Gyptian (born 25 October 1983) – real name Windel Beneto Edwards – is a Jamaican reggae singer. His musical calling came at the age of seven when he began singing in church.

The young Gyptian was introduced by his promoter father to Mr. Wong, a record producer from Portmore, St. Catherine, who helped him to hone his sound. The singer’s stage name came from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and styling the hair on his chin like an Egyptian pharaoh. Gyptian’s style of reggae has been labelled lovers rock and roots reggae. His musical and lyrical style has been compared to fellow Jamaican artists such as Sizzla, Beres Hammond and Luciano.

Gyptian released his first album “My Name is Gyptian” via VP Records in September 2004. In 2005, Gyptian had two hits with “Is There A Place” and “Serious Times”, and in 2006 he was nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards. Other well-known hits include “Beautiful Lady” and ballad “Mama, Don’t Cry”.

Gyptian’s biggest hit and most well-known song is “Hold Yuh", which was released in 2010. It became a multi-chart hit worldwide. The official remix for the song features rapper Nicki Minaj, which spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. Gyptian also released an album of the same name, gaining him more chart success in the US. “Hold Yuh” has been remixed by several EDM producers, including dubstep producer Diplo and Toddla T.

His fourth album “Sex, Love and Reggae” was released in October 2013 and debuted at number one in the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.

Gyptian is a wonderful Reggae singer that is even better seen live. He is a thirty year old Jamaican man with a powerful voice and high intellegence that shows through his lyrics. His songs and lyrics are not for younger crowds, he does promote love and political awareness throughout his shows. The audience is more on the mature side of young adults to older adults, but almost never any young children. His two popular songs "Serious Times" and "Mama" have helped propel him to the top of charts and become a well known artist.

Gyptian is also very laid back and relaxed during his shows. He interacts and jokes around with the crowd and lets everybody know that he is grateful that they have come. Some crowds are known to smoke certain things at these concerts, but is not encouraged. His success is quickly spreading into international places and giving him well deserved fame. He has even had famed rapper Nicki Minaj on his official remixes. He is sure to be a hit in the United States very soon.

Windel Beneto Edwards better known by his stage name of Gyptian is primarily a reggae singer yet over his career he has also dabbled in the genres of roots and dancehall. These are all genres affiliated with his homeland of Jamaica so there is no wonder as to why Gyptian seems to have such a natural grasp of them.

His upbringing has had clear influence on his sound and life and he speaks passionately about his parents and his home country between the tracks which seems to energise the audience even more. There is no doubt that the reggae tones sound incredibly authentic and he seems to bring a dose of caribbean sunshine to the rather dark venue. The lighting and stage decoration also help to keep the mood light as the crowds are drenched in hazy purples, pinks and blues whilst Windel croons through the likes of 'Hold You' and 'Beautiful Lady'. The whole crowd are slow jamming much to Gyptian's delight as he plays a final slice of sunshine in the form of 'Selah' before briskly exiting.

Gyptian was phenominal as i knew he would be,he was completely on top form and his velvet voice was exceptional. I am very upset, though, as we had to wait an hour and a half later than stated for Gyptian to come on stage by that time we had to leave. We had a mere few minutes to see him as our train back to the Wirral was due in 10 minutes time. I paid £81 for the tickets and traveled miles to see my number one artist only to be completely deverstated that we had to leave. We ended up missing the last train home and was stranded in Manchester. Gyptian, as usual, was fantastic. We just wish we could have seen the whole event.

Went to see Gyptian last night in Manchester at the band on the wall, we had to wait an hour and a half until he came on, then he went off suddenly he never thanked anyone for going to the venue there was no on core it was a waste of money.

Loved it!!! He is an amazing performer and the Vibe was great..really good night. Cant wait to see him again. Will definitely book again if he comes to birmingham again ☺

Show was Cancelled, not sure why but I didn't go to find put. I hope in the future he do another show with him being present.

Beres Hammond UK Tour With Marcia Griffiths and Morgan Heritage

For the first time ever, The King of Lovers Rock, Queen of Reggae and Royal Family of Reggae have been brought together in the UK for a tour that will see them entertain crowds in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Huddersfield.

Base Incorporated would like to announce the Beres Hammond & Friends UK Tour, taking place during July, 2013.

Leading the regal line up is headliner Beres Hammond AKA The King of Lover's Rock. Since his first UK appearance 20 years ago, Hammond has repeatedly performed to sold-out crowds across the country.

Considered by many to be one of Jamaica's finest contemporary vocalists, his long reign has enabled him to appeal to many generations. Whether Hammond's song lyrics are being quoted online by Rihanna, or he is performing alongside other reggae veterans, hits such as They Gonna Talk, Rockaway and Tempted to Touch have enabled the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter to reach both young and old.

Base Incorporated MD, Fred Annan said: Base Incorporated has been bringing Beres Hammond to the UK for over a decade. This year we wanted to take it to an unprecedented level and who better to team him up with but, the undisputed Queen of Reggae and the Royal Family of reggae? This tour will set a new high in concerts which will be hard to surpass, even for us.

Joining Beres on tour will be Marcia Griffiths AKA The Queen of Reggae. With a career spanning more than four decades, she is the most commercially successful female reggae artist in history.

Griffiths scored a British top 5 with Young, Gifted and Black alongside Bob Andy in 1970 and was later well known as one third of the I-Threes, Bob Marley's backing vocalists. Since then, she has continued to wow crowds with her brilliant live performances around the world.

The reggae dynasty continues with the addition of Morgan Heritage AKA The Royal Family of Reggae, bringing their brand of roots reggae music to the five-date tour.

The children of reggae artist Denroy Morgan ' Peetah, Una, Gramps, Lukes and Mr Mojo collectively make up the talented and highly respected band, whose hits include Down By The River, and Don't Haffi Dread. Originally from the US, Morgan Heritage mix their influences of R&B and Hip Hop with reggae and their stage shows are legendary worldwide.

The Jamaican reggae superstar and undisputed king of lovers rock returns to the Broward Center for another 2-night stand as summertime winds down.

Famous for his soulful vibe and smoky-sweet, bourbon-on-the-rocks vocals, this Grammy Award–nominated singer-songwriter known as the “Otis Redding of Reggae” has a hit list that stretches for miles and includes the songs “Tempted to Touch,” “I Feel Good,” “Putting Up Resistance,” “Rockaway,” “No Disturb Sign” and many more.

Beres was born Hugh Beresford Hammond on August 28, 1955, in Annotto Bay, in the Jamaican province of St. Mary. Hammond grew up listening to his father’s collection of American R&B (Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, etc.) and jazz, and also fell in love with native Jamaican music during the ska and rocksteady eras; his primary influence was Alton Ellis, and he also listened to the likes of Peter Tosh, the Heptones, and Ken Boothe.

Beres Hammond’s Forever Giving Thanks tour celebrates ‘Emancipendence’

Fans of the King of Lovers Rock, Beres Hammond, will get an opportunity to be up close with the legend on August 1, 3 and 4 when he performs at a trio of concerts in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, presented by Jammin Reggae Fest.

As Hammond continues his successful 'Forever Giving Thanks Tour 2024', these three stops will have an added layer significance by being part of Jamaica's Emancipation and pre-Independence celebrations.

"I have been looking forward to this tour for a long time and I know that the fans are ready to receive. I can't wait to connect with my loyal fans and I continue to give thanks to them for supporting me and being an important part of my musical journey from back then until now," the superstar reggae singer shared.

"Forever Giving Thanks is a great name for this tour and kudos to whoever came up with the name. That is my name and nature. I don't have a song with that title yet ... but who knows when that can happen," Hammond said.

The first concert takes place on Thursday, August 1 -- Emancipation Day in Jamaica -- at College Street Music Hall, in New Haven, Connecticut. There, Hammond will be joined by singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mikey Spice.

On Saturday, August 3, Hammond and his Harmony House band perform at the Coney Island Amphitheater in Brooklyn, New York. The following day, Dr Beres Hammond, who received the honorary credentials from The University of the West Indies last November, will write and deliver the musical prescription that has been the healing balm for fans throughout the decades. A full house is expected at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), located at 1 Center St, Newark, New Jersey.

George Crooks, the veteran New York-based concert promoter of Jammins Productions, says that he "is thrilled to be bringing the in-demand Beres Hammond to these three venues".

Hammond, who has been nominated twice in the Best Reggae Album category of the Grammy Awards for his albums One Love, One Life and Music is Life , has received many awards and accolades throughout his illustrious career which began in the 1970s.

In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the Government in recognition of his "exceptional and dedicated contribution to the Jamaican music industry".

Hammond's extensive catalogue of hits includes She Loves me now , Tempted to Touch , What One Dance Can Do , Putting up Resistance , Can You Play Some More , Sweet Lies , and No Disturb Sign .

Musical genius Mikey Spice, who plays 22 instruments, including the saxophone, trumpet, flute and harp, started singing in his father's church from he was seven years old. Known for his exceptional baritone, the Born Again singer's close to four decades in the music business has produced an enduring catalogue of hit songs.
