Third generation architect, he is the head of the oldest architectural firm in Israeli history, that celebrated 100 years in 2019. His public buildings define in an original and thought-provoking way the elusive relationship between the expression of contemporary architecture that represent our time and era and between the iconic architecture of our founders generation. His work travels between the balancing and the contrasting, even juxtaposing between these architectural languages. Amnon guides in English and Hebrew.

Tel Aviv Architecture – Introduction

Tel Aviv is located in the west of the country, located on the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second largest city in Israel, forming the country’s economic and contemporary cultural heart.

Tel Aviv was founded by the Jewish community on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa in 1909. Tel Aviv’s White City, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, comprises the world’s largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings. Tel Aviv has the second-largest economy in the Middle East after Dubai. Tel Aviv is currently the fifth-most-visited city in the Middle East and Africa. It is known as “the city that never sleeps”.

The city also has good contemporary architecture – with significant recent buildings being – Design Museum Holon, Rothschild Tower, Tel Aviv Museum of Art Extension, Peace Peres House, Jaffa and the Museum + Archive – Jabotinsky Center. These buildings are all possible to visit on our Israeli Architecture Tours .

A Walking Tour of Tel Aviv's Architectural Landmarks

Tel Aviv offers a wide array of architectural styles from Bauhaus to eclectic

Tel Aviv’s White City is world famous for its impressive collection of unique bauhaus —or international style —architecture. But from art-deco to eclectic, the city is full of great buildings that are as historic and well kept as they are architecturally distinct. Here’s a great walking tour of central Tel Aviv’s architectural landmarks.

The pagoda house.

Hidden in the small King Albert Square in the heart of the Tel Aviv’s Lev Ha’ir district, the Pagoda House is hard to miss. Perched on the fork of Nahmani and Montefiore streets, this massive eclectic-style building was designed in 1924 by Alexander Levy and combines oriental and western motifs. It is currently owned by a Swedish magnate Robert Weil who is now once again revamping it.

The Pagoda House was the first private residence in the city to have an elevator, and it seems it’s been the envy of everyone in the city ever since. It’s a great place to start your walking tour and there’s a local kosher bakery on the corner called Ben Ami where you can grab a quick snack. If you want a fancy breakfast, to start your day head to The Norman , located further up the street.

HESEG House (aka: The Russian Embassy House or The Levin House)

Located on 46 Rothschild Boulevard, The Russian Embassy House is—you guessed it—the former home of the Russian embassy in Israel. Also of the eclectic style, this city icon was built in 1924 by Yehuda Magidovitch, one of Israel’s most prolific architects, for the wealthy Levin family.

It soon became the Soviet Union’s mission in Tel Aviv, but fraught relations between the two countries eventually led it to be sold to Sotheby’s , the British auction house, and throughout the 90s it served as its showroom, earning it the name the Sotheby’s House. A decade ago, the house changed owners once again, being sold for a whopping 35 million shekels (US$9,610,968) to two Jewish philanthropists who now run their foundation from the exquisite structure.

The Great Synagogue, 110 Alenbi Street

Completed in 1926, Tel Aviv’s Great Synagogue is also the architectural brainchild of Yehuda Magidovitch and is considered an early example of how he peppered his eclectic style buildings with Art Deco themes. This storied building’s cornerstone was laid in 1913 but was only completed after the First World War with the help of donations from the wealthy Rothschild family. It boasts a beautiful dome and magnificent stained glass windows replicating some of those destroyed in European synagogues during the Holocaust.

The Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv in the 1930’s

The building’s outer facade was done by architect Ze’ev Rechter at the end of the 1930s as part of a masterplan to build an Italian-style plaza around the building.

Today, the area surrounding the synagogue is among the hippest in Tel Aviv, with a number of great bars and restaurants—all named after places in Egypt, as the street is called Mount Sinai after the desert peninsula where the Jewish people were said to have received the Ten Commandments—giving the local secular hotspot a light biblical twist.

The Port Sa’id , on its western side, is a super hip restaurant by Tel Aviv’s star chef Eyal Shani, and is the place to try contemporary Tel Aviv cuisine. The Santa Caterina , to the north, is a fantastic restaurant offering a great new twist on the local kitchen. In terms of bars, at night, the Otzar is the ideal place for a drink and dance.

A seven minute walk down the bustling Allenby St., heading west to Bialik St., a cove of architectural gems await. At the end of the picturesque cobblestone street lays the epicenter of the Bialik Square complex—Tel Aviv’s first town hall. The Beit Ha’ir , as well as the adjacent structures, are part of UNESCO’s White City world heritage sites and are a prime example of Tel Aviv’s unique take on the international style, with a mix of Bauhaus architecture and local motifs. Initially destined to be a hotel, Beit Ha’ir was designed by Moshe Cherner.

Beit Ha’ir, Bialik St 27, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Tel Aviv’s Beit Ha’ir in the Bialik Square complex is Tel Aviv’s first town hall

Beit Bialik

Right next door is the short-lived home of Israel’s national poet, Haim Nahman Bialik. The Bialik House sits along the eponymous street and square and the great poet had the strange honor of living in a house and street that were named after him—with both bearing his name from the onset. Despite the best efforts by the municipality, the Hebrew wordsmith hated living in the city as the house became a site of pilgrimage for fans, and he quickly converted it to a cultural center and moved to the neighboring city of Ramat Gan, though city hall denied it for years.

Built in 1925 by Joseph Minor, a student of Alexander Baerwald (who is best known for designing the Technion University campus in Haifa), the building is considered a classic example of the Hebrew style of architecture. Its interior is inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the structure also includes a tower, exquisite outdoor terraces, domes, pointed-arch windows and extensive tilework replicating the designs of Ze’ev Raban—an architectural trailblazer who studied at the Bezalel school , which forms the bedrock of Israel’s art and design scene.

Bauhaus Museum

On the other side of the Bialek Square lies Tel Aviv’s Bauhaus Museum —not to be confused with the Bauhaus Center on Dizengoff. This museum sits on the ground floor of a classic international style building erected in 1934. Entrance to the museum is free, and it’s well worth a visit, but beware: it’s open only twice a week, on Wednesdays (11 a.m-5 p.m) and Fridays (10 a.m-2 p.m).

Rubin Museum (Reuven House)

Also in the local Hebrew style, the Rubin House is the former residence of one Israel’s most famous early artists, Reuven Rubin. He was a Romanian-born painter who and leader of the first generation of Israeli artists to graduate from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, and spearheaded the Eretz Yisrael artistic style. The museum came about after Rubin himself signed an agreement in 1974 with the mayor at the time, shortly before he died, bequeathing his home. It’s a great way to see how art and architecture can mesh in this truly cultural city.

If you’re hungry head to the Cafe Bialek for lunch or grab a falafel at the amazing Johnny’s Falafel on Tchernichovski St.

Bauhaus Architecture and the White City

Rothschild

Along with the artistic performances and events that it offers, Tel Aviv is also a study in architectural fascination, not only because of its latest futuristic edifices, even for those for whom architecture is little more than a 12-letter word. In Jaffa’s ancient port area (a marina today, complemented by a variety of other tourism options), mediaeval motifs were expanded upon under Ottoman and British Empire rule and then absorbed within Tel Aviv.

During the 1930s, when the modernist movement in art reached its zenith in Europe, Tel Aviv, hardly out of its teens, was in a stage of intensive development, with most of its architects coming from Europe and bringing with them the ideas of the modernist movement. Influenced by the works of Le Corbusier, Erich Mendelsohn, and especially the Bauhaus School of Art and Design, they constructed what has become the largest and most impressive collection of Bauhaus architecture anywhere in the world, transforming parts of Tel Aviv’s central area into a source of beauty and even inspiration for those that seek out such aesthetic forms. In 2003, UNESCO proclaimed the “White City” of Tel Aviv, its Bauhaus areas, to be a World Heritage Site, citing that: "The White City of Tel Aviv is a synthesis of outstanding significance of the various trends of the Modern Movement in architecture and town planning in the early part of the 20th century. Such influences were adapted to the cultural and climatic conditions of the place, as well as being integrated with local traditions.”. Ever since then, Bauhaus Architecture and the White City have become synonymous with Tel Aviv. Travel publication Condé Nast Traveler has ranked Tel Aviv and its White City Bauhaus architecture as one of the world's top-10 recommended architecture destinations and the city is about to inaugurate the White City Center, a municipal museum devoted to Bauhaus, which is scheduled to open in 2019. The Bauhaus Center on Dizengoff St, houses a permanent and temporary exhibition and a shop.

The Bauhaus Center offers Bauhaus walking tours in Hebrew, English, Russian, German, French and Italian. Other than this, the municipality has its own Bauhaus tour, free, of charge every Saturday morning, departing from 46 Rothschild Blvd., and private, more academic or professional tours are also available.

Bauhaus was not just architecture, but design and crafts too, and a small museum dedicated to these achievements is open at Bialik Sq.

Bauhaus Hotels

Today, the city has about 4000 buildings in the International style – the Tel Aviv version of Bauhaus – including a number of newer, smaller hotels like the Cinema and Center Chic, Atlas Chain properties facing on another on Dizengoff Sq., Rothschild, Norman and Poli House, all in transformed Bauhaus properties, about 1100 of which have been earmarked for preservation.

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

The Department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning. The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events. Please see the latest Israel Security Alert .

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ( [email protected] for those in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza or [email protected] for those in Israel outside of Jerusaleml).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

Delta Air Lines to Resume Flights to Tel Aviv This Week

The airline's route from New York will resume on Friday.

Delta Air Lines will resume flights to Tel Aviv this week, becoming the latest airline to relaunch its route.

The carrier will restart flights between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) on June 7, Delta announced. The route will operate daily on an Airbus A330-900neo aircraft.

“The decision to resume the route on June 7, 2024, which was temporarily suspended in October 2023, follows an extensive security risk assessment by the airline,” Delta wrote in a statement. “Delta continues to closely monitor the situation in Israel in conjunction with government and private-sector partners.”

Like most airlines around the world, Delta paused its service to Israel in October 2023 following the start of the war in Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The decision to restart service to the country comes months after United Airlines did the same from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in March. However, in April, United once again temporarily suspended flights to the country following security concerns between Israel and Iran, Reuters reported .

A spokesperson for United confirmed to Travel + Leisure the airline will once again resume flights on June 6.

While Delta has not flown to Israel, its codeshare partner, EL AL Israel Airlines , has continued to operate between the country and the United States.

The U.S. Department of State, which designates Hamas as a foreign terrorist organization , has issued an advisory for U.S. citizens to “reconsider travel” to both Israel and the West Bank due to “terrorism and civil unrest,” and to not travel to Gaza “due to terrorism and armed conflict.”

“The security situation remains unpredictable, and U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire, often take place without warning,” the State Department wrote about travel to Israel.

The State Department added the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue to conduct “large-scale military operations in Gaza” and the “U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.”

SAP Enters into Agreement to Acquire WalkMe, Driving Business Transformation by Enhancing the Customer Experience and Enriching SAP Business AI Offerings

SAP Enters into Agreement to Acquire WalkMe, Driving Business Transformation by Enhancing the Customer Experience and Enriching SAP Business AI Offerings

WALLDORF — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) and WalkMe Ltd. (NASDAQ: WKME) announced today that the companies have entered into a definitive agreement under which SAP will acquire WalkMe, a leader in digital adoption platforms (DAPs).

WalkMe’s solutions help organizations navigate constant technology change by providing users with advanced guidance and automation features that enable them to execute workflows seamlessly across any number of applications. This results in higher adoption of the underlying application and as such drives value realization.

The Executive and Supervisory Boards of SAP SE and the board of directors of WalkMe have approved the transaction for US $14.00 per share in an all-cash transaction, representing an equity value of approximately US $1.5 billion. The offer price represents a 45% premium to WalkMe’s closing share price on June 4, 2024.

The envisioned combination complements SAP’s Business Transformation Management portfolio around SAP Signavio and SAP LeanIX solutions to help customers on their transformation journeys.

“Applications, processes, data and people are the four key elements of a successful business transformation,” said Christian Klein, CEO and member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. “By acquiring WalkMe, we are doubling down on the support we provide our end users, helping them to quickly adopt new solutions and features to get the maximum value out of their IT investments.”

WalkMe: Focus on Analyzing Adoption and Business Transformation

“We are thrilled to join forces with SAP. This acquisition marks a significant milestone in our journey, providing us with the resources and customer base necessary to enhance our product offerings and expand our market reach,” said Dan Adika, CEO of WalkMe. “By leveraging SAP’s extensive ecosystem, we are poised to unlock substantial growth opportunities and deliver even greater value to our customers. Together, we look forward to a future filled with innovation and exceptional service.”

WalkMe helps organizations boost enterprise productivity and lower risk by enabling consistent, effective and efficient use of software and the workflows it enables. Its DAP works on top of an organization’s application landscape, detects where people encounter friction and provides the tailored support and automation they need to complete the job to be done, right in the flow of work, across any application. Importantly, WalkMe will continue to fully support non-SAP applications.

Soon, WalkMe will launch the WalkMe X copilot, which will use WalkMe’s contextual awareness and AI to suggest the best next step for any workflow, anywhere. WalkMe X has the capability to always be on, serving as an overlay to any application, including copilots from different vendors that companies use in their landscapes. Integrating the strength of WalkMe’s adoption capabilities with SAP’s copilot Joule will boost AI assistant and productivity gains for all SAP customers. Additionally, integrating distinctive e-learning features in the SAP Enable Now solution with WalkMe will form the center of SAP’s people-centric transformation approach going forward.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of WalkMe shareholder approval and necessary regulatory clearances, and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2024. The impact of the transaction on SAP’s non-IFRS earnings per share for fiscal 2024 is expected to be immaterial.
