9 Best Corfu Boat Trips: From Corfu Town (2024)

Are you planning your Corfu itinerary and considering going on a boat trip from Corfu?

Great idea, Corfu boat trips are one of the most popular things on the island!

I absolutely love going on boat trips, and recently I spent a week in Corfu, the island that is perfect for exploring from the sea!

While there are many boat trips on the island, not all of them depart from Corfu Town.

Reaching the departure point without a car can be complicated, especially early in the morning.

To save you time sifting through all the listings, I compiled this list of the best boat trips from Corfu Town.

Let’s find the best Corfu boat tours!

1. Corfu Town: Full-Day Cruise with Lunch, Drinks & Swim Stops

⭐️ RATING: 4.9/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 6.5 hours | Check it out!

If you’re looking for the best Corfu boat trip, look no further! This full-day cruise with lunch and drinks is the best value-for-money tour on the island.

The cruise departs from Corfu Town and takes you to secluded beaches along the northeastern side of the island.

You’ll get to swim on 3 beautiful beaches, and see some of the impressive Corfu landmarks from the sea.

The crew will tell you all about the places you sail by, including one of the oldest lighthouses on the island Peristeres Lighthouse, and the historic Kerassia Tower.

With a maximum of 20 people on board, you don’t have to worry about the boat being too crowded.

What sets this tour apart from others is the delicious and generous lunch included in the trip rate. Wine and soft drinks are also included!

The crew took excellent care of us! The day was fun. Lots of tasty food and drinks. Good portions. We stopped at some nice swim spots and enjoyed learning a little bit about the northern part of Corfu. – Melanie, Canada ( read more reviews )

2. Luxury Private Cruise to Paxos, Antipaxos & Blue Cave

⭐️ RATING: NEW! | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 8 hours | Check it out!

Sometimes you can get tired of crowds and want to enjoy a day on your own, exploring secluded beaches and soaking up sun on the board a luxury yacht.

If that’s you, then this luxury private cruise is for you!

This is the best private boat tour in Corfu. You’ll get to sail on a luxury yacht, enjoy snorkeling in crystal clear sea, and visit some of the most picturesque islands in the Ionian Sea.

While some private tours charge you an additional fuel fee, this tour is all-inclusive – the price you see is the price you pay.

You’ll have a skipper and a hostess taking care of you during the trip, and a traditional Greek lunch is organized in a local taverna on Paxos Island.

Hotel pick-up is also included, so you don’t have to worry about getting to the departure point if you don’t rent a car in Corfu .

While I think that sailing in Corfu on a luxury yacht is incredibly romantic, this tour requires a minimum of 5 participants, so it is a better choice for families and friend groups than couples.

You can also pay for 5 people if you fall in love with this tour like I did!

3. Antipaxos & Paxos Blue Caves Boat Cruise

⭐️ RATING: 4.6/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 12 hours | Check it out!

This full-day boat cruise is the best option if you want to visit Paxos and Antipaxos if you’re visiting Corfu on a budget!

The cruise takes you to Antipaxos and Paxos, where you’ll have about 2 hours to discover the island, have lunch, and go for a swim.

You’ll also get to see the beautiful Blue Caves and swim on secluded beaches.

The tour is also popular with Corfu backpackers and younger tourists, so there will be a DJ for the atmosphere and you’ll get to see a traditional dance on the way back.

It is a large group tour, and the lunch is not included in the price, so if that’s important to you I’d go for the first listed option.

However, you’ll pay under 50€ for a full-day boat trip, which is a great deal compared to the average prices in Corfu .

“ The experience was incredible, the organization and the staff on board as the guide were great. I had a great time, and the landscapes were brutal. ” – Berta, Spain ( read more reviews )

4. Corfu Sunset Cruise on Classic Boat

⭐️ RATING: 4.8/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | Check it out!

I’ve seen some of the most beautiful sunsets in Corfu . However, they are not easy to see from Corfu Town which is facing east.

This is why this Corfu sunset cruise is one of the best boat trips in Corfu for couples and sunset lovers.

You’ll embark on a 2-hour journey on a beautiful traditional sailboat, with a small group of people to watch the sunset over the Old Town of Corfu.

It is also a guided tour, so your guide will teach you about the history of Corfu and point out important landmarks of this UNESCO Heritage town you sail past.

All you have to do is relax and enjoy the cruise, admiring the stunning sunset and snacking on traditional finger food. You’ll also get a cocktail or another drink you’d like to sip on while cruising.

“ We loved it! It has been a spectacular evening! The crew was very attentive and friendly, it was a magnificent sunset. The appetizers and the cocktail were delicious .” – Leticia, Spain ( read more reviews )

5. Private Tour To Explore East Corfu

If you want to escape the crowds, you can opt for this private boat tour along Corfu’s eastern coastline.

This Corfu private boat tour is significantly more affordable than the luxury cruise, as the price covers up to 10 participants. It is also a more budget-friendly option for couples, but it doesn’t include lunch.

The tour lasts 8 hours, and you’ll get to swim and snorkel on 3 beaches, including Barbati beach which is one of my favorite beaches in Corfu.

As it is a private tour, you can personalize the itinerary to visit other places in Corfu.

One thing to remember is that you’ll have to pay a fuel surcharge in cash on the day of the tour. It is about 150€ for the whole group.

6. Corfu: Full-Day Boat Tour to Albania

⭐️ RATING: NEW | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 10 hours | Check it out!

If you have a week in Corfu , taking a day trip from Albania to Corfu is a fantastic way to add a visit to another country to your itinerary, without breaking the bank!

Corfu is conveniently located right across the Albanian coastline, making for a quick and easy boat trip over! While you could self-organize a ferry over to Albania, joining this tour makes it much easier.

There is no guided portion of this tour, so once you’re in Sarandë you’re kind of on your own.

You’ll have about 6 hours of free time, so you can stay in the city, go to the beach or visit the popular Ksamil beach.

You could also join their guided tour to UNESCO-listed Butrint National Park , or you can organize it on your own once you’re in Albania.

Remember you are crossing the border, so make sure you have the right paperwork to enter Albania!

7. Parga, Sivota, and Blue Lagoon Full-Day Boat Cruise

⭐️ RATING: 4.5/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 10 hours | Check it out!

If you’re looking for Corfu Town boat trips that take you to mainland Greece, this is the best one !

Parga is one of the most picturesque towns in the area, and it is well worth visiting if you’re already in Corfu.

You’ll have about 2.5 hours there, so you can stroll the cobblestone streets, grab lunch, or go for a swim!

After visiting Parga, you’ll head towards Sivota. You won’t disembark there, only look at it from the sea.

Next up is the Blue Lagoon, which is simply mesmerizing. The water is so clear and there’s a lot of fish, making for fabulous snorkeling!

One thing to consider is that the boat ride is quite long. It takes almost 3 hours from Corfu to Parga, so be prepared with something to do during the ride.

“ Simply great. Parga is a beautiful town, with a beautiful view. Along the way you drive the whole ship into a cave, which is very impressive .” – Nico, Germany  ( read more reviews )

8. Day Cruise to Paxos, Antipaxos, & the Blue Caves

⭐️ RATING: 3.9/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 11 hours | Check it out!

If you want to visit the beautiful islands of Paxos and Antipaxos on a budget, this Corfu boat tour is a great option.

Also, it is one of the rare boat tours in Corfu in May that departs every day of the week!

Before booking, you should be aware that it is a large group tour, as some people have complained that the tour is crowded, but for the price, you can’t beat it.

You’ll get to discover two charming islands, Paxos and Antipaxos, and swim at the unique Blue Caves.

Lunch is not included, but you’ll have enough time on the islands to grab something in local tavernas.

As it is an affordable tour, it is popular with younger crowds, so the music and the atmosphere on the boat are quite lively!

Had a really amazing day – would highly recommend booking the cruise via GetYourGuide – everything went smoothly and was very well organised! – Beverly, Ireland ( read more reviews )

9. Private Tour To Explore Corfu & Canal D’Amour

If you don’t have many days in Corfu , this private boat tour is a fantastic way to explore the northern coast of Corfu, without driving across the mountain in the center of the island.

While most cruises from Corfu stay on the northeastern coast, this tour takes you to the famous Canal D’Amour in Sidari and the stunning Cape Drastis.

You can personalize the rest of your day, and you can ask your guide to take you to a specific beach if you’d like. Alternatively, you can trust the expert skipper to show you the best beaches in Corfu!

Be aware that the tour price covers up to 7 participants, but you’ll have to pay an additional fuel surcharge in cash on the day of the tour.

Amazing Day Trips to Take Around Corfu by Boat

Paleokastritsa is a top choice for boat trips in Corfu

The island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea forms one of the most popular archipelagos in Greece , with Kefalonia , Zante , Lefkas, Ithaka, Paxos and Kythira completing the chain. A trip to this rugged outcrop will reward you with tropical-style beaches, lush mountain scenery, fascinating history and a buzzing culinary scene. Much of the island’s best features, from secluded coves to mysterious caves, can only be explored by boat. Here we reveal some of the best sailing trips you can do to see all this magical destination has to offer.

Surround yourself with coastal Grecian scenery and cuisine with the Culture Trip’s Greece Cyclades Sailing Trip.

Pelekas beaches

boat day trips corfu

Pelekas is a quaint hilltop village located 20-minutes west of the airport, that serves up characterful cafés, unassuming restaurants and a top-rated craft shop, the Witch House, selling handmade ceramics, jewellery and sorcerous curios. After exploring the village head to one of the four beaches nearby. Kontogialos, Glyfada, Gialiskari and Myrtiotissa all offer something different, with the latter being popular with nudists.

boat day trips corfu

Zip over to Paxos from Corfu, with the voyage taking around 90 minutes by ferry and longer if you’re heading over on sail. The tiny island is adorned with ancient (and protected) olive trees and surrounded by electric blue waters. The capital Gaios features a labyrinth of cobbled streets, some stunning examples of Venetian architecture and a pretty square on the seafront. Voutoumi Beach in the north can only be reached by boat and has been compared to beaches in the Caribbean.

The Blue Caves of Paxos

boat day trips corfu

If you need another reason to go day-tripping to Paxos, the west coast caves on the island are a must-see and can only be reached by sailing boat. Around forty caves link together. The largest, Ypapanti, is big enough for boats to cruise into. Trypitos stands as a naturally arched rock formation and the most popular caves are near Erimitis beach. Legend has it the Greek God of the Sea Poseidon hid his mistress Amphitrite in these very caves.

Northeast Corfu

boat day trips corfu

Spend at least one day living the high-life on Corfu’s northeast coast. Here you can explore a string of stunning bays by boat and feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of the south. For years this refined pocket of the island, which is home to the picture-perfect tiny pastel fishing village of Agni, has been dubbed Kensington-on-Sea after the moneyed Brits who flock there by speedboat. Along with idyllic bays, this stretch of coast offers three charming tavernas, an enchanting winery and a cooking school where you can learn to whip up local delicacies.

Paleokastritsa

boat day trips corfu

On Corfu’s west coast you’ll find Paleokastritsa, a town that boasts one of the island’s most dramatic settings. Look up to see towering hills and cliffs dotted with sun-baked olive and pine trees. Pack a picnic and putter along the coastline by boat discovering wild beaches such as Paradise, Stelari and Iliodoros. The Blue Eye Cave – a haunting turquoise circle of water hidden in a grotto – is another highlight, while divers will be in their element with this swathe of the coast being a top scuba spot.

The Palaio Frourio

boat day trips corfu

By boat, you’ll pass the rocky headland that juts east from Corfu Town and spot the Palaio Frourio fortress. This architectural masterpiece, which was built by the Venetians in the 14th century, is a must-see site and best viewed from the ocean. Corfu’s capital has been protected by the fortress walls during many battles over the years. A solitary bridge crosses its seawater moat and the scene makes for a terrific picture. You can wander its grounds or even book tickets to a concert inside but be warned, entry queues can quickly build.

Vidos Island

boat day trips corfu

Less than 1km (0.6mi) from Corfu Old Town port sits this tiny thickly wooded island that’s barely 600m (1,969ft) wide. Once dedicated to the Greek goddess Hera, it is also home to a Serbian Mausoleum, built in honour of the Serbian soldiers who died here during World War I. Enjoy some hikes in the shade or dip into the island’s secluded swimming spots. Be sure to visit Menios’ taverna at the jetty for a simple and delicious lunch with all the ingredients, from crab to octopus, caught by the owner, Menios himself. If you’re not in your own vessel, there’s an hourly boat service with the ride taking just 10 minutes.

Paleokastritsa Monastery

boat day trips corfu

Make the short walk uphill from Paleokastritsa beach to this canary-yellow monastery and you will be rewarded with extraordinary ocean views. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the place of worship dates from around 1228 but some of the monks’ cells were renovated in the 18th century. On-site there’s a small museum housing religious artefacts and icons from the Byzantine era as well as an olive oil press and manicured grounds lined with olive and cypress trees. Entry is free and the best time to get there is to watch the golden glow of the sunset.

boat day trips corfu

The blue lagoons of Sivota, which sit opposite Corfu on the west coast of the Greek mainland, certainly make for a memorable day trip. The crossing by ferry takes around 90 minutes and on arrival, you’ll find incredible Ionian natural beauty with lush greenery and sugary beaches setting the scene. Hop between the smallest beaches: Zeri, Galikos Ormos, Bello Vrako and Zavia, while Pisina beach fringes a gorgeous blue lagoon.

12 Of The Best Day Trips From Corfu, Greece

The best day trips in Corfu, with a variety of places to see – from quiet villages and ancient sites to beach resorts.

While Corfu is famous for its views of clifftop villages over the sea, there’s a lot more to do. You can spend time on unique beaches, wander through old Greek villages, or take a boat trip to Albania.

Despite its size, getting around Corfu for day trips is pretty straightforward, even without a car. You can use buses and ferries to move around the island. Here are 12-day trips I like in Corfu, and I’ll tell you how to get to each place by yourself. I’ll also mention some tour options if you’re not into planning it all on your own.

Achilleion Palace

boat day trips corfu

This famous palace, located about ten kilometers from the city of Corfu, was built in honor of Achilles by the Austrian Empress Elisabeth – Sisi.

After her tragic death, Emperor Wilhelm II often visited this palace, which served as a summer residence. It is important to note that during the First World War, it was used as a hospital.

The park of this summer residence is rich with copies of ancient statues made of marble and bronze. The most impressive to visitors are two statues: a sculpture of the dying Achilles hit in the heel and an 11.5 meters tall statue of Triumphant Achilles holding a spear and a shield with the image of Medusa.

Also, in this wonderfully green park, one can see statues of many gods from Olympus, as well as of poets Shakespeare and Byron.

Paxos Parga

boat day trips corfu

No Greek vacation is complete without a cruise. Parga, lying on the mainland, and the island of Paxos near the southern coast of Corfu. Depart from the port in the city of Corfu, where you will have a wonderful view of the old town, nestled between two Venetian fortresses. Continuing further, you can see the Kanoni peninsula and the “Mon Repos” palace.

Also, as you sail south, you will see the areas of Perama, Benices, and the southernmost places on Corfu, Kavos and Asprokavos. As you approach the channel between Corfu and Paxos, you will see the green island of Paxos, covered with olive and cypress trees. Legend has it that Paxos was created when Poseidon separated a part of Corfu with a powerful strike of his trident, and took it south to create an idyllic refuge for his love, the nymph Amphitrite.

The reputation of this small place is evident in the million-dollar yachts anchored in the harbor alongside small fishing boats. Entering the narrow channel that leads to the small port of the village of Gaios, you will see a beautiful view of the two islands, Panagia and Agios Nikolaos.

From the port, near the center of Gaios village, you can easily walk through the small narrow streets and enjoy your lunch at one of the traditional taverns.

The trip continues to the Greek mainland and the town of Parga, the largest village with an island character, a rich history full of events, and rare beauty intertwined with beaches, emerald sea, peaceful bays, olive groves, romantic side streets and pathways with two-story and three-story houses surrounding an amphitheater beneath the remains of a Venetian fortress.

On the way back to the city of Corfu, you will travel close to the mainland to enjoy views of the rocky coast and sandy beaches. During your trip, you can enjoy sunbathing on the deck of the boat and refreshing yourself with drinks from the bar.

If you are vacationing on Corfu, be sure to visit Aqualand, which is exceptional for both children and even more so for parents. The entrance to Aqualand is not cheap, but it’s worth every cent. If you’re looking for fun, play, and adventure, visit this extraordinary water park.

Pantokrator, the Almighty Lord

This is the highest point on the island, located at 909 meters above sea level. At this impressive location, there is also a monastery with the same name.

Almost always, a cool wind blows through this peak, and the view is mostly directed towards the Albanian coast. To reach Pantokrator, one turns westward near the village of Spartilas, just a few kilometers from Ipsos on the east coast.

Paxos – Antipaxos – Blue Caves

Departing from the port of the city of Corfu, you have a unique view of the old town, nestled between two Venetian fortresses. Continuing further, you can see the Kanoni peninsula and the “Mon Repos” palace.

Also, sailing south, you’ll see the places Perama, Benices, and the southernmost places on Corfu, Kavos, and Asprokavos. As you approach the channel between Corfu and Paxos, you’ll see the green island of Paxos covered with olive and cypress trees.

Legend has it that Paxos was created when Poseidon separated a part of Corfu with a powerful strike of his trident and took it south to create an idyllic refuge for his love, the nymph Amphitrite.

The legend continues with Poseidon’s beautiful palace located in one of the Blue Caves on the island Ipapanati.

boat day trips corfu

What is a Blue Cave? It’s an opening in the rock where the sea is very shallow, and as you enter, you are greeted by semi-darkness and a corridor about 15 meters long in the shape of the Cyrillic letter G (Г).

At the exit of the cave corridor, a guide waits to help you emerge, pushing you under a rock about 0.5 – 1 meter long. During the passage, you’ll see the beautiful bay of Laka on the left side. You continue sailing south past the western coast of Paxos, enjoying the beautiful rocky coast with unique white sandy beaches.

Next, you enter the Blue Caves by boat, where the crystal clear blue water of the sea will take your breath away.

boat day trips corfu

From the caves, you arrive at the small, perfectly formed bay-island of Antipaxos, whose sandy beaches and azure blue sea are compared to the Caribbean. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to swim in the crystal waters of “Paradise beach”.

This excursion returns once more to Paxos… entering a narrow channel that leads to the small port of the village of Gaios, you’ll see a beautiful view of two islands, Panagia and Agios Nikolaos. From the port near the center of the village of Gaios, you can leisurely walk through the narrow streets and enjoy your lunch in one of the traditional taverns.

Angelokastro, Angel’s Castle

boat day trips corfu

This is one of the most significant Byzantine fortresses in Greece, located a few kilometers from the village of Lakones on the northwestern part of Corfu and also near Paleokastritsa.

The road to this viewpoint leads by turning right a few kilometers before Paleokastritsa, and after a few more kilometers, you reach the desired place from where you can observe Paleokastritsa – the port where, according to legend, Odysseus stayed.

At the pass above this viewpoint, you can enjoy the intoxicating scent of vegetation (lavender, cypress, pines, olives) and buy various spices, honey, wine, and olives.

Pelekas, Kaiser’s Throne

boat day trips corfu

Above the most famous sandy beach of the island of Corfu, Glyfada, a few kilometers east of the coast and the village of Pelekas, there is a beautiful viewpoint also named Pelekas, which is also called Kaiser’s Throne.

This viewpoint was a favorite spot of German Emperor Wilhelm and offers each visitor a unique view of the interior of the island.

Olives on Corfu

boat day trips corfu

A special charm to the island of Corfu is added by olive trees, of which there are over four million. It is assumed that the Venetians, during their rule of the island, planted more than two million trees to increase the production of olive oil.

For every 100 trees that were planted, the Venetians paid 12 gold coins. Today, Corfu is the largest producer of olives in Greece, so after tourism, the main income of the island comes from the export of olives and olive oil.

Unlike other regions, olive trees on Corfu are not pruned but are allowed to grow freely, fully developing their majestic height and width. Thus, in the olive groves of Corfu, one can always find a shady spot and freshness, and walking under 400-year-old crowns is something unforgettable.

So, if you decide to visit Corfu, find a good Corfu olive oil, and you will undoubtedly discover that its scent and complexity of taste are simply exceptional and better than any other olive oil.

Saranda and Butrint, Albania

boat day trips corfu

Traveling from Corfu to Saranda and Butrint for a day trip is quite feasible. The ferry ride from Corfu to Saranda takes about 30 minutes.

Once you arrive in Saranda, it’s approximately a 42-minute drive to Butrint. So, the total travel time from Corfu to Butrint is roughly 72 minutes.

Saranda, once an ancient port called Onchesmos, is now a lively seaside town. It has a sunny Mediterranean vibe and is a gateway to exploring Albania’s past and beautiful beaches.

boat day trips corfu

Butrint, just a short trip from Saranda, is like walking through time. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, filled with ancient ruins that tell stories of its past as a Greek colony, a Roman city, and a Byzantine bishopric. You can explore old temples, an amphitheater, and the famous Butrint Baptistery with its extraordinary ancient mosaics.

Ksamil, close to both Saranda and Butrint, is a slice of beach paradise. It’s less crowded and more natural than typical resort areas, with small sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters that might make you think you’re in the Caribbean.

Meteora Monasteries

boat day trips corfu

Almost 4 hours away in one direction from Corfu, a visit to the Meteora Monasteries in Greece is indeed worth it. Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site has unique landscape of immense sandstone pillars, upon which ancient monasteries stand. These monasteries, dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries, are perched atop these rocks, creating a breathtaking sight.

The Meteora complex includes several monasteries, each with its own history and architectural beauty:

  • Great Meteoron Monastery: This is the largest and oldest of the monasteries, situated over 600 meters above the valley floor. Inside, you’ll find a grand 14th-century church, a small museum, and even a wine cellar.
  • Varlaam Monastery: Known for its challenging construction history, it took 22 years to bring materials to its summit. A highlight here is the frescoes in the main chapel.
  • Rousanou Monastery: Established in the 16th century, it’s now a nunnery. The monastery is known for its frescoes depicting martyrdom and its accessible location.
  • St. Stephen Monastery: Visible from Kalambaka, this monastery has historical significance dating back to the 14th century and features relics and a museum.
  • Holy Trinity Monastery: Famous for its appearance in the James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only,” it offers stunning views and beautifully restored frescoes.
  • St. Nikolaos Monastery: The first monastery encountered on the way to Meteora, founded at the end of the 14th century.

The geological formation of Meteora is as intriguing as the monasteries themselves. The rock pillars were formed over 60 million years ago, shaped by weathering and geological changes. These monasteries were originally built by hermit monks seeking isolation and spiritual elevation.

The Acheron River

boat day trips corfu

Located near Parga on the Greek mainland opposite Corfu. In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was one of the five rivers of the underworld and was often associated with the passage to Hades. This mythical significance is partly due to its flowing through dark gorges and going underground in several places.

Geographically, the river is 52 km long, with a drainage area of 705 km². It’s known for its crystal-clear waters and rich surrounding vegetation, creating a unique and captivating natural landscape. The river’s flow varies, forming lakes and water pits in some areas, while in others, it rushes through steep cliffs.

The Acheron River area, particularly near its springs, is a region of outstanding natural beauty, marked by its lush vegetation and transparent waters. It remains one of the lesser-known gems in Parga, retaining its unspoiled charm and a sense of mysterious energy.

The river originates in the mountains of Souli in Epirus and flows to the Ionian Sea at Ammoudia beach. Close to the sea, the river passes through a forest with uniquely shaped water plants, leading up to an imposing Roman bridge, a popular place for picnics.

The Acheron River is recognized as an ecosystem and is protected under the Natura 2000 Network.

Old Perithia

boat day trips corfu

Established in the 14th century during Byzantine times, the village is perched on the slopes of Mount Pantokrator, about 8 km from Kassiopi. Its location, at an altitude of 650 meters, was strategically chosen by the inhabitants to protect themselves from pirate attacks and the diseases spread by mosquitoes on the coast.

The village’s architecture is predominantly Venetian, reflecting the period’s style. At its peak, Old Perithia was home to about 1,200 residents, evidenced by the eight churches that once served the community.

However, the village started to decline in the late 19th century as piracy threats diminished and people began moving to the coast. The rise of tourism in the mid-20th century further accelerated this trend, leading to its eventual abandonment. Today, only a few elderly people reside there year-round, maintaining the legacy of what once was a thriving community.

Here you can explore nearly 150 abandoned houses, churches, and other Venetian-style buildings, some of which are in various stages of decay.

The 11 best beaches in Corfu

T he warm turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea are hard to beat. From tiny pockets of pebbled perfection hidden beneath firs and pines along the somewhat swanky yet still unspoilt northeastern coast to surprisingly long, wide swathes of golden sand to the west, there’s a beach to keep everyone happy. Families gravitate toward the larger beaches that are furnished with sun loungers, in easy reach of a taverna or two and replete with water sports. The more adventurous tackle rocky trails that lead to the island’s most secluded and astonishingly beautiful swimming spots.

For further Corfu inspiration, see our guides to the island's best  hotels ,  restaurants ,  nightlife  and  things to do .

North-east corfu, north-west corfu.

Horseshoe-shaped Kalami Bay attracts beach-going families and sailing yachts to its protected waters and pebbled shores, fringed with olive and pine trees, and blooming with brightly coloured flowers in spring. In this natural playground that was so beloved of the Durrell family, youngsters dangle, mesmerised, at the edge of wooden jetties foraging for undersea life. Yachties tie their dinghies to the dock below  The White House , the former home of the Durrells, checking into the onsite restaurant to relish steamed cockles in the sunshine. Hire a boat to visit quieter neighbouring bays or tune into the old world pace of a pedal boat.

Getting there: Green bus A4 to Kassiopi

Long, narrow Barbati beach is located at the foot of the imposing Pantokrator Massif – Corfu’s tallest mountain – which stands at 2,972 ft (906m). Barbati is known for its stark white flat pebbles that show off crisp, aqua-tinged translucent waters. Couples, in particular, frequent this beach, lazing about on the many sun loungers and ordering freddo espresso from beach bars that double as restaurants. Beachgoers can sate their appetite in the shade of eucalyptus trees. There is easy access by road and parking available. Arrive early to nab a good spot on the beach.

Getting there: Green bus A5 to Barbati-Nisaki

Simple cottages in hues of pale yellow and salmon huddle around Kaminaki beach in the homonymous hamlet, which has barely changed over the years. Strewn with pebbles and sand, this tiny beach has a smattering of umbrellas and draws devout regulars in search of an annual dose of sun-soaked serenity. Children spend hours snorkelling around the rocks at either end of the beach. Boat rental and water sports such as stand up paddle boarding and water skiing are on offer. At the western end of the beach, The Rocks (0030 2663 091374) serves old-school Greek taverna fare, such as masterfully-chargrilled sea bass and village-style sausages, on the water’s edge.

Getting there:   Green bus A5 to Barbati-Nisaki

Framed by a verdant hilly backdrop dotted with holiday apartments and two hotels, long, sandy Glyfada is one of Corfu’s busiest beaches. Families love it as there are ample umbrellas and sun beds, a couple of seafront tavernas and refreshments readily available. Locals and visitors flock to Pazuzu beach bar for sunset parties featuring international DJs. If you prefer a more serene scene, stick to the northern end of the beach, which is well protected from the wind that sometimes blows in from the Adriatic. Naturist-exclusive Myrtiotissa, which Lawrence Durrell enthusiastically described as the world’s loveliest beach, is a short drive north.

Getting there: Green bus B17 to Glyfada

Kontogialos

A winding road descends gently through Pelekas village down to Kontogialos beach, past olive groves cascading down the hillside. Families adore this sweeping curve of a beach that measures some 98ft (30m) wide for its golden sand and shallow emerald waters. Once a hippie haven, Kontogialos also lures a young crowd thanks to its relative proximity to Corfu town. Umbrellas and sun beds abound though there is plenty of space to lay out a towel. To the north is a minuscule beach hidden in the shade of an impressive sheer rock face rising up out of the sea.

Getting there: City Bus 11 to Pelekas

Issos beach is, perhaps, the island’s most jaw-droppingly spectacular beach. Some one and a half miles (two and a half kilometres) long, this untamed stretch of fine, golden sand sits below high, rolling sand dunes. Explore the dunes, where sand orchids grow, and a rare cedar forest that reaches the shores of Lake Korission, Corfu’s most significant wetland habit. There are sunbeds at the southern end, however, it’s more peaceful the further north you go, which makes it popular with naturists. With its steady winds and flat seas, Issos is ideal for windsurfer and sailing catamaran newbies who can hire kit. Bring wine and treats to celebrate a sublime sunset.

Getting there: Green bus B6 to Issos

Seemingly endless Halikounas beach, separated from Issos by a small rocky cape, snakes along some two miles (three kilometres) and backs onto Lake Korission. Families tend to prefer the northern end, where there are a few sun loungers, whereas those seeking a little privacy head south. It's also one of Corfu’s best kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, so it attracts the more experienced, who bring gear or rent onsite. Visit in the late afternoon and wait until the sun casts a bronze glow on this narrow strip of soft fawn sand. You’ll find it hard to resist a solitary, soul-reviving run along a wild, near-empty beach.

Getting there:  Best reached by car

Shortly after entering Paleokastritsa and before you reach the bustling main beach of Agios Spyridon, you will find picture-perfect Verderosa tucked below a cliff. Walk down stone steps lined with green and red railings to the small sandy sliver of a pebbled beach where orange and yellow chaise longues match the blazing sun and palms painted on the faded exterior of a restaurant that once was. If this beach had a soundtrack, it would be reggae. A favourite with couples for its tranquility, Verderosa enjoys views of Paleokastritsa’s small harbour, where boats can be rented to reach otherwise inaccessible beaches like Stelari.

Getting there: Green bus A9 to Paleokastritsa

Agios Stefanos Avliotes

The sheer length and breadth of Agios Stefanos Avliotes is guaranteed to stir the heart of even the savviest beachgoer. This open sandy expanse is more reminiscent of those in Australia. No matter that there are sun lounger and umbrellas aplenty, nature has provided infinite space so you can find your own slice of solitude. Shallow waters make it excellent for children and a regular, gentle breeze is welcome in the height of summer. Tavernas, restaurants and cafés are nearby, as are beach supplies. Small ferry boats depart from here for the Diapontia islets of Erikousa, Mathraki and Othoni.

Getting there:   Green bus A1 to Agios Stefanos

Porto Timoni

It takes a good 20 to 25 minutes to navigate the twisting rocky path from Afionas village down to Porto Timoni but the reward is a lifelong memory of experiencing one of Greece’s great beaches. Many a young family with babes in arms barely flinches at the trek. It's composed of twin pristine sandy coves with crystalline aquamarine seas facing one another, meaning when viewed from a minute lookout ledge on the trail, they are knock-out astounding. The eastern facing beach is at its most gorgeous in the early hours of the day and the westerly side is, clearly, made for sunset and entwined lovers.

Getting there: Green bus A6 to Afionas-Arillas

Agios Georgios Pagon

Horseshoe-shaped Agios Georgios Pagon, not to be confused with Agios Georgios Argyradon beach in the south, measures 1.2 miles (two kilometres) long, so it never feels crowded. This easy-to-access, well-sheltered beach retains a distinct Ionian throwback feel. There are umbrella and sun lounger sets but also ample room to ground yourself on the sand and finely-pebbled shore which shelves gently into cerulean waters. Aside from various water sports, a reef close to shore keeps youngsters busy snorkelling for hours and gives parents peace of mind. Catch a fiery sunset from Fisherman’s Cabin, a tiny real-deal fish taverna reachable on foot.

AP gets rare look as Ukraine tries to slow Russia with drones on new front

From the sky, the Ukrainian drone unit commander had a bird’s-eye view of Russia’s renewed offensive playing out in the country’s war-ravaged northeast.

Enemy forces have captured a string of Ukrainian villages over the past few days after opening a new front along the border with the Russian region of Belgorod. In the village of Strilecha, long depopulated due to its proximity to the border, a Russian infantry unit rolled in with ease, said one drone operator.

“I saw that the infantry just walked into the village,” said Borchik. “There were a lot of them.” Members of the unit spoke on the condition that only their call signs be used in line with Ukrainian military protocols.

In many other places this week, Russian troops were locked in intense battles with Ukrainian soldiers.

Russia’s ground offensive has opened a new front and put more pressure on Ukraine’s overstretched forces, who are using bomb-laden drones to destroy military vehicles. The Associated Press had access to a position on the overstretched front lines with Ukrainian drone operators, and watched as a serviceman destroyed a Russian vehicle from afar with a remote-controlled aircraft.

Despite such blows against Russia, Ukraine is entering a two-month period expected to be its most difficult since the war began.

“This is just the beginning,” said Manul, the call sign of the Ukrainian drone operator. The AP team was allowed to spend time with the drone unit on condition that the exact location not be revealed.

A RARE LOOK Analysts paint a bleak picture. By stretching Ukrainian forces thin ahead of an expected summer offensive, Russia increases the chances of a breakthrough even if Western supplies are delivered in full.

Precious reserves were meant to halt Russia’s advance elsewhere along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) frontline but rotated out to stabilize the new front and limit Moscow’s advance. Now Ukrainian soldiers are concerned Russia will open more fighting along its border with Ukraine to stretch limited manpower and exploit the window of time before promised Western military aid arrives.

Meanwhile, Manul’s unit keeps watch around the clock of a highway in the Kharkiv region and dispatches drones to destroy military vehicles that are meant to bolster the Russian advance along the border.

The push against Kharkiv compels Ukraine to commit troops to defend its second-largest city, “and given the size of the Russian group of forces in the area, this will draw in reserves of critical material, from air defences to artillery,” wrote Jack Watling, RUSI’s Senior Research Fellow for Land Warfare.

THE FRONT LINE Russia can then apply pressure in other areas of the front line, including the mostly static southern front in the Zaporizhzhia region. After Ukraine commits reserves in these directions, Russia can push in further toward Donetsk and Luhansk, Watling wrote.

The capture of Donestsk and Luhansk is Moscow’s stated aim. Russia’s operation, which has seen village after village fall to Moscow’s control, is the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion. Russian troops have faced little resistance.

“Today I saw that the (Russian) infantry just walked into the village,” said Borchik, the drone operator of the ACHILLES battalion of the 92nd brigade.

Signs of an impending offensive were clear, Ukrainian soldiers said. A large accumulation of Russian troops, including newly formed groups, by the border signaled a fresh attack was imminent.

At the same time, improved Russian intelligence gathering managed to exploit another enduring Ukrainian disadvantage: The shortage in personnel.

SHORTAGE OF PERSONNEL When it came time to launch the offensive, Moscow knew Ukrainian forces would be spread desperately thin and have to rotate in units fighting heavy battles in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, known as the Donbas.

“We lack the infantry. Not many people mobilize,” Borchik said. “We are running out of people and crews need to be replenished.”

“Plus, the Russians have information. I don’t know how, but it’s being leaked when one brigade leaves and a new one enters. And in that moment the Russians storm in,” he said.

That was how Russian forces captured the Donetsk settlement of Ocheretyne last month. Moscow’s troops capitalized on the moment between one brigade’s departure and another’s entry, when the line is at its weakest.

With 50,000-70,000 troops amassed in the Belgorod direction, nowhere near enough to seize Kharkiv region, it is clear to Ukrainian commanders that the operation seeks to divert their forces from other parts of the frontline.

“It will significantly complicate things,” he said.

The night they arrived, the unit destroyed many light military vehicles and trucks moving along the highway. The following night, there were fewer, a sign the Russians wised up about the presence of a drone unit within firing range.

“We burned their equipment, so they are driving less now. Maybe they found another path,” he said.

ANOTHER PATH Borchik is now waiting to see what countermeasures the Russians will deploy to evade their drones.

Moscow has gained the upper hand by using electronic warfare to neutralize Ukrainian craft.

“I think they will use radio-electronic warfare here … so that we fly less,” he said. “And they will look for ways to further drag out more reserves.”

Russian troops are deploying new frequencies to evade Ukrainian jammers, while finding other ways to muffle Ukrainian drone frequencies. Recently, Russian troops unveiled tanks equipped with a shell-like contraption, ostensibly to protect it from marauding suicide drones.

“Destroying such equipment is much more difficult,” said Borchik.

Ukraine war latest: Situation in Kharkiv 'dire' - after world took 'eye off the ball' on Ukraine

The UN says it is "deeply concerned" about the situation in northeastern Ukraine, as Russia claims advances in the region. Defence secretary Grant Shapps has criticised the world for delays in getting support to Kyiv. Submit your question on the war for our experts to answer below.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Spain on Friday for a meeting with King Felipe in Madrid, according to a royal palace statement.

Ukraine's defence minister says it is "extremely difficult" for troops to hold ground in Ukraine as they remain outgunned by Russian forces.

Rustem Umerov made a renewed plea for more shells and military supplies as Russia intensifies its offensive in the country's northeast.

"We need more artillery shells as Russia is still many times ahead," he told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2024 in an online address.

"Under such conditions it's extremely difficult to hold the ground."

Russia has put its submarine-launched Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile into service, the TASS state news agency reports.

Russia's state media quoted the missile's chief designer Yuri Solomonov as saying its adoption was announced in a decree on 7 May, the same day that Vladimir Putin began a new six-year term in the Kremlin.

The Bulava was developed under a programme that started in the 1990s, and is designed to be deployed on Russia's Borei-class submarines.

Last November, the defence ministry said one of those submarines had successfully test-launched the Bulava, firing it from an underwater position in the White Sea off northern Russia.

TASS said Russia's Northern and Pacific fleets now include seven Borei submarines and each carries 16 Bulavas.

For context : Vladimir Putin has warned the West since the start of the war in Ukraine that direct intervention by NATO troops there could trigger a nuclear conflict.

In March he said he did not believe the US was "rushing" towards this, but that Russia's nuclear forces were technically ready.

The world taking its "eye off the ball" led to the position we see in Kharkiv today, defence secretary Grant Shapps has said.

Speaking at the Sea Power Conference today, the minister reiterated the UK's complete support for Ukraine, saying Russia winning would be "unimaginable and unacceptable".

He said: "I've heard repeatedly, including said to me by [Ukraine's] President Zelenskyy, which is that without Britain, they wonder whether they would still have been in this war at all."

He listed the UK's commitments to Ukraine, and criticised the world for having taken its "eye off the ball" recently.

"The amount of time it's taken to get the rest of the funding through has directly led to the position we see in Kharkiv today," he said.

He added that he did not think the situation was "fatal", however, and said it was "an important lesson to the world not to lose attention about Ukraine".

Ukraine must develop the "strongest possible democracy", Antony Blinken has told officials during a working lunch in a pizzeria in Kyiv.

The US secretary of state said it was "imperative" that fighting corruption in the country continues along with fighting Russian aggression.

He also said it was important Ukraine developed "the strongest possible democracy" that reflects its citizens and attracts investment.

Mr Blinken's surprise visit follows the approval of a long-delayed foreign assistance package for Ukraine by Congress.

The package sets aside $61bn (£48.1bn) in aid for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defence systems.

Russian troops have captured the town of Buhruvatka in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, the defence ministry reports, according to Reuters.

The claim comes hours after Russia's TASS  news agency reported the western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region had fallen (see post at 9.21am).

Sky News cannot independently verify these battlefield claims.

Russia's supreme court has rejected an appeal by Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza against his 25-year jail sentence, according to Reuters.

The prominent Russian opposition figure, who has both Russian and British passports, was arrested near his Moscow home in April 2022 and convicted of treason by a court in April 2023.

He has repeatedly condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, criticised Vladimir Putin, and lobbied for Western sanctions against Moscow.

In his appeal, Mr Kara-Murza had argued that he had committed no crime and was convicted solely for exercising his right to free speech by expressing public opposition to Mr Putin and the war.

"This whole case is based on the denial of the very concepts of law, justice, and legality," he said in a written submission to the court.

"But it is also based on a crude, cynical forgery - an attempt to equate criticism of the authorities with harm to the country; to present opposition activity as 'treason'. But there is nothing new in this, either; it is what every dictatorship does."

Evacuations are under way in the town of Vovchansk, in the northeast Kharkiv region.

Local officials fear that Vovchansk's fate may mirror that of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, Ukrainian cities where fierce fighting forced Ukrainian withdrawals.

The Kremlin's forces are aiming to exploit Ukrainian weaknesses before a big batch of new military aid for Kyiv from the US and European partners arrives on the battlefield, according to analysts.

Six children have been rescued from the Russian-occupied Kherson region, the area's governor Oleksandr Prokudin has said.

Mr Prokudin said on Telegram the children - one girl and five boys - were "rescued from the camps of the Russian occupiers".

The Save Ukraine organisation worked on the rescue mission, he said.

"It was an extremely difficult rescue mission with delays at roadblocks and intimidation," the governor said.

"Fortunately, all the children are safe now. Doctors and psychologists work with them."

The children were aged between five and 12.
