'It’s all about the music, it’s all about the dancing,' Detroit Movement festival fans say

Detroit — The energy was lively as techno fans flocked to Hart Plaza on the Detroit riverfront on Sunday for six stages, a lineup of performers and bass loud enough to shake a music lover to the core.

The three-day electronic Movement Festival features a techno music experience with live performances, the pulsing of the crowd and a view of the river.

“Let’s party and let’s dance,” said Dana Nyquist of Detroit, who was with friends at the festival.

Crowds that arrived early at the annual electronic music festival listened to the opening DJ sets, feeling the rhythms.

“It’s all about the music, it’s all about the dancing," said Sam Davis, 44, of Wyandotte, who said he’s been going to the festival since it began decades ago. "It’s all about coming together and just having a good time."

The first Memorial Day weekend electronic music festival, which has typically drawn daily crowds up to 35,000, was held in Hart Plaza in 2000. Twenty-three years later, it continues to usher in people looking for heart-thumping beats to the Motor City from around the country.

Madison Adams, 37, of Boston said she traveled to Detroit just for the festival because it’s her favorite she's ever been to. Adams spent Sunday afternoon hoola-hooping with her friends at one of the stages to enjoy the second day of the festival.

“I’m not a newcomer to festivals in general, but this is my favorite one by far. Hands down,” Adams said.

The festival's six stages rotate performers throughout the day from 2 p.m. to midnight. The lineup included Kash Doll, Three 6 Mafia and Skrillex. Other performances include emerging artists and Detroit DJ’s such as Eddie Fowlkes and Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale.

Nyquist said she has been coming to the festival since 2008. Nyquist juggled pins to the rhythm of the music.

“I love Movement. I love dancing, and then juggling adds a little spice,” she said.

The festival attracted thousands to downtown Detroit the day before on the opening day of the three-day event.

"Detroit is the birthplace of techno and you've got to feel the music here to experience what it's about," said Hudson Villeneuve, 25, of Ypsilanti on Saturday. "I love the outdoors; I love the people, the creativity, the art — it's a whole experience."

To Hudson, the festival, which returned in 2022 after two years off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filled a gap the city was missing during its hiatus. He said he missed having fun, meeting new people and trying different foods — but those were only bonus attractions; dancing, he said, is always the main mission.

More: Movement Festival to have Detroit dancing all weekend long

"You have to hear techno live; you can't just put it on your Airpods; you have to experience it and feel it, and Detroit is the best place for that."

Lucy Ward, 28, of Chicago returned for her third year for the sound and energy, she said, that can't be found in other places around the world. She said she appreciates the way the fest recognizes Black and LGBTQ+ communities as originators of the genre.

An exhibition, “Respect the Architects,” by resident advisor and the Detroit Techno Foundation featured DJ Delano Smith and other pioneers of Detroit techno.

There’s techno history in Detroit, and some festival goers have witnessed the genre become what it is today.

Christopher Ross, 56, said he’s been a fan of techno music since it began.

“I’m from Detroit, so I grew up with techno, house music. I was there from the very beginning when it all started. It started with Mojo and The Wizard,” he said. “I fell in love with the music.”

The techno genre is part of the electronic dance music genre, which began in the 1970s and 80s with disc jockeys experimenting with electronic rhythm in Detroit, according to the Music Origins Project. The Movement festival began long after in 2000 as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), founded by Carol Marvin and a group of local DJs. It has since been held annually and has been produced by Paxahau, a Detroit-based music events management company, since 2006.

Detroit DJ Juan Atkins and the Belleville Three were the first to coin the term “techno” and the term “Techno City” on Atkin’s Cybotron (1984) record, according to the project. Some of its main features are a repetitive beat and futuristic or industrial sounds.

On Saturday, Councilman Scott Benson honored Smith with a proclamation for his contributions to the music scene.

“I think it’s an awesome way to (represent) our city," Nyquist said. "It’s a really cool festival and it’s fun that it’s right here in the city."

DJ Ladylike opened her set on the Detroit Stage in her first time headlining the music festival on Saturday . She said she's been attending the festival since high school.

"I am honored to set this off; its my favorite weekend of the year," Ladylike said. "I feel ecstatic; I love this; I love this city."

Kaegan Kumnick, 25, of Detroit said he only attended one day during last year's event. Dancing for one day wasn't enough, so he bought a pass for the weekend this year.

"I'm drinking a little bit here and there to get the joints loose, but I really came to dance; it's all about the music for me," he said.

"With the music, you're almost in a trance. With the bass, with the high-hats — you can't help but feel the energy here. With the high-quality DJs and headliners, its worth it, and its a great time."

The festival is one of America’s best electronic dance music festivals for Madison Adams, 37, of Boston because it’s in Detroit.

“It just feels like whenever I come here, I’m never disappointed," Adams said. "I always find music that I like, I always find new people that I like. And I find most often that the locals, the people who are from Detroit, are the ones that I enjoy the most."

On Monday, performances from Father Dukes, Ben Scott, Skrillex and more are expected until midnight. Afterparties will continue throughout Detroit each day and the party will continue into Tuesday morning.

Survival Guide: Navigating Movement Music Festival 2024

Embrace detroit’s techno legacy.

Before diving into the festival, it’s essential to understand its roots. Movement celebrates Detroit’s rich techno history, a genre birthed in the city’s underground scene during the 1980s. As you groove to the beats, remember you’re partaking in a tradition that spans decades.

Dress for the Detroit Weather

Detroit’s weather in late May can be unpredictable. While daytime temperatures are generally warm, evenings can get chilly:

  • Layer Up : Wear comfortable layers that you can add or remove as the day progresses.
  • Footwear : Given Hart Plaza’s vast expanse, comfortable shoes are a must. Opt for sneakers or supportive sandals.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Dancing for hours requires energy:

  • Water Stations : Make use of the complimentary water refill stations. Staying hydrated is crucial.
  • Local Delights : Don’t miss out on Detroit’s culinary offerings. From classic Detroit-style pizza to gourmet food stalls, there’s something for every palate.

Engage with the City’s Culture

Detroit is not just about techno:

  • Art Installations : Explore art installations within Hart Plaza, especially the Artist-In-Residence section. It offers a serene oasis amidst the festival chaos.
  • City Tours : If you have some spare time, consider taking a Detroit city tour. Dive into the city’s rich history, from its Motown legacy to its architectural marvels.

Safety First

As with any large event, safety should be a priority:

  • Stay Aware : While Detroit is welcoming, always be aware of your surroundings, especially if you venture outside the festival grounds at night.
  • Buddy System : It’s always a good idea to have a festival buddy. Whether you’re exploring the stages or the city, having someone with you can enhance the experience and ensure safety.

Respect the Venue: Hart Plaza

Hart Plaza is not just a festival venue; it’s a historic landmark:

  • Clean Up : Use trash bins and recycling stations. Let’s keep the plaza as beautiful as we found it.
  • Explore : The plaza has various monuments and sculptures. Take some time to explore and appreciate its significance.

Finding Your Rave Buddy at Movement Music Festival 2024 : Connect in the Heart of Techno

Engage with the movement community online.

The digital realm offers numerous platforms to connect with fellow techno enthusiasts:

  • Official Movement Forums : The festival’s official website often has forums or community boards where attendees discuss plans, favorite artists, and seek rave buddies.
  • Social Media : Dive into hashtags like #Movement2024 and #DetroitTechno on platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Engage in conversations, share your festival plans, and you might just find someone with a similar vibe.

Attend Pre-Festival Events

Movement’s legacy means there are numerous pre-festival events scattered across Detroit:

  • Techno City Tours : Some tours focus on the history of techno in Detroit. Joining one can be a dual opportunity – to learn and to meet fellow attendees.
  • Warm-Up Parties : Local clubs often host Movement warm-up events. These gatherings are perfect for mingling and potentially finding a rave buddy before the main event.

Embrace Detroit’s Welcoming Spirit

Detroiters are known for their warmth and resilience:

  • Strike a Conversation : While exploring Hart Plaza or waiting for a set, initiate a chat with fellow attendees. Discussing the city’s techno legacy or your favorite Movement memories can lead to meaningful connections.
  • Wear Your Techno Heart : Don a t-shirt of a classic Detroit techno label or artist. It can serve as a conversation starter and attract like-minded festival-goers.

Safety First: Meeting New People

While Detroit’s techno community is tight-knit, always prioritize safety:

  • Public Meetups : If you’re meeting someone for the first time, choose a public spot within Hart Plaza or another busy area.
  • Share Your Plans : Inform a friend about your whereabouts and who you’re meeting, ensuring someone knows your plans.

Movement Music Festival 2024 promises to be another unforgettable edition of Detroit’s premier electronic music event. With its rich history, iconic venue, diverse lineup, and vibrant community, Movement is not just a festival; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of techno and the city that played a pivotal role in its genesis. As Memorial Day weekend approaches, gear up for a musical journey that celebrates the past, present, and future of electronic music.

Discovering Detroit’s Techno Roots

Story by: chloe seymour | photos by: bill bowen.

For those not already aware of this stronghold community, Detroit’s best kept musical secret remains: the city that automated the world and gave us the sweet, smooth sounds of Motown, also created dance floor euphoria for the masses with the birth of techno.

Every year, as the magic of Detroit summer rolls in, so do the welcoming, pulsing, groove-inducing beats, resonating from Hart Plaza – Movement Festival (formerly DEMF) acts as a once-a-year Mecca for techno fans from across the world. In beautiful, sweaty crowds, Berliners and Parisians dance alongside westside and eastside Detroiters to classic acts like The Belleville Three and sets from modern DJs who have continued to evolve the genre.

Pulling from the region’s industrial roots, Detroiters introduced the world to a sound unlike any other and every year, Movement serves as a culmination of a truly unique musical heritage. But Detroit’s techno roots staked their ground in the city far before DEMF’s first year – and the city keeps the sound alive long after the last stage is deconstructed in the Plaza. Techno is part of the Detroit hearts that continue to pulse in clubs, warehouses and intimate home venues all year long.

Jumping into Detroit’s techno and house scene can be the focal point for a whole Detroit trip within itself (there’s even a techno museum, available by appointment only!) and truly takes years to fully immerse into, understand, and become a regular at your favorite DJs sets. A protective yet welcoming community, Detroit’s techno scene continues to survive on their closeness, in turn, maintaining authenticity.

How Detroit became Techno City

Open any “history of techno” book, blog, etc. and The Belleville Three appear as the origin point for modern techno – Belleville being a small suburb southwest of Detroit where the originators Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson went to school and began creating together. But many other acts from the early days of Detroit’s techno and rave scene remain heavy hitters in modern techno, like Eddie Fowlke and DJ Stingray. Several waves of DJs have followed these creators, influenced by their craft and evolving the sounds they originally put forth.

In an era of 1980s social conservatism outside Detroit city lines, the early shows served as safe havens for youthful listeners, people of color and members of the LGBTQ community. To this day, techno gatherings continue to provide a refuge from the mainstream for marginalized groups and listeners.

Detroit’s style of techno and house music may have originated on streets stemming from Woodward Avenue, but its intoxicating style transcended the Midwest, and even more broadly, the United States itself. Europeans – most specifically, Berliners – took a liking to the sounds pumping out of the Motor City.

“After the wall fell in 1989 it was new,” says Walter Wasacz, a long-time techno journalist from Detroit. “It was like now we can do things that we couldn’t do before, there was a freedom to do more things creatively, [and] Detroit techno fit into that. It was a reunification of east and west Berlin, of east and west Germany, and Detroit techno was the soundtrack of reunification,” recently told the Metro Times

Historical context linked Berlin and Detroit in their unique struggles post-industry and as they continued to find their footing on the way back – techno was the soundtrack and soother in these transitions. Forever united by these sounds, the sounds of Detroit techno remain a mainstay in Berlin nightlife.

Places to go to get-down:

Though most of the clubs and spaces that hosted the techno diehards of the 1980s and 1990s are now just a memory, venues across the city still become the gathering place for those looking for a techno night (and maybe early morning) out.

  • TV Lounge : Known for hosting some of the biggest names in techno and its perfect outdoor party space, TV Lounge remains a go-to for the ultimate techno experience.
  • Marble Bar : A relatively new music-heavy venue in the city, Marble has made a name for itself quickly, hosting iconic DJs and parties for techno-lovers.
  • Leland City Club : House and sound shows find a home at this gritty club, housed in the historic Leland Hotel building.
  • Temple Bar : A Cass Corridor staple, Temple Bar has the feel of a basement party you stumbled upon – the only difference is the DJ is a talented professional and not your friend’s cousin’s friend.
  • The Grasshopper Underground : This underground dance party in Ferndale showcases live techno. Book a table through their website.
  • El Club : A favorite smaller concert venue among locals, El Club in Southwest Detroit hosts upcoming techno acts and other genres. They serve some great food, too.
  • Various pop-ups across the city – whether it’s a spare warehouse on the eastside, or a backyard at a friend’s house, techno is everywhere – for many techno-listeners and DJs, the beauty of the genre is believing in its accessibility and communality.

"Detroit not only stemmed the soundtrack to of the revival of the most thriving dance music city in the world, Berlin, but what is even more exciting is that Detroit has not stopped since then. It continues to boast a brilliant, supportive, unparalleled, internationally-recognized creative community that's grinding to keep it thriving as one of the most exciting places to live, visit, and dance every day of the week.” Gin Ebony

What does Detroit techno mean to locals?

Get your free Covalence sticker here.

With a techno thriving scene in the city, locals, Detroiters, enthusiasts and experts alike fight to maintain the inclusive, exciting community it has always been. What does Detroit techno mean to those who are a part of it? From its origins to its influence today, techno clearly remains a piece of the heart and soul of the city and its people.

“Detroit’s Techno heritage is just as important as Motown’s. The fact that what is currently the most popular music in the world was created here is astounding. The Detroit Techno sound still resonates around the globe. Four African American teenagers created this – deeply inspired by life in Detroit, the “marriage” of cold synthesized sounds and warm George Clinton-esque funk is unmatchable. Long live Detroit Techno!” – Adriel Thornton

“I choose to be here because there is no place like Detroit. I have toiled with this truism and challenged it in many ways and only recently have come to accept this. I just returned home from a month long tour to gather interview content for my radio show, visiting other dance music cities (DMC’s) to have conversations about the differences between DMC’s, the histories that have formed them, and what challenges and strengths they currently hold. Any person (underground dance music community organizer) that I spoke with who had been to Detroit claimed there was no place like it, and anyone who hadn’t been, couldn’t wait to go. Detroit not only stemmed the soundtrack to of the revival of the most thriving dance music city in the world, Berlin, but what is even more exciting is that Detroit has not stopped since then. It continues to boast a brilliant, supportive, unparalleled, internationally-recognized creative community that’s grinding to keep it thriving as one of the most exciting places to live, visit, and dance every day of the week.” – Gin Ebony

“Detroit Techno was part of the rebirth of the City of Detroit. We put a worldwide spotlight on Detroit in the 1990s, when it was mostly cast negatively. Detroit Techno was started by a few individuals who had a vision of what the music and what the culture could convey. Being a pioneer of the scene, I personally feel how the culture has evolved has a direct impact with today’s musicians. As a person who didn’t originally have a passion for scenes and the music industry, it is amazing how deeply entrenched my roots are in this music, aka Detroit Techno!” – Tim Price

Who to see today:

Some of Detroit’s biggest DJs are still busy touring the world, many of them will return to Detroit for hometown shows and packed dancefloors. The beauty of Detroit? You may stumble upon a techno legend playing a set at a small, intimate venue and wind up dancing alongside diehards.

A community who has upheld a sound and movement for decades, techno is a pillar in the city’s social and musical history. As the stages go up at Hart Plaza every year, we are reminded of what was created by the spirit of dedicated, creative Detroiters – explorable anytime of the year. May brings the city’s biggest celebration of this heritage, but the scene remains forever.

  • Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions 2024 season is among the most anticipated in the franchise's history.

Supporters are clamoring to observe if the roster can take the next step forward to advance to and possibly win the Super Bowl.

In a recently revealed video on social media, several members of the roster explained opponents on the upcoming schedule they anticipated matching up against.

Similar to last season, running back David Montgomery is looking forward to playing against his former team in the Chicago Bears.

Safety Kerby Joseph had the funniest responses, as he certainly expressed a strong desire to play against the Los Angeles Rams in the season-opener.

Recall, Matthew Stafford called the talented safety a dirty player when the teams faced off in the postseason at Ford Field.

Rookie Giovanni Manu is excited for the preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Jared Goff getting in work with teammates

Quarterback Jared Goff explained during a radio interview that he has been having solid workouts with his teammates throughout the offseason and now back in Detroit at the team's Allen Park practice facility.

“We did a little bit of that in the spring, in like March before OTAs. Now we’re out here and working out together throughout the week -- so we’re not going back to California right now," Goff told 97.1 The Ticket. "We’ve had good sessions out here, we’ve had good practices and guys look good, guys are excited. I think you can tell that the motivation is to win a Super Bowl and that’s all that matters now."

Inaugural Amp Fiddler Day celebrates beloved musician's legacy, promises more to come

detroit tour techno

An emotional ceremony Thursday in Detroit marked the inaugural Amp Fiddler Day on what would have been the beloved musician’s 66th birthday.

Family members and friends gathered to launch what is planned to be an annual commemoration of the soulful, musically versatile keyboardist and songwriter, who died Dec. 18 after a multiyear cancer battle.

The afternoon event, held in the atrium of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, featured poetry readings and appearances by members of the Detroit Entertainment Commission, including techno DJ John Collins and attorney Gregory Reed.

But the centerpiece of the ceremony was a moving speech by Fiddler’s widow, Tombi Stewart, who remembered her husband as someone eager to break musical boundaries while spreading his passion and knowledge to artists of all stripes. She reminded the audience of Fiddler's high regard among fellow musicians, including figures such as Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock and Bootsy Collins.

“This day will carry great purpose, expanding Amp’s vision and mission,” Stewart said.

Amp Fiddler Day, planned as a yearly May 16 event, was formally authorized Tuesday by Detroit City Council in a resolution sponsored by council member Scott Benson, who represents District 3 — including the northeast neighborhood Fiddler long called home.

"This will be a continuation of empowering arts and culture," said Reed, a longtime Detroit entertainment lawyer.

Stewart also outlined plans for Camp Amp Detroit, a multipronged project that will include concerts, workshops, and mentorship for young artists. A website has been launched and will offer more details soon.

The Camp Amp concept is inspired in part by the basement sessions Fiddler regularly hosted in his Conant Gardens house — genre-spanning collaborations that “expanded his repertoire,” Stewart said.

“He wanted children to be exposed to all different avenues of art,” she said.

Plans for Amp Fiddler Day were sprung before Fiddler’s memorial in February, as Stewart and others sought a “collective acknowledgement” by the Detroit community of his impact and legacy.

“As we approached his birthday, I wanted a proper way to honor him,” she said. “It was worthy of doing now.”
