How to Visit Christ the Redeemer

  • Post author: Monique Martins
  • Post last modified: February 15, 2024

One of the Seven New Wonders of the Modern World, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is a must-see attraction to those who visit Rio de Janeiro.

Standing with his arms open from the 710-meter-high tall (2,329 feet) Corcovado Mountain, and surrounded by the vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, the iconic monument is the best known Brazilian image in the world.

To make sure you get the most out of your visit, we have prepared a complete guide on how to visit Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, including all essential information and insider tips.

How to visit Christ the Redeemer

Things to do in Rio de Janeiro: Christ the Redeemer

Corcovado Mountain is located inside the Tijuca’s National Park, a rainforest within the city boundaries considered one of the world’s largest urban forests.

Every year more than 1 million people visit the famous landmark, that is also the first open-air sanctuary of the world, marveling at the most beautiful view overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Basically, there are 3 main ways to visit the attraction:

Corcovado Train

How to Visit Christ the Redeemer: Corcovado Train

Corcovado train is a centenarian eco-friendly electric train that takes you to the monument in a 20-minute journey through the Atlantic Forest (part of Tijuca’s National Park). It is the most popular and, in our opinion, the best way to get to the top.

Inaugurated in 1884 by Emperor D. Pedro II, the Corcovado railroad is the oldest tourist train route in the country.

The Corcovado train station is in the Cosme Velho neighborhood. The best way to get there is by bus (from Copacabana: line 583) or Uber/taxi.

Tickets include a round trip and the entrance to visit the monument. You can purchase at the box office or on the attraction website here . We highly recommend buying your ticket in advance to avoid queues, especially during the high season.

Carioca Tip:

The best place to sit on the way up is on the right side of the train (and on the left side downhill). Prepare the camera, and be alert to observe the hidden view in the woods and the animals of the Tijuca forest, such as birds and little monkeys.

* Trem do Corcovado:  Rua Cosme Velho, 513 Cosme Velho – Rio de Janeiro – RJ.

Website: https://www.tremdocorcovado.rio/, paineiras - corcovado official van.

Paineiras van official website

Another way to visit the monument is to go by van, the official transport of Tijuca National Park.

You can choose one of the following boarding points: embark at Praça do Lido in Copacabana, at Praça do Largo do Machado, or directly at the paineiras visitor center.

The visitor center is a stop worth visiting. They have a permanent exhibition about the history of the forest and Christ the Redeemer, as well as a souvenir store, a coffee shop and a nice restaurant with an outdoor deck designed six meters high from the woods.

All vans have air conditioning and the green seal because it has low emission of pollutants. They ascend through the Tijuca forest to the monument, stopping at the Paineiras visitor center.

Tickets also include a round trip and entrance to the monument. The value changes according to your departure location (Copacabana and Largo do Machado are the same price). You can buy it on the official website  here or at the box offices at the boarding points.

* Corcovado Paineiras : Estrada das Paineiras, S/N – Rio de Janeiro.

Christ-the-redeemer-hike-riobycariocas

Although we love hiking and the idea of visiting Christ the Redeemer by doing it is a very appealing option, we must warn you: this particular hike is neither easy nor safe.

The hike to the monument entrance begins at Parque Lage in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood. It is a challenging 4-hour hike and requires a higher level of fitness. While it starts out easy, it gets really steep, and at some points, you have to pull yourself up to the top using chains and ropes.

Secondly, we are afraid to say it is not a safe option. Unfortunately, there have been some reports of robberies on the path, so even the Cariocas are not doing it anymore, which makes it even more desert.

But if you really want to have this experience while in Rio, we highly recommend hiring a knowledgeable local tour guide to do this hike. Contact us , and we will select one of our licensed tour guides to guide you safely.

General tips for visiting Christ the Redeemer

 • Avoid peak times. Even though the monument is always crowded (after all, it is the number 1 attraction in Rio de Janeiro), we suggest you go early in the morning (before 9 am) or late afternoon (after 3:30 pm). Generally, there are few crowds, less heat, and better visibility at these times.

• Buy your tickets in advance. Regardless of the chosen option to visit the Christ, this is a golden rule: don’t wait until the last minute to buy your ticket. Even if you are visiting in the low season, you will likely find long queues there.

• Take a bottle of water with you and wear sunscreen . As you know, the temperature in Rio de Janeiro is always hot, and the humidity of the forest can bring a bit of discomfort.

• Don’t miss the chapel located under the base of the statu e. It is a small Catholic chapel dedicated to the Patroness of Brazil – Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Our Lady of Aparecida). Even if you are not religious, it’s a lovely small chapel that is usually missed by visitors.

• Be careful with pickpockets, especially during high season . Although there’s always police surveillance and a municipal guard helping visitors at the top, be aware of the crowds, especially at the train station’s entrance.

Christ the Redeemer: By Train

Guide to the Christ the Redeemer: one of the ways to go up to the top is by train.

The Corcovado train (or  bondinho  as it’s known in Portuguese) slowly ambles up Corcovado mountain through the Atlantic forest, allowing visitors to experience the largest urban rainforest in the world in close proximity.

To take the train, go to the Trem do Corcovado station at the base of the Corcovado peak. To get there, you can either take a UBER or the metrô to Largo do Machado, then the Integration Bus (Ônibus de integração) in the direction of Cosme Velho. The exact address is: R. Cosme Velho, 513 – Cosme Velho

Jump off in front of the São Judas Tadeu church, and the Trem do Corcovado or Corcovado Train station is right there. The train leaves every 20 or 30 minutes and you don’t need to schedule a set time to go.

The ride up takes about 20 minutes. The train leaves the train station between 8:20 am and 5 pm every day, and the last ride back down is between 6:30 pm and 7 pm.

You can buy tickets at the train station, but queues can get big. If you hate queues you have a couple of options. You can buy a ticket online at the Trem do Corcovado’s main site or buy it through GetYourGuide . You can also book a tour like this Rio: Christ Redeemer by Train & City Highlights Morning Tour.

⚠️ Be aware that if you do buy your Christ the Redeemer tickets beforehand, you’ll have to pick a specific time to go up by train. You MUST go up at that specific time. For example, if your ticket says 9:00 am, you cannot show up at 11:00 am to try to get on the train. You should also arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand.

Christ the Redeemer Cog Train Ticket Pric es

The prices include the train up, back down, and the entrance to Christ the Redeemer. So how much does it cost to visit Christ the Redeemer? Be aware the Christ the Redeemer tickets price can be different during high and low season.

  • For adults (including students) – R$ 93,50 (USD$19.96)
  • Children between 5 and 11 – R$64 (USD$13.05)
  • Seniors more than 60 years – R$32 (USD$6.52)
  • Children under 4 – free

Christ the Redeemer: By Van

cristo redentor tour

The official air conditioned van leaves from three points in the city, which makes getting around that little bit easier.

The points are at (1) Praca do Lido in Copacabana , (2) next to the metro at Lago do Machado and at (3) Città America in Barra da Tijuca . You can buy the tickets at the bus points (which includes the way there, the way back, and the entrance for the Christ), but it’s worth buying online – the queues have been known to be up to an hour and a half during high season.

⭐️ You can take a taxi or non-official van (the non-official van costs about R$30 and leaves from Cosme Velho) to the Visitor Center, then take an official van the rest of the way (they’re the only ones that are allowed to do that last stretch up to the Christ).

Copacabana Location

The vans leave from Praça do Lido at posto 2 (Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana between Rua Ronald de Carvalho and Rua Belfort Roxo). They leave every 15 minutes, and the non-stop route takes about 45 minutes to arrive with the usual traffic.

The van does pick-ups in Copacabana every day between 8 am and 5 pm. The final trip back down Corcovado is between 6 pm and 6:30 pm.

Largo do Machado

The vans leave from Praça do Largo do Machado in front of the church and happen every 15 minutes. It will take about 30 minutes in all to get from there to the entrance to the Christ. The van does pick-ups at Lago do Machado every day between 8 am and 5 pm. The final trip back down Corcovado is between 6 pm and 6:30 pm.

Christ the Redeemer: By Foot

cristo redentor tour

I’m saving the best for last, as the hike up Corcovado to the Christ is definitely a personal favorite! I love being surrounded by the Atlantic forest and the cute little monkeys. Plus, it’s a trail that starts at the beautiful Parque Lage ( tip: stop by there for a pre-hike breakfast ).

This trail is FREE, easy to do, and can definitely be done independently. HOWEVER, over the years, there have been multiple reports of muggings on the hike going up with groups of robbers taking mobile phones and other items. In 2017 the trail was closed , and in 2019 another incident happened .

Whilst it is more likely nothing will happen, these things do happen. So it is best to never do the hike alone and leave all belongings of value at home. In the worst-case scenario, if you do get approached by criminals, hand over any belongings calmly and always cooperate . This information is not to scare you! It is simply informative of all possibilities – remember, knowledge is power.

Christ the Redeemer Ticket Prices

If you do the hike, you can buy your ticket for the Christ there (expect queues in the high season!) or on the official Christ the Redeemer Official website.

BE AWARE: If you buy the ticket at the entrance to the Christ, make sure you take enough cash as you can ONLY pay in cash there, they don’t accept cards.

  • Adults – R$55.50 (USD$11.30)
  • Seniors over 60 and children under 11 are free.

🌴 Regardless of how you reach the top of Corcovado, you’ll go through the Tijuca Rainforest or Floresta Tijuca. At 12.4 square miles (3,212 hectares), this forest is one of the world’s largest urban rainforests.

When to Go to Cristo Rio de Janeiro

cristo redentor tour

As this place is all about the views, visibility is key, so try going either before 8:30 am or after 3:30 pm when there are fewer crowds, less heat, better visibility, and less haze. If it is cloudy or rainy, do NOT go, as the experience can be ruined if all you see from above are clouds.

The busiest times of the year are around Christmas, New Year, Carnival, holidays, and weekends.

Christ the Redeemer Brazil: History and Facts

cristo redentor tour

The question of who built the Rio Jesus Statue is often met with intrigue. The statue was the result of a collaborative effort, with French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski designing the figure and Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa overseeing the construction.

The monument was built over a period of nine years, from 1922 to 1931 . Despite the challenging terrain and complex construction process, the dedication of the team resulted in one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.

Truly, this is the iconic Christ the redeemer in Rio de Janeiro that everyone should visit. I love that you made this post as an ultimate guide. From how to get there and all the necessary travel expenses including the guide. I haven’t been here actually, and this has long been penned on my bucket list. Hopefully I can visit here soon. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

I haven’t been to Brazil yet and haven’t thought how to get to the Christ. It sounds like a great experience to hike there. It is good that there are so many different options to get there, really hope I can visit Brazil soon. Looks amazing 🙂

I am so sorry to hear that there have been ruberies along the hiking trail to the statue. I think it was great to go up by any means of transportation and come back on foot. I usually like these kind of combinations, as you can see a bit of everything. But well, Rio de janiero is in a country where not everything is perfect. Christ the Redeemer statue is a must see but you have to pay attention.

This really is a must-see in Rio! I went in 2016, and even then there were warnings about robberies on the hike although it was still open to the public. I took the bus up though, which was straightforward and easy. It was super busy though (Carnival Week) but still worth it!

thanks ! great post. Will go there tomorrow and see which one is the best way x

We had a great visit to Cristos Redentor however, they would not provide me with the seniors discount as I am Canadian and not Brazilian; same for my daughter-in-law as she is a student in Canada (even though she is Brazilian). Very confusing! He said it was due to the laws of that state, as we mentioned other tourist attractions provided the discount. We were not able to confirm this with anyone so it left us wondering how accurate this was.

Hello! If you look at the main website ( http://www.tremdocorcovado.rio/general-information.html ), it states that prices are: Adult – High Season*: R$ 82,00, Adult – Low Season*: R$ 67,00, Elderly (over 60 years old living in Brazil) R$ 26,00 & Child (5-11 years) R$ 52,00. As a result, students and seniors from outside of Brazil would not be able to get any discounts. We hope you still had an amazing time.

How to Visit Christ the Redeemer

Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (called Cristo Redentor in Portuguese) is one of the keystone tourist activities in Brazil, and is a “bucket-list” item for many people, both Christian and not. So when my sister came to visit, we knew it was a must-do, especially since I’d been living in the city for months already and hadn’t visited yet myself!

Christ the Redeemer is one of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World, and the first that I was ever able to visit (since then, I’ve been to the Colosseum and to Machu Picchu ).

Thankfully, visiting most tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro happens to be extremely easy and straightforward.

If you want to make it REALLY simple, Viator runs some pretty solid all-inclusive Christ the Redeemer tours, including an early-access Christ the Redeemer tour , to let you skip the crowds.

But if you’re down to try a bit of DIY to reach Christ the Redeemer, you can take an uber ( get your first ride free with this link ), or a taxi, or to save money: the bus .

It couldn’t be easier to take the bus to Christ the Redeemer as there is a stop directly outside of the tram station (more info on transportation options below).

On my visit with my sister, though, we were in a time crunch and had a lot to pack in to a short visit, so we just grabbed a cab.

We arrived at the opening (8am), and bought our Christ the Redeemer tickets (62 BR each at the time, including roundtrip tram transport).

Unfortunately, the first trips up the hill were sold out, so we had to wait about an hour to get on the tram (this can be solved by purchasing your Christ the Redeemer tickets ahead of time, see below).

After our wait, we boarded the tram (on the way up, try to sit on the left hand side when looking up at the mountain, and on the way down the right when looking down the mountain, for the best views), and made our way slowly to the top. The views were so picturesque and the clean air with a slight breeze was so refreshing.

Rio Brazil View

Once at the top, we climbed the stairs (there is a long wait for the elevator option – unless you have a physical impediment I would recommend just walking. It is not a long way and was not difficult.. and much quicker than waiting!) and reached the top.

The view from the top of Christ the Redeemer was perhaps the best of any Rio de Janeiro viewpoint I’ve visited. We got really lucky with a clear, sunny day.

Selfie Rio Brazil Corcovado

I was surprised not only by the great views but by how absolutely enormous the Christ the Redeemer statue is in person. But to be totally honest, I was most surprised by how absolutely PACKED with tourists it was, even this early in the morning (I can only imagine how crazy it gets later in the day)!

The day was a a great opportunity to spend quality time with my sister. Since moving abroad, I probably only get to spend about 10 hours of one-on-one time a year with her ( one of the many downsides of a lifestyle like mine ), which is crazy considering we once spent every day and every night together (we shared a room until I was 16), and have been really great friends our whole lives.

We’re really different, and I’m so grateful that she tries to meet me at my interests – especially travel. Before coming to visit me in Thailand, my sister didn’t even have a passport. Now she’s been stamped in both Thailand and Brazil (and since then: Mexico)!

You can take bus 583, 570 or 584 from Ipanema and Leblon to arrive to Christ the Redeemer. 583 also goes through Copacobana. While there is a bus stop directly across from the tram station, the signage is NOT good! (if you tell the bus driver when you get on that you are going to Corcovado, he will signal you when to get off. Or you can just keep an eye out for the trams) Getting to Christ the Redeemer by taxi: Simply tell your taxi driver you are going to “Christo Redentor”. (cost example: from Sheraton Leblon directly to the tram station is only 50 BR in morning traffic)

Would I Go to Christ the Redeemer Again?

Yes, and I did when my father visited. The view of the city is beautiful, and it’s definitely a “Must Do” activity while in Rio de Janeiro.

Miscellaneous Tips for Visiting Christ the Redeemer

– Bring water, snacks (both are severely overpriced), and maybe a towel/hankerchief (for dabbing your face – it’s hot!) – Don’t buy your souvenirs here (they’ll be three times as expensive) – do it at the Hippie Market on Sundays or the Copacabana night market (most nights of the week)… or even on the street – Buy your Chris the Redeemer tickets ahead of time, and book the tram time that you want here . Then you won’t be waiting an hour like us – Definitely go first thing in the morning – in the afternoon would be too hot – A clear day without clouds or fog makes a huge difference – try to plan accordingly if you can

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) of Serra Negra

Rua Cristo Redentor 157, Serra Negra, BRA

Inspired by the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that stands watch over Rio de Janeiro, Serra Negra’s own Christ the Redeemer statue sits atop the Pico de Fonseca hill, affording views over the city below.

Take the Teleférico Serra Negra chairlift and be whisked to the hilltop lookout where you can gaze up at the 60-foot (18-meter) high Christ the Redeemer statue. From there, admire views over Serra Negra and the distant Mantiqueira mountains. For something more adventurous, opt to hike up to the viewpoint from town; the uphill walk takes about 30 minutes.

The chairlift takes around 15 minutes each way.

One-way and return tickets are available; children under 8 are free.

There is a cafe at the top chairlift station where you can buy drinks and snacks and take in the city view.

The monument is not wheelchair accessible.

The Cristo Redentor statue is located in the town of Serra Negra, 93 miles (150 kilometers) north of Sao Paulo for about a 2.5-hour drive. To reach the hilltop from town, take the chairlift from Praça João Pessoa square, or drive up to the carpark at the foot of the hill, and from there you can climb the stairs to reach the monument.

The chairlift runs daily from 9am to 6pm, year-round. It’s busiest on summer weekends, when you might have to wait in line.

After visiting the Christ the Redeemer Statue, stroll the historic center of Serra Negra, where highlights include the early 20th-century church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, known for its beautiful murals. Just outside the city is the Alto da Serra mountain; it's a popular spot for hikers as well as a launch point for paragliding excursions, one of the region’s biggest draws.

Christ the Redeemer Statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Please note, that this is the first episode of our 360 movie about Rio de Janeiro. Stay tuned!

Each great city has its own landmark. Eiffel Tower in Paris, The Statue of Liberty in New York, Opera house in Vienna, and majestic Kremlin towers, famous Moscow landmark. But today we want to tell you about the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) in Rio de Janeiro.

On a 700-meter high Corcovado mountain stands a giant figure of Christ, his arms are stretched out towards the city, as if blessing the land. Each year, nearly 2 million tourists and residents climb to the top of the mountain to take a photo besides the monument "for good luck."

Christ the Redeemer Statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Back in 1859 a Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss was struck by the majestic beauty of the mountain of Corcovado while visiting Brazil. It was he who proposed to build a monument to Christ on top of the mountain. But at that time his aspirations were hard to accomplish: first the Brazilian Court had no money, and then the monarchy was replaced by the republican government. And since the church was legally separated from the state, the idea of building a monument was forgotten.

The mountain was too striking to be empty, and in the XXth century Catholic organizations of Rio de Janeiro raised the issue again. Signatures were collected, funds were raised and, as a result, this ambitious project was able to get more than 2 million reals ($250,000), a huge amount of money for that time.

Administration of Rio de Janeiro announced a competition for the best design, which attracted a lot of contenders. The winner was Heitor da Silva Costa. He proposed that the posture of Jesus Christ with the arms stretched to the sides would symbolize a cross, and a massive pedestal would symbolize the globe. Thus, the sculpture serves to give people one thought — "Everything is in God's hands."

The final design of the monument was done by artist Carlos Oswald. By proposing a number of corrections, he rejected the idea of a globe. And then, finally, everything was ready for the monument to be built.

The construction lasted for about nine years. For several reasons, first and foremost technological ones, the creation of a giant statue in Brazil at that time was impossible, so all parts, including the frame, were manufactured in France.

Disassembled parts were delivered to Brazil, and then transported by rail to the top of Mount Corcovado. The opening of the monument took place in October 12, 1931. This date is considered to be the "birthday" of the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro and is annually celebrated with a lot of festivities.

The statue was repaired twice — in 1980 and 1990, and in 2010 it underwent some cosmetic restoration: it was vandalized with strange inscriptions, such as "when the cat's away, the mice will play" (the meaning of this act remains unclear to this day).

In 1932 and 2000 the system of nighttime illumination was upgraded. In 2007, this famous Rio de Janeiro landmark was chosen as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.

The statue can be reached by electric train or by mountain road. While being driving to the statue, you can't stay away from the window even for a second because Brazilian nature is so picturesque. Observation desks offer astonishing views of Rio de Janeiro: the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, "Sugar Loaf" mountain, the Tijuca National Park, the Atlantic Ocean and the Guanabara Bay with a town at the base of the bay. Not to sound vain, please take a look at this breathtaking sight with the help of our new 360° video.

Thanks to AYRTON360 for his help in Rio de Janeiro and for the photopanorama from the top of the statue.
