain, lots of sunshine and nice and cool weather: December is the best time to be in Bangkok. As opposed to the rest of the year, in December its skies are clear blue. The area around Bangkok is also worth a visit. Visit the ancient temples of Ayutthaya, explore Khao Yai National Park’s jungle, relax on Koh Samet’s white beaches and visit the Kanchanaburi bridge.

Ayutthaya – Soak up the culture and visit historical temples. Bangkok – Thailand’s capital blends old temples with ultra modern skyscrapers. Kanchanaburi – Town brimming with nature and history. May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

Low humidity levels and average temperatures of 26°C in Bangkok and central Thailand are ideal for sightseeing. The north of the country also enjoys favourable weather conditions for trekking in the Golden Triangle region and cycling around the Chiang Mai countryside, with temperatures slightly cooler than in Bangkok (avg temp: 23-25°C). 

Sun seekers have the pick of virtually all Thailand’s beaches in December with daytime highs of 31°C not uncommon and blue skies the order of the day. The only region to see much rainfall is the south east (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Khanom) although plenty of sunshine punctuates the showers. Dry conditions and warm sea temperatures off the west coast make December an ideal month for diving around Phuket, Khao Lak & Krabi . Favourable weather conditions makes Thailand a great location for a Christmas holiday, especially the west coast beaches. Early booking is essential.

1. Passport and Thai Visa

From October 1, 2022 until March 31, 2023, travelers will be allowed to stay for 30 days or 45 days without prior approval of a Thai visa.

During this period, the length of stay per visit will be 45 days for passport holders of the following countries/territories who may enter Thailand under a tourist Visa Exemption scheme: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, The Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovak, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE, UK, Ukraine, Vietnam, and the USA.

Also, during this period, the length of stay per visit will be 30 days for passport holders of the following countries/territories who may apply for a VOA: Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Malta, Mexico, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, and Vanuatu.  The visa fee of 2,000 THB will remain the same for these countries.

In addition, passport holders of the following countries/ territories may enter Thailand without a visa under a bilateral agreement: Cambodia (45 days), Myanmar (45 days), Lao PDR. (45 days, Macau (45 days), Mongolia (45 days), Russia (45 days), Argentina (90 days), Brazil (90 days), Chile (90 days), Korea (ROK) (90 days), and Peru (90 days).

Note: Please make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months or check with your airline for the passport validity requirement.

2. Proof of Vaccination or COVID Test

Travelers may freely travel to Thailand. It is no longer required to possess Proof of Vaccination or a pre-departure COVID test.

Note: Travelers must check with their airlines the travel requirements in case they have a transit in a third country before arriving in Thailand.

Apply for Tourist and Non-Immigrant E-Visa

THAILAND – Upcoming Changes to the Visa and Travel System

New visa and travel measures proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and aimed at boosting tourism and stimulating Thailand’s economy were approved in a recent cabinet meeting. These guidelines currently outline only the principles of the new measures. Detailed rules and practices will be announced later by relevant government agencies.

Short-term measures targeted for implementation on June 1, 2024

• The visa-on-arrival (VOA) policy will be expanded to include additional countries.
• The allowable stay of 30 days will be extended to 60 days for tourists and short-term business travelers from 93 countries.
• Introduction of a new visa category called “Destination Thailand Visa” (DTV). This visa is geared towards attracting foreign nationals who are combining work and tourism, including skilled professionals, digital nomads, and participants in activities like Muay Thai, culinary arts, sports, medical treatment, training, seminars, and art exhibitions. Financial proof or sponsorship of at least THB 500,000 is required to qualify for the visa. It provides multiple entries with a stay of up to 180 days per entry and is valid for up to five years.
• Extended visa options are to be provided for international students and recent graduates allowing in-country conversion of a current visa to a work permit once students find a suitable employer.

Medium-term measures targeted for implementation from September to December 2024.

• Consolidation of visa codes from 17 to 7 categories (B, ED, F, M, O, L-A, O (L-A))
• Long-stay visa requirements for applicants over a certain age who are retiring in Thailand will be relaxed. The health insurance deposit requirements for non-immigrant O-A visa will be reduced to 40,000 THB for outpatient and 400,000 THB for inpatient care.
• Expansion of eligible countries for Non-Immigrant O-X visa. The plan is to implement this in September 2024.
• Increase e-visa services to all Thai embassies, consulates, and trade offices worldwide by December 2024.

Long-term measures targeted for implementation in June 2025.

• Thailand will be introducing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for foreign nationals who are exempted from visa inspection. The ETA will not have any associated fees and it will be required for eligible travelers upon each entry. Travelers will apply for the ETA prior to traveling to Thailand or before passing through immigration clearance. Exemptions are in place for diplomatic, official passport holders, and United Nations Laissez-Passer users, as well as Border Pass users at land and water checkpoints.
• The implementation is set in two phases: 1) A temporary ETA system by December 2024, and 2) a complete system integrating e-Visa and ETA by June 2025.

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry: 93 Nations Now Qualify

Thailand's aggressive push to attract tourists through these visa promotions highlights its commitment to reviving the tourism sector and ensuring long-term economic stability.

In an effort to attract more tourists and remote workers, the Thai cabinet this week rolled out a series of new visa promotions, including visa-free and visa-on-arrival schemes, extended stays for students, and reduced compulsory health insurance for retirees.

Starting June 1, the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand will increase from 57 to 93. Under the new scheme, visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, compared to the earlier limit of 30 days.

The countries eligible for visa-free stays include key tourism markets like China and India, as well as U.S., UK, Albania, UAE, Cambodia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Romania, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.

The Thai cabinet has also approved visa-on-arrival for 31 countries, up from the previous 19. This list includes Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Fiji and Malta

Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke emphasized the importance of tourism to Thailand’s national economy and its role in job creation. From January to May 26 this year, Thailand recorded 14.3 million tourists and aims to reach a record 40 million foreign arrivals for the full year, with an expected revenue of THB 3.5 trillion ($95.73 billion).

In comparison, 2019 saw a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating THB 1.91 trillion in revenue.

New Measures for Students and Digital Nomads

In a bid to retain talent, postgraduate students will now be able to stay in Thailand for an additional year after graduation, provided they obtain certification from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.

This extension aims to help foreign students secure employment in the country. According to Wacharonke currently there are approximately 40,000 such students in Thailand

Digital nomads will also benefit from the new visa policies. The “Destination Thailand Visa” will now be valid for five years, allowing a 180-day maximum stay per visit, extendable for another 180 days, with another THB 10,000 ($270) fee.

Previously, digital nomads were entitled to only two 30-day stays. Wacharonke noted that this measure targets remote workers, freelancers, and those interested in learning Muay Thai and Thai cuisine.

Eased Requirements for Retirees

Retirees aged 50 years or more seeking long-stay visas will benefit from reduced health insurance requirements. Currently, these visitors must have health insurance coverage worth THB 3 million ($82,000). The requirement is now lowered to THB 440,000 ($12,000), effective for applicants from September to December. Additionally, the cabinet approved the expansion of e-visa application services at Thai consulates and embassies, increasing from 47 to 94 locations starting in September.

Targeting Key Source Markets

China and India are among the largest and most important source markets for global tourism, and Thailand is keen to capture the interest of travelers from these countries.

Data firm ForwardKeys noted a 212% surge in travel from China to Kazakhstan during this year’s Labor Day holiday, with notable increases to Singapore, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, and the Maldives, following the relaxation of visa policies.

While Thailand and China have agreed on a reciprocal permanent visa exemption , Skift had earlier reported that Thailand’s slower recovery is attributed to ongoing safety concerns.

India is also a critical market for Thailand , being the fastest-growing source of tourists. In 2023, over 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand, making it the fourth-largest source market for the country. These tourists contributed more than THB 63 billion ($1.7 billion) in spending.

In November last year, Thailand decided to grant visa-free entry to Indian citizens from November 10 till May this year. The Thai cabinet this month approved a plan to extend the visa exemption for six more months.

Thailand improves non-immigration visa rules for international students, introduces Destination Thailand Visa

T hailand’s Cabinet approved several visa and travel facilitation measures to stimulate the country’s economy and promote its tourism, following a proposal by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on May 28, 2024.

The measures are divided into three stages.

Five short-term measures expected to take effect in late June or early July 2024 include the following:

Extending visa exemption for tourists and short-term business visitors for a period of up to 60 days (from the period of 30 days) for passport holders from 93 countries.

Increasing the number of countries whose passport holders qualify for Visa on Arrival (VOA) from 19 to 31

Introducing the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for long-term travel, “digital nomads,” and participants in certain cultural activities, with a period of stay up to 180 days per visit, on a multiple-entry basis within 5 years;

Improving the non-immigration visa to facilitate the travel of international students and those nearing graduation in Thailand;

Establishing a “Visa Policy Committee” to develop Thailand’s entry processes and improve the efficiency of immigration procedures.

Three medium-term measures are as follows:

Grouping and streamlining non-immigrant visa types;

Lowering health insurance requirements and expanding the list of countries eligible for long-term non-immigrant visa applications;

Implementing the e-Visa system at all embassies and consulates by December 2024.

One long-term measure includes the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be implemented in line with the e-Visa system.

9:30 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

Wednesday, 11:02 am (local time) :   Don Mueang International (DMK) Bangkok Thailand is 4 hours ahead of Moscow so the time in Moscow is actually 7:02 am you actually arrive the day after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

11:17 am (local time) :  arrive at the gate at DMK deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 39 minutes to your destination

11:55 am (local time) :  arrive in Bangkok Thailand

Total travel time: 14 hours

Flying private is roughly 1.5x faster , and saves you about 4.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

‘The Singer in the Village’ Who Became an Opera Star

During a break at the Royal Opera House, Aigul Akhmetshina discussed her action-packed career, “Carmen” and her mission to spread her love of opera.

The Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina only just turned 28. Yet she already has a couple of operatic records under her belt: She’s the youngest artist ever to have sung “Carmen” at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Royal Opera House in London.

Her trajectory began about 2,700 miles east of London.

Akhmetshina was born in the village of Kirgiz-Miyaki in the Republic of Bashkortostan region of western Russia, closer to Kazakhstan than Moscow. She is one of three children of a single mother who worked in the passport office at the police station, whose own mother was a police officer in Soviet times.

She was 3 years old when she first sang onstage, and 14 when she decamped to the nearest city, Ufa, to study music. Scouted in her teens at a voice competition in Moscow, she was invited to try out for the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker program for young artists in London — and got the gig. By 22, she was stepping in as an understudy to sing “Carmen” on the main stage, and delivering a career-shifting performance in the title role.

Akhmetshina was in London after singing in “Carmen,” one of eight productions of the Bizet opera that she is performing in this season at major opera houses. In an interview during a break from rehearsals for a gala at the Royal Opera House, she discussed her action-packed career and her mission to spread her love of opera.

The following conversation has been edited and condensed.

What were you like as a little girl?

Everyone knew me as Aigul, the singer in the village. I was free-spirited, and an old soul. I would give advice to anyone who came to me with a question. I was into psychology and philosophy from an early age.

For me, the village was too small. I was always saying: “Why can’t I just be free to go everywhere? I want to see the world, I want to explore, I want to learn.”

Describe what it was like to be asked to sing Carmen as a 22-year-old understudy at the Royal Opera House.

I got a phone call saying that they didn’t have anyone to perform Carmen, and that I could withdraw if I wanted to. Part of me was scared, but another part of me thought, “I can do it.” I always love a challenge. I wouldn’t choose this job if I wasn’t addicted to adrenaline.

I also always felt a strong connection with the character of Carmen. I felt I understood her. Carmen is not just a sexy woman who is playing with men. She’s a very interesting character to dive into psychologically.

Then the fear came. I was sitting on the main stage before the curtain went up, thinking, “Aigul, what are you doing?” In that moment, I thought to myself: “Either I will close the doors on my career for a couple of years, because people will think ‘she’s not ready, she’s too young,’ or it will be a very good kickoff — and then what?”

I remember nothing of the performance except the curtain going up and the curtain coming down. But it was amazing. I got all the support from everyone at the Royal Opera House, which is my home theater. At the same time, I felt a heavy responsibility. At times, I knew that they were believing in me more than I believed in myself.

How does it feel to be the youngest mezzo ever to sing Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Royal Opera House?

I’m basically climbing the mountain, and at some point, I will have to go down that mountain. It’s just the cycle of life.

Some people say I’m at my peak. I don’t think so, because I still haven’t done my best Carmen. And I don’t know if I will achieve that any day.

The mezzo-soprano repertoire is more limited than the soprano repertoire. Mezzos don’t often get the title roles. Watching you onstage, you seem to be someone who wants to be the main attraction.

But you can do that in a smaller role, too. I love to transform into different characters. I really think that mezzos are more interesting to play, because there are more colors and diversity in mezzo roles. You can play different characters which you would never explore in your ordinary life.

The future of opera as an art form seems uncertain sometimes, because funding is constantly being cut. How can opera be made accessible to bigger audiences?

I think we’re slowly doing that, with livestreamed broadcasts, and open-air performances where anyone can come.

All art forms are suffering. I believe we can do collaborations with pop music, with jazz, and introduce more people to classical music in that way. I support artists who combine modern music with classical music. My favorite D.J. — the French D.J. Leblanc — mixes classical music with electronic music. People love it. I see how it slowly impacts them.

The movie industry is making movies about artists, about conductors. Maybe they’re not good movies, but at least they try.

How do you promote opera as an art form?

I love to sometimes spontaneously sing in the London Underground, shock people. On a recent holiday in Dubai, I was on the beach and people asked me what I did. When I said I was an opera singer, they said they’d never been at an opera, and I said “Now you will be.” I sang the “Habanera” aria from “Carmen” for them right there on the beach. They had never heard it, and they said, “Oh, I really should go.”

I do that often, if I see that people don’t have the opportunity and were never introduced to classical music. They feel the vibration of your voice so closely that they really think: maybe I should experience this.
