A first-timer's guide to the San Juan Islands, Washington

If you're in search of a peaceful retreat from the hectic pace of modern life, start planning your trip to the San Juan Islands now. This small, scattered archipelago is a bucolic mélange of sustainable farms and attractive B&Bs, where the pace hasn't changed much since the 1950s.

Peace, calm and communing with nature are the main reasons people come here. In laid-back but quietly industrious rural communities, motorists offer salutatory waves, and you can leave your bike unlocked outside the grocery store and still expect it to be there when you get back.

Don't arrive in search of shopping malls or a frenetic nightlife; come instead for kayaking, whale watching, beachcombing, sailing, clamming and skillfully concocted farm-to-table cuisine paired with local wines. Get ready to feel a world away while still vacationing in continental America.

When is the best time to go to the San Juan Islands?

Cocooned in the Puget Sound between northwest Washington and Canada's Vancouver Island, the San Juans have a relatively mild climate year-round. The best time to visit for dry, sunny and warm weather is between May and September. This is when most businesses are open and conditions are perfect for bracing outdoor activities like kayaking and cycling. However, it's also when the islands are most crowded.

To avoid the crush but still enjoy fine weather, come in September after Labor Day weekend.

The rainiest seasons are fall and winter, although heavy snow and subzero temperatures are rare. Accommodation rates are cheaper in the off-season, save for a short spike at Christmas and New Year.

Is it easy to get to and around the San Juan Islands?

In terms of getting to the islands, you have two options: air or boat. The ferry is by far the most popular method, and the journey from the port of Anacortes – a 90-minute drive north of Seattle – is beautiful. There are more than 170 islands in the archipelago, and regular car ferries serve the largest four: Lopez, Shaw, Orcas and San Juan Island.

The three main islands – Lopez, San Juan, and Orcas – are small enough to cycle around, and each has a bike rental outlet. San Juan Island and Orcas run seasonal shuttle buses between May and September, linking the ferry terminals with the main sights. For convenience, many people bring their own cars.

There are regular flights in small aircraft and seaplanes between the San Juan Islands and Seattle, Anacortes and Bellingham. The nearest big international airport is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac).

How to pick the best San Juan island for you

San juan island: best for history.

Welcome to the site of one of America's most improbable and little-known diplomatic spats.

The San Juan Islands' 15 minutes of fame came in 1859 during the so-called Pig War, a border dispute between the British and the Americans that almost triggered an all-out conflict. The incident, in which the only casualty was a foraging pig shot by an overzealous American farmer, led to the building of two military redoubts on San Juan Island to guard the then-ambiguous border between the US and Canada .

Today, British Camp and American Camp still stand on opposite sides of the island, incorporated into an atmospheric national historical park  as a testament to a war that – fortunately – never happened. Old barracks, interpretative panels and park rangers help explain the fascinating history.

San Juan Island is also known for its wineries, cideries and artisan farms raising everything from lavender to alpacas.

Lopez Island: best for cycling

With its flat terrain, traffic-calmed country roads and friendly motorists, Lopez is an idyllic place to head out on two wheels. Leave the car at home (or at least park it at the ferry terminal in Anacortes) and pretend you're in the Netherlands .

Covering 30 sq miles and supporting a population of less than 3000, Lopez's landscapes are punctuated with sunburnt fields, handsome wooden barns, curvaceous beaches and rustling tracts of forest. With no highways or traffic lights to worry about, it's a cyclist's dream. Indeed, it's rare to see a car traveling more than 45mph.

Lopez Bicycle Works in "the village" rents a full gamut of two-wheeled machines between May and September. This is also the best place to organize fishing charters and kayaking trips. The island is renowned for its pebbly sand beaches, where playful seals linger.

Two people kayaking in Deer Harbor, Orcas Island, Washington

Orcas Island: best for kayaking

The most rugged of the three "big" San Juans, Orcas' jagged coastline, with its bluffs, bays and scattered islets, is rich pickings for kayakers. Stick close to the shore, and you'll be paddling through clear, sheltered waters kissed by mossy tracts of temperate rainforest. Look out for seals, eagles and perhaps an orca or two on the horizon.

If kayaking away from the coast is a worry, join an organized trip. Shearwater Adventures on Orcas is considered one of the best kayaking schools in the state and offers tours and lessons.

Orcas has a large state park with a recreational lake, several campgrounds and 38 miles of trails. Nearby is the archipelago's most illustrious hotel, the vintage 1906  Rosario Resort & Spa , complete with its own museum.

How much money do I need for the San Juan Islands?

Despite its reputation as a haven for rich yachters, the islands' varied facilities can cater to most budgets.

Although you won't find any Walmarts or cheap shopping malls, you will encounter reasonably priced bakeries and delis with enough ingredients to put together a rustic picnic.

For travelers on a budget, there's a hostel in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and camping possibilities on all four of the ferry-accessible islands. Several of the smaller paddle-in islands have primitive camping, too (reachable by private boat or kayak). All campgrounds have tent sites, while some larger places have full-utility sites for RVs.

While the more affluent crowd gets around by private boat, the hoi polloi utilizes Washington State Ferries – fares are refreshingly cheap, especially if you don't bring a car.

How many days do I need in the San Juan Islands?

A minimum of three days is recommended, longer if you want to spend quality time on all three of the main islands.

Are there any towns on the islands?

The only real town in the archipelago is San Juan Island's Friday Harbor, with a population of around 2000. Eastsound on Orcas and Lopez Village on Lopez are civic and commercial hubs that resemble small villages, equipped with shops, restaurants and accommodations.

Do bears live on the San Juan Islands?

There is no permanent bear population. Very occasionally, a lone black bear will swim over from Vancouver Island or the US mainland. They are usually caught and relocated.

Is Shaw Island worth a visit?

Shaw is the smallest of the four islands served by the public ferries. Accommodation-wise, it has an 11-berth campground ; food-wise, there's just one general store. With a couple of beaches and a small network of quiet roads, it makes for a pleasant afternoon spin on a bicycle. Otherwise, stick to the larger islands.

Which is the biggest island?

Orcas, but only by a smidgeon – it measures 57 sq miles compared to San Juan Island's 55 sq miles. In terms of population, San Juan Island has more people, nearly 9000 to Orcas' 6000.

Which is the best island for hiking?

Orcas Island, courtesy of the 5000-acre Moran State Park, has an abundance of trails crisscrossing the archipelago's most rugged terrain, including 2407ft Mt Constitution.

What local dishes should I taste?

Shellfish is the archipelago's signature food, particularly locally caught razor clams, crab, oysters and scallops. Backing them up are two Pacific Northwest staples, halibut and salmon, both fished since pre-Columbian times. If seafood isn't your thing, don't worry – the islanders rear their own cows, pigs and sheep, with Lopez Island lamb heading the bill in local restaurants.

An orca jumping out of the waters of Puget Sound

What are the best water activities?

Whale watching is hugely popular, and sightings of orca pods are almost guaranteed during the summer (May to October). There's even a good chance of spotting orca from the shoreline at San Juan Island's Lime Kiln Point State Park . Alternatively, whale-watching boat trips can be organized from Orcas and San Juan Island. Humpback, minke and gray whales also frequent local waters.

All three islands offer kayak rentals and tours. More experienced kayakers can progress along the Cascadia Marine Trail (CMT), a 160-mile sailing and paddling route of which the San Juans are an integral part. Many of the archipelago's more remote islands sport rustic CMT campsites equipped with landing areas, picnic tables and compost toilets, marked by official CMT signs.

Are there any non-athletic things to do?

San Juan Island has a whale museum , an art gallery, a museum and a winery with a tasting room . Orcas, Shaw and Lopez all have small historical museums, and The Rosario Resort on Orcas has a lovely spa .

My favorite thing to do in the San Juan Islands

The San Juans is the place I go for some "active relaxation," a place to switch off from world news and social media in favor of walking and running around quiet backroads and tree-rimmed coasts.

If I could bottle one experience, it would probably be the short, sharp 10-mile bike ride from the village of Eastsound to the top of Mt Constitution on Orcas Island. Taking in farmland, forest, shoreline, lakeside and mountainside on the way to the San Juans' highest point, I finish by climbing the observation tower on the summit, where island-speckled views stretch for miles over teal waters. If I had bionic vision, I would even be able to see my house – in Canada.

"book a trip with this group, seriously. my friend and i did a 4 day camping/biking/kayaking trip in late june and it was fantastic. krista, our guide was exceptional. she was knowledgeable, friendly and an excellent cook. by the end of the trip, it really felt like she was an old friend and we miss her smile and ukulele playing the company likes to keep the groups small which was so nice because it allowed us the freedom to make some changes in the itinerary without feeling like we were inconveniencing everyone else. we visited san juan island, orcas and lopez and they were all a little different and all wonderful. the company does its best to serve all organic and locally sourced food which was tasty and healthly, and the camp grounds we stayed at were very nice. i can not say enough positive things about this trip and the experience." nancy s, july 2017.

Have a question?

Experience quiet valley roads past historic farms and beautiful shorelines as you bike, kayak, and explore San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez Islands.

Biking on the San Juan Islands, the world seems both expansive and small at the same time. In the San Juans, to-do lists and busy schedules recede and are replaced by placid water, distant peaks, and the rhythm of simple fishing villages along the Washington shore. As your focus shifts, it is inexorably drawn to the vastness of the Pacific sprawling to the west, the magnificence of the North Cascades on the horizon and the broad open skies above. These idyllic and relaxing islands, with their temperate maritime climate, lush vegetation, stunning views, and perhaps even some Orcas as you move from island to island, offer an absolutely amazing location for your next active-travel cycling vacation.

The ferry ride is part of the adventure!

It is a transfer ride like no other. See the beautiful shorelines of the islands within The Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Salish Sea's main outlet to the Pacific Ocean.

What Guests are Saying

Cyclist on an ebike on a country road

The service, guides, hotels, and the scenery were all beyond any expectation. The rides were through spectacular forests with a pine tree smell that I'll only smell at Christmas. It sounds cliche, but it was literally a trip of a lifetime... It was all seamless and relaxing. Thank you again for a wonderful trip!!

Truly a trip of a lifetime! No complaints, only memories I will cherish for years to come.

The rides were challenging but incredibly well supported. I felt like a pro rider with the level of attention and accommodation. The guides were encouraging, knowledgeable and very patient. Food and accommodations were excellent and the trip experience making friends with the other guests makes this the best vacation I have ever taken.

My wife and I usually do trips on our own, but now realized that guided tours are the way to go! All the mistakes that you can make on your own were eliminated, and our guides had found some great attractions that we surely would have missed on our own.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA). From the airport, you can take the Bellair Airporter to Anacortes (we suggest making reservations by phone at 866-235-5247. See www.airporter.com for schedules). A one-way ticket costs $43 per person or $82 for a round trip.

Please note that the shuttle runs only four times each day, and it takes about two and a half hours to get to Anacortes (in Burlington, you will switch shuttles). In Anacortes, the shuttle can drop you off at the Shell Station in downtown Anacortes at 1312 Commercial Avenue. From here, it is a half mile to the Majestic Inn & Spa, where you will meet your guides on the first day of your trip. We recommend calling a taxi upon your arrival in Anacortes to take you and your luggage to the hotel of your choice.

If you choose to drive to Anacortes and need to leave a vehicle somewhere for the duration of the trip, we recommend parking it in the upper lot of the Anacortes Ferry Terminal Lot. The cost for the week is approximately $55. You must pay at one of the six electronic pay boxes with credit card before leaving the vehicle— parking spaces cannot be reserved in advance. After dropping off the car on the first day of the trip you should take a taxi to meet the group at the normal meeting location. On the last day of the trip, your guides can drop you and your luggage off at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal Lot to retrieve your vehicle.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Majestic Inn & Spa (419 Commercial Avenue, Anacortes, Washington) at 8:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Please come dressed in your cycling clothes with your riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. Also in a separate bag from your main luggage, have a set of street clothes and shoes so you can easily change into them for the post-ride ferry crossing. Your guides will acquaint you with your bike and ensure you a comfortable fit before setting out on today’s ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, the Lakedale Resort (360-378-2350), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. Taxis are available to the Washington State Ferry Terminal in Anacortes to meet the group. You will need to be at the ferry terminal no later than 11:30 AM in order to meet your guides and board the ferry. If you are unable to make it to the ferry terminal by 11:30 AM check the current ferry schedule ( www.wsdot.com/ferries/schedule , look for the summer sailing schedule) for departures to Lopez Island. You may call your guides or the Edenwild Inn to arrange transportation from the ferry landing.

Additional Departure Information

After a short ferry from San Juan Island, you will say farewell to your guides at 12:15 PM** at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. From here, we recommend reserving a ticket with the Bellair Airporter for transportation to the Sea-Tac Airport (we suggest making reservations by phone at 866-235-5247. See www.airporter.com for schedules). The cost is $43 per person, one-way (or $82 for a round-trip ticket from the airport). Your guides can help you find the Airporter pickup location at the ferry. The Airporter shuttle has a 1:05 PM departure time on our last day that arrives at Sea-Tac Airport at 3:45 PM - we recommend booking this shuttle unless you plan on spending more time in Anacortes. Please allow adequate connection time for any ongoing travel to accommodate possible traffic delays. **Please note that these times may shift by approximately 30 minutes either way depending on the ferry and Airporter schedules.

Ferry ride from Orcas Island to Anacortes

Rider Information

Rider Level: 2

Terrain: Hilly

The terrain is full of rolling hills, including some long, gradual grades and some short steep ones. The riding near Anacortes and on Lopez Island is the most gentle, and Orcas Island has the hilliest terrain. Many of the roads on the islands have a "chip seal" surface, which is a type of pavement treatment that is more rough than typical asphalt. This type of surface makes the riding slower and a bit more difficult for the distance when compared to asphalt roads you may be used to. San Juan Islands is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. For those eager to experience every mile but mindful of their physical limits, our electric bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution. Type 3+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.

Daily Average

21 miles | 33 kilometers

124 miles | 199 kilometers

1,332 feet | 405 meters

7,994 feet | 2,436 meters

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Schedule a massage or spa visit
  • Visit the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor or one of the other art & history museums located on the islands
  • Enjoy sight seeing and the varied terrain of the San Juan Islands on a horseback ride
  • Scenic hiking all over the islands
  • Witness firsthand the amazing ocean ecosystem while sea kayaking
  • Schedule a sunset wildlife cruise

Guide Gratuities

Guide gratuities are customary and at your own discretion, to recognize service, hospitality, and the little extras that surprise and delight. For this trip, we suggest a tip for your guides between $240-$300 per guest and, of course, you may choose to give more if your guides made your trip an unforgettable experience. While local currency is preferred, there are other options to make tipping easier. Most guides accept gratuity via PayPal or Venmo or our staff can help before or after the trip. Gratuities will be divided among the guide team, so feel free to leave your gratuity with whomever you choose at the end of your trip.

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Ferries: The Washington State Ferries are our transport to and from the islands. Schedules can be delayed or in very rare instances, cancelled due to technical issues. In the event of a delay or cancellation, please be aware that unexpected changes to your program may take place.
  • Packing: Layers! Layering is the best way to regulate your body temperature. This tried-and-true strategy is all about slipping layers on and off as your activity level or the weather changes.

Before and After Your Trip

Anacortes, Washington

Anacortes is the working heart of the San Juan Islands and is well-known as the home of the Washington State Ferry Terminal, serving the San Juan Islands as well as Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. It is located on Fidalgo Island and enjoys a milder, drier climate than other locations in the Pacific Northwest due to the rain shadow effect of the Olympic Mountains to the west. Take some time to visit nearby Mount Erie, Washington Park, or Deception Pass State Park. (If you are in downtown Seattle and need to get to Anacortes to meet the group for the trip start, you can still use the Bellair Airporter. Airporter shuttles depart from the Washington State Convention Center in downtown. Call 866-235-5247 or visit www.airporter.com to make arrangements.) We recommend the following accomodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Where to Stay

The Majestic Inn and Spa

Emanating historical elegance, this small hotel has been recently remodeled with careful attention to detail and is centrally located in the heart of Anacortes. Dine at the 5th Street Bistro or relax at The Apothecary Spa during your stay. Please note : This is also the meeting location on the first day of your Trek Travel vacation. www.majesticinnandspa.com

Anacortes Ship Harbor Inn

This unique and quaint property, located about three miles from downtown Anacortes, features 30 rooms which are spread out over six acres. The rooms vary widely in size and amenities, and many feature full kitchens, fireplaces, and extra living space. All rooms have views of the Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait and continental breakfast is included in the room rate. www.shipharborinn.com

The Wild Iris Inn

If you have several days around your Trek Travel vacation to spend in the area, you might consider relaxing in the small village of La Conner, about 15 miles from Anacortes. This bed & breakfast offers comfortable rooms and a delicious breakfast each morning. Take some time to explore this historical waterfront town with boutique shops, art galleries, sunset and dinner boat cruises, and locally sourced cuisine. www.wildiris.com

Seattle, Washington

Nicknamed the Emerald City, Seattle has a lot to offer and, if your travel plans allow, can be explored after your trip. City highlights include Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Flight and the Seattle Aquarium. Or, venture out to one of the three National Parks located within a one to three hour drive from Seattle—Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, and Olympic National Park. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

backroads travel san juan islands

Kimpton Hotel Monaco

Traveler’s know what they want and that is why Hotel Monaco has consistently been a winner of the Conde Nast Traveler’s annual “Reader’s Choice Awards.” Additionally, this property is located near the center of all that Seattle has to offer—within walking distance of Pike Place Market, the Space needle and Seattle’s best new restaurants, music scene and boutiques. After a day of exploring this gorgeous city Hotel Monaco has guestrooms designed to heighten your senses with wine hour nightly, a yoga mat in each room, hotel bicycles to use during your stay and a host of other amenities. www.monaco-seattle.com

Hotel Ändra

One of Seattle’s finest boutique hotels, this property is located in the heart of downtown, offering easy access to the waterfront, Pike Place Market and countless shops and cafes. Renowned chef Tom Douglas’ Greek-inspired restaurant Lola is right next door (and available through room service) and the Northern Italian-inspired Assaggio Ristorante is Hotel Ändra’s other tempting neighbor. When not out dining or exploring, enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and impeccable Scandinavian decor inside this top-rated hotel. www.hotelandra.com

Cedarbrook Lodge

If your travel plans require a night spent close to the Seattle-Tacoma Airport either before or after your trip, the Cedarbrook Lodge is the place to stay. This lodge offers the service you’d expect at a boutique hotel, relaxing grounds, an impressive sustainability program, an on-site restaurant specializing in farm-to-table cuisine and a complimentary airport shuttle that’s available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. www.cedarbrooklodge.com

Average monthly temperature and precipitation

Packing and Weather

Daytime temperatures range from the upper 60s to low 80s (20-28ºC). Evenings cool to averages of low to mid 50s (10-13ºC), and as the west coast can be rainy we recommend you come prepared with wet weather gear (although we'll cross our fingers that you won't need it!). We also suggest bringing a warm jacket and long pants to wear on the naturalist-led sunset boat cruise on Day 4. View our Packing List

San Juan Islands Bike Tour

Cycle the san juan islands with us, and experience six days of idyllic island adventure.

The San Juan Islands may not be tropical, but with beaches, mountains, orca pods, forests, and one of the country’s largest lavender farms, the San Juan Islands are an outdoor enthusiast’s dream!

On this six day cycling adventure, you’ll pedal on three of San Juan’s most alluring islands: San Juan Island, Lopez Island and Orcas Island.

The adventure begins on San Juan Island, the “gateway” to the San Juans. Browse charming shops and galleries, wander the beaches, taste delicious and fresh gourmet food, or visit one of the many local farms and markets on this tranquil island.

Lopez Island is up next on our Puget Sound cycling adventure! The most rural of the islands, Lopez Island is a mix of rolling farmlands and beaches. Locals call this island “the Friendly Isle”, and you are sure to discover why!

This cycling adventure ends with Orcas Island, the largest of the islands we visit. Replete with verdant mountains and shimmering lakes, Orcas is called the “Emerald Isle” and the “gem of the San Juans”.

Hop on “island time” with us, and experience the idyllic charm of the Puget Sound.

Outlook Inn

Day 1:    Ferry over to San Juan Island, and enjoy lunch in Friday Harbor before starting your ride. We’ll pedal around Cattle Point, at the southern tip of the Island, and even hop off the saddles to do a little exploration on foot. Our ride will end at our lodging for the evening, and we will enjoy this first evening dining together on San Juan Island.

Day 2:   Pedal from our lodging to Lime Kiln State Park. Also referred to as “whale watching park”, you will have the opportunity to explore some of this area on your own and try to catch a glimpse of an orca or minke whale. We have a lighthouse tour scheduled this morning, and afterwards we will ride to Roche Harbor. We will be staying on San Juan Island again this evening, but tomorrow we move to Lopez Island.

Day 3: New day, new island! After our morning cycling adventure, we will enjoy a picnic-style lunch and climb aboard our whale watching vessel. Make sure you have plenty of space on your smart phones, and maybe even pack a pair of binoculars! (Our three hour tour is sure to fill up at least one sd-card). After our whale watching expedition, we will be dropped off on our next island – Lopez Island!

Day 4:  From our lodging, we will pedal our way south to Iceberg Point. This is one of the main attractions on Lopez Island! After a short hike, you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular views of the Olympic Peninsula. You will not be disappointed! After an afternoon of biking and hiking, we will say goodbye to Lopez Island and ferry over to Orcas Island.

Day 5:   Today we will spend the whole day exploring Orcas Island. The largest of the San Juans, Orcas Island is a green paradise that the locals call “the gem of the San Juans”.  We will explore the island from our saddles, then do a little more exploration on foot this evening too. Mount Constitution is the tallest mountain in the San Juans, and this afternoon we get to experience it’s 2,398 feet. We will even give those who are up for it the opportunity to ride up and over it!

Day 6:   Enjoy one last delicious and fresh, handmade breakfast in this island paradise before packing-up this morning. Wind down from all the adventures, and really take-in the sights and sounds around you. You are still on “island-time” today. We will do a little more exploration by bike around Orcas, before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

“Once again, the folks at Wilderness Voyageurs did a great job with the San Juan Islands Tour … Over the years, I have done a number of trips with WV and it is great to know that I can join a trip as a singleton traveler and by the end of the tour I will have a number of new friends from around the country. Our guides were terrific … Keep up the good work and I’ll continue doing three trips a year with Wilderness Voyageurs. ”

Day One - San Juan Island Southern Loops

You will be met by your guide in the vibrant port town of Friday Harbor. Your guide will serve you lunch, give you your trip briefing, and then ride with you for a few miles – just to help you get oriented. Your riding today is focused on the southern part of San Juan Island.

The Intermediate ride heads to American Camp at the southernmost tip of San Juan Island. (American Camp was home to the US Army during the joint occupation of the islands by the Americans and the British in 1859.) Your route then continues around the marine sanctuary at False Bay to Pelindaba Lavender Farm – in full purple bloom during the summer months. You then circle back to Friday Harbor.

Leisure riders follow the Intermediate ride above but skip the southernmost tip of the island to loop around False Bay before heading directly back to Friday Harbor.

Challenge riders follow the Intermediate ride and add on a loop out to Lime Kiln State Park – the nation’s only whale watching park with its iconic lighthouse and old lime kilns.

OVERNIGHT TOWN

Friday Harbor is a quaint, well- preserved town with several art galleries, bookshops, and boutiques dotted along its historic streets. There is a whale museum and whale-watching tours. There are also several great places to eat. As you would expect, seafood is a major feature on many menus.

Day Two - San Juan Island Northern Loops

Today you do a loop ride in the northern part of the island.

The Intermediate ride follows rolling back roads to Roche Harbor. This sheltered cove has been a haven for sailors for over 150 years. There are several waterfront restaurants – ideal for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine.

After lunch, you go on to explore British Camp (the site used by the British troops during the joint military occupation of the Island in 1859). From here it’s a meandering loop back to Friday Harbor along the west coast. In places, you’re less than 3 miles from the Canadian border, and the snowcapped mountains of Vancouver Island frame the western horizon. Sites en route include an outdoor sculpture park, an alpaca farm, and Lime Kiln State Park – the nation’s only whale watching park. Wildlife is a common sight – orcas in the ocean, deer on the land and bald eagles in the air.

Leisure riders follow the Intermediate route to Roche Harbor and English camp before heading straight back to Friday Harbor across the center of the island.

Day Three - Friday Harbor to Eastsound (Orcas Island)

Today you head across the water to Orcas Island. Here, dense forests, placid lakes and multiple inlets create a rugged, unspoiled beauty. The day starts with a ferry ride from Friday Harbor to Orcas.

From the ferry terminal, Intermediate riders follow the curving shoreline past a series of small inlets to Deer Harbor. The little sandy beach and dock make this a great place for a picnic lunch. Crow Valley Road then takes you across the heart of the Island past Turtleback Mountain Preserve and a succession of small farms. A short detour takes you to Orcas Island Pottery – a world-renowned institution perched on a 100-foot-high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From here, it’s just a short ride to Eastsound.

Leisure riders start out on the Intermediate route but head straight for Crow Road and Orcas Island Pottery – skipping the out-and-back to Deer Harbor.

Friday Harbor to Eastsound (Orcas Island) Washington cycling tour segment

Leisure 15 miles with 1,000 feet of climbing

Intermediate 25 miles with 1,500 feet

Eastsound is a charming seaside town and artist community. The laid- back atmosphere here can make even Friday Harbor seem hectic by comparison. That said, the clutch of galleries and stores are enough to while away a pleasant couple of hours. Eastsound also has the best ice cream on the archipelago.

Day Four - Orcas Island Loops or Out on the Water

Be as active or as relaxed as you choose. The cycling routes are focused on the eastern side of the Island. The non-cycling options get you out on the water.

The Intermediate route heads south past the placid waters of Cascade Lake and through the densely-forested Moran State Park. After a side-trip to Obstruction Pass you head to the idyllic beach at Doe Bay for lunch.

Leisure riders follow the Intermediate route but skip the detour to Obstruction Pass.

Challenge riders follow the Intermediate route but add in a steep out-and-back to the top of Mount Constitution. At 2,400 feet, this is the highest point on the San Juan Islands.

For those wanting to get out on the water, we can arrange guided full- or half-day sea kayaking tours. Another option is to join a whale-watching cruise to see orca, gray, and humpback whales. See Services & Options at the end of this itinerary for more details. There are also kayaks and stand up paddle boards to rent on Cascade Lake.

Day Five - Lopez Island Excursion

Today, you head over to Lopez Island – the “Friendly Isle.” This 15-mile island is one of the most peaceful and relaxed islands in the San Juan chain.

Once on Lopez Island, Intermediate riders cycle past driftwood-scattered beaches to Spencer Spit with stunning views of the snow-capped Cascade Mountains. After cycling past small farms that produce fruits and vegetables, you get to Shark Reef Sanctuary where seals bask in the sunshine. From here you head back up to Lopez Village.

Leisure riders follow the Intermediate route but head straight to Lopez Village from Spencer Spit – skipping the loop to Sharks Reef.

Challenge riders follow all of the Intermediate route but also add in an extra loop to MacKaye Harbor on the southern tip of the island. For all routes, the best place for lunch is Lopez Village; beautifully situated at the north end of Fisherman Bay. At the end of the day, you take the ferry back to Friday Harbor

Day Six - Shaw Island Excursion - Last Day

Shaw Island is today’s destination. Shaw is the smallest of the islands serviced by the regular ferries. On Shaw Island you will find sandy beaches, quiet roads and a historic general store – but not much else. And that’s just how the population of 240 likes it.

One of the few places to visit – other than the beaches and parks – is the Benedictine monastery. The resident nuns farm the land here and welcome visitors. Indeed, nuns operated the store and ferry terminal here until 2004. The island is small and the riding is leisurely.

Today is also a good day to enjoy sea kayaking or whale-watching or you can simply relax in Friday Harbor – shopping, browsing the galleries or visiting the Whale Museum.

Your guide will meet you at the end of your tour and transfer you and your luggage to your chosen means of transport for leaving the islands.

Visit an island with sandy beaches, a monastery, and a population of just 240

BIKE CHOICES

Hybrid bike.

Hybrids bikes, a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike

Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.

Road bikes, a racing style bike with drop handlebars

Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)

eBikes, designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills

Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.

Your Own Bike, if you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there

If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.

Washington’s Island Getaway: How to Do the San Juan Islands

W hen thinking about a trip to the Pacific Northwest, islands aren’t the first thing that come to mind. Forests, mountains and lots of rain are more stereotypical. So while visitors might not be as familiar with the San Juan Islands, located just off the coast of Seattle , locals flock to this beloved archipelago every summer to take advantage of the rare sunny days in the region. Accessible only by ferry, private boat, or small local airlines if you prefer a scenic (but expensive) sea flight, anyone who’s spent part of their summer here will vouch that this remote haven is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Honestly, it’s a little bit of a hassle to get there, but completely worth the experience once you arrive. Technically, there are close to 200 islands in the archipelago , but visitors frequent four main islands: San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island and, sparingly, Shaw Island. San Juan and Orcas are the largest by far, and receive the most visitors, particularly during the summer months. But if it’s your first time heading out to the San Juans, you’ll need some pointers, so here’s a complete rundown of exactly how to get there, which ones to spend the most time at and what to do once you get there.

But First, Overnight in Seattle

No matter what your plans, getting to Seattle for a day or two first is a good idea. For one thing, the Anacortes Ferry Terminal is a two- to three-hour drive from the city. For another, most of the ferries leave early in the day and require arrival at least a half hour before departure. After a long flight, or even a short one, getting directly into a rental car and driving to the ferry makes for a pretty long travel day. Even if you’re trying to squeeze in a weekend trip, pad in an extra day (or two) to spend in the city as a buffer with the rest of your travel, preferably at one of these hotels. Sprinting toward a ferry as it departs is not a good feeling, as I may or may not have learned from firsthand experience.

The Edgewater

The Edgewater’s claim to fame is that it’s Seattle’s “only over-water hotel” — it’s literally built over Puget Sound and affords the kind of stunning waterfront views people will always pay top dollar for. The other rather wonderful claim to fame at this property is its connection to The Beatles — yes, the actual Fab Four stayed here during their first world tour in 1964. They rather infamously “fished” out their hotel room window, and allegedly even caught something. If you had any doubts about how close it is to the water, let that anecdote put them to rest. Grab dinner at their waterfront restaurant, Six Seven , and hang out in the cozy, cabin-like bar for a nightcap, or just have that drink on your own waterfront balcony.

Thompson Seattle

If you’re only here for a night or two, why waste time? Thompson Seattle is right in the thick of things. You can walk to Pike Place Market and the world’s oldest Starbucks, and stand in line to get…your regular coffee order, then stroll over to the Gum Wall to get a very gross but necessary selfie. Wander through Pike Place and either pick up some local snacks from the vendors or head off into one of the cafes for a bite to eat. If you can brave the lines, Pike Place Chowder will not disappoint. If you don’t end up eating at the market, the hotel’s own rooftop bar, The Nest , offers stunning views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, and the ground floor restaurant, Conversation , focuses on fresh, local seafood and farm-to-table sourcing.

You Are Here: Seattle

Getting to the san juan islands by ferry.

Leave plenty of time to get to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. If traffic is clear, it should only take two hours from Seattle, but with traffic it can be up to three. Once you get to the terminal, lines are likely, so plan to be there at least an hour before your allotted departure time. If you arrive at the check-in less than 30 minutes before departure, they will not let you board. No exceptions, so plan wisely! All four of the main islands are accessible by ferry from the terminal, and there’s also an airport shuttle to the terminal if you opt not to drive or stay over in Seattle.

The islands themselves are fairly remote, so securing a car is highly recommended, especially for first-time visitors. By and large, most people get to the islands by ferry, and that’s partially because the islands are not walkable. Even the most populous one, Orcas, is made up of different enclaves that are all about a half hour away from each other. There are taxis and Ubers sparingly available, but for adventuring, exploring and general peace of mind, it’s best to have a vehicle.

If you’re in a car, you will need to make a ferry reservation before arriving at the terminal via the Washington State Ferries website . Reservations for the summer through September, the high season, initially open up two months before the start of the season in late April. This is the best time to make a reservation, as more are released two months before every sailing date, and also two days before, but there are far fewer slots. If you can’t get a reservation, it is possible to travel standby, but space is never guaranteed this way. Reservations are free to make, and can be canceled without charge up to 24 hours before. Reservations should be made for both the westbound trip (toward the islands) and eastbound back to Anacortes.

Once you arrive at the ferry terminal, trade your reservation for a ticket, which is about $50 for a car and driver, plus $15 per passenger, so a round-trip ticket for two people is around $65. Since this is much cheaper than a flight, and the ferry ride itself is around an hour, which is about as long as the flight, the ferries reign supreme. And despite a little inevitable hassle and confusion, once you’re onboard, there’s food and drink, alcohol and plenty of views, like the occasional whales (orcas), dolphins, sea lions and more.

Pro tip: If you do cross the ferry without a car, there are rental cars available on the island right at the ferry terminal. Then again, current demand indicates these will be expensive and are likely to book up.

Getting to the San Juan Islands by airplane

San Juan Airlines and Kenmore Air are the two carriers who regularly fly to the San Juan Islands. San Juan Airlines operate land planes and one-way tickets start at $114, but their terminal is located in Bellingham, so it’s still about an hour and a half drive from Seattle, and travelers are required to pay for parking for more than 36 hours. Kenmore Air operates both land and seaplanes, and departs from several small airports throughout Seattle, which means travelers can skip the drive. Both airlines have frequent flights to Eastsound on Orcas Island and Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, and they also offer private charters aside from scheduled flights. Rates fluctuate quite a bit based on season and booking time frame, so it’s best to connect with the airlines directly.

Visiting Orcas Island

By far the most popular and bucolic of all four islands, Orcas is the perfect place for a first-timer or newbie to begin exploring. At 57 square miles, there are multiple settled areas throughout the island, but Eastsound is the central village closest to the ferry, and the Outlook Inn is hands down the best hotel in the area. A historic property built in 1876 by Charles W. Shattuck (a homesteader who’s affectionately referred to as “the founder of Eastsound”), the building changed hands many times before settling into its contemporary iteration in the 1970s when the current owners acquired it. Columbia Hospitality , who rep a number of boutique properties in the region, took over management and operations in 2022.

Sleek white and grey interiors make the Outlook Inn’s Water’s Edge and Bay View suites the most desirable rooms on the island, as do their proximity to the water. Water’s Edge suites are, as the name suggests, right on the shoreline and separated from the main building, and Bay View suites have private balconies and unobstructed waterfront views. The inn’s own New Leaf Cafe also has waterfront views and a hyper-seasonal menu highlighting Pacific Northwest farmers and purveyors. The hotel is just a block or two from the center of town, where freshly made pastries at Brown Bear Baking and oceanfront snacks at The White Horse Pub were highlights for casual dining. On the higher-end side of things, local tasting menus at Houlme or Matia Kitchen are available Thursday to Sunday.

Outside of Eastsound, other parts of Orcas worth exploring include a drive out to Buck Bay Shellfish Farm , for caught-this-morning seafood of all kinds: oysters, shrimp, crab, halibut, salmon, clams and whatever else came in with the tide. Around another side of the island, Doe Bay Resort boasts clothing-optional hot springs and sauna , and down at Deer Harbor, sign up for a day of learning to sail with Captain Ward at Northwest Classic Daysailing . Ward has been sailing around the islands for the past two decades, and his classic 1948 wooden sloop Aura is available for booking May through October. When you’re out with him, the captain will let passengers actively sail the boat, so get ready to be put to work. He’s also incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area.

Another recommended water activity is guided sea kayaking with Shearwater Kayak Tours , and while you’re on land, a relatively easy hike up Mt. Constitution affords views of the islands for miles. Down in Rosario, yet another Orcas community, touring the historic Moran Mansion (now a museum) is another must. Self-guided tours are available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the high season. Once you’ve seen all there is to see on Orcas, it’s time to take a couple day trips to the other islands.

Visiting San Juan Island

Roche Harbor and Friday Harbor are the two central hubs on San Juan Island, although the ferry only lands at Friday Harbor. The commercial hub for the San Juan area, Friday Harbor isn’t quite as beautiful or remote as some of the other areas, but it does boast an incredibly scenic lavender farm. Visiting the Pelindaba Lavender Farm is free, and given its location right on the water, photos from this particular site are usually very epic. For the foodie side of things, make your way over to the other side of San Juan and visit Westcott Bay Shellfish Company in Roche Harbor. Their Tide Tables picnic area is literally at the water’s edge, and you can watch fishermen catch and shuck (and grill) the oysters that make their way to your table. Barbecued with various compound butters, these oysters are so good they’ve even been known to convert avowed oyster haters.

Visiting Lopez Island

Lopez is great for a day trip, but there isn’t enough to do here to warrant an overnight stay. Much smaller than either Orcas or San Juan, one thing Lopez Island is known for is its food. In fact, ice cream from the Lopez Island Creamery is so popular that it’s exported to the other islands — you can find it all over the San Juan area. But since you’re there, why not go to the source? Pints, ice cream sandwiches and ice cream pies are all on offer, and they make most of their products with solar power, just another reason to support.

Other things to check out on “Slopez,” the most laidback island of the bunch, include the ramen, gyoza and udon at Setsunai Noodle Bar , local, plant-forward dishes at Ursa Minor , and don’t forget to grab a loaf of bread at Barn Owl Bakery , where they use wheat grown and milled on Lopez with machinery from the 1800s.

Visiting Shaw Island

Known as “ the holy island ,” most visitors drawn here are intrigued by the nuns who inhabit the isle , which is just 7.7 square miles. As the smallest of the four main islands, Shaw has a population of fewer than 200 people year-round. As such, there are no hotels or rentals available, but there is one grocery store, Shaw General Store , and one park and campground area .

If you’re kayaking or hiking around the island, Shaw could be a good place to crash for the night, otherwise it’s good for an afternoon trip, and particularly good for boaters, who like the peace and quiet. Indian Cove is the perfect place to moor if you’re boating, as it’s also next to the 60-acre Shaw Island County Park, where pristine beaches and abundant tide pools make for an idyllic afternoon.

Experience Puerto Rico's History—Outside San Juan

The capital gets all the ink, but cultural attractions entice across the island.

preview for Experience Puerto Rico's History—Outside San Juan

But there is more to the history of this Caribbean territory than its capital story. There are forts and colonial attractions in quaint villages, small towns, and the foothills of the mountains. Art museums and collections are on display along with dynamic public murals, photogenic architecture, and other landmarks. Here are three of our favorite sites to see beyond Old San Juan.

Designated a forest reserve in 1919, El Bosque Seco de Guánica on the southern coast of Puerto Rico stretches over nearly 10,000 acres. Here 12 different hiking (and biking) trails wind past centurion trees, a scrub forest, and salt flats, with opportunities to swim at a cove and spy up to half of the island's birds. Among the more popular attractions in the reserve is Fuerte Caprón , a 16th-century fort built by the Spaniards. The stone structure, which was later repurposed by the U.S. military in the Spanish-American War, is best accessed via a six-mile-round-trip trail. Apart from the fort's ruins, the trek's reward is unbeatable views of the bay below.

Come for the hot springs, stay for the architecture in Coamo, the island's third-oldest town. The Taíno people believed in the healing powers of the waters here, and the island's first governor, Juan Ponce de León, is said to have thought they were the fountain of youth. Today's visitors can repose in the thermal pools after touring some notable sites. Among our favorites are the Casa Alcaldía de Coamo , the city hall, whose stately gray facade and tiled roof flaunt visible Andalusian influences. Puente de las Calabazas , a single-span lattice girder bridge that stretches over the river, was built in the 1800s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Known as la perla del Sur ("the pearl of the South"), the city of Ponce is celebrated for its cultural institutions, excellent collections, beautiful castle, and interesting early-20th-century architecture. In fact, Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) is widely considered the best art museum on the island. Its permanent collection of 4,500 works is heavy on 19th-century art and includes ceramics and decorative arts, painting and sculptures, sound installations, and more. The Castillo Serrallés Museum is set in a 1930s Spanish Revival-style home, which was constructed by the eponymous family. Today visitors are treated to a Japanese garden, a butterfly nursery, and the Vigía Cross , a soaring modern outdoor religious icon.
