National News | Kamala Harris’ bus tour pauses in Georgia after member of motorcade crashes

The incident unfolded Wednesday night on Interstate 516 in Savannah, WJCL reported.

According to local authorities, Corporal David Bates lost control of his motorcycle and wiped out around 7:20 p.m.  He was rushed in critical condition to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he continued to recover on Thursday, police said. He has since been labeled in stable condition.

A photo from the scene shows a pair of police officers huddled over the injured motorcyclist as his blood pooled in the street.

Bates did not hit anyone or anything else. Police said he was the only person injured in the crash.

“The Savannah Police Department is supporting Corporal Bates and his family as he begins his recovery from injuries sustained in this vehicle accident,” Chief Lenny Gunther told the news station. “We will be by his side every step of the way.”

The Secret Service on Thursday said it was “aware of an incident that occurred during a motorcade movement yesterday.”

Members of the press following Harris told TMZ the bus stopped for a few minutes before continuing onward.

“The movement was not affected by the incident,” said Frederick Houston, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office. “We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery.”

It’s not clear what exactly caused Bates to crash at this time.

Prior to the incident, Harris and Walz made a campaign stop at Sandfly BBQ , where they chatted with patrons and sampled some food.

“This is not a political post, restaurants don’t vote,” Sandfly BBQ wrote alongside a series of photos on Instagram, all of which feature a beaming Harris. “But it’s not everyday the Vice President of the United States comes into your business.”

Vice President Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, are back on their campaign bus. The pair are together on the campaign trail for the first time since last week’s Democratic convention. This time, they’re on a two-day bus tour of Georgia.

Their trip is taking them into areas of the state that don’t always get attention from Democratic politicians. It will also be the site of Harris’ first major network interview since becoming her party’s nominee for president, on Thursday.

The attention this week is just the latest sign that Georgia, a state President Biden narrowly won in 2020, is once again in play this election year.

“This area is a priority for the campaign: we have nearly 50 full-time staff across 7 offices in South Georgia,” said Porsha White, the Georgia state director for the Harris campaign, ahead of the trip. “This will be the first time a general election presidential candidate will have campaigned in Savannah since the 1990s.”

Upon arrival in Savannah, Harris and Walz greeted students from Savannah State University, the oldest public HBCU in Georgia, before boarding their campaign bus.

Their first stop on Wednesday was to a marching band rehearsal at Liberty County High School, which, according to U.S. News and World Report, has about 1,000 students, a majority of them “economically disadvantaged.”

The room erupted when Harris and Walz walked in, and the band played the school fight song with football players and cheerleaders in the back of the room. Leaning into his experience as a former coach, Walz gave a quick speech about teamwork. Harris told the crowd they were all leaders in their own way.

Next stop: Sandfly Bar-B-Q in Savannah, a restaurant decorated with license plates from various states. Harris and Walz were greeted by the restaurant's owner, employees and local patrons. Walz sought out a group of teachers and praised their “noble” work. He talked about the importance of optimism and insisted, “Our politics can be hopeful.” Outside, a man held a Trump flag.

On Thursday, Harris stopped by Dottie’s Market in Savannah, where she told the owner she plans to announce a tax credit to boost small business creation. “What I’m going to be rolling out next week is basically a tax credit for startups, small business startups,” she said.

Later was a rally at the city's Enmarket Arena, where she outlined her vision to "fight for America’s future" that included Medicaid expansion, focusing on middle- and working-class families and expanding reproductive rights.

Cartogram showing squares for each of the U.S. states, sized according to the number of electoral votes that the state has, and colored by the forecasted winner of the presidential election in that state. Harris is forecasted to win 226 votes, Trump is forecasted to win 219 votes, and 93 votes are toss ups.

Harris’ momentum continues as she ties with Trump in these swing states

It’s part of a broader strategy to reach voters in traditionally republican areas in swing states.

Savannah — like most major cities — votes strongly Democratic. But it is swimming in a sea of red — and that’s where Harris and Walz are campaigning.

“The whole point is to overperform,” said Emory University political scientist Andra Gillespie. “And so you want to overperform not just among your base, but you also want to overperform in places where you have historically been weak.”

That means campaigning far from the Democratic strongholds of Atlanta, Philadelphia and Charlotte, N.C., to narrow the margins in parts of those competitive swing states that have typically voted Republican. In other words, losing by less.

In Georgia, where reliably Republican voters still outnumber reliably Democratic ones, that’s really the only way to have a chance at winning.

“Democrats also want to perform better than they historically have in other parts of the state, so you want to be able to post stronger margins — even if they are losing margins — in other parts of the state,” Gillespie said.

Ariz. Republican Congressman Juan Ciscomani speaks at the opening of a

Donald Trump's big get-out-the-vote strategy in Arizona and Georgia? Donald Trump

Both campaigns put money and time into georgia.

In presidential races, there are two big indicators of how campaigns are feeling about their chances in a state: time and money. Since Harris got into the race, Donald Trump and his allies have spent nearly $33 million on ads in the state, mostly trying to define Harris with pretty negative messaging. Meanwhile Harris and her allies have spent nearly $23 million, mostly on more positive ads introducing her to voters. That’s according to an NPR analysis of data from the tracking firm Ad Impact. People watching TV in Georgia are seeing a ton of campaign ads already.

Today, the Harris campaign launched its first “contrast” ad , hitting Trump and tying him to the unpopular conservative roadmap known as Project 2025 . That will be on heavy rotation in Georgia and other swing states.

The Harris campaign has invested in 24 offices around Georgia, including in more traditionally Republican areas. Since Harris started running for president, White says they’ve brought in 35,000 new volunteers.

This photo shows former President Donald Trump standing at a lectern and speaking into a microphone. A large screen above him says

As Harris inches ahead, the cavalry comes to Trump's aid on the airwaves

As for time: Trump held a rally in Georgia earlier this month — though he spent part of his speech bashing the state’s Republican governor. (Trump has since made a public show of saying they’ve worked things out.) This week’s bus tour is Harris’ second trip to the state in less than a month.

Polling averages show the race remains close — and it’s much closer with Harris at the top of the ticket than when Biden was the presumptive nominee . Biden won by fewer than 12,000 votes. But the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators are proof that a Democrat can win if they run a near-perfect campaign.

The Trump campaign will also be turning up the heat in the state this week in an effort to win it back. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene plans to head to a volunteer phone bank in Rome, Ga. In a release she cites “dozens of paid staff, thousands of volunteers, and field offices in every part of the state, from Atlanta to Savannah to the Valdosta. Team Trump will not leave a stone unturned this fall.”

For Trump, Georgia is a must-win state. For Harris, it would open up additional paths to the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Harris and Walz will take a pitstop in Georgia to do an interview

As Harris and Walz meet voters in person, they are also set to sit down for their first television interview together. CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed them at Kim’s Cafe, a Black-owned restaurant in Savannah, this afternoon. It will air at 9 p.m. EST on CNN.

Supporters carry signs as Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Harris speaks during the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 22 in Chicago.

Harris needs Gen Z. Here's her plan to win them

For the entirety of Harris’ nascent candidacy, she has been in a position to control the message, and she has largely delivered prepared remarks from teleprompter. The interview is, of course, a different format, where she is likely to be pressed on areas where her position has changed since the Democratic primary in 2020, when she supported some version of Medicare for All, opposed fracking and didn’t have as hard of a line on immigration and border security as she does now.

She won’t be alone. Walz will also be part of the interview, which means there likely will be some questions about their relationship and how they would work together — questions that by their nature are not as perilous as trying to explain policy shifts.

The Trump campaign has been publicly badgering Harris to do an interview, in part because they are looking for something to pounce on where they can actually get some traction. They have been trying unsuccessfully for five weeks to end her campaign honeymoon and make some attacks stick, and this interview is the best chance they’ve had in a while.

Already, Trump’s running mate JD Vance is criticizing Harris and Walz for doing a joint appearance rather than having Harris sit for a grilling alone. But it’s not clear how much voters really care about these intricacies.

WATCH: Harris delivers remarks at campaign rally in Savannah on final day of Georgia bus tour

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered remarks at a campaign rally in Savannah on Thursday, the final day of her campaign’s bus tour through Georgia.

Watch the event in the player above.

Harris’ remarks came ahead of a joint interview with her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Thursday night.

The interview with CNN’s Dana Bash will give Harris a chance to quell criticism that she has eschewed uncontrolled environments, while also giving her a fresh platform to define her campaign and test her political mettle ahead of an upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump set for Sept. 10. But it also carries risk as her team tries to build on momentum from the ticket shakeup following Joe Biden’s exit and last week’s Democratic National Convention.

Joint interviews during an election year are a fixture in politics; Biden and Harris, Trump and Mike Pence, Barack Obama and Biden — all did them at a similar point in the race. The difference is those other candidates had all done solo interviews, too. Harris hasn’t yet done an in-depth interview since she became her party’s standard bearer five weeks ago, though she did sit for several while she was still Biden’s running mate.

Harris and Walz are still introducing themselves to voters, unlike Trump and Biden of whom people had near-universal awareness and opinion.

The CNN interview is set to air at 9 p.m. EDT. It is scheduled to be taped at 1:45 p.m. EDT during her two-day bus tour through southeast Georgia that culminates with an evening rally in Savannah. Harris campaign officials believe that in order to win the state over Trump in November, she must make inroads in GOP strongholds across the state.

WATCH: Harris and Walz speak to students in Hinesville during Georgia bus tour stop

Harris, during her time as vice president, has done on-camera and print interviews with The Associated Press and many other outlets, a much more frequent pace than the president — except for Biden’s late-stage media blitz following his disastrous debate performance that touched off the end of his campaign.

Harris’ lack of media access over the past month has become one of Republicans’ key attack lines. The Trump campaign has kept a tally of the days she has gone by as a candidate without giving an interview and have suggested she needs a “babysitter” and that’s why Walz will be there.

“Dana Bash of CNN has a chance at greatness today. If she gave a fair but tough interview of Comrade Kamala Harris, she will expose her as being totally inept and ill suited for the job of President, much as I exposed Crooked Joe Biden during our now famous Debate,” Trump posted online Thursday. “How cool would that be for Dana and CNN???”

Trump has largely steered toward conservative media outlets when granting interviews, though he has held more open press conferences in recent weeks as he sought to reclaim the spotlight that Harris’ elevation had claimed.

After the CNN interview, Walz will peel off and Harris will continue the bus tour alone, heading to a rally before going back to Washington. On Wednesday, they sent time with a high school marching band to the delight of students, and stopped by a Savannah barbecue restaurant.

Harris campaign communications director Michael Tyler said bus tours offer an “opportunity to get to places we don’t usually go (and) make sure we’re competing in all communities.”

The campaign wants the events to motivate voters in GOP-leaning areas who don’t traditionally see the candidates, and hopes that the engagements drive viral moments that cut through crowded media coverage to reach voters across the country.

The stops are meant as moments where voters can learn “not just what they stand for, but who they are as people,” Tyler said.

What to watch on the campaign trail today

  • Vice President Kamala Harris traveled today to Georgia, where the campaign is kicking off a bus tour of the battleground state.
  • Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, spoke at the International Association of Fire Fighters convention in Boston this morning before he joined Harris in Georgia.
  • Former President Donald Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, visited Erie, Pennsylvania, to speak about the economy. In response to a question about an incident that took place at Arlington National Cemetery during Trump's visit Monday, Vance lashed out at Harris over the Biden administration's handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying she can "go to hell."

Gold Star families say there were difficulties getting Trump allowed into the Arlington cemetery

The families of the Abbey Gate victims initially had trouble getting Trump allowed into Arlington National Cemetery with them, according to  a report  published today by the conservative Daily Caller.

Darin Hoover, the father of Marine Staff Sgt. Darin “Taylor” Hoover, told NBC News that he heard through a liaison working with the Gold Star families that there was “a lot of pushback and wrangling” between the Trump staff and the cemetery and that Trump might not be allowed in. Hoover said he heard from the liaison a few days before the commemoration was set to happen that Trump’s attendance had been canceled.

Hoover said he and Kelly Barnett, the late staff sergeant’s mother, called House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul, R-Texas, to help rectify the situation. McCaul’s office later relayed to Hoover that a group of lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., became involved to ensure Trump would be able to attend.

In a statement, McCaul said he was “furious” to hear their request was being “stymied.”

“I immediately asked what I could do to help and reached out to Speaker Johnson to see what he could do,” he said. “Thankfully, Speaker Johnson and his team acted quickly and were able to get the situation resolved.”

A Johnson spokesperson confirmed to NBC News that he intervened in the matter.

The Trump campaign and the cemetery did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cheryl Juels, the aunt of Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee, said in a text message that there was lots of back-and-forth in planning in the days ahead of the commemoration.

"In the end, it worked out and we were honored and humbled at the love and support we were showed, but all the resistance we received and all the changes daily really just made all the planning for everyone involved more difficult," Juels said.

Defendants ask judge to dismiss Arizona ‘fake elector’ case with trial set to begin in 2026

Reporting from Phoenix, Arizona

After three days of arguments and with a trial scheduled for Jan. 5, 2026, the decision of whether Arizona’s “fake electors” case will move forward is now in Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Bruce Cohen’s hands.

Defendants argued Monday and yesterday that the indictment against 11 people who signed documents claiming to be Arizona’s Electoral College electors in 2020 — even though Biden won the state and Arizona certified his victory — and other Trump allies should be dismissed on the grounds that they were exercising their First Amendment rights.

Vance 'not worried' about RFK Jr.'s remaining on battleground ballots

Vance told reporters that he is "not worried at all" about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s remaining on the ballots in Michigan and Wisconsin , two major battleground states. Kennedy endorsed Trump and said he would remove himself from battleground state ballots in an effort to support his candidacy.

While Trump has welcomed the support of Kennedy, who ran in the Democratic primaries, he has had a frostier relationship with his previous running mate, former Vice President Mike Pence. Vance told NBC News that he has not spoken to Pence since he became the nominee for vice president.

RFK Jr. says he sued Trump 'a couple of times' over golf courses

Katherine Koretski

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a new interview that he has previously sued Trump while adding that they have always maintained a good relationship.

"I’ve sued him a couple of times on golf courses that he was building or he was trying to build up in the New York state reservoir watershed, and I was suing to keep them from being built," Kennedy said in an interview with “Dr. Phil” McGraw that was taped shortly after he endorsed Trump on Friday and aired tonight.

"But even during that time when I was litigating against him, he ended up giving me a ride to Florida on his plane, and we were friendly," Kennedy added.

Kennedy also said that he disagrees with Trump on many items and would not back him on certain issues.

"I had the same kind of orientation towards abhorrence for, I’d say, President Trump, as many Democrats maybe, you know, four years ago, mainly because of his environmental stances, which I continue to disagree with," Kennedy said. He did not provide examples of issues today on which he diverges from Trump.

Project 2025 condemned by bilingual campaign aimed at Latino voters

Nicole Acevedo

Seven advocacy organizations that have been working to engage Latino voters ahead of the presidential election found that many of them are familiar with Project 2025 but that few understood the specifics behind the  900-plus-page conservative policy plan  and its potential impact if implemented.

The groups, most of which are left-leaning or progressive, are coming together under a new coalition to launch a bilingual campaign condemning Project 2025 and its stances on specific issues that are important to Latino voters — such as education, health care access, reproductive rights, climate change and immigration, as well as jobs and workers’ rights.

The “Defendiendo Nuestro Futuro, Latinos Against Project 2025” campaign aims to target millions of Latino voters in swing states through door-to-door canvassing efforts, phone-banking and social media.

Voters in Savannah have mixed views on Harris' scheduled visit tomorrow

Nnamdi Egwuonwu

Zoë Richards

Voters in Savannah, Georgia, have contrasting views about Harris’ rally in the city tomorrow.

Tahisha Wright, 42, expressed optimism about the visit, telling NBC News that Harris brings “a new sense of hope, inspiration and enthusiasm about what’s to come as it relates to being an American and making sure that we have policies that are inclusive to all people, not just a few."

"We’re very excited about Vice President Kamala Harris coming to town," Wright said. "It gives us an opportunity here in Savannah to hear personally from her about her various policies that may impact us right here in Savannah."

Wright said that as an educator, she would like to "hear what are some policies as it relates to education and how that’s going to impact our future as far as our children."

Another voter, Sam A., 29, said Harris is the "best candidate" but had no plans to see Harris during her stop in the city tomorrow.

"I don’t really feel any which way about it," they said, adding that there is "still a lot of work to be done, so I’m not going to put her on a pedestal and take time out of my day to come and visit her."

Sam A. criticized Harris over the Israel-Hamas war, suggesting she has been "very vague" on the conflict and that "the action that she’s been putting forth as vice president right now hasn’t really been much of anything."

Police said they would release more information in the morning. The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vance defends his comments about teachers union president who he said 'ought to have her own' children

Vance appeared to double down on his 2021 criticism of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, in which he said that "if she wants to brainwash and destroy the minds of children, she should have some of her own and leave ours the hell alone."

Vance said he was not reiterating those sentiments to reporters today, saying, "I just said if she wants to brainwash anybody’s kids, she ought to have her own and leave mine alone."

He also pushed back against reports of an “incident” between two members of Trump’s campaign team and an official at Arlington National Cemetery, telling reporters there has been outsized focus on the story.

Trump’s campaign is playing down  reports of an altercation  during his visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, a move that signals its concern about potential political fallout from the incident.

“A nameless bureaucrat at Arlington whose job it is to preserve the dignity of the cemetery is doing the complete opposite in trying to make what was a very solemn and respectful event into something it was not,” said Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita, a retired Marine who was with Trump on Monday at the cemetery in the Virginia suburbs of Washington.

Trump has long portrayed himself as a champion of service members and veterans — an image bolstered by participants in Monday’s ceremony. But he has also created a pattern of disparaging service members that has led even some former aides to question the authenticity of his support for the military.

‘Swifties for Kamala’ joins forces with Carole King and Elizabeth Warren to raise $142,000

Some members of Taylor Swift’s massive fan base are organizing and taking action for their preferred presidential candidate — even without the pop star’s public support.

“Swifties for Kamala,” which has no official affiliation with Swift or Harris, had raised $142,000 for Harris as of this afternoon, said Irene Kim, a co-founder of the organization and its executive director.

Most of it — $122,000 — was collected during a Zoom event the group hosted yesterday. About 34,000 people joined the roughly two-hour call, which featured appearances from singer-songwriter Carole King and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts, Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York, and Ed Markey, of Massachusetts; and Reps. Chris Deluzio, of Pennsylvania, and Becca Balint, of Vermont.

Exclusive: 'Moms Oppose McCormick' launched in Pennsylvania

Emma Barnett

More than 140 mothers across Pennsylvania are launching a “Moms Oppose McCormick” coalition, including health care workers, community leaders and educators, in support of Democratic Sen. Bob Casey's re-election campaign against businessman David McCormick.

Democratic Reps. Madeleine Dean, Mary Gay Scanlon and Chrissy Houlahan are chairing the coalition.

“Senator Casey has a record of fighting to make a difference for women and families across Pennsylvania,” Casey's campaign said in a news release, crediting Casey’s work on a variety of topics, including abortion rights and paid family leave.

Citing the issue of abortion, Dean said in a statement that "McCormick has shown time and again that he does not stand with Pennsylvania women, girls, mothers and families."

McCormick h a s sa id that life begins at conception and that he supports exceptions to restrictions on abortion for rape, incest and the life of the woman. He has said more recently that abortion is a "polarizing" issue and that he would like to "find common ground" rather than take an extreme position, adding that he does not support a national abortion ban and reiterating his support for exceptions to restrictions.

In response to a request for comment, McCormick's campaign tried to tie Casey to both Harris and Biden.

“Weak, liberal career politician Bob Casey is trying to distract from the fact that Pennsylvania families are being crushed by the high cost of living because the liberal Biden-Harris-Casey agenda has failed them," McCormick press secretary Nate Sizemore said in a statement. "Commonwealth parents are desperate for strong leadership in Washington, and that’s why in addition to curbing inflation Dave has put forward a comprehensive pro-family agenda to make fertility services like IVF more affordable, expand access to contraceptives, and lower childcare costs."

Randi Weingarten says an educator 'doesn't have to be a parent to be a great teacher'

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said today that being a parent isn't a requirement for being a good teacher.

“Teaching children is one of the most important things we can do, regardless of whether we are parents or not,” Weingarten said in an MSNBC interview, adding that an educator "doesn't have to be a parent to be a great teacher."

Remarks that resurfaced yesterday showed Vance harshly criticizing Weingarten in 2021 for not having "some of her own" kids.

Weingarten also noted during today's interview that her partner, Sharon Kleinbaum, has two kids.

“I consider them my kids now, and it’s wonderful to have a big family, with lots of nieces and nephews,” she said.

Weingarten, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention last week after her union endorsed Harris last month, also praised the Democratic ticket.

"You know, teachers get dissed a lot. So when you see a Tim Walz and when you see a Kamala Harris picking him, it says, a lot about opportunity," she said. "And it says a lot to teachers — about who we are and what we represent."

FBI: Trump shooter searched for info on Republican, Democratic conventions

Ryan J. Reilly

Reporting from Washington

The man who tried to assassinate Trump last month had searched for information on both the Republican and Democratic national Conventions before he opened fire at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, FBI officials told reporters today, suggesting that the Trump event was a “target of opportunity.”

FBI officials also said they had found no indication or evidence that any co-conspirators worked with Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, who tried to kill Trump just days before he accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the party’s convention.

“I want to be clear: We have not seen any indication to suggest Crooks was directed by a foreign entity to conduct the attack,” FBI Assistant Director Bobby Wells told reporters.

As 21 columns of fire shot out of the stage, Trump walked out in front of a booming crowd in Phoenix last week to introduce the exiled scion of Democratic royalty he hoped would, once again, reset the campaign.

“Had he been allowed to enter the Democratic primary, he would have easily beaten Joe Biden,” Trump told a huge crowd about Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who stood onstage prepared to endorse him over the objection of his own family. “But they would not let him.”

Kennedy’s  support for Trump  comes after weeks of momentum by Harris. Biden’s exit from the race gave her a polling boost, which  even Trump’s team  expects to continue after last week’s widely watched Democratic National Convention.

Vance says Harris 'can go to hell' while discussing 2021 deaths of U.S. service members at Abbey Gate

bus tours vietnam

Rebecca Shabad

Vance told reporters during a question-and-answer part of a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, that Harris can "go to hell," condemning her and the Biden administration over the attack at Abbey Gate in Afghanistan in 2021, in which 13 U.S. service members died.

Vance was answering a reporter's question about an " incident " at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, when Trump visited Section 60 with relatives of those service members.

"Three years ago, 13 brave, innocent Americans died, and they died because Kamala Harris refused to do her job, and there hasn't been a single investigation or a single firing," Vance said. "Sometimes mistakes happen. That's just the nature of government, the nature of military service, but to have those 13 Americans lose their lives and not fire a single person is disgraceful. Kamala Harris is disgraceful."

Vance said that if they're going to discuss a story related to Abbey Gate, "it's that Kamala Harris is so asleep at the wheel that she won't even do an investigation into what happened, and she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up. She can — she can go to hell."

The  Supreme Court  today rebuffed a Biden administration plea seeking to revive the latest plan to tackle federal student loan debt.

The court in a brief order denied an emergency request the administration filed seeking to lift a nationwide injunction imposed by an appeals court. No dissents were noted.

The Education Department issued a regulation finalizing its Saving on a Valuable Education, or SAVE, plan in July 2023, the month after the  Supreme Court ruled  the administration lacked authority to implement Biden’s earlier loan forgiveness program.

The video, titled “I’m Not With Her” and shared first with NBC News, includes more than a dozen Black women, several from battleground states, expressing their opposition to Harris, with some framing her as being out of touch with Black voters.

“I and millions of others Black Americans will cast my vote for Donald J. Trump,” Bebe Diamond of New York City said in the video.

An unnamed woman from Kalamazoo County, Michigan, featured in the video said she supports Trump because of the “economic policies our country experienced under his leadership as our 45th president.”

The video is one of the Trump campaign’s most direct efforts yet to win over Black women, a group that traditionally overwhelmingly supports Democratic candidates. In the 2020 election, 90% of Black women supported Biden,  according to exit polls .

Trump Media stock falls below $20 for first time

Kevin Breuninger, CNBC

The monthslong  Trump Media  stock slide continued today as shares of the company majority-owned by Trump  fell below $20 for the first time since the  Truth Social  parent started trading under the ticker symbol DJT in March.

As of early afternoon, the stock had dropped around 75% from its intraday high on March 26, when the company debuted on the  Nasdaq  stock exchange.

Trump Media has also lost more than half its value since its surge on July 15, the first trading day after Trump survived an  assassination attempt  at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump owns nearly 59% of Trump Media’s stock. Even after it lost much of its value, Trump’s stake at today’s stock price is still worth more than $2.2 billion — more than half of his on-paper  net worth , according to Forbes. He is allowed to start selling shares in the latter half of September.

Trump claims he would win California 'if Jesus came down and was the voter counter'

In an hourlong interview with "Dr. Phil" McGraw that aired last night, Trump claimed that he would win California, a Democratic stronghold that he lost by more than 5 million votes, or nearly 2-to-1, in the 2020 election, if there was “an honest vote count.”

During the interview, Trump cast doubt on the legitimacy of mail-in ballots, calling them “terrible,” and baselessly claiming that they invite widespread voter fraud.

Trump cited the crowds at his rallies in California, which he described as “so big” that “there’s no way I could lose” the state.

“If Jesus came down and was the vote counter, I would win California,” he said, adding, “If we had an honest vote counter, I would win California.”

Trump made a similar claim at a California Republican Party meeting last year, telling the crowd that he would win the state if it weren’t for “the rigged election system.”

“We would win this state in a real election. ... We’d win this state by a lot,” Trump said then.

Trump, who faces criminal charges over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, has repeated without evidence that Democrats are perpetrating widespread voter fraud in elections.

Trump, without evidence, faults Biden and Harris over Secret Service protection

Trump claimed without evidence in an interview with talk show host "Dr. Phil" McGraw that Biden and Harris made it difficult for him to have adequate Secret Service protection at his campaign rallies.

In the interview, which was taped Friday and aired last night, he implied Biden and Harris may partly be to blame for the assassination attempt on him in July.

"He always made it very tough for us to have the proper number of Secret Service people. And I don’t know whose fault it is, but I will tell you, I’d have these massive rallies with 50-60,000 people, more, and our people were always fighting to get more security, more Secret Service, and he knew that we didn’t have enough, and he’d have a rally of three or four people," Trump said about Biden.

Trump added: "And yet he had a massive contingent of Secret Service, and I know that they wanted to have his people come over to these big rallies that I was having, and I know that it was a very tough situation. When this happened, people would ask, whose fault is it? I, to a certain extent, it’s Biden’s fault and Harris’ fault, and I’m the opponent."

There's no evidence Biden or Harris stood in the way of Trump’s receiving sufficient Secret Service protection at his campaign rallies.

Preliminary investigations have determined that the Secret Service had a number of failures in preventing the shooting.

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vance opens up on running with Trump: ‘We’re each trying to talk to different people in different ways’

A week ago,  the rift  between Trump and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp looked beyond repair, as Trump relentlessly ridiculed a popular battleground state Republican posing a potential mortal threat to his campaign.

Then Vance got Kemp on the line.

Within hours of their phone call last week, Kemp, who along with his wife had been the target of  vicious Trump attacks , was  on Fox News  publicly declaring his support for the GOP ticket. Soon after that, Trump was  thanking Kemp  for the kind words.

Vance, in an interview aboard his campaign plane Tuesday night, downplayed any role he might have had in brokering a truce, wagering that his was one of many important voices in Kemp’s ear. But he also described a strategy, blessed by Trump, that takes advantage of the idea that he can reason with or appeal to people in ways Trump cannot.

“A lot of similarities, but also a lot of differences, too,” Vance said, describing the dynamic between him and Trump.

Walz denounces Trump on overtime benefits, minimum wage stance

In remarks at the International Association of Fire Fighters convention this morning, Walz criticized Trump's record as president by arguing that some of his policy positions didn't help workers.

"When Donald Trump was president, he blocked overtime benefits for millions of workers, he opposed efforts to raise the minimum wage, and he even proposed slashing budgets for federal fire service programs. Those are just simply facts. But look, it's not just what they've done, it's what they're going to do," Walz said in his speech in Boston.

The Trump administration in 2019 expanded overtime pay to more than 1 million workers, fewer than the number that would have been affected by an Obama administration plan that had been struck down in court, The Associated Press reported. In 2020, when Trump ran for re-election, he said at a debate against Biden that increasing the minimum wage would hurt small businesses and that states should decide the issue.

Walz said that Trump and Vance's goal is to enact proposals from Project 2025, "to screw the middle-class, making it harder for workers to collectively bargain, allowing employers to drastically cut overtime or eliminate it, slash taxes for the ultrawealthy by imposing a national sales tax on the rest of us."

"I'm an old-time football coach," he said, referring to his days as a high school football coach when he taught social studies. "If you draw up a playbook, you plan on using it. Project 2025 is a plan to reshape what America looks like, moving away from the middle class and putting it right back on the oligarchs and the wealthy at the top."

Democrats hopeful Harris can reignite the magic of Obama’s 2008 run

Natasha Korecki

CHICAGO — Hang out long enough at a Democratic event these days and someone will say it: “It feels like 2008.”

The packed arenas, the  bonkers fundraising ,  early reports  of voter registration spikes, the hundreds of thousands of new volunteers who’ve stepped forward — and all of it in just the five weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris moved to the top of the ticket — have had Democrats betting they’ve captured the magic of 2008. It was a transformative year in Democratic politics, setting Barack Obama on a path to become the first Black president. He  won decisively , taking 365 electoral votes.

In interviews with party officials, volunteers and campaign officials, common themes emerged that they say make today reminiscent of 2008. Phone calls are streaming into their offices with voters proactively wanting to help, many from people who haven’t volunteered before. Younger voters are engaging. Small-dollar donations are pouring in, a third of which in the last week were from first-time donors. And large-dollar donors who hadn’t given to the party in years are getting off the sidelines.

RFK Jr.'s sister Kerry Kennedy campaigns for Harris

Raquel Coronell Uribe

Kerry Kennedy will join Latino Labor leaders — including Dolores Huerta, who co-founded United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s — today in Phoenix to campaign for Harris.

Latino voters are a key voting bloc for delivering battleground states such as Arizona and Nevada this election.

Kennedy has been outspoken about her brother Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s decision to endorse Trump last week. She released a statement signed with four other of her and RFK Jr.'s siblings denouncing Kennedy's endorsement of Trump and calling it a "betrayal" of their family's values.

RFK Jr. gets name off Nevada ballot despite issues in other swing states

Ben Kamisar

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. got some good news in Nevada, where a court ruling will allow his name to be taken off the ballot there this fall after he dropped out and endorsed Trump.

The ruling came as part of a lawsuit Kennedy filed while he was still an active candidate attempting to secure a spot on the ballot. But the court order shows the two sides had agreed to drop the case, agreeing that Kennedy shouldn't be on the ballot.

Kennedy said when he dropped out last week that he wanted to remove his name from swing state ballots where he risked being a "spoiler." But state laws in Michigan and Wisconsin have prevented him from doing so there.

Trump shares statement from Abbey Gate victims' family members following 'incident' at Arlington National Cemetery

Trump shared a statement on his Truth Social account from family members of the American service members who were killed at Abbey Gate in 2021, which came after reports of an "incident" at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday.

"We had given our approval for President Trump's official videographer and photographer to attend the event, ensuring these sacred moments of remembrance were respectfully captured and we can cherish these memories forever," the family members said in the statement posted by Trump.

NPR reported yesterday that two Trump campaign aides had a confrontation Monday with a cemetery official who tried to prevent them from filming. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung denied part of the story, including that there was “no physical altercation.”

Arlington National Cemetery confirmed to NBC News that an "incident took place when Trump visited the site at Section 60 to mark the third anniversary of the Abbey Gate attack in Afghanistan.

The cemetery said in a statement that federal law bans political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries. It said that includes “photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign."

Filming at Section 60 is typically heavily restricted.

Harris and Walz to target a 'diverse coalition of voters' in southeastern Georgia

Tara Prindiville

Harris and Walz today are set to begin their first joint visit to Georgia with a bus tour through the southeastern part of the battleground state, which represents “a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large proportion of Black voters and working class families,” Porsha White, Georgia state director at the Harris campaign, said in a memo.

White said there has been a “surge in momentum and grassroots energy on the ground” in Georgia, since Harris announced her campaign last month, including 190 campaign staffers across 24 offices and more than 35,000 volunteers.

Harris’ visit to southeast Georgia will be her 16th visit to the state since she took office as vice present and her seventh to the state this year, including twice in June, White said.

Biden narrowly won Georgia in the 2020 election “for the first time in nearly three decades, and we’re seizing on the energy and putting in the work to win again in 2024,” White said.

New video shows Nancy Pelosi calling Trump a ‘domestic enemy’ shortly after Jan. 6 attack

Hours after a mob of  Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and assaulted dozens of police officers in an attempt to reach members of Congress, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., referred to the then-president as “a domestic enemy.”

The comments came in video shot by documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, Pelosi’s daughter, that HBO recently turned over  to Congress . NBC News yesterday reviewed more than 30 minutes of video from the roughly 48 hours surrounding the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, including video that showed Pelosi being led away from the building by her security detail as she pressed her staff members to get the National Guard to respond to the Capitol.

The newly surfaced remarks go further than  the public ones  she made Jan. 7, when she said Trump had “incited an armed insurrection against America” and “instigated” an attack that would “forever stain our nation’s history.”

Harris gives Democrats new hope in the ultracompetitive state of Georgia

Alex Seitz-Wald

Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, who won Georgia in the 2020 election and again in 2022, has directly told Kamala Harris he’s “all in” on helping her defeat Donald Trump this fall.

But he warns it will be difficult.

“We built an architecture to win,” Warnock told a small group of reporters in Chicago during the Democratic convention last week. “I think we can put Georgia in the Harris-Walz column. I’m not going to pretend that that will be an easy thing to do. But can we do it? I absolutely believe that we can.”

Georgia will be front and center this week as Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, begin a bus tour together in the state today, which is scheduled to end in the Savannah area with a solo Harris rally tomorrow. The same day, Harris and Walz are set to do a joint TV interview, Harris’ first since she became her party’s nominee.

Joe Biden won Georgia by fewer than 12,000 votes over Trump in 2020, becoming the first Democrat to carry the longtime GOP stronghold in nearly three decades. Now it’s up to Harris to prove whether that was a fluke or whether Democrats can keep it in the blue column at the highest level.

Harris campaign launches paid media campaign slamming Trump and Project 2025

The Harris campaign is launching an extensive ad campaign in battleground states focusing on Trump and Project 2025 in the lead-up to the Sept. 10 debate with ABC News.

The ads are both for digital and TV, and will air every day in every market across the country beginning today, according to the campaign.

It's not clear exactly how much money is being put forth for the ads. Harris' team did not provide a number but said that it would be an "eight figure investment in national TV placements," drawn from $370 million the campaign set aside for paid media between Labor Day and Election Day.

The Harris campaign said the theme of the ad campaign, "Control," would focus on Trump’s own words to tell battleground voters about what it called "the existential danger Trump’s Project 2025 agenda poses to American democracy, freedom, and the middle class."

The former president has sought to distance himself from Project 2025, a proposed blueprint by the Heritage Foundation for another Trump term, despite the involvement of his alli e s in the proposal.

First to NBC News: Pennsylvania Democrats launch program to give voters personalized election information

Shaquille Brewster

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania Democrats are launching a digital program designed to direct voters to personalized information on candidates who will appear down their ballot in the battleground state this fall.

The goal is twofold: get the word out about the state’s Democratic candidates and give the state party access to valuable data.

When organizers and volunteers hand out flyers about the upcoming election, there will now be a QR code that brings voters to the Pennsylvania Democrats’ website .  Once a voter scans the QR code, they will be directed to enter their name and address, which will provide them with information on which candidates they have the opportunity to vote for, as well as on polling locations and mail voting instructions. Each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties and state House districts have distinct literature to promote candidates who will appear on the ballot.

“When a voter used that QR code and accessed our website and got their information, we also tagged them in our vote builder database, so we knew that we had an interested voter that we could follow up with,” Mitch Kates, executive director of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, told NBC News.

This will be the first presidential election cycle the state party will be using the “Vote Local PA” program, narrowing the focus down to the state House district level with nearly 400 distinct pieces of literature across Pennsylvania.

“The path to the White House runs through Pennsylvania, and Democrats are meeting voters where they are — at the doors, on the phones, and in their communities — to share our party’s commitment to fight for the people, to lower costs, and to protect our freedoms,” the Democratic National Committee's acting co-executive director, Roger Lau, said in a statement.

“The DNC is investing more than ever before in state parties, supporting the largest-ever coordinated campaign on the ground in PA and backing innovative initiatives like Vote Local PA to reach every voter ahead of Election Day," he continued. "We know this election will be won in the states, and over the next 70 days, Democrats will engage voters in all 67 Pennsylvania counties with a targeted, tailored message on how we’ll deliver for them and their families this November.”

Arlington National Cemetery officials confirm an ‘incident’ during Trump’s visit

Arlington National Cemetery yesterday confirmed an incident took place when Trump visited there Monday to commemorate the third anniversary of the  Abbey Gate attack  in Afghanistan.

“We can confirm there was an incident, and a report was filed,” the statement read.

“Federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries, to include photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign,” said the cemetery in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. “Arlington National Cemetery reinforced and widely shared this law and its prohibitions with all participants.”

Trump participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Monday, marking the third anniversary of the deaths of 13 U.S. service members in an attack by the Islamic State terrorist group outside the Kabul international airport in Afghanistan.  More than 150 Afghans  were also killed. Parents of fallen service members have  expressed anger  at President Joe Biden’s administration for a lack of answers surrounding the attack.

After the ceremony, Trump headed to Section 60 of the cemetery, where some service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq are buried and recording is typically heavily restricted.

Where's Vance?

Trump’s running mate will hit battleground states in the Great Lakes region today, heading to Erie, Pennsylvania, in the early afternoon and the Green Bay, Wisconsin, area in the evening.

At both events, Vance is expected to deliver remarks on the economy, inflation and energy.

Walz vies for union vote in Boston

Walz will deliver remarks at the International Association of Fire Fighters convention in Boston as the Harris-Walz ticket vies for the union vote and markets the Minnesota governor as a labor champion.

“Governor Walz, a former union member himself, has a strong record of standing up for unions and delivering for workers — from joining the picket line and passing the most pro-worker package of laws in Minnesota history, to guaranteeing Minnesota workers paid sick, medical, and family leave,” a Harris-Walz campaign statement said.

The association is one of the largest labor unions, with 350,000 firefighters, rescue workers and emergency medical workers as members.

Harris heads to battleground Georgia

Harris is scheduled to depart Washington this afternoon for Savannah, Georgia.

The vice president will be holding a series of campaign events in the battleground state, which was closely contested in the 2020 election and ultimately went to a Democrat, Joe Biden, for the first time in nearly three decades.

The Harris-Walz ticket is hoping to continue that momentum as it leads a bus tour across Georgia and sits down for its first joint interview Thursday.

Free bus travel as T3 undergoes major Metro upgrade works

Published: 29 August 2024

Released by: Minister for Transport

After the successful opening of the Sydney Metro City line, the Minns Labor Government is today announcing the closure of the T3 Bankstown line for metro upgrade works will begin on Monday 30 September 2024.

When the conversion is complete, passengers will have access to a 21st century high-tech metro line with a train every 4 minutes during the peak, along with fully accessible stations and services.

The NSW Government is also announcing the travel on replacement bus services, known as Southwest Link, will be free for all passengers.

We are also acknowledging that the conversion period will be difficult and disruptive for many passengers, and we thank the community for their patience as we work as quickly as possible to covert the line to a transformative metro.

Fare free travel on Southwest Link buses will begin on day one and continue for the entire conversion period, until the estimated completion date of late 2025.

The program of works to transform the 130-year-old line, between Sydenham and Bankstown, for modern metro trains is a complex and difficult task, meaning it could take longer than 12 months to complete.

Major work includes:

  • Installing platform screen doors at all stations between Marrickville and Bankstown
  • Installing the remaining 81 (of 170) gap filler between platforms and trains across eight stations
  • Refurbishing station buildings and platform surfaces
  • Installing new security barriers at 81 locations along the alignment
  • Removing and replacing fencing
  • Final platform works including installation of signage
  • Final adjustments to overhead wiring and tracks to metro standards
  • Station services and systems installations such as help points, CCTV cameras and passenger information displays
  • Public domain finishes including landscaping, footpath rectification works, bike parking and new lighting
  • Heavy vehicle management bollard installation for station security at station entrances
  • Finishing works at stations including painting and repairs to refresh stations
  • Rigorous testing and commissioning of the metro trains and station equipment.

Southwest Link is a key part of the interim transport plan to help the tens of thousands of impacted commuters move around during this disruptive time.

All bus driver positions have been filled to support the 100 buses that will run from early in the morning to late at night seven days a week. The timetable aims for a service every 2-4 minutes in the peak.

Fare free travel will apply on the three dedicated bus routes known as SW1 (all stops), SW2 (limited stops) and SW3 (limited stops), which passengers will be able to catch from their local station:

  • SW1 – Sydenham, Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Hurlstone Park, Canterbury, Campsie, Belmore, Lakemba, Wiley Park, Punchbowl, Bankstown.
  • SW2 – Sydenham, Belmore, Lakemba, Wiley Park, Punchbowl, Bankstown.
  • SW3 – Sydenham, Canterbury, Campsie.

The T6 train line will also become available at the same time as Southwest Link, to support passengers during the conversion. However, preparatory works will begin on 21 September, meaning part of the line between Campsie and Bankstown will be shut from then. The T6 will connect Bankstown to Lidcombe Station via Yagoona, Birrong, Regents Park and Berala. Once complete, this final section of the metro line will eventually be known as the M1 Northwest & Bankstown Line, completing the 30km alignment between Bankstown and Tallawong. Quotes attributable to Transport Minister Jo Haylen:

“We absolutely acknowledge this is going to be disruptive time for the people of Canterbury Bankstown and for the Inner West but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

“When this section of the metro is complete, they will get a train every four minutes. That’s a massive increase in train services, because right now there are stations on the T3 Line that only receive four trains an hour in the peak.

“The fair thing to do is not charge a fare on our dedicated Southwest Link bus services because this will be a really tough time for passengers in Canterbury Bankstown and the Inner West.” Quotes attributable to Transport for NSW Coordinator-General Howard Collins:

“Our pink Southwest Link buses will be easily recognisable services with plenty of signage and our ‘pink shirts’ will be on the ground to help people get on the right, fare-free service.

“We expect the free Southwest Link services will be in high demand, while our bus marshals will work very hard to assist with a smooth service, we do anticipate there will be some delays and longer wait times.

“Metro needs to install mechanical gap filler, improve and heighten pedestrian fences around 15 bridges, install platform screen doors and security fencing along the entire line, and then test and commission a new railway, all on an existing corridor that’s 130 years old.”

Quotes attributable to Metro Southwest Project Director Alia Karaman: “The disruption on the Bankstown line is going to be really hard, but when the work is complete, south west Sydney will be connected to the CBD like never before.

“What we’re seeing now with Metro from Sydenham is 5 minute journeys into Central Station and a train every 4 minutes. With the Metro conversion, those benefits will be shared along the line to Bankstown.

“A train every 4 minutes in the peak so you’re not waiting on the platform, fast travel times so you get where you want to go sooner and safe, gap-free boarding. That’s what passengers have to look forward to when this challenging and disruptive work is complete.”

Harris is on a 2-day Georgia bus tour. It’s the latest sign the state is in play

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, disembark from their campaign bus in Savannah, Ga., on Wednesday, as they travel across Georgia on a 2-day campaign bus tour.

Updated August 29, 2024 at 19:36 PM ET

Vice President Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, are back on their campaign bus. The pair are together on the campaign trail for the first time since last week’s Democratic convention. This time, they’re on a two-day bus tour of Georgia.

Their trip is taking them into areas of the state that don’t always get attention from Democratic politicians. It will also be the site of Harris’ first major network interview since becoming her party’s nominee for president, on Thursday.

The attention this week is just the latest sign that Georgia, a state President Biden narrowly won in 2020, is once again in play this election year.

Vice President Harris and Gov. Tim Walz visit Sandfly Bar-B-Q restaurant in Savannah, Ga., on Wednesday.

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris visits Dottie's Market in Savannah, Ga., on August 29, during the second day of a campaign bus tour.

It’s part of a broader strategy to reach voters in traditionally Republican areas in swing states

Both campaigns put money and time into Georgia

In presidential races, there are two big indicators of how campaigns are feeling about their chances in a state: time and money. Since Harris got into the race, Donald Trump and his allies have spent nearly $33 million on ads in the state, mostly trying to define Harris with pretty negative messaging. Meanwhile Harris and her allies have spent nearly $23 million, mostly on more positive ads introducing her to voters. That’s according to an NPR analysis of data from the tracking firm Ad Impact. People watching TV in Georgia are seeing a ton of campaign ads already.

Vice President Kamala Harris during a campaign event in Savannah, Ga., on Thursday.

EST on CNN.

Harris and Walz Point Their Campaign Bus to Rural Georgia

The Democrats’ presidential ticket will head to the Sun Belt, aiming to sway voters in more conservative areas to their side.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, seeking to build Democrats’ momentum in the Sun Belt, will campaign on Wednesday in the rural counties of southeast Georgia before holding a rally on Thursday in Savannah.

Democrats outside the party’s Metro Atlanta engine have long complained that focusing on the capital city, where a majority of Democratic voters in the state live, ignores pockets of supporters in less populous areas. Organizers have emphasized the particular need to engage voters in rural South Georgia and the state’s mountainous northern regions — both heavily conservative parts of the state that will still require high turnout from Black and moderate white voters to keep Democrats competitive.

A visit from the presidential ticket, some rural Democrats say, shows that top party leaders heeded their calls.

“A little does a lot in rural areas,” said Melissa Clink, the former chair of the Democratic Party in Forsyth County, north of the Atlanta suburbs. “If we can get some face time with, especially, the top of the ticket, then not only does that help donors open up their wallets to fund get-out-the-vote operations on the ground but it also inspires more people to do more work because they feel seen.”

The Georgia bus tour is similar to a campaign trip that Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz took to a conservative-leaning county outside Pittsburgh this month. Like South Georgia, Democrats in western Pennsylvania have also said their voters were being unwisely ignored by presidential campaigns. On their tour, Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz made sure to highlight the diversity of the area, engaging with residents in Aliquippa, a former steel town that has a large Black population, where they spent time with a high school football team alongside the former Pittsburgh Steelers star Jerome Bettis. (Mr. Walz is a former high school football coach, which might also play well in Georgia.)

More broadly, Democrats hope Mr. Walz — who flipped a largely rural and more conservative House district in southern Minnesota in 2006 — can help stem their losses with rural and white working-class voters, especially men, who have grown increasingly hostile to their party. He has worked to present a more caring version of masculinity that contrasts with the brash aggressiveness of Mr. Trump.

His party knows it cannot hope to win those rural voters outright. But in what is expected to be a tight election, Democrats are aiming to keep their margins manageable outside the cities and suburbs, something Joseph R. Biden Jr. accomplished during his 2020 campaign. Ms. Harris has made few gains with white men since taking over the ticket.

The Harris campaign says it has invested heavily in rural Georgia, hiring nearly 50 staff members across seven offices, in places including the small cities of Valdosta and Albany close to the Florida line and rural towns like Millen and Cordele, which calls itself the watermelon capital of the world .

Polling shows that Ms. Harris has made Georgia competitive , after it seemed to be slipping out of reach for Mr. Biden. And Mr. Trump has devoted a significant chunk of his advertising budget to the state, suggesting his team also sees the state as being back in play.

In Savannah, where Ms. Harris will hold a rally on Thursday, Democrats are hoping her visit will reignite energy in a city that is home to the second-largest cluster of blue votes in the state.

“Love is an action word — you show people first by your presence,” said Van Johnson, the mayor of Savannah, who has lobbied the Biden and Harris campaigns to campaign in the city for months since Ms. Harris visited in February. “Her presence is going to really be indicative of that esteem she has for our community.”

Vietnam Bus Travel Guide: All You Need To Know

Traveling by bus is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get around Vietnam . However, it can feel quite intimidating and confusing, and it’s a pain if you’re taking long bus rides .

If you’re planning to visit Vietnam and want to travel by bus, read this Vietnam bus travel guide for some tips that you should know.1

Where to buy bus tickets?

You can buy bus tickets online or at your hotel, bus station, or with a travel agent. I find it’s best to buy online as it’s more convenient and get the best prices.

Please note that during weekends or holidays in Vietnam, such as Tet Holiday , you should book in advance to guarantee that you’ll have your seats.

I usually book my bus tickets online with 12go , a trusted transportation company.

Why you should book online

  • Diverse, competitive fare. It’s easy to compare ticket prices without worrying about getting overcharged with “tourist prices.”
  • Find a flexible departure time. With many departures, you can actively arrange your time and easily choose the right trip.
  • Book your trip easily with confirmation procedures and highly secure and safe payment. You can book any time of the day—no need to stay up late to get tickets.

Tips for booking bus tickets online

  • Check the correct name of the location. Vietnamese names can be confusing, and you don’t want to book your trip wrong.
  • Check the drop-on drop-off points. Although many providers offer to pick up or drop off at your hotels, some don’t. Knowing this information helps you arrange your trip better.
  • Each website can have different bus company availability, so check all of them if you need to.

2. At your hotel or travel agency

Another option that you can do is to book with a travel agency.

However, it’s challenging to find a legit travel agency because there’re many fake and copycat ones, so you may end up traveling on a bad-condition bus.

3. Bus stations

Bus stations usually offer reasonable prices for tickets, but they are usually located inconveniently outside the city center. Also, there’re lots of brokers that may harass and trick you into buying a higher price.

If you get to the bus station, make sure to go straight to the ticket office.

There are four types of buses in Vietnam: seated buses, sleeper buses, minivans, and public buses.

1. Seated bus

Seated buses are usually for long-distance trips.

The large ones can carry 30 to 45 passengers, while minibusses can have a capacity of between 15 to 30 passengers.

Most seated buses offer air-conditioners, water, and cold towels.

You will see most of them with routes such as Hanoi to Cat Ba or vice versa.

2. Sleeper bus (night bus)

Recently, sleepers buses have become a popular choice for travelers for long-distance travel as it’s more comfortable than seated buses.

If you travel at night, I highly recommend sleeper buses.

Most sleeper bus has three rows with two floors with seats that can be raised or lowered with a button. They also have bottled water, refreshing towels, and air conditioning.

Some deluxe types have private cabins with curtains, pillows, soft leather seats, blankets, and wifi.

3. Minivans

Minivans, or limousines, generally cover short-distance travel. My most common trips with limousines take 2 to 4 hours, such as traveling from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau .

The most common minivans in Vietnam are Ford Transit and Hyundai Solati, with the interiors refurbished to accommodate seven passengers, nine passengers, or 12 passengers, depending on the model.

Also, the passenger seats are equipped with utilities such as soft leather seats that can recline for relaxation, reading lights, audio equipment, charging ports, entertainment, and ceiling light effects.

It’s usually quite pleasant to travel with minivans. They pick up and drop off at your hotel, and it’s faster than traveling by big bus.

However, some minivan drivers drive fast and carelessly, which can be a problem.

4. Public buses

Public buses run during the daytime and connect spots in the same city or neighboring provinces.

However, they are much less comfortable and usually difficult to predict when it arrives if you’re catching one in a small town.

Once, we had to wait almost an hour to catch a bus from Phan Rang to the city’s northern area.

Although they are not popular for travelers, you can save lots of money with them instead of taking a taxi.

For example, you can take a local bus to travel from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha (about 50 km) if you travel on a budget.

Tips : If you plan to take public buses in Ho Chi Minh, check the bus routes here .

What to pack when traveling by bus?

Here are a few tips to make your trip easier.

1. Pack light

Make sure you have two bags, one large for luggage and one smaller for purses, refreshments, and some common medications.

This will save you from having to find things in a large pile of luggage. Also, you’ll have more spacious and comfortable seats as you can store your luggage under the bus or on the roof.

2. Bring some snacks

Although long-distance buses will stop at certain points for customers to buy food or go to the bathroom, you may feel hungry at other times.

So, bring some snacks such as candy to eat when you feel hungry and recharge for the upcoming journey.

3. Bring a mask, earplugs, or earphones

If you’re catching an overnight bus or want to take a nap, just put on a mask and take a nap.

Also, bringing headphones and listening to soothing music relaxes and makes the journey feel shorter.

4. Bring hand sanitizer

Some stops don’t have sanitizer, so it’s better to bring your hand sanitizer and wet tissues.

5. Don’t forget water

Most bus operators often provide passengers with small bottles of water, but not every one of them.

Take the initiative to bring a bottle of water to drink when thirsty and avoid using carbonated soft drinks.

Rough roads and roadside foods combined with carbonated soft drinks can cause trouble for your digestive system.

  • Safety Precautions: While Vietnam is generally safe, it’s always smart to be cautious. Keep your belongings close, maybe even invest in a lock for your backpack. And always, always be aware of your surroundings. A vigilant traveler is a happy traveler! 🔒🎒
  • Understanding Local Etiquette: When in Vietnam, do as the Vietnamese do! On the bus, it’s all about respect. Offer your seat to the elderly, keep the noise down, and avoid eating smelly foods. Oh, and a smile and a simple “Xin chào” (hello) can work wonders in breaking the ice with locals. 🤝🙂

Last time I had an urgent business trip, I went online to find a bus ticket and found Vexere by accident. After consulting, I decided to book and pay. It is very convenient and fast. Just a moment later, the bus operator contacted to confirm the ticket immediately and informed me of the estimated time of pick-up so that I could prepare. I was pretty surprised that the operator got my information so quickly. That trip was great. I will definitely continue to support Vexere.
