Can you travel with full-size sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with full-size sunscreen. However, due to unforch TSA rules, it will need to be added to checked baggage if it contains over 3.4 fluid ounces of liquid, aerosol or gel.

What size sunscreen can you carry on a plane?

You can carry liquids, gel and aerosol sunscreen in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces Per TSA regulations, each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of these items. Can you travel with spray sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with spray sunscreen on a plane. A cap must cover travel sunscreen sprays with an aerosol nozzle to prevent accidental release.

Take note: travel-sized sunscreen spray for the face is pretty easy to find at your local Target , Sephora or Ulta . However, most spray sunscreen for the body comes in full size, which is above TSA's carry-on regulations. So this may have to be an item that needs to be packed in your checked luggage or purchased at your destination.

Does stick sunscreen count as liquid?

Stick sunscreen does not count as a liquid and is allowed in your carry-on bag with no size limitation; it also does not need to be packed in your quart-sized liquid bag (love that for us.)

Ok, we just gave you a list of awesome shoppable options, and while all of these SPF choices are sun-worthy, your honeymoon destination can help you narrow down your decision. Like, what is the best sunscreen for the beach? What about colder climates? Let's quickly chat about the UV index, altitude and destination regulations you may want to consider when choosing your travel-size sunscreen.

SPF Levels: UV Index and Altitude

Just because your honeymoon is in the Swiss Alps doesn't mean you are exempt from needing sunscreen. In fact, elevation levels can drastically affect the amount of UV you are exposed to. In fact, according to Reuters, for every 1,000 feet of altitude, you gain around 10% more UV exposure. That means you have more exposure in the mountains than on the beach!

There's also the UV Index, which provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun. The index predicts UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a minimal risk of overexposure and 11+ means a very high risk. You can use your weather app or simply Google the city name and UV index today.

Regardless of where you spend your honeymoon days, it's recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that everyone apply a broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher around 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should be reapplied to the face and body approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Beach Benefits: Waterproof & Reef-Safe

Waterproof Sunscreen. If you plan on going for a dip in the pool or a morning run on the beach, your travel sunscreen must be sweat- and water-resistant. This means that it's designed to stay on your skin for anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes, even when you're sweating or swimming. Be sure to reapply water-resistant sunscreen after this time period or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreens are products that do not use UV-blocking oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are known to cause coral bleaching. When coral turns white, it causes severe stress and makes it susceptible to disease or death. The terms "reef-friendly" and "reef-safe are not currently regulated as of 2023, so be sure to check the ingredient label on the back of your travel-size sunscreen.

In the United States, Hawaii and the city of Key West, Florida , have banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. There has been a ban on sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene in the U.S. Virgin Islands as of March 2020. Then there's Australia , which has some of the strictest sunscreen regulations in the world, where products must undergo extensive testing before being placed on shelves.

Mineral vs. Chemical. The key difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens is that mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and blocks rays at the surface using ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while chemical sunscreens absorb rays like a sponge using ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.

Mineral sunscreens tend to be better suited for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin and are better trusted when it comes to concerns about reef safety. However, the formulas can be thick and potentially leave a white cast on those with darker skin tones. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, are lighter and less likely to leave an annoying white cast, but they can have ingredients that can irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Sunscreen Stick vs. Spray vs. Lotion: Does It Matter?

All sunscreen forms can provide great protection and coverage. It's all about personal preference and proper application. Spray sunscreen is easy to apply, but it can also easily end up being picked up by the wind as opposed to landing on your skin. Lotions and sticks, on the other hand, provide direct contact and are more likely to provide a thick layer of protection and stay on through a long day of sweating in the sun. So, if you're looking for a quickie, the spray is the way to go, but for maximal protection, a sunscreen stick or lotion is your best bet.

Ask Wirecutter: What’s the Best Way to Pack Sunscreen for Vacation?

Dear Wirecutter,

I’m getting ready for a family vacation, and packing sunscreen is really stumping me. Do I check bags to be able to bring larger bottles? Or should I just buy it at our destination?

The Transportation Security Administration’s rules regarding liquids have really put a wrench in the easy-breezy decision-making of packing for vacation. In the past I’ve filled my checked bag with so many bottles of sunscreen for my family of four that either we end up leaving them at our destination or I repack the extras at the end of the trip and bring them home, having given my Banana Boat a transcontinental getaway.

You need to check a bag if you want to bring more than 3.4 ounces of liquids, a category that includes sunscreen lotions and sprays , and your focus should be on ensuring that it reaches your destination intact.

But if you’re not checking a bag, you have a few creative options to ensure a sun-safe holiday. Here’s our best advice.

Bring protective clothing

Before we get into sunscreen math, consider protective clothing—UPF clothing, but also hats and sunglasses —for adults and kids alike.

“The best strategy is to minimize exposure to sun overall, especially in the hours around noon,” cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos told me in an email interview.

UV levels are at their highest midday since that’s when the sun is at its highest and its rays have the shortest distance to travel through the atmosphere, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (PDF) .

Calculate the amount of sunscreen you need

To decide how much liquid sunscreen to bring, consider the standard guidance for sunscreen application , which is to apply 1 ounce every two hours or after swimming or vigorous exercise.

Multiply the number of applications per day by the number of days of the trip to get your total application needs per person. For example, if you are going on a three-day trip and expect to be in the sun for six hours each day, the calculation is 3 ounces per day multiplied by three days, which equals 9 ounces of sunscreen per person. Then round up for good measure.

The TSA limits liquids at 3.4 ounces per container for carry-on. For checked bags, each container must not exceed 17 fluid ounces. Meanwhile, the “total aggregate quantity per person cannot exceed … 68 fluid ounces.”

If you were to bring the limit, that would amount to 68 applications per adult, which is more than enough for the average American’s trip. Your choices now are either to pack the sunscreen or buy it at your destination (or both!).

Stash facial sunscreen in your carry-on

More moisturizing, but stickier.

This moisturizing sunscreen is lightly scented and leaves a nice, dewy finish. It’s thick, though, and some testers had a hard time rubbing it in.

Buying Options

This formula is designed for the face and body. It rubs in easily and appears nearly transparent once applied. It has a light, pleasant scent and also comes in a large jug that’s relatively affordable on a per-ounce basis.

All of Wirecutter’s picks for the best face sunscreens come in packaging small enough to meet the TSA’s in-cabin requirements. Bringing facial sunscreen ensures that you have a sunscreen you prefer to use on one of the more-sensitive areas of your body (don’t forget to put it behind your ears and on your décolletage too).

Stick sunscreens also usually fall under the 3.4-ounce limit, so they would be let through in carry-on luggage as a liquid. Sticks are not ideal for full-body sunscreen application, but they can be useful for on-the-go reapplication.

If you need to transfer a small amount of sunscreen to another container, a general rule of thumb is to use the decanted sunscreen within a week or two, according to Dobos. Whenever possible, and especially over longer periods, it’s best to leave sunscreens in their original packaging, in part to reduce the risk of microbial contamination.

You may have seen posts on social media suggesting that you should never decant sunscreen from its original bottle into another container because doing so can make the sunscreen less effective. More research is needed to determine whether transferring a specific sunscreen to different containers—of varying materials, for different amounts of time, and with exposure to different environmental conditions—materially affects that particular formula.

If you’re not checking a bag, decanting larger bottles of your favorite body sunscreen into 3.4-ounce increments to carry on might be tempting, but for anything longer than a weekend trip, it’s probably not worth the effort. The TSA’s liquid limit for carry-on amounts to only three full-body sunscreen applications, and bringing multiple small containers for multiple people over multiple days (see the math above) is, well, a lot. It’s better to simply bring a larger bottle in your checked bag or to buy sunscreen at your destination.

Bigger bottles can go in your checked luggage

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

An easy-to-spread physical sunscreen.

This physical sunscreen lotion absorbs easily and is free of added fragrance. Although it can feel greasy and leave behind a white cast, it’s less visible on skin than most physical sunscreens.

Banana Boat Light As Air Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+

A nongreasy chemical sunscreen.

This easy-to-apply lotion lives up to its name, as it rubs in with a dry, transparent finish and appears nearly colorless on skin. It has added fragrance but not an overpowering sunscreen scent.

Even if you’re checking a bag, it’s still a good idea to pack your facial sunscreen (or any smaller-size bottles of body sunscreen) in your carry-on so that it stays with you and doesn’t go missing if your luggage is lost .

I asked Wirecutter staffers about how they pack bottles of their favorite body sunscreen to reduce the chance of leaks. (If you’re going somewhere ocean-adjacent, you may want to consider bringing a reef-safe sunscreen as well.)

One handy trick is to wrap the bottles in a bandana or a microfiber cloth , since the material will soak up any spills and can easily be hand-washed in a hotel-room sink.

You can then slide the bundle into a zip-top bag for safety so that any leaks are contained to the bag—and don’t end up all over your favorite breezy linen shirt .

Things get slightly more complicated if you’re trying to pack a pump bottle (I’m a huge fan of the 18-ounce Supergoop Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 ), since you have to worry about closing and locking the pump in place and then taping or rubber-banding it closed to try to prevent it from popping open. For this reason, I think bottles with screw tops or snap-close caps are a better choice.

Buy sunscreen at your destination

If you’re not checking a bag or don’t want the hassle of packing your sunscreen, purchasing at your destination is the way to go. Hotel and resort gift shops are often pricey, but you can try getting your sunscreen at a local grocery store instead.

You may not have a choice of your favorite brands, though, and in that case it’s time to read some labels. Look for a “broad spectrum” sunscreen labeled SPF 30 or above , per American Academy of Dermatology recommendations.

Ship it ahead of time

If you have allergies or other considerations that restrict you to using products with specific ingredients, you may be able to ship your preferred sunscreen to your accommodations. Call the hotel concierge or property owner to find out the best way to have your items delivered.

I know that all of this prep work may sound daunting, but a fun and sun-protected vacation is worth the effort. Have a great trip!

According to Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami, tanning oils are designed to “speed up the tanning process by attracting and focusing on the sun’s UV rays on the skin.” And sure, tanning oils might leave your skin feeling soft and supple—but a lot of them forgo SPF, which can result in everything from sunburns to hyperpigmentation , to serious issues like melanoma.

“Tanning oil is very different from sunscreen oil, because it does not protect the skin from sun damage,” says Brendan Camp, a double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City. “In fact, tanning oil helps facilitate the tanning process of skin: By reducing the refractive index, tanning oils increase the absorption of UV rays into the skin.”

On the other hand, Camp says, “Sunscreen oil is a form of sunscreen that is oil-based, so that it moisturizes and softens skin, and protects skin from ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen oils offer a sheer finish and leave skin with a glow.” Tanning oils and sunscreen oils do share some benefits, but the latter’s SPF protection is the key to keeping skin healthy. Before you fill your cart with formulas that promise a fresh-from-the-beach glow in no time, it’s vital to understand that.

But even with that out of the way, with so many oils to sift through, how do you know which is right for your needs? Start by perusing through our list below of the best sunscreen oils. From consistent crowd-pleasers to lesser-known finds that deserve a spot on your radar, the picks here are begging for some fun in the sun.

If you’re looking for a formula that has everything , you simply can’t go wrong with Sun Bum’s sunscreen oil. “It sprays on easily and hydrates skin while protecting it from the sun,” says Camp. Who are sunscreen oils best suited for?

With the right formula, sunscreen oils can work for everyone . However, thanks to the ultra-moisturizing ingredients typically used, sunscreen oils are a particularly good match for people with dry skin. “Normal and dry skin types may be most amenable to the use of [sunscreen] oils,” says Camp.“The oils in these products will act as an emollient to soften skin and make it smoother, as well as trap moisture into skin.”

That said, just because you don’t have dry skin, that doesn’t mean you have to write off sunscreen oil quite yet. “[Those] with sensitive or acne-prone skin may want to use sunscreen oils sparingly or opt for noncomedogenic formulas to avoid skin irritation or breakouts,” Chacon adds.

What to look for in sunscreen oil

When shopping for sunscreen oil, look closely at a formula’s ingredients. For example, Chacon recommends options that are packed with nourishing ingredients like argan, coconut, and avocado oils. (Jojoba oil and vitamins A, C, and E are also popular.) Of course, not all oils are created equal. “Avoid oils that contain ingredients like mineral oil, which can clog pores,” she says. Chacon also recommends avoiding sunscreen oils with added fragrances, which can be irritating. “Other factors to consider might include the oil’s scent, whether it’s water-resistant, and how easily it’s absorbed by the skin,” she adds.

How much SPF should you look for in a sunscreen oil?

While tanning oils offer very little (if any) sun protection, sunscreen oils will give you the coverage you need. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen products that offer a minimum of SPF 30, broad-spectrum coverage, and water resistance. Though higher SPFs will provide slightly more protection from UVA and UVB rays, a 30 rating remains a safe choice.

How to use sunscreen oil

Just because sunscreen oils are lighter in nature, that doesn’t mean the rules of application (and reapplication) differ from a traditional SPF. Camp adds that the American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors, so you’ll want to plan ahead. As with a typical cream or lotion, Chacon recommends reapplying sunscreen oil every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
