  2. Browning FN Mauser hi power Safari grade rifle

    In early 1966 they apparently started the 5 digit serial numbers in the 30,000 range. Every gun I have seen from 1966-1968 had the year before the L and a SN between 35000 and 45999 (i.e. 8L45123). In 1969 and later production they all had the L and two digit date code at the end of the serial number (i.e. 64444L69).

    2654 posts · Joined 2013. #3 · Feb 8, 2017 (Edited) "Saltwwod" guns were generally bracketed from 1967-1973, with a higher percentage of production in the higher grades. Check carefully for any visual signs of salt. If unsure, have a qualified 'smith remove wood and inspect action to verify no saltwood exists.

  5. Browning FN High Power Safari Grade Date of Manufacture, 3 digit

    I took in trade a Browning FN High Power Safari Grade 30-06, Ser # L53x, and was hoping to get some help in dating it, from what I can tell it seems to be a 1st year production, 1969? Safari Grade? The metal is all good no rust, the ser # is in the barrel channel of the stock and matches the gun ser #. SHOOTER13 likes this.

    SHOOTER13 Guest. The Browning Safari Grade Bolt Action Rifles were made from 1959 to 1974. Browning had them made up at the FN plant in Belgium with premium FN Mauser actions and barrels. An article regarding the process of treating stock wood with a salt curing confirms this took place from 1966 to 1971.

    Actually, the serial numbers play in the salt wood problem because the serial numbers tell you the year of manufacture. Before 1965 and you are safe. You are likely,,,not absolutely,,,safe after 1972. Any Browning firearm with walnut stocks made after 1964 should be suspect, period.

    I have wanted a High Power Safari Grade for as long as I can remember. I finally found a salt free one in .300 H&H Magnum for under $1000 so I jumped on it. It is in excellent condition and has a Burris 3x9 scope in Weaver pivot mounts. I do plan on getting some better looking rings and will probably put a Leupold 6x42 scope on it. pacecars ...

P Fjestad: "During late 1966, Browning's salt wood problems began to emerge, and continued until 1972. Most experts have never seen a long tang salt gun, and therefore believe that almost 100% of the salt guns had short tangs."

  17. Help with dating a High Power Safari

    The serial number is five digits, then a space, and then L72, so it looks like: XXXXX L72 I've been looking at the table on page 2361 of this reference but it is very poorly worded so I cannot make enough sense of it to be 100% sure. It first says that between 1959 and 1962, there was no prefix (numeral-letter) before the serial number.
