Alok Vaid-Menon on living beyond the gender binary

Profile image of Alok Vaid-Menon with arms wrapped around their chest and head thrown back.

Born in America's conservative south to Malaysian and Indian parents, Alok felt like an outsider growing up.

While at home, Alok wore their sister's dresses freely, school was a completely different story.

Turning to books for consolation and inspiration, they are now an acclaimed writer and performance artist sharing their story — and what it means to live beyond the gender binary — with the world.

A warning: this story discusses suicide ideation.

Finding acceptance in family

"In Texas at the time, we were never taught anything about LGBTQ people, let alone gender and sexuality at all," Alok says.

"From a young age, I was made to feel as if the world would be better off without me."

But despite being judged by the outside world for their feminine expression, Alok was able to be themself among family.

"At home I was able to wear whatever I wanted. So I would wear my sister's clothes and my parents wouldn't comment on it," they say.

"And I would dance around at all of my Indian dinner parties and people would cheer for me. And people just thought it was because I loved my sister.

"My family was actually incredibly accepting of me."

The culture of acceptance within Alok's own family had much to do with Alok's aunt, Urvashi Vaid, a high-profile Indian-born American lesbian activist, lawyer, and writer.

"She kind of did a lot of the work for me before I was even born. And she kind of clued my parents into the fact that I might be queer, and schooled them and was like, 'You can't mess this kid up. They're special'," Alok says.

It was only at school that Alok first experienced bullying.

"Like many LGBTQ kids, I heard slurs first before I heard identities for myself. So people would make fun of me and insult me and call me a 'sissy' and all these awful things."

Some of Alok's earliest memories are seeking to repress their identity: deepening their voice, and changing the way they walked and gestured.

"And I was doing that maybe from age four or five," they say.

"I never really shared my full self with people because I was so scared that I would be abandoned or hurt or attacked if I did.

"I suffered from a very young age from extreme depression and dissociation. And I struggled a lot like many trans youth to suicidal ideation. And no one knew, because I was so good at playing pretend."

'I didn't come out of the closet, I came out of the library'

Reading became a therapeutic form of escape for Alok.

"I didn't come out of the closet, I came out of the library. And I read, and I read, and I read so much science fiction and fantasy," Alok says.

"I didn't have access to physical safety outside, I retreated into my mind. And I dreamed myself into existence."

Despite being called slurs their whole life, Alok learnt words to describe their identity — that weren't demeaning — while studying at Stanford University.

"When I was in college, for the first time, I heard about non-binary and gender non-conforming and it just hit me like a ton of bricks.

"And it was really emotional for me, because it made my entire life make sense," they say.

"Because when I was younger, I'd known that there were people who transition from being assigned male at birth to being a female and vice versa. But I didn't know that there were people who were neither."

It was the first time Alok found friendships based on genuine connection.

"Most of my friendships in high school were based off of the pretence of me disappearing myself," they say.

"But in university, it was the first time I made friends based off of me actually being myself."

Beyond the binary

Alok hopes for a future beyond the gender binary, and for greater understanding and acceptance.

"What scares so many people about gender fluid people, is that we're asking them to get curious about a world that they thought was permanent, and absolute and fixed," Alok says.

"And we're saying no — actually imagine something greater."

Alok takes the stage across the world — and will appear at Sydney's Festival of Dangerous Ideas this September — to share their personal story.

"The truth is, everyone is harmed by the gender binary, because it makes us have to pretend to be these mythological stereotypes of what a man and a woman are, without asking, 'Who do you want to be?'

"I see this very clearly around body hair. I've made the decision not to remove my body hair. And I get so much vitriol from cisgender women, and I'm like, 'You grow this too. What made you believe that you are wrong and full of shame?'

"It's easier to demonise me than it is to implicate the people in your own family and in your own society, who made you feel like you could only be beautiful and could only be a woman if you removed your body hair.

"So that's why I have patience. And I have mercy. And I have compassion, because so many people are suffering from these gender norms. But they don't even know that they are."

Welcome to Australia

Marvels both natural and monumental astound throughout this "dreamtime" land down under... from the monolithic Ayers Rock (Uluru)... to a foodie tour in the multicultural melting pot of Sydney... to Australia's white-sailed landmark... and in the rainbow hues woven throughout the waters that make up the the Great Barrier Reef... the adventure begins here.

Sydney opera house, one of the world's most famous buildings... and more than just an opera house.

One of the most famous and recognizable structures dominating the skyline of iconic Sydney Harbour is the Sydney Opera House. With its striking modern expressionist design by Danish architect Jørn Utzon resembling a series of concrete "shells", it was completed in 1973 after nearly 15 years of construction, and has since become one of the world's most renowned buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not simply a single "opera house" as its name may imply, this major performing arts center houses numerous performance spaces including concert halls, theatres and recording studios, and is home to Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Theatre Company.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the Outback

Aboriginal traditions and a natural wonder at uluru (ayers rock) in australia's "red centre".

Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is a massive red sandstone monolith rising dramatically out of the desert Outback (or "Red Centre") in Australia's Northern Territory, and is one of the country's most recognizable features and popular attractions. Sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the local Aboriginal people of the region, Uluru is geologically classified as an inselberg (an "island mountain"); a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of Australia's Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, it's a natural wonder that will take your breath away…

The Great Barrier Reef

Discover australia's amazing great barrier reef.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is longer than the Great Wall of China, and considered the largest living thing on Earth. With a biology presentation and snorkeling demonstration en route, Tauck takes you on a cruise to the Outer Reef to swim, snorkel or sightsee in a glass-bottom vessel – or enjoy optional activities like scuba diving, helmet diving and more.

Sydney Harbour

There's no better way to experience iconic sydney harbour than aboard an evening cruise.

With its iconic skyline comprising some of the 20th century's most innovative architecture, Australia's Sydney Harbour is perhaps the most recognizable urban waterfront on Earth. Two of the Harbour's most remarkable "residents" include the striking Sydney Harbour Bridge – the world's tallest steel arch bridge, opened in 1932 and dubbed "The Coathanger" by locals due to its shape – and the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most distinctive buildings since its completion in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's no better way to enjoy the Harbour's highlights than aboard a private evening cruise featuring a reception and dinner.

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park

Discover aboriginal traditions at tjapukai aboriginal cultural park in cairns.

Established in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, in 1987, Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park has been sharing the authentic culture and traditions of the local Djabugay Aboriginal people for over three decades through performance, dance, cuisine and the arts. On your visit, you may learn how to "shake a leg" by joining in traditional performances, make fire without a matchstick, and create the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo.

From Deserts to Reefs

G’day, every day, Australia! Beaches to “barbies,” koalas to wallabies, Outback to ocean…where to begin your Australia tour on this island-country-continent? Travel in Australia and you'll find unique wildlife and dramatic landscapes, no doubt. Or perhaps the sun-kissed Harbour City of Sydney, Melbourne’s art scene or Barossa Valley’s world-class wineries. Go as far back as Aboriginal life in places like Ayers Rock and Alice Springs to discover how to survive in the bush, throw boomerangs and play a didgeridoo. Whatever your fancy, Australia welcomes you.

Explore More

Destination must-see's.

Australia ms1

Ayers Rock (Uluru):

You will find this towering sandstone rock formation rising from the desert floor in the southern part of the Northern Territory of central Australia. It sits in a remote part of the Outback 208 miles southwest of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. The rock is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural landmarks and rises 1,142 feet… making it 2,381 feet above sea level.

Australia ms2

The most populous city in Australia is located on Australia’s east coast. This lively metropolis is surrounded by one of the world’s largest natural harbors. The first British settlers founded the city of Sydney in 1788, but it is said that the area had been inhabited for many years. Millions of tourists visit Sydney each year to see its natural features such as Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach, as well as its man-made marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Australia ms3

The city was founded on August 30, 1835 and is located on a large natural bay – Port Phillip. Today it is often referred to as Australia’s cultural capital because of its renowned performing and visual arts scenes. Melbourne is known as the birthplace of Australian dance styles, the Australian film industry, Australian impressionist art and the Australian television industry.

Australia ms4

Kakadu National Park:

This protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia is about 100 miles east of Darwin. It is the largest national park in Australia covering 7,646 square miles, and measuring nearly 125 miles from north to south and 62 miles from east to west. The park is roughly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu features many diverse landscapes perfect for outback adventure travel, nature activities and most of all, experiencing aboriginal culture.

Destination Must-Do's

Australia md1

Great Barrier Reef:

Experience one of the seven wonders of the natural world when you set off by boat for the Great Barrier Reef. As the world’s largest living organism, you’ll find over 2,800 individual coral reef systems which are home to amazingly diverse marine life. Their bright colors look remarkable against the turquoise waters. Jump in the water to snorkel and really experience the Reef in an immersive way! Stroll along the shore, relax on the beach, or just watch the fish and sea turtles swim past from the pier. It’s a truly good day at the Reef, mate.

Australia md2

Barossa Valley:

The valley located in South Australia is known as a major wine-producing region. In fact, it is renowned as one of the finest wine producing regions in the world. Located about 37 miles northeast of Adelaide, the valley is formed by the North Pala River, is home to more than 550 growers, and is famous for its Shiraz.

Australia md3

This island state that includes the island of Tasmania and the surrounding 334 islands is 150 miles south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. It may be famous for its Tasmanian Devil but it is also very eco-conscious with 45% of its land being reserves, national parks and World Heritage sites.

Australia md4

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. They are found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand. In Australia they are often called fairy penguins and in New Zealand they are known as little blue penguins or blue penguins. These penguins emerge from the shore at Phillip Island nearly every evening and make their way to their evening resting spots.
