20 Day Trip Ideas From New Jersey (Less Than A 1-3 Hour Drive)

While New Jersey has so much to offer, sometimes it’s nice to get out of state and visit somewhere new. New Jersey’s neighboring states offer a wide variety of day trip options, especially during the warmer months! In this article, you can learn about 20-day trip ideas from New Jersey . Some of the day trips in this post are closer to North Jersey, while some are more convenient for those in South Jersey. Depending on where you reside in New Jersey, some of these options are even less than an hour’s drive! If you are also looking for more spots in New Jersey to explore, then read my article on 50+ Instagrammable spots in NJ . Also, check out my article 15-day trip ideas in New Jersey for more suggestions on what to do locally!

IN NEW YORK

1. coney island, brooklyn, ny.

NYC and its surrounding areas can’t go unmentioned in this article. You can visit Coney Island in Brooklyn for the day and enjoy the amusements, boardwalk, beach, and more fun! Check out the calendar for the Luna Amusement Park here to see their operating hours. Visitors can easily spend an entire day at Coney Island between the amusement park and the beach. You can extend the day by grabbing dinner at a local restaurant. One of my favorite NYC restaurants is Olio e Piú in Greenwich Village! Their ricotta toast and handmade pasta dishes are out of this world! A casual favorite spot of mine is Tacombi, which has multiple locations throughout the city and serves up mouth-watering Mexican dishes!

2. Untermyer Park & Gardens, Yonkers, NY

Untermyer Park & Gardens is a historic garden with European influence located in Yonkers, NY. I visited last year and absolutely adore the beauty of this place. Visitors can spend a few hours walking around and taking photos here, and then enjoy a local eatery for dinner! I enjoyed a delicious meal at Cocina Chente in the Bronx after visiting the gardens. Untermyer Park & Gardens is also on my list of 12 Instagrammable photo spots in NYC !

3. New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is a breath-of-fresh-air spot in the city to admire nature’s beauty. Tickets are required to enter the garden and can be purchased here . The Garden is open from 10 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Sunday and is only open on Mondays when there is a federal holiday. Spend a few hours here and grab a bite to eat on the premises or at a local restaurant. You can also check out the Bronx Zoo nearby and have a fun New York day!

4. Woodstock, NY

Woodstock, New York is only about an hour and a half drive from Bergen County and is a cute town to walk around. I visited about two years ago and made a whole day of it. Grab a bite to eat in the town of Woodstock and hike the nearby Overlook Mountain. Check out my vlog below to see how we spent the day here!

5. Mount Beacon Park, NY

If you are into the outdoors and hiking, then visiting Mount Beacon Park in New York is a great day trip for you! Mount Beacon Park is roughly an hour’s drive from North Jersey, 1.5-2+ hours from Central Jersey, and 2.5-3+ hours from South Jersey. Start the day trip with an incredible lunch at Hudson Taco in Newburgh, and then cross the Hudson River to Mount Beacon Park.

day trips for seniors near nj

We hiked to the Mount Beacon Fire Tower when we visited, and found the hike to be moderate, with some moderate ascents. The views are stunning, especially during the summer and fall months! Add more to this day trip by making a pitstop in the nearby downtowns of Cold Spring and/or Beacon. Check out my vlogs below to see how I spent two different days in this area.

6. The Town of Cold Spring & Breakneck Ridge Trailhead, NY

Cold Spring is a quaint New York downtown with history, shops, local eateries, and scenic views. I recommend grabbing brunch or lunch at Hudson Hil’s Cafe, which is a casual sit-down restaurant nestled in the heart of Cold Spring. Cold Spring is roughly an hour’s drive from Bergen County and two hours from Monmouth County, and is a worthwhile day trip!

day trips for seniors near nj

If you are into hiking and like a challenge, I recommend checking out Breakneck Ridge Trail at the Hudson Highlands State Park while here. We trekked the long loop, and found this hike to be pretty challenging with the rock scrambles, but overall enjoyable! The views are stunning throughout the majority of this trail, making this a memorable trek! Check out my vlog below to see how I spent the day here!

day trips for seniors near nj

7. Bear Mountain, NY

Bear Mountain is a popular New York hiking spot located about a 0.5 to 2-hour drive from those who reside in the top half of New Jersey. This is another great outdoorsy day trip for those who admire a scenic hike. There may be a fee to enter – check out more info here .

8. Harriman State Park, NY

Harriman State Park is very close to Bear Mountain and offers a wide array of hiking trails and scenic woodlands for all levels! One of the best trails to hike at Harriman State Park is the Reeves Brook Loop Trail . This moderately challenging loop offers multiple scenic vistas and has plenty of streams winding throughout the trail. The Reeves Brook Loop Trail is roughly four miles and typically takes around 2+ hours to complete.

day trips for seniors near nj

Parking and public restrooms are available at the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center, which is where the hike begins. When doing this loop trail in the counterclockwise direction (starting on white trail markers), hikers must climb a moderately challenging and steep rock scramble to get to the main vista. It is advised that beginners or families with young children start this hike clockwise (on red trail markers). Visitors who begin the hike clockwise can follow the red trail markers to the blue trail markers and enjoy stunning vistas from the top of the mountain. Hikers who follow this route can then turn around to get back to the parking lot the same way they came, avoiding the steep rock scramble. As a somewhat experienced hiker, I personally loved the rock scramble here and found it to be a fun trek, but please use your own discretion to decide which route is best suited for you! Read more about the other trails at Harriman State Park here.

9. Storm King Art Center, NY

The Storm King Art Center is a unique spot to visit in the summer. Visitors can explore the property and check out uniquely crafted sculptures and large art displays. The Storm King Art Center is closed on Tuesdays and operates Wednesday through Monday from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Tickets must be purchased prior to arrival and more info can be found here.

11. Walkway Over the Hudson Bridge & Poughkeepsie, NY

Visiting the Walkway Over The Hudson Park is a great day trip in New York State. This walking bridge is located roughly a 1+ hour drive from North Jersey and a 2+ hour drive from most of Central Jersey. While this may be a bit far from South Jersey, if you get an early enough start to the day, I think this can still be a worthwhile trip!

day trips for seniors near nj

The scenic walkway connects from Highland, NY to Poughkeepsie, crossing over the Hudson River. Visitors can walk across the bridge and check out the town of Poughkeepsie and Marist College. Marist College has a beautiful campus, and is worth checking out while in the area! Finish off the day by grabbing a delicious dinner at Hudson Taco on the way back down to Jersey. Hudson Taco is a riverfront restaurant located in the heart of Newburgh. This charming, hip restaurant is a must-visit whenever I am up in this area of New York!

IN CONNECTICUT

12. new haven, ct.

New Haven, Connecticut is a great day trip from Northeast Jersey as it is about a two-hour drive from Bergen County. I visited nearly two years ago and enjoyed visiting the area. While in New Haven, visitors can grab Frank Pepe’s famous pizza and walk around the local neighborhoods and parks. Visitors can also explore the beautiful and historic Yale University campus. Check out my vlog below to see how I spent a fun day in New Haven!

day trips for seniors near nj

13. Mianus River Park, CT

Mianus River Park , on the Greenwich/Stamford border in Connecticut, is a nature reserve with trails, a 2-mile-long river, scenic forestland, and more nature-esque beauty. If you are looking for an outdoorsy escape, then this is a nice day trip option from Northern New Jersey. This park is roughly a 1-2 hour drive from North and Central Jersey, depending on where you are located.

The Delaware Water Gap lies between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Delaware Water Gap includes 40 miles of the Delaware River, 100+ miles of hiking trails, and even a few beaches. Inclusive and Fun Day Trips For Seniors

senior couple in car leaving for a day trip

One of the best things about getting older is retirement. If all goes well, you will have some money saved up, some free time, and the chance to use that to go off and enjoy yourself for a while. The kids have left home, you have few responsibilities, and the wisdom to put all that free time to proper use.

The downside, however, is that while you may have time and money, they often don’t have the energy they once did. That saying about youth being wasted on the young is very true!

Nights out may be too rowdy, and it’s hard to have fun when, in your mind, most of the people in the venue with you look like they should still be at school! Adventure days out may put too much strain on the joints or be too much activity for certain family members.

Here are a few of my top picks for inclusive, fun and relaxing day trips for seniors.

senior couple relaxing at the spa

A Super Spa Day

Spa days are something that all the adults in the family can enjoy. They are a good chance to disconnect from the world and treat yourself to a bit of pampering.

If you’re stressed out at work, your daughter is struggling at college and you know that grandma hasn’t been taking good care of herself, why not spend an afternoon getting a manicure, pedicure , moisturizing facial and massage? You’ll all feel amazing afterwards.

Spa treatments can be fun for the men, too. Saunas, steam rooms and hot stone massages don’t discriminate. Everyone can enjoy them, and they’re the sort of thing that people rarely buy for themselves. If you’re looking for a senior gift experience that will make your loved ones feel great, find a local spa, book a luxurious vehicle to go there in, and enjoy feeling like royalty for the day.

senior friends on a sightseeing tour

Sightseeing Coaches or River Cruises

A day trip to a big city doesn’t have to be exhausting. You can often see the sights of big cities on an open-topped coach, take some great photos with your digital camera , make some memories, and learn all about the city without having to walk further than from the car park to the coach. Some areas have afternoon river cruises and these are even more fun since they often include meal service.

This kind of sightseeing trip offers a good chance to see a new place and also get some quality bonding time in with your loved ones. If you book a trip for early in the day you can then take the afternoon to go visit the most interesting places on foot.

Book in advance and the tickets for these trips are typically affordably priced. Trips can vary in length from an hour up to a full afternoon, so do your homework before you schedule one.

football stadium at nights with lights on

Watch the Big Game

There’s something infectious about the enthusiasm that people feel for sports. Even if you aren’t a sporty senior yourself, if you pick a nice warm day to go to a sporting event, and have good seats, you’ll likely find that the vibe at the game is so good that you’ll have fun anyway. If you have someone with you who can explain the rules, it’s even better.

There’s more than just the game, too. Head to your end of season college football game and there will be mascots, cheerleaders, bands and other spectacles to enjoy at the same time. Buy some junk food, enjoy a drink, and soak up the atmosphere. It’s enough to make you feel young again!

seniors enjoying a visit to a living museum at Williamsburg VA

Hands on Museums

When most people think of museums and art galleries , they think of boring, stuffy places where all the exhibits are behind glass. Yes, if your loved ones are particularly fascinated by a specific artist or a period of history, they might want to go to a museum devoted to that, but there are plenty of educational places out there that are far more fun and appealing these days.

Take a trip to a ‘living museum’ where people wear traditional attire and play the roles of traditional jobs. Head to a hands-on museum where you can learn by doing, or go to an architectural site and watch as a dig is being performed.

There are chocolate factories and breweries that will let you try to make your own items to take away with you, and there are many history museums where you can dress up yourself for photos, and really ‘feel a part of history’.

This kind of day trip works for the whole family. The key here is to make a day out of the visit, rather than trying to do the science museum in the morning and the art gallery in the afternoon. Get a leisurely start, explore one place well, stop off for a meal, and consider that a successful day before the kids get cranky and your older relatives get tired.

That’s our top tip for a successful school day trip out.

senior couple on a bike enjoying an afternoon at the market

Seasonal or Festive Markets

If you’re looking for a shorter trip, then why not head out to a seasonal or festive market? A trip to the beach during the summer or to see some Christmas lights and go shopping in November/December makes for a fun outing that gets everyone into the right spirit for that time of year.

It’s a chance to buy some Easter eggs or Christmas gifts for the family , pick up some fine foods, and admire the bric-a-brac on the stalls, even if you don’t buy much. Book a Greyhound trip to a nearby city with a good market and you can enjoy a weekend away without breaking the bank.

This kind of trip will involve some walking but it doesn’t have to be a lot. If the hustle and bustle of the market gets to be too much, then you can always find a quiet cafe to relax in or retire back to the hotel for some rest.

rock band on stage at a concert

Tribute Bands

Tickets to big shows can run into the hundreds of dollars sometimes, and those big shows are noisy, crowded, rowdy and not really a place that a lot of seniors will want to be. By the time the opener is done and the main attraction comes on, even a lot of younger fans are getting restless.

Tribute bands offer a more intimate, chilled out, affordable and  fun experience. They have another advantage too. It’s likely that your grandfather doesn’t know who PVRIS is, but they may well have happy memories of AC/DC from their college days.

Take them to see a tribute band and they can reminisce about their misspent youth and enjoy a party atmosphere in a more relaxed setting.

senior ladies enjoying a drink and visit to the museum

Seniors Know How to Have Fun

Planning a trip with an elderly person doesn’t have to mean stuffy museums, silent art galleries, and markets full of crafts. Talk to that senior citizen in your life, and see what they would like to do. They might surprise you!

Seniors like to party, try new things, and explore too. The challenge that they often face with traveling is limited mobility and energy. Many of the conditions that affect people as they age, including diabetes and arthritis , make prolonged periods of exertion difficult. Work around that, and you can all have a good time.

Plan your activities with plenty of downtime between them so you aren’t rushing from attraction to attraction. If you get through your bucket list quickly, you can always take a detour. If anyone in your party needs a break, then it won’t lead to people feeling stressed out or guilty that people are ‘missing out on fun’ because of them.

Met Cloisters Museum, Fort Tryon Park, Washington Heights, NY

“If those who come under the influence of this place go out to face life with a new courage and restored faith … those who have built here will not have built in vain”. — John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s remarks on The Cloisters’ opening (1938)

Journey back in time to the Middle Ages at the Met Cloisters Museum. Conjuring up imagery of medieval European monasteries, churches, and castles, the Museum features a combination of stunning examples of original medieval European architecture, exquisite gardens, and marvelous works of art, including paintings, sculpture, tapestries, statues, gothic furniture, stained glass, and much more.

The Cloisters boasts several gardens featuring plantings inspired by the Middle Ages. The gardens are at their peak in late spring and early summer, but the grounds of the Cloisters are beautiful at any time of year. Located on a hilltop in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan, the Hudson River views and the New Jersey Palisades are glorious. Be sure to keep your eyes open while strolling through the peaceful paths and gardens of the Cloisters; you might catch a glimpse of a magical creature—the elusive unicorn!

Just three miles from Fort Lee, New Jersey, in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan, The Met Cloisters Museum and Gardens can be an easy and worthwhile half-day trip from anywhere in the Bergen County area.

The Cloisters, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, was assembled from architectural elements, both domestic and religious, that largely date from the twelfth through the fifteenth century. The building and its cloistered gardens and views of the majestic Hudson are stunning. The Cloisters’ collection comprises approximately two thousand works of art.

If you get hungry during your visit, stop by the Trie Café. In this fragrant garden surrounded by medieval architecture, choose from freshly made seasonal salads, sandwiches, desserts, and assorted beverages, including wine and craft beer. Trie Café will reopen for the season beginning on April 20, 2023, Thursday-Tuesday from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Closed on Wednesday.

The Cloisters also has an excellent Museum Store offering jewelry, home gifts, publications, stationery, and more inspired by medieval Europe’s art, architecture, and gardens.

COVID-19, also called coronavirus disease 2019, is an illness caused by a virus. The virus is called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or more commonly, SARS-CoV-2. It started spreading at the end of 2019 and became a pandemic disease in 2020.

Coronavirus

  • Coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses. These viruses cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads most commonly through the air in tiny droplets of fluid between people in close contact. Many people with COVID-19 have no symptoms or mild illness. But for older adults and people with certain medical conditions, COVID-19 can lead to the need for care in the hospital or death.

Staying up to date on your COVID-19 vaccine helps prevent serious illness, the need for hospital care due to COVID-19 and death from COVID-19 . Other ways that may help prevent the spread of this coronavirus includes good indoor air flow, physical distancing, wearing a mask in the right setting and good hygiene.

Medicine can limit the seriousness of the viral infection. Most people recover without long-term effects, but some people have symptoms that continue for months.

Typical COVID-19 symptoms often show up 2 to 14 days after contact with the virus.

Symptoms can include:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Loss of taste or smell.
  • Extreme tiredness, called fatigue.
  • Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach, vomiting or loose stools, called diarrhea.
  • Pain, such as headaches and body or muscle aches.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Cold-like symptoms such as congestion, runny nose or sore throat.

People may only have a few symptoms or none. People who have no symptoms but test positive for COVID-19 are called asymptomatic. For example, many children who test positive don't have symptoms of COVID-19 illness. People who go on to have symptoms are considered presymptomatic. Both groups can still spread COVID-19 to others.

Some people may have symptoms that get worse about 7 to 14 days after symptoms start.

Most people with COVID-19 have mild to moderate symptoms. But COVID-19 can cause serious medical complications and lead to death. Older adults or people who already have medical conditions are at greater risk of serious illness.

COVID-19 may be a mild, moderate, severe or critical illness.

  • In broad terms, mild COVID-19 doesn't affect the ability of the lungs to get oxygen to the body.
  • In moderate COVID-19 illness, the lungs also work properly but there are signs that the infection is deep in the lungs.
  • Severe COVID-19 means that the lungs don't work correctly, and the person needs oxygen and other medical help in the hospital.
  • Critical COVID-19 illness means the lung and breathing system, called the respiratory system, has failed and there is damage throughout the body.

Rarely, people who catch the coronavirus can develop a group of symptoms linked to inflamed organs or tissues. The illness is called multisystem inflammatory syndrome. When children have this illness, it is called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, shortened to MIS -C. In adults, the name is MIS -A.

When to see a doctor

Contact a healthcare professional if you test positive for COVID-19 . If you have symptoms and need to test for COVID-19 , or you've been exposed to someone with COVID-19 , a healthcare professional can help.

People who are at high risk of serious illness may get medicine to block the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the body. Or your healthcare team may plan regular checks to monitor your health.

Get emergency help right away for any of these symptoms:

  • Can't catch your breath or have problems breathing.
  • Skin, lips or nail beds that are pale, gray or blue.
  • New confusion.
  • Trouble staying awake or waking up.
  • Chest pain or pressure that is constant.

This list doesn't include every emergency symptom. If you or a person you're taking care of has symptoms that worry you, get help. Let the healthcare team know about a positive test for COVID-19 or symptoms of the illness.

COVID-19 is caused by infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also called SARS-CoV-2.

The coronavirus spreads mainly from person to person, even from someone who is infected but has no symptoms. When people with COVID-19 cough, sneeze, breathe, sing or talk, their breath may be infected with the COVID-19 virus.

The coronavirus carried by a person's breath can land directly on the face of a nearby person, after a sneeze or cough, for example. The droplets or particles the infected person breathes out could possibly be breathed in by other people if they are close together or in areas with low air flow. And a person may touch a surface that has respiratory droplets and then touch their face with hands that have the coronavirus on them.

It's possible to get COVID-19 more than once.

  • Over time, the body's defense against the COVID-19 virus can fade.
  • A person may be exposed to so much of the virus that it breaks through their immune defense.
  • As a virus infects a group of people, the virus copies itself. During this process, the genetic code can randomly change in each copy. The changes are called mutations. If the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 changes in ways that make previous infections or vaccination less effective at preventing infection, people can get sick again.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can infect some pets. Cats, dogs, hamsters and ferrets have caught this coronavirus and had symptoms. It's rare for a person to get COVID-19 from a pet.

Risk factors

The main risk factors for COVID-19 are:

  • If someone you live with has COVID-19 .
  • If you spend time in places with poor air flow and a higher number of people when the virus is spreading.
  • If you spend more than 30 minutes in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 .

Many factors affect your risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 . How long you are in contact, if the space has good air flow and your activities all affect the risk. Also, if you or others wear masks, if someone has COVID-19 symptoms and how close you are affects your risk. Close contact includes sitting and talking next to one another, for example, or sharing a car or bedroom.

It seems to be rare for people to catch the virus that causes COVID-19 from an infected surface. While the virus is shed in waste, called stool, COVID-19 infection from places such as a public bathroom is not common.

Serious COVID-19 illness risk factors

Some people are at a higher risk of serious COVID-19 illness than others. This includes people age 65 and older as well as babies younger than 6 months. Those age groups have the highest risk of needing hospital care for COVID-19 .

Not every risk factor for serious COVID-19 illness is known. People of all ages who have no other medical issues have needed hospital care for COVID-19 .

Known risk factors for serious illness include people who have not gotten a COVID-19 vaccine. Serious illness also is a higher risk for people who have:

  • Sickle cell disease or thalassemia.
  • Serious heart diseases and possibly high blood pressure.
  • Chronic kidney, liver or lung diseases.

People with dementia or Alzheimer's also are at higher risk, as are people with brain and nervous system conditions such as stroke. Smoking increases the risk of serious COVID-19 illness. And people with a body mass index in the overweight category or obese category may have a higher risk as well.

Other medical conditions that may raise the risk of serious illness from COVID-19 include:

  • Cancer or a history of cancer.
  • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
  • Weakened immune system from solid organ transplants or bone marrow transplants, some medicines, or HIV .

This list is not complete. Factors linked to a health issue may raise the risk of serious COVID-19 illness too. Examples are a medical condition where people live in a group home, or lack of access to medical care. Also, people with more than one health issue, or people of older age who also have health issues have a higher chance of severe illness.

Complications

Complications of COVID-19 include long-term loss of taste and smell, skin rashes, and sores. The illness can cause trouble breathing or pneumonia. Medical issues a person already manages may get worse.

Complications of severe COVID-19 illness can include:

  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome, when the body's organs do not get enough oxygen.
  • Shock caused by the infection or heart problems.
  • Overreaction of the immune system, called the inflammatory response.
  • Blood clots.
  • Kidney injury.

Post-COVID-19 syndrome

After a COVID-19 infection, some people report that symptoms continue for months, or they develop new symptoms. This syndrome has often been called long COVID, or post- COVID-19 . You might hear it called long haul COVID-19 , post-COVID conditions or PASC. That's short for post-acute sequelae of SARS -CoV-2.

Other infections, such as the flu and polio, can lead to long-term illness. But the virus that causes COVID-19 has only been studied since it began to spread in 2019. So, research into the specific effects of long-term COVID-19 symptoms continues.

Researchers do think that post- COVID-19 syndrome can happen after an illness of any severity.

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine may help prevent post- COVID-19 syndrome.

  • Long-term effects of COVID-19

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a COVID-19 vaccine for everyone age 6 months and older. The COVID-19 vaccine can lower the risk of death or serious illness caused by COVID-19.

The COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are:

2023-2024 Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine is available for people age 6 months and older.

Among people with a typical immune system:

  • Children age 6 months up to age 4 years are up to date after three doses of a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
  • People age 5 and older are up to date after one Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
  • For people who have not had a 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccination, the CDC recommends getting an additional shot of that updated vaccine.

2023-2024 Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine is available for people age 6 months and older.

  • Children ages 6 months up to age 4 are up to date if they've had two doses of a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
  • People age 5 and older are up to date with one Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

2023-2024 Novavax COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine is available for people age 12 years and older.

  • People age 12 years and older are up to date if they've had two doses of a Novavax COVID-19 vaccine.

In general, people age 5 and older with typical immune systems can get any vaccine approved or authorized for their age. They usually don't need to get the same vaccine each time.

Some people should get all their vaccine doses from the same vaccine maker, including:

  • Children ages 6 months to 4 years.
  • People age 5 years and older with weakened immune systems.
  • People age 12 and older who have had one shot of the Novavax vaccine should get the second Novavax shot in the two-dose series.

Talk to your healthcare professional if you have any questions about the vaccines for you or your child. Your healthcare team can help you if:

  • The vaccine you or your child got earlier isn't available.
  • You don't know which vaccine you or your child received.
  • You or your child started a vaccine series but couldn't finish it due to side effects.

People with weakened immune systems

Your healthcare team may suggest added doses of COVID-19 vaccine if you have a moderately or seriously weakened immune system. The FDA has also authorized the monoclonal antibody pemivibart (Pemgarda) to prevent COVID-19 in some people with weakened immune systems.

Control the spread of infection

In addition to vaccination, there are other ways to stop the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 .

If you are at a higher risk of serious illness, talk to your healthcare professional about how best to protect yourself. Know what to do if you get sick so you can quickly start treatment.

If you feel ill or have COVID-19 , stay home and away from others, including pets, if possible. Avoid sharing household items such as dishes or towels if you're sick.

In general, make it a habit to:

  • Test for COVID-19 . If you have symptoms of COVID-19 test for the infection. Or test five days after you came in contact with the virus.
  • Help from afar. Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick or has symptoms, if possible.
  • Wash your hands. Wash your hands well and often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow. Then wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces. For example, clean doorknobs, light switches, electronics and counters regularly.

Try to spread out in crowded public areas, especially in places with poor airflow. This is important if you have a higher risk of serious illness.

The CDC recommends that people wear a mask in indoor public spaces if you're in an area with a high number of people with COVID-19 in the hospital. They suggest wearing the most protective mask possible that you'll wear regularly, that fits well and is comfortable.

Travel and COVID-19

Travel brings people together from areas where illnesses may be at higher levels. Masks can help slow the spread of respiratory diseases in general, including COVID-19 . Masks help the most in places with low air flow and where you are in close contact with other people. Also, masks can help if the places you travel to or through have a high level of illness.

Masking is especially important if you or a companion have a high risk of serious illness from COVID-19 .
