All over the park, there are photo stations where you simply scan your wristband, and then after a couple of seconds, the camera will flash, letting you know the picture was taken. The best part is you really only need one photo pass per 10 people. However, if you plan on being in separate areas of the park at times, it may be wise to purchase multiple photo passes per group.

Excursions are generally very safe in Cancun, as well as in the neighboring towns such as Chichen Itza, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos, Tulum, and the list goes on. In fact, safety is the number one concern for the staff in charge of your excursion.

For example, if you’re riding ATVs, you will be given a helmet to wear and be required to keep a distance between other riders, or if you’re zip-lining, you will have to wear safety gloves and a helmet. Specific instructions will be given to you before any activity to ensure you are doing everything in the safest manner. This is an early morning excursion to Chichen Itza, which is an ancient Mayan site.

Choosing the ideal excursion for your Cancun getaway is child’s play.

Consider the pros and cons of each activity, and then think of your preferences, such as your budget.

• Educational Value: This is used to evaluate the educational value of every tour. Is it enriching and educational? Are there fun and engaging learning activities for kids? Are there opportunities to experience and learn about the area’s history, culture, and traditions? I consider these factors when rating educational value.  
• Fun Factor: I use this criterion to evaluate the fun factor of the excursion. Did the previous participants enjoy this excursion? Does it feature thrilling and exciting activities or locations? Are there opportunities to participate in one-of-a-kind experiences? I ask myself these questions when assessing the fun factor. 
• Convenience: I use this to assess the convenience of each option. Do they provide complimentary shuttle services? Is it easily accessible by public transportation? Are the tour schedules flexible? These are the factors I consider when rating this criterion.

The usual cliché about vacationers in these sunny and warm resorts is that the guests stay in a walled-off all-inclusive complex the whole time, then turn around and fly back home. It’s very easy to get out and about though for a range of fun Cancun excursions.

Here are eight Cancun excursion options for when you’ve had enough of walking the beach and drinking cocktails by the pool.

Chichen Itza Archaeological Site

Properly spelled as Chichén Itzá and pronounced with accents on the second syllable, this iconic site is one of the wonders of the world. It’s also the most famous and most-visited Mayan site. There’s plenty to see on a tour here that will give insight into the Maya culture, but of course the dominating structure is the giant pyramid in the middle of the lawn.

This excursion takes the whole day and it’s going to be crowded no matter what if you’re coming from Cancun. (If you have more time, spend a few nights in Valladolid instead so you can beat the crowds or come for the nighttime light show. Then you can also visit other ruins and cenotes.

If you do come from Cancun, it’s a few hours there and back, so bring something to read, extra water, and sunscreen for when you’re on site: there’s not much shade.

Tulum Archaeological Site

If you don’t have the time or energy to head a few hours inland, Tulum is a much more accessible site in the Riviera Maya. The main temple here sits on top a cliff overlooking the sea, so while the structures here aren’t all that impressive, the dramatic setting and beach below make up for it.

It’s a straight shot there from the Riviera Maya resorts, and relatively quick if you’re coming from the ones south of Playa del Carmen, including the luxury Tulum resorts on the beach or the town of the same name.

The Amazing Caverns of Rio Secreto

From the top it looks like nothing, but once you venture underground at Rio Secreto, you enter a cenote complex that’s filled with cavern stalagmites and stalactites. Your guide takes you wading through the shallow pools, at one point turning the lights off so you can experience true underground darkness.

When the lights are on though, it’s a beautiful sight created by nature over hundreds of thousands of years. Check ticket prices for your dates here .

The Underground Rivers of Xcaret

The Xcaret Park is one of the most popular destinations in the Cancun and Riviera Maya region, with plenty of activities to keep the family occupied all day. Then at night they put on a spectacular show in their large arena.

One of the most memorable experiences here is swimming in an underground river, part of the cenote system that runs underneath most of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cenotes Tour Cancun Excursions

For a more complete Cenote experience, book a Tulum tour with cenotes visits and combine two different cenotes in one day with the closest set of ruins. You can just float around and swim, or try something more adventurous. Some tours like this offer the chance to rappel down, dive in, or go snorkeling.

If you really want to hit a lot of cenotes in one day though, the best bet is to head inland to Valladolid where there are dozens of them around that are open to the public.

Snorkeling Tour

There’s not a lot of snorkeling around Cancun itself, but there are plenty of options when you connect with the reef at Cozumel, Akumal, Puerto Morelos, or near the ruins of Tulum on Cancun excursions.

For a more turn-key experience though, you can book a trip to Xel-Ha, open 365 days a year. The pond and river system there is connected to the Caribbean but offers calm water for unlimited snorkeling. There are changing rooms and lockers on site, a full bar, and restaurant. If you’ve got your own rental car, there’s ample free parking.

The Ruins of Coba in the Jungle

The Mayan ruins site of Cobá is not nearly as busy as Chichen Itza and you’ll feel like more of an explorer there since it is still surrounded by wild jungle instead of sitting on manicured lawns next to a hotel. You won’t see 20 tour buses stacked up and you won’t get mobbed by vendors either.

This site is inland from Tulum, so it’s easier to reach from there or the southern Riviera Maya resorts, but you can still easily get there and back on a day trip from Cancun. Don’t forget the bug spray though, especially in the rainy season.

Mind Tricks and Fun at Xenses

One of the strangest-theme parks in the Riviera Maya is Xenses, a place that may just blow your mind. This man-made park has activities that will stimulate all your senses like the Xensatorium, the Bird Flight, and a huge slip slide, but then things start getting weird. There’s a mud river, a salt river for floating, a “Way of Dwarfs and Giants,” and tilting optical illusion structures to mess with your assumptions.

Ziplines Tour

If just one short zipline is not enough, you can go all in at Xplor Park, where there are two circuits of zip-lines to ride. When you’ve had enough of that, you can ride amphibious vehicles through the jungle  and cool off at an underground river with stalactites and stalagmites. This Park includes an unlimited buffet and beverages when you need to recharge.

Making plans now to come to Cancun? You can book any of these Cancun excursions in advance, which usually gets you a sizable discount compared to doing it on site. Or if you have a driver, he can usually set up reservations and tickets for any of these activities in advance. Things to do in Cancun: Family Excursions Worth Booking

A re you looking for kid-friendly tours from Cancun to liven up your resort stay? Keep reading to checking out these cool Cancun family excursions, most of which we’ve done and loved!

These are some of the best things to do in Cancun with kids apart from lounging on the beach. Even if you’re staying at a mega resort, you’ll know you’re actually in Mexico when you take part in one of these unique experiences.

While most of these are full-day tours from Cancun, I’ve also included a few Cancun half-day tours in case you’re looking for a shorter Cancun excursion. There are also plenty of real world tips based on our own experiences having done these Cancun tours with kids!

XCARET Park

XCARET Park is a combination cultural experience and eco-park located just south of Playa del Carmen. You’ll swim in an underground river, encounter animals native to the Yucatán Peninsula, explore Mayan ruins, enjoy cultural shows and visit a recreated village. It’s an action-packed full-day Cancun excursion that’s best for families with kids at least 4 years old, though guests of all ages are welcome. We have lots of XCARET Park tips to help you make the most of your day!

Your family can spend a full day exploring XCARET Park. It starts with driving yourself to the park, taking the ADO bus service or being picked up by the dedicated XCARET transportation service at your Cancun hotel first thing in the morning. Be warned that the XCARET bus is convenient because it can be purchased directly with your ticket, but you may wind up spending 2-2.5 hours on the bus depending on when your hotel’s pickup occurs. You can choose if you prefer to return to Cancun in the late afternoon (before the evening show) or at night after the show has ended.

Groupo Xcaret operates several other parks in the area with different themes. I really hope to visit water-focused Xel-Há and multi-sensory Xenses in future trips! Adventurers will love Xplor Park . These are some of the best Cancun activities for families looking to have a fun day out while still appreciating some of the wonders of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Be sure to look out for deals and special discounts on XCARET Park tickets. Typically kids are half price but sometimes there are additional offers on this page . You definitely want to buy them online in advance if possible, as they’re much less than purchasing at the gate.

Puerto Morelos snorkeling tour

The best snorkeling near Cancun is on the Mesoamerican Reef, accessible from nearby Puerto Morelos. This cute little beach town would be a great budget-friendly place to stay away from the massive resorts of Cancun if you’re looking for a more laid back experience and want to enjoy a variety of restaurants.

This family-friendly Cancun snorkeling tour is run by an extremely reputable dive shop in town. We took this tour at the end of December, and had a great experience from start to finish. The office staff was easy to coordinate with in advance and the captains and guides did a great job making everyone in our large group comfortable, while also showing us fantastic creatures like a hidden lobster!

Because this snorkeling tour near Cancun is in a protected bay, the waters are generally calm. There’s abundant marine life to see and even preschoolers are welcome!

I love that this tour is so small, with a maximum of 10 passengers on the boat. We have been on a similar sized boat elsewhere in Mexico that loaded at least 15 of us on the same size boat and it was so unpleasant. With a fairly small group, there’s plenty of space for everyone and kids who are new to snorkeling can get the attention they need to feel comfortable in the water.

Everything you need is included, down to the wet suits if you want them. Be sure to observe the stated arrival time, as it takes a few minutes to get everyone the right gear. As with many snorkeling tours in Mexico, guests are requested not to use sunscreen. You may want to wear a rash guard to prevent sunburn if you choose not to use a wet suit, but they had wetsuits even for my little 4 year old nephew.

After you book your tour, be sure to let them know if you’ll be bringing very young kids so that they can source child-sized snorkel set if need be. That said, we prefer to bring our own snorkel gear for kids to ensure that it fits them properly.

This tour does not include transportation, but it’s also an extremely budget-friendly tour from Cancun. If you have a small family or group, you can take a taxi to Puerto Morelos – expect to pay about $1 per minute – or even better rent a car to explore the region on your own.

Cancun snorkeling tour

If you don’t want to mess with transportation and want to experience a wide variety of of snorkeling sites near Cancun, this 5-in-1 Cancun snorkeling tour is for you! It covers reef, the MUSA underwater sculpture garden, a shipwreck, a cenote and more. This company is also very experienced working with kids, though the minimum age is 6 years old.

Including transportation and orientation, this Cancun excursion is around 3.5 hours. Like the Puerto Morelos snorkeling tour above, it’s limited to 10 people. That’s great for ensuring a wonderful experience, especially if this is your first time taking the kids snorkeling.

This tour takes place around Costa Mujeres, north of Cancun. Since it’s more of a channel rather than a bay, conditions may not be quite as calm as Puerto Morelos on some days. The dock is also very close to the Mayan ruins of El Meko, but you’ll have to arrange your own transportation (or drive yourself) if you want to swing by and see them before or after your tour.

Still, for those who are open to a fast-paced snorkeling tour and want to experience a wide variety of sites this Cancun excursion for families is a great choice! While we didn’t end up booking it for our large group (in part because of the age minimum) I seriously considered taking this tour on my own and I’ll try to catch it next time.

Cancun submarine tour

Do you want your kids to experience an amazing reef but you aren’t convinced that snorkeling is a good fit? Don’t miss the Cancun submarine tour ! It’s one of the best Cancun family activities for younger kids.

This fun, family-friendly tour in the Cancun hotel zone takes you out to the reef in a shuttle boat through the mangroves and then allows you to board a semi-submersible right at the reef! You’ll see tons of sea life and also a part of the famous MUSA underwater sculpture garden that acts as an artificial seed for new coral reef to develop. We saw plenty of fish and sea turtles during our tour.

This is an excellent Cancun tour for toddlers, as it’s fairly short, involves very little drive time, is relatively affordable and will keep their interests. For many of the kids in our group, the submarine was their favorite tour we did on our recent trip.

Even better? This is actually a free Cancun tour for kids under 4, while older children pay a reduced rate of $24 and adults pay $47.

We did have two people who felt seasick during the Cancun submarine ride, which wasn’t unexpected (one of them gets extreme motion sickness). Since this is a semi -submersible rather than a true submarine, they were able to go up to the deck for fresh air and a view of the horizon when they needed to while the rest of us stayed below. I recommend taking Bonine and/or wearing SeaBands if you’re prone to sea sickness.

This family tour in the Cancun hotel zone does not include transportation. However, if you’re staying at Marriott Cancun , Paradisus Cancun or Fiesta Americana Condesa you can actually walk there. Most other locations in the hotel zone are just a quick, affordable taxi ride away (budget about $1 per minute and be sure to read up on car seats in Mexico beforehand).

Visit cenotes near Cancun

It’s not a trip to the Yucatán Peninsula without swimming in a cenote! Cenotes are large sinkholes (or even caves) filled with fresh water and there are thousands in the region. They’re all different in terms of what features they offer and how accessible they are for different ages and abilities.

Cancun cenote tours are often combined with visits to other sites in the region like Mayan ruins, but if you only want to swim in cenotes and your kids are at least 6 years old then don’t miss this excellent tour . You’ll experience four different cenotes through a combination of swimming, kayaking, ziplines, rappelling and more. I know several people who have taken it and everyone has great feedback. The group size is manageable and you don’t have to worry about transportation!

If you have a car or prefer to manage your own transportation, the options are endless. On our most recent trip we visited Cenote Boca de Puma (pictured above) and our family had the whole place to ourselves late in the day. Even my 4 year old nephew had a great time jumping in from the swing (set up like a seated zip line) while his dad jumped in off the platform on the deeper side. The cost was around $10 per adult and $5 per child including life jackets and the location near Puerto Morelos was ideal for combining with the snorkeling tour we did.

With more time, head further south to the well-known family-friendly Cenote Azul. It’s very open and shallow and there’s plenty of space to explore, though it does get busy since it’s so lovely.

Day trip to Isla Mujeres from Cancun

On our first trip to the Yucatán Peninsula we took the ferry to Isla Mujeres, but if you’d rather not move your stuff it’s easy to book a kid-friendly tour from Cancun to Isla Mujeres – or book the 20 minute ferry and DIY it.

There are plenty of kid-friendly things to do on Isla Mujeres for the day. To begin with, even very close to the ferry terminal you’ll find stunning beaches. Because the beach faces Costa Mujeres rather than open water, it’s one of the best beaches near Cancun for avoiding seaweed (the dreaded sargasso ) and the water is warm and placid. Head just a few minutes’ walk north to Playa Norte for some nice easy snorkeling. You can also walk around town for some good food and an unlimited number of souvenir shops.

While I don’t recommend the specific company we used for our last-minute booking, you can also take a snorkeling tour on Isla Mujeres. Just know that the water can be rougher at some of the snorkel spots than the Puerto Morelos snorkeling tour. My husband and kids are plenty experienced in the water but didn’t enjoy snorkeling the rough waters around MUSA.

Even better if you’re visiting Isla Mujeres with kids, you can enjoy a clear boat tour ! Much like the Cancun submarine tour, this allows visitors of all ages to experience the magic of the reef without getting in the water.

If you prefer to keep your logistics simple, you can book a family-friendly Isla Mujeres tour that picks up at your Cancun hotel and takes you across to the island for snorkeling, shopping and more. Be sure to avoid the “party boats” that offer unlimited alcohol and not much else! You might even want to book this very reasonable private sailing for up to 8 people to customize your experience.

As a side note, many people (including us!) choose to stay a few nights on Isla Mujeres. It’s a lovely option. Our hotel choices were limited by a late change in our itinerary, but we had initially booked Ixchel Beach Hotel based on strong recommendations from other families. We walked by and understand their love for both the property and its amazing location!

Museo Maya de Cancun (or El Rey)

There are thousands of places to see Mayan ruins in the Yucatán Peninsula , but the most famous ones are far and may be too long of a day if you’re visiting Cancun with kids.

If you’re looking for a taste of Mayan ruins that’s much more kid-friendly, head to Museo Maya de Cancun . This fairly new museum has a great collection of Mayan artifacts inside, but outside is the main attraction for many visitors.

When you walk out the Museum’s back door, you’ll find yourself transported to an ancient Mayan village. This is San Miguelito, and yes they are Mayan ruins in Cancun’s hotel zone! The ruins aren’t as impressive as larger sites deep in the Yucatán, but they’re a good representation and a much easier place to see Mayan ruins with kids.

Admission here is just $9 and you can see the museum and ruins in about 90 minutes. It’s just down the road from the Cancun subsee tour, so I suggest combining them. Be sure to bring some of these to use when exploring the ruins. As with the submarine above, you can actually walk to Museo Maya from Paradisus Cancun or Fiesta Americana Condesa .

The only downside is that the Mayan Museum of Cancun is closed on Mondays. In our case that foiled our plan to visit! We went instead to the ruins at neighboring El Rey, which are not quite as impressive but have fewer mosquitos and are open daily. San Miguelito and El Rey were once part of the same community and connected by a footpath, though you can’t walk directly between them today.

For our family ranging from 16 months to 75 years, a 45 minute stop at El Rey was a great fit on our way to the submarine. There are several structures with signs in both English and Spanish, and it’s enough to give first-time visitors a taste of ancient Mayan cities.

El Rey is open daily 8am to 4:30pm and admission is 65 pesos per adult. Based on my middling Spanish reading abilities, foreign kids pay that rate as well; however, the attendant taking our payment said we didn’t need to pay for them. YMMV on that!

One thing to keep in mind is that the walkway here is all grass and it can be somewhat uneven and soggy. If you’re bringing a baby, you’ll have a better experience using a carrier than a compact stroller. Visitors who aren’t sure-footed may benefit from a steady arm to hold.

Mayan ruins tour

There are tons of options to see Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula . If you’re planning to visit with kids on a day trip from Cancun (or Riviera Maya), the most important things to consider are drive times and the age minimum of any specific tour you’re considering. Why? The drive from Cancun to Chichén Itza or Ek Balam is nearly three hours each way , and many tour include pickups at multiple hotels before they head to the interior of the Peninsula.

That said, if you’re visiting Cancun with teens or older children you may not be put off by the distance! Due to the Southwest Airlines meltdown of 2022 we missed our Ek Balam tour , but fortunately other family members were able to go and had a great experience. It was a very long day – pick up was at 7:15am and they were dropped off at 6pm.

For my teenage niece and nephew, it was an unforgettable day. They had an excellent guide to show them around some of the most impressive Mayan ruins in the region, rappelled into a massive cenote and ate delicious traditional Mayan food.

The tour that we booked has a minimum age of 6, but the teens felt that it would be better for slightly older kids given the length of the day. It’s a fairly small group capped at 15 people (in our absence the Ek Balam tour was under 10, though I suspect most Chichen Itza tours are full), but you still have to be confident that your kiddo will be able to participate in all of the activities without disrupting the experience for other guests.

Should you book a tour to Chichen Itza or a tour to Ek Balam ? We initially chose Ek Balam because our family had visited Chichen Itza the previous year – Chichen Itza is surely the more iconic of the two. But Ek Balam also has the benefits of being slightly closer and not nearly as busy. Both tours visit the same cenote and Mayan cultural activities, but the tour at Ek Balam has the opportunity to climb the pyramid and see architectural details up close.

If your kids have the stamina for a long day, you’ll have a great time with either one.

One option to consider if you think a group tour might not be the right fit for your family is a private tour to Chichen Itza . Though it’s more expensive, there are some very good reasons to consider it.

First and foremost, your family is the only one that needs to be picked up so you won’t have to deal with frustrating extra time picking up or dropping off at other hotels. You will experience much the same activities but in a 9 hour Cancun excursion with kids instead of a 12 hour day trip from Cancun.

Second, because you’re avoiding extra pick ups in the morning you’ll arrive at both Chichen Itza and the cenote before the big crowds on 40 person buses roll in. You’ll enjoy it more with a hundred of your closest friends instead of a thousand.

Finally, you don’t have to stress about your kids melting down or bugging other travelers. Since it’s a private tour, you can slow down when you need to or speed up when you need to. Having that flexibility is so important on a long day.

Rio Secreto tour

On the spur of the moment, the four of us booked a Rio Secreto tour that wound up being one of our favorite things to do in Riviera Maya! Rio Secreto is an underground cave system with a series of rivers running through it. The ceiling is fossilized coral from the period when the entire Peninsula was actually part of the sea, and you’re surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites as you walk and swim your way around. This is a one-of-a-kind experience near Cancun for adventurous families, especially those visiting visiting Cancun with teens and tweens. The price of the tour varies depending on whether you drive yourself, need pickup near Playa del Carmen or need pickup in Cancun. We requested pickup at our Cancun resort so we paid $119 per adult and $60 per child. Thankfully that price includes all gear – from headlamps to towels – plus a filling traditional lunch. We just needed our swimsuits to wear under the provided wetsuits and dry clothing to put on afterward – bring one of these to store your dry clothes in the locker during your tour and then consolidate your wet stuff afterward.

I recommend budgeting the extra $100 to purchase the photo package – you can’t take pictures in the cave and I wouldn’t have wanted to try given the technical nature of the activity and challenging lighting. But you’ll definitely want the photos to remember your experience and share with friends! Note: Some photos were taken with an external flash and I brightened them up in my editing software, but in reality it’s much darker than this in the cave.

Note that the minimum age for Rio Secreto is 4 years old, but I can’t see that being practical. Our kids did fairly well at 8 and 11 but still needed some physical assistance at times and occasionally got a little spooked – the water feels chilly at first, the only light is from your headlamps and there are even bats flying around in some places if you’re lucky enough to see them. Most 8 year olds should have a good time, and thrill-seekers as young as 6 will be ok as well. Having one parent for each kid at those ages was very helpful, and it would have been tricky if we’d had another young child with us.

Visitors of all ages need to be sure-footed and comfortable with some technical challenges, though strength isn’t important and you don’t really need any swimming ability. There are times when you’re walking down a small, rocky slope while simultaneously ducking and turning. For average visitors wearing the provided water shoes, it’s very manageable. The tour participant with us who came with a broken toe had a very hard time!

On balance, after reflecting for a few days my kids declared that they loved this Cancun family excursion and would recommend it to friends.

While most people visit Mexico for its big tourist centers like Tulum , Cabo, Cancun , or Cozumel, there’s a lot more to the country than just its luxurious resorts.

Now, I’ll be honest: I was late to visiting Mexico.

But when I did, I fell in love with it. Mexico is an incredible destination with a rich history, amazing food, and friendly people.

It’s an awesome country to backpack around, drive through, or just vacation in. There’s a ton of stuff to do here, and the locals are some of the friendliest people on the planet.

From Mayan ruins to pristine beaches to Mexico City’s art and food and Oaxaca’s mezcal scene, Mexico has it all.

And the food? World-class. Gorge yourself on delicious tacos, tostadas, tamales, sopas, seafood, and mole (to name a few items from Mexico’s very long list of traditional dishes).

I could go on forever as to why I love this country. Whatever amount of time you’re planning to visit is not enough — you’ll always leave wanting more.

1. Explore Oaxaca

Located in a valley surrounded by craggy mountains in southwestern Mexico, Oaxaca and its surrounds have been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec peoples. A city of colorful buildings, scenic rooftop restaurants and bars, street art, historic Spanish colonial churches, cobblestone streets, and many parks, it’s a center for heritage tourism. It’s also one of the gastronomic hotbeds of Mexico as well as the hub of mezcal production too. With fascinating museums, bustling markets, historic buildings, delicious food and much more, there really is something for everyone in Oaxaca . I loved my time there ! You must visit!

2. Tour Mexico City

Found in the Valley of Mexico at an altitude of around 2,225 meters (7,300 feet), Mexico City is a sprawling, chaotic, messy city in the best way possible. Originally built over a lake, it has some 150 world-class museums, sprawling markets, tons of historic buildings, city squares, and more. In the historic center, you can visit the impressive main square (the only one bigger in the world is Red Square in Moscow). To the south of the city there’s a network of beautiful canals, and Teotihuacan, the City of the Gods, is just a 45-minute drive away. The city also has an incredible foodie scene and is fast becoming one of the centers of gastronomy in the world.

3. Relax on the Pacific Coast

Vacation spots like Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and Sayulita on Mexico’s Pacific Coast offer just as many epic beaches and resort properties as the Caribbean Coast. Go to Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos to hang out on the pristine white sandy beaches, or head to Sayulita to check out the busy surf scene. Surf and enjoy watersports, visit historical monuments, and check out all the local art by day. By night, you can indulge in sunset cocktails, enjoy fresh shrimp tacos or seafood skewers, and salsa the evening away.

4. See the Mayan Ruins

Mexico is filled with ruins. You have Chichén Itzá, which dates back to 550 CE and is one of the largest (and most popular) Mayan sites in Mexico for its enormous Kukulkan Pyramid (which is considered one of the new Wonders of the World). Other ruins worth visiting are the Tulum Archaeological Zone, the Palenque Archaeological Zone, the Calakmul ruins (which are inside the huge Calakmul Biosphere Reserve), the ruins at Ek Balam, and so many more! Admission is 571 MXN for the Wonder of the World Chichén Itzá while the rest cost anywhere from 80-500 MXN.

5. Visit a volcano

Chapultepec is one of the largest city parks in the world, spanning over 1,700 acres. It encompasses the Mexico City Zoo, La Feria amusement park, and the Museum of Anthropology, which houses a vast collection of sculptures, jewels, and artifacts from ancient Mexican civilizations. The museum costs 85 MXN, as does the Chapultepec Castillo (Castle) which houses the National History Museum. You can also rent a rowboat or paddle boat and go out on Chapultepec Lake for 60 MXN. Entry to the park itself is free.

2. Visit the markets

Just about every town in Mexico has a busy, diverse market where you can enjoy traditional food, pick up some bargain items, and purchase souvenirs. Two of the best are the Mercado Ciudadela in Mexico City (for handmade textiles and artwork), and Oaxaca’s Mercado Benito Juárez (for local foods like fresh ground coffee beans, juices, and grasshopper tacos). If you’re in Merida, check out Mercado Santa Ana for their Yucatecan cuisine, like cochito horneado , a marinated pork dish that is slow-cooked in underground pits, or head to El Mercado Lucas de Galvez for their specialty seafood cocktails (the locals swear by it to cure your hangover).

3. Explore Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución)

Zócalo is the main plaza in the heart of Mexico City. It dates back to the Aztecs, encompassing both the Templo Mayor (an ancient Aztec temple) and the Palacio Nacional (a colonial palace with offices of Mexico’s president). Situated just off the Zócalo is La Catedral Metropolitana, a magnificent cathedral with a gold altar. It’s a perfect example of Spanish colonial architecture.

4. Go diving

The seas surrounding Mexico have some of the world’s best diving spots thanks to their diverse marine life, large coral reefs (including the second largest reef system in the world, the Great Maya Barrier Reef), and excellent visibility. The Gulf of Mexico is home to five different species of sea turtles, blue whales, lemon sharks, and dolphins, and so much more! Aside from diving, the waters are popular for snorkeling, sports fishing, waterboarding, surfing, and more or less any other watersports. A two-tank dive starts at 2,800 MXN. Some of the best places to dive in Mexico are Discovery Bay, Cenote Dos Ojos, Revillagigedo Islands, and Isla Mujeres.

5. Relax in Cancún

Depending on what you’re looking to do, Cancún can offer you a crazy-fun party in the sun or some quiet and hidden local markets and restaurants. You have spas, resorts, and picturesque beaches as well as Mayan ruins, archaeological sites, and little nearby villages. There’s a ton to see and do here if you leave the resorts!

6. Get lost in Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the second-largest city in Mexico and is known for its tequila and mariachi. It’s chock full of museums, such as Cabañas (a UNESCO building with incredible murals), MUSA (paintings & sculptures by local artists), and the Páramo Galeria (contemporary art); nightlife venues, and a labyrinth of old colonial streets. Visit the Hospicio Cabañas, a hospital built in the 19th century, and then spend some time at the Guadalajara Cathedral. The cathedral’s Gothic interior features artworks from famous Mexican artists like Murillo (a Baroque painter).

7. See Teotihuacan

The Aztec empire left an enormous mark on Mexico. Don’t miss the awe-inspiring Aztec pyramids at Teotihuacan, located 48 kilometers (30 miles) outside of Mexico City. Teotihuacan was founded as early as 400 BCE, but its biggest structures weren’t completed until around 300 BCE. Its three giant pyramids are known as the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of Moon, and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, and they dominate the landscape. If you’re going to visit just one Aztec site, this is it. It’s unsheltered here, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Admission is 85 MXN. Full-day guided tours from Mexico City cost 880 MXN.

8. Visit the bizarre Island of Dolls

Known as “La Isla de la Muñecas” in Spanish, this is perhaps one of the creepiest tourist attractions in the world. Decades ago, a hermit named Don Julian Santana moved here, learned a girl drowned in the nearby lake, and started collecting and hanging dolls all over the island to please the drowned girl’s spirit. It’s creepy. Like beyond creepy. You’ll have to hire a boat from Xochimilco to get there but it’s worth it!

9. Honor the Day of the Dead

Yearly on November 1st and 2nd, Mexico celebrates a major festival: Día de Los Muertos. The festival is a vibrant and lively affair with celebrations for those who are gone but not forgotten, including parades and elaborate and colorful costumes. Families also commemorate their dead relatives by setting up ofrendas , or altars, with pictures of the deceased, candles, yellow marigold petals, and food. This meant to encourage the deceased to cross back over into the land of the living and join in the celebrations. Oaxaca or Mexico City are the two best places to experience this celebration.

10. Visit the UNAM Botanical Garden

If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of Mexico City for a little while, the Botanical Garden at the National Autonomous University of Mexico is the perfect place. Keeping with the Aztec traditions of having gardens for both medicinal and ornamental purposes, there is also an added focus on conservation and environmental education here. Built on top of and around lava formations from the eruption of the volcano Xitle (which happened over 2,000 years ago), visitors can explore the naturally formed grottoes, ponds, and waterfalls. This garden has the most diverse cactus collection in the world (800 different kinds!), and ponds full of koi and turtles, an orchidarium, and a medicinal garden. Admission is free.

11. Relax on Isla Holbox

Holbox is an island located off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and is home to white sand beaches and crystalline waters. It is a relaxing, slow-paced island that’s easy to get stuck on. One day can easily turn into a week. It’s an island paradise where you can relax in a hammock on the beach, hike in the jungles, swim, dive, snorkel, and everything in between! While it used to be a hidden gem, it’s slowly becoming more and more popular (and developed). Be sure to see bioluminescent waters here. From Cancún, you can get to the ferry port at Chiquilá in around two hours by bus. The ferry takes 25 minutes and costs 220 MXN. If you just want to visit for the day, full-day tours from Cancún/Playa del Carmen cost 3,000 MXN.

12. Visit Mérida

Mérida is one of my favorite places in all of Mexico. It is a safe and wonderful city filled with history, cool mezcal bars, and some of the best food in the country. Some of my favorite places to eat and drink in town are La Chaya Maya Casona, Acervo Mezcalero, La Negrita Cantina, and Café Créme. Also, don’t miss the nearby Uxmal ruins, which are just one-hour away. There are also some cool museums here, like the Folk Art Museum of Yucatan, the Yucatan Music Museum, and the City Museum (which has all kinds of Mayan artifacts). 13. Enjoy San Cristóbal de las Casas’ architecture

San Cristóbal is a highland town known for its charming colonial architecture. There are narrow cobblestone streets, local craft markets, and the entire area is enveloped in pine forests. Don’t miss the town’s 16th-century cathedral, and if you want to get out and explore the nearby nature, take a boat tour of the Cañón de Sumidero. You’ll see tons of birds, monkeys, and crocodiles. 14. Sample the Cenotes of Yucatan

Cenotes are natural sinkholes that are full of groundwater. They were used by the Mayans as sources for freshwater, however, today they are popular swimming holes for locals and tourists alike (you can even scuba dive in some). There are tons of them all around the Yucatan Peninsula. Some are completely exposed, some are walled in by cliffs, and some are covered entirely by caves. Calavera, Cristalino, Casa Cenote, Yaxmuul, Choo-Ha, and Escondido Cenote are some of the most popular cenotes in the region. If you’d rather do a tour, you can join a cenote tour for around 1,350 MXN.

15. Visit Sayulita

Located on the Pacific coast, Sayulita is a hip beach town with a lively community of expats and surfers. The town has a laid-back vibe owing to the sizable surfing and yoga community. It’s a great place to surf and there are plenty of yoga retreats available here. You can also take a jungle trek, go zip lining, ride ATVs along the coast, and simply soak up the sun on the beach. It’s the perfect place to chill for a few days. Canopy tours start at 1,800 MXN.

16. Explore Campeche

Campeche is located just south of Merida on the Yucatan. It’s home to UNESCO World Heritage colonial architecture, including fortified walls and over 2,000 historic buildings. Visit the Museo De La Arquitectura Maya for Mayan history and antiquities, see the Mayan ruins at Edzná (which is just 45 minutes away and sees very few tourists), and wander the old city wall to take in the view.

Mexico Travel Costs

Accommodation – In Mexico, hostels start at 250 MXN per night for a dorm bed, but average closer to 300 MXN. Private hostel rooms cost anything from 600-1,900 MXN per night. Prices are usually a bit lower in the low-season or shoulder-season. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast are both common, as are self-catering facilities.

For those traveling with a tent, a basic plot for two people without electricity costs around 200 MXN per night.

For budget hotels, expect to pay 700 MXN for a basic room in a two-star hotel. These two-star rooms typically include an en-suite bathroom and free Wi-Fi, but not always air conditioning.

Airbnb is also an option in Mexico, with private rooms starting around 300 MXN but averaging much more (usually between 600-1,200 MXN). Entire homes and apartments average around 1,000-1,800 MXN although you can find them for as little as 600 MXN if you book early.

Food – You’ll find a lot of rice, beans, fruits, and veggies like tomatoes, corn, avocado, and peppers in Mexican cuisine, which is a mix of Mayan, Aztec, and Spanish traditions. Typical Mexican dishes include tacos, mole (a sauce with lots of ingredients, often including chocolate), salsa, enchiladas, tamales (stuffed corn pockets), pozole (hominy stew topped with onion, avocado, and chili), and guacamole.

Street stalls and markets are the best way to go for authentic and inexpensive food. Tacos, quesadilla, sopas, tortas, and other street foods are generally 15-45 MXN. Sometimes, you’ll find tacos for as cheap as 10 MXN. In Mexico, street food is the best — and most affordable — option.

A meal at a local Mexican restaurant serving traditional cuisine costs around 150 MXN. Look for the ones filled with locals as that is generally a sign that the food is really good. Expect to pay around 300 MXN for a multi-course meal in a mid-range restaurant.

A beer is about 20 MXN in the street but double that at a restaurant, while a cocktail shouldn’t cost more than 80 MXN in most places. A combo meal at McDonald’s costs around 120 MXN and a cappuccino costs around 50 MXN.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Mexico. If you’re buying bottles of water, expect to pay 15 MXN (less if you buy in bulk but a more environmentally friendly (and cheaper) solution is to bring a portable water purifier ( LifeStraw makes a good one.

If you plan to cook your meals, expect to pay between 750 MXN per week for groceries including rice, vegetables, chicken, and beans.

Backpacking Mexico Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Mexico, expect to spend around 800 MXN per day. This budget gets you a hostel dorm, street food and self-cooked meals, public transportation, and a few attractions (such as museums and galleries) each day. If you plan on eating out more or drinking, you’ll need to add another 100 MXN per day.

On a mid-range budget of about 1,800 MXN per day, you can stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, eat out at restaurants serving cheap traditional cuisine for every meal, visit more attractions, enjoy a few drinks, and take the occasional taxi to get around.

On a “luxury” budget of 3,600 MXN or more per day, you can stay at a hotel, eat out for all your meals, enjoy plenty of drinks, take taxis everywhere or rent a car, and do some guided trips and tours. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Mexico Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Mexico is incredibly budget-friendly. Unless you’re splurging on food or resorts, it’s really easy to visit on a budget. That said, it never hurts to save more money! Here are some ways to save in Mexico:

• Shop at the markets for food – Mexico’s markets are a great place to eat inexpensively and stock up on food for day trips. Most towns have a local market selling fresh fruits, veggies, and other goods for cheap.
• Eat street food – Street food is the best food in the country — and the cheapest. Stick to street stalls to save money and enjoy the country’s best eats.
• Take a free walking tour – Many cities have free walking tours that give you a solid introduction to the main sights. Both Mexico City and Oaxaca have excellent free tours — just be sure to tip your guide!
• Travel off-season – By traveling between late April and early December, you can pick up bargain accommodation, food and travel rates as this is low season.
• Venture inland – Mexico’s coasts are the most famous, most touristy parts of the country, but the interior has an amazing amount to offer. Prices are cheaper, and you’ll be more likely to meet some locals if you head away from the coast.
• Stay with a local – Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals and connect with people who can share their insider tips and advice. Just make sure to send your requests early.
• Embrace “comida corrida” – This hearty mid-day meal option is usually available between 2pm-4pm and is often quite affordable. It’s a set menu, but it’s much cheaper than most lunch or dinner options. If you plan on eating out on a budget, aim for places that offer comida corrida.
• Drink less – Alcohol is cheap in Mexico, but it’s definitely more expensive at bars and clubs. Try to buy your alcohol from a local store instead of drinking at the bar if you’re on a budget.
• Skip the taxis – Taxis are overpriced and not always safe. Skip them. If you do need a taxi, don’t just hail one on the street. Head into a nearby hotel/hostel and ask them to call one for you. Only get in taxis that use a meter.
• Being a water filter – Since the tap water here isn’t safe to drink and single-use plastic is bad for the environment, bring a water bottle with a built-in filter. LifeStraw makes reusable bottles with a built-in filter so you can ensure your water is always clean and safe.

How to Get Around Mexico

Public transportation – Public buses (also known as camiones ) are the most common way to get around in cities and towns (and to nearby villages). These buses are also the cheapest, costing no more than a few pesos per journey. In some cities, smaller microbuses have replaced the older buses, but the cost is still the same.

Mexico City and Guadalajara have subway systems. One-way tickets for the subway and the bus system are around 5 MXN. In Mexico City, you’ll have to buy a rechargeable Metro Card at any of the Metro stations for 15 MXN, and you can use the card for the Metro, Metrobús, Light Rail, Ecobici, Trolleybus, RTP buses, and on Cablebús.

Bus – Most of Mexico is served by buses. On longer journeys, make sure to take an express bus (called a “directo”) if you can as they are much faster and stop less. A bus from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara (5.5 hours) costs around 585 MXN. A bus from Cancún to Mexico City (27 hours) costs around 1,800 MXN. A bus from Puebla to Mexico City (2 hours) costs around 200 MXN.

Some of the biggest and most reliable bus companies include:

• Omnibuses de Mexico
• ETN (Enlaces Terrestres Nacionales)

Most cities have a central bus terminal from where all long-distance buses depart. You can show up to buy your ticket, or research routes and ticket prices via each company’s website.

Train – There are virtually no passenger train services remaining in Mexico. For long-distance travel, you’ll need to fly or take the bus.

Flying – For long journeys, consider flying. The route from Cancún to Mexico City by bus takes 27 hours and costs around 1,800 MXN but a flight starts around 470 MXN and only takes two hours. A one-way fare from Mexico City to Guadalajara is about 525 MXN. Even a four-hour flight from coast to coast from Cancún to Puerto Vallarta is just 1,200 MXN one-way.

Aeroméxico is the biggest airline in Mexico, but low-cost carriers are becoming more popular. These include:

Car rentals – Car rentals are surprisingly affordable in Mexico. You can find week-long rentals for around 3,000 MXN. Renters must be 21 years of age and have had their license for at least two years. Some companies require renters to be over 25 and it’s best to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). When to Go to Mexico

Summer (June to October) is the rainy season in Mexico, but this is mostly just in the center of the country. You can expect it to rain each day heavily, but the downpour is usually short. It hardly ever rains in the northern part of the country, and humidity is thick in the south and along the coastal areas. Temperatures during this time hover somewhere between 26-32°C (79-90°F).

September to the middle of October is hurricane season and is not a good time to visit.

December to the end of April (winter) is the busiest tourist season as temperatures are hot, but the coastal areas provide plenty of relief for vacationers. This is the best time to visit if you’re looking to take advantage of Mexico’s tropical environment. It’s the dry season, so you’ll experience very little rain. You can expect big crowds as people flock to the resort areas around Cancún and Puerto Vallarta.

The average daily temperature during this time is 28°C (82°F). But if you’re in the mountains, pack lots of layers! It can get frigid, especially in the evenings.

How to Stay Safe in Mexico

The media (especially the American media) likes to paint Mexico as a dangerous place to visit but the reality is far more complex. While petty theft is very common in Mexico, most of the serious conflicts occur between the authorities and Mexican drug cartels. The people who tend to be involved in major incidents are usually doing drugs or taking part in sex tourism. Avoid those, and you’ll drastically increase your chances of staying safe.

Moreover, where you are greatly influences how safe you are. Yucatan and Oaxaca are incredibly safe states to visit while states near the US border are less so and more likely to experience violence and crime.

Officials looking for bribes are pretty common in Quintana Roo, as is drug-related violence due to tourists looking for drugs there. States near the southern border can also be sketchy and it’s wiser to keep an eye out on your stuff there though violent crime is pretty uncommon.

So don’t believe the media that “Mexico is unsafe.” Mexico is like any big country – some parts are safe, and some parts aren’t. Use some common sense when you travel: don’t flash your money, avoid wearing expensive watches or jewelry, don’t walk along drunk at night, make copies of your passport and official documents, and tell people where you are regularly.

Another important safety tip to keep in mind is about the water. While Mexico’s water purification and treatment systems have improved, it still is not safe to drink ordinary tap water when visiting. Luckily, bottled water is available everywhere. Bringing water filter like LifeStraw is advised as it has a built-in filter so your water is always clean and safe.

Keep an eye out for common scams against tourists , such as fake ATMs, taxis that don’t use a meter, and questionable tour operators.

The emergency services number in Mexico is 911. However, if that doesn’t work (since it isn’t in use in every region of Mexico), try 066.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Roundtrip airfare from Houston to Cancún typically costs around $200 on airlines like Frontier or Spirit this time of year, but you'll pay extra for baggage.

Budget Travel Tip : Be sure to set a tracker on Google Flights to keep an eye out for the best times to travel for less, and especially if you can be flexible on the dates.

All-inclusive resorts to help save on your stay

Mexico is home to a bevy of beautiful properties, but the best bang for your buck when it comes to accommodations are all-inclusive resorts.

"All-inclusive hotels can be extremely affordable. And the best part is they allow families especially to budget," The Points Guy founder, Brian Kelly, told "GMA."

To make sure you're getting the best deal, he suggested "comparison shop online using online travel agencies, but when you hone in on the one you want, contact them directly and negotiate for an even better rate and extra perks like airport pickups."

"Choose the right resort, whether that's kid friendly or adults-only," Kelly said, "making the right choice is critical to your experience."

"Finally, take advantage of everything there is to offer," he said. "Go to the orientation and pay attention. You'd be shocked at some of the free, valuable activities you can get as part of your stay."

In Playa del Carmen, Sandos Caracol Eco Resort offers up to 55% off the best available rate all summer, plus two kids stay free.

Like many all-inclusives food and drinks are bundled into the price at Sandos Caracol, but so are the activities from pools with waterslides to bike tours.

This region of Mexico is also home to beautiful ancient Mayan ruins and cenotes -- which translates to well -- and the all-natural cavernous pit makes a perfect place for swimming, diving and snorkeling.

Activities to enjoy the area like a local

Book off-site excursions during your stay, whether directly through the resort with any affiliated companies or going directly to an excursion company and ask for any potential discounts.

Tours of Tulum reveal ancient history

Nestled on the cliffs of Tulum lie ancient Mayan ruins that overlook the Caribbean Sea.

Tour services will take visitors through the area to fully experience the ancient Mexican culture, like ruins built over 800 years ago that served as a major port between Mexico and Central America.

Parks and pleasantries in Playa del Carmen

Take a trip to Parque Los Fundadores -- Founding Fathers Park -- in Playa Del Carmen to see free vibrant performances such as the Danza de Los Voladores -- the dance of the flyers.

We have been to Cancun many times over the years, and one of the main questions that we always get is, “Is Cancun safe?” Truthfully, the situation has always been fluid, and while we have personally felt safe in Cancun, it is important to check your government website warnings, follow basic safety precautions, and be aware of your surroundings. Mexico takes its tourism seriously and they want international visitors to continue to spend their dollars, so they are working hard to keep Cancun safe, especially in the tourist zones and the tourist hotspots.

Is Cancun Safe to Visit?

As of March 2024, the US State Department updated its travel warnings for Quintana Roo, which is home to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. It removed the warning about an increased risk of kidnapping, but the country is still under a level 2 advisory.

As of March 2024, the Government of Canada notes that the region of Cancun has high rates of violent crime, such as homicides, kidnappings, carjacking, and assaults.

Cancun’s Current Safety Situation

Cancun is located in the State of Quintana Roo, including Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and the Riviera Maya. These areas bring in a lot of dollars into Mexico, and this is certainly one of the safer areas in the country, especially compared to other states. If you follow these tips and do your own research, you will find that you will feel a lot safer on your next trip should you choose to travel to Cancun.

Cancun’s security has been under a microscope due to incidents of criminal activity involving tourists. The Mexican government has taken great action to ensure the safety of visitors and citizens in Cancun. Mexico Travel Advisories

For the latest advisory warnings, visit th e US State Department’s Website . Right now, the State Department website warns that ” Violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico.” However, when you read further, it states, “Exercise Normal Precautions When Traveling To the Yucatan State.

**Update**: On February 27, 2024, the U.S. Embassy & Consulates In Mexico Department issued a warning for all U.S. travelers visiting Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean for Spring Break Travel in 2024. Only Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum were mentioned in the warning. You can check out the full message here and what they suggest.

Canada currently has a warning of “High rates of violent crime, such as homicides, kidnappings, carjacking, and assaults, including in popular tourist destinations such as the Mayan Riviera (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulum), and Acapulco.” It states that drug cartels have a presence in tourist areas. There has been intergang fighting at establishments frequented by tourists where innocent bystanders have been killed or injured.

Incidents like this can happen in any large city or tourist destination. To put things into perspective, Cancun currently has a crime index of 56.33. When you look at the crime rate in New Orleans, Cancun is much lower than the rating of 67.92. See the comparison here.

Crime Rates in Cancun

Cancun has a crime rate that is similar to many major cities in the United States, most of which revolve around drug-trafficking turf wars and gang-related violence. Tourists are rarely the target, and if you keep yourself out of trouble. Avoid buying drugs, don’t stay out until the wee hours of the morning, and limit your alcohol consumption off the resort. By following common sense safety measures, you can lower your chances of any incident.

Compared to other Mexican cities, Cancun’s crime rate remains relatively low, meaning vacationers shouldn’t be too concerned about any crimes during their visit. However, they should still exercise a degree of caution.

Mexican Government’s Efforts

The Mexican government has increased security around Cancun International Airport by dispatching extra police forces and protection systems, in order to put a stop to petty crime that mainly targets travelers.

The Mexican government has taken extra security steps to protect Cancun’s standing as a favored tourist spot. These include a greater police presence at popular tourist areas such as resorts within the Hotel Zone , surveillance cameras, and gated entrances for visitors.

Initiatives were also undertaken to reduce corruption among law enforcement in this area, which resulted in the removal of numerous police officers from their posts and several top-level personnel from office due to misconduct. You can read about it here .

We didn’t stay in resorts but three different locations and took local buses and walked around at night and at no time did we feel even the slightest concern about our safety or security.
