Why We Love It: If you’re only allowed one personal item on the plane, you may as well get something large enough to fit all of the essentials. When we tested Cuyana's Sling Bag, we stuffed it with a laptop and a light jacket, among other things. Why We Love It: Traveling is already expensive as is, so we completely understand if you want to save where you can. We originally tested this bag for our crossbody bags story and quickly learned it makes for a great traveling companion. The main compartment closes completely with a zip but opens up wide so it’s easy to pack. Inside there was a padded laptop pocket with a Velcro security strap. • Size: Purses come in all shapes and sizes, and if you need to carry a lot of items while traveling, a clutch isn't going to work. With this in mind, it’s important to consider your essentials while traveling to determine what size works best for you. If you plan on carrying no more than your phone, wallet, and keys, a smaller bag works great. Anything more, like a laptop or water bottle, a larger silhouette makes more sense. No matter what your needs, López says to avoid micro bags, as they’re just not realistic while traveling.
• Material: The material of your travel purse can determine two things: how durable it is and how formal it looks. Generally speaking, Moore says that leather is the most durable—and it’s arguably the most professional in appearance, too. She also recommends nylon, which is renowned for its weather-resistant finish. “Leather or nylon will always fare best,” she assures us. That’s because in addition to being strong materials, they’re harder to scuff or stain, and they’re easy to wipe down. 
• Functionality: We love a pretty purse but when traveling, function is of the utmost importance. “As far as design, a good travel purse is something crossbody—it allows you to keep the bag close to your body and makes it far more difficult to be taken off,” Moore says. But that’s not all it takes to be a travel-friendly bag in her book. “A great travel bag has organization, specifically a great pocket system,” she says. “One of my big travel tips is to never have all of your important or high-value items in the same bag, or even in the same pocket.” Re-touching on the crossbody feature, it’s not just great for security’s sake. “A crossbody will help with weight distribution on your shoulders during long travel days,” López says. “Comfort, pockets, and a durable yet lightweight material are key,” Talley adds on the topic. “Being a mom of two active toddlers, I appreciate pockets more than ever—for snacks, sunscreen, pacifiers, lip balms , etc. And because my kids tend to dig through my purse just as much as I do, a material that hides wear and tear is crucial." Lastly, having something that zips fully closed is always a bonus. 

Do I need to use an anti-theft purse while traveling?

As many pickpocketing horror stories as there are swirling around social media, Moore says that anti-theft purses aren’t all that necessary. “It’s better to know how to protect your purse and belongings no matter the bag you decide to bring,” she says because “a lot of the anti-theft bags are just not the most attractive,” she admits. Doing things like not leaving your purse on the back of the chair, on the seat next to you, or at a table—especially in situations where you’re easily distracted, like a restaurant or nightclub.” She says it’s also important to be mindful of how you’re carrying your bag. While it may be more comfortable to sling it over your shoulder, on your back, or behind your hip, keep a purse tucked under your arm or held closely to your body in front. Even just choosing something that zips will help you avoid getting pickpocketed since it makes getting into your bag more challenging.

Is a travel purse considered a personal item while flying?

Generally speaking, a purse is often considered an item in itself. If you’re not checking a bag especially, it’s important to find a silhouette that can easily fit into a larger personal item (not your carry-on), to maximize your packing imprint. Still, it depends on the airline and who’s working the desk when you start to board. “I travel with both a backpack and a purse/crossbody bag on every trip, and I’m not usually stopped on standard airlines like Delta or United for having too many personal items,” says Moore. “If I’m flying with a budget airline that’s pretty strict, I opt for a cute crossbody sling bag. Those bags lay flat against your body and are rarely seen as ‘extra baggage.’”

The best way to keep your valuables safe while traveling is to make sure your bag is fully enclosed and wear it close to your front. Lo suggests a crossbody bag (we like the MultiSac Lorraine Women's Crossbody Bag and the Baggu Medium Nylon Crescent Bag ) to achieve both of these. Lo says that if you need something bigger, choose a fully enclosing tote (which you can keep to your front in crowds) instead of a backpack. Carry-ons are what go in the overhead compartment (and are usually rollaboards), whereas personal items must fit under the seat in front of you. Despite all that it’s able to carry, the bag distributes weight evenly and doesn’t get super heavy. We find the $90 price point a good middle ground for a travel tote, and all the details, like the leather trims, magnetic closures, and five stylish colorways make it worth the price. Not to mention that the water-resistant nylon is made from recycled water bottles and the leather is recycled as well. In fact, we can’t think of anything we would change.

Made from heavyweight canvas with a reinforced flat bottom and no pockets, this bag can be stuffed to the brim and then folded up when not in use. It’s our go-to bag for weekend trips, beach days, grocery shopping, etc. and it always holds everything we need—the brand has tested it to hold up to 500 pounds. Though we personally love the convenience of being able to reach in and grab anything from the open top, if you prefer extra security, it also comes in a zipped version. The white canvas and colorful straps will never go out of style, and you can choose from 13 different colors and add a monogram for only $8. The bag ranges from small to extra large, and if you want to easily wear it over your shoulder, we recommend ordering the long straps. It honestly may be the best $40 you’ll ever spend.

If you prefer the look of a leather tote , we adore this one from Bandolier. Crafted from pebbled leather, it's more durable than smooth leather designs that can scuff easily. Besides the scrumptious material, the tote is the ideal size for trips and going to the office. We usually end up throwing our sunglasses somewhere in our tote, but this bag actually has a special compartment for them, in addition to a key leash, 15-inch laptop sleeve, and additional zip pockets. After filing the bag with all our items, it doesn’t weigh us down or become bulky. Though it doesn’t zip close, it does have a magnetic closure for extra security.

Greer also loves how you can take this bag from airport to meeting due to its stylish nature. In addition to a top handle, it also has a removable crossbody strap when we want to go hands free. What to Look for in a Travel Tote

• Material: Material is without a doubt a key player in your decision when getting a travel bag. For a super long-lasting option, we recommend keeping an eye out for full-grain leather or pebbled leather since it’s more durable and won’t show scuffs or scratches easily. If leather is not your vibe, we recommend a fabric that will be either stain-resistant or easy to clean, like nylon or polyester. A cotton canvas tote, can also be a great option, as it often can be hand or machine washed.
• Organization: The way you organize your bag is personal—and you should find the bag that works to your advantage. The obvious answer is if you like a lot of organization, choose the bag with more pockets. For long distance travel, we recommend looking for a bag with interior pockets and zippered exterior pockets. If you’re more of a catch-all bag kind of person, we recommend looking for a flat-canvas bottom and a structured silhouette to help you stay organized even with less pockets.
• Color: “I often opt for versatile shades like black, brown, or neutrals that seamlessly complement my travel wardrobe,” says Deseri Kelley , founder of a luxury handbag brand. But if you like your accessories to make more of a statement, we recommend sticking with deep hues of statement colors such as deep reds, greens, oranges, etc. You’ll still get a pop of color without dirt showing up easily.

"The perfect size should comfortably fit everything I require for my particular journey without becoming overly burdensome to carry,” says Kelley. If you plan on carrying your laptop in your tote, always double check the tote’s dimensions to see if it’s large enough.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your tote—or any bag for that matter—is to hang it in storage. The constant strain on the straps will gradually weaken them, leading them to break eventually. Instead, you should store your bags on a flat surface and consider stuffing them with tissue paper to help retain their shape.

Why is a waterproof bag a necessity for any paddlesport adventure?

With any escapade, it’s important to plan ahead. While planning isn’t the most exciting part of the trip, when it comes to a paddle sporting experience, it can make the difference between getting your belongings wet if they fall into the water or stolen if they are left on dry land.

Everything you place in your regular bag, including your wallet, car keys and snacks can be safely stored in a waterproof option. Plus, you can create a kit, especially for your paddlesport trips, which can feature items like a whistle, personal locator beacon and more.

While there are hundreds of waterproof bags for paddlesport enthusiasts available on the market, we’ve tested options that are great for budget, quality and space.

1 / Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack 50 Litre

Big River by name, big capacity by nature – this roomy backpack takes a whopping 50 litres of kit, which is enough for multiple days of exploring on a hiking trail, a weekend sailing trip or a camping adventure. The Big River is as waterproof and durable as it looks, and on test we got the impression that this pack would withstand rough treatment on wild waters without turning a hair.

This design is minimalist compared to proper hiking backpacks aimed for use on dry land, but unlike traditional rucksacks, the Big River is fully waterproofed with a nylon shell, so your stuff will stay dry even if you’re trekking in the heaviest rain. On the outside the pack sports a whopping 10 lash loops in two daisy chains, making it easy to attach the pack to a board, boat or bike.

The plentiful loops are also useful for tying wet kit to the outside of your backpack when you’re on the go. Unlike many waterproof backpacks we’ve reviewed in the past, this bag sports comfy padded straps, so you can still hike long distances to get to your paddlesport spot while wearing it. There’s also a hip strap, but it’s a pity it’s not padded for extra support. Encountering foul weather or heading for the water? Just roll this bag three times to seal it. The white interior makes it easy to see what kit you’ve packed but does get dirty and stained easily. A field repair buckle is included, and the Big River is available in black and dark red/orange – we prefer the latter as it makes you a tad more visible on the water, although the black version is neutral enough that you could use it for commuting to work.

This pack weighs 760 grams so it’s quite heavy compared to simple dry bag designs, but you’re getting a proper backpack for your money (and if you need even more room, there’s also a 75-litre version available). This design is expensive but worth the spend if you need a dry bag-meets-backpack for all kinds of adventure. 

2 / Itiwit Duffle Bag 5 Litre

You’ll be easy to spot coming if you’re sporting Itiwit’s bright duffle bag – this vividly-coloured dry bag is available in sunshine yellow or neon orange, both ideal for being seen by other water users when you’re on or near the ocean or a river. Itiwit is one of sporting goods retailer Decathlon’s stable of in-house brands, and we reckon it offers great value for money all round – this handy little bag is a steal at under £10.

This design is dinky enough to work as a sort of outdoor handbag – sling it over your shoulder to keep valuables such as your phone and your wallet within reach but protected from splashes when you’re paddleboarding, kayaking or just out walking the dog in horrible weather. The Itiwit bag has good solid clips and a simple but adequate strap (it isn’t padded, but then again this bag is too small to be too heavy when slung on one shoulder). There’s a top clip that works like a lash loop, so you can add a carabiner and attach this to another bag or a bit of equipment.

Our favourite feature was the numbered stencilling on the outside of the polyester material so that you can see if you’ve folded this bag far enough before you secure it – we’d love it if all dry bags had this feature. This bag is only ‘waterproof to splashes’ and should not be immersed according to Decathlon – on test, we found it let in water after a minute when submerged. It is ideal for popping your phone in for more relaxed activities near water.

3 / Mustang Survival Greenwater Deck Bag 35 Litre

Reasons to buy: submersible, easy to pack Reason to avoid: expensive, stiff zipper 

Unlike most dry bags on the market, Mustang’s Survival Greenwater claims to be fully submersible, so it really can be chucked in the sea or dropped in a river without any damage to its contents. On test, we found that if we submerged this bag, it kept water firmly out for up to twenty minutes, mostly due to its hardcore zipper designed with ‘aquaseal’ to keep liquid at bay. The zip is quite stiff to wield, but that bag does come with zipper lubricant to keep it running smoothly and a big, quick-grab zipper pull.

We tested out the bag over a month and it consistently stayed leakproof – while this true waterproofness might degrade with age, this design is suitable for more extreme water sports and will even float if it’s accidentally dropped in the drink. Elsewhere, there’s a removable shoulder strap, lots of lash points and a green fluorescent-hued lining for better visibility when you’re packing kit. The rectangular shape of the Greenwater makes it quick to square away your belongings inside and store with other packs of a similar shape in small spaces.

This bag was the most expensive on the test and it’s overkill if you just want a simple, splashproof bag for adventures near water, but if you’re a sports professional or work outdoors (this bag was designed with military use in mind) this tough bit of kit is worth the spend. A massive 65-litre version is also available.

4 / Red 60 Litre Getaway Kit Bag 60 Litre

Red Equipment started life making paddleboards and changing robes, so it’s no surprise they are dab hands at creating tough kit bags that can withstand an encounter with water. If you need a ready-for-anything kit bag, this is the model for you – the external fabric of the Getaway is made with Red’s own-brand ‘armour tech’, which is designed to be tough yet supple, hardwearing over time, wipe clean and scuff-resistant.

This wonder nylon-based material is also 100% waterproof and withstood a hose down on test. This duffel-style bag has plenty of room (we tested out the 60-litre Getaway pack – a 40 Litre Mission pack and 90-litre Expedition pack are also available) but we reckon the middle size is just right for weekends away and for storing kit and clothing on adventures. On the outside are tough rubber grab handles and two fabric top handles that double up as backpack straps and have enough padding to make this pack comfortable to wear on your shoulders over short distances.

Inside the pack is all black, making sorting kit a bit tricky. The outside offers plenty of places to store belongings, including a mesh external stash pocket and two zipped pockets. Thoughtful extras include a changing mat – great for surfers and wild swimmers – and even an emergency whistle. This roomy design is great for life on deck or for use as a check-in bag on adventurous travels – it’s tough enough to withstand everything from ocean spray to being chucked on a baggage carousel, so while it’s expensive you should find yourself using it regularly. 

5 / Mustang Survival Highwater Backpack 22 Litre

Mustang’s Highwater is exactly what it looks like – a dry bag you can also pop on your back thanks to simple shoulder straps.  This backpack works well as a waterproof container you can wear if needed, so it’s ideal for paddleboarding excursions, walking to a wild swim spot or for popping a weekend’s worth of clothes in for a boat trip. A roll top entry makes it quick to stash kit and then seal the bag, and watertight seams stopped any splashes getting through on test.

This pack has more external features than most dry bags, including three handy stretchy mesh pockets, which are great for quickly storing clothing and kit on the go. The interior is black, which does make it hard to see what you’ve squirrelled away. The shoulder straps are foam padded and there’s a sternum clip – they’re comfortable for a few miles but not structured enough for a proper trek (despite Mustang’s claim of ‘all-day comfort’).

Where this design does stand out compared to other backpack designs is for its lightweight – at under 600g it won’t weigh you down. There are no dedicated lash loops but you can use the straps to cinch this pack to a board or a bike. We reckoned despite that being a versatile pick this is quite a pricy option for such a simple design – there are more affordable dry bag-cum-backpacks on the market.

Musto’s Evo collection was designed with sailors in mind, and these waterproof packs in an array of sizes stood out for ocean going as soon as we laid eyes on them. These dry bags look and feel like great quality – if you’re after something splashproof they’re a solid all-rounder for sailing and water sports alike. This 20-litre version of the Dry Tube design was reliably water-resistant on test. We wouldn’t class this as a fully waterproof bag and you can’t submerge it, but it will withstand rain and splashes, so it’s better used near water rather than where there’s a likelihood of it getting dumped overboard. It’s also tough enough to chuck about on boats and bikes or to attach to the outside of a mountaineering backpack.

A clever translucent panel means you can see what is inside at a glance. This feature is great when you’re packing multiple dry bags full of kit for adventure camping or international travels, and makes seeing inside the pack easy. We’d pick the black colourway over the light grey version of the Evo Dry, as the lighter hue could get dirty easily. The included strap is of decent quality (although there’s no padding so while it’s comfortable enough to sling over your shoulder, we wouldn’t carry it far) and when the bag is rolled up the buckle doubles up as a grab handle. There’s only one lash loop, but it’s solid plastic so you can pop a carabiner on it. This is a great all-rounder for activities above the water line and a decent price. 

How we tested the best waterproof bags for paddlesport 

We know how important it is for gear to last as long as possible, that’s why when testing the bag – adventure blogger, Sian Lewis, took a variety of features into account to ensure the best of the best made it onto the list. 

To ensure anyone can travel with these bags in the water, we made sure all options were 60 litres / 16 US gallons or less capacity. 

A paddlesport bag should be lightweight to ensure it can travel with you on a canoe, paddleboard or raft. 

Waterproofness

Bags are rarely 100% submersible due to their design, but some have a better seal than others and can take on the elements better than others. 

Without compromising on value for money, we’d recommend setting a budget for your paddlesport bag. It’s important that the more you invest in the bag, the less likely you are to replace it within a year.

Slightly smaller than the regular Apex 3.0, this backpack from Troubadour strikes a perfect balance between design, comfort and practicality. I think it looks fantastic and the materials used give the impression this is a bag that’ll last and last. Neat details include an AirTag pocket and a handy bit of storage for your phone or passport in the shoulder strap. Troubadour bags are not cheap, but in the Apex 3.0 Compact you’ll find a backpack that comfortably sits among the very best we’ve ever used.

When I reviewed the regular Apex Backpack 3.0 by Troubadour earlier this year, I described it as “almost perfect”. I loved the design, the quality and the comfort but I found it to be slightly too large, too bulky and, in the all-black colourway, a bit too businesslike.

Fortunately, I knew how all of these concerns could be addressed, and I’m pleased to report that the slightly smaller ‘compact’ version, newly available in a very pale blue colour Troubadour calls scree, is everything I look for in a premium backpack .

Troubadour Apex Compact Backpack 3.0 review: Price and availability

At £225, this is still very much a premium backpack, and it’s just £20 cheaper than the full-size Apex 3.0. But you get a lot for your money, as I’ll dive into through the rest of this review. It's available to buy at Troubadour and select retailers, like Amazon .

Colour options at the time of writing include black, navy and ‘Air Force Blue’. Troubadour tells me new colours including Basalt, Scree and Livid Green, plus a two-tone colourway called Green Smoke & Obsidian Green, will be available in the coming weeks (as of September 2024). Basalt and Scree will be coming to the original, full-size Apex 3.0 too.

Troubadour Apex Compact Backpack 3.0 review: Design and features

The Compact is exactly the same as the regular Apex 3.0, apart from being slightly smaller in every dimension. The full-size bag measures 48 x 32 x 15 cm, has a capacity of 25 litres, weighs 1 kg and can carry laptops up to 17 inches. The Apex 3.0 Compact measures 41 x 29 x 14 cm, has a capacity of 16 litres, weighs 0.9 kg and can accommodate laptops up to 16 inches. Both bags fit inside easyJet’s small cabin bag limit, but even the Compact is slightly too large for RyanAir’s free baggage allowance (40 x 20 x 25 cm).

Just like the regular Apex 3.0, the Compact is made from a waterproof fabric called FortiWeave, which is spun from recycled plastic bottles. It feels incredibly hard-wearing while still having the sort of premium texture you’d expect from a £225 backpack. There’s a nice bit of vegan leather trim above the rear zip, adding a pleasing bit of contrast to the external aesthetics, and the handle has a rubber inner that makes it both comfortable and sturdy.

The bag has a pair of elasticated bottle pockets that sit flush against the bag when empty, and a zipped pocket on the front that has a soft lining that is sure to keep your phone and sunglasses safe.

Inside this pocket there’s a small pocket for an AirTag (although I wish Troubadour wouldn’t decorate it with the message ‘Track with AirTag’, since that’s just asking a thief to remove your Apple tracker), and a handy clip for attaching your keys.

The rear of the bag has a slot for attaching it to the handle of a cabin suitcase , plus three large areas of padding. These make the bag very comfy (and keep your laptop safe in the rearmost compartment), while the deep grooves between them help keep your back ventilated. The rearmost compartment has a dedicated slot for a laptop, plus another for a tablet, then a further space for items like magazines or an eBook reader .

Before we dive into the main compartment, I need to talk about the shoulder straps. They are slightly stiffer than those used by most other backpacks, and at first they feel a bit strange, almost like you’re strapping on a parachute. But you’ll soon realise they are incredibly comfortable, despite being a little bulky, and I love how the excess lengths of adjustable strap are tethered to themselves, so they don’t dangle loose.

The left-hand shoulder strap has an integrated zipped pocket, which expands to neatly fit your phone, wallet or passport. It’s an incredibly convenient place to put such items, especially when passing through an airport, but I struggled to get used to the feeling of my phone being pressed to my chest. Although I prefer my phone in my trouser or jacket pocket, the shoulder strap is still a great place for a passport while travelling.

Open the Compact and you’ll find the interior layout is the same as the full-size Apex 3.0, but slimmed down slightly. This means there are five pockets, two of which are zipped, plus a pen/stylus holder. The pockets are all neatly arranged and their various sizes makes them handy for carrying a broad range of items.

Then of course there’s the main interior space itself, which benefits from a broad, flat floor that holds its shape even when the bag is empty. This sounds like a small detail, but it means the bag stands up on its own – and anyone who commutes on busy trains or spends their lives queuing at airports will appreciate this, since the Apex 3.0 Compact can be placed by your feet without falling over.

Troubadour Apex Compact Backpack 3.0 review: Performance

I’ve used the Apex 3.0 Compact for a couple of weeks now. It has accompanied me on trips to the shops, journeys into London for work and on a couple of overnight stays away from home. For me, this bag is the perfect size. I know such a parameter is entirely subjective, but for my use case it offers the ideal balance between capacity and portability.

It is comfortable, even when full, and takes heavier items like laptops in its stride, while retaining its sleek shape and feeling like it is made to last. The pale colour of this particular example is likely to attract dirt and stains over time, more so than a black bag, but a quick and occasional clean should see to that.

I love the attention to detail Troubadour has poured into this bag. For example: The pocket on the shoulder strap has two pairs of magnets that snap it closed when it’s not in use, stopping the lining from looking untidy. Being that bit smaller than the regular Apex 3.0 also means it’s safe to use with most budget airlines, since it’ll fit under the seat.

Troubadour Apex Compact Backpack 3.0 review: Verdict

I’ve used a lot of bags over the years. From messenger and shoulder bags , to laptop briefcases and all manner of backpacks. Each has its pros and cons, but this is the first time I’m willing to describe a bag as perfect. It’s the right size and the right design, with a good selection of pockets and a great range of colour options. It's clear Troubadour pays as much attention to aesthetics as practicality and comfort.

I also like the materials Troubadour has used, and I feel the price is justified even when typical luxury fabrics like genuine leather are shunned in favour of vegan and recycled alternatives. If you have the budget you will not be disappointed.
