If you're in search of a peaceful retreat from the hectic pace of modern life, start planning your trip to the San Juan Islands now. This small, scattered archipelago is a bucolic mélange of sustainable farms and attractive B&Bs, where the pace hasn't changed much since the 1950s.

Peace, calm and communing with nature are the main reasons people come here. In laid-back but quietly industrious rural communities, motorists offer salutatory waves, and you can leave your bike unlocked outside the grocery store and still expect it to be there when you get back.

Don't arrive in search of shopping malls or a frenetic nightlife; come instead for kayaking, whale watching, beachcombing, sailing, clamming and skillfully concocted farm-to-table cuisine paired with local wines. Get ready to feel a world away while still vacationing in continental America.

When is the best time to go to the San Juan Islands?

Cocooned in the Puget Sound between northwest Washington and Canada's Vancouver Island, the San Juans have a relatively mild climate year-round. The best time to visit for dry, sunny and warm weather is between May and September. This is when most businesses are open and conditions are perfect for bracing outdoor activities like kayaking and cycling. However, it's also when the islands are most crowded.

To avoid the crush but still enjoy fine weather, come in September after Labor Day weekend.

The rainiest seasons are fall and winter, although heavy snow and subzero temperatures are rare. Accommodation rates are cheaper in the off-season, save for a short spike at Christmas and New Year.

Is it easy to get to and around the San Juan Islands?

In terms of getting to the islands, you have two options: air or boat. The ferry is by far the most popular method, and the journey from the port of Anacortes – a 90-minute drive north of Seattle – is beautiful. There are more than 170 islands in the archipelago, and regular car ferries serve the largest four: Lopez, Shaw, Orcas and San Juan Island.

The three main islands – Lopez, San Juan, and Orcas – are small enough to cycle around, and each has a bike rental outlet. San Juan Island and Orcas run seasonal shuttle buses between May and September, linking the ferry terminals with the main sights. For convenience, many people bring their own cars.

There are regular flights in small aircraft and seaplanes between the San Juan Islands and Seattle, Anacortes and Bellingham. The nearest big international airport is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac).

How to pick the best San Juan island for you

San juan island: best for history.

Welcome to the site of one of America's most improbable and little-known diplomatic spats.

The San Juan Islands' 15 minutes of fame came in 1859 during the so-called Pig War, a border dispute between the British and the Americans that almost triggered an all-out conflict. The incident, in which the only casualty was a foraging pig shot by an overzealous American farmer, led to the building of two military redoubts on San Juan Island to guard the then-ambiguous border between the US and Canada .

Today, British Camp and American Camp still stand on opposite sides of the island, incorporated into an atmospheric national historical park  as a testament to a war that – fortunately – never happened. Old barracks, interpretative panels and park rangers help explain the fascinating history.

San Juan Island is also known for its wineries, cideries and artisan farms raising everything from lavender to alpacas.

Lopez Island: best for cycling

With its flat terrain, traffic-calmed country roads and friendly motorists, Lopez is an idyllic place to head out on two wheels. Leave the car at home (or at least park it at the ferry terminal in Anacortes) and pretend you're in the Netherlands .

Covering 30 sq miles and supporting a population of less than 3000, Lopez's landscapes are punctuated with sunburnt fields, handsome wooden barns, curvaceous beaches and rustling tracts of forest. With no highways or traffic lights to worry about, it's a cyclist's dream. Indeed, it's rare to see a car traveling more than 45mph.

Lopez Bicycle Works in "the village" rents a full gamut of two-wheeled machines between May and September. This is also the best place to organize fishing charters and kayaking trips. The island is renowned for its pebbly sand beaches, where playful seals linger.

Two people kayaking in Deer Harbor, Orcas Island, Washington

Orcas Island: best for kayaking

The most rugged of the three "big" San Juans, Orcas' jagged coastline, with its bluffs, bays and scattered islets, is rich pickings for kayakers. Stick close to the shore, and you'll be paddling through clear, sheltered waters kissed by mossy tracts of temperate rainforest. Look out for seals, eagles and perhaps an orca or two on the horizon.

If kayaking away from the coast is a worry, join an organized trip. Shearwater Adventures on Orcas is considered one of the best kayaking schools in the state and offers tours and lessons.

Orcas has a large state park with a recreational lake, several campgrounds and 38 miles of trails. Nearby is the archipelago's most illustrious hotel, the vintage 1906  Rosario Resort & Spa , complete with its own museum.

How much money do I need for the San Juan Islands?

Despite its reputation as a haven for rich yachters, the islands' varied facilities can cater to most budgets.

Although you won't find any Walmarts or cheap shopping malls, you will encounter reasonably priced bakeries and delis with enough ingredients to put together a rustic picnic.

For travelers on a budget, there's a hostel in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and camping possibilities on all four of the ferry-accessible islands. Several of the smaller paddle-in islands have primitive camping, too (reachable by private boat or kayak). All campgrounds have tent sites, while some larger places have full-utility sites for RVs.

While the more affluent crowd gets around by private boat, the hoi polloi utilizes Washington State Ferries – fares are refreshingly cheap, especially if you don't bring a car.

How many days do I need in the San Juan Islands?

A minimum of three days is recommended, longer if you want to spend quality time on all three of the main islands.

Are there any towns on the islands?

The only real town in the archipelago is San Juan Island's Friday Harbor, with a population of around 2000. Eastsound on Orcas and Lopez Village on Lopez are civic and commercial hubs that resemble small villages, equipped with shops, restaurants and accommodations.

Do bears live on the San Juan Islands?

There is no permanent bear population. Very occasionally, a lone black bear will swim over from Vancouver Island or the US mainland. They are usually caught and relocated.

Is Shaw Island worth a visit?

Shaw is the smallest of the four islands served by the public ferries. Accommodation-wise, it has an 11-berth campground ; food-wise, there's just one general store. With a couple of beaches and a small network of quiet roads, it makes for a pleasant afternoon spin on a bicycle. Otherwise, stick to the larger islands.

Which is the biggest island?

Orcas, but only by a smidgeon – it measures 57 sq miles compared to San Juan Island's 55 sq miles. In terms of population, San Juan Island has more people, nearly 9000 to Orcas' 6000.

Which is the best island for hiking?

Orcas Island, courtesy of the 5000-acre Moran State Park, has an abundance of trails crisscrossing the archipelago's most rugged terrain, including 2407ft Mt Constitution.

What local dishes should I taste?

Shellfish is the archipelago's signature food, particularly locally caught razor clams, crab, oysters and scallops. Backing them up are two Pacific Northwest staples, halibut and salmon, both fished since pre-Columbian times. If seafood isn't your thing, don't worry – the islanders rear their own cows, pigs and sheep, with Lopez Island lamb heading the bill in local restaurants.

An orca jumping out of the waters of Puget Sound

What are the best water activities?

Whale watching is hugely popular, and sightings of orca pods are almost guaranteed during the summer (May to October). There's even a good chance of spotting orca from the shoreline at San Juan Island's Lime Kiln Point State Park . Alternatively, whale-watching boat trips can be organized from Orcas and San Juan Island. Humpback, minke and gray whales also frequent local waters.

All three islands offer kayak rentals and tours. More experienced kayakers can progress along the Cascadia Marine Trail (CMT), a 160-mile sailing and paddling route of which the San Juans are an integral part. Many of the archipelago's more remote islands sport rustic CMT campsites equipped with landing areas, picnic tables and compost toilets, marked by official CMT signs.

Are there any non-athletic things to do?

San Juan Island has a whale museum , an art gallery, a museum and a winery with a tasting room . Orcas, Shaw and Lopez all have small historical museums, and The Rosario Resort on Orcas has a lovely spa .

My favorite thing to do in the San Juan Islands

The San Juans is the place I go for some "active relaxation," a place to switch off from world news and social media in favor of walking and running around quiet backroads and tree-rimmed coasts.

If I could bottle one experience, it would probably be the short, sharp 10-mile bike ride from the village of Eastsound to the top of Mt Constitution on Orcas Island. Taking in farmland, forest, shoreline, lakeside and mountainside on the way to the San Juans' highest point, I finish by climbing the observation tower on the summit, where island-speckled views stretch for miles over teal waters. If I had bionic vision, I would even be able to see my house – in Canada.

San Juan Islands with Backroads

Previous: Lewiston/Clarkston & Lake McMurray

Our hiking trips with Backroads have been terrific, and the San Juan Islands was no different.  With Backroads, we first did Alaska in 2018, then Scotland in 2019, and in 2021 we did a 6-day trip to the San Juan Islands and Olympic National Park.  We made some good friends along the way, but none better than John, Ann, Charlie, and Luise.  We have been together on these trips since we met on the Alaska trip.

Backroads trip leaders have been consistently great in terms of knowledge, friendliness, coordination, and flexibility.  Each day the trip leaders provide a one-sheet itinerary for the following day.  I have included a pic of each day’s itinerary.  The back of these sheets also includes some great insights on the history or other relevant nature on the things covered that day.  I only include here the front page, the itinerary itself, in very brief outline.  These are discussed with the group each day by the leaders in more detail.

San Juan Island

We met up with our Backroads leaders and our Backroads friends John, Ann, Charlie, and Luise at the Majestic Inn in Anacortes. The leaders loaded the Backroads vans with our luggage and we shuttled 5 minutes to the Anacortes ferry bound for San Juan Island . The ferry ride was smooth and provided good opportunity to catch up with our Backroads hiking pals who we hadn’t seen for two years because trips were cancelled the prior year due to COVID.

backroads travel san juan islands

Upon landing via ferry, the Backroads leaders shuttled us to a short, easy hike so we could get a hike in before it got too late.  The 4-mile hike started at American Camp which is a National Historic Park on the southeastern point of San Juan Island, and we hiked to South Beach along the coastline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca . The strait is part of Puget Sound, and the Canada/U.S. border line goes down its center, basically it divides Vancouver Island, Canada from Washington state. Beautiful views abound.

After the hike we shuttled to Friday Harbor , the hub of San Juan Island, and checked in to the awesome Friday Harbor House hotel. This is a swanky hotel in the middle of town and directly overlooking the harbor.

Friday Harbor House

We had an excellent dinner on the hotel patio where we got to meet some of the other folks on the hiking trip, and then we enjoyed drinks on the front lawn with fire pits and a beautiful harbor view. Weather was perfect.

Backroads Trip: San Juan Islands

We had breakfast at the Friday Harbor Inn with the Backroads hiking group, and then we went outside and packed a lunch from the lunch table items provided by Backroads.  Then to the ferry terminal within walking distance down town for a 30-minute private water taxi ride to Orcas Island .

Orcas Island Ferry

The hike for the day at Moran State Park on Orcas Island was to the summit of Mount Constitution , the highest peak in the San Juan Islands.  This was a tough hike to start, with a bit of steep elevation, but overall not a very hard hike.  It was challenging in distance at 4 miles up the 2,000 feet of elevation, for a total of 8 miles.  We were treated to some fantastic vistas of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and snow-capped Mt. Baker in the distance. At the summit we had our lunch and enjoyed the scenery.

Mount Constitution Orcas Island San Juan Islands

At the summit there was a cool stone tower to climb and explore.

After the hike we headed back to the awaiting water taxi.

Orcas Island San Juan Islands

Back at Friday Harbor we went in to town for dinner.  But, before dinner I enjoyed a jet-tub bubble bath in our room. Though, as I am not too familiar with bubble baths, I put just a tad too much bubble gel in the water and Emilie had to soon rescue me from the ever-growing blob of bubbles which were consuming me and the bathroom.

As with everywhere else this second summer of COVID, getting seats at a restaurant required patience.  We found only a 45-minute wait for a table for 6 at the good, but not great, San Juan Island Brewing Company where we could have beers in the beer garden while waiting for a table. The dinner was made more entertaining by our young server, who was very nice, but obviously very new at this kind of work and he was making some unintentionally comical errors with our order.  But the funniest thing was the very next morning when we went into a local gift shop and found our server behind the counter of the gift shop! He was much better at gift shop clerking.

We spent the end of our final night on Friday Harbor at the fire pit overlooking the harbor from the hotel.

Friday Harbor Hotel. San Juan Islands

Whidbey Island

Emilie and I woke up to our 30th wedding anniversary.  Hard to imagine a better place to be, or better people to be with!

After a great breakfast at the Friday Harbor Hotel, we left our bags outside our room for the Backroads leaders to gather and get onto the shuttle van for us.  We went into town to walk around and explore a bit before embarking on the ferry back to Anacortes, and shuttle to Whidbey Island , our final island destination (though not technically part of the San Juan islands it’s close enough for an amateur blog to include it).

The ferry arrived at Ebey’s Landing State Park on Whidbey Island around 1:00 P.M., and then embarked on the 3.5 mile Bluff Trail , a loop trail with some short-distance steep elevation gains, but nothing too difficult.  We got some great views of Puget Sound, and walked along the beach for the second part of the hike.

Anacortes Ferry San Juan Islands

After our hike we shuttled to our hotel for the evening.  We stayed at The Inn at Langley , one of the finest boutique inns ever!   The room and the private balcony overlooking the Saratoga Passage (an off-shoot of Puget Sound) were top-notch.  This is where everybody should spend their 30th anniversary!

Inn at Langley

Before settling, I really needed an appetizer before dinner.  So, I walked to Sprinklz Ice Cream and Coffee Shop nearby in town.  I had noticed this place from the shuttle van on the way to the inn.  It did not disappoint. Lots of cool retro candy, too.  While I was getting ice cream, Emilie enjoyed a bath in the room. I have a picture of that but Emilie said I couldn’t use it for the blog. Trust me, she enjoyed it.

Our Backroads leaders had secured dinner reservation for us all at Prima Bistro just down the street from the inn. Between us all, we ordered everything on the menu, and it was all excellent.

Whidbey Island

After dinner, a relaxing night at the inn, then off to bed. A fantastic 30th wedding anniversary!

Backroads Trip: San Juan Islands

Emilie and I opted to do the early morning short hike before breakfast.  About half of the hiking group opted for this.  It was a very easy hike but the pacific northwest woods are usually pretty nice to walk through regardless of difficulty or length.  This hike took us to the Pacific Yew Trail in Saratoga Woods . This was so casual we didn’t need backpacks. The highlight was the Waterman Erratic, a huge moss-covered boulder smack in the middle of the forest.

Pacific Yew Trail

Back at the Inn around 8:30 a.m. we were soon greeted by room service with our pre-ordered breakfast.  We ate our truly decadent breakfast out on our balcony before being pulled away kicking and screaming from the Inn at Langley. This ended our time on the San Juan Islands.

San Juan Islands by Bike

In September of 2020 I packed up my bike and took it to the San Juan Islands for a week. This story and video about my experience slipped through the cracks, along with a lot of other things in 202 0 . I’m finally digging it out to share with you…

I held out hope, all my fingers and toes crossed that the 2020 Croatia Bike & Boat Island Hopping adventure I was to lead in September would happen.

We all know this goes without saying: it did not.

Like nearly every other travel plan that was to be in 2020, it was postponed.

Croatia Bike & Boat

Rarely do I plan a trip a year in advance, and Croatia had been planned and sold out for nearly a year already. My disappointment stretched infinitely in so many directions. I wanted the adventure, I wanted to meet the participants, I wanted to revisit a country that stole my heart from the first minute I experienced it five years prior, I wanted the accomplishment of biking every day and exposing myself to the magic that encompasses all things adventure travel. Not to mention the fact that leading trips is part of my income; I needed it to work out.

But, Covid. When I made the impossible decision to postpone the trip, I was left with more than just a void in my calendar .

Grief

I travel as desperately and casually as one breathes air.

It’s part of me on both the inside and the outside. I have made travel my work. I have built my life around travel. I travel because it clears my mind, rejuvenates my energy, clarifies my desires. I travel because, like “ a fountain and a magnum of french champagne ,” it sets me right again. I’ve learned to be and stepped into who I am on the road ever since I was 18.

Travel is my foundation. Travel is my home.

And there I was, cancelling travel along with the rest of the world. Words could never be enough to describe what I was feeling.

In a desperate attempt to fill the void in my spirit, in my life, and in my calendar, I turned my eyes States-ward. There is a place I’ve been wanting to visit for decades, right here in our own beautiful USA backyard, and it happens to be within driving distance from my home in Montana.

San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands

I promised myself I wouldn’t postpone Croatia without having a Plan B. It’s a strange thing to say that the San Juan Islands was my Plan B, because it so easily deserves to be anyone’s Plan A.

I downloaded maps, started researching islands, and reached out to a friend (and JUMP Adventures participant) who lives in Anacortes, WA, which would be our jumping off point.

Since I’ve become nothing less than obsessed with bike tours in recent years , and because I had my heart set on it for Croatia, I designed this trip to be a bike tour.

San Juan Islands Bike Tour

It would be simple – get on the ferry from Anacortes and go island hopping, with bikes. We would visit three islands, spending two nights on each island, with goals of doing long rides on each island, eating well, and sleeping comfortably every night.

Since we would carry everything we needed in our bike panniers, we could leave these at our lodgings on the days of our longer bike rides.

It was a simple plan. And it turned out to be a simple trip. Even though it meant a deeply satisfying, deeply rewarding change in scenery and experience for me.

What I learned (again): We travel because we need it. Carve out time for travel, even during a pandemic, even into your own backyard. In simple words, travel is a culmination of simple acts, like marking the calendar, booking a hotel, and then another one, maybe buying some new gear, and eventually hitting the road.

Simple, close, safe, and so very deeply incredibly necessary for the soul.

San Juan Islands Itinerary 6 Days

(Links to all accommodations and lots of helpful resources are below)

Start: Anacortes, WA

We spent 3 nights camping at Washington Park Campground before we set off.

Washington Park Campground Review: Situated on a beautiful point that looks out at the San Juan Islands, it’s tucked into a gorgeous forest, yet minutes walk to the water, minutes drive from downtown Anacortes, clean bathrooms, overall highly recommended. Great starting point to visit Deception Pass State Park, hike up Mt. Erie, visit the town of Anacortes (eat at Gere-a-Deli, get any last minute bike-related gear at Bikespot).

San Juan Islands Bike Ferry

Days 1-2: Lopez Island

2 nights glamping (in a “Camp Nest”) at Lopez Farm Cottages

Lopez Farm Cottages Review: We stayed in a Camp Nest (super fun, super affordable, def recommend). We were a bit late in the season, so the (rather large and sometimes alarming) spiders had moved in while the tourists (and as such, the cleaning crew) were away. Other than that, and fearing for our lives on a super windy night surrounded by creaking trees that did not, in fact, fall onto our tent, we actually really loved the place. Clean bathrooms, hot water, gorgeous countryside views, welcoming common areas (uncrowded in September), a bit more than a mile out of town and a few miles from the ferry. It was quiet and truly lovely.

Thoughts on Lopez Island: This island is sparsely populated and you don’t really want to hit it in the off season, because almost all services are closed. Everything we were recommended to try or read reviews about online was closed, including coffee shops and restaurants. We opted for store bought salami and cheese for a picnic lunch on our long ride – which was actually the best ride we did on our whole trip. We had to rush to make it to the one store in town that was open, and we dined twice at the only open restaurant (Lopez Islander Resort) which was fine but left a little to be desired. If you go there, at least try the local red ale, which I enjoyed, and don’t miss the blackberries growing all along the road – it’s so easy to stop for a bite on the bike!

Lopez Island by bike

Days 3-4: San Juan Island (Friday Harbor)

2 nights at Earthbox Inn

Earthbox Inn Review: Earthbox Inn was just on the edge of downtown, giving it a fabulous location for walking the streets. If you go, definitely request a room in the newer (further back) buildings, as the closer, older ones proved damp and dark. Rooms are quite small but just barely big enough to fit bikes inside.

Thoughts on San Juan Island: We opted to go on a kayak tour with San Juan Outfitters out of Roche Harbor – we saw an eagle and a few seals, didn’t see any whales though. If you for sure want whales, I think you need to get on a whale watching boat. We enjoyed our beautiful sunny kayaking day regardless, said hi to Canada, which was so close to us (yet so very closed to us) I almost cried a few times. Friday Harbor is adorable and walkable. I recommend San Juan Island Brewing for pizza and beer, and Crows Nest Coffee.

Kayaking San Juan Islands

Days 5-6: Orcas Island

2 nights at Landmark Hotel Orcas (as my friend Ryan kindly pointed out to me, “it’s pronounced ‘OR-cuss’ not like the whale”)

Landmark Orcas Review: This was a bright and clean space in downtown, close to everything. If you get a 2-bdr unit like we did, you’ll be right on the water. The manager was super nice and I would stay here again, in another waterfront unit. Eastsound is about a 9-mile bike ride from the ferry, but it’s gorgeous and you can take a back road to stay away from the main traffic.

Thoughts on Orcas Island: This might have been my favorite island. Eat at Buck Bay Shellfish Farm – don’t miss it, it was the best seafood we had on the entire trip, not to mention it is an experience in itself. Go to Island Hoppin Brewery and enjoy a brew on their cozy patio.

Biking San Juan Islands

Day 7: Return to Anacortes

We biked back to the ferry and traveled back to Anacortes, truly sad to be leaving. We had a blissfully gorgeous experience and I would do it all again. As we did not work with an outfitter or guide but did all of our own planning, our entire trip (including 9 nights of accommodations, all activities, transportation – ferry and gas to and from Montana, and food) was around $850 per person.

We were fortunate enough to be able to leave our truck parked at our friend’s house in Anacortes, so we did not spend money on parking.

Have a question?

Experience quiet roads past historic farms and beautiful shorelines as you bike, kayak, and explore San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez Islands.

Biking on the San Juan Islands, the world seems both expansive and small at the same time. In the San Juans, to-do lists and busy schedules recede and are replaced by placid water, distant peaks, and the rhythm of simple fishing villages along the Washington shore. As your focus shifts, it is inexorably drawn to the vastness of the Pacific sprawling to the west, the magnificence of the North Cascades on the horizon and the broad open skies above. These idyllic and relaxing islands, with their temperate maritime climate, lush vegetation, stunning views, and perhaps even some Orcas as you move from island to island, offer an absolutely amazing location for your next active-travel cycling vacation.

The service, guides, hotels, and the scenery were all beyond any expectation. The rides were through spectacular forests with a pine tree smell that I'll only smell at Christmas. It sounds cliche, but it was literally a trip of a lifetime... It was all seamless and relaxing. Thank you again for a wonderful trip!!

The rides were challenging but incredibly well supported. I felt like a pro rider with the level of attention and accommodation. The guides were encouraging, knowledgeable and very patient. Food and accommodations were excellent and the trip experience making friends with the other guests makes this the best vacation I have ever taken.

My wife and I usually do trips on our own, but now realized that guided tours are the way to go! All the mistakes that you can make on your own were eliminated, and our guides had found some great attractions that we surely would have missed on our own.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA). From the airport, you can take the Bellair Airporter to Anacortes (we suggest making reservations by phone at 866-235-5247. See www.airporter.com for schedules). A one-way ticket costs $43 per person or $82 for a round trip.

Please note that the shuttle runs only four times each day, and it takes about two and a half hours to get to Anacortes (in Burlington, you will switch shuttles). In Anacortes, the shuttle can drop you off at the Shell Station in downtown Anacortes at 1312 Commercial Avenue. From here, it is a half mile to the Majestic Inn & Spa, where you will meet your guides on the first day of your trip. We recommend calling a taxi upon your arrival in Anacortes to take you and your luggage to the hotel of your choice.

If you choose to drive to Anacortes and need to leave a vehicle somewhere for the duration of the trip, we recommend parking it in the upper lot of the Anacortes Ferry Terminal Lot. The cost for the week is approximately $55. You must pay at one of the six electronic pay boxes with credit card before leaving the vehicle— parking spaces cannot be reserved in advance. After dropping off the car on the first day of the trip you should take a taxi to meet the group at the normal meeting location. On the last day of the trip, your guides can drop you and your luggage off at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal Lot to retrieve your vehicle.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Majestic Inn & Spa (419 Commercial Avenue, Anacortes, Washington) at 8:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Please come dressed in your cycling clothes with your riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. Also in a separate bag from your main luggage, have a set of street clothes and shoes so you can easily change into them for the post-ride ferry crossing. Your guides will acquaint you with your bike and ensure you a comfortable fit before setting out on today’s ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, the Lakedale Resort (360-378-2350), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. Taxis are available to the Washington State Ferry Terminal in Anacortes to meet the group. You will need to be at the ferry terminal no later than 11:30 AM in order to meet your guides and board the ferry. If you are unable to make it to the ferry terminal by 11:30 AM check the current ferry schedule ( www.wsdot.com/ferries/schedule , look for the summer sailing schedule) for departures to Lopez Island. You may call your guides or the Edenwild Inn to arrange transportation from the ferry landing.

Additional Departure Information

After a short ferry from San Juan Island, you will say farewell to your guides at 12:15 PM** at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. From here, we recommend reserving a ticket with the Bellair Airporter for transportation to the Sea-Tac Airport (we suggest making reservations by phone at 866-235-5247. See www.airporter.com for schedules). The cost is $43 per person, one-way (or $82 for a round-trip ticket from the airport). Your guides can help you find the Airporter pickup location at the ferry. The Airporter shuttle has a 1:05 PM departure time on our last day that arrives at Sea-Tac Airport at 3:45 PM - we recommend booking this shuttle unless you plan on spending more time in Anacortes. Please allow adequate connection time for any ongoing travel to accommodate possible traffic delays. **Please note that these times may shift by approximately 30 minutes either way depending on the ferry and Airporter schedules.

Ferry ride from Orcas Island to Anacortes

Rider Information

Rider Level: 2

Terrain: Hilly

The terrain is full of rolling hills, including some long, gradual grades and some short steep ones. The riding near Anacortes and on Lopez Island is the most gentle, and Orcas Island has the hilliest terrain. Many of the roads on the islands have a "chip seal" surface, which is a type of pavement treatment that is more rough than typical asphalt. This type of surface makes the riding slower and a bit more difficult for the distance when compared to asphalt roads you may be used to. San Juan Islands is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. For those eager to experience every mile but mindful of their physical limits, our electric bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution. Type 3+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.

Daily Average

21 miles | 33 kilometers

124 miles | 199 kilometers

1,332 feet | 405 meters

7,994 feet | 2,436 meters

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Schedule a massage or spa visit
  • Visit the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor or one of the other art & history museums located on the islands
  • Enjoy sight seeing and the varied terrain of the San Juan Islands on a horseback ride
  • Scenic hiking all over the islands
  • Witness firsthand the amazing ocean ecosystem while sea kayaking
  • Schedule a sunset wildlife cruise

It is located on Fidalgo Island and enjoys a milder, drier climate than other locations in the Pacific Northwest due to the rain shadow effect of the Olympic Mountains to the west. Take some time to visit nearby Mount Erie, Washington Park, or Deception Pass State Park. (If you are in downtown Seattle and need to get to Anacortes to meet the group for the trip start, you can still use the Bellair Airporter. Airporter shuttles depart from the Washington State Convention Center in downtown. Call 866-235-5247 or visit www.airporter.com to make arrangements.) This Stunning Pacific Northwest Destination Is Home to Idyllic Islands, Epic Whale-watching Tours, and Rustic Lodges

Hike, bike, eat, drink, and whale watch your way around Washington's beautiful San Juan Islands.

Watching a mother orca swim through mirror-smooth waters with her playful, leaping calves in tow. Slurping fresh oysters paired with wine made from island grapes. Cycling past country farms and kayaking along remote coastlines. Feeling unmoored from mainland life, embracing the leisurely, comfortable rhythms of a place so in tune with its natural surroundings. These are just some of the reasons to heed the siren call of the San Juan Islands.

Comprising 172 islands, this Pacific Northwest archipelago is scattered throughout northwestern Washington's Salish Sea. Named by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791, but the ancestral home of Indigenous Coast Salish groups like the Lummi and Samish since time untold, the idyllic islands are known for their evergreen forests, abundant wildlife, rich history, and thriving art scenes. The three main islands of San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez are hubs for outdoor fun like hiking, cycling, sea kayaking, and spotting native wildlife such as whales and 200-plus bird species.

State parks and the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge protect wildlife and the incredible variety of island ecosystems like grasslands and prairies (yes, prairies on an island). With bountiful farms (both the land and ocean variety), orchards, vineyards, and forests, the San Juan Islands are also affectionately referred to as the "gourmet archipelago," home to nationally lauded restaurants, wineries, distilleries, breweries, cideries, and local makers of artisan goods like fruit preserves and cheese.

Everyone from nature lovers to foodies and even a few billionaires and movie stars find their way to these remote islands. Sure, with no bridge connecting the islands to the mainland, they take a little more effort to reach. But that's just part of the charm and allure.

Here's how to plan the ultimate trip to Washington's San Juan Islands and fall in love with everything the destination has to offer.

How to Travel to the San Juan Islands

For getting to and navigating around the San Juan Islands, do as the locals do and ride the "marine highway" — Washington State Ferries system, which departs from the city of Anacortes , gateway to the San Juan Islands. With direct sailings to San Juan's Friday Harbor, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island, the ferries are not only an essential link connecting the islands to the mainland, but they also provide a scenic start to the trip.

Ferry tickets, which cover round-trip travel to and from the San Juan Islands, can be purchased online or at the terminal. While it's not necessary to buy tickets in advance, it's recommended that vehicle reservations are made ahead of time, especially in the busy summer months. For island hopping, there are daily sailings between San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw, with first-come, first-served non-reservation spots for vehicles. All eastbound inter-island travel is free, for both walk-on passengers and vehicles. If you're traveling westbound between islands (for example, from Orcas to San Juan's Friday Harbor), you'll pay a reduced fee for vehicles.

With airports on San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez islands, you can also take scheduled or charter flights with San Juan Airlines from Bellingham and Anacortes. Kenmore Air and Friday Harbor Seaplanes provide seaplane rides from the Seattle area for, quite literally, a splashy arrival or departure.

Once on the islands, you can get around by car or bike. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft aren't available here, but you'll find local taxi services on each island. For bigger islands like San Juan and Orcas, having your own car or renting one makes it easier to get around.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play on the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands consist of 172 named islands in varying sizes. Some are so small, they disappear at high tide. Others, like Shaw, are residential with little to no tourism infrastructure. And then there are those that are uninhabited for truly off-the-beaten-path exploring, while some, like Blakely and Decatur, are privately owned. Unless you can swing an invite to the exclusive private islands (Bill Gates has a home in the area), the main and biggest islands to explore are San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez.

San Juan Island

Home to lavender farms, historic lighthouses, art and science museums, and an array of shopping and dining experiences, San Juan Island is the second-largest and most populous island, making it a great jumping-off point for your vacation. The main town of Friday Harbor, where the ferry docks, has an easily walkable downtown area, friendly locals, and picturesque views. Travelers can browse galleries with work by Indigenous artists, shop at seasonal farmers markets, and get close to orca skeletons at the educational Whale Museum .

At roughly 20 miles long, the rest of the island is never more than a 20-minute drive away. The Scenic Byway route takes visitors around the entire island to other points of interest, including the American and English camps from the Pig War, the Pelindaba Lavender Farm, the Westcott Bay Sculpture Park, and scenic viewpoints like Lime Kiln Point State Park . Also known as Whale Watch Park, this peaceful spot on the island's western coast is a popular whale-watching destination along The Whale Trail . Even better, volunteers regularly hang out to answer questions. (What time do the whales come by, you ask? The answer is whenever they want.)

Whale Watching on San Juan Island

Here, locals live alongside bald eagles, foxes, and marine life like harbor seals and Dall's porpoises, making San Juan one of the best islands for wildlife sightings. But the hope of seeing whales, especially the orca and killer whale pods that roam the Salish Sea throughout the year, is the holy grail. The area is home to two different types of orcas: southern resident killer whales and transient or Bigg's killer whales. Humpback whales, gray whales, and minke whales have also been spotted here.

Whale-watching tours run out of Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor at the northern tip of the island throughout the year, with the best chances of sightings between March and October. Western Prince Whale Watching offers thrilling tours in speedy, open-air zodiac crafts with naturalists to answer questions. For larger boats with indoor viewing decks and more comfortable seating, San Juan Safaris ' whale tours are ideal for families and elderly travelers.

Where to Eat and Drink on San Juan Island

Just steps from the ferry landing, Downriggers is a prime spot for seafood-centric Pacific Northwest fare with waterfront views. Start off with at least one order of the Dungeness crab tots before diving into catch-of-the-day specialties and menu staples like sockeye salmon.

With a sunny outdoor patio and an industrial-chic dining room, San Juan Island Brewing Company is the go-to spot for island-made brews after a long day out on the water. Their award-winning selection includes everything from Czech-style pilsners to lesser-known Norwegian farmhouse ales infused with juniper. Try a preset or custom flight of five before ordering a pint along with hearty upscale pub grub such as salmon sandwiches.

Set back in a sylvan glade of flowering vines and stately trees, the bucolic atmosphere of Duck Soup 's rustic cabin dining room is the perfect complement to its sophisticated menu. Starting with seasonally inspired cocktails, the food changes throughout the year, utilizing what's fresh and available from the island's waters, farms, soil, and woods.

The San Juan Islands also have their own wine scene, part of western Washington's cool and wet Puget Sound American Viticultural Area . Producing cool climate white wines, San Juan Vineyard is the only winery on the island making vino from estate-grown grapes. These and their eastern Washington-sourced red and rosé wines can be sampled in flight or full-pour form at their countryside tasting room outside Friday Harbor. Specializing in low-intervention natural wines made from eastern Washington grapes and ciders crafted from local or regional apples, Madrone Cellars has a tasting room in Friday Harbor, where you can sample European-style pétillant naturel sparkling wines and hard ciders.

San Juan Island also has its own distillery , which produces small-batch gins, vodkas, liqueurs, and brandies. Some gins, like their Seaside Gin, use locally foraged botanicals like camas root — once a key food for the Coast Salish — and seagrass to evoke the flavors and scents of the island.

Where to Stay on San Juan Island

With a grand lodge, private cabins, yurts, glamping tents, and RV and camping sites, Lakedale is a lovely lakefront property less than 10 minutes from Friday Harbor. Peaceful and quiet, the cozy lodge rooms are ideal for couples, while the cabins are made for larger family gatherings. Guests can sip island-made wine on the terrace, fish for trout or bass in the lakes, or simply unwind by listening to birdsong and watching foxes wander past rooms.

If you prefer to stay right in Friday Harbor, the Tucker House Inn & Harrison House Suites offers a range of accommodations in historic 19th- and 20th-century accommodations close to the ferry landing. Choose between romantic guest rooms with balconies and gas fireplaces, spacious suites, and private cabins. Days start with a fresh gourmet breakfast, and pets get their own sweet welcome with "pupcakes" during check-in.

Orcas Island

Known as the Emerald Isle for its dense forests and lush greenery, the 57-square-mile, horse-shaped Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juans. Home to Mount Constitution, the highest peak in the archipelago, this hilly island offers ample hiking, biking, and other outdoorsy pursuits like kayaking on mountain lakes and camping within old-growth forests. Its many farms and orchards, producing heirloom varietals like Orcas pears, set the stage for fresh, seasonal dining experiences, as well as island-produced cheese, wine, cider, and spirits. Artisan studios and charming galleries can be found in tiny communities and villages throughout the island like Eastsound and Olga.

Encompassing more than 5,000 acres of lakes, forests, wetlands, bogs, and mountain peaks, Moran State Park provides hiking on its 30 miles of trails, camping, kayaking, swimming, and horseback riding. Visiting the summit of Mount Constitution, with its panoramic view of the islands and historic stone watchtower, is a must on any San Juan Islands itinerary — you can hike up or use a paved winding road. Turtleback Mountain Preserve and Obstruction Pass State Park are other great outdoorsy spots for picturesque views. With its mountainous terrain, Orcas Island is also a popular challenge for cyclists, with the winter months offering thrilling mountain biking on seasonal trails.

Where to Eat and Drink on Orcas Island

Start your day with small-batch pastries and bread from Brown Bear Baking in Eastsound. After a morning of outdoor fun, head to Buck Bay Shellfish Farm in Olga. Overlooking a tranquil bay where they grow their own Pacific oysters and clams, this is a great spot to shop for fresh, locally caught fish and Dungeness crab. Visitors can also enjoy a sun-drenched lunch with crab cakes, fish tacos, and crab mac and cheese.

In Deer Harbor, chow down on homemade brisket and ribs at neighborhood hangout Matthew's Smokehouse . Kingfish and Matia Kitchen are excellent choices for upscale locavore cuisine. Matia was recently a James Beard semifinalist for best new restaurant, so make those reservations now.

For wine, check out the modern farmhouse tasting room at Orcas Island Winery and try flights or pours of sparkling pétillant naturel, white, or red wines. In Eastsound, the Doe Bay Wine Company serves as the tasting room for The Orcas Project , a collaborative initiative between Pacific Northwest winemakers and local Orcas Island artists.

Orcas' first (and only) microbrewery, Island Hoppin' Brewery doles out an array of IPAs, ambers, blondes, and red ales, and Orcas Island Distillery turns island grains and apples into award-winning brandies and gins. Finally, before boarding the ferry to depart, soak up the view one last time with a hard cider made from island apples and other fruits at Boathouse Ciderworks .

Where to Stay on Orcas Island

Orcas offers visitors a good mix of camping and quaint, seaside getaways. Located inside Moran State Park, glamping outfit Leanto gives travelers the best of both worlds with their stylish, high-end glamping tents tucked away on private sections in the forest.

For a more traditional stay, head to the Doe Bay Resort & Retreat , situated on 38 acres of waterfront property with cabins, yurts, domes, and outdoor soaking tubs overlooking the bay.

Lopez Island

Encompassing nearly 30 square miles of farms, forests, and quiet bays, laid-back Lopez Island is known as the Friendly Isle. Here, you'll receive a warm welcome as locals greet guests with the signature Lopez wave. Don't be surprised if a simple request for directions morphs into a delightful and engaging half-hour conversation.

With its cyclist-aware drivers, quiet country roads, and mostly flat terrain, Lopez Island is best explored by bike. After getting off the ferry at the island's northern tip, hop onto a bike rental delivered by Village Cycles . You can head to wilderness preserves and nature areas like Shark Reef Sanctuary, Fisherman Bay Spit Preserve, and Iceberg Point to take in scenic views or tackle short hikes at Watmough Bay or the 400-acre Lopez Hill Preserve. The 30-mile Tour de Lopez route, created as part of an annual fundraising fun ride, takes visitors around the entire island. Kayaks are also available to rent and explore driftwood-strewn beaches, secretive bays, and isolated coastlines. The small town of Lopez Village is the main hub, with grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and a museum where you can learn about the history of this close-knit community.

Where to Eat and Drink on Lopez Island

Just as with the other islands, ocean- and farm-to-table (or as they call it here, seed-to-table) dining is huge on Lopez Island, thanks to the many family farms and bountiful sea. While dining options are more limited, the quality is just as good.

Arriving in Lopez Village, travelers can start off the day with locally roasted Dirt Drive Roasters coffee from Isabel's Espresso and craft bread and baked goods made from heritage Lopez Island grain at Barn Owl Bakery . Although their factory, which is open for tours and tastings, is now located in Anacortes, you can try Lopez Island Creamery 's famously delicious ice cream along with homemade fudge at Just Heavenly Fudge Factory . If you're planning on spending the day cycling, stock up on picnic essentials at Blossom Grocery , the first natural grocer in San Juan County. After a long day in the bike saddle, a pale ale at the Brewvado Tap Room in Lopez Village, home to Lopez Island Brewing Company , brings instant refreshment.

Lopez's premier dining destination is Ursa Minor . James Beard semifinalist Nick Coffey helms the fresh, seasonal dining experience in a warm, intimate space accented by wooden beams and minimalist decor, pairing natural wines with a small-plate, island-to-table menu sourced from the waters, farms, and forests of Lopez Island.

Lopez Island is also home to the archipelago's oldest vineyard and winery, Lopez Island Vineyards . Although their tasting room is currently closed due to COVID, you can pick up bottles of their estate-grown, cool-climate wines at the Lopez Island Farmers Market or in island stores.

Where to Stay on Lopez Island

If you want to extend your stay, cozy accommodations can be found at The Edenwild Boutique Hotel , or opt for a charming vacation rental like Lopez Farm Cottages .

When to Visit the San Juan Islands

With each season offering different benefits like harvests, festivals, and migratory wildlife, there's no bad time to visit the San Juan Islands. If seeing whales is your primary goal, March to October is the prime season to go, though the animals can be spotted year-round. With fair weather, pleasant temperatures, and the choice between spring flowers and fall foliage, spring and fall are great times to visit. The shoulder season months bring fewer crowds and bargain deals. Winter also brings its own advantages, like mild weather and practically no tourists. Sure, you may have some rain, but that's all part of the Pacific Northwest charm.

The gorgeous sunshine, lengthy days, and best chances for seeing orcas make the summer months from July to September the bustling high season. However, this is also when the islands get the most crowded and prices are at their highest.

Things to Know Before You Go

People flock to the San Juan Islands for its raw nature, wildlife encounters, leisurely way of life, and locally grown goods. But the archipelago is also part of a fragile ecosystem. Cut off from the mainland, precious resources are in limited supply and bad practices harm the wildlife and nature that make these islands such a joy to visit. Here are some things to keep in mind during your visit:

  • Freshwater is in short supply from May to October due to low rainfall, and locals and visitors are urged to conserve water through practices like taking short showers.
  • As a popular outdoorsy destination, the San Juan Islands follow the seven Leave No Trace principles to protect local ecosystems and wildlife. Whether staying in a hotel or camping, follow these tenets, which include staying on the trail and leaving things as they find them.
  • Islanders love sharing their home with visitors, but they also want it to stay clean and healthy. That's why visitors are encouraged to love it like a local and minimize their footprint. From bringing reusable water bottles to relying on bikes, public transit, and ferries to get around, there are plenty of ways to make your island visit more sustainable.
  • Embrace island time by slowing down, relaxing, and connecting with nature during your stay. Life moves a bit slower here, so you should, too.

The main islands – Orcas, San Juan, Lopez, and Shaw – are the most accessible and inhabited, each with its own unique charm and character. This region is not just a haven for nature enthusiasts but also a vibrant community with a strong sense of preservation and sustainability.

The San Juan Islands are a testament to the majesty of the Pacific Northwest, offering a unique blend of serene landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a tranquil escape from the bustle of city life.

How to Travel to the San Juan Islands

Traveling to the San Juan Islands offers a range of options, each with its own unique appeal. If you’re coming from outside the state, flying into Seattle-Tacoma or Bellingham airport in Washington, or Vancouver, B.C. in Canada, is a common starting point.

From there, you can drive or take a shuttle to Anacortes, WA, and then board a Washington State Ferry to the islands. Alternatively, you can opt for a small plane or seaplane from locations like Seattle, Everett, and Bellingham, or even travel by private boat.

The Washington State Ferry is a popular and scenic way to reach the islands. However, it’s essential to plan ahead, especially during peak seasons. Making reservations for the ferry is recommended.

It’s advisable to arrive about an hour before departure to ensure a smooth boarding process. For inter-island travel, the ferries operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and some have limited capacity for cars, so it’s wise to queue up early.

If you prefer a more direct route from Seattle, the San Juan Clipper, a passenger ferry, offers a picturesque four-hour journey through the Salish Sea to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, though it’s currently unavailable for 2024.

Once you’re on the islands, there are various ways to get around, including biking, using the transit or trolley, or even renting a moped. Exploring the San Juan Islands Scenic Byways by bike or car is a great way to enjoy the stunning landscapes.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play on the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Washington State, consists of 172 named islands and reefs, but three stand out due to their popularity and accessibility: San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island. Each island has its unique charm and offers a variety of experiences for visitors, making them the major islands in this stunning archipelago.

San Juan Island

San Juan Island

San Juan Island, with its 55.053 square miles (142.59 km²) of area, is the second-largest island in the San Juan Islands of northwestern Washington. Despite not being the largest, it stands out as the most visited and “settled” among its peers, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

The island’s charm is encapsulated in its lively Friday Harbor, a hub of activity with an array of shops and dining options. Adventure seekers can enjoy sea kayaking in the world-renowned waters around the island or embark on a whale-watching tour for a chance to witness these majestic creatures up close.

For those interested in history, the San Juan Islands National Historical Park, encompassing both American and English Camps, offers a glimpse into the island’s past, including the fascinating story of “The Pig War.” Lime Kiln Point State Park, also known as Whale Watch Park, is another must-visit for its breathtaking views and the Lime Kiln Lighthouse.

Beyond its natural and historical sites, San Juan Island boasts a vibrant arts scene, including the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park, where over 150 sculptures are set against a natural backdrop.

Whale Watching on San Juan Island

San Juan Island

Whale watching on San Juan Island is an unforgettable experience, offering some of the best opportunities in the world to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

The island, nestled in the heart of the Salish Sea, is a prime spot for encountering a variety of whales, including the iconic orcas. There are two ecotypes of orcas here – the Southern Resident pods and Bigg’s killer whales, along with humpbacks, minkes, and grays.

The peak season for whale watching runs from April through October, with orcas most commonly spotted during these months. For a more immersive experience, joining a professional whale and wildlife tour is highly recommended.

These tours, often boasting a high viewing rate, are accompanied by knowledgeable marine naturalists who provide valuable insights into the lives of these whales and other marine wildlife.

For those preferring land-based observation, Lime Kiln Point State Park, also known as Whale Watch Park, is one of the best places in the world for shore-based whale watching.

The park, facing the west side waters of the island, offers picnic tables and shady spots for a comfortable lookout. You can also explore the rocky shore and tide pools, visit the interpretive center, or take a lighthouse tour.

And before you set out for whale watching, consider visiting The Whale Museum in downtown Friday Harbor. The museum offers an educational prelude to your whale-watching adventure, with exhibits on various whale species, recent sightings, and the unique opportunity to listen to whale songs.

Remember, while whale sightings are never guaranteed, San Juan Island provides one of the best chances to witness these majestic animals in the wild.

This unique geography has earned it the nickname “The Friendly Isle.”

The island is known for its welcoming tradition where locals wave at passing motorists, bicyclists, or pedestrians, adding to its charm. When to Visit the San Juan Islands

he San Juan Islands, with their mild climate and stunning natural beauty, are a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the summer months, from June to August. This period offers the warmest weather, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and whale watching.

Additionally, summer brings various events and festivals, adding to the island’s vibrant atmosphere. However, for quieter visits and potential wildlife sightings, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and fall (September to October).

Things to Know Before You Go

The San Juan Islands beckon with their pristine nature, abundant wildlife, and laid-back lifestyle, but they’re also a delicate ecosystem.

Adhering to Leave No Trace principles is essential, respecting trails and wildlife habitats. Islanders welcome visitors but stress the importance of minimizing footprints, embracing sustainability through reusable items and eco-friendly transportation.

With limited freshwater and a focus on conservation, visitors should be mindful of their impact. From May to October, water conservation is crucial due to low rainfall, encouraging short showers and mindful usage.

Slow down, immerse in island time, and cherish the natural beauty responsibly.

Final Thoughts

A trip to the San Juan Islands is a magical experience, filled with stunning scenery, wildlife encounters, and a relaxed island vibe. From spotting orcas in the crystal-clear waters to hiking through lush forests, every moment is a treasure.

As the sun sets, painting the sky in vibrant colors, it’s a reminder of the beauty of nature. These memories and connections made on the islands stay with us long after the trip ends, reminding us of the tranquility and wonder found in this special corner of the world.

Riders San Juan Islands | Escape Adventures Bike Tours

Washington San Juan Islands Cycling Escape

F rom quiet pebble beaches to blossoming meadows, San Juan Islands cycling is a peaceful retreat from busy everyday life.

A scenic ferry ride from Washington’s Fidalgo Island brings us to the maritime world of the San Juan’s.  Here we cycle on serene island roads, navigating around harbors, inlets, bays, and rolling, green mountains.  We ride through color tulip nurseries and old sheep farms.  We visit artist colonies and taste fresh seafood cuisine.  In the Fall, we can pick our fill of wild berries from just about anywhere along the way.

A half-day’s ride takes us to the to of Mt. Constitution,  where we climb up an old stone fort’s princess tower for a bird’s-eye view of the entire San Juan Island chain,  the Pacific Ocean, Puget Sound, Olympic National Park, and Cascade mountain range.

The San Juan’s are also a natural haven for wildlife.  Great blue herons, black-tailed deer, cormorants, seals, sea otters, and King Fishers make their homes here.  We watch for dolphins and orca whales as we ferry through the island channels, where whale sightings occur regularly in season.

When you think of the Northwest, you are thinking of the San Juan’s!

Day 1 : We begin by picking you up in Seattle, land of contrasts, a sprawling metropolis dropped into a rainforest climate. Then an hour shuttle takes us where your scenic ride begins; La Conner. Located in the Skagit River delta, La Conner is small, charming fishing village that’s fertile with fields of vibrant flowers. La Conner is home to an annual Daffodil Festival ,and Skagit Valley has its own Tulip Festival, but you’ll also marvel at the fields of irises coloring the landscape (in fact, Skagit County produces more tulip, daffodil, and iris bulbs than any other U.S. county). You’ll heartily breathe in the Puget Sound fresh air as you ride past fragrant, colorful vistas of purple, red, yellow, and white. But don’t forget to glance at the skies for the numerous birding opportunities. There’s plenty of waterfowl amidst the wetlands and estuaries, as well as birds of prey and songbirds gliding through the dry forests of ponderosa pine. We return to La Conner for the night, but this has been an ideal warm-up for our coming exploration of the magical San Juan Islands.

Day 2 : From La Conner, we ride across the Swinomish Channel to Fidalgo Island through Swinomish Indian territory. Fidalgo Island boasts a drier climate than Seattle (it experiences about a foot less of rain every year than its large neighbor to the south). After an 11-mile journey north along the coast of Fidalgo Bay, you’ll arrive in the waterfront resort town of Anacortes, a warm tourist getaway that will give you your first clear views of the San Juan Islands. While Anacortes is thick with hiking trails and parks, our ultimate destination beckons about four miles west to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, where we’ll hop the ferry to fabled Orcas Island. Then it’s an 8-mile bike ride to Eastsound, the island’s main commercial center, where you’ll be treated to a special surprise. You’ll be shuttled to the Rosario Mansion to learn about its builder and local philanthropist Robert Moran. We’ll conclude our evening with a concert in the music room, where Moran’s original 1913 Aeolian Pipe Organ and 1900 Steinway Grand Piano are still housed. Then it’s time to enjoy a nice, restful sleep. The magic has just begun.

Day 3 : Prepare to discover the high points (literally) of the largest of the San Juan Islands. Orcas Island is not named after killers whales, but, rather comes from the Viceroy of Mexico who sent an expedition to the island in 1791. The horseshoe-shaped island is 57-square miles of sometimes rugged terrain with awe-inspiring sights, including panoramic views of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. You’ll travel to the east side of the horseshoe, heading south on Olga Road, then roam down the rocky coastline of the East Sound, dotted with madrona trees that loom over the choppy turf, their reddish bark providing a stunning contrast to the deep blue water in the distance. You’ll stop at popular Cascade Lake in Moran State Park for a siesta before embarking on the quest to Mount Constitution. The highest point in the San Juans, Mount Constitution has an elevation of 2,409 ft., with a road that sometimes steepens to a 15% grade (it has an average grade of 8.5%), so dig in for a hearty climb. The view from the summit is worth the trek. You’ll see vast horizons of both mountain ranges piercing the shimmering heavens, and the sparkling topography of islands arrayed in the swirling seas. From the base of the mountain, we move south a couple of miles to Olga, which is at the southern tip of the island on Buck Bay. This beautiful hamlet has a thriving arts community, so enjoy the communion of natural wonders and the creative handiwork of skilled artisans before embarking on the trip back to Eastsound.

Day 4 : Yesterday we explored the east side of Orca’s horseshoe—now it’s time for a little west side sightseeing. We begin with a short cruise to the shore of the President Channel, where you may want to stop into Orca’s Island Pottery on West Beach, a store abundant with eye-catching handmade crafts you won’t find in any mainland chain stores. We continue on our twisty, curvy ride around the north coast of the West Sound to Deer Harbor, which is plentiful with Dungeness crab, rock crab, and shrimp, so lunch may be in order. From there, we reverse our journey around the West Sound, then head south to the place where we started this island journey, Orcas, where we’ll catch the ferry to San Juan Island. The most populous of the San Juans, this postcard-worthy island is filled with majestic lighthouses over serene vistas, occasionally disturbed by a whale splashing through the calm surf. We’ll stay in Friday Harbor, a warm, welcoming seaport filled with charming shops and numerous places to sit and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the region. Take it all in and rest up for tomorrow’s exploration of San Juan.

Day 5 : We’re taking a tour of the entire San Juan Island, heading south from Friday Harbor through San Juan National Historical Park to the southern tip of the island, where we encounter a piece of forgotten history. This park is also known as the “American and English Camps” that we’re established during the Pig War of 1859, which was triggered by the killing of an actual pig followed by barely restrained hostilities lasting for 12 years. The American Camp is located at the southern tip of the island, the English at the Northwest side of San Juan. Both camp sites are listed as National Historic Landmarks and still have many of their original structures intact. We’ll make our way back up north, riding along the western shore around False Bay, up through fertile fields of prairie land. While San Juan Island is known for coastline sightings of whale pods and harbor seals, there’s plenty to see inland. This is a significant birding destination, where you may spot a great blue heron, peregrine falcons, and even bald eagles. We’ll make our way back to the coast, and after riding about 5.5 miles from False Bay, we’ll arrive at Lime Kiln State Park. This small seaside park is one of the best land sites in the world for whale watching. In fact, it’s the only state park in the country devoted to watching orca whales. From Lime Kiln State Park, we’ll head north for another curvy 10 miles past the English Camp to Roche Harbor, which is an official U.S. port of entry. We’ll return south down hilly roads to Friday Harbor. Take a walk or visit the Whale Museum, then enjoy another splendid sunset. You’ve earned it.

Day 6 : This morning we ferry to Lopez Island, where we enter from the very top of the island and move down well-traveled Ferry Road. Lopez Island is the flattest of the three largest San Juans, with rich, spacious farmland and thick forests. We’ll ride toward the eastern coast along Swifts Bay past the wooded hills of Spencer Spit State Park. Then we’ll head down to the south end of the island for lunch on a secluded beach. From here you’ll see the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the south and Victoria Island to the west, along with a view of the majestic Olympic Mountains. Then it’s up north, where we’ll travel along the west coast of the island toward Shark Reef Sanctuary, a terrific spot to watch seals and sea lions off the rocky coast. Then we make our way up to the ferry at the north of the island for our trip back to Anacortes. Take a breather and prepare for shuttle back to Seattle. You’ve enjoyed a hidden jewel of America’s vast natural treasures!

From the moment you learn of our trips, to the time you return home and start planning your next trip, we are here to bring you the best possible experience. Our Commitment to the Environment

Our environmental commitment is second to none. We run our tours the same way we run our company, with an eye on the triple bottom line: People, Profit & Planet. At Escape Adventures, we elected to pursue a more comprehensive approach to actually reduce our carbon footprint, rather than just offset it. We overhauled our entire operation — from our vehicles, to our buildings, to our procedures — to become an outdoor industry leader in the charge to help our people and our planet.

Exceptional Service and Exceptional Guides

Leading tours naturally followed from our passion of exploring our favorite places with our friends. Our support staff includes our reservation team who is there to answer your questions about the tours, our service team who prepares your bike and gear for the tour, and our guide team – the ones who take you into the great outdoors. The highest level of responsibility, good nature, integrity, and dedication are standard traits of all those who work at Escape Adventures. We our proud of it and we think you should know it.

The Best Support Vehicles

Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. As you thumb through our catalog, you will also notice our vehicles are big, tough, and different. These are not stock vehicles. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, camping gear and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

The Best Bicycles and Gear

Make your trip as comfortable as possible on the body, as simple as possible for traveling, and hassle-free on tour. By choosing to rent a bike from us, we will fit you with the newest, highest quality gear in the industry. Escape Adventures provides only high-end bicycles from Specialized. We replace our rental fleet each season to ensure all our rentals meet our high standards. All of our bikes are equipped carbon fiber frames and disc brakes designed for a smooth, comfortable ride. For those who are touring with a companion who may not be as fit or need a little help up the hills, we now have ebikes (electric pedal assist) available on select tours.

The Best Food

Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.

Food represents a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. Our guides prepare all of your meals on our camping trips. Expect three delicious meals a day consisting entirely of freshly prepared foods. These include fresh organic fruits and vegetables, as well as meats. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you’re enjoying a ride. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat! An increasing number of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we not only accommodate but also pleasantly surprise. Should you possess special diet requirements and/or limitations, just let us know at sign-up. We’ll work with you to meet those critical needs.

A visit to the San Juan Islands: Three islands with varying offerings, all with great views

While there are 172 islands in San Juan County, the ferry only visits a select few. (Kate Miner/For The Spokesman-Review)

If you’ve ever traveled to the United Kingdom, the coast of northern Maine or eastern Canada, you can expect a similar feel when visiting the San Juan Islands. What’s different is that the temperatures here are moderated by the waters that encircle them, resulting in a generally mild maritime climate.

Nearby mountain ranges create a rain shadow effect, resulting in less rainfall compared to the usual patterns observed in Western Washington, and from the observation tower at the top of Mount Constitution on Orcas Island, you’ll see panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains, the Olympic Mountains and many Canadian and American cities. Inlets and bays are dotted with circling gulls, bobbing boats, rocky shores, soaring eagles, and picturesque seaside homes and villages.

Getting there

To get to the San Juan Islands you’ll either need to take the Washington state Ferry, a small plane/seaplane from Seattle, Everett or Bellingham, or a private boat. When taking the ferry from Anacortes, you will need to decide which island you’ll be visiting and plan accordingly. The ferries require a reservation, and not all of them visit every island.

Once on an island, you will probably want to stay and explore, but if you choose to travel between islands, there are limited island-to-island ferries. One suggestion is to find a base camp and travel by boat or foot.

Which island?

There are 172 islands and reefs in San Juan County, but the ferry only serves San Juan Island, Orcas Island and Lopez Island. Shaw Island is accessible by ferry but has limited camping and visitor amenities.

Each island has unique experiences and accommodations. Lopez Island is more pastoral and is known for biking, quaint B&Bs and day visits. Orcas Island (the largest) is known for secluded forest cabins, water-view resorts and outdoor adventure. Mount Constitution on Orcas Island is the highest point in the San Juan Islands (2,400-foot elevation) and the second-highest mountain on an ocean island in the U.S. San Juan Island is home to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor and is known for activities like camping, kayaking and boating.

Island events

There are several island events, farm tours, art events and glorious farmer’s markets throughout the summer and fall. Some of the more notable are the Orcas Island Cider and Mead Festival in May, the San Juan County Fair in August and the annual “Savor the San Juans,” a fall celebration of food, farms and films across all the islands.

San Juan Island

Friday Harbor calls itself the Gateway to San Juan Island. An idyllic village where the ferry lands is home to a large marina, shops, restaurants and inns. This is also the area where you can catch a boat for whale watching or tours, or head out on kayak or bicycle.

Recommendations for lodging in Friday Harbor are the Friday Harbor House overlooking the ferry dock, which has well-appointed rooms (each with a Jacuzzi and fireplace), and an excellent in-house restaurant overlooking the water. The grassy area sloping down toward the water is dotted with cozy fire bowls and lounging chairs with blankets, ideal for watching boats and stargazing. The Earthbox Inn & Spa is another retro-chic hotel in Friday Harbor, with a spa and indoor pool.

Heading north out of Friday Harbor, you’ll travel along Roche Harbor Road, with your first stop at the San Juan Vineyard for wine tasting, live music and island views. Continuing along this road you’ll come to what many say is one of the best restaurants on the island: Duck Soup , a not-to-be-missed dining experience showcasing local produce, meat and seafood, foraged edibles and goods made from island craftspeople. Also along this road are great family-oriented camping options. Lakedale provides an 82-acre, full camp experience. With everything from family camping and RV sites to fully equipped cabins and luxury yurts, and 40 acres of lakes to float your boat.

At the top of the island is Roche Harbor Resort . The only other area on the island where you’ll find waterside shops, dining and lodging, and home to Hotel de Haro built in 1886. Full of history, this area was built by John S. McMillin, a Tacoma lawyer who discovered the richest and largest deposit of lime in the Northwest. By 1886, the Tacoma and Roche Harbor Lime Company was a booming business, and the original Hotel was built as a Hudson Bay Post, surrounded by lush gardens overlooking 12 miles of coastline. Accommodations range from luxurious modern homes to historic hotels and quaint cottages.

Close to Roche Harbor is the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park , built on what was once an orchard. This 20-acre nonprofit park is run by a board of directors and numerous volunteers and funded almost entirely by donations. It has about 150 separate art pieces by Northwest artists and involves a meandering walk-about with whimsical and thought-provoking sculptures.

As you travel down the west side, take time to explore English Camp and learn more about the area’s history. Further down West Valley Road, you’ll find Snug Harbor Resort on peaceful Mitchell Bay, offering year-round waterfront accommodations with cabins and suites with full kitchens. This area is also home to Saturn’s Return , a 42-acre all-inclusive farm with a small inn and the island’s only native population of trout, trails through forest and meadow, seasonal workshops and farm-to-table chef-prepared meals. Sweet Earth Farm is more established and rustic, with glamping tents.

Before heading back to Friday Harbor, be sure to make a stop at Lime Kiln Point State Park, a 36-acre day-use park equipped for boat/kayak-in campers. Walk to the lighthouse, explore the remnants of old lime kilns and watch wildlife. This area is considered one of the best places in the world to view wild orcas from the land and boasts breathtaking views of sea and sky.

Orcas Island

The horseshoe-shaped Orcas Island is often called, “the gem of the San Juans.” Named by a Spanish explorer for his sponsor, Viceroy Juan Vicente Guemes de Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, it’s only a coincidence the orca whales live here year-round.

It’s an intriguing mix of arts and lush forests, pristine lakes and home to Mount Constitution. This island is more rural, with curving roads that wind through forests, past artists’ studios and local farms. Since this island is hilly, it’s not as frequented by cyclists but can be a hiker’s dream. The 5,252-acre Moran State Park has several lakes and more than 38 miles of hiking trails. The old-growth trails around and up to Mount Constitution are impeccably groomed and offer expansive marine vistas. You can also drive or bike to the observation tower at the top of Mount Constitution.

The ferry brings you into a small area without much going on, but you will find the Orcas Hotel and Café here, which is an iconic landmark and was established in 1904. Next, make your way toward the top of the Eastsound, known as Eastsound Village, located at the upper curve of the horseshoe. This is where you’ll find the largest village with lodging, shops and restaurants. From there, you’ll either head over to the west side of the island, where you’ll find Moran State Park and Doe Bay, or to the east side, where you’ll find the Turtleback Mountain Preserve and Deer Harbor.

Eastsound Village has no shortage of well-curated shops, all within walking distance of the Outlook Inn . This newly renovated inn has a variety of lodging options including luxurious waterfront suites, and its restaurant, New Leaf Cafe, known for scrumptious fare, provides one of the best breakfasts in town. Tucked behind the Inn is Sara’s Garden, a peaceful retreat with gardens and ponds, and a quaint wooden chapel that exudes charm and poetic intimacy.

On the eastern side, Moran State Park has everything you need to stay busy outdoors – miles of woodland and lakeside hiking trails, and numerous campgrounds with swimming and boating. South of the park is the little hamlet of Olga, famous for its artists’ co-op, with an extensive collection of pottery, painting and jewelry, and Doe Bay Resort & Retreat , where you can dine with a water view at Doe Bay Café and enjoy cozy lodging, massage, yoga, sea kayaking, soaking tubs and more.

On the western side, Turtleback Mountain Preserve, saved from private development and now open to the public, has an 8-mile trail network that offers amazing views of the San Juan archipelago. Deer Harbor is where you’ll find one of the few sandy beaches in the Islands and a village with a small but quality selection of lodging, such as Pebble Cove Farm , an organic farm on the water. From the marina, you can schedule guided kayak and whale-watching tours, and the seaplane base is located here.

Lopez Island

If you’re seeking a quieter pace, Lopez Island is perfect. It’s simpler . It’s optimal to walk along the beach, go hiking, bird watching or kayaking, and provides the easiest cycling of the three islands. If you’re staying on one of the other islands, consider bringing your bike over for the day on the ferry and just pedal about. (The interisland ferry from Orcas Island or San Juan Island is free for walk-on passengers and cyclists.) It has parks for picnics, farms for frolicking and a bit of history to explore. Locals know it as “the Friendly Isle,” where everyone waves and smiles, and nobody is in a hurry.

When you come off the ferry, you’ll head out along Ferry Road and past Odlin County Park, then onto Fisherman Bay Road to Lopez Village. With quaint cafes, farm-to-table restaurants, a bookstore, galleries, a historical museum, a library and shops.

Lopez is home to artists, craftspeople, entrepreneurs, musicians, farmers, fishermen and nature lovers. Everyone is connected, and it’s a great place to just hang out and meet the locals, make connections, have a beer, listen to local music or spend hours bird-watching at Agate Beach and Iceberg Point.

For lodging, consider the Edenwild Hotel in Lopez Village with water views, where the major amenities are, “peace and quiet.” And for those bird watchers and agate hunters, look no further than the Mackay Harbor Inn . A B&B with a long sandy beach and homemade breakfast.

Washington’s Island Getaway: How to Do the San Juan Islands

W hen thinking about a trip to the Pacific Northwest, islands aren’t the first thing that come to mind. Forests, mountains and lots of rain are more stereotypical. So while visitors might not be as familiar with the San Juan Islands, located just off the coast of Seattle , locals flock to this beloved archipelago every summer to take advantage of the rare sunny days in the region. Accessible only by ferry, private boat, or small local airlines if you prefer a scenic (but expensive) sea flight, anyone who’s spent part of their summer here will vouch that this remote haven is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Honestly, it’s a little bit of a hassle to get there, but completely worth the experience once you arrive. Technically, there are close to 200 islands in the archipelago , but visitors frequent four main islands: San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island and, sparingly, Shaw Island. San Juan and Orcas are the largest by far, and receive the most visitors, particularly during the summer months. But if it’s your first time heading out to the San Juans, you’ll need some pointers, so here’s a complete rundown of exactly how to get there, which ones to spend the most time at and what to do once you get there.

But First, Overnight in Seattle

No matter what your plans, getting to Seattle for a day or two first is a good idea. For one thing, the Anacortes Ferry Terminal is a two- to three-hour drive from the city. For another, most of the ferries leave early in the day and require arrival at least a half hour before departure. After a long flight, or even a short one, getting directly into a rental car and driving to the ferry makes for a pretty long travel day. Even if you’re trying to squeeze in a weekend trip, pad in an extra day (or two) to spend in the city as a buffer with the rest of your travel, preferably at one of these hotels. Sprinting toward a ferry as it departs is not a good feeling, as I may or may not have learned from firsthand experience.

The Edgewater

The Edgewater’s claim to fame is that it’s Seattle’s “only over-water hotel” — it’s literally built over Puget Sound and affords the kind of stunning waterfront views people will always pay top dollar for. The other rather wonderful claim to fame at this property is its connection to The Beatles — yes, the actual Fab Four stayed here during their first world tour in 1964. They rather infamously “fished” out their hotel room window, and allegedly even caught something. If you had any doubts about how close it is to the water, let that anecdote put them to rest. Grab dinner at their waterfront restaurant, Six Seven , and hang out in the cozy, cabin-like bar for a nightcap, or just have that drink on your own waterfront balcony.

Thompson Seattle

If you’re only here for a night or two, why waste time? Thompson Seattle is right in the thick of things. You can walk to Pike Place Market and the world’s oldest Starbucks, and stand in line to get…your regular coffee order, then stroll over to the Gum Wall to get a very gross but necessary selfie. Wander through Pike Place and either pick up some local snacks from the vendors or head off into one of the cafes for a bite to eat. If you can brave the lines, Pike Place Chowder will not disappoint. If you don’t end up eating at the market, the hotel’s own rooftop bar, The Nest , offers stunning views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, and the ground floor restaurant, Conversation , focuses on fresh, local seafood and farm-to-table sourcing.

You Are Here: Seattle

Getting to the san juan islands by ferry.

Leave plenty of time to get to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. If traffic is clear, it should only take two hours from Seattle, but with traffic it can be up to three. Once you get to the terminal, lines are likely, so plan to be there at least an hour before your allotted departure time. If you arrive at the check-in less than 30 minutes before departure, they will not let you board. No exceptions, so plan wisely! All four of the main islands are accessible by ferry from the terminal, and there’s also an airport shuttle to the terminal if you opt not to drive or stay over in Seattle.

The islands themselves are fairly remote, so securing a car is highly recommended, especially for first-time visitors. By and large, most people get to the islands by ferry, and that’s partially because the islands are not walkable. Even the most populous one, Orcas, is made up of different enclaves that are all about a half hour away from each other. There are taxis and Ubers sparingly available, but for adventuring, exploring and general peace of mind, it’s best to have a vehicle.

If you’re in a car, you will need to make a ferry reservation before arriving at the terminal via the Washington State Ferries website . Reservations for the summer through September, the high season, initially open up two months before the start of the season in late April. This is the best time to make a reservation, as more are released two months before every sailing date, and also two days before, but there are far fewer slots. If you can’t get a reservation, it is possible to travel standby, but space is never guaranteed this way. Reservations are free to make, and can be canceled without charge up to 24 hours before. Reservations should be made for both the westbound trip (toward the islands) and eastbound back to Anacortes.

Once you arrive at the ferry terminal, trade your reservation for a ticket, which is about $50 for a car and driver, plus $15 per passenger, so a round-trip ticket for two people is around $65. Since this is much cheaper than a flight, and the ferry ride itself is around an hour, which is about as long as the flight, the ferries reign supreme. And despite a little inevitable hassle and confusion, once you’re onboard, there’s food and drink, alcohol and plenty of views, like the occasional whales (orcas), dolphins, sea lions and more.

Pro tip: If you do cross the ferry without a car, there are rental cars available on the island right at the ferry terminal. Then again, current demand indicates these will be expensive and are likely to book up.

Getting to the San Juan Islands by airplane

San Juan Airlines and Kenmore Air are the two carriers who regularly fly to the San Juan Islands. San Juan Airlines operate land planes and one-way tickets start at $114, but their terminal is located in Bellingham, so it’s still about an hour and a half drive from Seattle, and travelers are required to pay for parking for more than 36 hours. Kenmore Air operates both land and seaplanes, and departs from several small airports throughout Seattle, which means travelers can skip the drive. Both airlines have frequent flights to Eastsound on Orcas Island and Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, and they also offer private charters aside from scheduled flights. Rates fluctuate quite a bit based on season and booking time frame, so it’s best to connect with the airlines directly.

Visiting Orcas Island

By far the most popular and bucolic of all four islands, Orcas is the perfect place for a first-timer or newbie to begin exploring. At 57 square miles, there are multiple settled areas throughout the island, but Eastsound is the central village closest to the ferry, and the Outlook Inn is hands down the best hotel in the area. A historic property built in 1876 by Charles W. Shattuck (a homesteader who’s affectionately referred to as “the founder of Eastsound”), the building changed hands many times before settling into its contemporary iteration in the 1970s when the current owners acquired it. Columbia Hospitality , who rep a number of boutique properties in the region, took over management and operations in 2022.

Sleek white and grey interiors make the Outlook Inn’s Water’s Edge and Bay View suites the most desirable rooms on the island, as do their proximity to the water. Water’s Edge suites are, as the name suggests, right on the shoreline and separated from the main building, and Bay View suites have private balconies and unobstructed waterfront views. The inn’s own New Leaf Cafe also has waterfront views and a hyper-seasonal menu highlighting Pacific Northwest farmers and purveyors. The hotel is just a block or two from the center of town, where freshly made pastries at Brown Bear Baking and oceanfront snacks at The White Horse Pub were highlights for casual dining. On the higher-end side of things, local tasting menus at Houlme or Matia Kitchen are available Thursday to Sunday.

Outside of Eastsound, other parts of Orcas worth exploring include a drive out to Buck Bay Shellfish Farm , for caught-this-morning seafood of all kinds: oysters, shrimp, crab, halibut, salmon, clams and whatever else came in with the tide. Around another side of the island, Doe Bay Resort boasts clothing-optional hot springs and sauna , and down at Deer Harbor, sign up for a day of learning to sail with Captain Ward at Northwest Classic Daysailing . Ward has been sailing around the islands for the past two decades, and his classic 1948 wooden sloop Aura is available for booking May through October. When you’re out with him, the captain will let passengers actively sail the boat, so get ready to be put to work. He’s also incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area.

Another recommended water activity is guided sea kayaking with Shearwater Kayak Tours , and while you’re on land, a relatively easy hike up Mt. Constitution affords views of the islands for miles. Down in Rosario, yet another Orcas community, touring the historic Moran Mansion (now a museum) is another must. Self-guided tours are available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the high season. Once you’ve seen all there is to see on Orcas, it’s time to take a couple day trips to the other islands.

Visiting San Juan Island

Roche Harbor and Friday Harbor are the two central hubs on San Juan Island, although the ferry only lands at Friday Harbor. The commercial hub for the San Juan area, Friday Harbor isn’t quite as beautiful or remote as some of the other areas, but it does boast an incredibly scenic lavender farm. Visiting the Pelindaba Lavender Farm is free, and given its location right on the water, photos from this particular site are usually very epic. For the foodie side of things, make your way over to the other side of San Juan and visit Westcott Bay Shellfish Company in Roche Harbor. Their Tide Tables picnic area is literally at the water’s edge, and you can watch fishermen catch and shuck (and grill) the oysters that make their way to your table. Barbecued with various compound butters, these oysters are so good they’ve even been known to convert avowed oyster haters.

Visiting Lopez Island

Lopez is great for a day trip, but there isn’t enough to do here to warrant an overnight stay. Much smaller than either Orcas or San Juan, one thing Lopez Island is known for is its food. In fact, ice cream from the Lopez Island Creamery is so popular that it’s exported to the other islands — you can find it all over the San Juan area. But since you’re there, why not go to the source? Pints, ice cream sandwiches and ice cream pies are all on offer, and they make most of their products with solar power, just another reason to support.

Other things to check out on “Slopez,” the most laidback island of the bunch, include the ramen, gyoza and udon at Setsunai Noodle Bar , local, plant-forward dishes at Ursa Minor , and don’t forget to grab a loaf of bread at Barn Owl Bakery , where they use wheat grown and milled on Lopez with machinery from the 1800s.

Visiting Shaw Island

Known as “ the holy island ,” most visitors drawn here are intrigued by the nuns who inhabit the isle , which is just 7.7 square miles. As the smallest of the four main islands, Shaw has a population of fewer than 200 people year-round. As such, there are no hotels or rentals available, but there is one grocery store, Shaw General Store , and one park and campground area .

If you’re kayaking or hiking around the island, Shaw could be a good place to crash for the night, otherwise it’s good for an afternoon trip, and particularly good for boaters, who like the peace and quiet. Indian Cove is the perfect place to moor if you’re boating, as it’s also next to the 60-acre Shaw Island County Park, where pristine beaches and abundant tide pools make for an idyllic afternoon.

Amazing guides and perfect rides! Wonderfully pampered and physically challenged, I feel like I picked the perfect company and location!

Travel+Leisure Magazine calls the San Juan Islands “a place out of time.” Bike pastoral roads and beside sparkling waters. Hike through an ancient forest. Spend a half-day kayaking coastal waters with naturalist guides. Experience the very best of life on the Salish Sea. Top it off with award-winning lodging and fresh island cuisine. Conde Nast Traveler named  Friday Harbor (where you’ll spend a good bit of time) one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. And Fodor’s Travel Guide trumpets, “You won’t find a nicer place to ride than these islands in the Pacific Northwest’s Puget Sound.” At the end of your tour, we get you back to your hotel without needing additional shuttles or having to battle Friday afternoon traffic. Just hop aboard our chartered float plane (included with your trip) for a spectacular flight over the islands straight back to Seattle!

Explore Fidalgo Island, then hop aboard a ferry to sail away to Lopez Island.

Meet us in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle north to Anacortes, on  Fidalgo Island . Ride along the shores of Padilla Bay. Contemplate nature’s horizons against the skyline of industry as flocks of birds from the wildlife refuge circle a neighboring oil refinery. Our first ferry of the day takes us to Lopez Island. Ride to Spencer Spit State Park, Fisherman Bay and Lopez Village, the heart of Lopez. Spend two nights in pampered luxury at the historic Edenwild Boutique Inn . Their fresh, gourmet breakfasts and convenient location make it a top choice for an island getaway!

You can read more about the Washington Ferry System here: http://www.wsdot.com/ferries/

+2,171 ft / -2,174 ft (or less, or more)

Explore Lopez Island today with no ferries to catch! Lopez is the least hilly, most rural, and least populated of the three main San Juan Islands. It’s also considered the ‘bicyclist’s island’ for its quiet roads, gentle terrain, spectacular marine vistas, and friendly residents who wave as you bicycle past. Ride counter-clockwise around the island. Listen to the sound of the waves gently stirring the rocks on the shore at Agate Beach before continuing on to Watmough Bay (watch for seals!). This is a great day for views of the Olympic Mountains and looking ahead to some of the places you will explore this week.

Ferry to Orcas Island then hike or bike to the summit of Mt. Constitution, highest point in the islands.

Mt. Constitution ride – 11.1 mi · +/- 2,001 ft

Take a short Washington State Ferry cruise to Orcas Island, the largest and most mountainous of the San Juans. Shuttle (or pedal) to Cascade Lake at Moran State Park. Hike through the last remaining old-growth forest in the islands up to the summit of Mt. Constitution, the literal high-point of the San Juans! Prefer to ride? Challenge the switchbacks on the road to the top of “Mt. C” instead of hiking the trail. It’s one for the books! Either way, your reward at the top is a marvelous view of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges with the emerald archipelago flung out wide below. Ferry to San Juan Island where the Earthbox Inn will be our home for the next three nights. Enjoy dinner on your own in Friday Harbor.

Kayak to Turn Island with San Juan Kayak Expeditions.

Kayak the calm waters of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea today. Our sister company, San Juan Kayak Expeditions , will provide two-person ‘yaks, guides and instruction. Spend today watching and learning about the abundant bird and marine life along the rocky, tree-lined shore of San Juan Island. Stop at charming and diminutive Turn Island for a picnic lunch and the opportunity for a nice 1-mile walk around the circumference of the island. After kayaking, stroll about Friday Harbor, go for  a pedal, visit the Whale Museum, or take in the Art Gallery before we gather for a fabulous dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the islands!

Bike to Roche Harbor, American Camp, Cattle Point and historic Lime Kiln State Park for whale-watching.

43 miles  (or less)

+2999 ft / -3001 ft (or less)

Bicycle the serene shores of San Juan Island today, enjoying open farmland and marine vistas from quiet country roads. Visit historic Roche Harbor and stop by English Camp – a national historic park that was once part of the “Pig War” between England and the United States. Have lunch at Lime Kiln State Park, one of the best orca (‘killer’) whale-watching spots in the country. Tour heavenly scented lavender fields en route to the American Camp Visitor Center and the Cattle Point lighthouse on your way back to town. Savor views of the Olympic Mountains across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier – 125 miles! Dinner tonight will be at the acclaimed Coho Restaurant .

Pedal around Pear Point before enjoying a scenic, traffic-free, float plane ride back to Seattle!

– Breakfast

Pear Point: 6 miles (up to 10 mi)

+339 ft / -368 ft

After breakfast in Friday Harbor, pedal a casual loop around Pear Point, just outside of town. In the afternoon, bypass the infamous Seattle gridlock – on a Friday afternoon, no less! – and return to the “big city” in style via a chartered float plane. Marvel at birds-eye views of Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains, and Olympics as you soar over and past the traffic. Have a waterfront lunch on your own on the shores of Lake Union in downtown Seattle before meeting the van to take to your flight or your hotel.

Your Family-Friendly Guide to Roche Harbor Resort

(Image: Kate Neidigh)

Welcome to our family travel series dedicated to Pacific Northwest adventures! Join us as we explore top destinations, featuring must-see attractions, delightful dining spots, and activities tailored to the whole family. Writer Kate Neidigh launched this series in 2018 as a new mom, determined to get out and explore with her little one. Fast forward to 2024, and she's now a seasoned mom of two, excited to share her travel experiences and insights learned along the way. So, pack your bags, gather the fam, and let's discover the wonders of the PNW and beyond.

Welcome to Roche Harbor Resort!

Roche Harbor Resort is a historic seaside gem located on San Juan Island. Thirteen years ago, my husband and I exchanged vows here, creating memories that have stayed with us ever since. Now, it's a full-circle moment as we bring our kids back to this special place to create new memories together. With its rich history, lush gardens, and a myriad of family-friendly activities, Roche Harbor is the ultimate destination for a memorable family vacation. Easily accessible by car, boat, or plane, this enchanting property is a must visit with the fam. If you’re coming from Seattle, don’t forget to check the ferry schedule out of Anacortes, you’ll want to book this in advance.

Family-Friendly Accommodations

Roche Harbor offers a wide variety of accommodations to suit every family’s needs. Choose from luxurious modern homes, the historic hotel, charming historic cottages, and newly debuted waterfront cottages, perfect for families seeking comfort and convenience. Each lodging option is designed to provide a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, ensuring a restful stay after a day of adventure.

Exciting Activities for the Whole Family

Whale Watching and Kayaking Adventures

Roche Harbor is home to thrilling outdoor activities that will captivate both kids and adults. Embark on a whale-watching excursion with San Juan Safaris, a sister company to San Juan Outfitters. Witness majestic orcas and other marine life in their natural habitat. For a more hands-on experience, join a kayaking tour and explore the serene waters around San Juan Island, guided by knowledgeable experts. These excursions offer a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the local marine ecosystem.

Enjoy the Only Heated Pool on San Juan Island

The outdoor pool at Roche Harbor is the only heated pool on San Juan Island! It features a splash pool for the little ones and plenty of lounge chairs for relaxing in the hot summer sun. The pool’s gorgeous location provides a bit of peace and quiet while still allowing you to watch all the activity going on in the harbor. It's the perfect spot for a refreshing swim or a lazy afternoon with the family.

Waterfront Playground

Located right next to the pool is an epic waterfront playground. We spent so much time here!

Tennis Courts for Fun and Exercise

Looking to get in a few rounds for exercise or just a little friendly competition? Roche Harbor has you covered with full-size tennis courts that are regularly maintained and ready for action. Whether you're a seasoned player or a beginner, the courts are available for your enjoyment.

Bocce Ball Courts for All Ages

The resort features two 65-foot, side-by-side courts that were custom-built with crushed oyster shells, providing an authentic experience like few places outside of Italy. Both courts are open all day for complimentary use by guests, with regulation balls and a life-size scoring marker on the scene. Whether you’re a true gamer or new to the sport, you're sure to have some good stories to tell after a few rounds.

Delicious Dining Experiences

Roche Harbor boasts three distinct waterfront restaurants, each offering a unique dining experience. Executive Chef Bill Shaw, who has been leading the resort's culinary pursuits since 1992, collaborates with local farmers and purveyors to bring the best of the islands, the Salish Sea, and Washington state to your table. From San Juan Island shellfish to Washington beef and hand-crafted grill sandwiches, you’ll taste the passion and joy Chef Shaw has for Northwest cuisine.

Famous for its freshly made doughnuts, Lime Kiln Café serves a delightful array of classic American breakfast and lunch options. This casual, counter-style café is perfect for families looking for a relaxed dining experience at any time of day.

For a more upscale yet inviting dining experience, visit the Madrona Bar and Grill. Located on the water in the heart of historic Roche Harbor Village, this bistro features floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular views of the marina, formal gardens, and breathtaking sunsets. Enjoy the warm ambiance with wood floors, a historic fireplace, and Roche Harbor artwork adorning the walls. The Madrona Bar offers a full-service experience with local and regional spirits, wine, tapped beer, and a tempting list of signature cocktails.

Explore the Island

While Roche Harbor Resort offers a wealth of activities and amenities for families, the surrounding San Juan Island is brimming with additional attractions that are perfect for creating unforgettable memories. Here are some must-visit spots near the resort that the whole family will love.

Charming Village Strolls

Take a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Friday Harbor, just a short drive from Roche Harbor. The village is full of quaint shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed afternoon exploring the local culture and history. My kids loved The Toy Box right in town.

Scenic Hiking Trails and Nature Walks

San Juan Island is a haven for nature lovers, offering numerous scenic hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. Whether you're looking for a gentle walk or a more challenging hike, the island’s diverse landscapes provide breathtaking views and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Local Farms and Artisan Markets

Visiting local farms is a wonderful way to experience the island’s agricultural heritage and enjoy fresh, locally-grown produce. Many farms offer tours where families can learn about sustainable farming practices, interact with animals, and even pick their own fruits and vegetables. Artisan markets are also scattered throughout the island, showcasing handmade crafts, delicious food, and unique souvenirs.

Must-See Spots

  • San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. Located at the entrance to Roche Harbor, this 19-acre outdoor sculpture park is home to more than 120 unique sculptures by Northwest artists. Managed by the San Juan Islands Museum of Art, the park features gently rolling fields with grass paths that create natural corridors between the sculptures. It's a delightful place for families to wander and appreciate the creativity of local artists in a serene outdoor setting.
  • Lime Kiln Point State Park. Situated on the scenic west side of San Juan Island, Lime Kiln Point State Park is a 36-acre haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Known for its iconic lighthouse and some of the best wildlife viewing areas around, this park is one of the top spots to see orca whales from land. The nearby forests of bull kelp support a vast ecosystem, including salmon, eagles, seals, and otters. With abundant parking, restrooms, and a seasonal interpretive center, Lime Kiln Point State Park is an ideal location for families to experience the natural beauty of the San Juan Islands.
  • Cattle Point Lighthouse. At the southern tip of San Juan Island lies the Cattle Point Lighthouse, an iconic structure with a rich history. Named after the cattle brought to the area by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1853, the lighthouse offers expansive views that stretch from Vancouver Island across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, and the Cascade Range. The area is frequented by deer, eagles, and marine mammals such as seals and sea lions. It's a perfect spot for sightseeing and capturing the stunning landscapes of the Northwest.

Until Next Time!

Roche Harbor Resort is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that promises fun, relaxation, and unforgettable moments for the entire family. Whether you’re seeking adventure on the water, culinary delights, or peaceful moments in a beautiful setting, Roche Harbor has it all. Plan your visit today and discover why families return to this historic resort year after year.

New, Cheap Flights Are Coming to Fly to the Island of Barbados

Ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has quietly been developing into a full-fledged Caribbean airline.

The airline just opened a new crew base at San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, and has been adding a host of new intra-Caribbean flights across the region.

It started with flights to the Dominican Republic and Cancun, and now Frontier has added new flights to St Croix, St Maarten and, most recently, another Dominican Republic destination: Santiago de los Caballeros.

But an even more significant route starts early next month: Barbados, in a landmark new service for the southeastern Caribbean island.

Beginning July 3, Frontier will be operating thrice-weekly non-stop flights between San Juan and Barbados.

That’s a big lift for the island, opening up Barbados to Frontier’s wide-ranging network of connections to source cities across the mainland United States.

So what will it cost?

That just might be the most notable news: fares start at just $69.
