Borneo – East Sabah Adventure Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Borneo – East Sabah Adventure

I had an awesome adventure, learnt a lot, was ‘very lucky’ to see alot of wildlife - including the proboscis monkey, crocodiles, orangutans, plenty of bird life, and also experienced the hatching of some green sea turtles. There is ‘No Guarantee’ on what animals you will see but on our tour we were ‘very lucky’ to have Albert who came through with the goods. Thank you Albert for making my first trip to Borneo East Sabah tour an unforgettable one. Thanks mate!!!!!!

I liked the tour a lot. Too many buffet meals however and never enough vegetarian choices. Got bitten by bed bugs in the jungle lodge.

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu Tour

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu

The itinerary did exactly as expected, showcased the highlights of Sabah. The additional activities exceeded expectations; tubing in Tambatuon village was fun for the range of ages amongst out group, on the night jungle walk in kinabatangan, we had the pleasure of strolling across an endangered tarsier. Our well-connected guide (Jerry) was actively involved in all activities and shared a wealth of knowledge, as a local. The connections Jerry has with the communities made us feel at home in Borneo. His professionalism and experience in mountain climbing made the Mt Kinabalu hike a personal highlight for me. A well-passed, humbling and spectacular adventure well worth taking.

Two comments 1. To add the Urang Hutan reservation in Kuching to the itinerary 2. The hotel in Bilit was not up to par, so if there are other options, it is worthwhile to check

Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.

The trip was really great! I didn't realize that I'd booked a private tour, which was kind of a surprise. The accommodations were really cool. The longhouse was my favorite! And the bat cave is AMAZING! All of the transportation was clean and air conditioned. The tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. My guide in Kota Kinabulu was the best! She introduced me to all of these really yummy snacks and told me about local traditions and her English was great! I would highly recommend the air conditioning option, it's really humid there and you do some physical activity and you'll be grateful for the upgrade. Also, bring toilet paper, because Malaysia doesn't really use it. The only thing I'd change is to stay at Sepilok for 2 days and Bilit for 1 day instead of the other way around. There isn't a lot to do at Bilit, just some scheduled boat rides and hikes, but Sepilok has a lot of cool places nearby and they have a pool. Spending a whole day doing almost nothing while having to set alarms for meal times wasn't really a great use of my time. Other than that, it was really great!

What people love about borneo tours.

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.
Really enjoyed everything about the Borneo trip, the guide, Gobert was fun, helpful and pleasant. I would recommend this tour.

HELLO, SABAH - BORNEO TOURS DESTINATION!!

Why borneo tours .

If you are looking for amazing adventures in Borneo, you have come searching at the right place.

BORNEO , a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago, is known for its beaches and biodiverse rainforest where thousands of wildlife called home. The Sabah region of Borneo is quite rugged and the third largest island in Asia isn’t much explored, but the tropical Sabah wildlife is some of the most diverse. Sabah, Borneo has so much more to offer to wildlife-seekers and adventure enthusiasts.

HIKE UP MOUNT KINABALU

A majestic mountain located at the West Coast Division of Sabah, Mount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountains in South East Asia standing at 4095.2 meters and has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status. First-time climbers are advised to consider staying at Kinabalu Park or a highland resort at Kundasang one night prior to the climb to acclimatize the high altitude. Take it up a notch with Mount Kinabalu Via Ferrata , which provides access to scenic sections of the mountains that are typically made available only to mountaineers. It is also known as the world’s highest and Asia’s first via ferrata. This challenging route offers both Walk the Torq and Low’s Peak Circuit packages fitting for both beginners and intermediate climbers respectively. If you are a thrill-seeker, this is should be one of the top things in your bucket list!

BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS

If climbing or hiking is not your thing, activities such as paragliding, white water rafting at Kiulu or Padas rivers, quad biking on the terrains, or even scuba diving and island hopping are among the few activities you can choose from. Explore beautiful islands where you can find the most beautiful corals and swim alongside sea turtles. Look no further than the Lankayan Dive Resort at Lankayan Island or the Sipadan Island, Mabul Island , Kapalai Island , Mataking Island and Pom Pom Island for your fun island adventures.

ICONIC BORNEO WILDLIFE

Moving on to the east coast of Sabah, here we can witness that Borneo is truly a land blessed with wonderful eco treasures – from scenic islands to wildlife encounters and nature treks. Moreover, there is an amazing array of endangered and endemic Borneo wildlife such as the Orang Utans , Proboscis Monkeys, Bornean Sun Bear, sea turtles, and Bornean Pygmy Elephants .

Take a one day trip and learn more about these animals at Sepilok , Sun Bear Conservation Center , Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary , and Gomantong Cave . Selingan Island turtle hatcheries area also not to be missed if you are keen on witnessing turtles hatching and baby sea turtles being released back into the sea. Or opt to stay overnight at Kinabatangan River which is called the longest river in Sabah Borneo. This river is known as one of the most exciting and easily accessible places to explore the rich biodiversity of Sabah. Go on river safaris and night walks around the resort for wildlife spotting, even though wildlife spotting is not guaranteed but you will be assured of a nice escape from the busy city. Depending on your budget, you can choose to stay between Sukau, Bilit or Abai , these lodges are all located along the Kinabatangan River.

ANCIENT RAINFOREST

Looking for a nice getaway at one of Borneo Forest Reserve? Danum Valley Conservation Center’s Borneo Rainforest lodge and Tabin Wildlife Reserve are one of our top picks. These lodges provide a nice combination of luxury and wildlife spotting. Both lodges offer a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy the nice outdoors. The mud volcano at Tabin is one not to be missed. If you are keen to get off the tourist tracks to spot for wildlife, take a few days overnight trip to Deramakot Forest Reserve or Danum Valley Field Center. Even though the lodging is simple but it will leave you with an unforgettable experience.

CULTURAL RICHES

Not too keen on all the adventures? No fret, Borneo has something for everyone. Why not come and learn about the cultures and traditions of the natives living in Sabah with us. We’ll take you on a trip to Mari-Mari Cultural Village , Rungus longhouse, War memorial park, and even places as far as the Tip of Borneo where you will hear stories of local people that were passed down from generations to generations.

The best things in life are the people you love and the memories you make, this part of Borneo will definitely leave you with memories that last a lifetime!

Tailor-Made Borneo Holidays

Incredible creatures, rainforest conservation... then bask on those beaches

Feefo logo

Borneo Holidays

Wherever else you've been lucky enough to travel, there's nothing quite like a holiday in Borneo. The superstar wildlife in this rainforest paradise will knock your leech-socks off, and the opportunities for adventure will have you gleefully stepping out of your comfort zone! To top it all off, there’s the superb snorkelling, beautiful beaches, and wildlife-focused resorts that stand in a class of their own.

Wildlife watching & conservation sites

In Borneo, we can get you conscientiously close to some of the world's most thrilling wildlife in its natural habitat. You can head into the Danum Valley and Tabin conservation areas, which offer sanctuary to Bornean orangutans, gibbons, sun bears, wildcats, and the rarely seen pygmy elephant, clouded leopard and Bornean rhinoceros. Rainforest lodges offer accommodation deep in the jungle, with expert rangers on hand to help you spot the animals. Boat trips along the Kinabatangan River also offer great wildlife opportunities, plus the chance to visit tribal villages and join in their reforestation efforts. We also enjoy visiting ethical orangutan rehabilitation centres for an insight into the challenges faced by those who depend on the jungle.

Orangutan

Paradise beaches & island snorkelling

Even on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu , the capital of Sabah state, there are stunning beaches with clean white sand, warm tranquil waters and luxurious resorts. Head offshore, and you’ll find idyllic tropical islands, marine parks protecting turtles and many other exciting species, and responsible resorts that combine conservation with just the right level of luxury. We particularly enjoy snorkelling around Gaya Island , where the protected waters throng with colourful marine life, and resort guests can help out at a coral reef restoration nursery.

Beach at sunset in Borneo

Spend time with Iban tribes

The Iban people (a name encompassing Borneo's indigenous groups) have thrived within the island's habitats for thousands of years. They still uphold many traditional ways of life, albeit whilst sporting football shirts and enjoying a spot of karaoke. The most authentic tribal longhouses are now built of concrete (a few old-style wooden ones are kept for show) but their communal approach to living persists, with a number of families living in each longhouse and sharing resources. You can stay in a longhouse for a couple of nights, joining the tribespeople on their daily activities, and even camping in the rainforest if you’re feeling particularly adventurous!

Iban tribes

Caves, mountains & trekking

Malaysia’s highest mountain, one of the largest cave systems in the world, thrilling treks deep into the rainforest — Malay Borneo offers some excellent opportunities for light adventure, most of which can be tailored to your ability level. Many walking trails criss-cross UNESCO World Heritage site Kinabalu National Park , ranging from an hour or two along a river valley to the strenuous overnight climb to the peak of Mount Kinabalu itself. You can embark on adventurous hikes into the Maliau Basin , sleeping overnight at research camps, or perhaps you’d rather venture underground into the Mulu caves , one of which is the largest known cave chamber in the world.

The climate is typically tropical with temperature ranging from a cool 22°C (72°F) in the evenings to a sultry 34°C (93°F) in the daytime.

Sarawak receives an abundance of rainfall (averaging 200-250 cm a year); the rainy season is normally during the 'landas', a local term for the monsoon rains that come between November and February each year. Sabah is less wet than Sarawak and because it lies just below the typhoon belt, it is often known as "the land below the wind".

The monsoon period should not deter visitors to the region as it is not cold; in fact the rains during this time may be heavy but it is intermittent and they bring respite from the tropical heat. This is also the time of the year when the local tropical fruits unique to the region are in abundance.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Malaysia though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is prevalent in parts of Borneo, therefore we strongly suggest that you visit your GP to discuss your personal requirements. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Borneo, Malaysia the unit of currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR).

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Borneo, Malaysia is a multicultural but predominantly Islamic country. You should respect local traditions, customs and religions. Shoulders and legs should be covered when visiting temples and other important religious sites.

Ladies should dress modestly in the towns and cities, this means avoid wearing shorts and tank tops. When you’re outside of the towns and cities you can wear normal summer clothes. If your trip includes spending time at hotels resorts the dress code is more relaxed.    Men can wear normal summer clothes all the time.

As you can imagine the humidity is very high here, so be prepared. When you’re exploring national parks, light weight natural fabrics work best and pack long trousers and long sleeved shirts to help keep the bugs away.

Language & Religion

The official language is  Malay  although English is also widely spoken and understood. Mandarin and Tamil are the other two main languages, alongside a multitude of other less widely spoken languages representing smaller ethnic groups.

More than half of the population (52%) follows Islam. Other religions followed in Malaysia are Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Sikhism. In addition, Shamanism is practiced in East Malaysia.

Time

Borneo is 8 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

In Borneo forget potatoes – rice (nasa) and noodles (mee) rule in this region. Rice is either steamed or fried, and noodles can be made from wheat, wheat and egg, rice or mung beans, and are used in a bewildering number of dishes either fried or boiled. Malays like their fish fried (ikan) whole and stuffed with spices or chopped into chunks or steaks and served with a spicy (tamarind) sauce. In Malaysian Borneo in particular, hinava (raw fish marinated with lime juice and herbs) is very popular.

Apart from fish, chicken (ayam) is possibly the most consumed meat in the region. Beef (daging lembu) and mutton (daging kambing, which also refers to lamb as well as kid and goat) are common in Malay dishes too. Chilli of course, features heavily. Fruit is usually the desert, served raw and presented on platters while alcohol is readily available all over.

On a clear day, you might spot majestic Mount Kinabalu in the distance. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll continue to the Poring Hot Spring for a canopy walk. Then, as dusk sets, we’ll hop back on the boat for the best vantage point to watch flickering fireflies light up the riverbanks.

Where is Malaysian Borneo? Sitting in South East Asia and part of the Indonesian archipelago, Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea, the Java Sea and the Celebes Sea. It’s the world’s third largest island and the only one that’s shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The island’s Malaysian states are Sabah and Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur is under three hours away by air.

Kota Kinabalu Known locally as KK, Kota Kinabalu is the coastal capital of Sabah and gateway to your inland wildlife adventures. Much of it was destroyed in the 1940s Japanese invasion and although there are a few colonial buildings left, it’s here you'll find glinting shopping malls and a sizzling street food and night market scene. Hip restaurants, cool coffee houses and sunset views from the beach make this a vibrant capital and a great place from which to boat hop across to the islands that make up Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Gaya Island Located within Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a 20 minute speedboat transfer from Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Island balances natural beauty and marine conservation with luxury touches and plenty of watersports. It’s a feet-in-the-sands escape fringed by crystal clear waters and thriving coral reef that are a paradise for snorkellers and divers. Stay at eco-friendly Gaya Island Resort and you can snorkel with resident marine biologists, follow naturalists out on the proboscis monkey jungle trail and dine with Mount Kinabalu views.

Kinabalu Park Shadowed by the revered Mount Kinabalu, one of South East Asia’s highest mountains, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu Park boasts an incredible bio-diversity. Here naturalists can attempt to spot thousands of varieties of flora and half of all Malaysia’s bird, mammal and amphibian species – it may take a while though. Adventure seekers descend on the park to climb Kinabalu, bathe in the Poring Hot Springs, explore the tropical rainforest, trek to the Langanan and Kipungit waterfalls and visit the nearby butterfly farm to witness just some of the 850 varieties that flutter throughout the forest.

Danum Valley Danum Valley is one of southern Sabah’s most spectacular attractions and comes with a spine-tingling diversity and abundance of wildlife. Its dense and steamy 130-million-year-old virgin rainforest is one of the best places to spot Bornean orangutans and the elusive clouded leopard. You’ll likely see red leaf monkeys, Asian paradise flycatchers and flying squirrels on morning treks and treetop canopy walks, keeping in mind this is their natural habitat and you never know when they’ll be making an appearance.

Wildlife The highly intelligent orangutan is Borneo’s most eminent species and, either on trek into the jungle or a visit to Borneo’s various sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres, you are sure to come eye to doleful eye with one of these endearing yet endangered creatures. In the past 50 years the number of orang-utans in the wild has declined alarmingly due to the loss of habitat caused by illegal logging and the conversion of land to agricultural use, hunting, and human conflict.

I went on the Kampung local bike tour and had an amazing time! Great sights, cultural experience and local food! Ask for Farhah and u will be well taken care of! She is a rare gem of a guide with a wealth of local knowledge and a pleasure to hang out with.

Another wonderful cycle trip around Kuching with the very impressive Farhah. She made the trip as the guides do. She was knowledgeable, friendly, competent and made our half day very memorable. My second trip with this company; I learnt more than before. To have a local, passionate about Sarawak and her culture is priceless. Bikes were good and temp super. Finding hidden gems and eating with locals , made the experience special. Thank you Farhar and thank you to all.

A very well curated trip planned by Paradesa, we did multi day trip with them which included cycling, speed hiking & kayaking. This was all inclusive trip with some great home stays & amazing home cooked food & wine’s.

It was a great holiday thanks to the planning & efforts of Paradesa and more importantly Farah & Lester during the trip. Farah is very knowledgeable about this region & thanks to her network of friends we had such a blast..

Will always fondly remember this experience!

TripAdvisor, January 2023

We had a great morning out riding seeing the city. We received great service, had a very friendly guide who was extremely accommodating with our young family. Would highly recommend.

Tripadvisor, june 2023.

This is my second trip to Kuching and my second time booking day trips with Paradesa and they did not disappoint. On this trip, I had my 8 year old and my 70++ parents with me and we did the Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary & Annah Rais Longhouse Day trip and the Wetlands Cruise. On each occasion, the guides assigned were helpful, informative and attentive to our varying needs (young and elderly both taken care of).

CanadianTraveler23

I went on a great walking food tour with Delilah, who was an excellent guide. In addition to eating all manner of interesting goodies, from restaurants, street vendors and hawker courts, Delilah gave us a great historical and cultural look at Kuching too. Highly recommended. Skip breakfast and come empty!

Anke Derks ⎥ August 2019

Google my business.

No need to have a big breakfast before you go, because you will eat plenty of food during the tour and enough water is provided. We both eat vegetarian and also that was well taken care of. Kelvin is a great tour guide. He knows a lot and could answer almost all our questions.

Book your holiday to Borneo with Wendy Wu Tours

Home to some of the world’s richest ecosystems, the island of Borneo is split between three countries – Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Sabah and Sarawak are the two states that make up Malaysian Borneo and they are packed to bursting with culture, wildlife, jungle and beaches. As captivating a destination as Borneo is, it remains wonderfully off-the-beaten-track meaning that it has managed to remain relatively pristine.

You can enjoy the cosmopolitan charms of the cities of Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, relax on the softest white sand, explore easily accessible tracts of virgin rainforest, discover the world’s largest caves and meet the ‘old men of the forest’ – orangutans. On top of all this Borneo is home to half of all the known plant and animal species in the world and to a fascinating ancient tribal culture (Headhunters anyone?) that is still very much alive. For a truly memorable adventure, Borneo is the place to go!

Embark on an exciting two-day trek to the top of Mt. Kinabalu and watch the fascinating changes in ecosystems, flora and fauna as you make your way up this imposing 4,000 metre-high mountain. Experience the feeling of being above the clouds at the summit.

Part of a 130 million-year-old rainforest, the Danum Valley Conservation Area is home to an astounding variety of animals, avifauna and plants. Set out on a canopy walk high above the trees and take in the sights and sounds of the forest. Gibbons, orangutans, pygmy elephants and some of Malaysia’s rarest bird species call this home. Little wonder that Borneo family holidays are a favourite pick among kids and adults alike.

Head to Lankayan Island or Sipadan Island to see the wonders off the coast of Borneo. With whale sharks, green turtles and colonies of brilliantly coloured fishes giving you company, it’s a whole new world out there.

Borneo Tours & Travel

Borneo Attractions & Landmarks Guide

The world’s third largest island, Borneo harbors half of the world’s known animal and plant species in its abundant rainforests , on its mountains and along its beach-rich shorelines. Split among East Malaysia , Indonesia and the country of Brunei, Borneo is home to orangutans, tropical birds, pygmy elephants, sea turtles, and an abundance of flowering vegetation.

Mt. Kinabula , the island’s highest peak and popular with climbers, is in East Malaysia’s Sabah province.

What is Borneo famous for? (& How to see Orangutans in Borneo)

Known for its lush rainforests and rich marine biodiversity, Borneo is a hiker and swimmer’s paradise. Onshore, travelers frequently explore Kinabalu National Park, which lies at the base of the mountain for which it is named. As the highest peak in Malaysia , climbing Mt. Kinabulu is a popular desire for many tourists.

Because of its UNESCO World Heritage Site stature, the travelers who are actually able to accomplish this goal are few and fortunate, as guided tours of the peak need to be arranged months in advance. For those who cannot climb the mountain (and those who want to rest afterward), stepping into the waterways of the Poring Hot Springs is a simple way to relax while traveling.

Other travelers may be more interested in visiting Gunung Mulu National Park, where the famous Deer Cave and Garden of Eden may be explored. The “garden” is actually a valley and waterfall hidden within the cave system but is breathtaking nonetheless.

Outside the national parks, travelers can interact with orangutans in one of their last remaining sanctuaries, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here, the nearly 80 orangutans (some rescued, others born in the center) live with their families and researchers, who work to understand them in their natural habitat.

Their Proboscis monkey counterparts live in similar comfort at the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. These monkeys are only found in Borneo, making a visit to their home all the more necessary when traveling here. Offshore, travelers can “island-hop” between five different and unique landmasses that constitute Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

For those looking to get into the water, diving near Sipadan Island will reward travelers with up close and personal views of sea turtles, tropical fish, and other rare marine life.

Wildlife in Borneo

As a tropical island that countless species of animals and plants call home, wildlife in Borneo is sure to make an appearance during guided tours in the sea or on land. The Borneo orangutan is Asia’s only species of ape and can be found most often at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

Given the orangutan and Proboscis monkey species’ relative obscurity in the wild, travelers will be more likely to see Rhinoceros or Wreathed hornbills flying above, along with numerous other, smaller, tropical birds. Be careful not to step on a Rafflesia (corpse) flower!

Along South Pacific shorelines, travelers may spot pygmy elephants, whose small stature may be unexpected, but unforgettable nonetheless. During guided night-hikes, the critically endangered clouded leopard and bay cat may be seen watching from afar, along with the bright eyes of slow lorises or Western tarsiers in bushes.

Under the waves, travelers will encounter green or hawksbill sea turtles, eels, and countless other tropical fish whose colors rival the coral reefs they hide within.

Best way to see Borneo

Borneo’s status as an island means that travelers will have to enter the country by air unless they opt for a cruise from a nearby country or city. Unfortunately, there are few internal flights, making travel by boat or car the most viable option when traveling between tour locations in Borneo. Guided tours will have travel details aligned with the easiest times to traverse the lush rainforests that run alongside the Batang Ai and Rejang rivers.

The options for speed-boats, native long-boats or luxurious river boats vary based on the tour company, as their availability depends on the weather, and sometimes the tribal land that travelers will pass through.

Disembarking at the shores of villages or cities will provide travelers the opportunities to stay in homestays, which support local communities and provide for authentic, personalized experiences. Other travelers may speak with tour guides regarding all-terrain or regular bike rentals, which can be a leisurely way to explore the cities Kota Kinabulu, Bandar Seri Begawan, or Banjarmasin.

Outdoor travel activities in Borneo

Outdoor travel activities in Borneo are expansive. In the various national parks, bird-watching and observing the monkeys or orangutans in their sanctuaries is encouraged. Caving is a common activity at Gunung Mulu National Park, where guided tours will give travelers the opportunities to explore relatively obscure cave-systems.

For the adventurous travelers who also plan ahead, climbing Mount Kinabalu is a highly sought after activity, as only 135 hiking permits are issued per day. Speaking to tour companies about the waiting period for the summit is important before booking in order to ensure its availability. If the mountain is unavailable, these same travelers may also be interested in high-speed white water rafting down the Kiulu or Padas rivers.

Near Sipadan Island, divers will be rewarded with close encounters with various marine life as it peacefully exists in coral reefs. From the air, travelers can paraglide or zipline. Travelers can even zipline between the islands of Sapi and Gaya, a staggering distance of 250 meters (820 feet) above open water.

National Parks in Borneo

Borneo’s growing popularity in the international travel community is largely a result of increased knowledge of the famous natural landmarks which its national parks host. Beyond protecting the highest peak in Malaysia, Kinabalu National Park also boasts hot springs, exclusive orchid, wild cat, and shrew species, and tea gardens.

While it is not as high (or as exclusive) as its counterpart, travelers in Kubah National Park can hike Mount Serapi. Should hiking be too strenuous, travelers can interact with orangutans at the Matang Wildlife Centre. Rivaling Kubah National Park is Gunung Mulu National Park, famously known for its extensive cave systems and stark cliff sides.

Inside the caves, travelers will encounter various species of bats, insects, and flowers. In the surrounding rainforest, hornbills fly overhead as monkeys and orangutans hop in the trees. Fortunate travelers may also see the critically endangered pangolin.

As opposed to the other contiguous national parks of Borneo, Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is unique in how it is made-up of five different islands. While diving and snorkeling are popular activities in this park, travelers can also zipline between Sapi and Gaya islands and hike the nature trails on each island.

At Turtle Islands Marine Park, travelers can observe hawksbill or green sea turtles in their natural habit and witness babies make their first journeys to the ocean.

How many days do you need in Borneo?

As the third-largest island in the world, Borneo cannot be adequately explored without at least a week to do so. Because of its size and relative lack of internal flights, it is imperative for travelers to consider the extended amount of time that will be spent on traveling when booking a guided tour.

However, a week provides travelers with the “basics” of Borneo, as summits of Mount Kinabalu and Serapi may be reached, but their surrounding hot-springs or conservatories may be postponed until next time.

In the same way, travelers may opt to spend most of their time observing orangutans and Proboscis monkeys in their natural habitats, rather than hiking or snorkeling. Depending upon traveler preferences and tour availability, it is possible for travelers to effectively explore the most popular sites of Borneo in a week.

Selamat datang! Welcome to Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is an intriguing city located between the Borneo jungle and the South China Sea. Having survived WWII bombings, KK (as it's commonly known) has a charm unique to the frontier town. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 5 pm at your hotel. Here you will meet your leader and fellow family travellers. Following the meeting, perhaps head out with your fellow families to the waterfront market. Here you’ll find smoky stalls serving up grilled meat and fish and heaps of local delicacies. If you arrive with significant time before the welcome meeting, you can immerse yourself in history at the Sabah State Museum or explore the islands off Kota Kinabalu which are excellent for swimming or snorkelling.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information for each member of your family. Head to the Poring Hot Springs to enjoy a scenic canopy walk and relaxing swim in the springs themselves, which the kids will love. The entrance to the hot pools themselves is optional as there are a few pools to choose from. Parents and older children may enjoy the hot pools while younger children will prefer the slide pool. You get to choose on the day.

Tonight you will spend the night in a reconstructed longhouse on the tea plantation. Rooms are twin/triple-share and have fans and shared bathrooms.

This morning we visit a Sabah Tea Factory and learn the process of tea leaves before saying goodbye to the mountain and heading into the jungle. Travel by private bus to Batu Puteh, a small village on the banks of the Kinabatangan River (approximately 5 hours). Your hosts for the night are the local community-run conservation organization KOPEL whose aim is to provide villagers with the means of making a sustainable living from the forest. KOPEL are responsible for a reforestation project in which the community are actively involved in growing seedlings and replanting back degraded forested areas. Arrive in the afternoon meet your hosts and learn a little more about KOPELs work, before jumping in a boat and heading upriver to your accommodation in the jungle (approximately 30 minutes). This afternoon, you’ll head out on a sunset cruise up the river in search of wildlife, including macaques, wild orangutan and proboscis monkeys. Be prepared for an adventure! Return to your jungle camp by an oxbow lake, freshen up for dinner and afterwards, let the cicadas sing you to sleep.

  • Kinabatangan Eco Camp or similar (1 night)
  • Kinabatangan River - Afternoon Wildlife Cruise
  • Sabah Tea Plantation - Tea factory tour

For some departures throughout the year we will only spend 1 night in the Eco Camp and 1 night in the Village in accommodation with attached bathrooms due to availability.

You'll pack an overnight bag for the jungle camp and leave your main luggage at the KOPEL office. Stay in the jungle in a simple hut with basic facilities, including mosquito nets and cold bathing. You’ll be in deep jungle, so as not to disturb the wildlife, there is solar power electricity at the camp. A torch, insect repellent and rain jacket are essential for tonight. Boots and leech socks are available for rent for the jungle night walk.

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle ready for a busy day. After breakfast you’ll head upriver to the village where you take a walk around the village to learn more about the life of the local people. For lunch, it’s all hands-on deck as you partake in a fun traditional cooking class, eating the fruits of your labour for lunch! The afternoon is free to relax, enjoy some boardgames or keep spotting wildlife, before heading back on the boat for another trip on the river. After dinner tonight, you’ll don headtorches and head out into the jungle for a night walk in search of insects and nocturnal animals. See what happens to the jungle at night, and what creatures come out to play!

Say goodbye to your Eco Camp and take a drive to Sandakan. On arrival, you will notice the strong Cantonese influence, seen in the lively harborside market, the many Chinese temples and the local cuisine. Here there is free time to catch up on your essentials, like laundry and banking, as well as to explore the city. Otherwise, just spend some time relaxing by the pool!

  • Sabah Hotel or similar (1 night)

While wildlife viewing is a big part of many itineraries, we strive to view animals with the greatest level of respect. We ask all Intrepid travellers to avoid visiting Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary as it no longer meets our Animal Welfare Policy. Please refer to the ‘Responsible Travel’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Today is an exciting day and a favourite with the kids – here come the orangutans! It’s a 45-minute drive by minibus to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The centre was set up to help re-introduce these wonderful creatures back into the wild after a life of domestication or having been orphaned. From the viewing platform, you can see these charming creatures as they swing into view and eat a supplementary balanced diet of fruit, vegetables or milk, laid out for them twice a day. Human contact must be kept to a minimum and it's essential that you follow the instructions of the park, as directed by your leader, but you are free to snap plenty of photographs. You will also have the privilege of viewing a nursery where you can view young orangutans as they learn how to climb on a specially constructed jungle gym. The viewing area is behind one-way glass so as not to disturb the animals.

Heading back to Sandakan you will have the afternoon free.

  • Sabah Hotel or similiar (1 night)
  • Sepilok - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
  • Sepilok - Sun Bear Conservation Centre - MYR50

Leave your large bags at the hotel and transfer to a nearby jetty, then board a speedboat bound for Turtle Island. Travel past small fishing villages and bamboo fish traps, arriving at Turtle Island Marine Park after about an hour. The rest of the day is free for you to soak up the island life. Relax on the beach and take a swim or perhaps hire some snorkelling gear and investigate the underwater world. Under the cover of darkness, watch as giant green turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs under the moonlight. Witness the island researchers release protected hatchlings and guide them in their frantic dash to the ocean. It's a moving experience that is bound to be rewarding for you and your family, but please be aware that this is a very delicate environment and you must follow instructions from your leader and the local rangers to ensure minimal impact on the turtles. Spend the night on this beautiful island – even though the accommodation is quite basic, this will be a memorable experience.

  • Chalet (1 night)
  • Turtle Island - Turtle Night Nesting viewing
  • Turtle Island - Turtle Nest Adoption Program - MYR150

The accommodation on Turtle Island is very basic. Additionally, tonight may be a late night for your children as sometimes the nesting turtles don't come to the beach until after 10 pm. You will wait together in the dining hall until your group is called by the rangers. We recommend bringing games, cards, art supplies, or other items to keep your children entertained.

Artificial light can disrupt the natural behaviour of female turtles and their young hatchlings. To avoid disturbing the turtles, we encourage you to bring red-light headlamps to witness the full experience.

November – February is monsoon season in Borneo, and the journey to Turtle Island can get rough. On rare occasions, we may need to alter your itinerary if the boat journey becomes too dangerous or is cancelled.

Today you will transfer back to the mainland. Once back in Sandakan the group will have the opportunity to visit the War Memorial before heading to the airport and for your flight back to Kota Kinabalu (approximately 1 hour). Keep in mind that the luggage allowance for this flight is only 15 kg, and any excess baggage may incur a further charge. Back at your hotel in Kota Kinabalu you will have time to relax before heading out for a last night optional dinner.

  • Sandakan - War Memorial

With no activities planned for today, you and your family are free to depart the accommodation at any time following check-out.

8 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners

Bus, Minibus, Plane

Important notes.

01. Please note that these trips are for adults and children travelling together and there must be at least one child under 18 with you. 02. Minimum age for children on this trip is 5 years old. 03. A discount of 10% applies on this trip to children 17 years and under at time of travel. 04. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Days 02 (Sabah Tea Garden) , Days 3 & 4 (Jungle Camp) and Day 7 (Turtle Island) where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information. 05. For some departures throughout the year we will only spend 1 night in the Eco Camp and 1 night in the Village in accommodation with attached bathrooms due to availability. 06. Borneo is a tropical country so rain can be expected at any time. The wet period in Borneo runs from November to February. Temperatures remain fairly constant year round with averages of 27-32°C/80-89°F and relative humidity of around 80%. Consider bringing a portable small neck fan with you to keep you and your family cool. November to February is monsoon season for Selingan (Turtle Island) so if travelling during this time you should expect big waves and choppy seas. In cases of extreme weather, the trip to Selingan may be cancelled and alternative arrangements made.  07. Many hotels outside of the big cities of Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan have been built so travellers can enjoy the countryside, forest/mountain views, where people can wake up to nature sounds not cars. Many of the hotels we use are in such locations and can be quite remote. So access to restaurants are limited. 08. Borneo’s food is known for being fairly mild, with high reliance on fresh fruit and vegetables. The cuisine is a mix of Thai, Malay and Indian. Cuisine staples include grilled fish, barbecued prawns, fried rice, noodles, and local vegetables seasoned with garlic, ginger, and rich sauces. Fish and chicken based soups with noodles cooked in a hot clay pot are very traditional. 09. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest information on travelling in Eastern Sabah before your departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas of your itinerary. • About Borneo

A mecca for adventurers and nature lovers, Borneo’s landscape is flush with some of the world’s oldest rainforests. This ecological playground is divided among three countries: Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. Visitors to these parts will unearth a treasure trove of nature-based experiences during their travels. One moment you may be trekking through dense jungle in Kalimantan, and the next you’ll be cruising through the floating village in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Don’t miss these Borneo attractions

  • Walking among the orangutans in Sabah and Sarawak
  • Mount Kinabalu
  • Iban Longhouse in Sarawak
  • Turtle watching in Turtle Islands National Park
  • Kampong Ayer floating village

The treasures of Sabah and Sarawak

Sabah and Sarawak are so rich in ecological jewels that it’s not easy deciding on where to start your journey but most visitors flock to these Malaysian states to walk among the orangutans. Sabah’s Sepilok and Sarawak’s Semengoh are home to the two famous rehabilitant centres where you can see the orangutans feed and swing from vine to vine.

In Sabah, you can climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia , travel to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, and enjoy turtle watching at Turtle Islands National Park. Alternatively, Sarawak is brimming with national parks and its capital, Kuching, has enough temples, attractions and markets to keep you occupied for days.

Nature and more

Brunei may be tiny in comparison to its island counterparts, but its gems sure pack a punch. A largely Islamic state, it’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan is graced with the sultan’s palace and a sprinkling of magnificent mosques. Bandar is also home to the floating village of Kampong Ayer.

Indonesia’s Kalimantan covers the central and southern regions of Borneo. Its riches are hidden beneath a vast and incredibly biodiverse rainforest. You can visit the floating market in Banjarmasin, and divers will love the underwater treasures of the Berau Archipelago.

Useful information for planning your holiday in Borneo

With a strong mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, Borneo’s culinary dishes are best appreciated in the street-food markets of Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. Dishes range from tandoori-spiced kebabs to Chinese-inspired prawn fritters. A particular speciality is laksa, a fragrant coconut milk noodle soup.

A guided street food tour is a good way to try some of the best Borneo cuisine, or for a more in-depth look, we could arrange a cooking lesson with a local family .

For the latest travel advice for Borneo, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office website .

Bahasa Malaysia, often simply referred to as Malay, is the official language of Malaysia, but English is widely spoken. Other languages you’re likely to hear are Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Iban, and other indigenous dialects.

The currency in Malaysian Borneo is the Malaysian ringgit (RM).

One of Borneo’s key experiences is wildlife spotting. You can travel by boat along the Kinabatangan River looking for proboscis monkeys and rare pygmy elephants. Or, you can head deep into one of its many national parks to search for wild orangutans. It’s also an island suited to active adventures, from jungle hikes to a two-day climb up Mount Kinabalu , a 4,095 m (13,435 ft) peak that juts up from the north of the island.

While the natural world is often the focus, there are plenty of opportunities to experience Borneo’s cultural side, too. You could stay in a longhouse as a guest of the Iban people, take a street-food tour of Kuching, or stay in a family home in Bako National Park . You can read about these experiences in more detail in our highlights guide to Borneo .

If you only choose one place to visit in Borneo, it’s hard to beat the Kinabatangan River, a forested sanctuary of oxbow lakes, rainforest, and mangroves. A cruise here will showcase the best of the island’s wildlife. This pairs well with a stay at Sandakan , a town which hosts three sanctuaries that showcase Borneo’s rich ecosystems: Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

To dive deeper into the rainforest, Mulu National Park hosts some of the world’s largest bat populations in its cathedral-like caverns. Danum Valley offers an exclusive jungle experience in comfort, while Deramakot Forest Reserve is a remote scientific research station well off the tourist trail. Our specialists can help you choose the places to go in Borneo that suit you best, but as a starter, you can read more about these destinations here .

The easiest way to see orangutans in Borneo is to visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you’ll encounter rescued youngsters and adults at close quarters as they come to feed at large wooden platforms set into the forest. As part of your visit, there’s an exhibition and video that explains the orangutans’ lifestyle, and the best part — a viewing room in the nursery where you can see babies fling themselves enthusiastically around a rope playground.

However, there’s something very special about seeing an orangutan in the wild, and arguably the best way to see orangutans in Borneo is in one of the national parks, including Danum Valley, Tabin Wildlife Reserve, and Deramakot Forest Reserve.

We’ve created a sample itinerary focused around some of Borneo’s best orangutan-spotting experiences, while Borneo specialist Sophie writes in more detail about the best ways to spot orangutans in our orangutan guide .

Borneo is home to a long list of other wildlife including sun bears, multiple species of crocodile, and enough bird species to fill entire guidebooks. Some animals, including proboscis monkeys, with their bulbous noses, hornbills, and flying squirrels are relatively easy to spot.

Others, including clouded leopards, Sumatran rhinos, and Borneo bay cats, are much harder to spot, and you’ll need the help of an experienced wildlife guide to stand the best chance of a sighting. The World Land Trust estimates that there are between 1,000 and 1,600 Bornean pygmy elephants left, which you’re most likely to see by the banks of the Kinabatangan River.

The waters that surround the island are also rich in life, including green and hawksbill turtles, soft corals, and rare Borneo sharks, a shy species that rarely grow longer than 70 cm (2 ft).

While you’re exploring the wilds of Borneo, you’ll usually stay in lodges set among the trees or stilted over the river. They have their own experienced wildlife guides who’ll help you explore the surrounding area. For a more immersive cultural experience you can stay in an Iban longhouse as a guest of the local community, or in a homestay in a Malay fishing village.

To relax, there are a number of beach resorts near the town of Kota Kinabalu, or you could stay on Gaya Island , a jungle-covered island off the island’s north coast, which is home to a small selection of secluded beach escapes. Our specialists have hand-picked some of the best places to stay in Borneo on our accommodation page .

You should try to book your trip to Borneo around 6 to 12 months in advance, particularly if you're planning to visit during the busiest (and less rainy) period between June and September. The best wildlife lodges and riverside retreats book up early, especially along the Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley.

If you'd like to avoid the busy season, our specialists can suggest the best times and places to visit away from the crowds, giving you an even more intimate wildlife-spotting experience.

You can’t fly direct to Borneo from the UK, but there are regular connections to Kuching via Singapore, which takes around 15 hours.

The time zone in Borneo is GMT +8.

The best way to travel around Borneo depends where you are. To cross the vast swathes of jungle and farmland, domestic flights are ideal, especially if you’re visiting Danum Valley or Deramakot Forest Reserve . If you’re exploring the Kinabatangan River, boats are your only option. Around the towns and cities, we can arrange for a private car, although most places are small enough to explore on foot.

UK passport holders don’t need a visa to enter Borneo if you’re staying less than 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of your departure from Borneo and have at least one blank page. If you’re not a UK passport holder, you can check the visa requirements here .

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for Borneo, but we recommend you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the Travel Health Pro website .

There isn’t a risk of yellow fever in Borneo, but you’ll need to carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from any countries where there is a risk, including if you’ve transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country at risk of yellow fever.

Martin Lewis and an easyJet plane

Anyone planning to fly abroad next year could bag themselves incredible easyJet deals with the help of Martin Lewis .

The Money Saving Expert issued a travel warning to his followers on X (formerly Twitter), to remind holidaymakers to stay on top of the latest flight deals and packages to hopefully save some cash in the process.

In a tweet discussing the new flights and package holidays for 2025, Martin explained: ‘Bagging them the moment they launch (browser refreshing type thing) is often (no guarantee) the way to get them at the cheapest possible rate.

He added: ‘Flights can rise by £100s even after a couple of hours of launch morning. So if you’re going to book, try early.’

Martin also told his followers to be aware about how the airline lists its prices. He wrote: ‘P.S. Cheapest possible, doesn’t necessarily mean cheap, do check what a decent rate is before booking.’

On Tuesday (May 21), the airline launched flights for March to June 2025 to give travellers a chance to plan their spring and summer getaways well in advance.  And it’s never too soon to start planning!

The consumer champion also responded to questions from his followers about how the airline manages pricing. X user @AshValeCommuter wrote: ‘Don’t easyJet prices go up and down? Buying as soon as they’re released doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be the cheapest (in my experience, anyway).’

Martin agreed and explained how prices change depending on demand. ‘Yes they do its demand pricing, but often lowest demand is at launch – based on our research – chance it dropping later is tough to predict,’ he tweeted in response. ‘Locking in at launch is more certain.’

The easyJet website has been updated with the option to book a trip for next summer. There are also package holidays which can be booked right now with a £60 deposit per person and the option to pay for the holiday in instalments without any added fees.

City break locales include Amsterdam , Paris and Barcelona while those craving a beach getaway can pick from Majorca , Turkey , Crete , Egypt and Portugal . There are a lot more locations available – 2,886 to be exact.

If package holidays aren’t your thing, you can still book flights for departures up to 15 June 2025, including 108 hotspots including Milan , Naples , Nantes and Malaga with prices starting from £20.99 for flights to Ibiza.
