Carnival Cruise Line will launch biggest ships ever starting in 2029

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Carnival Cruise Line is going bigger than ever before with a new class of ships.

The cruise line will welcome the first of the three new vessels in the summer of 2029, each with more than 3,000 cabins and a full capacity of nearly 8,000 guests. The others will follow in 2031 and 2033, and the class will mark the largest ships in the history of the line and its parent company, Carnival Corp.

“We are proud to be known as America’s cruise line with tremendous guest loyalty and an outstanding team that has enabled us to deliver memorable vacations to over 100 million guests,” the line’s president, Christine Duffy, said in a news release Tuesday. “For this next generation ship, we are focused on creating innovative guest experiences that will take Carnival Cruise Line into the future with new fun features and excitement that we know our guests will love.”

The ships will be constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“We are excited to join forces with Carnival Cruise Line to debut a new class of ship, which will be the largest cruise ship ever constructed by Fincantieri and the largest ship ever built in Italy,” Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said. The cruise line will share additional specifics about the design and itineraries at a later date.

The news comes after Carnival announced orders for two more Excel class ships earlier this year, scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028. Those will join current Excel class ships Carnival Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee.

Carnival will also add two existing ships to its fleet from sister brand P&O Cruises Australia, which Carnival Corp. plans to retire in March 2025.

Carnival Legend to Return to Europe in 2026

  • August 26, 2024

Carnival Legend

The Carnival Legend is set to spend the summer of 2026 cruising in Europe, Carnival Cruise Line announced in a press release.

According to the company, the Spirit-class ship will offer a series of itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe during a seven-month season.

The recently announced program starts with a trans-Atlantic crossing in May 2026. The 14-day repositioning voyage sails from Miami to Dover, England, and features visits to destinations in the British Isles, including Liverpool, Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire.

While homeporting in Europe, the Carnival Legend will sail nine cruises from Dover, with varied nine- to 12-night itineraries in Northern Europe.

The schedule also includes six cruises from Civitavecchia (Rome) with either nine- or 12-night itineraries in the Mediterranean.

From Dover, the cruises showcase destinations such as Copenhagen, Denmark, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The 2002-built ship will also cruise to the British Isles, with stops in ports across Ireland, England and Scotland, in addition to one cruise with four stops in Iceland.

Scandinavia and Baltic cruises offer visits to Germany, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium, while Western Europe ports include those in Portugal, Spain and France.

From Civitavecchia, a series of nine-day and 12-day sailings include destinations across Italy, the Greek Isles, Turkey and Croatia.

Ports of call in the Mediterranean include Istanbul and Kusadasi (Ephesus) in Turkey; Piraeus (Athens) and Mykonos in Greece; as well as Naples (Amalfi/Pompeii), Italy; Split and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Completing its 2026 season in Europe, the Carnival Legend offers a 14-day Carnival Journeys voyage departing to Tampa.

The cruise sails from Barcelona in early November 2026, and features visits to Cartagena and Malaga, Spain; Gibraltar; and Bermuda.

Carnival Cruise Line is also offering a complete summer program in Europe in 2025 with the Carnival Miracle .

The Spirit-class vessel is scheduled to offer a series of cruises to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean departing from Dover and Civitavecchia.

The Miracle replaces the Carnival Legend, which has been sailing varied itineraries in the region since May 2024 .

Carnival Cruise shares important port news for all passengers

Many of the cruise ports in the Caribbean follow a simple blueprint.

Whether you are in Nassau, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Falmouth, or a handful of others, as you get off the ship you are presented with a selection of shops and restaurants. There will be duty-free shops selling liquor, cigarettes, perfume, and various beauty supplies.

You can also expect restaurants and bars, You might get local establishments and there are almost always chains like Senor Frogs and Margaritaville. There will also be shops selling local specialties.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line shares news on mandatory tips

That could mean vanilla extract and dark chocolate in Mexican ports. There will often be a local rum or other liquor and sometimes coffee beans native to wherever you happen to be visiting.

Some ports have spas with massage services while others will have those pools of fish that will eat the dead skin off your feet. In the nicest ports you get access to pools, maybe a beach, and in Costa Maya, a lazy river, all at no extra charge.

In some cases, the port shops include a pharmacy where you can buy many medicines that are not over-the-counter in the United States. That's a tempting proposition for many cruisers looking to both save money and get access to drugs their doctors have not prescribed.

That comes with its own set of dangers, of course, but buying from these pharmacies is very popular.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald was asked about one of these pharmacies on his Facebook page, and he shared more than the expected warning about being careful purchasing medicine outside of the US.

Carnival clears up a port misconception

Heald, who is recovering from Covid according to his own post, took time from not feeling well on his couch to share a recent message he received.

I purchased Furosemide (4ml) in Cozumel in 2019. I will be on the Liberty cruise that stops in Cozumel on 8/30. I just became a platinum cruiser with you guys and want to buy some more from the port pharmacy. I need to know about the current prices. Any idea how much that should currently cost? Do you have a list of pharmacy prices? Do we need to worry about contamination? Does Carnival still consider this place in their port to be a reputable pharmacy?

Furosemide, for what it's worth, is a diuretic used to treat high blood pressure and certain kidney-related problems,

Heald was quick to correct one misconception about not just the pharmacy, but all the shops in the various ports the cruise line calls on.

"Well then, I have no idea why this lady would think that I would know drug prices at this shop," he wrote. "However, perhaps that is because she and perhaps others think that we, Carnival Corporation, 'own' the pier at Puerto Maya and therefore own all the stores. We do not. So we cannot give any kind of recommendation for what is sold from this pharmacy and I do not have a price list."

Heald also stopped short of issuing a warning to the person who messaged him.

"I know the pharmacy she is referring to, and it has been there for many years. I remember there used to be huge signs that would state that you can buy just about anything over the counter," he added.

Carnival passengers share their pharmacy thoughts

Heald asked his followers to weigh in on the pharmacy question.

"Anyway, to help this lady and perhaps others please let them know if you have purchased anything from there and your thoughts on doing so," he shared.

Many passengers ignored that request and simply wished Heald well.

"Good morning, John. I’m so sorry you’re so under the weather today. Get plenty of rest this weekend. I hope you’re feeling better soon. As far as buying meds in port, I have never gone there so I can’t say one way or the other. My prayers go out to you," shared Judy Bernard Hitchcock.

Other posters, however, did offer their experiences buying prescription medicine over the counter in various ports.

"I have purchased meds from the pharmacy she’s referring to. I haven’t had a problem. Prescription-free zone is the reason. It seems expensive these days," Steph Steph shared.

It is not uncommon for Americans to go to Mexico or Canada to buy prescription drugs in an effort to save money.

Andrea Hazelwood, who identified herself as a registered nurse, did share a bit of a warning. She noted that Furosemide was an older drug that's already cheap in the US.

"I would be less concerned with the quality of meds at a foreign pharmacy and more concerned that this person is going to cause themselves kidney and/or cardiac issues taking a med their doctor didn’t prescribe them. In general, I’m actually not opposed to buying meds at a foreign pharmacy to get past the outrageous prescription prices in the US as long as it’s a drug a person’s doctor has already prescribed for them," she wrote.

Bimini residents are ‘not worried’ over cancelled Carnival cruise ship

DESPITE a cruise line removing Bimini from some of its scheduled visits, residents are not expressing great concern at the move.

The Carnival Spirit will no longer visit as part of its eight-night itinerary, according to Cruise Industry News, although it will still be a part of the ship’s six-night cruises.

West Grand Bahama and Bimini MP Kingsley Smith said officials are still awaiting a reason for the move but said that Bimini’s economy is “robust”.

He said: “They have more than one cruise line coming to Bimini – Virgin, Celebrity X, Carnival, different ships, etc. So in the immediate, presently, we don’t see anything that would affect Bimini’s economy in the immediate future, but long term we still waiting on response from them as to why.”

According to the Cruise Industry News report, ten sailings removed the Bimini visit next year, including those set to depart on November 8 and 22, December 6, 20 and 28, and sailings in 2026 on January 31, February 14 and 28, and March 14 and 28. The eight-night sailings would include stops in Nassau, Celebration Key and Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays, setting sail from Mobile, Alabama.

Valon Rahming is president of Bimini Vista, the only Bahamian, owned and operated air tram tours that brings tourists in the community.

She said the move has not affected the business at all.

She said: “They’ve put on another vessel that’ll pick up the slack. So the same thing with Virgin. Virgin had one. They now have two. They stopped one again, and the other one just picked up the slack.”

She said that people were not panicking about it “not if they get not if they understand what’s going on”.

Glenrick Rolle, of Bimini Blue Water Taxi, a ferry service between north and south Bimini, said while the removal might affect the island, Bimini people are resilient and this is nothing new to them.

He said: “Bimini survived before the cruise ships and Bimini will survive after the cruise ships. So this is a blessed island, so we’re the closest Island to the United States. A gentleman can wake up in the morning and say, ‘Honey, let’s go to Bimini for breakfast’.

“So I’m not worried about Carnival. If Carnival wants to pull out, that’s Carnival. But I’m saying Bimini is a destination that people come from all over the world. I mean, we survived before them, and we’ll survive after them.”

Another business owner who sells items such as bags, bracelets, and T-shirts said she does not think it is a big deal at all. “Before that was coming to Bimini, it never affected us,” she said.

The cruise company will automatically refund the shore excursions for the cancelled ports of call to the original form of payment.

Attempts to contact Carnival Cruise Line for comment were unsuccessful by the time of going to press.

Here Are all the Cruise Lines That Have Canceled Russia Sailings

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition, canceling seven itineraries

Astrid was the Senior Special Projects Editor at TripSavvy.

carnival cruise company news

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, cruise line after cruise line has altered itineraries with stops in Russian ports or canceled voyages entirely.

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition to this list after a March 17 statement announcing that seven polar voyages are canceled for the summer. An additional four Arctic sailings have new itineraries. "The terrible situation in Ukraine makes planned operations in Russian waters untenable, and we cannot support promoting these trips in any way for the 2022 season," said Angelica Vorea, founder and CEO of parent company Poseidon Arctic Voyages, Ltd.

Carnival Cruise Line, Windstar, and Atlas Ocean Voyages were some of the first big names to announce that they scrapped all stops in St. Petersburg. Carnival announced via Twitter they will be swapping Russia out of all current cruise itineraries in the coming week "once alternative ports can be confirmed." In the same post, the cruise line's holding company, Carnival Corporation, stood by Ukraine in light of the attacks, declaring, "We stand for peace."

Royal Caribbean Group released a statement canceling stops in St. Petersburg for summer 2022 sailings for all its brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silver Sea. "We have planned alternative ports and will communicate itinerary changes in the next few days to our guests and travel partners. Guests can feel comfortable knowing they are able to reschedule their cruise with our Cruise with Confidence program," the statement read.

MSC Cruises, which had four ships scheduled to call in St. Petersburg beginning this May, announced it had suspended all Russian stops and was in negotiations for possible alternative options, including Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tallinn.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings also announced that they would remove Russian and Ukrainian ports from 2022 itineraries across their brands, including Norwegian, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas.

"It's disappointing because St. Petersburg is one of the crown jewels of the Scandinavian itineraries," said Frank Del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, during the company's earnings call last Thursday.

Regent Seven Seas had particularly significant plans for Russia this year, with several stacked itineraries, including the Solovetsky Islands, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, St. Petersburg, and Odessa, Ukraine. Norwegian Cruise Line canceled a majority of its Baltic sailings on the Norwegian Getaway. Some cruise lines are forgoing modification and canceling their itineraries outright. The luxury river cruise line, Scenic, scrapped all of its 2022 Russia cruises. Viking River Cruises canceled all Russian river cruises and its planned Kyiv, Black Sea & Bucharest routes this year due to the events. Russian stops on Viking's ocean itineraries will be modified, and impacted guests and travel advisors will be notified.

The cancellations add to the ripple effect Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused throughout the travel industry. Earlier in March, travel expert and television personality Rick Steves announced he would be canceling all Russian tours that his company, Rick Steves' Europe, had planned this year.

"Our mission ... is to help Americans better know and understand our neighbors through travel," Steves wrote in a blog post from late February. "But when we bring travelers to another country, we also bring their dollars—dollars that would support Putin's aggression. Therefore, as of today, we have canceled all 2022 tours that include a stop in Russia."

Cruise Lines Alter Russia Stops, Seek New Destinations

  • February 25, 2022

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine increases, multiple cruise lines have announced that they have either completely canceled calls in those countries for the remainder of 2022, or are preemptively making alternative plans should they need to cancel port visits there.

Here are lines that have announced their plans concerning itineraries in Russia and Ukraine.

This article was updated on March 4 at 9:40 am.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has canceled all remaining port calls to Russia and Ukraine for its three cruise brands — Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Oceania and Norwegian Cruise Line’s first 2022 calls to Saint Petersburg, Russia were both scheduled for May.

In a note to travel advisors, Norwegian Cruise Line said that its team is “working to confirm replacement ports and will advise all impacted guests and travel advisors as soon as possible.”

In total, about 50 sailings between Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises were scheduled to call in Saint Petersburg this summer.

Carnival Corporation

Carnival Corporation has announced that its cruise line brands will be dropping calls to Saint Petersburg for the foreseeable future.

The cruise operator posted on Twitter Saturday afternoon, “In light of the recent attacks by Russia in Ukraine, Carnival Corporation brands will be modifying our itineraries in the coming week once alternative ports can be confirmed. We stand for peace.”

On Thursday, March 3, Princess Cruises announced that it is coming up with replacement ports for 24 cruises that were previously scheduled to call in Saint Petersburg. Replacement destinations will vary by itinerary, but include ports such as Stockholm, Sweden (overnight call); Visby, Sweden; and Gdansk (Gdynia), Poland.

On Friday, March 4, Holland America confirmed that it is modifying six itineraries originally scheduled to visit Russia.

The five cruises that would have visited Saint Petersburg will instead visit Riga, Latvia; Klaipeda, Lithuania; or Visby, Sweden; and also add an overnight in Stockholm, Sweden. The sailing that was scheduled to visit Vladivostok, Russia will instead visit Busan (Pusan), South Korea.

Royal Caribbean Group

Royal Caribbean Group will not be calling in Saint Petersburg, Russia this summer. The brand, which includes Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises, said in a statement that it has “planned alternative ports and will communicate itinerary changes to our guests and travel partners.”

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises has announced that it has suspended all port calls to Saint Petersburg, Russia from the end of May to October. The change affects four ships that are scheduled to sail in the Baltic region this summer: MSC Preziosa, Grandiosa, Poesia, and Virtuosa.

The line is currently making arrangements for alternative ports, with potential replacements including Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tallinn.

Travel agents and guests who are affected by the changes will be notified as soon as new itineraries are in place.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages has adjusted two late-summer 2022 Baltic itineraries due to the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

On the Hamburg to Kiel itinerary, departing August 26, as well as the Kiel roundtrip itinerary departing September 7,  World Navigator  will drop Saint Petersburg, Russia as a port stop. Instead, the ship will call at Kotka and Mariehamn, Finland.

The August 26 cruise includes a transit of the Kiel Canal, while the September 7 departure will also add Saaremaa, Estonia where the ship will dock in the city center.

Viking River Cruises

Viking has canceled all 2022 Kyiv, Black Sea, and Bucharest river cruise itineraries.

The line is currently evaluating all itineraries that call in Russia this year and is making plans to modify them.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises has canceled all voyages and cruise tours in the Black Sea region, and will be changing its Baltic itineraries to replace calls in Saint Petersburg, Russia with another non-Russian port.

The line’s Black Sea Sights & Turkish Delights itinerary was scheduled for two dates this year, and both will be modified for 2022 with a new roundtrip Istanbul itinerary to Greece and Turkey.

Sea Cloud Cruises

Sea Cloud Cruises has canceled all scheduled calls to Saint Petersburg, Russia this year.

The line’s new three-master, full-rigged ship Sea Cloud Spirit  was scheduled to visit the city four times this summer during its first Baltic Sea season.

Sea Cloud Cruises is currently in the process of developing a new itinerary for affected voyages this June and July. Guests who are booked on those sailings have already been notified of the decision.

While featured on all Princess voyages, it provides even greater flexibility on longer journeys, allowing guests to explore remote corners of the globe without fear of missing out, along with iconic ports, and historic landmarks on curated voyages from Princess, including World Cruises , Journeys Far & Away , Immersive Itineraries , and Ocean Crossings .

“Today’s travelers are increasingly drawn to longer, more immersive experiences, often in remote or bucket-list destinations, without wanting to disconnect from their digital lives,” said Terry Thornton, Chief Commercial Officer of Princess Cruises. “MedallionNet Max ensures that connectivity is never an issue, and when combined with the Princess Premier package, which offers unlimited beverages and specialty dining, it makes longer voyages not only feasible but incredibly rewarding.”

Created by the destination experts at Princess Cruises to point consumers to the unique itineraries within various destinations, Epic Voyages include four categories, offering flexibility and something for everyone:

World Cruises – 35,000 Nautical Miles into the World’s Wonders

For travelers who want to see the world in a whole new way – without the hassle of airport travel, constant unpacking and expensive meals – Princess is the perfect escort to cruise through the immensity of the planet, full of hidden treasures and adventure, making it accessible, tangible, less overwhelming and convenient. Plus, the camaraderie among guests with shared experiences in fascinating ports and a warm crew that gets to know their every need make this the ultimate epic voyage that every adventurer should embark on in their lifetime.

World Cruises sail through the Panama Canal, Hawaii & the South Pacific, Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Australia and Southeast Asia and even Africa.

Three ships – Crown Princess, Coral Princess and Island Princess – sail on World Cruises up to 116 days or divided into shorter segments. In total, 26 itineraries highlight the wonders of the world. World Cruises depart from Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Auckland, Brisbane or Sydney.

Journeys Far & Away – Multiple Epic Destinations

Journeys Far & Away are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts seeking an “off-the-grid” experience, wildlife lovers, adventurers and naturalists. Whether it’s experiencing the ultimate remote continent where 1,200 miles of dramatic landscapes appear in Antarctica, visiting Greenland - the world’s largest island full of scenic stunners, or discovering hidden gems like “Mystery Island” and Sopo’aga Falls in the South Pacific, guests enjoy multiple destinations on one voyage.

With itineraries ranging in length from 11 to 33 days, sailing on seven ships – Coral Princess, Discovery Princess, Emerald Princess, Grand Princess, Island Princess, Majestic Princess and Sapphire Princess – cruises sail to Southeast Asia, South America and Antarctica, South Pacific & Hawaii, Greenland and Canada.

Journeys Far & Away sail from Boston, Los Angeles, New York City and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Immersive Itineraries – Destinations in One Region

For the culturally curious, or those travelers inspired by history, these carefully crafted Immersive Itineraries are a go-to for an immersive and authentic experiential voyage. From the midnight sun in the Arctic Circle to the ancient landmarks and ruins in Rome, Marseille and Athens, to mesmerizing temples and shrines in Japan or the crystalline waters of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, these cruises feature multiple destinations in one region.

With itineraries from 17 to 31 days, cruises take guests to Alaska, Australia, Japan, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. The cruise line’s newest Sphere-Class ships – Sun Princess and Star Princess – both offer immersive itineraries through the Mediterranean. With 11 ships total, Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Diamond Princess, Emerald Princess, Grand Princess, Island Princess, Majestic Princess, Ruby Princess and Sky Princess also sail to these transformative regions.

Immersive Itineraries sail roundtrip from Adelaide, Athens, Barcelona, Brisbane, Fremantle (Perth), Melbourne, Rome (Civitavecchia), Seattle, San Francisco, Southampton (London), Sydney and Tokyo (Yokohama).

Ocean Crossings – Sailing the Oceans Blue from One Continent to Another

Like a true seafarer, Ocean Crossings weave the continents of the world together, calling to some of the most revered sites and cities, diverse cultures, cuisines and exotic destinations. Onboard, Princess guests enjoy a host of modern luxuries, personal and attentive service, award-winning cuisine, worldclass entertainment, amenities and more.

With Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific crossings, these voyages are the perfect prologue to a renowned Princess World Cruise and offer the perfect mix of sea days, a chance to see the awe-inspiring Northern Lights, and far-reaching destinations like Casablanca, Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Antigua.

With 26 itineraries, ranging in length from 13 to 24 days and nine ships – Caribbean Princess, Emerald Princess, Island Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Sky Princess, Star Princess and Sun Princess – guests cross hemispheres and travel through time east to west, and vice versa.

The new Star Princess, debuting in fall 2025, sails in October on a not-to-be-missed Iberian Passage crossing from Southampton to Ft. Lauderdale, offering ample time to explore and enjoy everything this exceptional vessel has to offer.

Ocean Crossings offer convenient domestic departures from Ft. Lauderdale, Honolulu, New York and Vancouver, BC. International departure ports include Barcelona, Southampton, Athens, Copenhagen and Rome.

Epic Voyages have been designed for the beautiful ships of Princess to be the stage for guests to look out and experience the great wonders of the world.
