Not many know this, but the winters in Mexico City are on the colder side, so if you don’t like the cold, July is a great month to visit Mexico City. You can expect some afternoon showers on most days, but it rarely rains all day.

One of the world’s biggest ( and best! ) cities, there are plenty of indoor things to do in Mexico City when it rains.

🦋 Monarch Butterfly Season in Mexico: One of the best experiences is visiting the Piedra Herrada Butterfly Sanctuary during the annual butterfly migration in Mexico, from late-November to March.

Book a Mexico butterfly tour to see millions of butterflies in the mountains near Mexico City. On a personal note — I lived in Mexico City for a while, and my favorite time to visit is March during jacaranda season, when all the purple jacaranda flowers are in bloom.

The winters are too cold for my liking, so months like July are nice because you get warm days and mild, cool nights.

Cozumel is a Mexican Caribbean island, located about 30 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen. There are also flights to Cozumel, and you can land right on the island at Cozumel International Airport.

It’s also quite easy to travel from Cancun to Cozumel .

Some say Cozumel is the best place for snorkeling in Mexico, and the best place for diving in Mexico as well. Just off-shore, there’s the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef.

There are plenty of ways to see the reef, even if you don’t want to swim.

This is during the dry season, when you’ll see very little (if any) rain, low humidity, and few mosquitoes . This is also the high or busy season in Mexico, when most people visit.

When is the shoulder season in Mexico?

Teotihuacan tours Pyramid of the Sun

The shoulder season is a magical time when the weather is still nice, but the crowds have died down, and the prices have as well.

It takes place just as the busy season is about to begin, and right after it ends. For my money, this is the best time to visit Mexico! The Mexico shoulder season includes the months of October to November and April to May; though May is the hottest month in Mexico.

You may still find great Mexico travel deals in other months, but you likely won’t find low prices or small crowds anytime during the busy season.

The Pacific Coast beaches (Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita ), Caribbean beaches (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum and Playa del Carmen) and Yucatan beaches (Progreso, El Cuyo) will be much more humid than the beaches in Baja California — so you might opt for Cabo San Lucas.

Baja California is a peninsula located on Mexico’s west coast. It has two states, Baja California and Baja California Sur, and some of the best beaches in Mexico.

Besides Cabo San Lucas, some other great Baja beach towns include La Paz, Todos Santos, Loreto, San Jose del Cabo and Rosarito.

You should begin the day with a delicious breakfast or brunch, and then, in the afternoon, you should visit some of the top museums in Mexico City, such as the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan.

After seeing the museum, head to one of Mexico City’s top eateries for some delicious tacos.

The Guelaguetza (also known as Los Lunes del Cerro or “Mondays on the Hill”) is an annual indigenous Mexican traditional celebration . It takes place every July in Oaxaca and its neighboring towns.

It is thought that Mexico was the area where chocolate was first created. If you are a fan of the sweet treat, you should visit a chocolate shop while you are there.

They do, of course, sell chocolate, but in addition to that, they frequently include information on the process that is used to make your favorite sweet delicacy.

Take a seat, linger for a bit, and enjoy a cup of piping hot chocolate that is prepared right in front of you with a traditional wooden stir stick known as a molinillo.

It is highly recommended that you sample the hot chocolate in Oaxaca.

Despite being the second-largest city in Mexico , Guadalajara has managed to preserve its distinctive blend of colonial and indigenous Tapatos influences.

With its wide boulevards, picture-perfect parks, and beautiful ancient buildings with an air of European elegance, Guadalajara is a mecca for traditional Mexican culture.

A great way to see the city is on foot, thanks to the ancient city center’s cross-shaped grid of four main squares.

July is one of the wettest months of the year in Mexico. But that does not mean that the weather is nothing but overcast and gloomy all the time. In fact, you will find plenty of bright days with lots of sunshine during your trip to Mexico in July. Plus, soaring temperatures and humidity make all water-related activities particularly attractive. Spend time on the beach, go diving and snorkeling, and get your adrenaline pumping while kayaking around Isla Espiritu Santos.

Mexico is a large country, and some parts are cooler than others meaning that there are plenty of things to do even in July. Take advantage of the relatively moderate temperatures in the Sierra Madre and go hiking. Else, explore Mexico City , which rarely becomes unpleasantly hot even in July.

However, July is also the season of hurricanes, and you are highly likely to encounter a tropical storm if not a full-blown typhoon on the country’s east coast. • Fiesta de Santo Domingo de Guzmán (last week of July, first week of Aug). Comitán’s fair, with concerts, rodeos and more.
  • Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (July 15–30). Ciudad del Carmen (Campeche) and Motul (Yucatán).

July Festivals and Events in Mexico

best places to visit mexico in july

If you're planning to travel to Mexico in July, you should be aware that this is generally the wettest month of the year through central and southern Mexico. It's  rainy season , so don't forget to pack a raincoat or umbrella. It generally rains in the afternoons and evenings, but daytime is often sunny and fairly dry, so there's a good chance the rain won't interfere with your sightseeing plans. Mexican schools have their summer holidays during this month, and a lot of Mexicans may be vacationing with their families, so it's a good idea to make travel arrangements in advance if you're traveling to Mexico in the summertime . Read on for the most noteworthy festivals and events taking place in Mexico this month.

Guelaguetza Festival

The traditional dances of the different regions of Oaxaca state take center stage at this colorful cultural festival. People come from all over the world to attend the celebration, sometimes referred to as the Lunes del Cerro  (Mondays on the Hill), because it takes place on the last two Mondays of July in an auditorium on a hill overlooking Oaxaca de Juarez city . Many other activities take place in the region during the two weeks surrounding this festival, including a mezcal fair.

Guanajuato Film Festival

The colonial mining town of Guanajuato is home to one of the largest film festivals in Mexico and one of the most important in Latin America. The festival was originally known as Expresion en Corto , and its focus is on short films, videos, and documentaries .  Films are shown at various venues in Guanajuato city as well as nearby San Miguel de Allende . Admission is free for all screenings and events.

Jornadas Villistas

A week of festivities commemorating Mexican revolutionary icon Francisco "Pancho" Villa is held in the historical figure's home state of Chihuahua, during the week commemorating his death on July 20, 1923. The celebration culminates in the  Cabalgata Villista , a horseback riding adventure that takes participants from Chihuahua to Hidalgo del Parral, covering 136 miles.

Ruta del Vino Bike Ride and Wine Festival

Ride your bike through Mexico's main wine producing region, the Guadalupe Valley in Baja California state . Along the way, you’ll pass by 25 wineries in the heart of the valley where the sweet smell of grapes blends with the cool Pacific breeze while the sun warms the rural landscape. The finish line is located at Rondo del Valle vineyard, where you can celebrate your accomplishment at a wine festival, sampling some of the best varieties of the area and enjoying local food and music.

Whale Shark Festival

A great number of whale sharks make the area north of Isla Mujeres on the Yucatan Peninsula their home over the summer months. This family-friendly festival showcases local culture and cuisine and allows participants to enjoy some of the water activities that have made this small island a favorite vacation spot: sportfishing, diving and snorkeling tours of the pristine reefs, and of course, swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world and an endangered species.

Feria Nacional Durango

Durango state 's ranching and agricultural roots are celebrated in their state fair with equestrian events,  charreadas  (Mexican rodeo), and other cultural activities, as well as pop music concerts. Some of the performers who appeared in past years include Jesse & Joy, Napoleon, Pepe Aguilar, Cristian Castro, and Enrique Iglesias.

Fiestas de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival)

If you've always dreamed of crushing grapes with your feet, this is the perfect opportunity to do so! Wine producer La Redonda in the central Mexican state of Queretaro hosts their grape harvest festival in the second half of July. Your admission fee includes a wine tasting, commemorative glass, and the chance to feel grapes between your toes.

Cantoya Fest

The sky above the  magical town of Patzcuaro in Michoacán state fills with a host of giant paper balloons in the annual paper lantern festival, Cantoya Fest. Local artisans demonstrate their creativity and mastery of the craft and compete for a variety of prize in different categories. Although this craft certainly has Asian origins, for the Purépecha people in Michoacán, it is an important recreational activity that reinforces community bonds.

Festival Internacional de Folclor (International Folklore Festival)

The city of Zacatecas hosts their week-long international folklore festival every year beginning on the last Sunday of July. With the participation of 20 different countries and 10 Mexican states, this festival offers varied representations of culture and traditions in dance, crafts, and cuisine.

16 Best Beaches in Mexico—Whether You Want a Quiet Surf Escape or Thrumming Nightlife

By Caitlin Morton

Cuixmala best beaches in Mexico

Mexico is one of those well-rounded countries that offer a little bit of everything: food, culture, gorgeous landscapes, and some of the best hotels and resorts in the entire world. But at the end of the day, Mexico will always be known as a beach destination—and for good reason. The nation boasts nearly 5,800 miles of coastline, stretching along the warm Gulf of Mexico to the east and the wild, surfer-friendly Pacific Ocean to the west.

Perhaps the best aspect of Mexico’s beaches is their diversity. Regardless of the type of vacation you seek—a surfing adventure, a cultural immersion, or an off-grid retreat—you’ll find a stretch of sand to fit your needs. Case in point: We rounded up 16 spots that stand out for their unique activities, luxurious accommodations, and overall beauty, and there truly is something here for every traveler.

From popular vacation spots to hidden island gems, here are the best beaches in Mexico.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

Courtesy St. Regis Punta Mita Resort

Punta Mita, Nayarit

Punta Mita is a lush, private peninsula on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, about 10 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. This 1,500-acre enclave receives consistently warm and sunny weather, and its crystalline waters lend themselves perfectly to swimming and surfing. But the best asset of Punta Mita is its collection of luxury hotels and resorts: Take your pick from the newly opened Susurros del Corazón, Auberge Resorts Collection , or opt for other favorites like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita ,  The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort , and  W Punta de Mita .

Playa Balandra La Paz

Playa Balandra, La Paz

About 40 minutes outside of La Paz , Playa Balandra is arguably the most picturesque beach in all of Baja California. The idyllic spot lies on the eastern coast of the peninsula, overlooking a peaceful bay that spills out into the Caribbean-esque Sea of Cortez. You won’t find many better places in the area to go snorkeling and swimming—and the views of the desert meeting the ocean are truly second to none.

Cabo San Lucas Baja California Sur

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur

Cabo San Lucas is known as a popular tourist destination—hello, spring breakers !—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The resort city happens to have some of the best beaches in Mexico, including the remote Playas La Palmas (rent a 4x4 to get there) and Playa Acapulquito, a veritable surfer’s paradise . And then there are the resorts. You have tons of options here, but you won’t do much better than Chileno Bay Resort , featured on our 2018 Hot List . Aside from its beautiful and breezy villas, its location on one of Cabo’s most swim-friendly beaches can’t be topped.

Isla Mujeres Quintana Roo

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo

While often thought of as a side trip from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a destination in its own right. The main beach of Playa Norte is made of crushed coral, has warm shallow waters, and is much quieter than the beaches across the bay. Scuba enthusiasts should take note: The island is home to the largest concentration of whale sharks on the planet.

Isla Holbox Quintana Roo

Isla Holbox, Quintana Roo

We dubbed Isla Holbox, just north of Cancun, “ One of Mexico’s Last Secret Beach Towns ” back in 2017; and while it might not be such a secret anymore, it still dazzles with its stretch of beaches, aqua-blue water, and nature preserve. Spend your days browsing the markets and textile shops in town, and don’t you dare forget to visit the island’s famous over-water hammocks. Punta Caliza , a relative newcomer to the scene, is one of our favorite places to stay.

Playa del Amor, Nayarit

It looks like something out of a fantasy movie, but Playa del Amor (more commonly referred to as “Hidden Beach’) is a very real, albeit hard-to-reach, attraction. Part of the Marietas Islands (about a 1-hour boat ride west of Puerto Vallarta), the beach is engulfed by a cave with a gaping hole in the roof—a hole rumored to be the result of bombs from military testing by the Mexican government during the early 1900s. Sinister origin aside, the hole now serves as a unique skylight that opens the beach up for sunbathing and photo ops, but the extremely strong currents here make swimming a risky endeavor.

Zihuatanejo Guerrero

Zihuatanejo, Guerrero

The Pacific Coast surf town of Zihuatanejo (often shortened to “Zihua”) has natural beauty that is equal parts alluring and hard to reach (hence the lack of crowds). We keep going back for the cliffs and ravines blanketed by mangroves, scooped-out bays, and a backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Zihua has four beaches that are reachable from the city center, the best—and most remote—being Playa Las Gatas. The white sand and cyan lagoon are perfect for lounging with a beer, snorkeling, and maybe spotting a humpback whale on the horizon.

Cuixmala best beaches in Mexico

Costalegre, Jalisco

The Costalegre spans Mexico’s Pacific Coast into the states of Jalisco and Colima, where luxury hotels stand adjacent to wild landscapes. One such stunning example is Cuixmala : Aside from its oceanfront infinity pool, private beach, and extremely luxurious suites, the estate has a 30,000-acre wildlife preserve literally in its backyard. How’s that for indulgence?

Playa Los Cerritos, Baja California Sur

Five-mile-long Playa Los Cerritos is one of the safest swimming spots near funky Todos Santos , an hour north of Cabo on the Pacific. It’s a popular spot for surfing (and lessons are easy to find), shell collecting, and family outings. It is also one of the most developed beaches in the area: Aside from taking advantage of an on-site bar and restaurant, visitors can reach the hippie-chic boutique hotel from Liz Lambert, Hotel San Cristóbal , via a short drive to Playa Punta Lobos.

Zicatela Mexico

Playa Zicatela, Oaxaca

Playa Zicatela is one of the most famous surfing spots in all of Mexico, located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca . The breaks here have drawn comparisons to Hawaii’s famed Pipeline, and you can often find major surfing competitions taking place on the beach. Even if you aren’t big on water sports, the surrounding town of  Puerto Escondido will draw you in with its funky hotels, public artwork, and shoes-optional restaurants.

Playa Paraiso Tulum

Playa Paraiso, Tulum

About an hour south of Cancun, Tulum has emerged as one of Mexico’s most beloved beach destinations, thanks to an abundance of white sand, warm turquoise water, and jungle-lined roads and ruins. Perhaps the best slice of paradise is the appropriately named Playa Paraiso, where folks flock for the aforementioned scenery as well as an abundance of activities, including snorkeling and scuba diving. There are even changing rooms and a beach club serving up cold drinks, so go ahead and plan on staying all day.

Isla Espíritu Santo Baja California Sur

Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur

Located in the beautiful Sea of Cortez, Isla Espíritu Santo is a short boat trip away from La Paz on the lower half of the Baja California Peninsula . The uninhabited island is full of red rocks, pristine white beaches, and many species of exotic wildlife . Swimming with a colony of sea lions is the highlight of many an expedition, followed by a relaxing picnic on the shoreline.

Troncones Guerrero

Troncones, Guerrero

Formerly a quiet fishing village, 46 miles north of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport, Troncones has become an under-the-radar escape for adventurous travelers. The three-mile-long beach draws surfers from all over the world, while eco-tourists love horseback riding on the sand and hiking in the nearby Sierra Madre mountains. Best of all, with a population hovering around 500-600 permanent residents, Troncones always maintains a wonderful sense of isolation.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres, Cancun

Cancun may be one of Mexico’s more tourist-heavy beach destinations, but it’s hard to ignore the city’s postcard-perfect stretches of white sand and turquoise water—even if you do have to dodge some crowds during your visit. If you go a little off the beaten path, you may even get some sandy real estate all to yourself. We recommend heading towards Playa Mujeres (not to be confused with Isla Mujeres, which is about seven miles off the coast of Cancun), an idyllic resort community wedged between the Caribbean and a wildlife preserve, to enjoy some peace and quiet (bonus serenity points if you can book a stay at the adults-only  Excellence Playa Mujeres ).

Yelapa Jalisco

Yelapa, Jalisco

Yelapa is only accessible via a 30-minute boat ride from Puerto Vallarta. Therein lies the appeal of this off-the-radar paradise , where the beach is long and the tourists are sparse. Step directly off the boat onto the crescent-shaped sand, grab some fish tacos and beer at the thatched-roof bar Angelina’s Gardens Beach Club, and spend the rest of the day swaying in one of the many hammocks strung up beneath the palms.

Puerto Ángel Oaxaca

Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca

The town of Puerto Ángel sits on a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay, bookended by craggy rocks and surrounded by wooded hills. The waters here are calm and bright blue, although the town mostly serves as a small fishing port. The best beach scene is found at Playa La Boquilla, about three miles east of the bay, where the shallow waters make for excellent snorkeling .

As diverse as it is enchanting, Mexico is a year-round destination. This 32-state nation boasts glistening coastlines, numerous microclimates and an astonishingly varied terrain.

For 365 days a year, the sun reigns supreme on the pristine beaches of Cancún and Playa del Carmen on the Yucatán Peninsula, while inland city gems like Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende , located in the temperate highlands, provide respite from scorching summers.

Over in the state of Chihuahua , adventurers relish the grandiose and gobsmacking Copper Canyon in spring and fall, and the country’s cultural heartland, Mexico City , is perennially bustling with life.

Whether you're a beach lover, culture maven, history buff or foodie, Mexico has a perfect time for you to experience its countless treasures. In this guide, we'll dissect the seasons, local festivals and regional nuances to help you pinpoint the best time to go to Mexico, ensuring your trip is as unforgettable as the country itself.

Happy Friends at the Beach

December to April is the best time for dry weather and party crowds

High season in Mexico coincides with the dry season from November to March (the rainy season is from June to October). These pleasantly dry months bring numerous winter escapees from colder countries, and it is the best time to travel to Mexico if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors and in nature.

On the Baja Peninsula , flowers bloom, things get green, big waves delight surfers, and swimming with whale sharks is possible (from October through April). In the Northern Central Highlands , it's a fantastic time for excursions to waterfalls and rivers, while in Oaxaca , these are the best months for hiking.

Bring a sweater for high-altitude destinations like San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas , which can be chilly at night and in the morning. In the Western Central Highlands , the forests of the Reserva de la Biosfera Santuario Mariposa Monarca (Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve) turn orange as millions of large monarch butterflies winter there from late October to mid-March.

November, December and January are the most expensive months to fly to Mexico. Expect crowded attractions and population swells in destinations like Tulum , which is particularly busy before New Year’s Eve and on the first week of the year when massive electronic music festivals fill the calendar.

February is the best month for whale-watching around the Baja Peninsula, and March is the Vernal Equinox when visitors mob Chichén Itzá (it happens in autumn as well) to see shadows that resemble a serpent ascend or descend the  El Castillo pyramid . Archaeological sites like Teotihuacán north of Mexico City and Guachimontones west of Guadalajara are also popular spring equinox pilgrimages.

In March and April, many US students spend their spring break in coastal hotspots, including Cancún, Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas , for days of over-the-top partying. Whether you wish to join or avoid the revelry, take note of potential fare increases during this time.

Semana Santa (Easter Week), which can be in March or April, is Mexico’s major holiday week of the year, with tourist accommodations and transportation packed – many businesses also shut down in inland cities. Along with Christmas, Easter fares in Mexico can be as much as double the typical rate.

May to June is the best time for sunseekers, fewer crowds and low prices

Mexico experiences two low seasons: May and June, and then September through November. If you’re looking to score great travel deals, these might be the cheapest months to vacation in Mexico.

In May, temperatures reach annual peaks in cities such as Mérida (average daily high 95°F), Guadalajara (87°C), Oaxaca City (86°C) and Mexico City (79°C). You might be surprised to learn that Cinco de Mayo is not observed with zealous fanfare throughout Mexico, though it is a public holiday. The main destination for celebration on May 5 th is Puebla , where a battle between the Mexican army and French soldiers is re-enacted.

June is the start of the rainy season in Mexico, as well as the hurricane season, which lasts until November. The highest chance of encountering a hurricane, however, is between August and October.

July and August are the best months for surfing and wildlife encounters

It’s hot nearly everywhere in Mexico during the summer. Countless spots in the Mexican Riviera (Mexico’s Pacific coast region), including Puerto Escondido with its legendary Mexican Pipeline, enjoy superb swells from April/May to October/November. June to August generally sees the biggest waves.

If you love turtles, the best time to travel to Puerto Vallarta is from July until December, when you can attend one of many baby turtle releases held by a handful of hotels. For whale shark spotting, these gentle giants gather off the coast of Cancún and Riviera Maya towns between mid-May and mid-September, but the best time to see them is July or August.

The summer might not be the best time to visit Riviera Maya or Cancún, though – not only is it oppressively hot, but many beaches are covered in sargassum (brown seaweed). Vacationing Mexicans from the rest of the country also flock to these beaches, which makes hotel rates rise. Beaches on the Mexican Riviera are never affected by sargassum.

September to November is excellent for cultural showcases and inland city escapades

The second low season, from September to November, is a terrific time for inland explorations and tastes of culture. Mexican families feast on Chiles en Nogada  (chilies in walnut sauce) to celebrate Día de la Independencia (Independence Day), which ushers in lively patriotic celebrations on the 15 th and 16 th of September.

Over 10 days in September, Guadalajara hosts the charming, colorful and delectable International Mariachi and Charrería Festival, when more than 500 mariachis perform and the National Charro Championship takes place ( charrería is Mexico’s national sport).

With the hurricane season in full swing on the Yucatán Peninsula and Mexico’s coasts, it’s rainy in most places, with poor visibility for Caribbean divers in September. However, inland Mexico tells a different story.

There are spots of rain in Mexico City , but the mild weather is perfect for wandering around the city. October, along with November and March, is one of the best months to visit northwest Mexico’s spectacular canyon country, with temperatures not too hot at the bottom of the canyons, nor too cold at the top.

At the start of November, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) brings parades, floats, altars and all-night vigils to cities and towns all over Mexico. As the jubilant epicenter of this celebration, this is one of the best times to visit Oaxaca City .

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

20 Amazing Places to Visit in July in the USA

Summer crowds can be an issue anywhere, but if you are savvy enough, you will find some amazing places to explore this month. From my time traveling around this month, h ere are my favorite places to get you started…

1. Finger Lakes, New York State

Finger Lakes, New York State

This area is filled with beautiful watery landscapes punctuated by hundreds of stunning waterfalls. Some tumble between forested cliffs from upwards of 150 ft.

The awe-inspiring Taughannock Falls, which plunges from 215ft, is one of the few you can swim in. I personally love the whole of the Fingerlakes area; it’s a tranquil and scenic gem, and summer is the perfect time to visit.

Much of the waterfall action is centered around Lake Cayuga’s shores and Ithaca’s picturesque town, home of Cornell University. Ithaca is everything you’d expect from an Ivy League Town, full of stunning historic brownstone buildings and leafy avenues.

I recommend exploring all the beautiful parks and gardens which are in full bloom during this month and the weather is very warm too!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 35 Lake Front Dr, Geneva, NY 14456
  • Average temperature – 28 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Exploring Watkins Glen State Park, which features 18 stunning waterfalls.
  • Enjoying an afternoon out on the waters on a Wine Tasting Boat Tour!
  • Taking a Sea Plane Tour which was a very memorable experience flying over Watkins Glen, Seneca Lake, and Canandaigua Lake.

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbour is a picturesque town on Mount Desert Island. Its shoreline sits along Frenchman’s Bay which is the gateway to the beautiful Acadia National Park.

I’m a real foodie, and I loved their top-class dining spots and being able to eat al fresco at the harbourside restaurants.

For Nature Lovers, I highly recommend going on a Nature Cruises trip, which sails regularly from Bar Harbour. They offer an opportunity to spot porpoises, seals, eagles, and other marine life, as well as elegant mansions and the scenic lighthouse at Egg Rock.

I suggest exploring the nearby magnificent Acadia National Park, which spans 47,000 acres of rugged Atlantic coastline interspersed by dense woodland, rocky beaches, and granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the East Coast’s highest point. The scenery is just extraordinary here!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees

My highlights…

  • Strolling along the gorgeous Shore Path coastal trail, where I could view the surrounding small islands.
  • Admiring the wonderful New England Historic Architecture filled with character and quirky features.
  • Hopping on a boat over to Mount Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park and lots of outdoor activities like hiking and cycling.

3. Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park lies within the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. Stretching northwards towards the Canadian border, the park is unique as it encompasses over 900,000 acres and three specific ecosystems: temperate rainforests, glaciated mountains, and wild Pacific coastline.

In July, you are (almost!) guaranteed pleasant temperatures (although not too hot), making it an excellent time of year for wildlife spotting, hiking, and water sports. In the summer, there is also the opportunity to bike and stargaze on Hurricane Ridge.

If you only have a short time here, I’d recommend staying at the characterful Lake Quinault Lodge . This rustic lodge, built in the 1920s, is on the lake’s shores on the edge of the excellent Olympic National Forest.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 3002 Mt Angeles Rd, Port Angeles, WA 98362
  • Average temperature – 17 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Hiking the Obstruction Point Trail and seeing the gorgeous scenery.
  • Visiting the incredible Hoh Rain Forest, the trees there are very unique!
  • Spending a night at Hoh Rainforest Campground surrounded by stunning scenery.

4. Yachats, Oregon

Yachats - best places to visit in July

The minute I set foot in Yachats, I loved it. Perched alongside Cape Perpetua on an unspoiled stretch of rugged Oregon Coastline, Yachats is remarkable and still a relatively hidden gem.

It’s home to tide pools, black basalt cliffs, fern gullies, and beautiful lighthouses amid crashing ocean waves. It’s a great place to kick back, relax, and take in the wonderful scenery.

There’s a good handful of charming resturants and shops, and all the shop owners we chatted with were keen to tell us about all the fantastic community events, from ClamBakes on the beach to the weekly summer farmers market.

I didn’t want to leave, and if you go, I am pretty sure you won’t either!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 241 Oregon Coast Hwy Box 728, Yachats, OR 97498
  • Checking out the eclectic variety of shops in the downtown area.
  • Tasting locally crafted award-winning beer at Yachats Brewing + Farm Store.
  • Wandering along the beach to see the dramatic shoreline filled with magnificent rock formations and sea views.

5. Geneva-on-the-lake, Ohio

Geneva-on-the-lake, Ohio

Established in 1869, I’m a big fan of this family-friendly vacation destination. Situated in Geneva State Park on the shores of Lake Erie, I love how quaint and old-fashioned this place is.

From June to August , you can bask in the summer sunshine on one of the beautiful lakeside beaches, charter a boat, or try any of the water sports available at the marina.

I also recommend trying the canopy tours, including sky bridges, zip lines, and adventure rope courses, for a real thrill. One of my favorite experiences was a laid-back tour of local breweries and vineyards. Alternatively, you can also play golf or eat al fresco while watching a beautiful sunset.

Explore some of the cute little local shops, swim in the crystal lake waters, or hike on the trails, trying to spot birds. Mini-golf and amusement arcades galore keep the kids happy, too.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 5540 Lake Rd E, Geneva, OH 44041
  • Renting a jet ski!
  • Take a trip to Madsen Donuts, filled with deliciously flavored donuts and friendly customer service!
  • Eating a hearty American breakfast while gazing at the lake at Horizons Restaurant & Lounge.

6. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

This is a fantastic park to stay in the summer. It straddles the border between Northern Minnesota and Canada, consisting of acres of interconnecting lakes and waterways. The biggest landmass in the park is the Kabetogama Peninsula, which lies entirely within its borders.

Here, it’s all about the water, with many of the most beautiful parts only accessible by boat. To the east of the park is Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness, a stunning collection of forests, glacier lakes, and streams that draw millions of outdoor-loving visitors annually.

There are many accommodation options here, ranging from cute houseboats to lodges. I highly recommend exploring as many 50 miles of trails on the peninsula as possible. Amazing overlooks punctuate them, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Voyageurs National Park- Rainy Lake Visitor Center, 1797 Township Rd 342, International Falls, MN 56649
  • Average temperature – 25 degrees
  • Traveling around the lakes by canoe!
  • Seeing the Northern Lights (they can be seen all year round here).
  • Admiring the beautiful Ellsworth Rock Gardens, built in the 1940s, they took 20 years to complete.

7. Boston, Massachusetts

Quincy Market Boston

I personally think Boston is an extra special travel spot in July as it hosts the fabulous Summer Pops Concerts and breathtaking Fourth of July fireworks over the River Charles.

These are connected to Harborfest, a week-long celebration of the city’s unique maritime history that kicks off on Independence Day.

When here, I recommend chilling out on one of the fantastic city beaches, grabbing a picnic and a bottle of wine, enjoying Shakespeare on the common, or watching an outdoor movie under the stars.

Boston has beautiful parks, fantastic architecture (both old and new) and a splendid esplanade, perfect for romantic summer strolls and plenty of picnics.

I also love the excellent food and craft beer scene, the al fresco dining options, harbor cruises, and the incredible whale-watching opportunities ( May to October ).

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 139 Tremont Street Boston, MA 02111
  • Average temperature in Boston in July – 28 degrees
  • Hopping on a boat tour, sailing around Boston, and viewing the spectacular city differently.
  • Sunbathing along the Boston Beach at the main waterfront.
  • Watching the Red Sox at Fenway Park!

8. Half Moon Bay, California

Half Moon Bay California

This is a gorgeous coastal spot to spend a summer weekend or use as a base to explore the northern Californian coastline. Its compact downtown area is filled with quaint eateries and attractive shops selling boutique products, from unique arts and crafts to delicious wine.

There are many seafood restaurants here, but for a quirky dining experience, I’d recommend Daddy’Os, housed in an old rail car and serving delicious comfort food.

Half Moon Bay is surrounded by protected parks and beaches, including the Mavericks, a famous stretch of coastline that hosts a world-famous annual surf competition. Other protected beaches, such as Poplars, are great spots for a sunset picnic, and the beautiful beaches here don’t get crowded like some neighbouring stretches.

I love that it’s a place that maintains a calm and relaxed coastal vibe even in the peak summer months.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 235 Main Street Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
  • Average temperature  – 18 degrees
  • Walking along the Coastside Trail, which stretches nearly 5 miles long and offers gorgeous views overlooking the ocean.
  • Wandering along Main Street and discovering an array of shopping boutiques and fun dining options.
  • Eating a hearty vegetarian lasagne at Half Moon Bay Joe’s.

9. St Michaels, Maryland

St. Michaels, MD

Once home to shipbuilding and oyster fishing, St Michaels is a small waterfront town in Talbot County, Maryland, home to around 1,000 people. I love that it still has the look and feel of a 19th-century seaport and is home to a charming Old Town filled with historic houses; it’s a picture-postcard pretty spot!

Topping the list of beautiful, low-key summer vacation spots, it is known for its picturesque water bodies, which I think are needed during hot summer days (average temperatures are around 31°C).

It has fun, family-friendly attractions, attractive independent shops, quaint resturants, buzzing marinas, and the picturesque Chesapeake Bay.

Whether you want to sail on a yacht, swim to cool off on a hot afternoon or treat your taste buds to some mouth-watering local cuisines, I think St Michaels is a great option!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: PO Box 1206,  St. Michaels, MD 21663
  • Average temperature – 31 degrees
  • Visiting the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and walking through 18 acres of interactive exhibitions!
  • Walking around Hollis Park for a quieter atmosphere after a busy day of sightseeing.
  • Enjoying an exceptional dining experience at 208 Talbot Restaurant.

10. Buffalo River, Arkansas

Buffalo River Horseshoe Bend

This is an excellent option for outdoor enthusiasts, with many accommodation options. The river here is 153 miles long, and 100 miles of trails traverse its banks. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, rafting, tubing, rock climbing, swimming, and mountain biking (rentals are all available in the area).

The Hawksbill Crag trail is the only designated hiking trail through the wilderness area. When I hiked it, I saw incredible views of the steep bluffs formed by the winding river gorge.

I also loved the beautiful oak and hickory forests, ancient caves, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife spotting opportunities, including a herd of over 500 free-ranging elk.

There is plenty for history lovers, too; I would recommend visiting the eerie Rush Ghost Town and the even creepier Peppersauce Ghost Town at Calico Rock; both are designated historic districts with very chequered pasts!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 170 Ranger Rd, St Joe, AR 72675
  • Average temperature  – 33 degrees
  • Taking a dip in the Steel Creek swimming hole,
  • Soaring through the sky on a zipline on the Buffalo River Canopy Tour.
  • Discovering the magnificent caves in the upper area, the Mystic Caves and Crystal Dome Caverns.

11. Traverse City, Lake Michigan

Traverse City Marina

With a shoreline spanning 307 miles, I found choosing where to stay on Lake Michigan a little overwhelming. Still, I loved the spot I eventually decided on – Traverse City in Northern Michigan.

It was an excellent base to explore some of the most beautiful beaches and nature reserves along the lakeshore. It’s also a fantastic and vibrant city in  its own right.

I became a fan of the city because it offered fantastic boutique shopping, microbreweries, food carts, gastro pubs, and fine dining. It also has abundant public art, museums, galleries, and excellent urban walking, biking, and boating trails.

The Old Mission Peninsula, just a short drive from downtown, had some beautiful parks overlooking the water. Haserot Beach was an excellent relaxing place, and Bryant Park was the perfect picnic spot.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 101 W Grandview Pkwy, Traverse City, MI 49684
  • Wandering downtown and discovering all the boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries.
  • Relaxing on the sandy Traverse City State Park Beach.
  • Biking the paved Boardman Lake Trail which took me through lovely scenery.

12. Beavers Bend Resort Park, Oklahoma

Beavers Bend - great summer destinations

I’m a big fan of this beautiful 1,300-acre resort park beside Broken Bow Lake in Southeastern Oklahoma, which is perfect for a summer vacation.

The park offers numerous activities , including a curated lineup of campfire programs, nature hikes, and arts and crafts classes. It also has 12 miles of hiking trails and roped-off swimming areas along the lake and river banks.

If you love the view from the water, I recommend hiring a Yakanoe, kayak, or paddleboat. There’s a steam train, golf course, visitor center, and numerous gorgeous wooden cabins to stay in, all nestled within the stunning mountainous terrain.

Don’t miss catching the sunset over the impressive Broken Bow Dam!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Broken Bow, OK 74728
  • Average temperature – 34 degrees
  • Hiking the scenic Cedar Bluff Nature Trail.
  • Renting a kayak.
  • Stopping by the visitor center and discovering all the activities going on.

13. Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island, Rhode Island

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach summer getaway, I’d recommend Block Island. It is an incredible destination that houses the historic Southeast Lighthouse, the natural clay cliffs of the Mohegan Buffs, and many beautiful beaches.

You can sunbathe in warm weather, dip in the sea on any of the island’s scenic beaches (notably Crescent Beach), sail, bicycle, or hike—plenty of things to do!

I recommend heading there for the famous annual Fourth of July parade, which includes a fabulous fireworks display! There are also plenty of accommodations on the island, ranging from cute Bed and Breakfasts and rental cottages to beachfront hotels.

  • Visitor’s Center Address:   4 Center Rd, New Shoreham, RI 02807
  • Average temperature  – 25 degrees
  • Hiking up Mohegan Bluffs and seeing spectacular ocean views before heading down 141 steps to the beautiful beach.
  • Visiting Ballard’s which had a lively vibe with live music, sunshine, and Tiki bars.
  • Hiring a bike and exploring the island to see the famous lighthouses, Great Salt Pond, and nature trails.

14. Grand Teton National Park , Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park

Set amidst the spectacular Teton Mountain Range in Northwestern Wyoming , Grand Teton National Park, I love the breathtaking scenery, alpine lakes, and hiking trails!

I recommend boat trips to Jenny Lake or the Massive Jackson Lake, and for more adventurous people, go  rafting down the rapids.

The 100-mile John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway is the perfect challenge for keen cyclists, taking in some of the park’s best wildlife and scenery.

Climbing enthusiasts can tackle Grand Teton, the tallest peak in the 40-mile Teton Range. My favorite highlight, though, was the spectacular sunsets!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 1 Teton Park Rd, Moose, WY 83012
  • Soaking up the scenery on a 10-mile float trip down the Snake River in Jackson Hole.
  • Driving up to Signal Mountain and admiring the Instagrammable panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Hiking along the trail by Jenny Lake, which took me to Inspiration Point and the Insta-worthy Hidden Falls.

15. Lake Chelan, Washington

Lake Chelan Summer

Beautiful Lake Chelan, between Seattle and Spokane, is a popular summer resort town with gorgeous scenery and a laid-back vibe!

Wenatchee National Forest, Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park, and Lake Chelan State Park are located along its shores and offer miles of scenic hiking trails.

At its Northernmost point, it provides a gateway to the breathtaking wilderness of Northern Cascades National Park.

During the summer, it is the perfect place to experiment with various water sports. I’d also recommend hanging out on beautiful beaches, hiking spectacular lakeside trails, and enjoying local produce at the Evening Farmers Market.

  • Visitor’s Center Address:   216 E Woodin Ave, Chelan, WA 98816
  • Average temperature – 30 degrees
  • Checking out the fun Slidewaters Waterpark, rated in the top 15 in the country!
  • Enjoying mouth-watering wines at Tuscan-inspired Tsillan Cellars & Sorrento’s Ristorante.
  • Going to the High Trek Chelan and trying out their fun ziplines and obstacle courses.

16. Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park Summer

In July, the stunning natural scenery at this spot is ablaze with color, and thrill-seekers will find the Middle Fork Whitewater at its best, with water levels perfect for an exhilarating raft ride!

I love that the flowers are in full bloom, and the huckleberries are at their sweetest from mid-July!

All the trails and roads are open in July, and I personally think it’s the perfect time for a drive along the scenic Going-To-The-Sun Road.

Miles of hiking trails traverse the park, and there is a vast collection of exciting wildlife, including rare wolverines, Canadian Lynx black bears, grizzlies, and mountain lions.

Although July is usually warm and temperate, I recommend preparing for any eventuality as the weather can change on a whim, and parts of the park are incredibly remote!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: West Glacier, MT 59936
  • Average temperature  – 21 degrees
  • Driving along the going-to-the-sun road is one of the most scenic journeys in the park, featuring an array of viewpoints.
  • Catching a sunrise at the hidden Two Medicine landmark was an unforgettable experience!
  • Dipping my feet in Lake McDonald to cool down on a hot day.

17. Ely, Minnesota

Ely, Minnesota - Places to go in the summer

Ely is a historic city in Minnesota. It has an estimated 3,500 residents and a summer temperature of 27°C in July.

Famous for housing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, it’s one of my favorite destinations for lakeside activities, including canoeing!

It has a rustic, rugged feel, but the quaint town is filled with interesting independent shops, cozy eateries and a thriving art scene.

I recommend visiting the International Wolf Centre, dedicated to educating the public about wolves, and going on the family-friendly Kawishiwi Falls Trail, which will take you to 70-foot-drop Kawishiwi Falls and Fall Lake Dam.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 1600 E Sheridan St, Ely, MN 55731
  • Renting a paddleboard and heading across the peaceful Bear Head Lake at the State Park.
  • Going for a hike along the Kawishiwi Falls Trail and admiring the impressive waterfalls.
  • Indulging in mouth-watering treats at Northern Expressions.

18. Monterey, California

Visiting Monterey in July

I was super keen to see Monterey and the historic Cannery Row Historic District, and when I visited, I knew it had to be included on this list!

Summer doesn’t get too hot here, but the weather is pleasant, and I loved its unique boutique hotels, cute independent shops, and relaxed seafood resturants where I could gaze at the waves and ocean views while dining.

I recommend walking through Monterey State Historic Park to see some of the area’s oldest and most significant buildings, including the cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo (the oldest in California).

Plenty of outdoor pursuits are available, with excellent surfing and wildlife spotting along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail and The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary .

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 419 Webster St Suite 100, Monterey, CA 93940
  • Average temperature – 20 degrees
  • Wandering around the setting for John Steinbeck’s novel, Cannery Row Downtown, which was filled with cool shops and restaurants.
  • Taking in the coastline views at Point Sur Lightstation, a historic landmark overlooking the ocean.

19. Marquette, Michigan

Marquette, Michigan - summer resort

I personally think this is an excellent choice for a low-key, peaceful summer vacation far away from the crowds of the more popular summer resorts.

It’s a quaint, relaxed, small city surrounded by miles of breathtaking hiking and biking trails and beautiful inland lakes that give way to larger acres of water bodies and scenic shorelines. The water activities here are endless, ranging from kayaking and canoeing to swimming and rafting.

History and art lovers will enjoy this place, as it is also home to several historic lighthouses and a thriving art scene. Head for Marquette Arts and Culture Centre for excellent art exhibits, thought-provoking lectures, and an extraordinary musical series.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 2201 US 41 South ,  Marquette ,  MI   49855
  • Average temperature – 24 degrees
  • Swimming out to the rock islands and lagoons at McCarty’s Cove before relaxing along the sandy shoreline.
  • Biking the scenic Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
  • Taking a sightseeing tour, where I saw the best spots and learned about the area’s history.

20. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park - best places to visit in July

Mount Rainier National Park spans 369 sq miles of incredible scenery around the imposing 14,411 ft stratovolcano at its center.

This place always enchants me, and I love that the foothills are a fantastic blend of subalpine meadows, valleys, and waterfalls cascading from rocky plateaus. The scenery is seriously spectacular here!

From July through August, wildflowers transform the Paradise area of the park in an abundance of color, and the slightly warmer temperatures make it the perfect time for hiking (but you’ll still need to wrap up warm).

Numerous trails are available to explore, depending on your preferences for wildlife spotting, uninterrupted views, or rushing falls.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Sunrise Park Rd, Ashford, WA 98304
  • Average temperature – 11 degrees
  • Enjoying an evening of stargazing before watching a vibrant sunrise over the landscape.
  • Visiting the stunning Myrtle Falls, which offered the most gorgeous views of the park.
  • Crossing the suspension bridge located along Grove of the Patriarchs Trail which took me through the oldest trees in the park.

Best Time to Visit Mexico: Month by Month Breakdown

Mexico is a vast country and there is a huge range of seasons and climates across the different regions.

The weather can be roughly split into a wet and a dry season, although this mostly counts in the tropical regions south of Mexico City.

The north has a more arid, desert-like climate, while the central regions are at high altitude and enjoy much cooler weather than the rest of Mexico.

Mexico also has distinct low and high seasons when it comes to tourism, especially in touristy destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. These generally coincide with the wet and dry seasons too.

To inspire your next trip, here’s our guide on the best time to visit Mexico!

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Mexico (Country Guide)

Table of Contents

Mexico Dry Season

Luxury resort pool in the Maya Riviera Mexico

The dry season is the best time to visit Mexico, and it falls between November and April.

This is peak season, so you can expect things to be busy, especially over Christmas, but Mexico is such a vast country that you can always find a way to escape the crowds.

Here’s our month by month breakdown for Mexico’s dry season.

Novem b er  in Mexico

Swimming with the Whale Sharks in Mexico

November is the start of the dry season, and for travelers, this could be the best time to visit Mexico.

Prices are still low and tourist numbers are still small compared to what’s going to hit the top destinations in December. This is a good time to visit popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta, as you’ll find some great deals on flights and accommodation.

As the rainy season has only just ended, it’s not the best time for diving yet, but head to Baja California and you’ll catch the start of the Whale Shark season.

Tropical Yucatan is getting much cooler and a lot less humid, so now is the time to explore the jungles and to visit those lost Mayan Ruins without working up too much of a sweat.

December in Mexico

Luxury Resort in the Maya Riviera Mexico

Weather-wise, December is easily the best time to visit Mexico. However, everyone else has the same idea too, and December is the worst time to visit Mexico if you’re looking for a quiet vacation away from the crowds!

In December, especially over Christmas and New Year, the resorts of Cancun and the Maya Riviera are packed out and prices are at their peak. It’s no different in other popular tourist spots either, such as Puerto Vallarta or Baja California.

The weather is crisp, sunny and dry though, and you’re not likely to have a single rainy day. If you’re not having a beach holiday though, then take a trip to explore the indigenous culture of Oaxaca or Chiapas where you can find beautiful weather.

January in Mexico

Mexico City

January is just as busy as December, at least for the first two weeks. This is peak season across Mexico, especially in Cancun and along the Pacific Coast.

Travel to Mexico towards the end of January though and you can start to get a few good deals again, as the crowds start to thin out.

Weather-wise this is a great time to explore the south, so enjoy the dry weather along the coast, and visit Mayan archeological sites like Palenque or Chichen Itza.

Mexico City is lovely in January, as are the central highlands, although it can get chilly at night.

February in Mexico

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog on Isla San Francisco in Baja

In February the weather starts to get hotter, especially in the tropical south. Up north and in the mountains it’s still very cool, however.

You can expect the odd rain shower across the country but for the most part, this is still a beautiful time to travel around Mexico .

You’ll get lower prices in Cancun while the diving and snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel Island is glorious, with sparkling clear water.

This is the perfect time to visit Baja California, on the Pacific Coast, where you’ll be right in the middle of the whale watching season, and you’ll have the chance to swim with Whale Sharks.

March in Mexico

The Cancun beach strip in Mexico

March brings a mixed bag when it comes to crowds and the weather. This can be the middle of Spring Break, so it’s a good idea to avoid the big tourist hotspots if this isn’t your scene. If you’re looking to party though, then head straight to Cancun or Tijuana.

Equally, if Easter falls in March then it can be busy everywhere, although this is a great time to soak up the local culture during Semana Santa, the holy week.

Weatherwise, it can be a little more unpredictable. The south sees more rain while the north is heating up and seeing a few thunderstorms too.

April in Mexico

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog exploring cenotes in Mexico

Like March, it can be a little unpredictable in April too, so plan your trip in advance to avoid spring break dates or Easter holidays, which can both fall this time of the year.

April is the last month of the dry season, although you will see the weather starting to turn. The colder winter months are over and summer is on the way, which means that along with the rain it’s getting much hotter, everywhere.

This is your last chance to see the whales and Whale Sharks in Baja California before they move on for the summer, and it’s the last chance to get really good visibility and diving conditions around Cozumel Island and along the Maya Riviera.

As the weather heats up, this is a great time to start exploring those high altitude destinations in Central Mexico, such as Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende, where you can escape the heat.

Mexico Wet Season

Mexico colonial city

Mexico’s wet season runs from May through to October, however, this varies across the country. The south sees the most rain, and hurricanes can lash the coastlines.

It’s cooler and drier in the north this time of the year, where the climate isn’t tropical. The wet season is not the best time to visit the south of Mexico, but there are still plenty of great deals and places to explore outside of this traditional tourist hotspot.

May in Mexico

May is officially the start of the wet season, and you can guarantee that it’s going to be hot and it’s probably going to be rainy.

This is a good month for shoulder season travel though because you can avoid the high season crowds in places like Cancun or the Pacific Coast.

It’s fine if you don’t mind a little humidity and have a swimming pool to cool off in because you’ll only get a few hours of rain a day at most.

It’s even better in Baja California, where you can enjoy dry weather for most of May, while temperatures soar into the 30s. Mexico City has cooler weather, and it feels like it’s summer, making the capital a great option in May.

June in Mexico

chichén itzá, mexico

June is not the best time to visit Mexico, although you can get some cheap deals on flights and hotels.

The reason it’s cheap though is because it’s the start of hurricane season. While hurricanes are rare, it’s definitely going to rain, although if you don’t mind risking that for a few hours a day it might be worth it

Instead of going to the coast though, stick to the central highlands, where it’s much cooler and there’s much less rain.

July in Mexico

Remote beach in Baja Mexico

July is just as hot and rainy, and while you can get cheap deals at the resorts and great value flights across the country, it’s really not the best time to visit Mexico.

Hurricanes can hit the Caribbean and Pacific Coast, while everywhere is hot, stuffy and humid.

You get the best weather in Baja California, but make sure you have a swimming pool where you can cool off.

The other option is to stay at altitude, as you’ll find that while Central Mexico is hot, it’s not quite as hot as the coast – especially at night time.

August in Mexico

Puebla Mexico

In August, it’s still going to be uncomfortably hot across Mexico, although temperatures will start to cool off slightly, especially in the higher altitude areas of the country around Mexico City.

This is still very much hurricane season, so be prepared for this if you’re traveling to Cancun or the Pacific Coast in August.

On the plus side, there are few other vacationers around in August and the prices can be very low, on both flights and hotels!

September in Mexico

The view from the Pyramid of the Sun - best time to visit Mexico

In September, things are starting to look up again when it comes to the weather. This is still the rainy season, but the worst is behind you, and September can be a great time to escape the crowds and score some good deals.

It’s a good time to be in Mexico City, where the rain is slack anyway and the high altitude means cooler climes.

It’s also Independence day in September, so you can expect plenty of parades and fiestas.

October in Mexico

October is the best time to visit Mexico because of the Day of the Dead.

In October, it’s the last month of the rainy season and the hurricane season, and actually this can be the best time to visit Mexico.

Rainfall will be minimal, but prices are still low, so head to the beaches and make the most of the deals before the high season crowds arrive in November and December.

As a bonus, the end of October is also when you’ll be able to celebrate Day of the Dead across Mexico.

One of the “ABC” islands along with Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao is located in the southwestern Caribbean. July weather is hot and breezy with temperatures reaching the mid-80s, so the seas are warm and ideal for swimming, diving, and snorkeling. Because of its southerly location, Curaçao is outside the hurricane zone, which is sometimes a concern in the Caribbean during summer and early fall. Beaches are the main attraction here, but the island also features incredible sightseeing in its cities and towns. Willemstad’s Dutch colonial buildings — including Handelskade, a rainbow of waterfront buildings — museums, street art, restaurants, and nightclubs make a visit worthwhile. Hike or take a Jeep tour to the top of Christoffel Mountain for a panoramic view of the island.

Where to Stay: Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort is set on six waterfront acres near Willemstad. Sandals Royal Curaçao is an adults-only all-inclusive resort ideal for a romantic getaway.

In July, beaches are the main draw, along with music festivals and the annual menú de gamba , the "prawn menu" celebrating the local catch in Palamós. Castell Beach, one of the most beautiful on the Costa Brava, is located in Palamós near the remains of an ancient Iberian village dating to the 6th century B.C.E.

Where to Stay: The new Zel Costa Brava features 214 guest rooms, a pool, tennis, on-site dining, and Mediterranean views. The lifestyle hotel brand was created by Rafael Nadal and Meliá Hotels.

Humpback whales are arriving on their migration from the north, and they can be seen until around September. Heading south from Cairns to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, visitors will find beaches, theme parks, and slightly cooler weather, perfect for hiking in Lamington National Park among waterfalls, ancient trees, and a tropical rainforest. If you love lively, festive atmospheres — and don't mind crowds — you might want to visit Paris , where the Olympics will take place from July 26-Aug. 11. Earlier in the month, Bastille Day (July 14) is a national holiday, celebrated with a military parade, free concerts, and fireworks at the Eiffel Tower. Summer is a lovely time for a boat ride on the Seine, and if there’s a rain shower, duck into the Galeries Lafayette or visit one of the city’s many wonderful museums. 10 Best Places in Mexico to Visit on Your Next Trip

W ith centuries of Indigenous cultural history, ancient ruins , and resplendent cities, Mexico is brimming with beautiful places. But this can make choosing a place (or several places) to visit in Mexico a challenge. Do you want to spend your days stretched on a beach in the Yucatán Peninsula or in idle relaxation sitting beside a pueblo plaza? Then again, why not both?

To help you decide, here are our top picks for the best places to visit in Mexico.

  • Location: Oaxaca
  • Come for: a heady mix of traditional and experimental cuisine, ancient ruins, and a vibrant arts scene
  • Where to stay: Hotel Sin Nombre

Tucked high up in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, Oaxaca is a place where overflowing baskets of spices and textiles sit beside cafés serving up artisanal coffee. Cuisine is a pillar of the city's soul, whether in the form of crispy, coal-grilled tlayudas on the street or high-brow rooftop cocktails.

A capital for mezcal artistry, Oaxaca is known for its dozens upon dozens of mezcalerias . Pull up a chair at La Mezcalerita , a veritable library of mezcal, with three downstairs rooms and an appealing rooftop patio-perfect for sunset.

How to get to Oaxaca

The most direct way to get to Oaxaca is to fly into the Oaxaca International Airport (OAX). Travelers can also connect in Mexico City for the nearly 90-minute flight.

  • Location: Quintana Roo
  • Come for: tranquil lagoon life that is still flying relatively far below the typical tourist radar
  • Where to stay: Hotel Makaaba Eco-Boutique

Laguna de Bacalar is the second largest lake in Mexico, with colors that change from aquamarine to cobalt because of the different depths of the water, earning it the nickname "The Lake of Seven Colors." Bacalar has a reputation for eco-friendly resorts, hidden cenotes, and mangrove channels for kayaking. Life is slow-paced here-lights are usually out by 9 p.m., and that's how the locals like it.

How to get to Bacalar

Bacalar is a four-hour drive south of Cancun, which helps it retain its remote vibe. In December 2023 , the opening of the airport in Tulum will cut that drive nearly in half. Travelers can also fly into the city of Chetumal and drive for 30 minutes.

3. Puerto Escondido

  • Come for: epic surf and the culture that comes with it, plus undeveloped beaches, bioluminescent bays, and hot springs
  • Where to stay: Villas Carrizalillo

Mexico is in a constant state of development and some foreign investors have set their sights on coveted real estate. But in this port town, visitors can still eat fish tacos underneath shady palapas , grab an open-air collective van (a one-way ride will cost roughly 10 pesos), travel to the market downtown, and surf along windswept beaches at dawn, in large part thanks to efforts from tourists, expats, and locals to control development.

How to get to Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido has a very small airport. For an accessible alternative, travelers can connect in Mexico City or Guadalajara. A larger international airport is in Huatulco, which is about 90 minutes away.

4. Isla Holbox

  • Come for: idyllic car-free island living with spectacular beaches, yoga, and a growing foodie scene
  • Where to stay: Ser Casasandra

This island off the coast of the Yucatan peni nsula feels as much Caribbean as it does Mexican, with a blend of car-free streets and the lilt of steel drums. Though admittedly less Robinson Crusoe–esque than it used to be thanks to an infusion of boutique resorts like Nomade Holbox and NÁAY Boutique Hotel Punta Coco, this remains a place for freshly caught and grilled seafood and beaches that seem to stretch on forever.

How to get to Isla Holbox

Fly into Cancun International Airport and take a two-hour taxi, or hop on an ADO bus up for a four-hour ride to Chiquila. From there, take the 15-minute ferry to Isla Holbox.

5. Puerto Vallarta

  • Location: Jalisco
  • Come for: a beach-meets-city scene where locals and tourists mingle
  • Where to stay: Casa Kimberly

Puerto Vallarta is a city where bars, restaurants, or shops will unlikely accept U.S. dollars, unlike in other resort towns. It buzzes with action from both visitors and locals, whether through the pulse of the Malecon boardwalk until the wee hours or lively cobblestone streets of Zona Romantica. At the end of the day, travelers can enjoy sunset above the Bay of Banderas.

How to get to Puerto Vallarta

Several U.S. airports, including New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and Los Angeles (LAX) offer direct flights to Puerto Vallarta.

  • Come for: all-inclusive hotels, white-sand beaches, and a lively downtown
  • Where to stay: Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa

Cancún is what put the Mexican Caribbean on the map, for good reason: Few places offer better white-sand beaches or all-inclusive resorts than this spot on the Yucatán Peninsula. Cancun's once locals-only downtown is starting to gain traction from travelers who want to venture outside the Hotel Zone. Here, visitors can get another taste of the city when encountering its street art, taco trucks, and bustling markets like Mercado 28.

How to get to Cancun

With the second busiest airport in Mexico , it's one of the easiest places in the country to access.

7. Guanajuato

  • Location: Guanajuato
  • Come for: colorful architecture and growing wine tourism
  • Where to stay: 1850 Hotel Boutique

Guanajuato is a great jumping-off point for exploring the state's growing wine route (there are more than 30 wineries in the Guanajuato Grape and Wine Association) as well as regional dishes like enchiladas mineras -head to Enchiladas de Lupe for a delicious one. The city also hosts the annual Festival Internacional Cervantino , which invites musicians, theater performers, and other artists from all over the world to showcase their culture.

How to get to Guanajuato

The main airport in the state of Guanajuato is in Leon, about an hour's drive from the city. It has a few direct flights from the USA, but travelers can get to the airport with direct flights from Tijuana, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Monterrey.

8. Mexico City

  • Location: Mexico City
  • Come for: world-class hotels, museums, and restaurants
  • Where to stay in Mexico City: Circulo Mexicano

No visit to Mexico is complete without exploring the world-renowned restaurants , Aztec ruins, and 24/7 vibe of its capital city. Walk around Roma Norte and other vibrant neighborhoods, each one offering something different from the next. Thanks to its efficient (and cost-effective) mass transit, devouring everything from Diego Rivera murals to inventive cocktails from the top floors of luxury hotels is possible.

How to get to Mexico City

Mexico City's airport has direct flights from all major U.S. gateways.

  • Location: Puebla
  • Come for: mole, mole, mole!
  • Where to stay: Banyan Tree Puebla

Puebla has fostered a scene that is just as proud of its heritage and tradition (it's said to have a church for every day of the year) as it is of its experimental restaurants, with eateries like Moyuelo and Áttico 303 fusing traditional Mexican ingredients with international techniques and recipes. The city's kitchens and street carts offer temptations like mole (a dried chile sauce) in every shade, overstuffed bread roll sandwiches known as cemitas , and tacos arabes stuffed into fluffy lavash-style bread.

How to get to Puebla

Puebla has its own international airport with direct flights from Houston (IAH), but consider flying into Mexico City, which has ample connections. From the Benito Juarez airport, you can hop aboard an express bus and ride two hours to Puebla.

10. San José del Cabo

  • Location: Baja California Sur
  • Come for: Cabo beaches and fantastic dining without the overwhelming hum of tourists
  • Where to stay: Acre Baja

Los Cabos consists of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, which are connected by a long stretch of resort-lined roads known as the Tourist Corridor. As Cabo San Lucas is the more visited of the two, San José del Cabo is where travelers go to escape the crowds. Those visiting San José del Cabo can experience a thriving farm-to-table scene thanks to organic farms Flora Farms, Tamarindos, and Acre Baja that double as outdoor restaurants.

How to get to San José del Cabo

San Jose del Cabo's international airport is the gateway to Los Cabos. It has direct flights from most major U.S. hubs.

Yes, Mexico has superior beaches, but there is much more to the country besides sun and sea.
