A dream I didn't know I had

Absolutely wonderful 2-hour short ride. My mother and I are both advanced riders and were lucky enough to have a private ride (the others who booked on didn’t turn up!) with Eva, our guide. She was wonderful and our ponies were even better. Can’t recommend this experience enough!

Absolute highlight!

We did this tour at the end of our 5-day-trip in Iceland and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The tour guides were very caring, committed, professional and friendly (the friendliest people we talked to in a week!). The scenery was amazing, the horses were funny and warm-hearted. Loved it!

During our 5 night stay this was the best activity we had during this stay. Even though the weather was the worst, rain and wind up to 20m/s, both the guides and the horses did amazing. Extra thanks to Elise, you’re the best.

Best horse ride I've had

As an experienced rider, I had a great time on a lively and fun pony. My friend, a beginner, also had a great ride on a steady safe pony. A really nice place and the ponies look well cared for and are obviously very fit as they were still raring to go after 3 hours. A must do for anyone who enjoys horse riding.

Small Groups - Big Adventures!

How are we different? We enjoy travelling and horse riding in smaller groups. We think it´s more personal and more fun – you spend less time to wait for a big group and more time enjoying the Icelandic horse and the unspoiled Icelandic nature. In our opinion, the optimal group size is between 2-10 people. Our horses mean everything to us and we are very proud of our four-legged team. They are well trained and cared for, easy to ride and with good “Tölt” so you can enjoy the Icelandic way of riding to the fullest. We provide you with high-quality riding equipment and personal service. After every ride, we invite you for  coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snack in our stables . We speak English, German, French, Icelandic and Swedish.

Useful information

All of our horseback riding tours include a light meal, tea and coffee. We provide rain gear, riding gloves and certified safety helmets. Please dress according to weather. Sneakers are usually fine if it’s dry and warm but should bring more appropriate shoe wear if it’s wet or cold. Our staff takes pride in choosing the right horse for every rider, beginners, as well as more experienced riders, are welcome. IMPORTANT : It is not allowed to bring used riding gear to Iceland! There is a high risk of infecting our horses if you bring riding gear such as boots, chaps, gloves.You can bring clothes that have been washed with a disinfectant

Disinfection instructions from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority

The age minimum on our regular tours is 8 years. Children between 8 and 16 have to be accompanied by an adult. If you have younger children with you and you want to come for a ride we recommend our very popular private family tours. Pregnant women should not go on our tours because of possible health risks to mother and/or baby. People under the influence of alcohol or other drugs are not allowed on the tour. Please inform us before the tour of any underlying health problems that could affect your ability to participate in riding tours. The weight limit is 110 kg. But most important is that you are in a good physical shape for the riding. Guests cannot carry suitcases, backpacks or big cameras on tours. Valuables can be stored in a safe place at our facilities.

Tour description

Are you ready to make new furry friends? Meet the beautiful Icelandic horses and enjoy a scenic horseback riding tour in the breathtaking Icelandic nature. The best part? It’s located only 20 minutes away from downtown Reykjavik!

We took the lava field trail ride with pick up in Reykjavik. Pick up was easy (as it was for all tours we did- Reykjavik and the tour companies have it down to a science!). Helmets were provided. Winter gear was available if you weren't dressed warmly enough. We were divided into 'beginner' and 'advanced' to put us on the right level of (cooperative) pony. The ponies were very easy to handle and we were given a choice whether we wanted to go fast (tolt pace) or slow (we went fast). Icelandic ponies and saddles are a heck of a lot more comfortable than US Western or English riding and horses! Beautiful scenery and a nice opportunity to experience the Icelandic pony!

Only me and my partner attended, we had a lovely chat with the guide, both our horses Ást and Stármur were incredible friendly, while Stármur liked to veer left a bit he was very cooperative at getting back in line, it was incredibly cold but we were well wrapped up and we’re offered more layers, the walk was nice and long and the staff were kind enough to let us say bye to the horses during their feeding time after we finished

Highly recommend ! No matter the time of year! We went in the winter so it was cold but we wore heated vests and snow suits and we were fine! Molly was our guide on this amazing horse back riding adventure! She was knowledgeable and taught us all the things we needed to know to have a fun ride! Our horses were well mannered and sweet. We loved everything about it!

• Weight limit The weight limit for one person is about 110 kg (approx. 240 lbs).
• Age limit 8 years age limit. Children 14 years or older need written parental permission to ride alone.
• Clothes and shoes We have overalls and rain clothes if that should be necessary. We also have some gloves and boots which can be borrowed. But over all, visitors should dress according to weather. Most of our visitors have sneakers or boots on, and that’s in most cases just all right, but especially in the wintertime it can in some cases be good to have something more appropriate on.

A horseback riding tour is the best way to experience the Icelandic horse. You’ll meet the other visitors in your small tour group on location and be given the right equipment for the activity. Then you’ll be matched to your horse for the remainder of the day, selected to match your height so that you can ride comfortably. Naturally, novices may be given easier horses to ride, and more confident equestrians paired with horses with more personality or strength.

After you’ve been shown how to correctly mount and control the Icelandic horse under you, it’s time to ride! The group may be split into groups depending on the confidence of the riders, with a slower walk-only group or a more exhilarating chance to try out the unique 5 gates of the horses. Then the ride begins, and you can relax and enjoy the rolling landscape before you! If you’re ever struggling to control the horse’s direction or speed, you’ll have plenty of friendly guides around you to ask or help out.

You’ll usually get a break after a stretch of the ride (mainly for the horses, not the humans). This is ideal for taking pictures, both of the scenery and of you on the majestic horses, while they have a snack. Our guides are happy to get shots of all the tour groups while visitors can say hello to the other Icelandic horses in the group.

WHAT TO WEAR ON A HORSEBACK RIDING TOUR

If you aren’t an avid equestrian, you might be unsure of what to wear on your Icelandic horseback riding tour. First and foremost, wear comfortable clothes. While you won’t exert yourself too much, you will be out on the horses for over an hour, so it’s important to be comfy . 

Long pants will save your legs from chafing against the saddle. The clothes should be quite close to your skin so they won’t get tangled in the equipment. Try to avoid long scarves for the same reason. The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers. If it gets too cold or too hot, you can easily adjust your outfit just by adding or removing a layer or two.

Warm, waterproof, closed-toe shoes with a small heel will keep your feet comfortable and in the stirrups.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO HORSEBACK RIDING IN ICELAND?

HOW LONG WILL MY TOUR BE?

Besides the incredible scenery and stunning natural sites, one of the top things to do when visiting this Nordic nation is to go horseback riding in Iceland. Icelandic horses are unique and beautiful and going on for a ride is one of the best ways to see the country from a different perspective.

Drive even a small way outside of Reykjavik and you’ll see these gentle, sturdy and stalky little horses grazing in pastures and meadows all over the Icelandic countryside. And they’re some of the most distinctive (and adorable!) horses in the world!

There are many characteristics of the Icelandic horse that sets them apart from other breeds and riding them is an excellent way to see the parts of the country away from the Ring Road while also experiencing a bit of local culture and tradition.

About Icelandic Horses

It’s a horse, not a pony.

Let’s talk a little bit about the Icelandic horse itself. This hearty equine is a breed unique to all others and really an iconic part of the country of Iceland itself.

Though the Icelandic horse only stands at about 13 – 14 hands (132 – 142 cm) tall — a height that would generally classify an equine as a pony — don’t be fooled; the Icelandic horse is a horse through and through.

While short in stature, these little horses are sturdy, stalky, and tough as nails. Throughout thousands of years, natural selection has played its part in allowing the horse to withstand and persevere through the harsh Icelandic climate.

Their sturdy builds, spirited temperaments, and ability to carry immense amounts of weight all are reason enough to classify these equines as horses. So pay the Icelandic horse a bit of respect and remember that it’s not a pony!

Icelandic Horse Gait

Another idiosyncrasy that makes the Icelandic horse unique among other breeds is their distinctive gaits.

In general, horses and ponies share four basic gaits: the walk, trot, canter, and gallop. All four of these are at various increasing speeds and beats. While Icelandic horses do share the walk, trot, and canter with most other horse breeds in the world, there are two other gaits that make the Icelandic horse distinctive from all other horse and pony breeds that you might be familiar with.

The first unique gait of the Icelandic horse is called a  tölt . The  tölt  is similar to a trot and is the most natural gait for an Icelandic horse.

At a speed that lands somewhere between a trot and a canter, it is also incredibly smooth so it eliminates the need to post while riding and there is little chance that you’ll be bounced out of the saddle – perfect for beginner riders!

The other gait that sets the Icelandic horse apart is called  flugskeið , or flying pace. The flying pace is the fastest gait in the Icelandic horse’s repertoire at one step above a canter but just below a gallop.

In this gait, the horses are able to reach speeds of nearly 48 km/hour and, because of the breed’s incredible heartiness and sure-footedness, they are able to sustain it for long periods of time.

Fun Facts about the Icelandic Horse

The Icelandic horse is descended from the Faroe pony and the Norwegian fjord horse and was brought to Iceland by the Vikings. There are also genetic links between the Icelandic horse and the similar Mongolian horse.

According to Norse mythology, the god Odin is said to have ridden an eight-footed Icelandic steed called Sleipnir. In the early 20th century, Icelandic horses were exported to Britain and were used as pit ponies during the mining boom.

There are about 80,000 Icelandic horses in the country, meaning that there is one horse for approximately every four people. Icelandic horses have passports, but once one leaves Iceland, they are not permitted to return.

If you’re looking to ride horses from a base in Reykjavik rather than having to travel too far outside the capital, then a good option for you is to book a day tour with Red Lava Horse Riding.

This two-hour horseback riding tour will pick you up from Reykjavik an hour before your scheduled tour time and also provides essential gear such as gloves, waterproof clothing, and helmets. The tour guide will take you all around some beautiful, scenic South Iceland landscapes that are difficult to see on foot and it is suitable for absolute beginners and more experienced riders alike.

After the tour, they will bring you back to Reykjavik. You also have the option to drive to their stables yourself if you have your own transport in Iceland.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour from Reykjavik

This 2-hour tour from Reykjavik is another great option if you’re looking for a tour from Reykjavik. The stables aren’t located too far outside of the city centre and the 1 to 1.5-hour trail ride will take you through some beautiful mountain and volcanic scenery all while not venturing too far from Reykjavik itself.

Riders can choose from a beginner, intermediate or advanced trail ride depending on their skill level, meaning this is one of the best horse riding tours for those who don’t have much (or any!) riding experience. Also, everyone has the opportunity to warm up with a steaming mug of coffee or hot chocolate after the ride.

Like the Red Lava tours listed above, the cost of transport to and from Reykjavik is also included, as is any riding gear that you may need (gloves, helmets, boots, rain gear, etc.).

Afternoon Viking Horseback Tour

If you’re an intermediate to advanced rider looking to go ride Icelandic horses without having to venture too far from Reykjavik, then this 3-hour afternoon tour is a great option.

Located only 10 minutes outside of the capital, this 3-hour horseback riding tour will allow you to explore the Reykjanes preservation area on the back of a beautiful Icelandic horse.

You should be prepared to trot, tolt and canter for the majority of the time and the stable does recommend that riders have ridden horses at least 30 times before embarking on this tour. Basically, they want to ensure that you know how to handle and control a horse while in several different gaits so you don’t hold back a group of experienced riders.

Perfect for riders aged 12 or older, all gear is also provided so you don’t need to worry about bringing your helmet or boots along with everything else you’re likely packing for your Iceland trip.

There is also an option to include a transfer to and from the riding centre if you haven’t rented a car. All in, you can expect this tour to last about five hours, with three hours of active riding time.

Vik Horse Adventure

If you’re looking for a great place to ride horses outside of the capital, then another fantastic option is to go on the black sand beach tour with Vik Horse Adventure.

This tour, leaving from the town of Vik in the south of Iceland, lasts about one hour and goes along the stunning black sand beach nearby. This is an excellent way to experience some of the most distinctive landscapes in the country, if not the entire world.

The ride, again, is suitable for all experience levels and they do provide some essentials such as helmets, gloves, and rain gear.

Horseback Riding + Golden Circle Tours

If you’re short on time and want to get the most out of your stay in Iceland, there are a number of tours that combine a stint of Icelandic horseback riding with a full tour of the incredible Golden Circle.

For example, this tour that leaves from Reykjavik will take you on a trail ride in the countryside around the Icelandic capital before taking you to the beautiful Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall (fed from the meltwater from the Langjökull glacier) and the Geysir hot spring. All in, the tour lasts about nine hours so it’s a full, active day.

Alternatively, this 11-hour tour will pick you up from your hotel before taking you to all of the highlights of the Golden Circle. To end the day, you will go on a 1-hour horseback ride through the lava fields and experience the beauty of Iceland on the back of a spirited Icelandic horse before being dropped off back at your hotel.

Day 1.  Reykjavik – Kálfhóll farm

Pick up at BSÍ Bus station in Reykjavik at 18:00, where our bus will transfer you and your fellow riders to Kálfhóll, where horses and staff are waiting for us. After a lovely introductory meal where we get to know each other, we relax and rest so we are well prepared for the adventure ahead of us.

Day 2. Kálfhóll – Thjórsá glacier river – Sandlækjamýri

After an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits, we start our ride along the pleasant trail at Thjórsá glacier fed river. We leave the horses at Sandlækjarmýri field and drive to Kálfhóll. This day is the perfect start to get to know your horse and the Icelandic way of trail riding in a relaxed atmosphere.  (approximately 15 km)

Day 3. Kálfhóll – Sandlækjarmýri – Kálfhóll

We leave Kálfhóll farm and drive back to the horses.  From there we head off to the fertile farmlands of neighboring community Hrunamannahreppur. We drive spare horses along in a free running herd, enabling us to change our mount regularly and traveling at a brisk space. We cross the well know Salmon River Stóra-Laxá and stop for our picnic lunch at Hrunaréttir, a corral used for the annual sheep round-up in autumn. We continue our ride on good trails, towards the majestic canyon Brúarhlöð where milky green water passes through bizarre rock formations. Our ride ends at Brúarhlöð and we drive to the Kálfhóll Farm, where we spend the night. (approximately 30 km)

Da y 4.  Kálfhóll – Gullfoss – Kálfhóll

We continue our ride on soft trails ideal for tölting, alongside Hvítá River we follow the ever deepening canyon on to the impressive Golden Waterfall Gullfoss. The name “Gullfoss” means “Golden waterfall” in English, and it is named after the golden hue that the waterfall takes on during sunrise and sunset. Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland and is known for its powerful and dramatic appearance, with water falling a total of 32 meters (105 feet) in two stages.  We will have our lunch break at Gullfoss before we ride back to Kálfhóll where we spend the night. (approximately 20 km)

Day 5.   Haukadalur – Haukadalsheiði – Kálfhóll

Our ride takes us through Haukadalur valley with its beautiful birch forest. Cross clear little streams on the way and enjoy the rich vegetation of wild mountain flowers that bloom during high summer. While you ascend to a highland plateau you will notice the changes in nature as you reach higher ground. A breathtaking view of the mountain ranges and glaciers of the highland around awaits you when you reach the top of Haukadalsheiði. Rest of the day is spent in the Geysir area. You have plenty of time to explore this highly interesting area with its countless bubbling hot springs. (approximately 18 km)

Day 6. Geysir – Tungufellsdalur – Kaldbakur – Kálfhóll We leave the Geysir area and ride along green pastures back to the bridge at Brúarhlöð canyon where we cross mighty Hvítá River. Now we head towards the interior and follow beautiful Tungufellsdalur valley onto Hrunaheiðar heath plateau and we experience riding along the edge of civilization. Our horses spend the night at Kaldbakur Farm, we drive to the Secret Lagoon for relaxing bath in the geothermal pool and then drive to Kálfhóll and spend the night. (approximately 30 km)

Day 7. Kálfhóll – Kaldbakur – Hrepphólar – Kálfhóll  – Reykjavík  

Our last day of riding includes yet again terrific scenery. Today we follow good riding tracks past Mt. Galtafell. We cross River Laxá before we reach Sandlækjarmýri. We turn towards the banks of Thjórsá River and follow them to Kálfhóll Farm. Here we say goodbye to our guides, staff, and horses and return to Reykjavík BSÍ, approx. arrival at 20:00.

• During the ride full board is provided. Our menu consists of a large breakfast and traditional Icelandic meals (fish or lamb). Vegetarian meals are available if requested when booking. All riders make their own packed lunch from the breakfast table.
• Alcoholic beverages are not included in the tour price and are hard to get in the highlands. They can be bought at a reasonable price in the Duty-Free Store at Keflavik Airport upon arrival.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. “In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
