Ibne Batuta who came here in 14th century called it Qali, it was also known as Gimhathiththa. During the Portuguese times (16th century) it was the main port of Sri Lanka. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. The major river in the area is the Gin River (Gin Ganga), which starts from Gongala Kanda and, passing villages such as Neluwa, Nagoda, Baddegama, Thelikada, and Wakwella, reaches the sea at Ginthota. Colombo Shore Excursions Entice, Excite, and Entertain
When Sri Lanka’s capital and largest port is on your cruise agenda, Colombo shore excursions offer a wealth of landmarks, attractions, history, and culture to entice you ashore. From beautiful beaches to historic temples, you’re sure to find an activity to keep you entertained during your stop from your cruise to India and beyond.
Colombo shore excursions present excellent opportunities to witness the port city’s fascinating mix of colonial influences from the British, Dutch, and Portuguese. On a leisurely motor coach tour, you’ll see the city’s most important sights, including the commercial district’s Pettah bazaar area, Town Hall, and Viharamahadevi Park, formerly Victoria Park, the city’s botanical gardens. You’ll pass by Cinnamon Gardens, once a thriving cinnamon plantation with 289 acres of cinnamon trees, now an upscale residential and government office center. You’ll also see the landmark red-and-white patterned Jami-ul-Alfar Mosque.
To see the city up close and learn about Sri Lankan culture, join Colombo shore excursions for a guided walk through Old Colombo. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and activities of the Pettah Floating Markets, where merchants offer everything from local produce to electronics. Hear about the market’s rejuvenation and the port’s importance as part of the East-West trade route. Tour the back streets and colorful alleys, and listen to tales of the city’s multicultural past and present. Stop for a drink at the Grand Oriental Hotel as a fitting conclusion to a lively tour.
For an excellent overview of Sri Lankan history and its rich cultural past, book shore excursions in Colombo to tour the impressive collections of the National Museum of Colombo, established in 1877 by the British Governor of Ceylon. See artwork from paintings to painted demon masks, plus guns, swords, antique furnishings, and the throne and crown of the last Kandyan monarch.
If you’re a sun worshipper at heart, take advantage of day trips to Negombo Beach, where you can sunbathe on the beach and swim in the cool, clear sea. From your Colombo cruise , visit the Negombo Beach Resort, where you can lounge poolside, enjoy a light lunch or afternoon tea, or stroll into town to do some souvenir shopping.
Join a tour guided by a Buddhist monk that offers a rare opportunity to visit one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka, Kelaniya Temple, believed to have been built around 543 B.C. and said to have been visited by Buddha. Admire the intact murals of the Kandyan Era and the modern murals depicting major events in Sri Lankan Buddhism. Observe sacred rituals, including the lighting of scented oils and the sprinkling of water on the Bodhi tree.

Day trip to Kandy Private charter flight
PROGRAMME : KANDY BY CHARTERED CINNAMON AIR FLIGHT
PERIOD : NOV 2018 TO APRIL 2019
Avail yourself of this unique opportunity of flying by private air taxi into the Centre of the Kandy plateau, site of the charming hill capital of Kandy. Considered to be the jewel of Sri Lanka, the town lies between hills at an altitude of 1525 feet (465 metres). Steeped in history, Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy. Its' most famous attraction is the Temple of the Tooth Relic, home to a sacred relic of Lord Buddha.Pick-up passengers from the Pier at Colombo Port and proceed either to the Colombo Airport (adjoining to the International Airport) / Waters Edge, Kotte (Colombo) / Paliyagoda (Kelaniya water aerodrome) to take the Air Craft transfer to Kandy.
Fly from Colombo by Cinnamon Air Craft into the heart of the Kandy plateau, landing in the charming foothill city of Kandy (Polgolla Reservoir / Victoria Reservoir). During the flight, you will be able to enjoy breathtaking aerial views. After deplaning at Victoria Reservoir, your trip continues by road to Kandy.
Nestled in a valley surrounded by hills and dense jungle bordering the city's gardens, Kandy enjoys a regal location, with a beautiful artificial lake and a pagoda in its center. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings which is a World Heritage Site. The name "Kandy" conjures visions of splendour and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around the Kandy Lake built by the last Sinhala king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798.The major highlight of the day will be your visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Built to house this precious relic of the Buddha, which is enshrined in an inner chamber, the temple is a work of art in itself. An impressive stone rampart encloses the shrine, which stands two storeys high on a platform in the centre of the courtyard. The upper gallery is connected to the first floor of the temple by a small bridge. There, behind a gilt railing, the golden reliquary rests on a silver table. It contains a nest of six boxes - the famous tooth lies within the smallest one. Ritual prayers by the monks are accompanied by beating drums, trumpets and hypnotic chants. (Please note: Flash photography is not permitted inside the temple.)Leaving the Temple of the Tooth, proceed to the Earl's Regency Hotel and enjoy lunch, including two beverages of your choice - domestic beer, house wine or soft drinks. Following lunch, transfer to Peradeniya.Visit the Botanical Garden in Perademiya. Peradeniya botanical garden was first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king and was expanded by the British. It is 147 acres in extent and provides an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers. Beautifully manicured, with huge trees and bright bougainvillea, it contains a wide variety of tropical and temperate flora, 4,000 species in all. There is also a spice garden with centuries old nutmeg trees, cinnamon, cardamoms, vanilla and clove trees, a medicinal herb garden with plants used in Ayervedic medicine, and an orchid house which houses 450 hybrid species.Later, drive back to the Pollgolla / Victoria Reservoir, where your chartered aircraft stands ready to fly you back to Colombo Airport (International Airport) / Waters Edge, Kotte (Colombo) / Paliyagoda (Kelaniya water aerodrome). Then conclude this memorable trip to Kandy with approx. 45-minute transfer to the pier in Colombo Port.
Important Notes: We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and light cotton clothing, although the temperature in Kandy may be slightly cooler than in Colombo. Moderate dress is required to enter the Temple of the Tooth Relic. No shorts or short skirts or tank tops and ladies must have their shoulders & upto the knees covered. Shoes & headwear must be removed prior to entering the temple (you may want to bring a pair of socks as the pavement could be warm). There is a short walk of about 10 minutes to the temple as vehicles cannot approach the building. Walking is on both firm and uneven surface, plus a considerable number of steps need to be climbed at the Temple of the Tooth. Being a popular pilgrim site, guests may encounter a line waiting to go inside. The chartered Air Craft is exclusive for you, but space is limited. Operation may be subject to weather. Temples could be crowded at certain times & on religiously important days. (Eg: Poya days, Weekends, Public Holidays, New year, etc).
- Charter basis flights could be arranged between 0700 Hrs and 1700 Hrs upon weather conditions acceptable to the Pilot in Command & Subject to the availability of air slots clearance. The carrier reserves the right to delay, extend, reschedule or cancel a flight for operational reasons - bad weather, VIP movements or other similar situations beyond the immediate control of the carrier.
- Also note that the Take Off point in Kandy area by Cinnamon Air flights will be; up to 06 pax – from Polgolla Reservoir & if 07 and up to 08 pax -from Victoria Reservoir due to the technical reasons (Payload restrictions at Polgolla).

With up to seven rapids to tackle, including the "Killer Fall" and "Rib Cage", rafters are guaranteed a challenge, but are also offered a chance to relax, with small calm stretches allowing a refreshing swim in the river to unwind.Ideal times are from May to December, although there are no "bad" times. Day excursion – Traditional Pottery works & Batik Experience
Traditional Pottery and Clay Tiles Today, we seek porcelain and ceramics to adorn our homes and beautify our dinner tables. These are considered as symbols of prestige. However, Sri Lanka has a heritage of pottery where the traditions have survived the test of time and find a unique niche in the world of pottery.Apart from using pottery or clay products for household devices, they were also utilized for religious and cultural practices.Visit a family engaged in traditional pottery for generations with the trade being conducted by all three generations within the family, and follow this by a modern outfit in producing roof tiles, the raw material may be the same and the process may be the same but the machinery is biblical years apart. Batik Experience with Eric Suriyasena Mr.Erik Suriyasena , one of Sri Lanka’s foremost artist, a designer, and a maestro in Batik creations.Mr.Suriyasena himself will greet you as you enter his private factory premises located in the city of Marawila. It is at this work house where he used to create his unique designs and experiment extensively. Thereafter each member of the group can select a ‘design art’ from the hundreds of arts that will be available or alternatively bring your own art design. Once this is done the mentors will provide you with the correct fabric that would suit your selected design. Thereafter Mr.Suriyasena will teach you how to engage in the traditional dyeing on cloth using a wax resist method.Take a break from this exciting session as you wait till your creations to dry by enjoying the hospitality of the Suriyasena family who will serve you with Tea, local cookies and chocolate cake.Later on explore the elegant galleries that display some of Mr.Suriyasena’s unique creations, a fusion of traditional, abstract and modern art. See what almost half century of expertise has evolved and listen to his fist hand account of how his designs have draped beauty queens to former prime ministers and how he has taken his ‘one of a kind’ designs around the word and displayed the art at leading art galleries in the world.
Day excursion – Colombo by TUK TUK (SUBA GAMAN)
Colombo is a vibrant, compact and interesting city, rich in culture, history and heritage. There is so much to see and do!The city traffic, however, is a littlis by taking a tuk tuk. The three-wheeled taxis, fondly known by locals as 'tuk-tuks' for the sound of their sputtering little engines, are notoriously fast, easy to park, and can manoeuver through the tiny streets of this compact city with ease, making it a great way to experience Colombo's e unruly sometimes—and the best way to get around the chaos, disorderly charm. This is about offering travellers the exhilarating experience of riding a tuk tuk within a safe environment assisted by trained, English-speaking drivers. It is easily, the most fun way to have your own local friend and guide to show you around with their own stories and inherent knowledge of the city.
