Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

A defining feature on the Anaconda horizon is the 585-foot-tall brick tower known as the Anaconda Smelter Stack. This massive masonry was constructed in 1918 as part of the region's booming copper mining industry. It stands today as the tallest freestanding brick structure in the world.

The Smelter Stack ceased operations in 1980. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in the region's upbringing. Visitors aren't allowed to approach the Smelter Stack or tour the facility. Still, thanks to its prominence, it's impossible not to catch a glimpse when passing through town.

Anaconda Smelter Stack

For one of the closest views and extra information, head to Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park , southeast of the town center. Here, a concrete patio and tower viewers lend a slightly better look at the smelter stack, situated just over a mile away. The site also has interpretive information detailing the stack's construction and its legacy tied to the copper industry.

Pintler Veterans' Memorial Scenic Highway

The Pintler Veterans' Memorial Scenic Highway is a 64-mile route that connects Anaconda to Philipsburg and Drummond . It offers an incredibly scenic alternative to the interstate between Butte and Missoula. And with skiing, wilderness areas, and massive lakes along the way, it's a real avenue for adventure from Anaconda.

The route passes through large swaths of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest . One of the first major attractions on the highway heading west from Anaconda is Georgetown Lake . The sterling Anaconda Pintler Mountains back this massive reservoir, offering a fun place for a day or weekend outing.

Pintler Mountains, accessed via the Pintler Scenic Byway

Several trailheads are accessible from the scenic highway. Some of these trails venture into the iconic Anaconda Pintler Wilderness with startling, jagged peaks cresting the Continental Divide. Farther along the scenic highway, Discovery Ski Area beckons for adventures throughout the year. This favorite ski destination thaws in the spring to reveal professional mountain bike trails in the summer. And Philipsburg, farther north, is another one of the best small towns in Montana .

Old Works Golf Course

The Old Works Golf Course offers Montana's most unique golfing experience and the only Jack Nicklaus course open to the public in the state. This 18-hole course has several tee locations to accommodate all abilities. And the course's copper mining origins are abundant throughout the round.

The golf course sits atop what used to be the location of Anaconda's first copper smelter. This Old Works lay dormant for several years until its designation as a Superfund site in 1983. Less than six years later, with massive citizen and government effort, and a little design help by Jack Nicklaus, the Old Works Golf Course opened to the public.

Alongside early mining relics lining some of the fairways, prominent views of the distant Anaconda Smelter Stack are available from a few tee boxes. The course's most notable touch of history comes from the black sand traps, infused with slag — a byproduct of the copper smelting process.

However, some may argue they best pair with the cold temperatures of winter. The outdoor pool also features a massive 350-foot enclosed waterslide that entices visitors of all ages.

Historic building in Anaconda

Anaconda, thanks to its copper smelting heydays, is one of the most historic towns in Montana. And seeing this history is an unavoidable part of any visit. From the towering Anaconda Smelter Stack to the original buildings in Anaconda's Historic District , the town's industrious past is everywhere.

An Anaconda Historic Bus Tour is an excellent way to dive deep into this history and gain a little context of the area. These 90-minute tours depart from the Anaconda Visitor Center between mid-May and mid-September. The tours take place in vintage red open-air buses that came from Yellowstone National Park.

A few places highlighted on the guided tour include the historic Deer Lodge County Courthouse and the Washoe Theatre . Old Works Golf Course and Montana's first fish hatchery are also on the route. The bus drivers each have a personality of their own, and the easy banter between guests makes for a fun and breezy afternoon exploring history.

Lower drop of Lost Creek Falls

For a closer adventure to town, Lost Creek State Park is easily accessible with a 12-mile drive. This state park unit features spectacular mountain scenery surrounded by forested slopes. However, the biggest draw to Lost Creek is the 50-foot Lost Creek Falls tumbling in segments down a rock face.

It's a short jaunt from the farthest parking area to the falls. This proximity to the trailhead makes it a popular destination for families with young children. But adults also enjoy the cascading effects of the waterfall. And more ambitious hikers can continue the trail past the waterfall as it winds more miles alongside Lost Creek.

Other activities at the park include picnicking, mountain biking, and photography. The state park also has 25 first-come, first-served campsites accessible for RVs up to 23 feet long. Whether camping or not, common wildlife sightings include mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

Georgetown Lake

Georgetown Lake is a massive mountain reservoir located between Anaconda and Philipsburg on the Pintler Scenic Byway . It's a popular place to visit throughout the year for recreation, especially in the summer months. Typical activities include boating, hiking, fishing, and camping.

Stunning mountain backdrops line much of the entire lake, which encompasses over 3,000 acres. Several campgrounds and day-use areas surround the highway closest to the lake. These places to visit include public boat ramps for launching vessels onto the water. Local shops, restaurants, and a small community also punctuate this stretch of shoreline.

Surrounded by Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, the lake is also a great jumping-off point for extended adventures. To the south, the expansive Anaconda Pintler Wilderness is accessible through a variety of trailheads. This roadless wilderness encompasses over 150,000 acres of untouched mountain terrain.

World Museum of Mining in Butte

If Anaconda is the most historic town in Montana, then much of that is thanks to its neighbor Butte, 24 miles to the east. Anaconda was founded as a company town to support the copper output from the prosperous mines in Butte. And more specifically, Anaconda was established to support copper smelting operations.

Butte and Anaconda comprised one of the most productive mining regions in the nation at the turn of the 1900s. And Butte continued to extract copper for a remarkable 80-plus years before closing in the 1980s. The remnants of the Richest Hill on Earth are still spread throughout the town.

A few things to check out on a day trip to Butte include the World Museum of Mining and the Mineral Museum . These two engaging museums highlight the history and underground appeal of the surrounding town. Trolley tours, historical adventure tours, and paranormal excursions are also available throughout the year.

Anaconda is a small town with a population of approximately 9,000 residents. Still, the influx of tourist traffic lends to a handful of excellent hotels, motels, and a hot spring resort. Many of the most desired properties are near the town center with easy access to area restaurants and attractions.

  • Fairmont Hot Springs Resort: Offering not only one of the top things to do while visiting, Fairmont Hot Springs is also one of the best places to stay. This all-inclusive resort includes dining, tee-times, spa activities, and two heated Olympic size pools. Standard rooms and up to two-bedroom suites are available.

  • Grizzly Den Motel: On the east side of town, this budget-friendly motel features clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel also features standard amenities, like air-conditioning, wireless internet, and cable TV.

West Side Historic District, Anaconda

Marcus Daly watched with pride as Anaconda steadily gained momentum after its founding in 1883. While Daly’s social and political ambition was reflected in the elegant downtown Montana Hotel, Anaconda Company managers, city officials, and other affluent residents built homes adjacent to and west of Main Street. The West Side encompasses a majority of the city’s original townsite and includes some of Anaconda’s most elaborate residences as well as impressive public buildings and modest dwellings. The buildings of the West Side’s eclectic streetscapes, diverse in both style and function, feature Victorian-era spindling, scrollwork, and leaded glass as well as early twentieth-century Craftsman-style detailing. Cast-iron street lamps, locally produced by the Tuttle Manufacturing and Supply Company, visually unified the district by 1920. Judge George B. Winston was the first to build a fine home on the West Side in 1888. By 1890, expensive architect-designed homes were scattered throughout the neighborhood. Designs of local and regional architects include those of Joseph Smith, Martin Kern, Fred Willson, and Herman Kemna. Prominent early residents included Anaconda Standard editor John Durston, county attorney John Boarman, Superintendent of Schools W. K. Dwyer, metallurgist Frederick Laist, and Marcus Daly’s two sisters. The City Common (Kennedy Common), with its distinctive bandstand and winter skating rink, anchors the northeast corner of the district. The Deer Lodge County Courthouse, Hearst Free Library, Washoe Theatre, Brentwood Apartments, and three historic churches are integral to the civic, educational, and social tapestry of a planned community that took root in the dreams of its founder, Marcus Daly.

Anaconda’s Unexpected History on the Continental Divide

This unique town has access to the outdoor recreation you’d expect from southwestern montana with a surprising and delicious culinary history that lives on today..

Serving as a stopover city for Continental Divide Trail hikers and 20 minutes from practically any outdoor recreation you could wish for, Anaconda, Montana is a good spot for those looking to connect with the West’s boom-and-bust history. The town was founded on smelting, the process of extracting metal from ore, and still holds its mining roots close today.

Anaconda’s Smelting History

In 1883 mining magnet Marcus Daly founded the town to process copper ore from the mines in nearby Butte. While the smelter was shut down in 1980 and cleanup efforts began, the original 585-foot smokestack remains standing and is the tallest freestanding masonry structure in the world. The stack, which is taller than the Washington Monument, sits in Montana’s smallest state park, Stack State Park. The stack can only be viewed from a distance, except for one day a year on Smelterman’s Day. In August, the town celebrates its heritage with live music, a brew fest, a parade and fun run, an art walk and more. On this day, the public can take a tour with a ranger to the stack and see it up-close.

The world’s tallest freestanding masonry structure in Anaconda, Mont.

On weekdays throughout the summer at 10 a.m., you can learn more about the town’s history by boarding a vintage 1936 tour bus that used to carry tourists in Glacier National Park at the Discover Anaconda Visitor Center. The volunteer-run tour will bring you past historic sites and buildings where you’ll learn more about the city’s early smelting days.

Anaconda history tours in a vintage red bus.

The city’s founder, Marcus Daly, was an Irish immigrant who started from nothing and became one of the west’s “Copper Kings.” His rags-to-riches story drew many Irish immigrants to work for him, and Anaconda still has a strong Irish heritage today. Residents go big for St. Patrick’s Day, but the rest of the year you can experience the town’s Irish roots by sampling Cornish pasties. This dish, which is like a turnover filled with beef and vegetables, was a staple lunch for miners. Head to Peppermint Patty’s, an unassuming spot that serves pasties along with their locally famous pork chop sandwich. It’s a local debate whether the pasties should be served with ketchup or brown gravy, so you better order both and decide for yourself.

Get Outside

Cyclist near Georgetown Lake

Once you learn about the history of the town, it’s time to focus on the present and that’s the incredible outdoor opportunities that await you. Take Hwy. 1, 20 minutes northwest of Anaconda to Georgetown Lake, a reservoir that sits higher in elevation than town making it the perfect place to cool off in the summer. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard at Moose Marina or enjoy a picnic along the shores of the lake.

Hiking at Georgetown Lake in Anaconda, Mont.

Get a taste of the Continental Divide Trail, which crosses the entire United States from the Canadian border in Glacier National Park to the Mexican border in New Mexico outside of Anaconda by hiking the 13-mile out-and-back section to Upper Seymour Lake. Start at the trailhead just past Lower Seymour Lake Campground and hike to the stunningly clear alpine lake framed by craggy peaks.

For a mellower hike right in town, hit Anaconda’s trail system at the end of Cedar Street near the Visitor Center. You’ll reach a junction at 0.4 miles where you can head east to see the site of the Old Works Smelter, or west to reach Washoe Park which was built by the Anaconda Company and still has a duck pond, a swimming pool and a fish hatchery.

If you’re camping, Lost Creek State Park is one of the area’s best kept secrets. Forested campsites with views of picturesque cliff bands await. Don’t miss the short hike to Lost Creek Falls, where a 50-foot waterfall cascades down the mountain.

Or, for a unique perspective on the surrounding Montana wilderness, experience it from the air. Book an adventure with Montana Zipline Adventures just outside of Anaconda where you’ll soar through the air at the state’s longest zipline course.

Hungry? Head for the Caboose

When it’s time for dinner, head to Smelter City Brewing. Try the town-favorite Anaconda Standard, or one of the seasonal offerings. Grab dinner from Anaconda Taco Company’s food truck housed in a caboose on-site. Don’t miss Stoplight Art Gallery, which is adjacent to the brewery. More of a wine drinker? Stop by Bighorn Bottle Shop and Wine Bar for a glass and a bottle to take back home with you.

Delivering world-class wildlife encounters since 2010

Big fish expeditions founder andy murch has spent the last three decades chasing big animals all over the world. few people have andy’s knowledge and organizational skills necessary to put together a professional expedition. have a look through some of the comments from our guests: testimonials., guest feedback, about big fish expeditions.

5 stars! I’ve been on three trips with Big Fish Expeditions. Each one was well organized and jam packed with unique wildlife encounters. I am booked for another trip next year and for many more to come. Highly recommended!!

GO. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!

I have been on 3 Big Fish Expeditions trips by now and have more trips to look forward to in the near future. First of all I share a big passion for sharks, whale and other big marine life and Big Fish Expedition is all about that. As an amateur photographer is great to be among equals and even better to get new tips and ideas from professionals.

Andy is very helpful showing new tricks and talk about UW photography in between dives. Sure the destinations offers world class diving but it’s also about the people and the relation to people and Andy surely gives everyone the feeling of being very welcome and try to give everyone a lifetime experience.

Another good thing is that Andy is maybe the only pro shooters who offers trips to very reasonable prices. I won’t go into details about all the good dives I’ve done with Big Fish but instead say GO, you will never regret it!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING TIME WITH BIG FISH EXPEDITIONS

Andy is one of the best in the business. I would highly, highly recommend anyone interested in an animal focused trip to go with big fish expeditions.  The quality of experience and knowledge of the trip leader really sets them apart. Expect to get your fill of animals no matter what the trip is. Andy is also great at finding other animals to incorporate within the trips.  If you’re looking for a shark trip or big animal experience, this is your place. Period.  Enjoy!

Just returned from my second trip with BFE and it went off perfectly. The true adventure of these trips always present challenging logistics but they pulled it off flawlessly. I would highly recommend BFE to anyone looking to get “off the grid” and experience a wildlife trip of a lifetime. I am looking forward to my next adventure with them. Thanks again!!

Anaconda attack captured on video, leaps out of water and bites tour guide.

It was like a scene out of the movie “Anaconda.”

A Brazilian fishing guide got a closer wildlife encounter than intended after a giant anaconda leaped out of the water and bit him. A shocking clip of the harrowing herpetological encounter is making a splash online.

“When I was filming the anaconda, she pulled away and I saw that she was about to strike,” Joao Severino, 38, told Jam Press of the alarming moment.

The angling expert had reportedly spotted the serpent while guiding a boat full of tourists on the Araguaia River in the central Brazilian state of Goiás.

“I saw the snake on a stump and I said, ‘Look, guys, an anaconda is over there, I’m going to film it for you to see,'” Severino recalled.

"When I was filming the anaconda, she pulled away and I saw that she was about to strike," said fishing guide Joao Severino.

That’s when he inadvertently ended the trip with a fang.

In the accompanying 35-second POV clip, filmed via the guide’s phone, the camera zooms in on a black-spotted snake coiled below the water near two partially submerged stumps. In a flash, the serpent lunges out of the water and strikes the tour guide, who cries out in shock.

The behemoth boa then disappears back into the drink as the guide and his guests erupt into relieved laughter.

While not known to attack humans, green anacondas will attack when they feel threatened.

Thankfully, the scaly predator failed to penetrate Severino’s skin and he was able to laugh off the attack.

The fishing guide should thank his lucky stars he wasn’t injured by the green anaconda, which is the world’s largest snake, capable of growing up to 30 feet long and 550 pounds with a diameter of 10 inches .

“They aren’t venomous but they are extremely strong, one of the most agile snakes that exists underwater,” biologist Edson Abrao told Viral Press. “They are animals that feed and kill their prey underwater.”

While not known to attack humans, the South American constrictor will attack “when they feel threatened,” explained the snake expert.

In a far more terrifying snake attack in 2020, a Thai teen had to be hospitalized after a python bit his penis while he was on the toilet.

Jennifer Lopez’s Canceled Tour, and Society’s Twisted Pleasure in Seeing Strong Women Fail

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

For a variety of reasons, one of the biggest stories in entertainment this year has been the precarious state of Jennifer Lopez ’s “This Is Me… Now” tour, which was finally put out of its misery yesterday.

Related Stories

Ai could contribute to virtual production sector growth, dolly parton hails beyoncé's version of 'jolene' as 'bold,' says she would duet with her at the grammy awards, popular on variety.

Just a few days earlier, another major act canceled their own overly ambitious North American tour that was scheduled to hit many of the same arenas that J-Lo’s was — the male rock duo the Black Keys. After that news broke, people asked what that said about the state of the touring business.

But when J. Lo canceled her tour just days later, people asked what it says about her.

As a society, why do we do that?

Broadly speaking, the reasons for both cancellations are the same: An artist past their commercial prime makes an overly optimistic projection about the response to their new project, gets it wrong, and pays the price — as do their partners in the enterprise, from promoters and venues down to dancers and truck drivers, because it takes a village to put on a tour of that size, and literally hundreds of people’s livelihoods are affected by those cancelations (which is something conveniently forgotten in the thinly veiled glee much of the public seems to take in such missteps).

Granted, the pop audience that J-Lo is targeting is very different from the more-loyal, less-fickle rock fans the Black Keys were aiming at. The pop world that J-Lo inhabits has the attention span of a smart fish and is infamously unforgiving of perceived transgressions, which can span from intentional factors — like a romantic partner who fans decide they don’t like — to unintended ones like, say, a multifaceted, self-absorbed autobiographical project by someone who famously is not the world’s kindest or most gracious superstar. For all her Bronx toughness and swagger, J-Lo has always been a pop artist and she knows that game and everything that comes with it.

But fame and power put people at a remove from reality, and it’s ultimately irrelevant whether everyone in her orbit also thought this project and tour were a great idea, or whether no one dared to say, “Hey, after the disastrous failure of ‘Gigli’” — the dreadful 2003 Affleck-Lopez film that not only destroyed the pair as a commercial property, but also helped tank the first era of their relationship — “maybe reviving Bennifer as a commercial enterprise isn’t a great idea?” The end result was the same: a canceled tour and a stiff album. Artists make similar miscalculations every year.

Yet the online venom and hateration that has surrounded the failure of this enterprise has been epic in scale. The term schadenfreude — a combination of the German nouns Schaden, meaning “damage” or “harm,” and Freude, meaning “joy,” per Merriam-Webster — means taking pleasure, often illogical pleasure, in others’ misfortune. And while men certainly can be victims of it — does anyone remember Martin Shkreli and his unusually punchable face ? — society certainly seems to reserve the worst of its venom for powerful, successful, talented women.

It’s a matter of public record that women’s rights are under ferocious attack, from Iran, Afghanistan and Russia to the United States and our arguably corrupt Supreme Court, multiple state governments and even Benedictine College’s commencement . But the hate isn’t coming exclusively from men. At a certain point, we decide we don’t like a public figure anymore without really knowing — or at least without consciously thinking about — why.

Except subconsciously, it’s probably not that deep. Sometimes we just don’t like or get tired of someone’s face (cf. Shkreli, who never had a chance), sometimes we resent their success, sometimes we also resent their happiness, or at least their seeming flaunting of it. In the wider public eye, J-Lo seems to have run afoul of the latter two, and the rumors that she and Affleck may be separating after less than two years of marriage seem an almost inevitable final act before a (probably equally inevitable) redemption chapter, after everyone finally realizes how unfair they were (cf. Britney Spears).

This is a road that Beyonce also went down at the peak of her career. She (apparently) shared the challenges that her own marriage was facing — and intensified her already-deep connection with her audience — in the lyrics of her galvanizing “Lemonade” album and tour… but then made a sort of happy-ending follow-up with her 2018 duet album with husband Jay-Z, “Everything Is Love,” which landed well initially but in retrospect is self-indulgent, treacly and awkwardly self-congratulatory: It’s just hard to have much empathy for two near-billionaires singing about how difficult it was coming through the fire. Their ruling status — and the fact that people are genuinely afraid of their fanbases — enabled them to dodge the storm that usually follows such hubris.

J-Lo, as we’re seeing, hasn’t dodged those bullets. At 54, she’s at a tricky point in a pop star career: Hit singles for artists at that age are as rare as Bigfoot sightings — Cher’s “Believe” and Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” the two main examples that come to mind, were released more than a quarter-century apart — and only generationally defining stars with enormous catalogs of hits, like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel can tour arenas into retirement age. What’s missing from that category? Women. Most of the top-grossing female touring artists — Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pink — are under 45. The only one who isn’t, Madonna, at 65 played to some middling audiences on her just-completed, mostly triumphant “Celebration” tour, as well as an estimated 1.6 million people at the final concert in Brazil. She’s weathered all of the above storms — and then some — and come out on top, but it’s taken hurricane-force, once-in-a-generation level of determination (and probably has taken quite a personal toll as well).

Variety pursued the reports of J. Lo’s poor ticket sales — and those of the Black Keys and others —aggressively, not for reasons of schadenfreude but because such stories are important in our corner of the media world, and it’s a sad fact of our business that bad news gets a lot more clicks than good news. Her fans swarmed on us, which comes with the turf, but the stories were hugely successful. As it does every time schadenfreude piles up on a female public figure, I was reminded of something: During the heyday of Lena Dunham’s TV series “Girls,” there was a video meme — or whatever passed for a meme in 2012 — of young women making comical, snarky opinions about show, with one of them saying, “I’ve never seen it… but I think I don’t like it.”

It was a joke, but still, that statement seems like a sadly perfect distillation of the amount of thought, let alone logic, that goes into the kind of hateration that J. Lo and so many other female public figures are receiving right now. It’s also not hard to imagine that syndrome playing a major role in many other successful women being brought down a peg after a majority of people decide they just don’t like her, not least the defeat of Hillary Clinton by her unapologetically misogynist opponent in 2016.

J. Lo is a great artist and she will be fine, and she’s clearly tough enough to weather all of this. But why should she have to? There’s obviously more going on here than just a canceled tour, and it does make one wonder whether the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude and our role in furthering it is a problem that goes beyond a few “harmless” clicks.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Nicki Minaj’s concert in Manchester scheduled for Saturday night was postponed after police in the Netherlands discovered marijuana in her bags as she was preparing to leave the country.

Promoter Live Nation said the performance will be rescheduled and tickets will be honored.

“Despite Nicki’s best efforts to explore every possible avenue to make tonight’s show happen, the events of today have made it impossible,” the promoter said in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed by the inconvenience this has caused.”

Minaj tweeted earlier Saturday that she was stopped at the Amsterdam airport as she was about to board a plane for the concert in Manchester. Police told her they found marijuana in her bags, and it would have to be weighed, she tweeted. Cannabis is illegal in the Netherlands, but it is tolerated for recreational use.

Robert Van Kapel, a spokesperson for the Netherlands military police, said a 41-year-old American woman had been arrested for exporting “soft drugs.” He did not identify the woman or elaborate on the type of drugs in question. Police later tweeted that they fined the woman and released her.

Minaj, who is 41 years old, tweeted that she believes police just wanted to make her late for her concert in Manchester.

“Told you, it’s to try to make me late so that they can write negative stories. Jealousy is a disease. You know the rest,” Minaj tweeted.

Her representatives didn’t immediately respond to messages Saturday.

The Trinidadian-born rapper is best known for her hits “Super Freaky Girl,” “Anaconda” and “Starships.” She has been nominated for 12 Grammy awards over the course of her career. The Manchester concert is part of her “Pink Friday 2” tour, which includes stops in Paris, Poland, Germany, Romania and Switzerland.

Associated Press journalists Michael Corder in The Hague, Netherlands, and Sian Watson in Cannes, France, contributed to this report.
