The  South Corsica boat tour  starts along the  Nelson Bay  from the luxury  Porto Rafael   Village  up to Punta Sardegna. After about 35 minutes of navigation, we reach the inhabited  Island of Piana  where we can do a first swim break. You will be amazed by the transparency of the sea and the white sandy seabed.

CAPRERA FULL DAY

If you love wild nature and pristine beaches, Caprera is your next place to visit in Sardinia

The Caprera full day boat tour can be both shared or private. It departs from Palau port at 9.30 am and it last about 6 hours. The tour includes a tasty aperitif on board with a fine selection of local and seasonal products and white wine. We usually do our first pause in the beautiful beach of Cala Coticcio (aka Tahiti). It is definitely a must to see if you are in Sardinia. Here we will drop the anchor at ca. 50 mts away from the shore, in accordance with the park regulation. If you like the marine life, this is also one of the best spots for snorkeling in the Archipelago of La Maddalena and you will be sourrended by big groups of curious fish.

We continue the boat tour toward the south of Caprera and we may do a second stop in one of the amazing beaches between Cala Brigantina, Cala Portese and Cala Andreani. We will decide it according to your preferences and weather conditions.

You will make the third pause in one of the small bays on the west side of Caprera, the one that faces la Maddalena island. Reaching La Maddalena by ferry

Reaching La Maddalena by ferry is really easy! It only takes 15 minutes from Palau , and the Delcomar company offers routes every half hour throughout the day.

As for prices , you only need to take a look at the fares . Keep in mind that a round-trip ticket for an adult in summer costs €8.70 , or €7.40 leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday (weekend ticket).

If you choose the ferry as your means of transportation to reach La Maddalena from Palau, you have two options:

1 – Travel by car

In this case, the ticket is around €20 round trip (ferry + car) . With your car, you can independently explore the island of La Maddalena and Caprera and reach the most remote beaches and spectacular viewpoints.

However, you will need to make sure to drive carefully and obey the traffic rules on the island. To get around La Maddalena by car you will find directions to both the beaches and Caprera.

However, remember that finding parking near the beaches is difficult if you don’t move early in the morning, especially in high season.

2 – Traveling without a car

It is about 10 kilometers southeast of Santa Teresa Gallura and about 50 kilometers west of Olbia and has a small marina, making it an excellent starting point for boat trips to La Maddalena and other nearby destinations.

Here it is possible to rent boats or join group or private tours to La Maddalena .

In particular, several catamaran tours depart from Porto Pozzo although included among the offerings from nearby Santa Terena Gallura, a town much better known touristically.

If you want to explore the beauty of the Archipelago, doing it from the sea is the perfect choice!

Depending on your budget, the number of people and your tastes, you will have several options to choose from. If you prefer a shared experience , you can opt for a motorboat trip. If, on the other hand, you would like a more intimate and personalized experience , you can choose a yacht or dinghy for a private tour, as well as a ride on a vintage sailboat or gozzo .

Standard 7-hour La Maddalena excursions allow you to explore the beautiful islands of the archipelago. Generally you can choose between La Maddalena or Palau as your starting point and you will reach the islands of Santa Maria, Budelli and Spargi.

La Maddalena boat tours vary in price depending on the type of tour, the options available, and the season.

Here is a general overview of prices:

• Standard 7-hour mini-cruise tours , departing from La Maddalena, cost from €50 for boats that accommodate multiple passengers, up to €130 for smaller boats, up to 12 people.
• Sailing boat tours start at about €95 up to €140 per person .
• Vintage gozzo tours, which can accommodate up to 7 participants, are priced at about 120 €.
• Tours by motorboat , with a capacity of up to 300 participants , on the other hand, cost about 65 €.
• For dinghy tours with an aperitif, the price is around 100 € . If you wish to rent a private dinghy for snorkeling, the cost can go up to about 700 € in total, to be divided among up to 10 people.

It is important to keep in mind that these prices can vary depending on the tour operator, but also depending on where you are located to start your trip to the archipelago and especially the season (August prices are higher than May prices).

For example, excursions from Palau start at around €50 for 7-hour tours, with 5 quick or shorter stops at Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, La Maddalena and Caprera. If you prefer an experience aboard luxurious catamarans , the price can exceed 120 € per person. Instead, to rent a private sailing boat costs around 1,000 € for an entire group .

If you are in Santa Teresa Gallura , options include cruises and catamaran tours, with prices ranging from 60 € to 90 € , depending on the number of participants.

For an experience on a motor yacht to La Maddalena from Baja Sardinia , on the other hand, the price is 150 € per person.

On the other hand, a catamaran tour of the Maddalena Archipelago from Cannigione , with a tasting included, costs €130 .

From Olbia , it is possible to join an all-day cruise (10 hours) at a cost of only 120 € .

For snorkeling excursions from Porto Pollo , with transfer included, the price is around 100 € . Most excursions include snorkeling stops and often include mask and fins in the tour price.

If you want to experience the thrill of visiting the Marine Reserve, right up close, the scuba diving cost from €65 for those who are already certified, while for those trying it for the first time, the cost can go up to €150 .

Finally, for a tour with wine tasting and typical dishes lasting about 6 hours, to discover northern Sardinia in an authentic way, the price is around 300 € .

What can you see in La Maddalena archipelago?

The main island of the archipelago is an enchanting place with white sandy beaches .

You can explore its historic center with its narrow streets, colorful buildings and traditional atmosphere, strolling around and stopping at local craft stores, cafes and restaurants.

And still discover its typical architecture that allows you to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this fantastic area.

Another place not to miss is the Church of St. Mary Magdalene , one of the island’s main religious attractions. From the 18th century, it is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of the island. The building has a plain white facade, but inside it offers unique frescoes and decorations of great artistic value.

As soon as you reach the island, the first place you will get to know is La Maddalena’s main marina: the Port of Cala Gavetta . It is the ideal starting point for boat excursions to the archipelago and offers a splendid view of the sea.

On a trip to the island, you cannot miss a stop at the Sobborgo di Moneta , a characteristic residential neighborhood of La Maddalena. The place is ideal for immersing yourself in the daily life of the island and discovering corners less frequented by tourists.

The island has a rugged coastline with numerous bays, beaches and coves. Its vegetation is typically Mediterranean, with maquis, junipers, pines and olive trees.

Caprera is famous for being the home of Giuseppe Garibaldi during the last years of his life. Garibaldi bought the island in 1855 and built his home there, now known as the Giuseppe Garibaldi House Museum .

It is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and outdoor sports. The island offers numerous hiking trails to explore its wild charms, including the trail to Punta Rossa .

As anticipated, Caprera is connected to La Maddalena by a footbridge , so it can be easily reached by car or bicycle.

The other islands of the archipelago

• Budelli . This small island is famous for its Pink Beach, one of the icons of the archipelago. The beach owes its distinctive color to a marine organism called minio. To preserve its fragile ecosystem, access to the beach is currently prohibited. Budelli is nonetheless fascinating to admire from the sea.
• Santa Maria . This is the northernmost island in the archipelago and offers enchanting beaches and wild nature. Here you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the archipelago and relax on its beaches, such as Cala Santa Maria Beach and Spiaggia dei Due Mari.
• Spargi . This island is known for its heavenly beaches. One of its main attractions is Cala Corsara , a hidden beach with white sand and turquoise waters. Spargi also offers other breathtaking beaches, such as Cala Granara Beach and Cala Connari Beach.
• Santo Stefano . This island was once a military base, but is now uninhabited. It is possible to visit it, along with its hidden coves.
• Razzoli . This small island is famous for its lighthouse, which offers a panoramic view of the archipelago. Razzoli is also characterized by fascinating rock formations and wild nature.

There are a number of spectacular beaches in the Maddalena archipelago, famous for their clear waters. Some of the most popular beaches include Spiaggia Rosa (also known as Spiaggia del Cavaliere), Spiaggia del Principe , Cala Coticcio, Cala Corsara , and Cala Napoletana Beach.

Fortresses and historical sites

There are also several forts and historical sites to visit in the archipelago.

• Fort Cappellini . Located on the island of Caprera, this fortress dates back to the 19th century and is one of the most significant historical sites in the archipelago.
• Fort Santa Maria . Built in the 18th century, the fort played a crucial role in defending the coast against pirate raids. Today it houses the Garibaldino National Museum of Caprera, dedicated to Italian national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.
• Fort Arbuticci . Located on the island of Caprera, this fort was built in the 19th century during the period of Savoy rule.
• Rupe Battery . Visitors can explore the site and admire its military architecture.
• Talmone Battery . Built in the 19th century, it offers panoramic views of the sea and surrounding coastline.

When is the best time to visit La Maddalena?

The best time to visit La Maddalena depends on your personal preferences and the type of activities you want to do. However, the archipelago is generally busiest during the summer months, from June to September . Temperatures during this period are comfortable, averaging 25-30°C per day , and the water is warm, perfect for swimming and water sports.

Late June through August are the peak season months for tourists. The days are long and sunny, and the archipelago hosts many activities and events.

Travel tips

• Before you leave, plan your trip to La Maddalena . Decide how many days you want to spend, what you want to visit, and book any boat trips or accommodations in advance to ensure availability.
• Check the accommodation options available on La Maddalena Island if you want to spend more days in the archipelago and start your excursions from there.
• It is not recommended to scuba dive 24 hours before an airplane flight , as nitrogen in the body may form bubbles within the tissues due to the lower atmospheric pressure aboard the plane, which may hinder blood flow.
• During the summer, temperatures can be high, so wear light clothing , hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Remember to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly to protect your skin from UV rays.
• During your visit to La Maddalena, respect your surroundings . Avoid leaving garbage on the beaches or in the sea, and respect the archipelago’s protected area conservation signs and regulations.
• Bring essential items for your boat excursion, including sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, a swimsuit and a reusable water bottle. You should also bring a waterproof bag to protect your belongings from splashing water.

About the Maddalena Archipelago

The Archipelago della Maddalena is composed by seven main islands. The bigger ones; Maddalena and Santo Stefano are inhabited. The remaining ones; Caprera, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli are not.

When you do a boat day trip to the islands, this will usually take you to beaches in the uninhabited islands.

There used to be military bases on these islands so you will still be able to see abandoned buildings and lighthouses, which adds to the rugged atmosphere of the location.

The Archipelago della Maddalena today is a protected marine park , with a guardian living on Budelli island. 

It’s not everyday that you get to visit islands where there are no cities, towns or traces of civilisation, combined to the beautiful crystal clear water and white sandy beaches, it makes for quite a magical day trip.

When is the best time to visit the Maddalena Archipelago?

Despite popular belief, it’s not summer . Whilst in the months of July and August the weather will be fantastic with hot and sunny days, the crowds of people will be unbearable.

Ok unbearable is a strong word, but you get what I mean.

Tourists from both Italy and all over the world come to Sardinia in summer to enjoy these beautiful beaches, which makes your experience on a pristine white sandy beach not quite as enjoyable when there is no space for you on the beach to lie down.

Also, when it comes to visiting the islands you often won’t be able to visit the most beautiful beaches during your boat tour, as there are too many other boats around to dock close to the beach.

Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi in Sardinia

My personal recommendation is to visit in June, the weather is already warm, the days are still long and even if the water might be a little chilly, the beaches will be considerably less busy.

In September the weather is still similar and the water will be warmer, however the days are much shorter and you will have to end your days at the beach too early in my opinion.

I don’t recommend visiting in full winter , as the tourist season will be over and most services, restaurants and bars will be closed.

Regardless of the time of year, I can guarantee that visiting these beautiful islands will be one of the highlights of your Italy itinerary .

Our boat trip in the Maddalena Archipelago

We went on a boat day trip with the catamaran of Sport Outdoor Viaggi . We set off around 10:30AM and headed straight for Cala Soraja, in the island of Spargi.

This beach is a personal favourite of mine, since it’s one of the closest from Palau to get to and you will feel like you’re swimming in a natural pool. 

We spent about an hour relaxing on the beach and when we got back on the boat our crew Alberto and Giorgio had a cheese and salami aperitif ready for us.

There’s nothing like swimming around in the beautiful sea to make you hungry! There is another bay in Spargi island which I personally really like, called Cala Corsara.

The beach isn’t as pretty as that of Cala Soraja but there are rocks that you can climb and dive off from.

The boat set off again while we were still nibbling on our aperitif, cruising past the island of Budelli. We cruised past a beach called “Spiaggia Rosa”, which means Pink Beach.

This because back in the day the sand used to be pink thanks to corals present in it, but due to tourists taking away he pink sand with them as a souvenir, access to it has been closed since 1994.

Boats can only cruise past it beyond the line of buoys, 70 metres away from the shore. Nobody is allowed to walk on the beach or swim there, in the hope that over time the pink sand will regenerate itself.

The Natural Pools of the Maddalena National Park

On the island of Budelli you can also find the main beach of the Maddalena Archipelago; “il Cavaliere”.

The area in front of this beach is often also called the “Manto della Madonna”, the natural pools or “Madonna’s Harbour”.

This because this area is sheltered between the islands of Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli, and the water is always calm. Even on very rough windy days you can find calm and crystal water in the natural pools.

Swimming in these natural pools should feature on everyone’s Italy bucket list .

It’s referred to as multiple pools because due to the variety of the seabed (algae, sand, rocks etc) when you look at it from above it looks like lots of little pools.

In my opinion, this area is the most beautiful, but if you’re visiting Sardinia in July or August it is so overrun with boats as to not be enjoyable anymore.

Which is why we only did a short stop in Budelli and then went on to Cala Lunga in the island of Razzoli. In Razzoli we did a longer stop.

While we spent an hour or so swimming around in the crystal clear water and exploring the island, Alberto and Giorgino prepared an awesome pasta lunch for us.

We stayed in Cala Lunga for lunch and a bit of post lunch break before moving on to our next beach destination.

We cruised past the abandoned lighthouse of Razzoli, and then stopped in a beautiful little lagoon, where we were the only boat there.

Santa Maria

The fourth island, Santa Maria, we didn’t visit on this trip as we didn’t have enough time.

The Sport Outdoor Viaggi catamaran usually does three stops, and these always change depending on the wind and boat traffic.

Generally speaking these are usually first Spargi, then the natural pools and as final stop either Santa Maria or Razzoli, but this can change from day to day.

 Towards 4pm we started heading back to Palau. The journey back is a bit long, especially if you do it by sail, maybe an hour or so, but you can relax and sunbathe on the nets of the catamaran as it sails along.

Where to stay for your Maddalena Arcipelago boat tour

As previously mentioned the Archipelago della Maddalena is a national protected park and most of the islands are uninhabited. You are better off staying the nearby towns of Palau or Maddalena.

While Maddalena is a bit more lively you will be stuck on a small island with only one main town, if in the evening you wanted to go out somewhere you would have to get the ferry.

The ferry from Palau, on the mainland of Sardinia, to Maddalena costs 10 EUR per person return, if you add a car or scooter it’s even more expensive.

I personally prefer Palau even if it’s smaller as a town because you can easily drive around to other beaches or towns.

In Palau I would recommend staying in this lovely AirBnb  (Click here to get $30 off your first AirBnb booking !) close to the town centre, and not just because my mum is the one that rents it (lol).

Seriously though, it depends if you will have a car or not, because you can get villas in “Palau Alta” with stunning views over the Archipelago but you will need to drive to the beach which is a pain.

If you get a place on the beach will then be a bit far from the town if you want to have dinner out in the evening. I like being central because you get a bit of the best of both worlds.

Where to eat

During the day boat tour of the islands you will usually have lunch provided for by your boat crew.

Before booking a tour make sure to check if lunch is included, if it isn’t you will have to bring something with you as there are no restaurants or cafes in the islands you will visit.

However once you get back to Palau after your board tour there are some amazing restaurants where you can have dinner. Some of the best restaurants in town in my opinion are:

“ Il Porticciolo “ is my personal favourite. It’s not the fanciest of restaurants, however the portions are huge and the final bill is always cheap. It’s also easily accessible as it’s just along the harbour in the town centre.

If you want an ice cream while you’re in Palau the only place you should get one is from “ La Gelateria dell’Angolo “ .

I’m Italian, I have eaten my fair share of gelato in my life so trust me when I say this is one of the best artisanal ice cream places in Italy.

Final thoughts on doing a Maddalena Archipelago boat tour

The islands of the Arcipelago della Maddalena are really an extraordinary place to visit, and if you get the opportunity I highly recommend you do a boat trip there.

It is the perfect destination for someone looking for a Maldive-like holiday, without actually going all the way there!

Hi, glad you found it useful! There are direct flights from Rome to Olbia (the closest airport to Palau and Maddalena) that take around 40 minutes. You can also get a ferry but that will usually be either overnight or during a large chunk of the day. The boat tour prices range from 80 EUR to 120 EUR depending on the time of year, in May it should be around 70 - 80 EUR. Hope you find it useful and that you have a great wedding & honeymoon! :)
