In a city with over three million people, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Chicago is a cultural center that is home to some seriously fun field trip destinations. But in a city so big, how do you choose the best spots? Don’t worry; we’ve done the research for you! Whether you are ready to don your armor and defend a mystical kingdom or take a trip back to the Jurassic era, Chicago has something for your and your students. Here are some of the best Chicago field trip ideas:

1. Are you brave enough to peer over the ledge?

On the Skydeck of the Willis Tower, brave students (and teachers!) can walk on a four-foot-wide glass-bottom balcony—103 stories high! Dubbed The Ledge , this is sure to thrill students of all ages! For students who may not love heights so much, there are plenty of other exhibits in the Skydeck, including games such as I Spy on High and scavenger hunts.

2. From farm to factory: How is ice cream made?

Oberweis is a popular dairy and ice cream shop in the Midwest, so most of your students have probably already tasted this deliciousness, but how many kids get to brag that they saw how their favorite ice cream is made! Visit the Oberweis factory at 951 Ice Cream Dr., Sweet One, North Aurora (cute, right?) and let your students see the behind-the-scenes workings of a real factory.

3. Travel back to the time of King Arthur.

A beautiful princess, daring jousting matches, and a feast fit for a king? Yes, please! A trip to Medieval Times is exciting for any student; there is a little something for everyone! When you book a field trip with a matinee show, your class will get even more: an educational presentation after your 90-minute show and a four-course luncheon. What a fun way to bring history to life!

4. Learn and play at the Chicago Children’s Museum.

Children’s museums are a popular field trip destination, and there are few better than the Chicago Children’s Museum . Students will love the hands-on nature of this museum, particularly the chance to dig for dino bones! Another favorite: the opportunity to explore a three-story boat—without any of the seasickness! If you’re planning a day at Navy Pier, this must be a stop on your adventure.

5. Watch the Bard come alive at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

If you’re an English teacher and plan to teach Shakespeare this year, be sure to plan a trip to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater . We know that Shakespeare isn’t always easy for students to understand, but seeing one of the Bard’s plays come to life allows students to experience a play as it was intended—live.

6. Take an architecture boat tour.

Part of what makes Chicago such a wonderful city is the unique tapestry of architecture.  Chicago Architecture Foundation river tours explore the city’s architecture from the vantage point of the river. Because this excursion boards from the River Walk, it allows you to explore the sights and sounds of the recently renovated walkway—complete with a gelato stand. This would be ideal for older students.

7. Go wild at the zoo.

When it comes to zoos in Chicago, you’ve got choices. There is the Lincoln Park Zoo, but if you’re planning a field trip, opt for Brookfield Zoo. This zoo offers awesome experiences that will thrill your students. Tropic World allows you to walk through the monkey exhibit, while the Bird Encounter allows students to hand-feed parakeets.

8. Reach for the stars at Adler Planetarium.

Studying the planets in science class? Take a trip to Adler Planetarium . From exhibits suitable for preschoolers (a giant space-themed play place) to exhibits and movies suitable for high schoolers, this destination has something for all learners.

9. Discover farm life at Fair Oaks.

Granted, this field trip destination is outside of the city (it’s actually in Indiana), but it’s the perfect opportunity for city slickers and suburbanites to experience a real working farm. Take a bus tour to watch how milk travels from cow to carton. Students can also see calves being born, watch baby pigs play, and play in the several areas. Fair Oaks plans three-hour adventures plus a 30-minute lunch. (P.S. Bring extra spending money if you’re a cheese lover.)

10. Time travel to the Jurassic period.

Do your students love dinos? Take a visit to the Field Museum where your students can see a variety of dinosaur skeletons, including the world famous Sue! The museum experts can even create a tour customized to the age of your students. Chicago and Illinois residents are free, but even an out-of-state ticket is reasonable at $17.75 per person.

11. There’s nothing fishy about the Learning Labs.

A visit to the Shedd Aquarium is more than just watching fish swim in giant aquariums. A visit to the Shedd is as hands on as an aquarium can be! From touching the sting rays (a seasonal offering) to petting a real-life starfish, students can interact with several types of marine life. There is also a play area for young students (across from the penguins) and several learning labs for high school students.

12. Extract your own DNA at the DNA Learning Lab.

The University of Notre Dame offers some seriously cool field trips. In the DNA lab , students can extract their own DNA or learn about forensics by solving a pretend crime (a kidnapped leprechaun, to be precise!). Although this field trip is in South Bend, Indiana, it is a feasible day-long field trip for any school in the greater Chicago area. Ideal for high school biology classes.

13. Become an Iron Chef.

What’s more fun than getting your hands dirty in the kitchen? Learning the science behind what makes your favorite recipes so yummy! With multiple menu options available, your students will love this cooking lesson at  The Chopping Block.

14. Take flight at iFly.

Who doesn’t dream of flying? At iFly , you can! This STEM-enriched program first teaches students about the physics of skydiving. Students then undergo “flight training” before they get to experience their own skydive in a giant wind tunnel. BRB as I go get ready.

15. Let the field trip come to you.

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum boasts something unusual: They can bring the field trip to you! When you book a classroom-based field trip, curators from the museum bring science-based, hands-on activities to your students. All of the fun without any of the travel!

16. Design your own house with the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust.

Venture to nearby Oak Park to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust . Students will not only learn about the vision and design behind the Wright house but they will get the chance to doing a little designing of their own. The Trust even offers lessons plans so you can prep your students before the field trip. If you can’t make it to Oak Park, you can rent equipment and host a design workshop in your own classroom!

17. Channel your inner Bill Nye at the Museum of Science and Industry.

The Museum of Science and Industry , located in Hyde Park, is a tried-and-true field trip destination. Where else can you venture deep into the heart of a coal mine, explore the depths of the ocean on a U-505 submarine, or learn about genes through the world’s cutest farm animal (baby chicks)?

18. Learn about art through making art.

The National Museum of Mexican Art offers hands-on learning! The work of art your students make will be influenced by upcoming Mexican holidays, so your students will learn a lesson in both art and history. Grab your painting smock and head over to Pilsen.

19. See history from a beautiful perspective.

Interested in a trip to the  DuSable Museum of African American History  but not sure where to start? As a Smithsonian affiliate, the DuSable has you covered. Grab your lessons plans  and guide your students through the amazing history of African Americans, from the brave heroines of the Civil War to the number-crunching African Americans who changed the world of mathematics. Did we mention there’s also a “mobile museum” that can bring the history to your school?

20. Make a stand for peace at the Hull House Museum.

Did you know the Hull House was once Jane Addams’ home? It was also a safe haven for immigrants, a nursery school, a hub for the Women’s Peace Party, and a school for ESL and cooking. Visit the Hull House Museum and see first hand how Jane Addams’ work led to her Nobel Peace Prize.

21. Write your own story at The American Writers Museum.

A trip to The American Writers Museum is part museum (see and touch real typewriters), part writing lab, and part write0in. This is great for English teachers who want to help foster of love of writing in their students!

The Museum of Contemporary Art proudly offers free guided field trips with free transportation to Chicago Public Schools. Registration is open for summer 2023 tours; please use the form on this page to request and email [email protected] with questions.

About Our Guided Field Trips

Learning in the galleries at the MCA happens through inquiry, dialog, play, experimentation, and collective meaning-making. Our educators facilitate conversation around art, ideas, and contemporary issues. They use contemporary art as a vehicle for developing skills in critical observation, interpretation, and inquiry. We build these learning experiences around four key principles:

• Give students agency. Prioritize the wisdom and experiences of young people.
• Make meaning together. Encourage students to understand art on the own terms and in community with one another.
• Explore new modes of learning. Create new, unexpected experiences outside of simple lecture and discussion.
• Prioritize reflection. Offer content, social context, facts, and historical information as opportunities for students to connect the art to their own lives.

If you would like to reserve a guided field trip, please use the guided field trip calendar . To book a self-guided field trip, use the self-guided field trip calendar . Select the date and time that works for you. You will receive a confirmation in your email. Please visit our Visit page for accessibility information, guidelines for your visit, and directions. Please organize your transportation to arrive as close to 10 am as possible.

The MCA covers the cost of bus transportation for all participating Chicago Public Schools. While we do cover the costs, we do not currently contact, schedule, or organize buses for schools. There are two options for taking advantage of this opportunity:

• One, your school may invoice the MCA for reimbursement. To receive reimbursement, submit an invoice for the cost of your bus to [email protected] with a current W9 for your school.
• Two, the bus company may invoice the MCA directly by sending their invoice and payment information to [email protected] . However, if the bus company needs to have a check in hand when they arrive at the MCA, we need at least 3 weeks to process payment.

We ask that your school make reservations two weeks in advance to avoid overcrowding the galleries, preserve the artwork, and secure your chosen date and time. To reserve a guided field trip, please use the guided field trip calendar . To book a self-guided field trip, use the self-guided field trip calendar . Select the date and time that works for you.

Your group can enter the museum at the main staircase located on Mies van der Rohe Drive. Buses can park temporarily at the side of the museum at 220 E. Chicago Ave.

At the end of each MCA email about your field trip, you will find “Make Changes to this event.” Hit the Cancel link or button, then Confirm, to cancel your field trip.

Yes! At the end of each email you receive confirming your field trip, you will find a link labeled “Need to make changes to this event? Reschedule.” You can click the Reschedule link or button to change the date and time of your field trip.

You will receive emails confirming your field trip’s date and time via the email address you entered for the field trip form.

Yes! Your students are welcome to stay in the museum to explore on their own with their chaperones.

All students are free of charge. Illinois teachers and chaperones are also free. Out-of-state chaperones and teachers pay $8 each to enter the museum the day of their visit. To receive a rate of $7 per chaperone and/or teacher, contact [email protected] at least 2 weeks before your field trip.

Yes. Each group of 10 students must be accompanied by at least one (1) adult chaperone or teacher.

Yes! You can arrange a self-guided field trip for your class. Visit the self-guided field trip calendar and select the date and time that works for you. Our Visit page has accessibility information, guidelines for your visit, and directions.

Thank you for bringing your school group to the museum! Please participate within reason, feel free to answer a couple of questions, and encourage participation from your class without singling students out. Our main ask is that you help MCA educators with classroom management. You know your class best, so please share with MCA educators any tips you have for getting students' attention, drawing answers out, and creating a brave and comfortable space. We ask that you stay engaged and avoid leaving the group or being on your phone.

We know it’s difficult to take time out of your schedule and curriculum to spend time with us and we understand that, as chaperones and teachers, you are incredibly busy after planning and leading the trip. Thank you.

Yes! Our Learning staff offer bilingual field trips in English and Spanish on guided field trips. Visit the guided field trip calendar and select the date and time that works for you, then fill in the information requested in the section on bilingual guides.

If you’ve registered for a guided field trip, you may remain in our Learning Studios after your experience to eat lunch. Otherwise, there are no lunch facilities on-site. There are a number of parks in the immediate area where bagged lunches may be eaten in the case of good weather as well as dining options in Water Tower Place.

Five Great Spots for STEM Field Trips in Chicago

Field trips aren’t just for the Senior Class and the band kids anymore! We get tons of inquiries for private tours from science and engineering teachers. To help with your field trip planning, we’re highlighting the best spots for STEM field trips in Chicago. Of course, we’re always happy to lead your charges on one of our private tours , like the Downtown Chicago Bucket List tour.

We research stories from Chicago history, architecture and culture like this while developing our  live virtual tours ,   in-person private tours , and  custom content for corporate events . You can join us to experience Chicago’s stories in-person or online. We can also create  custom tours and original conten t about this Chicago topic and countless others.

#1. Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is the perfect starting point for STEM field trips in Chicago. MSI is stuffed to the gills with fascinating scientific displays and exhibits. My particular favorites are the coal mine, the Pioneer Zephyr, and the artificial storm creator. I bet your students will demand to see U-505 , a German WWII submarine preserved after its 1944 capture. Also, don’t forget to tell your students that MSI is the only remaining structure from the famous 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. They can learn more about the World’s Fair in one of our virtual tours , too.

#2. Adler Planetarium

The smallest of the institutions out on Museum Campus might just be the perfect one for STEM field trips in Chicago. Adler Planetarium is, in fact, the first planetarium in the country, founded all the way back in 1930. These days, the star (hehe) attraction is The Universe: A Walk Through Time and Space . This general admission exhibit will lead your students on a walk to the furthest stretches of astronomy. You may also want to consider all-access passes so you can see one of the planetarium shows .

#3. Argonne National Laboratory

The National Laboratories are a likely career goal for many a STEM student. So why not visit the oldest of them, Argonne National Laboratory , out in suburban Lemont? Argonne dates back to the Manhattan Project, carrying out experiments that led to Chicago Pile-1 and the dawn of the atomic age. Student visitors to Argonne engage in Learning Labs , which are “hands-on experiments designed to educate participants on the major challenges that Argonne scientists and engineers are currently researching.”

#4. Fermilab

Chicago’s history of cutting-edge scientific research means we have two National Laboratories in the hinterlands. Fermilab , named after the Chicago-based physicist Enrico Fermi, is the Department of Energy’s particle accelerator. I won’t pretend to understand exactly what they’re doing out near Batavia. Your STEM students will enjoy visiting the spot where the “ Top Quark ” was discovered. Like Argonne, Fermilab offers Science Adventures for students, making this another great spot for STEM field trips in Chicago.

#5. McCormick Bridgehouse Museum and the Riverwalk

The Field Museum of Natural History is justly a go-to spot for STEM field trips in Chicago, and you may have expected it to round out our list. I want to highlight a smaller institution for your visit: the McCormick Bridgehouse Museum and the adjacent Riverwalk. The Bridgehouse Museum , located in the famous Michigan Avenue Bridge, explores both the natural history and human engineering of the Chicago River. Before or after their museum visit, students can explore the Riverwalk , a beautiful new addition to Chicago’s space.

There is no shortage of things to discover in Chicago—I love being an urban explorer and uncovering its hidden places. I have an MA in Public History from Loyola University Chicago, and I have worked as a museum educator and kindergarten teacher. My desire to learn new things fuels my passion for educating others, which I get to experience every day as a Chicago tour guide. I live in the northern neighborhood of Rogers Park.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, the vibrant history and modern majesty of Chicago never ceases to amaze. I’m a graduate of Columbia College with an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Art. I’ve worked for many years as an educator at City Colleges of Chicago. As tour guide at Chicago Detours, I integrate my enthusiasm for culture and architecture with my passion as an educator. West Town/Noble Square area is home for me.

With our Chicago neighborhoods, vibrant cultural institutions and nearly two centuries of larger-than-life stories, there’s never a dull moment here! I’m a fifth generation Chicagoan and a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to guiding tours, I’m a creative writer and amateur genealogist. I also enjoy the city’s dynamic theater scene. You can also read overlooked stories from 19th-century newspapers on my “Second Glance History” blog. I live in River North.

Chicago is unique as it always evolves into the future while holding on to the past. I’m fascinated by how people latch on to old architecture but happily pave over others. On Your Own Field Trips allow your students to explore while you lead them through the Chicago Botanic Garden. Science, language arts, literature, history, geography, art, and other subjects can be explored throughout the different gardens.

Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.      Available year-round for students and groups of all ages. (Some restrictions apply)      Advance registration fee: $0 per bus, includes parking and general admission for everyone; space each day is limited.

On Your Own Field Trip Reservation

Unregistered groups will be charged $65 for bus parking and $7.95 per child/$9.95 per adult (minimum) per person admission fee; minimum total cost for a group of 30 students on a bus will be over $300; significantly higher on busy days. Please register your group before you arrive, and ensure that all chaperones and bus drivers have a copy of the entry ticket to ensure free admission.

Enjoy these benefits of registering for an On Your Own Group Field Trip:

• Explore the Chicago Botanic Garden at your own pace.
• Small, chaperoned groups may visit the Model Railroad Garden (early May – early October) and Butterflies & Blooms (Memorial Day weekend – Labor Day weekend) free of charge. Note: Exhibition entry is first-come, first-served and based on availability. Only small, chaperoned groups will be admitted at a time and entry ticket must be shown at the ticket booth to receive the discount. On busy days, expect there to be a wait. Exhibitions are open daily, weather permitting.
• Access the public picnic area for lunch.

Bus Parking

Upon entry, the gatehouse attendant will direct you to your drop of and pick up location. Please make sure all teachers, chaperones, and bus drivers have a copy of the entry ticket to ensure free parking and admission to the Garden and exhibitions.

If a conflict arises, you may reschedule your visit once within the same season. Contact the Registrar’s Office at (847) 835-6801.

Food Consumption and Storage

On Your Own field trips have access to the public outdoor picnic area. Due to space restrictions, On Your Own groups are not permitted in the Garden View Café. Individuals may carry their lunches in backpacks or store lunches on the bus. In the event of rain, we suggest that groups eat on the bus. Help preserve the Garden’s serene atmosphere and maintain its unique and beautiful collections by keeping all food out of the gardens and trails.

Field trips are a unique opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom and discover new horizons, as well as bond with one another and their teacher. They are a chance to make memories with their classmates that will last a lifetime. A  school bus rental  allows you to safely transport students from their classrooms to their destination, but you will still need to decide where to take your students for the best fun but educational field trips in Chicago. We are lucky to have many possible field trip destinations within easy reach, so here are some Chicago field trips ideas.

#1. Garfield Park Conservatory

Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the best educational places in Chicago. Best geared for students in grades 3 to 8, it is a unique chance to get up close and personal with exotic flora from around the world through eight indoor display gardens and 10 acres of outdoor gardens.

#2. Chicago Athenaeum

The Chicago Athenaeum focuses on art and design in all its forms, including architecture, industrial and product design, graphics, landscape architecture, and urban planning. #3. Des Plaines History Center

#6. DePaul University Art Museum

If you are on a budget and are looking for free field trips in Chicago, then the DePaul University Art Museum should be on your list. The Museum features different Chicago-based artists with an accent on marginalized communities, including Latin American, African Diaspora, Asian Diaspora, women, Indigenous, LGBTQ, and others, in an effort to highlight the varied populations and communities within the city. 

The DePaul University Art Museum presents a mixture of temporary exhibitions, public programs, and a permanent collection which make any visit an ever-changing experience and one of the best places to go on day trips for middle and high schoolers.

#7. Chicago Children’s Museum

Pricing and information.

Illinois PreK-12 schools receive free Museum Entry, while out-of-state schools receive a discount. Discounted tickets are available for Giant Dome Theater films, temporary exhibits and tours.

Teachers can book a school field trip with the form below or by calling (773) 684-1414. Please reserve your visit four weeks in advance (or earlier for peak season in December, April and May). We will contact you by email within 3-5 business days to confirm your reservation request.

One chaperone per 10 students in grades 4-12 and one chaperone per five students in grades K-3 is admitted free. Let us know if you are a special needs group that requires additional chaperones. Our  chaperone guide  will help you provide instructions to chaperones during your visit.

We will ask for your lunch plan during your reservation process. When bringing your own lunches, a time and space for your lunch must be prearranged. There are two lunch options available :

• Pre-paid vouchers ($22 per person) good for one entrée, one side, and one canned water or fountain soda in the Museum Kitchen.
• Bring your own lunches (advance seating reservations required).

Payment and Cancellations

Full payment is due 14 days before your visit or your reservation will be canceled. Cancellations made less than 14 days in advance will not be refunded. Please provide your final group count 14 days before your visit; students or chaperones not included in the final count will be charged full-price admission.

If you are attending a Learning Lab, a $25 deposit is required within 10 days of making your reservation. Full payment is due 14 days before your visit or the lab will be cancelled. Labs cancelled with less than 14 days' notice will not be refunded. Based on availability, labs may be rescheduled for a $10 handling fee.

Arrival and Check-In

On weekdays, buses drop off and pick up at the Group Center, located on the west side of the Museum off Cornell Drive, just south of the parking garage entrance. Buses can only turn right into the parking lot; download our map (PDF) for details. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before any scheduled event or program.  Your reservation materials will confirm your assigned drop off location and provide directions.

We do not provide school bus or motorcoach parking. Visit Choose Chicago for bus parking options. Paid automobile parking is available in the Museum's underground parking garage.

Accessibility

The Museum is committed to providing a quality experience for all guests. Our  Sensory Map  and  Communication Book  can assist with your visit, and field trip organizers may be interested in our  Field Trip Social Narrative . You can request these items when you arrive at the Museum.

Schedule a hands-on Learning Lab

Our facilitated, hands-on  Learning Labs  provide in-depth learning experiences for school groups. Learning Labs (except Live from the Heart ) cost $150 to $170 and last 60 to 90 minutes.

Set expectations

The Museum offers 14 acres of exhibit space to explore! Set realistic expectations about how much your group can accomplish and what you want your students to learn. Our exhibits are designed to spark interest and engage the visitor. Rushing to see the entire Museum in one trip can be a frustrating experience. Use our  map  or  visit planning tool  to decide what to see and do.

The 12 Best Things to Do in Chicago

Famously known as “the Second City” (meaning second in population to New York), I feel like Chicago is often overlooked by travelers. It sees a fraction of the visitors LA and NYC receive, which is a shame, as it’s one of my favorite cities in the world .

Chicago is chock-full of world-class institutions, Michelin-starred restaurants, awe-inducing architecture, and verdant parks. There is a lot to do here and the city has a really rich history. I think more people should visit.

Sure, the winters are brutal. But, come spring, Chicago blossoms into a dynamic urban landscape of street life, outdoor cafés, and sunny parks when locals take over the outdoors to enjoy the few months of nice weather. (I don’t think you can really beat Chicago in the summer.)

To help you plan your visit, here’s my list of the best things to do in Chicago:

One of the first things I do when I arrive in a city is take a walking tour. They’re a great way to see the main sights, get the lay of the land, and connect with an expert local guide who can answer all my questions. Free Chicago Walking Tours hosts regular free tours that can introduce you to the city. You’ll get to see many of the coolest buildings in the city while also learning about the history of Chicago. The tour lasts a few hours. Be sure to tip the guide at the end!

For a more unique tour, try the Gangsters and Ghosts Tour . You’ll learn all about Chicago’s dark side and creepy past as you explore the Chicago Loop. The tour lasts two hours and really talks about one of the pivotal times in Chicago’s history. Even if you’re not a history buff like me, you’ll get a lot out of it.  

Located downtown, these gigantic parks provide a great place to hang out, have a picnic, or go for a run. People play chess here when the weather is nice and, during the summer, there are a lot of free concerts and events here. The larger Grant Park stretches along Chicago’s waterfront, while Millennium Park is the subsection where the famous “Chicago Bean” sculpture is located. This iconic work of public art is a must-see. And, starting at noon on the first and third Saturdays from April through November, the Chicago Cultural Center hosts walking tours focusing on the art of Millennium Park. It’s really interesting. I love strolling through the park or just chilling here with a good book on a nice day.  

To beat the crowds, skip a weekend visit as the place gets packed. Instead, go on a Monday or Thursday evening (they’re open late on Thursdays). You’ll have the place virtually to yourself.

111 S Michigan Ave, (312) 443-3600, artic.edu. Open Thursday-Monday 11am-5pm (8pm on Thursdays). Admission is $32 USD ( $40 USD for advance skip-the-line entry ). Daily tours (included in the price of your ticket) are offered at 1pm and 3pm.  

Chicago is an architecture lover’s dream. The very best way to take in its famed buildings is via a river cruise . This way, you can sit back and cruise down the canals while an expert guide provides context for what you’re looking at. The guides will give you a detailed history of the architecture. Some of the buildings you’ll see on the boat ride include the Tribune Tower, 333 West Wacker, Navy Pier, the Willis Tower, the Wrigley Building, and Marina City, among others. All in all, there are about 50 structures to see on this fascinating tour, and I promise, it’s much more interesting than it sounds!  

Often nicknamed “Mag Mile,” this stretch along Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street is known for its upscale designer boutiques. In fact, rent here is the third highest in the US (after Fifth Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills). Even if you don’t want to blow your budget shopping, it’s still an experience to stroll along the avenue and take in the sights and the people, and enjoy the view of the Chicago River. There are several landmarks and attractions along the way too, including the 360 Chicago Observation Deck for expansive views over the city (more on this below).  

If you’re visiting the city with kids (or you’re a kid at heart), head to the massive Shedd Aquarium. It’s the third-largest aquarium in the Western hemisphere and home to over 32,000 animals. They have turtles, penguins, sea otters, snakes, sharks, and more. They really emphasize education here so you’ll learn a ton while you roam the different exhibitions. You can even pay extra to do things like feed penguins and sharks, and they also host all kinds of fun evening events (such as live music after hours). I absolutely love coming here. Just make sure to book your ticket in advance as they do get busy and sell out!

To beat the crowds, skip the weekend and visit during the week instead. Also, try and visit right when it opens (especially Wednesday-Friday). It’s usually quieter then.

1200 S DuSable Lake Shore Dr, (312) 939-2438, sheddaquarium.org. Open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday (9pm on Tuesdays), 9am-6pm Saturday, and 11am-6pm on Sundays. Tickets start at $37 USD. Admission can also be included with the Chicago CityPASS .  

One of the biggest museums in the world, the Field houses extensive collections spanning anthropology, geology, botany, and zoology. Some important collections include the displays of taxidermied animals, a wing dedicated to astronomy, and fascinating artifacts from ancient Egypt. I recommend planning to spend at least 3-4 hours to really take it all in.

1400 S. Dusable Lake Shore Drive, (312) 922-9410, fieldmuseum.org. Open daily 9am-5pm (last admission is at 4pm). Basic admission is $30 USD . Special exhibitions are an additional charge (which varies), though you can get an all-access pass for $43 USD.  

Chicago is a skyscraper city, including a few rather iconic towers. Located atop what was formerly known as the John Hancock Building and now (uninspiringly) called 875 N. Michigan, the 360-degree viewing deck a thousand feet up and allows visitors to get the best view of the Windy City and Lake Michigan. You can even grab a pint at the Cloud Bar, which serves beer from Moody Tongue, a local brewery.

If you’re a thrill seeker and want more than just the view, sign up for Tilt. This part of the observation deck is where you can stand in front of a glass window, which then tilts forward, until it appears you’re looking directly down at the street, 94 floors below.

Just make sure to check the weather before you go so you will actually have a view to enjoy. Additionally, if you want to beat the crowds, come early (before 10am).

If you really want to indulge, hop on a Chicago Pizza Tour , on which you’ll get to sample all the varieties on offer in town. Tours start at $49 USD.  

Stretching from Lake Michigan to Lake Street, the 1.25-mile Riverwalk along the Chicago River makes for a fun stroll. Along the way, you’ll not only get fantastic views of the river and city, but you’ll encounter a legion of waterfront restaurants, cafés, and bars. There’s a ton of public art and green space too (great for picnicking and people-watching). It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the moment in this Midwestern metropolis, but if you prefer a more active experience, there are also lots of aquatic activities here too (such as kayaking or taking a river cruise).  

The neighborhood of Pilsen was founded in 1878 by Czech immigrants, who named the area after the fourth-largest city in the Czech Republic, where pilsner beer was born. The Czechs may be gone now, but today Pilsen is Chicago’s main Latino neighborhood, particularly Mexicans from the Michoacán region. Today you can wander the area, eating some of the best tacos while taking in the vibrant street art.  

The Second City is one of the most popular and well-known improv troupes in the country. It’s where greats like Bill Murray, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler all cut their teeth. They put on regular performances and also host all kinds of special events. They even host workshops and classes if you want to give improv a try yourself. Just be sure to get your tickets in advance as the most popular shows sell out fast.

600 E Grand Ave, (312) 595-7437, navypier.org. Open Sunday-Thursday 11am-8pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-9pm (individual attractions and restaurants may have separate hours). Admission to the pier is free, though attractions charge their own fees ( the Centennial wheel is $21.30 USD , for example).  

Home of the Cubs, Wrigley Field, on Chicago’s North Side, is smack in the middle of town. It also happens to be one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the United States (it opened in 1914). If you’re in Chicago during the baseball seasons (April to October) and the Cubs are in town, do yourself a favor and go to a game. It’s one of the most intimate and atmospheric baseball stadiums in the country. If the Cubs are not in town, you can also take a 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium.

Tickets to see a game vary greatly but start at just $10 USD (for better seats at a popular game, expect to spend closer to $80-125 USD).  

Bring your appetite to Chinatown, where you can feast on cheap dim dum, do karaoke, or relax at one of the many tea houses. One of the oldest Chinatown’s in the country, over a third of Chicago’s Chinese population lives in Chinatown, making it one of the largest concentrations of Chinese-Americans in the USA. Don’t miss Ping Tom Memorial Park, and keep an eye out for colorful murals around the neighborhood. Some of my favorite places here are Hing Kee, MCCB Chicago, and Phoenix. &nbsp

The tradition began in 1843, when Chicago’s first Irish parade was held, but it wasn’t until 1962 that the dyeing of the river started, at the suggestion of a plumber’s union, which is still responsible for the green river each year, though it won’t divulge its secrets about what’s used (it’s environmentally friendly, though). Take a river cruise on the emerald waters or snap a pic from the sidelines and enjoy. This is one of the biggest days of the year here!  

This whimsical little park, located in the Lincoln Park area, was created to honor L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz . He lived in the area at the end of the 19th century, and when the city wanted to renovate the park they decided to do so in a way that honored Baum’s popular book.

There’s a playground named after Dorothy, a green space called the “Emerald Gardens,” and numerous life-size statues of popular characters from the musical adaptation, including the Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.

Open daily 6am-11pm. Admission to the park is free.

Chicago doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I think it’s fun and perfect for a weekend getaway. And you really can’t beat the summers here either. With lots of interesting museums, plenty of green space, and some great eats, Chicago should be on every traveler’s list!

This free, daylong festival in Millennium Park features both local and internationally recognized gospel recording stars, including the Clark Sisters, a Grammy-winning family group from Detroit whose influence over six decades can be heard in contemporary R&B. Also on the bill: Grammy winner Anita Wilson, who is a Chicago native, and up-and-comers Chandler Moore and Lena Byrd Miles. Don’t skip the hourlong tribute to Chicago church choirs; it features three of the best — First Corinthian Voices of Victory, Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Choir and Fellowship Chicago. 201 E. Chicago House Music Festival

10 a.m. June 2 in Millennium Park

This year marks the 40th anniversary of House music, a Chicago creation that originated in the city’s Black and gay underground to become a global force in dance music. This annual festival transforms the park into a dance party. Daylong sets by DJs include Alan King and Wayne Williams from the Chosen Few, a DJ collective that helped innovate House in the late 1970s, as well as Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, who wrote some of the earliest hits for Chicago’s Trax Records. A second stage will feature the Queer Fam Pride Jam billed as a “youth and queer family-friendly event” featuring dance lessons and more DJ sets. 201 E. Randolph St., free.

Toronzo Cannon

7 p.m. June 6 at Space

With Buddy Guy retiring, Chicago’s Toronzo Cannon has emerged as the city’s next great ambassador of electric blues. Rather than mine the genre’s past, the South Side native draws from his decades of experience as a CTA bus driver to write songs about struggles in everyday life. His guitar playing and stage persona are both wildly entertaining, and his music feels overly modern, more than most contemporary blues players. This show is an album release party for Shut Up and Play! , his latest on Chicago’s Alligator Records. 1245 Chicago Ave. in Evanston, tickets from $16.

Chicago Blues Festival

10 a.m. June 6-9 at the Ramova Theatre and in Millennium Park

The world’s largest free blues music festival strikes a somber note this year when headliner Buddy Guy uses it as his final large-scale appearance in his adopted city. Other headliners include Mississippi blues and gospel singer Mr. Sipp; Memphis blues-soul band Southern Avenue; local guitarists Mike Wheeler, Ivy Ford, Melody Angel and Melvin Taylor; and tributes to past greats Otis Spann, Dinah Washington and Jimmy Rogers. The festival kicks off Thursday, June 6 at the newly renovated Ramova Theatre in Bridgeport and will include performances by guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks and powerful blues singer Shemekia Copeland. 201 E. Randolph St. (Millennium Park) and 3520 S. Halsted St. (Ramova), free.

Winnetka Music Festival

5 p.m. June 14-15 in downtown Winnetka

This is the eighth year for this North Shore indie music festival. This year, it features Seattle rock band Band of Horses, German rock duo Milky Chance, British soul singer Yola, the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans, singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter and Austin garage rockers Heartless Bastards. Lincoln Avenue and Pine Street in downtown Winnetka, tickets from $49.

Gerald McClendon

9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. June 14 at Rosa’s Lounge

The self-described “Soulkeeper” around town, Chicago native Gerald McClendon is a world-traveled R&B singer who captures the classic sound of Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding in his music, as well as the jazz vocalist era of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. 3420 W. Armitage Ave., tickets from $15.

Steve Dawson

7 p.m. June 16 at Space

This veteran singer-songwriter is a Chicago luminary for his deep catalog of records, both with his band Dolly Varden and collaborative solo efforts with Chicago’s free jazz community. He’s also a beloved songwriting teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and he often takes his instruction out of the classroom and into the recording studio, where he has recorded several albums by local songwriters. This is an album release show for Ghosts, his latest record on Chicago’s Pravda Records. 1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston, tickets from $15.

Blues on the Fox

7 p.m. June 16 and 3 p.m. June 17 in RiverEdge Park

The “other” annual blues festival in the Chicago area unfolds along the Fox River in Aurora. This year, headliners include pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, Chicago’s Toronzo Cannon, British guitarist and singer songwriter Joanne Shaw Taylor, blues-jazz guitarist Guy King and rock-blues band Big Head Todd and the Monsters. 360 N. Broadway, Aurora , tickets from $25.

New Static! Revival Now

7 p.m. June 20 at Schubas

This festival, now in its sophomore year, attempts to curate the most exciting — and youngest — bands on Chicago’s thriving indie music scene. On the bill this year are lo-fi noise pop duo Sharp Pins, rockers TV Buddha, the electronic soundscapes of Donkey Basketball and noise-pop band — and sibling duo — twin coast. 3159 N. Southport St., tickets from $15.

Cedric Burnside

8 p.m. June 25-26 at Schubas

The hill country blues of Mississippi sound much different than what you’ll hear in Chicago or anywhere else, and the only opportunity to hear it directly from the source is from the next generation of those who invented it. Cedric Burnside’s grandfather, R.L. Burnside, was a longtime musician who only gained prominence during the alt-rock era of the 1990s; Cedric — a guitarist and drummer — has carried the torch ever since. His minimalist sound and hard grooves create the backdrop of Hill Country Love, his latest record. 3159 N. Southport Ave., tickets from $20.

Sun Ra Arkestra

8 p.m. and 10 p.m. June 28 at Constellation

The pioneering composer, bandleader and otherworldly presence Sun Ra may no longer be with us, but his Arkestra continues his music throughout the world. This two-show stand features saxophonist Marshall Allen, who has been with the group since 1958, and more than a dozen players performing Sun Ra compositions. Expect many excursions ranging from big band swing to free jazz. 3111 N. Western Ave., tickets from $40.

American Music Festival

July 3-6 at FitzGerald’s

One of the most consistently rewarding events of the Chicago summer, this three-stage, multi-night celebration of American roots music offers something for everyone: Zydeco, blues, jazz, country, folk and beyond. Nikki Lane and Sierra Hull are headliners along with the Jayhawks, the Old 97’s and Robert Randolph & The Family Band, along with FitzGerald’s favorites like Marcia Ball, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, The Waco Brothers, Michael McDermott and Jon Dee Graham. Plus, there’s barbecue. 6615 W. Roosevelt Road, tickets from $65.

When Charlie Musselwhite was a teenager, he moved from his native Memphis to Chicago to hang out at South Side blues clubs and learn from the first generation of electric blues masters. Soon enough, the harmonica player became one himself. Making his name on the psychedelic blues scene on the West Coast, Musselwhite has built a long and distinguished career as a singer, sideman and composer, collaborating with everyone from Bob Dylan to Ben Harper. The Baseball Project

Summer is the natural time for this supergroup to emerge on concert stages to play perfectly crafted songs based on little-known stories of baseball history. If you’re not a baseball fan, no problem: The songs on Grand Salami Time!, the group’s most recent record, are perfect power pop fare for secular fans of the sport. International Festival of Life

This weekend of African and Caribbean art and music celebrates its 31st year. Teairra Marí

Def Jam Records veteran Teairra Marí most recently emerged through a series of mixtapes featuring cameos from Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy and Nicki Minaj. She’s also an occasional actress and reality show veteran. This show, billed as “the Ultimate Black Party” for Chicago Black Pride weekend, includes a series of guests including Stevia Smoke Da Rapper, GakTrizzy, ThizzMarley, Aki Da Rapper, Cash Da Trapper, Ok’Jaycen and DJ Gucci Roxx and DJ Brice. Frankfort Bluegrass Festival

10 a.m. July 13-14

One of the country’s largest bluegrass weekends of the summer happens in Chicago’s south suburbs every July. The festival spans two days and takes over four stages in Frankfort’s historic downtown, featuring groups from across the U.S. This year’s headliners include bluegrass veteran Peter Rowan and his band, Nashville singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale & The Po’ Ramblin Boys, Chicago’s Special Consensus, AJ Lee & Blue Summit from California. South Korea bluegrass even gets the spotlight, thanks to sets by Country Gongbang, a group that sings in two languages. Downtown Frankfort, free.

8 p.m. July 12 at the Hideout

Jah Wobble is widely known for his role as the bassist in Public Image Ltd (PiL), fronted by former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon. He has had a long solo career, too and is now credited as a pioneer in bringing dub music to the mainstream. The British musician has been a much sought-after collaborator throughout his musical life, having recorded with Baaba Maal, Sinead O’Connor, Brian Eno and Pharoah Sanders, and his pursuit of world rhythms continues to make him an influence on a wide range of music from industrial rock to hip-hop. For this show, he will perform dub arrangements to the 1979 PiL classic album, Metal Box. 1354 W. Wabansia St., tickets from $30.

6:30 p.m. July 15 in Millennium Park

As the youngest son of pioneer Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti is Afrobeat royalty. He began performing as a saxophonist and percussionist in Egypt 80, his father’s sprawling band, and he became the frontman once the elder Kuti died. In the decades since then, Kuti has made a name for himself as a formidable bandleader and vocalist who, like his father, channels urgent social and political messages through the music. 201 E. Out of Space Skokie

5 p.m. July 26-28 in Illinois Science + Technology Park Field

Out of Space, the annual festival on Evanston’s Canal Shores public golf course, moved this summer to neighboring Skokie while its original location gets restored. The indie rock lineup is just as strong, however. This year, headliners are Courtney Barnett with Bob Mould and Squirrel Flower (July 26), Thee Sacred Souls and St. Paul and the Broken Bones (July 27), and Guster with The Lone Bellow and Devon Gilfillian. 4900 Searle Parkway in Skokie, tickets from $49.50.

Charles McPherson Quartet

8 p.m. Aug. 1-4 at the Jazz Showcase

August is Charlie Parker month at the Jazz Showcase, and acclaimed alto saxophonist and composer Charles McPherson kicks it off. McPherson’s six decades as a bebop pioneer have led him from recording sessions with Charles Mingus and Art Farmer to collaborations with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and even incorporating bebop sensibilities into music he composed for the San Diego Ballet. 806 S. Broadway in Chicago

Calling all musical theater fans! Built to Spill

Built to Spill’s combination of psychedelic stoner rock and folk-rock lyricism has served as the foundation for music spanning several decades that has always remained timeless. This year is the 30th anniversary of There’s Nothing Wrong with Love, the band’s landmark second album. The Boise trio, led by guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Doug Martsch, performs the album in its entirety. 3730 N. Clark St., tickets from $40.

Chicago Jazz Festival

10 a.m. Aug. 29-Sept. 1 in Millennium Park

The annual celebration of both Chicago-based and international jazz is traditionally the city’s way to wind down summer in Millennium Park on Labor Day weekend. Look for a lineup announcement soon. 201 E. Randolph St., free.

Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival

Sept. 1-2 in Island Park

One of the longest-running music festivals in the Chicago area, this completely volunteer-run, Labor Day tradition takes place on a beautiful island in the Fox River and includes performances from renowned folk artists from across the U.S. and Chicago. Beyond the stages, expect music and storytelling workshops and a Sunday night barn dance. The 48th edition of the festival will feature Mark Dvorak, Sara Grey, Margaret Burk, Debra Cowan and the Donna Herula Trio — and many others — across seven stages. Rt 38 at Rt. 25, in downtown Geneva, suggested donations from $20.
