Frequently Asked Questions to Help Plan Your Future Rocky Mountaineer Vacation.
Are Canadian Trips Worth It?
Without a doubt, Canadian train trips are well worth the time and cost. The Rocky Mountaineer offers a luxury travel experience, with excellent service and gourmet food, as you take in the spectacular views of the Canadian Rockies. It makes travel about the journey and not just the destination, although the destinations are wonderful .
When should you book your Rocky Mountaineer Vacation?
We highly recommend booking your Rocky Mountaineer vacation at least 11 months in advance to guarantee the dates that you want. The trains do not depart every day and the trains are only operational between mid-April to mid-October, so space can be limited.
What is the best month to take the Rocky Mountaineer?
Any time of year is beautiful onboard the Rocky Mountaineer, so t h e best month depends on you r preference . April to the beginning of May is less expensive, but many of the lakes will still be frozen and it will be cooler. This also means that some of the excursions offered in our tours will not be available, although you will get more time to explore the area on your own. June is perfect for seeing wildlife, but it may rain more than other months. July is when Calgary hosts the Calgary Stampede , and August and September are the driest months which offer the best weather for sightseeing. This mean s that you will see more crowds and will want to make dining reservations at more popular locations far in advance. September is the first month to sell out every year. October has the fall foliage, and you will see a decrease in the crowds, along with a decrease in the temperature at night.
What is the best Canadian Rockies train route with Rocky Mountaineer?
The Rocky Mountaineer has three unforgettable Canadian routes for you to choose from. The most popular is the First Passage to the West, connecting Vancouver to Banff along the route famous for uniting Canada’s East and West. The Journey Through the Clouds takes you to Jasper to see the highest peaks in the Canadian Rockies, while the Rainforest to Gold Rush route to Jasper will take you from British Columbia’s coastal rainforest to the historic Cariboo Gold Rush region before ending in the Canadian Rockies. All three routes offer spectacular views and pass by iconic landmarks .
How much does it cost to take the Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies?
The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury, two to three-day train trip, and the price does reflect this. April and October are the cheapest, followed by May to July, with August and September being the most expensive. Prices in 2024 for double occupancy, with GoldLeaf Service, range between CAD $2,769 and CAD $4,499, plus tax. There are no discounts for children of any age or seniors .
Is it worth paying extra for GoldLeaf Service on the Rocky Mountaineer?
There are two levels of service offered onboard Rocky Mountaineer’s Canadian routes, GoldLeaf Service and SilverLeaf , with only GoldLeaf Service offered on the Rainforest to Gold Rush route.
You will experience excellent service, gourmet meals, and stunning views regardless of whether you have GoldLeaf Service or SilverLeaf Service. However, upgrading to GoldLeaf Service is absolutely worth the cost. Glass-dome windows on the upper floor of the bi-level car allow you to have a full 180-degree view, and meals are served in the dining room on the lower level. You also are given access to a large, open-air outdoor viewing platform.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is strongly recommended that you purchase travel insurance for your Rocky Mountaineer trip. These trips are non-refundable, so it is important that you ar e covered. Travel insurance not only protects you in the event of a medical emergency but also covers trip cancellation and interruption. To find more information about who we recommend you can click here: Travel Insurance
How long is a train trip across Canada?
Your time onboard the Rocky Mountaineer for all routes will be two days, with the exception of the Rainforest to Gold Rush route which will give you three days. If you would like to spend more time on the rail I recommend one of our Canadian Rockies Circle Tours , in which you would start and end your journey in Vancouver and get between four to five days on the train.
Your tour, however, can be anywhere from four days to two weeks, depending on how long you would like to spend in each location.
How far do you travel on the Rocky Mountaineer?
On the Rocky Mountaineer’s Canadian routes, you will travel approximately 450 kilometres (280 miles) each day, with the shortest route being only 119 kilometres (74 miles) between Vancouver and Whistler. On their American routes, you will travel approximately 300 kilometres (185 miles) each day.
Do you sleep on the Rocky Mountaineer train?
No. The Rocky Mountaineer offers daylight-only rail journeys, allowing guests to take in all the stunning scenery. All overnight stops in Kamloops, Whistler, and Quesnel are spent in hotels.
How is seating assigned onboard the train?
At check-i n, you will receive your boarding pass with your seat and overnight accommodation information. If you would like to sit near someone who has booked separately, please let us know when booking. Seating is pre-assigned and multiple couples and families are typically seated across the aisle from each other. Rocky Mountaineer is unable to accommodate specific seat, coach location, or meal seating requests .
Is one side of the train better than the other in terms of views?
No. Both sides of the train will offer unique views, and on many of the routes that follow a river, the tracks cross over a bridge to allow all guests to be waterside . Rocky Mountaineer also encourages guests to get up from their seats , so they will be able to experience views from various vantage points.
You can learn more about seating on the train i n our blog here, How to get the best seat aboard the Rocky Mountaineer .
What is the dress code on the Rocky Mountaineer?
There is no dress code on the Rocky Mountaineer, although most guests tend to dress smart casual. It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing and comfortable, flat shoes with adequate grip. It is also a good idea to dress in layers, bringing a light sweater or jacket for the open-air vestibule.
Are there electrical outlets or Wi-Fi on Rocky Mountaineer trains?
Wi-Fi is not available, and much of the train route is out of cell service as the train travels through remote parts of Canada . T here are both electrical outlets and USB ports at your seat .
What is food like on the Rocky Mountaineer?
Rocky Mountaineer’s culinary team strives to create sophisticated and diverse menus with the finest locally sourced ingredients. Guests have their meals served alongside award-winning BC wines and locally brewed beers.
Every season they do a brand-new menu, although they do consider guests’ feedback. Note that there are no alternative kids’ menu items.
Does Rocky Mountaineer accommodate dietary restrictions?
While onboard, meus will have a selection of options that can cater to various dietary requirements, such as vegetarian and gluten-friendly . T o guarantee that you are accommodated and receive the best service you should notify us of any restrictions or allergies when booking .
How does meal seating work in GoldLeaf Service?
While SilverLeaf Service guests are served their meals at their seats, GoldLeaf Service guests are served meals in two seatings in the dining area on the lower level of the GoldLeaf Panoramic Dome Car. Second-seating guests are served beverages and snacks while the first-seating guests are being served. Meal seatings are reversed on the second day.
How do I get to the train station?
When you book with Canada Rail Vacations , all our Rocky Mountaineer tour packages of four days or more include transfers from our partnered hotels to and from the railway station. Rocky Mountaineer staff members will meet you in your hotel lobby to collect your luggage and bring you to the train station .
Is the Rocky Mountaineer wheelchair accessible?
Yes. There are lifts for embarkin g and disembarking and an elevator in GoldLeaf Service to aid in moving from your seat to the dining area . You can learn more about accessibility on the train i n our blog here, Accessible Train Travel in Canada .
What should I pack for my Rocky Mountaineer vacation?
For any trip in Canada, we recommend packing layers and bringing a daypack onboard with you as you will not have access to your luggage while on the train. For luggage and packing questions , you can learn more on our blog here , What to Pack for a Canadian Train Trip .
Tips for your trip aboard the Rocky Mountaineer
- Turn off your camera’s automatic flash to prevent glare and if you are using your mobile phone to take pictures, press your camera lens directly against the window to avoid reflections.
- Prepare for upcoming photo-ops by reading the mile marker descriptions in the Mile Post, Rocky Mountaineer’s publication, and by listening to host announcements.
- Share the vestibule – you cannot move between cars so there is only one open-air vestibule per car for all GoldLeaf Service guests to share. On a full train, you can have up to 72 guests per car. The GoldLeaf Service vestibule can comfortably accommodate 4 guests at a time, while the SilverLeaf Service vestibule is covered and can only comfortably accommodate 2 guests at a time.
- Be patient – the train shares the rails with freight trains so there may be delays.
- Be aware of the time zone change. British Columbia is PDT while Alberta is MDT.
- A full breakfast is served shortly after departure, but you may want to grab a coffee and snack before leaving your hotel.
- Remember to have your onboard daypack.
- Prepare for motion sickness by having either motion sickness medication or acupressure wristbands. Eating a green apple can also help with alleviating motion sickness symptoms.

Consult the map of your Rocky Mountaineer route for more information about what stops are included on each itinerary.
First Passage to the West
This route connects Vancouver and Banff and is the line the company first established when it was founded in 1990. Memorable spots along the way include the charming train station at Lake Louise, the Stoney Creek Bridge, the dramatic Fraser and Thompson River Canyons and the location where the last spike was added to the railway in 1885.

The rocky mountaineer service levels.
Rocky Mountaineer offers two enticing service levels — Goldleaf and Silverleaf — with features that appeal to every traveller. We can help you decide which service level is right for you.
GoldLeaf Service
On GoldLeaf, you can take in Canada's iconic landscape from a bi-level glass-dome luxury coach. During meals, you’ll feast on gourmet creations by Executive Chefs.
The GoldLeaf cars are double-level, and your assigned seat will be on the top floor, right underneath the dome window where you will have 360-degree views of the scenery around you. Downstairs is the dining room, where you will be served a la carte meals prepared onboard. GoldLeaf cars also feature an outdoor viewing platform where you can step outside for some fresh mountain air.
SilverLeaf Service
Winding through the Canadian Rockies onboard a luxury coach, you'll come face to face with magnificent scenery. It can be so breathtaking, you may think you’re dreaming.
Hot gourmet breakfasts and lunches served at your spacious seat means you won't have to miss a moment of the splendour out your window. Nor will you miss a moment of the latest historical tidbit from your onboard Host. SilverLeaf cars also feature outdoor vestibules between the cars where you can step outside and feel the cool mountain breeze on your face.
Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf vs SilverLeaf Service
Which is the best option for your Canadian train getaway? To help you decide which level of service is perfect for you, here’s a quick comparison between GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf.
Both SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf include:
- complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
- entertaining commentary
- baggage handling in Kamloops and Quesnel
Seasons on Rocky Mountaineer
Spring (april and may).
With views of lush green landscapes and snow-capped mountains, the spring season is a lovely time for a Rocky Mountaineer train ride. The fresh snowmelt from the mountains means that waterfalls and rivers are at their most powerful. Bears emerge from hibernation and other animals become more active as the weather warms up. Flowers also start to bloom, adding pops of colour into the landscape. There are often less visitors during the spring, so it is a quieter time to visit the Canadian Rockies.
Summer (June, July and August)
Summer means longer days, lots of sunshine, and warm temperatures. In the Canadian Rockies, alpine wildflowers appear on the slopes of the mountains and the glacier-fed lakes have completely thawed, showing their crystal-clear turquoise waters once again. This is a popular time of year for those who want to explore the outdoors and enjoy the drier, warmer weather.
Fall (September and October)
Fall is a stunning time of year to travel. Some trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red during the fall season, and this kaleidoscope of colours can be witnessed on all Rocky Mountaineer train routes. Early snowfall at higher elevations in the Canadian Rockies adds a magical touch to the picturesque landscapes. In October, it’s sometimes possible to see grizzly bears fishing for salmon by the edge of the rivers.
Winter (November to March)
Rocky Mountaineer does not operate during the colder months. If you’d like to see the breathtaking Canadian Rockies in winter, then there are other train experiences that run year-round.
Photography Opportunities on The Rocky Mountaineer Train
You can capture amazing photos of Western Canada’s beautiful scenery as you travel on Rocky Mountaineer. The luxury train is designed to provide guests with the best sightseeing experience and optimal photo opportunities.
Best Vantage Points on the Train
Both SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf train coaches have glass-dome windows, which means you can snap stellar shots from the comfort of your seat.
One of the advantages of GoldLeaf service is that there are more spaces to take photos from: there’s the upper-level seating area which has full glass-dome windows, the lower-level dining room where gourmet meals are served at tables next to large windows, and the exclusive outdoor viewing platform. When the train is curving round a bend, the outdoor viewing platform is the best place to be for taking photos!
In SilverLeaf, there is a small outdoor viewing area between train coaches. This outdoor area only fits a couple of people at one time, but it’s a great place for taking quick photos of notable sights and getting closer to the scenery.
Photography Tips and Tricks
- The train never fully stops, but it does slow down at scenic spots and for wildlife. We recommend listening to the host’s onboard commentary as they will announce upcoming sights and let guests know when wildlife has been spotted near the tracks.
- When taking photos from inside the train, hold your phone or camera close to the glass. This helps to eliminate any glare from the photo. In addition to the beautiful landscapes outside, the interior of the train can make for interesting photos.
- Wildlife sightings are unpredictable and can happen at any moment! Make sure your camera is set up with your desired settings in advance, so you’re always ready to take photos.
- Make friends with your fellow guests so you can swap photos at the end of your trip! If you missed taking a photo of a certain location or memorable moment, ask to see if someone else on the train managed to capture it.
How to Plan a Rocky Mountaineer Trip
The first step of planning a Rocky Mountaineer trip is to decide when you want to travel! Each season (spring, summer, fall) offers a different experience and the best time to travel depends on what you’d like to see.
You should also think about your ideal starting location and what other Canadian destinations you might like to visit before or after your train ride. This will help you decide which Rocky Mountaineer trip is best for you.
We recommend booking your trip as early as possible — many dates and Rocky Mountaineer routes sell out months in advance. Speak to one of our local travel experts to learn more about how to plan your train journey.

When you are preparing for your Rocky Mountaineer luxury train journey, it’s important to pack a range of light clothing layers — no matter what season you are travelling in. You will travel through various climate regions and the temperature on the train can fluctuate throughout the day. Make sure you bring:
- Comfortable, flat-soled shoes
- Comfortable clothing — you will be sitting down for most of the day!
- A light sweater or jacket
- Hat and sunglasses
Rocky Mountaineer Train Experience Add-Ons
Alaska cruise .
The rail portion of your trip can come before or after your Alaska cruise. A smaller ship allows you to visit more coves and inlets, and offers a more immersive experience in the area. Ask your travel advisor about adding a cruise to your Rocky Mountaineer trip. It involves an easy flight from Vancouver to the port of departure.
Floatplane Sightseeing
For an extra dose of adventure, hop on a floatplane and glide over Vancouver's skyline or the natural wonders of Whistler in British Columbia. Floatplanes take off from and land on the water, putting you right in the middle of the action.
Helicopter Tours
Enjoy 360-degree views of the Canadian Rockies while sightseeing via helicopter. You'll gain a new appreciation for Canada's natural beauty as you hover above lakes, rivers and waterfalls. You may even get a glimpse of the local wildlife.
#2 Travel tip: Wildlife viewing
Rocky Mountaineer hosts will make announcements for wildlife sightings and the train will slow down, giving you the opportunity to get your camera ready or head to the outdoor platform.
Places to Visit
From the shimmering waters of Vancouver to the fresh mountain air of Jasper, the Rocky Mountaineer train travels through many of Canada's best scenery and cities. Your Canadian Train Vacation Advisor can help personalize a trip for you that includes the best places to visit in Western Canada. Our Rocky Mountaineer rail packages may include stops in the following places.
Vancouver
All of the Rocky Mountaineer trips in Canada start or end in Vancouver. This West Coast city is a popular summer destination due to its mild climate. It's warm, but not so warm that you'd rather spend your whole vacation indoors. Vancouver blends world-class restaurants and cultural attractions with soaring mountains and outdoor activities — everything from easy paddles to challenging hiking trails, giving every traveller something fun to do.
Jasper
If you want to spend your vacation relaxing, Jasper is the perfect destination. It's a sleepy mountain town with plenty of places to rest after a morning of paddling, hiking or sightseeing. It’s home to inviting bakeries and a brewpub, as well as several nice dining establishments.
Banff
Located in Alberta, Banff is home to Banff National Park, one of Canada's most popular attractions. The town itself is filled with restaurants and shops, but the nearby national park offers tempting outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts. If you visit Banff National Park, you'll see lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and mountain peaks.
Lake Louise
Crystal-clear water and stunning glacier peaks are just a few of the many reasons to visit Lake Louise. Paddling enthusiasts flock to the lake during the summer months, but Lake Louise has year-round outdoor activities.
Whistler
Whistler, British Columbia, has fine-dining establishments, trendy shops and other amenities to make your visit to the Canadian Rockies a memorable one. Relax at a local spa or play a round of golf while you're in town. One of Whistler's most popular attractions is the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which links Roundhouse Lodge with Rendezvous Lodge. The Rocky Mountaineer only runs in the warmer months, but Whistler is a famous ski destination.
Kamloops
Originally settled by the Shuswap First Nation, Kamloops is a popular stop on several Rocky Mountaineer train routes. Travellers enjoy visiting local wineries and viewing wildlife at BC Animal Park. The stop here on your Rocky Mountaineer trip is a quick overnight visit. You’ll see most of the sights from the train.
Quesnel
Nestled between Prince George and Williams Lake, Quesnel is a popular stop on the route through British Columbia to the Yukon. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Quesnel for some of the best fishing, hiking and canoeing in the world. Like Quesnel, the stop here on your Rocky Mountaineer trip is a quick overnight visit. You’ll see most of the sights from the train.
The Rocky Mountaineer does operate daylight sightseeing trains in both the USA and Canada.
In the USA, the Rocky Mountaineer only has one rail route, which travels between Moab, Utah, and Denver, Colorado. There is an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs.
In Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer has three routes through the Canadian Rockies, between British Columbia and Alberta. You can go from Vancouver to Banff, Jasper, or Lake Louise. Overnight stops are in Kamloops, Quesnel, and Whistler (depending on the route). A benefit to taking the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada is the multiple options to choose for your train trip. Our Circle the Canadian Rockies by Train trip combines two Rocky Mountaineer journeys for an epic roundtrip train tour.
Difference in Service Levels
On the Rocky Mountaineer Colorado to Utah, there are two levels of service — SilverLeaf and SilverLeaf Plus. SilverLeaf Plus includes exclusive access to a separate lounge with upscale drinks and an elevated food experience. SilverLeaf Plus is only available on this USA route. There is no GoldLeaf class on Rocky Mountaineer train trips USA.
If you want to experience the ultimate in rail luxury in North America, you need to take a Rocky Mountaineer trip in GoldLeaf through Western Canada. GoldLeaf is the most luxurious service and includes a seat in a bi-level glass-dome car with oversized windows. GoldLeaf has a separate dining area on the lower level where you can enjoy your freshly prepared gourmet meals.
SilverLeaf class in Canada and USA is the same. SilverLeaf includes a seat in a single-level dome car with beautiful views. Regionally inspired meals and drinks are served at your seat.
Destinations
On Colorado Rocky Mountain train rides, you’ll see desert canyons, sandstone archways, rock formations, and the Colorado River.
In Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer takes you to Banff and Jasper national parks. You’ll travel through dramatic canyons and mountain passes, past rushing waterfalls and coastal rainforests. The Rocky Mountaineer train journeys in Canada are longer than those in the USA, meaning you have more time to relax and gaze at the ever-changing scenery.
Once you’ve arrived in the Canadian Rockies, there are many impressive sights to explore on day trips and excursions. Cruise on Maligne Lake in Jasper, tour the famous Icefields Parkway, ride the Banff Gondola, or have afternoon tea at Chateau Lake Louise. You could even experience a thrilling helicopter tour over ancient glaciers, towering peaks, and turquoise lakes.

Your Tour at a Glance
Tour Activity Level
The activity level for this tour:
You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.
You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.
You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.
You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer Balicha on an itinerary for Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria, Canada. From start to finish Jennifer was very polite and easy-going as well as professional. She offered suggestions when needed and and was on top of all itinerary adjustments and refunds. She kept me up-to-date on my clients progress while traveling and was very empathetic towards me and my client when handling itinerary snafu's along the way. Jennifer was great to work with and will definitely reach out to her again. Thanks Jennifer.....You're the BEST!!

Flightseeing over Vancouver & the Gulf Islands
A bird's-eye view of vancouver and the gulf islands by floatplane.
As far as geographical names go, British Columbia's scenic Gulf Islands can be a bit daunting. First of all, the more than 200 Gulf Islands are actually located not in a "gulf" but in the Strait of Georgia (which has nothing to do with the US state or the former Soviet republic), set between large Vancouver Island to the west, and the British Columbia mainland (where the city of Vancouver is situated) to the east. And to make things even more interesting, the islands include towns with names like Vesuvius and Ganges. But seeing these beautiful, pristine islands – home to many parks and protected areas – from the air is indeed a highlight of your flightseeing trip by floatplane from Vancouver's Coal Harbour that takes you aloft for a bird's-eye view of the city and environs.

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Canada. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website.
If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet site by clicking here .
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of Canada to determine what travel documentation is required.
Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.
We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for six months beyond the completion of your tour. In addition, we recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm). Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey.
Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences. Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage – General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc. For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or onboard The Canadian or in any of the hotels.
If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The CDC operates a 24-hour travelers' information number at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.
Several modes of transportation are used on this tour – motor coach, ferry, float plane and train. In general, this itinerary is recommended for those who have little if any difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or balancing onboard a moving train. Walking is also affected by weather conditions which do vary greatly and can involve snow, ice, and mud.
Regarding Wheelchairs - If you require a wheelchair while traveling, you must meet the specifications of each of the tour's suppliers including the motor coach, ferry, float plane and train. You may bring a collapsible, lightweight wheelchair on tour that weighs less than 100 lbs (45.4 kg), but you must be able to maneuver on and off the coach with limited assistance. We strongly recommend that if you require a wheelchair for travel or have moderate to severe difficulty walking that you bring a companion to assist you. Before you book this tour, you will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the wheelchair, including: size, model, and all components that accompany it to determine its motor coach storage capabilities.
Rocky Mountaineer has a lift to move between the upper level, where the dome car is located and the lower level, where the dining room is located.
Regarding Oxygen - If you require portable oxygen while traveling, you will be responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating health facilities on the tour route that can perform tank maintenance. If you choose to bring a tank on tour, you will need to provide us the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities. You may inquire about having them filled at a hospital in Vancouver, Banff or Jasper (there is no hospital in Lake Louise), but tank maintenance facilities are limited in the Canadian Rockies.

Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
You can view the reading list here.
The summer weather in the Canadian Rockies can change instantly and is often unpredictable as in any mountainous region. From June through early September, normal temperatures range from 50 to 80˚F (10 to 27˚C). However, the Canadian Rockies could experience some unusually warm weather (80 to 90˚F) (26 to 32˚C) during the summer months. Therefore, we suggest including some light warm weather clothing in your travel wardrobe. Conditions are often very local and can change radically from one valley to the next, or change during the course of the day. Due to its geographic location, Western Canada generally has long hours of daylight and in mid-summer the sun will rise as early as 5:00 a.m. and set as late as 10:00 p.m. In the early spring and fall, daylight hours average about 14 hours, from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Rainfall is greatest by the ocean in Vancouver and lighter in the interior portions of the Canadian Rockies.
To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .
What To Pack
When joining a Tauck journey, every guest is responsible for their own health and, in turn, the protection of their fellow travelers, the Tauck staff, our suppliers and the places we visit. As such, you are expected to follow local and supplier guidelines regarding face coverings, as explained by your Tauck Director. Our partners may have a limited supply of face coverings, gloves, and hand sanitizer, so please bring such personal items for your own comfort.
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. During the evenings some dining rooms require smart casual attire for dinner (no jeans) and some fine dining rooms recommend jackets for the gentlemen, but they are not required.
You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee at all the Fairmont Hotels on this itinerary.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.
We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- An optional jacket for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Hiking boots if you would like to hike on some of the more extensive trails
- Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
