Waikiki Food Tour: The Best Places to Eat on Oahu

  • 28 April 2023 22 April 2023

The island of Oahu’s food scene is unmatched. Of all the types of cuisine in the world, Hawaiian might just be my personal favorite — and that’s saying a lot because I like everything! Needless to say, taking a self-guided food tour when visiting Waikiki is an absolute must.

From local diners with island food like poke and poi to food trucks, hidden gems, and everything in between, here are the absolute best places to eat and drink in Waikiki !

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links. When you purchase through links on my site, I may make a small commission (at no extra cost to you!).

Book an Oahu food tour

Diamond head, book a flight to honolulu, waikiki food tour map.

How to use this map : Click “View larger map” in the top right corner. From there, you can view each location and save your favorites to your own Google Maps lists!

Guided food tours vs. self-guided walking tour

You might be wondering whether booking a food crawl with a tour guide is worth it.

Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong by taking a self-guided Hawaii food tour. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s awesome if you’re traveling on a budget !

A great way to experience all the incredible food Waikiki has to offer is to save all of the best spots to a Google Maps list (you can use the one above as inspiration!). You can then map out all of the excellent places you plan to visit in advance.

Get an early start and go on an empty stomach — you’ll need it to tackle all of the best authentic local food joints!

Of course, booking a guided tour can be a great way to get a taste of the local flavors if you have the budget for it. The one listed below is highly rated and lets you sample several different dishes. Plus, you get to take in all of the breathtaking scenery with a local guide!

Waikiki food tour: Best restaurants in Waikiki

Marukame udon.

Marukame Udon (also spelled Marugame Udon) is a great place to come if you’re looking for fresh and authentic Japanese udon noodles, rice bowls, and tempura.

The kitchen here is an efficient, well-oiled machine. Each staff member has their own job, working in an assembly line fashion to put your bowl of noodles together. You can even watch them make and stretch the noodles in the back!

You can tell everything is made in-house because it’s absolutely delicious. This is definitely a must-visit Waikiki restaurant!

One thing to note is that Marukame Udon always has a line out the door. It looks intimidating, but because of the efficient assembly line, it actually moves pretty quickly!

Marukame Udon is open every day from 10 am to 10 pm.

Address : 2310 Kuhio Ave #124

Waikiki food tour: Marukame Udon, Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii

MATCHA Cafe MAIKO

Right next door to Marukame Udon, you’ll find Matcha Cafe Maiko , an incredible spot for all things matcha. You can find matcha-flavored shave ice, parfaits, soft serve, and a variety of fun blended drinks.

The drinks and desserts they serve are a unique blend of Japanese and island culture. They’re massive, relatively inexpensive, and have a delicious flavor!

In my opinion, getting a matcha latte float after inhaling a bowl of noodles is the best way to end a wonderful day in Waikiki.

Matcha Cafe Maiko is open every day from 11:30 am to 9 pm.

Address : 2310 Kuhio Ave #143

Kona Coffee Purveyors | b.patisserie

Kona Coffee Purveyors is an amazing cafe in downtown Waikiki that serves up their own roasts of 100% Kona coffee . Their open kitchen also bakes modern Parisian & Viennese-style pastries (it’s an offshoot of San Francisco ’s b.patisserie!).

We got the Kona cold brew, chocolate banana almond croissant, and lilikoi strawberry Kouign Amman — all were fantastic.

Like Marukame Udon, Kona Coffee Purveyors always has a line around the block. We showed up about 20 minutes before they opened in the morning and there was already about 30 people queued up in front of us.

The wait wasn’t too bad, though, and the coffee and pastries were 100% worth it!

Kona Coffee Purveyors is open every day from 7 am to 4 pm. Come early to make sure the pastries you want aren’t sold out, though!

Address : 2330 Kalakaua Ave #160

Waikiki food tour: Kona Coffee Purveyors, Honolulu, Hawaii

Duke’s Waikiki

Duke’s is a Honolulu institution. Located right on Waikiki Beach, they offer tons of different menu options , like seafood, meat, bar snacks, and desserts. They also make fruity tropical cocktails — sign me up!

The restaurant is named after native Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympic medal winning swimmer and the father of modern surfing. He lived through the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and saw it become part of the United States , an important moment in the history of Hawaii.

The atmosphere at Duke’s is so much fun. With outdoor beachfront seating and live entertainment, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and soak up the natural beauty of a golden Hawaiian sunset.

Duke’s Waikiki is open every day from 7 am to 12 am for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.

Address : 2335 Kalakaua Ave #116

Hideout Bar

Located inside the Laylow Waikiki hotel, the Hideout bar and lounge is a good time. It has an airy and tropical vibe, tasty food and drinks, and plenty of seating to enjoy the rooftop view.

Since we were staying at the hotel, we came to the Hideout for both breakfast and after-dinner drinks and were pleasantly surprised both times. Our breakfast choices, the eggs Benedict and the braised short rib skillet, were delicious and very filling.

In the evening, I loooved seeing their relatively extensive list of gins! We enjoyed our gin & tonics at the bar and listened to some awesome live music.

The Hideout is open every day for coffee and breakfast from 6 am to 11 am. At dinner, they’re open from 5 pm to 9:30 pm (11:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

Address : Inside the Laylow Waikiki, 2299 Kuhio Ave

Banan Waikiki Beach Shack

Banan is an adorable hole-in-the-wall shop near Waikiki Beach that serves banana soft serve, smoothies, and blended drinks. Everything on the menu is fully vegan except for their locally-sourced honey!

They use local fruits like papaya, pineapple, and passionfruit as toppings for their delicious bowls. You’ll also find other authentically tropical flavors, like shaved coconut, puffed quinoa, and mac nut honey butter.

Grab yourself a frozen treat and head down Waikiki Surf Alley to enjoy it on the beach!

Banan Waikiki Beach Shack is open every day from 8:30 am to 8 pm.

Address : 2301 Kalakaua Ave

Doraku Sushi

Doraku is my go-to spot for sushi, sashimi, and lychee martinis. Their Waikiki location also has a nice patio that overlooks the garden of the Royal Hawaiian Center.

Every time we come here, we end up ordering about half the menu. And honestly, you can’t go wrong! All of the sushi rolls, appetizers, and hot dishes that we’ve gotten have been incredible.

Best of all, they have a really fantastic and inexpensive happy hour menu (hot dishes are $5-7, rolls from $8-11, and cocktails for $11). You really can’t beat those prices, especially in Oahu’s most popular tourist destination!

Doraku Sushi is open every day from 11:30 am to 10 pm (11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Happy hour runs from Monday through Friday, 4 to 5 pm.

Address : 2233 Kalakaua Ave Suite 304

Waikiki food tour: Doraku Sushi, Honolulu, Hawaii

Sato Seafood

Although it’s a tough decision to make, Sato Seafood might have taken the top spot as my favorite place to get poke in Waikiki.

Located in the same plaza as Marukame Udon and Matcha Cafe Maiko, Sato Seafood is often overlooked by those that come to wait in line for noodles. In my opinion, this place is criminally underrated — the poke bowls are out of this world good!

They have tons of flavor options to choose from, and you can customize your bowl’s base and type of fish. The shoyu ginger poke with ahi tuna was my personal favorite.

Sato Seafood is open every day from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm.

Address : 2310 Kuhio Ave #215

Waikiki food tour: Sato Seafood, Honolulu, Hawaii

A very close runner-up, Poke Fix makes super flavorful poke bowls and burritos with very generous portion sizes.

If you choose to build your own bowl, everything is fully customizable, including the base, protein, toppings, and sauces. Besides the standard tuna and salmon, they also offer more unique options like Japanese scallop, octopus, and tofu.

I got my bowl with spicy salmon, Hawaiian-style ahi tuna, avocado, seaweed salad, and kimchi. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and were absolutely divine.

Poke Fix is open Thursday through Tuesday, 11 am to 7 pm. They are closed on Wednesdays.

Address : 334 Seaside Ave #108

Waikiki food tour: Traditional Hawaiian food to try

In traditional Hawaiian cuisine, people make Kalua pork by slow-roasting a whole pig in an imu , an underground oven. They season the pig and cook it until the meat becomes tender, smoky, and savory enough to fall off the bone.

Native Hawaiians served Kalua pork at special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and religious ceremonies. Today, it’s also a staple at Hawaiian luaus!

You can try Kalua pork at Kono’s Northshore and Hula Grill .

Poke is my all-time favorite traditional Hawaiian food. It’s made with cubed raw fish and seasoned with a variety of different oils and sauces, and is often served over rice or as a salad.

Poke bowls are fresh, healthy, and absolutely delicious. They usually feature ahi tuna, but you can also opt for other types of fish, such as salmon, octopus, or shrimp.

There are tons of places in Hawaii to try poke. The restaurants I’ve listed above are incredible, but you can also get really good poke from any local supermarket.

Exotic fruits

Honolulu is home to a variety of exotic fruits that you can’t find in other parts of the world, like rambutan, pitaya (dragonfruit), carambola (starfruit), and lychee. These fruits are known for their unique flavors, textures, and vibrant colors.

You’ll find places to try exotic fruit all over the island of Oahu. Try a lychee martini or an açaí bowl with pitaya.

Spam musubi

Another popular Hawaiian snack is spam musubi, which consists of grilled Spam, a slice of fried egg, and a block of rice wrapped in dried seaweed. It’s a simple yet delicious treat that people often enjoy on-the-go or as a midday snack.

This unique snack is actually an important part of Hawaiian culture and cuisine. Spam was introduced to Hawaii during World War II and quickly became a staple food for soldiers and locals alike.

Today, you can find spam musubi in convenience stores, local markets, and food trucks.

Macadamia nuts

Although originally from Australia, macadamia nuts are now a common feature in Hawaiian cuisine, with farms all around Oahu. These nuts are a key ingredient in various traditional Hawaiian dishes, including macadamia nut-crusted fish and haupia (coconut pudding).

You can buy packets of macadamia nuts from any supermarket or ABC store. Or try macadamia nut milk in your latte!

Shave ice is a popular Hawaiian dessert similar to a snow cone. It’s made by (surprise surprise) shaving a block of ice and adding flavored syrups and other toppings like condensed milk, mochi balls, fresh fruit, or azuki beans.

In Waikiki, you can try shave ice from Lahaina Shave Ice , Ice Monster Hawaii , or Aloha Icelabs .

Waikiki food tour: Matsumoto's Shave Ice, North Shore Oahu, Hawaii

Other things to do in Waikiki (and beyond)

Kualoa ranch.

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000-acre nature reserve and working cattle ranch on Oahu’s east coast. In the past, the ranch was used as a filming location for many popular movies and TV shows, including Hawaii Five-O, Jurassic Park, and Jumanji.

With jagged mountains and valleys overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Kualoa Ranch is unbelievably beautiful. It offers a variety of outdoor activities and tours, like horseback riding, ziplining, and movie site tours.

USS Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona Memorial is a national monument located in Honolulu’s Pearl Harbor. It’s dedicated to the memory of the 1,177 sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Visitors can take a boat tour to the memorial, which sits over the sunken remains of the ship. On nearby Ford Island, you can also visit the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, which is dedicated to preserving WWII-era aircraft.

Situated on Oahu’s southern coast, Diamond Head State Monument is a volcanic cone and popular hiking destination with stunning views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.

The hike to the summit is relatively easy, with some uneven terrain and staircases. Unfortunately, the hike is also super crowded, and you’ll need to reserve a time slot to hike it in advance.

Waikiki food tour: Diamond Head hike

How to get to Waikiki

To get to Waikiki, you’ll need to fly into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu. You can find nonstop flights to other islands in Hawaii (like Big Island and Maui), other US cities (like San Francisco ), and international destinations (like Auckland and Tokyo ).

To get to Waikiki from Honolulu Airport, you can either take the bus , catch an airport shuttle , or use a rideshare app like Uber or Lyft.

Where to stay in Waikiki

If you’re planning to stay in the Waikiki area during your trip to Oahu, you can expect to pay a lot for accommodation. Unfortunately, the demand is wayyy higher than the supply, leading to a lot of dumpy, overpriced hotels.

Here are a few of the best Waikiki hotels I could find that don’t cost an arm and a leg:

Budget | The Beach Waikiki by ALOH — With an average rating of 9.4 on Hostelworld, this is one of the best-rated hostels in Waikiki! They offer both mixed and female-only dorm rooms, as well as private rooms for a little bit more.

Mid-range | Waikiki Central Hotel — What this hotel lacks in style and charm, it makes up for in value for money. It’s basic, but it’s also clean, quiet, and has an average rating of 8.6 on Booking.com.

Bougie | The Laylow, Autograph Collection — This is where we stayed during our time in Waikiki and we loved it. It’s located only a few minutes away from the beach and from a bunch of different restaurants. The open-air hotel bar also has live music every single night!

A Foodie’s Guide to Waikiki

I am a major foodie and Instagram worthy delicious tasting treats are my favorite! Here are my fave spots in Waikiki Beach for delicious and photo worthy food, in no particular order. For more info on each restaurant, just click on the name and it will take you directly to their website!

food tour waikiki

Duke’s Hula Grill Waikiki 2335 Kalakaua Ave Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

Duke’s has a fantastic location directly on Waikiki beach. Dine in this fun setting on a break from the beach, or swing by just for dessert and drinks. First item to grab is their signature Mai Tai. It comes in a tiki cup and is sweet to the taste. For lunch I grabbed the pulled pork sandwich and Travis got the Hawaiian Pineapple Bacon Burger. My sandwich was delicious and very juicy (also messy). Travis ate his up before I could taste a bite and also said it was great.

food tour waikiki

For dessert grab a slice of Hula Pie. This is basically a mountain of vanilla ice cream topped with fudge, macadamia nuts, and an oreo crust. We honestly couldn’t finish it between the three of us, it is huge.

food tour waikiki

Sky Waikiki 2270 Kalakaua Ave Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

Okay I’ll be honest, this spot is more about the view versus the food. Sky Waikiki is a rooftop restaurant, bar, and nightclub located in the heart of Waikiki. Dinner hours are open to all ages and reservations are highly recommended. We weren’t very hungry since we ate a huge lunch so we got the Slider Trio to share. It comes with a Lobster Salad Slider, Teriyaki Pork Slider, and Garlic Chicken Slider. My favorite was the Teriyaki Pork coming close in second was the Lobster.

food tour waikiki

Surf Lanai at the Royal Hawaiian 2259 Kalakaua Ave Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

This gorgeous beach side restaurant is located inside one of the most historic resorts on Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian. We chose to check it out for breakfast (only open breakfast and lunch). We did not make reservations and we were able to walk in. They have some indoor seating as well as outdoor seating which all include a fantastic view of the ocean. Two popular breakfast dishes are the Pink Palace Pancakes and the Royal Bake Shop Banana Bread French Toast. I decided on the pancakes and they did not disspaoint. They were also the perfect size for me topped with cream and fresh fruit. Travis decided on “The Works” Omelette.

Honolulu Coffee Company Multiple Locations on Oahu www.honolulucoffee.com

food tour waikiki

This is one of my favorite quick eats in Waikiki, and I’ll usually swing by for breakfast or an afternoon pick up. Honolulu Coffee Company has my favorite Acai’i Bowls. I grab the classic and add honey on top. If you’ve never had an Acai’i Bowl, its basically a cross between a yogurt parfait and a fruit smoothie. It is made of blended dragonfruit and topped with strawberries, bananas, blueberrries, and house made granola. My favorite coffee here is the Peaberry blend. Hawaii is the only place I have ever seen it and its my favorite!

food tour waikiki

Honolulu Cookie Co 18 Locations on Oahu www.honolulucookie.com

food tour waikiki

Honolulu Cookie Co is a great place to grab gifts for your friends and family back home. Their cookies are my favorite to snack on and they make better gifts than those tacky souvenir items. Each location has a sample bar where you can try each flavor to determine your favorite before you buy. There are all kinds of different boxes and combinations, even a make your own. My personal favorite are the chocolate chip macadamia nut.

food tour waikiki

Aloha Table 2238 Lauula Street Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

This place may look like a hole in the wall but trust me, its a hidden gem. This was my favorite meal for Hawaiian food (Travis’ 2nd Favorite) and it was very reasonably priced compared to the other restaurants we ate at. This place is the spot for local Hawaiian food. I grabbed the Kaua’i Shrimp and Sweet Corn Mac & Cheese while Travis got the famous Loco Moco. Loco Moco is a kobe style beef patty on a bed of rice with gravy and topped with an egg. I absolutely LOVED mine and am going to try to re-create it after we get home. Travis’ was pretty tasty as well. WE split the Mango Custard for dessert and it was so creamy. I’m a fan of mango and loved it but Travis is not and did not.

food tour waikiki

Kokoro Cafe inside Royal Hawaiian Center 2233 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

Kokoro Cafe is the best spot to grab a sweet treat to eat while you’re walking the bustling streets of Waikiki. We grabbed the most popular item on the menu, the Shaka-Boom. This is a Shaka shaped waffle cone with your choice of filling, ice cream, and toppings. We went with coconut cream filling, Dole Whip ice cream, and fruity pebble topping. SO good! Instead of cone its more like a waffle, which makes it even more delicious in my eyes. We also got a Mochi-Pop which is a sweet waffle doused in sugar and whatever toppings you’d like, there are different flavors to choose from.

food tour waikiki

McDonalds Multiple Locations on Oahu

food tour waikiki

Okay, I know you may be thinking why I’m putting McDonalds on this list, but its a cheap place to get a local favorite. You can often find local specialties at McDonalds around the country (and world) and Hawaii is no different. Swing by for breakfast and grab an order of Spam and eggs. It will also come with white sticky rice and we enjoy it so much we make it at home sometimes! Plus you cant beat $4.

food tour waikiki

Mac 24/7 inside Hilton Waikiki Beach 2500 Kuhio Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

Mac 24/7 is located inside the Hilton which is actually where we stayed on our most recent trip to the island. As you could’ve guessed, it is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. There is a bar/diner section as well as a nice sit down dinner table area overlooking the beautiful garden. I ordered the Surf N Turf and Travis got the Aloha Mac. My dish was absolutely delicious! Some of the best shrimp I’ve ever had and my steak was cooked perfect. Travis’ dish was basically a Hawaiian BBQ extravaganza with ribs, chicken, and ahi tuna. we also enjoyed the large drinks, I ordered a Blue Hawaiian and Travis grabbed the Lava Lava Rocks. We had plenty of leftovers to take back to the room as they were generous sized portions. If you’re feeling extra hungry try one of the challenges! The Mac Daddy Pancake Challenge is a 5 lb stack of pancakes you need to finish in under 90 minutes and it’s free! The MAC Momma Cheeseburger Challenge is a 5 lb cheeseburger you’ll need to finish in under 45 minutes. Complete either of these and your photo will be hung up in the hall of fame!

Eggs n’ Things Multiple Locations on Oahu www.eggsnthings.com

food tour waikiki

Here is one of the best spots to grab Breakfast on the island! I’m the type of person that likes sweet stuff for breakfast and Eggs n Things pancakes are unbeatable! There are tons of flavors to choose from but this trip we enjoyed the Fresh Fruit Rainbow Pancakes. This giant serving filled all three of us! Also make sure you try their specialty pancakes syrup flavors including guava and coconut.

Uncle Tetsu inside Royal Hawaiian Center 2233 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 98615

Uncle Tetsu is located inside the food court close to Kokoro Cafe so you can hit both of these at the same time! They’ve got mochi donuts and they are so yummy! I grabbed a strawberry flavored one but they’ve got other unique flavors like coconut, matcha, taro, and honeydew. These donuts are only $2 or 4 for $6.

Island Vintage Coffee Multiple Locations on Oahu www.islandvintagecoffee.com

Another favorite spot of mine to grab an Acai bowl is Island Vintage Coffee! They’ve also got good coffee and sandwiches. Plus, their french macaroons are giant and delicious. The one we grabbed was Birthday Cake Flavored.

Leonard’s Bakery 933 Kapahulu Avenue Honolulu, HI 96816

food tour waikiki

No matter what time you visit Leonard’s Bakery, there is going to be a line out the door waiting to order these Portuguese Donuts called Malasadas. They are open 5:30 am to 11:00 pm daily. These donuts basically look like a giant fluffy dinner roll doused in sugar. The original (sugar) are the most popular though they have many flavors. We tried the coconut filled, guava filled, original, and cinnamon sugar. I will say my favorite was the original. They also have other bakery items that were equally as scrumptious, we got the blueberry mango cheesecake and guava muffin.

The Beach Bar at the Moana Surfrider 2365 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

Here’s another restaurant located on Waikiki Beach with fantastic views! This is the poolside restaurant located inside the very first resort built on Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider. Over this area is a Banyan tree hundreds of years old that provides a shady atmosphere perfect for the hot weather. They also had a live band playing the night we went. The menu changes seasonally and when we visited I ordered a Lobster Roll sandwich, it was delicious!

Moana Terrace Bar & Grill Located by the Pool at the Marriott 2552 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

I’m pretty convinced that you cant go wrong with food in Hawaii. We honestly did not eat a bad meal our entire trip. We stopped by the Marriott Waikiki Beach and ate lunch at their poolside restaurant, the Moana Terrace. I ate the Marriott Burger and it was giant, juicy, and delicious. The crinkle cut fries were a favorite of ours too. Since its located on top of the building by the pool it overlooks Waikiki Beach.

Waikiki Grass Shack Bistro 2453 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

food tour waikiki

I had been craving a drink inside a full size pineapple since we arrived on the island and while there are a few options, the Island Surfer was my favorite! It is a blended icee type juice drink (non-alcoholic) that comes in a pineapple with a skewer of oranges and a cherry on top. It was the perfect cool down for a day at the beach and only $14.95.

Banan Acai Multiple Locations on Oahu www.bananbowls.com

food tour waikiki

If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m obsessed with Acai bowls. I get as many as I can because they are one of my favorite foods on the islands. I have to say that Banan is my favorite. Thier bowls are actually made with a dairy free ice cream made from bananas (hence the name). I got the banana/acai twist in a mango boat and it was to die for!

Lulu’s Waikiki 2586 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, HI 96815

Lulu’s is at the far end of Waikiki and right next to the Honolulu Zoo! It’s got overlooking beach views and more good food. I got the Grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich and Travis ordered the fish tacos. Both were fantastic!

Cast member Jennifer Lopez attends the premiere for the film ‘Atlas’ at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles, on May 20. Lopez said today that her “This Is Me… Live” Summer concert tour has been canceled so she can take time to be with her family.

LOS ANGELES >> Jennifer Lopez said today that her “This Is Me… Live” Summer concert tour has been canceled so she can take time to be with her family.

Representatives of Live Nation also announced today that the “On the Floor” singer needs a break to be with “her children, family and close friends.”

Lopez wrote on her website onthejlo.com that she is “completely heartsick and devastated” about letting her fans down.

“Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again,” she added.

The tour cancellation comes amid rampant speculation in the media that her marriage to actor Ben Affleck is on the rocks and may lead to their separation.

Lopez had already canceled seven dates of the North American tour in early May.

The 54-year-old was going to be performing songs from her recent 2024 album “This is Me…Now” as a companion to the Amazon MGM documentary of the same name.

Both the album and the documentary were released in February with the album peaking at number 38 in the Billboard album charts.

The tour was originally supposed to begin in Orlando, Florida on June 26 and finish on Aug. 17 in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Golfers at UNC Health Championship honor Raleigh native and PGA Tour winner, Grayson Murray

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — More than 150 professional golfers headed to the Raleigh Country Club Thursday to compete in the UNC Health Championship.

The four-day event is part of the Korn Ferry Tour that helps support the hospital and local partners in the community.

Raleigh native Grayson Murray, PGA Tour winner, dies at 30 just a day after withdrawing from Colonial

Tournament Director Brian Krusoe said about 700 volunteers and UNC Health and golf course staff help bring the event together.

He said, “The former tournament, the Rex Hospital Open, started in 2005 and we’ve raised over $10 million for charity. We’re continuing the tradition at the Raleigh Country Club and we’ve always been tied in with the community, had a lot of exciting memories, finishes, and friendships… all kinds of things over the years. It’s something we take a lot of pride in.”

Krusoe said it’s the second time the competition has been held at the Raleigh Country Club and the first time the total purse has increased to $1 million.

Golfers from across the country, including Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, came out to compete on Thursday.

Parents of PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray: ‘He rests peacefully now’

“The comfort level of being at home, staying with my folks and having some of my mom’s good cooking, knowing where I’m going, knowing the golf course, knowing the people and having a bunch of supporters out here, it’s wonderful,” Jenkins said. He added, “I think this is my sixth time playing now and it never gets old playing a home game.”

Jenkins, who scored a 67 on Thursday, said the competition has stirred a mix of emotions. His focus wasn’t just on the game, but also a dear friend.

The tournament comes days after the death of 30-year-old Grayson Murray. The two-time PGA Tour winner, born and raised in Raleigh, died by suicide on May 25 from suspected carbon monoxide. Officials said Murray withdrew from a tournament in Fort Worth, Texas the day before.

“It’s really been a difficult week for me to wrap my head around and I’ve had to answer a lot of questions about him. I hope everyone understands just how genuinely kind, competitive, and caring he was—because he really was,” Jenkins said.

Murray and Jenkins grew up playing golf together, both at the country club and at Wildwood Green where Murray used to live and where Jenkins still plays and practices.

“I just reached out to his parents yesterday and didn’t say much…,” Jenkins said. “There really wasn’t much I could say other than I’m sorry.”

Bill and MaryBeth Webb who came out to the competition at the Raleigh Country Club as spectators said it’s not the first time they’ve come to watch.

Grayson Murray rallies late to win Sony Open in a 3-way playoff

Bill said, “When the tournament was in Wakefield, which is up near Wake Forest, we actually followed Grayson for nine holes once… It’s just a sad event, it’s an awful thing to have happened.”

Krusoe said Murray was a familiar face to many.

“We miss Grayson very much and it’s tough because he has such a long history with our tournament and our community being from here. He played in the tournament many times and almost won, he was involved in junior clinics… it’s been very tough,” said Krusoe.

Krusoe pointed to a bag with Murray’s name on display at the first hole on the course. Others wore green ribbons to help spread awareness for mental health. Krusoe said they plan to have an honorary tee ceremony Sunday afternoon for Murray.

“He won’t be forgotten here at this tournament,” Krusoe added.
