Cruises to Maine

On a Maine cruise, experience quintessential coastal New England, where outdoor adventure, cultural heritage sites, and maritime tradition await. Visit centuries-old lighthouses as you cruise along the region’s rugged shores. Witness the colorful beauty of Maine’s fall foliage, and feast on fresh lobster during the season.

In port, there’s plenty to discover, from art galleries and quirky boutiques to craft breweries and artisan bakeries—not to mention those famous Maine lighthouses. Enjoy relaxing days at sea with the award-winning service and comfort that Celebrity is famous for aboard a New England cruise to Maine.

Maine Cruise Highlights

Dining on fresh seafood.

One of Maine’s claims to fame is the fresh seafood that comes from its rich coastal waters. You’ll find a variety of fish dishes, but it’s Maine’s oysters and lobster that are some of the most sought-after in the world. Try a traditional lobster roll, or feast on claws drenched in melted butter. Visit an oyster farm to learn how to shuck your own, and sample these briny, buttery treats.

Fall Foliage

One of the best things to see in Maine only happens once a year: fall foliage season. Like the rest of the northeast, the colors of the trees in the autumn months change into a spectacular array of scarlet, orange, gold, and ochre. See the best of nature’s display, whether you’re joining a guided tour, or exploring independently on foot—or on two wheels.

Lighthouses

Maine is home to more than 60 historic lighthouses along its coast. Some of these lovely lighthouses can be toured today, with a chance to explore the keeper’s quarters and learn about the role these beacons played, and still do. A solitary lighthouse on the rocky shore under Maine’s vast skies makes for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Featured Maine Cruise Ports

Pretty Portland has been a busy fishing port for more than 400 years. Wander the cobblestone lanes in the atmospheric downtown area. Once home to canneries and textile mills, today you’ll find a cluster of artisan coffee shops and tempting bakeries. Take in spectacular coastal views as you cycle the Eastern Promenade Trail, or take a day trip to the quaint little coastal town of Kennebunkport. If you’re captivated by Maine’s lonely lighthouses, join a tour to visit three of the most striking.

Artsy Rockland lies on a protected harbor surrounded by ruggedly beautiful scenery, from rocky coves to long beaches and dense woodland. In town, explore the Farnsworth Art Museum, celebrating local artists, and stroll the Rockland Harbor Trail on the lookout for seals and seabirds. Lobster lovers can join a tour on a local fishing boat to learn about age-old fishing techniques and modern sustainable practices. You’ll find lobster to eat everywhere, too, from high-end restaurants to food trucks.

Maine Cruise Itineraries

Sail along the New England coastline from Boston to Maine and beyond on an 11 or 12 night cruise. These fabulous itineraries include historic and vibrant North American ports such as Portland, Halifax, and Quebec City. You’ll also visit smaller ports such as Bar Harbor, Charlottetown, Rockland, and St. John on itineraries that sail between August and October.

Itineraries

Why cruise to maine with celebrity cruises.

Aerial view of the marina in Bar Harbor, Maine on a Holland America Line Bar Harbor cruise.

Bar Harbor, Maine, US

Located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, Bar Harbor is the quintessential New England coastal town. Our Bar Harbor cruise takes our guests to this picturesque and charming town with its scenic and walkable streets lined with restaurants and boutiques. Dining on lobster is a must, as is a scoop or two at one of the town’s homemade ice cream shops. Boat tours explore the waters and islands that surround Bar Harbor, with seasonal opportunities to see wildlife—including whales—and lighthouses along the way.

A favorite attraction many of our guests enjoy on our cruises to Bar Harbor is the magnificent Acadia National Park, an adventurer’s playground. The park, which is celebrating its centennial in 2016, is home to sites such as Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain along the eastern coast of the United States and the first place in the country to see the sun rise. Bar Harbor cruise guests can hike, bike or take a horse-and-carriage ride to explore Acadia’s lakes and striking coastline. While on your cruise to Bar Harbor, take advantage of the best bargain in town during your visit: The free Island Explorer buses take guests to Acadia’s major sites and to other nearby destinations.

Bar Harbor cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-06-16 09:40

Port Bar Harbor cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bar Harbor, Maine. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Bar Harbor is a port town on Mount Desert Island (Hancock County, Maine USA), with a population of around 5,000. It is a very popular tourist destination in Maine's Down East region.

Since January 2024, Bar Harbor Port (locode USBHB) has limited cruise shipping to 1000 daily disembarking tourists (passengers and crew), which is a substantial reduction from the previous 3000 daily visitors to the cruise port.

It is estimated that cruise tourists contribute USD 20+ million annually to Maine State's economy. Before the cruise shipping industry's pause (since mid-March 2020), the port expected nearly 200 ship calls and 300,000+ passengers. However, the entire 2020 season was eventually canceled. By mid-November 2020, Bar Harbor ME had booked 150+ cruise ship dockings (scheduled port calls) for season 2021.

Regularly scheduled ferries connect to Canada ( Yarmouth Nova Scotia ), with crossing time 3,5 hours.

In 2016, the port handled 105 cruise ship calls and around 169,000 passengers. During season 2016, cruise tourists spent at Bar Harbor around USD 15 million, with total economic impact USD 20,2M (based on a University of Maine study). To these figures must be added passenger fees (USD 0,7M) paid to the city. Also additional is spending by crew and cruise companies themselves. The study team handed out surveys to cruise passengers arriving at Harbor Place or Harborside Dock. Tourists returned 2231 surveys by mail (47% response rate). According to the study, 138,285 passengers disembarked in the cruise port in 2016. This was 87% of vessels' combined passenger capacity (163,000 pax). Note: passenger fees are based on the ship's capacity. The study also showed that in 2016, around 2 million tourists visited Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, of which cruisers were around 10%.

During season 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 171 ship calls (40% increase over 2016) and over 225,000 passengers.

On November 17, 2020, Bar Harbor Town Council discussed the popular policy (for smaller seaports in the USA) to limit the annual number of ships due to the ongoing concerns over the COVID crisis. In November 2022, via voting (1780 vs 1273) was placed a daily limit of 1000 cruise tourists, effective January 2024. A fine of US$100 per person is imposed on the company/operator for every disembarking passenger over the daily limit.

The small town is nationwide famous for its MDI Biological Laboratory (1898-founded independent nonprofit biomedical research facility), The Jackson Laboratory (JAX - large research facility specializing in mammalian genetics, nonprofit with over 2100 employees), College of the Atlantic (COA - private liberal-arts college).

However, Bar Harbor is best known for Acadia National Park/NP, which includes ~1/2 of Mount Desert Island (Cadillac Mountain) plus adjacent smaller isles. The town is served by Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (in Trenton ME), located approx 15 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown Bar Harbor. The county-owned airport serves regularly scheduled domestic flights (carriers Elite Airways, Peninsula Airways, Cape Air, PenAir) connecting to Boston MA, Newark NJ, and Vero Beach FL.

In close proximity to downtown, Acadia NP offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, trekking, biking, mountain climbing, bird watching. Tourists interested in the island's marine life can visit the yacht marina (at the end of Main Street) and sign up for boat tours for wildlife viewing (puffins, whales, seals, lobster, pelagic seabirds) or harbor cruises.

Bar Harbor cruise terminal

Bar Harbor ME is a tender cruise port, which means cruise liners anchor in Frenchman Bay and their passengers are transported to the pier via the ship's tender boats.

After the ship drops anchor, cruise passengers are ferried back and forth to one of the port's 2 piers/docks in downtown (at 121 Eden Street). From there, they can connect (with trolleys and buses) to local attractions, including Acadia National Park.

(NEW) Bar Harbor cruise terminal "Marine Atlantic"

As tendering passengers increase cruise companies' costs, there is a plan for the conversion of the old ferry terminal (on Eden Street) to a combined ferry -cruise terminal facility.

The town voted on June 13, 2017 (Article 12) to re-zone the old ferry terminal. Following the vote (945 to 658), the town purchased the state-owned Marine Atlantic property (former ferry terminal) from the Maine Department of Transportation. This facility served two Bay Ferries ships (The Cat, The Bluenose) connecting Bar Harbor with Nova Scotia Canada ( Yarmouth ).

  • In February 2019 was signed a 5-year lease deal (thru 2024) with annual rent CAD 264,000.
  • By the lease agreement, Bay Ferries started a major terminal renovation project that includes demolition and rebuilding of Customs Plaza, as well as a renovation of outbuildings and portions of the terminal building's interior.
  • Customs Plaza's renovation also includes installing new equipment (required by US Customs and Border Protection), repairs to the existing docking pier, installing a new fixed bridge section (adjacent to the pier), transfer of the floating ferry ramp from Portland to Bar Harbor.
  • Nova Scotia contributed to the cost of the ferry terminal's border services. Since the Maine-Nova Scotia ferry service was resumed (2015-2018), the NS government spent CAD 32 million in subsidies.

Article 12's zoning change allows cruise (and other) vessels to dock at the ferry terminal. Several lawsuits (filed by locals) were against this port development project. As of 2019, Ferry Terminal Visioning Committee has approved the state-owned property to be used as a multi-use terminal. The current deal includes a 5-year lease for the CAT ferry providing daily connections Bar Harbor-Yarmouth. Other terminal uses could include a possible yacht marina, boat storage, overflow parking (for tourists), cruise ship tendering.

The town has a webpage dedicated to materials developed by consultants and the local committee process. More information can be found at barharbormaine.gov/393/Ferry-Terminal. Anyone interested in this issue could follow port developments on the website.

In early-July 2020, due to the progressing in the USA COVID pandemic, Bar Harbor decided to close its seaports to cruise ships for the remainder of 2020. On July 7, town councilors voted to ban cruise ships after ACL-American Cruise Lines announced its plan to resume coastal voyages with some itineraries visiting several Maine coast towns.

In early-August 2021, the Town Council voted unanimously for the 65-year-old ferry terminal to be demolished, once there's money and a plan to replace it with a new facility. Most of the existing infrastructure (including the pier) will be demolished, to fulfill the contract with Bay Ferries. The decision was made following a workshop with the Harbor Committee in July, during which was also suggested building a new Marina (yacht-serving port facility).

  • In late-July, the Canadian company announced plans to restart its fast-catamaran service (THE CAT ship) linking with Canada (Yarmouth) .
  • The 1956-built old ferry terminal was originally designed to serve the Canadian ferryboat MV Bluenose (1977-built/1982-scrapped), so the current layout is obsolete.
  • The current terminal consists of 2 causeways, 2 piers/docks (north and south), 2 vehicle bridges (between both piers), and a dilapidated building.

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

cruises from boston to bar harbor maine

Genteel streets lined with elegant brick town houses, acres of public greens and gardens, more colleges than are found in many states, and a church on almost every corner: Boston serves up slices of history and culture at every turn. Savvy spin-doctors of centuries past have made the town that cradled independence our nation's history and myth capital. More than ever, America's mother city serves up the bold and new with the old and true -- reflecting skyscrapers mirror Colonial steeples, and expressways zip around buildings whose hand-etched look recalls the scrimshaw era. Few places in America display their history so lovingly. Like a multitiered wedding cake, the city of Boston consists of discrete layers. The deepest layer is the historical base, the place where musket-bearing revolutionaries vowed to hang together or hang separately. The next tier, a dense spread of Brahmin fortune and fortitude, might be labeled the Hub. The Hub saw only journalistic accuracy in the hometown slogan "the Athens of America" and felt only pride in the label "Banned in Boston." Over that lies Beantown, home to the Red Sox faithful and the raucous Bruins fans that crowd Boston Garden. This is the city whose ethnic loyalties -- Irish, Italian, Asian, and African-American -- account for its many distinct neighborhoods. Crowning these layers are the students who throng the city's universities and colleges every fall, infuriating not a few but pleasing the rest with their infusion of high spirits and dollars from home. The best part for a visitor is that Boston can be experienced within a day or two. This is a remarkably compact city, whose labyrinthine streets will delight the walker, although they can -- and often do -- push drivers over the edge. An hour's stroll will take you from sites in the North End -- where bewigged icons from dusty high school history books are transformed into flesh-and-blood heroes -- to Beacon Hill's mansions where the Lowells spoke only to the Cabots and the Cabots spoke only to God. You can explore the country's oldest public park, the Boston Common, in the morning, tour a Back Bay Victorian in the afternoon, and in the evening dine on Szechuan seafood in Chinatown or gnocchi in the North End. Even following the Freedom Trail -- a self-guiding walking tour of famous American historic sites -- traverses the layers: historical, Hub, and Beantown. Boston has been first too many times -- the first public library, the first public schools, and the first subway system -- to concede an inch of civic pride to bigger and bolder cities. It still sees itself as a pioneer in culture -- both popular and rarefied. In 1858, Oliver Wendell Holmes -- philosopher and author of The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table -- called Boston "the hub of the solar system"; social inflation, however, soon raised the ante to "hub of the universe." For Bostonians that still feels about right.

Royal Naval Dockyard

cruises from boston to bar harbor maine

Otherwise known as the “Gibraltar of the West,” the Royal Naval Dockyard fortifications in Sandys Parish were built in 1809 to compensate for British ports lost in the American Revolution. Convicts transported from Britain and Bermudian slaves built the fortifications from local limestone. In fact, British war ships set sail from this dock to attack Washington, DC during the War of 1812. Britain built the Royal Naval Dockyard in the West End as a buttress against everything from Napoleon’s threats to pirate attacks. Walk across the moat bridge into the Keep, our island’s largest fort, and relieve the past at the impressive Bermuda Maritime Museum. Imaginative redevelopment transformed this old naval installation into charming shops and restaurants. Stop by to climb the ramparts, eat savory fish ‘n’ chips, and visit a snorkel park. Now only a quick ferry ride from Hamilton, visitors love to dive into its historical artifacts and island culture. Royal Naval Dockyard at the island's West End is one of Bermuda's most popular attractions. Once a working fort built by Britain's Royal Navy in the 1800s, it's now a place for the Maritime museum, a craft market, theater, arts center, shops, restaurants, a night club and more. The Bermuda Maritime Museum is more than a collection of old ship models. There are underground tunnels, 30-foot ramparts and everything pertaining to the island's nautical history. If you're looking to get off the beaten path so to speak, take a bike tour or go riding on your own. The Deserted Railway Trail gives you great panoramic views and there are plenty of fun places to stop along the way including the picturesque Gibb's Lighthouse. And be sure to enjoy the outdoors at its best with snorkeling, golfing, kayaking or afternoon sport fishing or splashing around the beach.

Bar Harbor has as many facets as a diamond, each offering a wealth of experience that is just waiting to be enjoyed and explored by visitors to our town. Few realize it, but the town of Bar Harbor encompasses everything from the Trenton Bridge to Otter Creek, from the town pier to Town Hill. Bar Harbor is comprised of 28,800 beautiful acres, is 28 miles long from west to east, and enjoys a coastline roughly as long. That's a lot of space for the 4500 residents, and a lot of exploring for the visitor.

11 Best Things to Do in Bar Harbor, Maine

Nature lovers are truly spoiled for choice in Bar Harbor. Awe-inspiring  Acadia National Park  edges the town, and all kinds of nature, bird-watching and  boat tours  are offered. Two of the most popular things to do here are walking across the water,

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're planning a day in the park or want to maximize your exploration time, get a boxed lunch from Downeast Deli & Boxed Lunch Co . Order the night before and skip the lines the following morning to grab your food. – Hilary Nangle

A big reason visitors come to Bar Harbor in the first place is that the town is the gateway to Acadia National Park. The park wraps around Bar Harbor, and even some of its smaller offshore islands are part of the park. More than 30,000 of Acadia's nearly 50,000 acres of land are located on Mount Desert Island, where Bar Harbor also sits. The 27-mile Park Loop Road  takes in the best of Acadia on this island, including stunning coastline, enchanting forests and shimmering ponds and lakes.

Shore Path Shore Path free

The best introduction to Bar Harbor and its beautiful scenery is the town's 1.4-mile (round-trip) Shore Path. The Shore Path isn't necessarily a hiking trail, but more a leisurely level pathway edging the harbor and Frenchman Bay. Start your journey at the beautiful Agamont Park, located right next to the town pier, where whale watching tours typically depart. Meander down and you'll bump into the Town Beach, a small shoreline perfect for those who want to quickly dip their toes in Maine's rich blue waters. Continue farther along and you'll be treated to beautiful views of Bar Island , Sheep Porcupine Island and Bald Porcupine Island, all part of Acadia National Park , as well as craggy coastline and forested landscapes. Along the way are benches and tide pools to explore and lovely Grant Park. There are also scattered signs that educate visitors on the history of the path (it's more than a century old). The Shore Path ends at Wayman Lane. You may either return the same way or walk just one block inland, and you'll hit the town's Main Street.

Recent travelers loved the Shore Path and highly recommend that everyone who visits Bar Harbor enjoy it, even more than once. Some found it peaceful, a few enjoyed peeking at mansions along the way, and many raved about the views. Others enjoyed sitting on the rocks and watching the lobster and sailboats.

Downtown Bar Harbor Downtown Bar Harbor free

Considering Bar Harbor's small size, chances are you'll be hanging out in downtown Bar Harbor pretty often. And that certainly isn't a bad thing. Main Street and the thoroughfares surrounding it are downright charming thanks to the bevy of colorful, clapboard storefronts that house local restaurants and shops. Independent shops and galleries combined with the Bar Harbor's proximity to the water and the darling city parks that dot the area make for a romantic atmosphere. Start your tour of Bar Harbor at Agamont Park, where you can kick back and enjoy the views of Bar Island and Frenchman Bay.

Sure, you'll find plenty of T-shirt and trinket souvenir shops, but you'll also find some intriguing stores and excellent galleries. If you need to ramp up your outdoor activity apparel and gear, Cadillac Mountain Sports has you covered. Part store, part museum, the fun and funky Rock and Art Shop delivers on its name with natural-history-related merchandise and curiosities. Island Artisans shows a curated selection of Maine-made fine crafts. You'll find a huge selection of Acadia-related gifts, goodies, and souvenirs at the Acadia Shop .

Abbe Museum Abbe Museum

U.S. News Insider Tip : Pair touring the Abbe Museum with viewing 10 Tiffany stained-glass windows inside St. Saviour's Episcopal Church across the street. You can pick up a brochure in the back detailing these and 43 memorial windows created between 1886 and 1992. – Hilary Nangle

History lovers will enjoy a trip to the Abbe Museum, the first Smithsonian-affiliated organization in Maine. The Abbe Museum earns this distinction for its focus on the Wabanaki Nations, Maine's Native American population. Dr. Robert Abbe, an amateur archeologist and seasonal resident, founded the museum to protect the Wabanaki artifacts he found. He encouraged others with similar collections to come together to create a museum about Maine's Native Americans to help educate the public. Over time, more artifacts were excavated. The museum eventually grew to include ethnographic materials from the 17th to 20th centuries, contemporary works from the Wabanaki people and the country's largest Maine Indian basketry collection.

Compass Harbor Compass Harbor free

On a peak summer day, when it seems the town and park are bursting at the seams, Compass Harbor awaits. This pocket-sized parcel of the park is an easy milelong walk southward along Main Street from downtown Bar Harbor. Since it's not well marked and has a small parking lot, most visitors skip this gem. George Dorr, considered the Father of Acadia, lived here on what was known as Old Farm. You can still see the ruins of his estate on the easy 0.8-mile, Compass Harbor Trail, which loops through forested site and edges a scenic stretch of shoreline fronting Frenchman Bay. You can follow spur trails to the waterfront. While exploring the cottage foundation, the stone steps leading to the water and what's left of what once was a saltwater pool, try to imagine what Dorr's estate must have looked like in its heyday.

Recent visitors enjoyed this easy hike, exploring the tide pools, clambering over rocks and taking in the shoreline views. They appreciated the site's seclusion as well as its history. Although there's some interpretive signage, previous visitors recommended watching park videos about Old Farm and downloading the informative app before coming here.

Bar Island Bar Island free

Travelers and locals alike love this small island that's part of Acadia National Park . Although you can see it from the Town Pier end of the Shore Path , access is from West Street. And it's the access that makes it unique. At low tide, the water recedes far enough to expose the bay's floor, creating a temporary walkable pathway from Bar Harbor to Bar Island.

If you happen to be around when the tide is out, know that time is limited. According to Acadia National Park, the half-mile-long sandbar is accessible from roughly 1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after low tide, allowing three hours to explore the sandbar and island. Keep in mind that the sandbar terrain will vary depending on the time you go. Once you reach Bar Island, you'll find a gentle trail that gradually ascends to the top of the island's summit, which affords lovely views of Bar Harbor and the mountains that back it, including Cadillac Mountain . Including the sandbar, the hike totals 1.9 miles roundtrip.

La Rochelle Mansion and History Museum La Rochelle Mansion and History Museum

Delve into Bar Harbor's rich history and get a sense of what it was like to spend the summer in a seaside mansion during the Gilded Age. The Bar Harbor Historical Society's downtown museum, located in the West Street Historic District, fronts on Frenchman Bay. The views alone are reason enough to visit, but touring here provides answers to almost any question you have about the town and the island.

The 1903 mansion, called La Rochelle, was home to the Bowdoin family. It has 41 rooms, including 20 bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms. Some of those rooms are now house offices and the excellent gift shop, but many are open to the public and filled with intriguing exhibits. Rooms highlight different exhibits showcasing topics such as garden designer Beatrix Farrand, working lives of locals, children's entertainment, a map collection and rooms sharing the life of the Bowdoin family. Venture up to the third floor to see the minimalistic household staff's quarters. In addition, exhibits highlight and interpret Bar Harbor's history, from the Wabanaki Nations to the Great Fire and beyond.

George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History free

If you're interested in learning more about Maine wildlife, pencil in a visit to the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History. Run by the College of the Atlantic, this little museum is dedicated to educating visitors about the creatures above and below Maine's waters. The museum is filled with dioramas that depict taxidermies of local wildlife in their natural habitats. You'll see Atlantic puffins, North American beavers constructing their environment and both foxes and great horned owls eyeing prey. The museum also houses touch tanks where visitors can get up close to marine life, such as sea stars, snails and hermit crabs, to name a few.

Recent visitors said this is an excellent place to take the kids. Those with little ones in tow said children were fascinated with the exhibits and loved interacting with the critters in the touch tanks. Adults were also impressed with the offerings, especially since it is a student-led museum. Travelers do remark that the museum is pretty small, so you don't need to reserve more than an hour or two to tour it.

Must-See Stops on a Boston to Bar Harbor Road Trip

Posted by Liz Dengler August 09, 2021 Updated May 21, 2024

Maine is arguably the best place to spend your vacation time on the East Coast, with remote and rugged landscapes, numerous farms and ranches, old historic towns, lighthouses, and stunning swaths of coastline.

It’s easy to understand why some people take one trip to Maine and start daydreaming about moving north to live the quintessential New England life. Fortunately, if you’re in Boston, the Boston to Bar Harbor road trip is an easy drive, not to mention a beautiful one.

Here’s the best itinerary for your Boston to Bar Harbor road trip, complete with the best stops for travelers interested in small coastal towns, history, wildlands, beauty, and true New England hospitality.

Boston to Bar Harbor By Segment

There are two routes you could take for a Boston to Bar Harbor trip, but if you have time, travel along the coast the entire way. Technically fewer miles (275 versus 285), it does take a little more time (about 5.5 hours instead of 4.75) but is totally worth it.

The trip along the coast is one everyone should do at least once. Visiting the quaint coastal New England towns, enjoying views of the rocky shores, and taking advantage of the numerous opportunities to get out and explore trails or historical sites all make this route well worth the extra time.

If you can, take a few days to make your way along each segment of this trip.

Segment 1 Highlight: Portsmouth, NH

cruises from boston to bar harbor maine

When you get to Portsmouth, NH, make sure to stop and explore the town. Fuller Gardens , just south of the city on the coast, is a botanical garden open to the public. The Gardens have a fascinating history dating back to 1927, and the Rose Garden is a must-see.

Your next stop in Portsmouth should be the Seacoast Science Center . This educational detour is located in Odiorne Point State Park . Learn about the oceans and marine life and explore tide pool habitats. You can also sign up for kayak tours, workshops, and family programs, to name a few of many. This is a great first stop to get everyone excited about fun things to come.

Segment 1 Highlight: Portland, ME

portland maine Boston bar harbor

Now here is a city worthy of exploration. Portland, is a fast-growing city on the ocean. The downtown, also called Old Port , is home to all sorts of charming shops and restaurants and sits along the waterfront. You won’t regret taking extra time to spend a day or two in this little city.

Portland Head Lighthouse is always breathtaking. Built in 1791, it’s the oldest lighthouse in Maine and is still active today. However, it now houses a museum about the cape’s history.

If you have the time, look into taking a sail on one of the Portland Schooner Company’s windjammers that leave from quite near downtown. They have several special events through the season, or you can book a standard two-hour public sail.

Segment 1 Side Trip: The Crane Estate

cruises from boston to bar harbor maine

About a 30-minute detour from the interstate, the Crane Estate is a great side trip for hiking fans, history buffs, or those fascinated with architecture. The estate began its life as a humble farm in the late 1900s; however, through the preservation efforts of The Trustees , the property was developed into an expansive historic site now open to the public.

The estate has several zones: Castle Hill , Crane Beach , and the Crane Wildlife Refuge . There are historic houses, collections, beaches and trails to explore, and sometimes special events on the weekends. Be sure to pick up a map when you enter.

Segment 1: Where to Stay

You’ll find no shortage of charming B&Bs in either of these towns. At the Crane Estate, you can stay at Lodging the Inn at Castle Hill , a beautiful estate turned inn is rich with history. In Portland, you can try the beautiful (and pet-friendly)  Inn by the Sea .

If you can’t pull yourself away from Portsmouth, try the downtown Ale House Inn or glam Wentworth by the Sea . Portland has plenty of camping , too.

Segment 2: Portland to Rockland

  • Distance: 79 miles
  • Drive time without stops: 1 hour, 40 mins

The coastal stretch from Portland to Rockland has so much to do that it’s impossible to recommend everything. The 79-mile stretch of road (92 if you add Popham Beach) is jam-packed with small towns, beach visits, and lighthouses.

The following are only a few suggestions to get you started, but you could easily spend a week exploring everything this segment has to offer. While this is one of the best days on a Boston-to-Bar-Harbor road trip, it also works well as its own separate trip for a few days if you want to see everything in more detail.

Segment 2 Highlight: Freeport

Freeport Maine Boston bar harbor

Freeport is undoubtedly a tourist town and is probably best known by out-of-towners for the legendary Flagship L.L. Bean outlet stores. But Freeport has more to offer than just shopping.

You can lace up your boots and explore any of the numerous nearby parks and preserves that offer up great hiking, or grab your binoculars and visit the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary , a birding hotspot just a mile from downtown. History buffs in your crew may want to check out the Freeport Historical Society.

Segment 2 Highlight: Rockland

rockland maine Boston bar harbour

Rockland is directly on the Boston to Bar Harbor main route and is a beautiful stop. There are a couple of lighthouses in the harbor worth visiting. Start at Owls Head Light, located in Owls Head State Park , dating to 1852. It’s a pleasant spot to spend an afternoon picnicking and exploring. On your way from Owls Head to the second lighthouse, stop by the Maine Lighthouse Museum to learn about maritime history and the lifesaving evolution of lighthouses along the coast.

The second lighthouse to check out is the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse . Placed at the end of the breakwater to guide ships into the harbor, visitors can walk the entire length of the breakwater. Wear comfortable shoes, though, as the lighthouse is almost a mile out to sea.

Segment 2 Side Trip: Popham Beach

cruises from boston to bar harbor maine

Only a 25-minute detour from the coastal route, Popham Beach State Park is a must-visit stop on the Boston to Bar Harbor road trip year-round. The ocean views are stunning, and the beach is amazing to explore; sand dollars and shells are common if you keep your eyes peeled.

If the tide is low, you can walk out to the largest of the Fox Islands, but beware of the changing tides. You don’t want to be stuck out away from the shore when the tide comes in and covers the path back to the coast.

Segment 2: Where to Stay

Along this segment, there are a plethora of campgrounds, especially around Freeport .

In Rockland, you can choose between a short-term rental, hotel, or even splurge on a bed and breakfast, such as the LimeRock Inn . Maine Forest Yurts is a fun choice, too.

Segment 3: Rockland to Bar Harbor

  • Distance: 85 miles
  • Drive time without stops: 2 hours

At last, you’re almost there! Much like the segment before, this stretch has plenty of quaint New England coastal towns to visit along the 85-mile stretch of road. Camden and Belfast are both great towns to explore. However, as you move north of Belfast, the route becomes a bit more remote and scenic.

There are still places to visit, but it’s as if the road knows that you don’t want any distractions on the way to your destination: Bar Harbor.

Segment 3 Highlight: Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park maine Boston bar harbor

Hardly a contest, the main attraction near Bar Harbor is Acadia National Park. From bathing on Sand Beach to hiking Cadillac Mountain to biking the extensive carriage trails network, Acadia itself is deserving of a weeklong trip.

Be sure to explore all of the best hikes in the park and hit up all the highlights along the Park Loop Road.

After some food, head out for a stroll along the Shore Path to take in sites of the harbor or out to Bar Beach. There’s also a trail (accessible only during low tide) that heads to the top of Bar Island.

If you’re looking for a slightly shorter trip, the puffin and lighthouse cruises are an excellent opportunity to see all kinds of wildlife while touring the lighthouses. Make sure to bring your binoculars to see the wildlife in their full glory.

Segment 3 Highlight: Schooner Sail

schooner Boston bar harbour

If you’re into boating, set aside some time in Maine to sail on a schooner. The Downeast Windjammer Cruise Lines offers an assortment of opportunities, from morning sails to sunset cruises.

The evening sails can be romantic and fun as they serve wine and beer on board and often have live folk music on board for entertainment. The afternoon sail is a great option as it comes with a narration on local history and wildlife. The trips aren’t too much of a detour from Bar Harbor – the pier is about 15 minutes north of town.
