5 things to know about airline travel alerts

Sean Cudahy

If you've had trips booked to or from Florida or other destinations on the East Coast this past week, there's a good chance you've dealt with an airline travel alert as Hurricane Ian made its way north .

These alerts are common during hurricanes as well as winter snowstorms and particularly disruptive rounds of summer thunderstorms, and often cause airlines to relax their policies surrounding itinerary changes. While they may be called something different from airline to airline — travel notice, advisory, etc. — the idea behind these alerts issued by airlines is that they give passengers improved flexibility in getting on new flights, postponing travel or avoiding cities with bad weather.

In the past, I have used the leniency offered by travel alerts to depart for a trip 24 hours early to beat a snowstorm and to avoid a connecting city where stormy weather was in the forecast. I've also canceled a trip affected by an alert and claimed travel credits I was then able to use for a future flight.

Since airlines have generally relaxed many of their cancellation and change policies compared to before the pandemic, it's much easier to change a trip for free now, even under normal circumstances, than it was a few years ago. Today, how critical a travel alert is for your itinerary often depends on the type of ticket you booked, and how flexible it was to begin with.

At the same time, these alerts can give any traveler an early heads-up about impending bad weather, prompt you to change your itinerary and help with providing added flexibility. So, knowing what a travel alert means and how to take advantage of it will help you have the smoothest and cheapest trip possible — whether it's now, in a couple of days or months down the road.

A travel alert is a good heads-up

I often add my destination city — and even connecting cities — to my iPhone's weather app in the days before a flight, but a travel alert from an airline can likewise be a good way to notice if your itinerary could be affected by bad weather.

Say you're planning to fly from Providence, Rhode Island, to Cancun, Mexico, with a connection in Atlanta. If you get a winter weather travel alert for Atlanta, that might warn you that the likelihood of a delay or cancellation due to snow or ice is high.

These alerts are often based on weather forecasts. They can be an early sign that the weather somewhere along your itinerary is looking dicey and may cause your trip to be disrupted.

Anyone should be able to change a trip

The largest U.S. airlines have relaxed change fees in recent years, allowing passengers in most ticket classes to at least cancel and get flight credit for future trips, or change a ticket and, at worst, pay a fare difference. The big exception, though, is that under normal circumstances, basic economy passengers aboard American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines don't have trip-changing flexibility.

That's where a travel alert comes in: If your trip is affected by one of these advisories, even if you booked basic economy, you'll generally be allowed to change your trip with no fees.

There's frequently no need to stand in line or call the airline's customer service number. Check the airline's app ; you may be able to quickly rebook right there.

Rebook the same trip or get flight credit

Some of the specific terms will differ from airline to airline when it comes to travel alert policies, and can also change from one specific alert to the next. However, on the three domestic legacy carriers, travel alerts often carry two general rebooking options.

If your travels are affected by the alert, you can typically rebook your trip for the near future — often directly after the weather event subsides. If you decide on this option, you may be able to rebook the same trip without paying any difference in fare, as long as you travel in the same cabin. Read the alert carefully: It should specify what the acceptable travel dates are for this option. You'll probably have to book the same origin and destination cities you had planned on your original itinerary.

Alternatively, you can often claim flight credit to use in booking a future flight. This is a good choice if you no longer want to travel to the same destination, or if that specified window of dates no longer works for you. The airlines will typically give you an option to claim flight credits for the value of your ticket. American, Delta and United often allow you a year to use these credits. One thing to watch for: Double-check the alert to see whether you have a year from when you claim the credits or a year from when the original ticket was booked; you'd hate to see those credits expire .

On Southwest Airlines, you can always cancel and rebook your trip with future flight credit, even outside of a travel alert; in fact, certain higher-fare tickets are always eligible for refunds.

Again, these are just general rules of thumb, and specific policies can vary from airline to airline and from one weather event to the next. So, be sure to check the particular alert that applies to your trip.

american airlines travel alert reddit

Not covered by the alert? Keep checking

If you're not covered by a travel alert but are concerned about impending weather, keep checking the airline's website, the app and your email inbox. As weather forecasts change, cities included in travel alerts change.

For instance, as Hurricane Ian began to form as a tropical storm over the Caribbean, airlines issued alerts for destinations like Jamaica, Grand Cayman and some Florida airports. Carriers added dozens more airports to the alerts as Ian strengthened and then moved north, though.

Changing forecasts can also greatly affect the dates listed as part of an alert, so be sure to bookmark the alert page and watch for subsequent updates.

Don't forget about refunds

Keep in mind that whether a cancellation or delay is "the airline's fault," or not, affects reimbursement for things like an extra hotel night or a meal while you wait out a delay. Generally, during bad weather — which is a common cause of travel alerts — you won't be eligible for those types of reimbursements if your trip is disrupted.

On the other hand, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a timely refund under U.S. Department of Transportation policies. That goes even for weather-related disruptions.

Keep in mind, if you take the airline up on its offer to rebook you, or accept credits for future travel, you're not eligible for a refund.

If the airline cancels your trip due to the weather though, and you'd like your money back rather than putting it toward future travel, asking the airline for a refund is certainly an option at your disposal.

Bottom line

Plenty of travelers have had to contend with travel alerts over the last couple of weeks as hurricane season threw a wrench in many fall travel plans. Knowing how these advisories work and how they can affect your trips can be crucial. This is especially true as Mother Nature is sure to intervene in itineraries in the form of snow and ice storms within the next few months.

The NAACP is threatening to issue another travel advisory warning Black Americans not to travel with American Airlines unless the carrier delivers a ‘swift and decisive response’ to a recent spate of alleged discriminatory behavior by its employees.

The warning was prompted by a recent lawsuit filed by a group of Black men who accused a flight attendant of ordering all the Black male passengers off a flight from Phoenix to New York JFK because of a complaint of body odor.

Three of the eight men removed from the flight have accused American Airlines of “blatant and egregious race discrimination” following the January 5 incident, arguing that none of the men who were booted from Flight 832 had offensive body odor.

American Airlines initially tried to get the men rebooked onto another flight but after realizing that all the other flights to JFK were fully booked, the men were permitted back onto the original flight that had, by then, been delayed by more than an hour.

As they reboarded, the men say they had to endure the stares of the mostly white passengers who “viewed them as the cause of the substantial delay”.

While this is the most high-profile case of alleged racial discrimination perpetrated by employees at American Airlines in recent months, the NAACP says this isn’t an isolated incident and that a “troubling pattern of a failure to address harmful behaviors” is starting to emerge at the Fort Worth-based carrier.

“Recent discriminatory actions from company employees prove that there is a dire need for continued accountability and resolution to this clear pattern,” commented NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson on Tuesday.

“Without a swift and decisive response, the NAACP will be forced to reinstate an advisory against the airline.”

The NAACP issued its travel advisory in the Fall of 2017, warning Black Americans that they faced “disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions” if they traveled with American Airlines.

The civil rights group lifted the advisory in July 2018, saying AA had made “substantial” progress in addressing the concerns it had raised. American Airlines has introduced a number of improvements, including implicit bias training for staffers and the creation of an advisory panel.

The NAACP now wants AA to reconvene its advisory panel in order to “devise a path forward that ensures equitable experiences for all American Airlines customers.”

The group is the oldest civil rights organisation in the United States, having been founded in Springfield, Illinois in 1909 and has over 500,000 members in the United States.

Apparently AA is indiscriminate with their discrimination: https://www.dansdeals.com/more/news/airline-news/outrageous-american-airlines-ejects-17-year-old-orthodox-jew-flight-due-actions-unrelated-orthodox-jewish-passenger/ I guess their approach whenever anyone does anything wrong is “let’s find out what minority this person is a part of and eject every member of that minority from the plane.”

This was a bad scene for sure but the NAACP is making an equally ridiculous charade against the company for no reason at all. Why run a “danger flag” up the pole when there is no dangers. This is just a mere smear campaign that the group needs to grow up and refrain from using. Moves like this is what calls the integrity and legitimacy of the organization into question over rash decisions to act that only rebrand hate in a different cloak. Reactionaries are only supposed to be just in MAGA and trump-world. American said it was going to settle with the gentlemen it admitted it harmed and I am sure the attendant who committed this disgusting offense has certainly been terminated by now. Grow up NAACP this is not 1950s Georgia, it’s 2024 America and yes dumb people make dumb mistakes that doesn’t make their employers Racist.

NAACP Calls on American Airlines to Respond to Pattern of Discrimination

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 4, 2024

Contact: Alicia Mercedes, [email protected]

WASHINGTON - Following a lawsuit filed by several African-American men accusing American Airlines of discriminatory behavior, additional reports of discrimination have surfaced which convey a troubling pattern of a failure to address harmful behaviors. Upon the lawsuit filing, American Airlines released a statement regarding an open investigation into these incidents. As of June 4, the airline's leadership has yet to provide an update on the pending investigation.

NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson has released the following statement, requesting a swift and decisive response from American Airlines:

"The NAACP is proud to champion efforts to hold corporations accountable. The removal of our travel advisory in 2018 came as a result of a commitment to deliver on key stipulations that would prevent future discriminatory acts, one of which was a diversity, equity, and inclusion advisory council. Amidst the resurgence of attacks on DEI, American Airlines disbanded the panel in 2023.

Recent discriminatory actions from company employees prove that there is a dire need for continued accountability and resolution to this clear pattern. We encourage American Airlines to come revive the advisory panel and reconvene with the NAACP to devise a path forward that ensures equitable experiences for all American Airlines customers. Without a swift and decisive response, the NAACP will be forced to reinstate an advisory against the airline."

Following reports of hostility toward Black passengers in October 2017, the NAACP issued a travel advisory, warning Black Americans of potential discrimination they could face when flying with the airline. The Association extended an opportunity for the corporation to resolve this issue through several stipulations, one of which included the advisory council referenced above. Upon acceptance of the terms, the NAACP lifted the advisory in July 2018.

The NAACP continues to work, forging a path forward where diversity, equity, and inclusion are ingrained into the fabric of corporate America, holding corporations accountable to their duties to Black consumers who drive our nation's economy. Ranked: The 9 Best Airlines for First Class

O ne of the reasons I like to collect credit card rewards is to redeem them for free flights. And not just any flights -- first class flights. I enjoy flying first and business class both domestically and while traveling abroad.

Of course, some airlines offer a much classier first class experience than others. So let's take a look at some of the best. (Keep in mind that your experience will vary a ton based on your route and plane type. For example, airlines tend to upgrade their fleets one plane at a time, so even the same route could offer different experiences depending on the aircraft.)

Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards

Best for short-haul domestic first class

Your typical domestic flight is in a two-cabin plane with a first class that offers larger seats (though not lie-flat), better meals, and free drinks.

1. Delta Airlines

My go-to airline for domestic first class is always Delta. The seats are updated and comfortable, my flights always include seatback screens with good onboard entertainment, the service is usually on point, and you really can't beat all-you-can-eat Biscoff cookies.

2. United Airlines

I spent a lot of time flying last year, and one of my favorite experiences was United's domestic first class. Even on my short flight, we were treated to an excellent meal -- on real plates -- and the service was great. United also has some of the largest seats (though the ones on my last flight could use a bit of an update).

Best for long-haul domestic first class

Usually consisting of coast-to-coast flights, long-haul domestic flights can be five or six hours long. The best airlines for these flights offer many of the same amenities as international flights, including lie-flat seats and chef-curated meals.

3. American Airlines (A321T)

One of the only planes with three cabins on a domestic flight is American Airlines A321T, which offers both business and first class seats. The first class cabin is luxurious, offering private lie-flat seats, a good meal, and high-speed wifi. And as an added bonus, first class passengers get lounge access before the flight.

4. JetBlue Mint

JetBlue calls its long-haul domestic product "business class," but it's a first class experience all the way, starting with the lie-flat seats and top-notch service. You may enjoy your trip even more if you're lucky enough to score a Mint Suite, which features even more room and a door you can close for extra privacy.

Best for international business class

Most international flights have two cabins: main and business, with no first class. In this case, you can consider the business class to be first class in all but name, offering the amenities you'd expect -- like generous lie-flat seats, excellent meals, and dedicated service.

5. Qatar Airways QSuites

Generally considered to set the standard for international business class, Qatar Airways QSuites offer exceptional privacy -- each suite has a door that closes -- luxurious bedding (including a quilted mattress), top-quality catering, and incredible service from the ground to the air.

6. All Nippon The Room

If you're lucky enough to fly aboard All Nippon's Boeing 777s, you could experience The Room, the airline's top business class product. The seat -- or, you know, Room -- itself is very spacious and private, offering the closable door that is standard in the top business class cabins. Travelers also rave about the quality of the food (a mix of Japanese and Western cuisines) and the exceptional service.

Best for international first class

Given that business class already typically offers a top-notch product, airlines with three classes of service really need to work to make international first class stand out -- and these airlines manage it with gusto. Short of chartering a private plane, these premium offerings are the most glamorous experiences you can have in the air.

7. Etihad Residence

If you've ever wanted to fly like royalty, then booking an Etihad Residence suite is the way to go. For one thing, you don't just book a seat; you have three full rooms aboard an A380 aircraft, including a living room, bedroom, and shower room. And yes, we're talking about a full-sized bed and fully equipped shower here. Oh, and let's not forget your private butler who can arrange meals -- and just about anything else you need.

8. Emirates First Class Suites

Emirates was one of the first airlines to offer fully enclosed suites, and it does it right. Not only is there a door, but the suites are fully enclosed floor-to-ceiling, offering complete privacy and tranquility for your flight. The luxury experience also includes excellent food -- caviar, anyone? -- personal climate controls, and an onboard bar.

9. Air France La Premiere

The La Premiere cabin in the 777 aircraft from Air France gives you that ooh la la feeling for sure. As you'd expect, you get your own suite, which nixes the doors for elegant curtains to give you the privacy you need. But the suite is only part of the experience. The on-board catering is impeccably French, offering food that is so far from airline fare, you'll be hard-pressed to remember you're in the air.

How to fly first class for free

Arguably the best part of all of these flights is that you can find a way to book them with points and miles. While some will be exorbitant -- think a million miles (or more), one way -- your favorite travel rewards cards could help you enjoy the luxury flight experience of a lifetime.

Three Black men sue American Airlines for racial discrimination after allegedly being pulled off plane over body odor complaint

Three Black men filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against American Airlines, claiming they were racially discriminated against when they were allegedly pulled off a plane over a body odor complaint.

The men had boarded a New York City-bound flight in Phoenix on Jan. 5 when an American Airlines employee asked eight passengers, who were all Black men, to leave the plane, according to the lawsuit. Three of them are part of the lawsuit.

The plaintiffs — Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph and Xavier Veal — say they did not know each other and were not seated together, according to the lawsuit.

In an interview Wednesday with NBC News, Jackson and Jean-Joseph said they felt singled out for being Black and were humiliated by the episode.

“Being grouped and removed hits all these trigger points of things that I don’t think should happen to Black people anymore,” Jackson, 27, said.

Jean-Joseph said the men were made to look like criminals as they walked down the aisle of the plane. He said he has not flown since the incident and that he broke down as he relived it Wednesday, when the lawsuit was filed.

“It still affects me,” he said. “When I do get on a plane again, it’s going to be something that haunts me.”

In a statement, American Airlines said it was investigating the incident and that the “claims do not reflect our core values or our purpose of caring for people.”

“We take all claims of discrimination very seriously and want our customers to have a positive experience when they choose to fly with us,” the company said.

All eight men reboarded the flight about an hour later, after complaining about discrimination and after the airline could not book them on a later flight, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in the Eastern District of New York.

The plaintiffs are seeking awards of compensatory damages to be determined in a jury trial.

“They suffered during the entire flight home, and the entire incident was traumatic, upsetting, scary, humiliating, and degrading,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit also alleges that American Airlines has a documented history of mistreating Black passengers, citing a 2017 NAACP travel advisory warning Black passengers that their safety could be compromised if they flew American Airlines, referencing a series of “troublesome conduct” by employees at the time.

At the time, then-CEO Doug Parker said the company does not “tolerate discrimination of any kind” and said American Airlines had reached out to the NAACP to discuss concerns.

Mexico has a new president, Claudia Sheinbaum. What does it mean for the United States?

american airlines travel alert reddit

When Mexicans elected a new president, they also chose the next negotiator-in-chief who will make tough choices with the United States on issues from immigration and trade to fentanyl trafficking .

Mexicans voted overwhelmingly for Claudia Sheinbaum, giving her more than 58% of the vote and a substantial mandate to govern the second-largest economy in Latin America and the No. 1 trading partner for the United States.

When President Andrés Manuel López Obrador leaves his post and Sheinbaum takes office on Oct. 1, she'll inherit a country that is reeling from slow economic growth and violence linked to organized crime . She'll also face a fractured relationship with the United States. Despite deep cross-border economic ties, the U.S.-Mexico relationship has been tested by the countries' shared problems with global migration and drug trafficking .

"The two countries have been suffering from an incredible fumbling of the ball in dealing with each other," said Tony Payan, director of the Center for the U.S. and Mexico at Rice University's Baker Institute. "I think the two countries need to come back to the table."

Politics: 'Finish the wall.' Why the southern border became a big issue for this New England state.

Americans may love "taco Tuesday" and vacationing in Cancun, but the complexity of the U.S.-Mexico relationship is often lost amid marketing and political rhetoric. Mexico’s stamp on the U.S. is everywhere.

It’s in the Mexico-made car parts  that keep U.S. autoworkers employed in Detroit , in the windmill blades exported to  U.S. clean energy plants , in the  pacemakers saving the lives of American patients  with heart failure, and in the $15  avocado toast on restaurant menus  nationwide.

U.S. exports to Mexico include grains grown in the Midwest and natural gas pumped in Texas. Mexico sends fruits and vegetables north, keeping grocery costs lower amid volatile inflation in the U.S.

The country  became the United States’ largest trading partner  last year, pushing China to the No. 2 spot, and the two neighbors now do  nearly $800 billion in trade annually , according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

But it’s a fraught relationship. Mexico is also the transit country for hundreds of thousands of U.S.-bound migrants, provoking repeated humanitarian crises at the U.S. border. And it’s the source country for the fentanyl that kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada foreign trade agreement, known as the USMCA – negotiated during the Trump administration – is up for renegotiation in 2026. U.S.-based business leaders are concerned that renegotiating the deal could create uncertainty and hurt both countries' economies.

"Mexico is now the U.S.’s main trading partner," said Jennifer Apperti, director of the Texas-Mexico Center at Southern Methodist University. "To again reopen the door to things that have just been negotiated would be, honestly, not the best use of time. And business time is of the essence."

Domingo Garcia, president of the U.S.-based League of United Latin American Citizens, said in a statement that he looked forward to "building bridges" with the Sheinbaum administration.

In past meetings, Garcia said he found Sheinbaum "open, engaging, and willing to listen and share her thoughts on moving forward. Mexicans are vital to the United States' economic future and our hemisphere's overall robust vibrancy. At the same time, we must consider environmental and scientific initiatives in the interest of our well-being today and for future generations."

With an estimated 60% turnout for Sunday's vote, it was one of Mexico’s biggest elections in history. Nearly 100 million people were eligible to vote.

For the first time, Mexican citizens living in the United States were able to cast their ballots in person at 20 consulates in the U.S., including in Phoenix.
