African Lion Safaris

Encounters with the icon of africa.

The true icon of Africa’s Big Five, the African lion is the symbol of strength and power, the epitome of any safari to wild Africa. Today, catching sight of this apex predator is one of the most sought-after prizes for almost every safari-goer, with regal prides located from East to South.

Observing the social aspect of lions' lives is one of the most memorable elements of an encounter with the species. Out on the wild African plains, females stalk big game as they feed on tasty grasses, prides nap in the shade and cubs play under the watchful eye of their mothers as males fight for the crown. Exploring via game drives and even walking safaris, witness the wild behaviours of these magnificent mammals.

Where can you see the African Lion?

African Lions are found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% of the population in eastern or southern Africa and three of the five largest populations in Tanzania. African Lions used to be found across most of the continent, but in recent decades they have disappeared from 12 sub-Saharan countries.

BW

THE AFRICAN LION

  • Lions are notably the only sociable big cat, with prides formed of a few muscular males, crowned with a thick mane and measuring up to 3.5m long and up to 272kg.
  • Most of the hunting is done by the smaller more agile females, weighing between 110 kg and 168 kg, who will work together to hunt anything from small antelope up to buffalo and even giraffe; in Savuti in Botswana, they have learnt to hunt young elephant.
  • The males will often get involved to help tackle the dangerous animals. Males have a large mane of hair which can be beige or black depending on the individual and the area they live in.

African Lion Safari Destinations

  • Masai Mara National Reserve: A great place to see lions year-round in the flat, wide and open plains of the Masai Mara. In July, 2 million wildebeest cross the Mara River under the eyes of the hungry lions.
  • Serengeti National Park: Three of the five largest lion populations are in Tanzania and the Serengeti is one of the best spots to see lions due to the availability of food and the million wildebeest.
  • In Southern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is one of Africas hidden treasures with only 6000 visitors a year. Second to the Serengeti, Ruaha is home to 10% of the worlds lion population so there is great opportunities to see lions around less safari vehicles.
  • The Ngorongoro Crater offers the oppourtunity to see the Big 5 in a different setting, in the worlds largest inactive volcanic caldera.
  • Okavango Delta: The Okavango Delta is the best place to see water-adapted lions in Africa, these lions are 15% larger than others and have adapted to hunting during the day when the buffalo are grazing. The permanent water and nutritious grasses makes the Okavango Delta the perfect habitat for buffalo and you may witness lions fighting them here.
  • Kruger National Park: Most of South Africa’s lions can be found in Kruger National Park. Being the size of Wales, it can be hard to find them, but South Kruger has way more lions as it is wetter and greener. We recommend staying at Sabi Sands, which is one of the most reliable places to see lions in Africa. Timbavati is also the best place to see white lions in Africa.

Lions are highly adaptable, and in Namibia you will find ‘desert-adapted’ or ‘desert-lions’, that have adapted to survive in the harsh landscape of little vegetation and prey. The best places to see lions in Namibia is in Kaokoveld and Damaraland, but be aware these lions are nomadic and you are not guaranteed to see them.

African Lion Conservation

In just 25 years, Africa’s lion population dramatically dropped with only 50% of their numbers remaining across the iconic landscapes of the continent. The IUCN classified these majestic creatures as “vulnerable” as a result, a subject of habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, poaching and human-lion conflict.

It was as a result of this revelation that the Lionscape Coalition was formed, in response to the growing threat of extinction and the predictable knock-on effect this would have on Africa’s biodiversity. Lions are classed as an “umbrella species”; with a wild lion population thriving, the entire surrounding eco-system functions effectively, ultimately also affecting the livelihoods of those relying on ecotourism for survival. The Lionscape Coalition sees four commercial competitors, who share the bold vision of the Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) to double wild lion numbers by 2050, collaborate on lion conservation programmes across Africa. Putting all commercial considerations aside, this alliance brings to this initiative over 100 years of positive conservation and community impact throughout Africa.

Lions are a resilient species so the future looks bright. These animals will rapidly reproduce if their habitats are protected if communities have incentives to co-exist and protect them. Creating healthy ‘lionscapes’ which can benefit these local communities is key to the success of population decline being reversed and many other species will recover in the process.

When is the Best Time to See African Lions?

The best time to see lions is during the peak safari season from July to October. The cool, dry winter means less vegetation for wildlife to hide behind and the lack of rain means wildlife will congregate around the lakes and rivers and most wildlife wont stray too far from the little water left.

A member of the “Big 5” and perhaps Africa’s most iconic species, the African Lion is a highly sought after sighting while out on safari.

Lions sitting on a rock in Tanzania

Common Name – African Lion

Scientific Name – Panthera Leo

Current IUCN Red List Status – VU

Estimated no. of mature individuals – 23,000 -39,000

Lions are capable of living in a wide variety of habitats and are found across parts of sub-Saharan Africa (mostly Southern and Eastern Africa). Lions generally stick to areas such as grasslands, shrubs and open woodland – however a small number have adapted over generations to thrive in the harsh Namib Desert in Namibia.

The only cats that live in groups – known as prides – lion prides can comprise up to 40 individuals. Though rare to see prides of this size, it is possible. More often than not, prides sizes vary between 8-25 individuals. Most of the hunting is done by female lions working as a team, and who will hunt anything from small antelope to buffalo. Some lion prides have been known to specialise in hunting even larger prey including elephant and giraffe. Males will often only help at the last moment or to bring down large prey – sometimes they run in only when the hunt is over taking the biggest share!

Lion viewing Safaris

Most lion viewing across Africa is done by vehicle on morning and afternoon game drives. It’s a thrilling experience coming face-to-face with a lion in the wild and many guests find a lion encounter to be a major highlight of an African safari. The cats may even use the vehicle as spot for shade, and guides can often find their vehicle surrounded by a handful of lions hiding from the sun.

Lions are fascinating to watch, particularly the dynamic within the pride and many safari-goers will happily watch for hours as the lions hunt or play. Playful cubs interact with one another under the watchful eye of their mothers and sometimes, the cheeky cubs might antagonise a big grumpy male.

Walking safaris offer the chance to see smaller creatures and learn more about native plants, but on occasion there is a chance to see lions – and from a very different perspective. To walk in Africa is to be a part of Africa, leaving nothing but footprints behind. Zimbabwe’s Hwange and Mana Pools national parks along with Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park are some of the best places in Africa to experience a multi-day walking safari reminiscent of a by-gone era. Both offer a truly unique experience while walking amongst Africa’s big game creates live long memories others can only dream of.

What is a male lion coalition?

Coalitions are normally made up of 2-4 male lions (usually brothers or half-brothers) who hunt and fight off threats as a team. The more males working together, the stronger they are. It’s easier to keep control of a territory or fight an intruder if they work together.

When is the best time to see lions?

Like most other animals, the best time to see these cats is during the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. During the day, lions will often find a shady spot to avoid the heat and conserve energy.

African Lion Facts:

Sleepy cats A lion can sleep for up to 20 hours in a single day.

Hear me roar Depending on the wind direction, you can hear a lion roar from up to 7 or 8 kilometres away.

Big appetites Like other cats, lions may not know when their next meal might come from, meaning that they will consume food at an extraordinarily fast rate. This also helps to explain why they need to sleep for so long, to enable digestion.

Night vision A lion’s night vision is up to 6 times more sensitive to light than humans.

Weight Male lions are much larger than females and can weigh as much as 190 kilograms (420 pounds)Desert-adapted Lions – Also known as ‘desert lions’ these lions can live without water for extended periods. To cover long distances over the hot desert sand their legs tend to be slightly longer than ‘regular lions’, whilst their coats are slightly thicker to combat the cold temperatures at night. The best place to see these lions is in Northern Namibia.

Lion Safari

Lions in africa.

Sighting lions on an African safari is one of the most exhilarating moments you could ever experience. Although we are legally dealing with "cats" because of their comfortingly feline name, Panthera leo, lions are breathtakingly enormous, almost bear-sized. Everyone can see who the boss is because of their chiseled, barrel-chested bodies, and it's not the two-legged critters with sunglasses.

Top predators in Africa, lions hunt on large animals including zebras, buffalo, giraffes, hippopotamuses, and even baby elephants. It's heart-in-mouth stuff to see lionesses on the hunt, and their entourage of hyenas, jackals, and vultures always makes for an interesting sideshow.

The lion is one of the Big 5 and Africa’s most powerful big cats. The lion is a large carnivorous feline mammal with a tawny coat, tufted tail, and, in the case of the male, a thick mane around the neck and shoulders. A group of related mothers and cubs that live in a home range or area make up a pride of lions. The majority of males are nomads who have won control of pride through conflict with other males. We include some of our top picks in Africa for lion safaris so you can view these majestic animals in their natural environment.

Where are the best areas to view lions in Africa?

Lions in south africa.

In South Africa, the Greater Kruger Area is the best place to see lions. The nearby Timbavati Game Reserve and Sabi Sand Game Reserve also offer excellent opportunities to witness lion pride. Lion Sands and Singita's Ebony and Sweni lodges, both located in the center of "big cat country," are other excellent choices in Kruger National Park.

Since there aren't many white lions left in the wild, seeing one is both unique and unusual. You can observe them up close at Timbavati Game Reserve, where this bloodline still exists. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, just a few hours from Cape Town, is another location in South Africa where you can have the chance to spot white lions.

Lions in Kenya

Every year over 1,5 million wildebeest cross the mara river in search of greener pastures across the Maasai Mara, inviting lions due to their numbers. The flat, open plains of the Mara are ideal for cheetahs since they are ideally adapted to them. As a result, it's an excellent site to witness the fastest land mammal in the world pursue its prey all year round in Africa.

Lions in Tanzania

If you want to see lions in Tanzania, there is no question about where to go: the Serengeti. Here, sightings of lions are common due to the area's rolling plains that are teeming with prey. Although the Serengeti receives the majority of visitors, you would regret skipping Ruaha National Park from your lion safari itinerary. Not only is Ruaha the biggest national park in the nation, but it's also one of its best-kept secrets. Low visitor traffic leaves wildlife encounters largely unaffected, allowing you to awe at Ruaha's remarkable predator population, most notably the lion.

Lions in Botswana

The Savuti region in Chobe is a well-known arena where lion prides frequently engage in territorial disputes with hyena clans for food. The strong lions that live in this distant region are also well-known for killing some of Africa's largest species, including buffalo, giraffes, and even elephants. All wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy Savuti, one of the best locations in Africa to observe lions in the midst of the most exciting predator action.

The lions of the Duba Plains in the northern Okavango Delta have figured out how to thrive there despite the fact that cats are known to abhor water. This area is sprawling with buffalos due to its nourishing grass and many water bodies, making it an ideal area for lions.   But 2,000 pounds of hoof and horn don't give up easily, and the lions of the Duba Plains have become truly amazing creatures. The lions in this region are bigger than usual due to the regular resistance they face with the elements and their many fights when hunting buffalos. They've also learned to hunt during the day while the buffalo herds are grazing on the exposed floodplains (typically, prides hunt at night and sleep during the day).

Lions in Zambia

The majority of Africa's lions reside in the Luangwa Valley, a wildlife paradise and home to the South Luangwa National Park, which is one of Zambia's vast reserves.

Walking safaris were invented here, and several lodges provide anything from morning strolls to multi-day hikes. But if you patrol the Luangwa River's banks from May to October, you'll be high and dry in a 4X4. Animals swarm the banks and oxbow lakes, making the lions of the Luangwa flock in these areas to catch prey.

Top 10 Best Places To See Lions in Africa

Top 10 Best Places To See Lions in Africa

Anthony is a renowned Africa expert and author of many Lonely Planet guidebooks to Africa.

Lions are very often the biggest prize of an African safari. No animals stalk the plains, or roar in the night, with quite the same power and gravitas of a lion. Although lions are facing challenges across the continent, you can still see them, often quite easily, in many parks and reserves of southern and East Africa. Keep reading for our pick of the 10 best places to see lions in Africa.

10,585 African Safaris

1. Masai Mara (Kenya)

The Masai Mara is filled with lions. From Masai Mara National Reserve to the more exclusive Maasai-run conservancies that lie adjacent to the reserve to the north and east, large prides of lions roam the Mara. This is classic safari terrain. The savannah grasslands and light woodlands make for an ideal lion habitat while also offering perfect visibility for seeing lions. The conservancies are especially good if you want to escape the crowds.

  • Best time to see lions in the Masai Mara: Lions are best seen during the Dry season (June to October). They’re very much a part of the great migration experience, which begins in the Mara in July or August, and is at its best in September and October.

1,496 Masai Mara Safaris

2. Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)

The vast plains of the Serengeti are perfect for seeing lions. Whether the great wildebeest migration is passing through or not, there are always lots of lions around. They’re most commonly seen in the Seronera region of the Central Serengeti but going on a game drive anywhere in this fantastic park puts you in a good position to see lions. Watching a family of cubs playing atop one of the kopjes (rocky outcrops) that are so typical here is a very Serengeti experience.

  • Best time to see lions in the Serengeti: July to February or March is generally dry, with good conditions for seeing lions. The great migration begins in the park’s south in January and February, and moves north through the park until it crosses into Kenya’s Masai Mara sometime between July and September.

3. Kruger National Park (South Africa)

When it comes to where to see lions in Africa, there is nowhere better than Kruger National Park. With hundreds of kilometers of easily accessible safari trails and excellent places to stay, this is a brilliant spot to see not just lions, but big cats in general. Visibility is also excellent with lots of open country and plenty of prey species to draw the lions out into view.

  • Best time to see lions in Kruger: There’s no bad time to see lions in Kruger, but the mildest and driest conditions are usually from May to September

4. Queen Elizabeth National Park (Uganda)

Easily one of Uganda’s best national parks for seeing lions, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of few places in Africa where you can consistently see lions up in the trees. The park’s Ishasha sector is where this happens most often. There’s nothing quite like staring up into the branches of an African sycamore fig tree or an umbrella acacia and finding an entire pride of lions looking back at you.

  • Best time to see lions in Queen Elizabeth NP: The best months for visiting Queen Elizabeth NP are during the Dry seasons, which run from January to February and June to July

683 Queen Elizabeth NP Safaris

5. Sabi Sands & Timbavati (South Africa)

Part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, the privately run Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Timbavati Nature Reserve are just as good as the national park itself (there are no fences between them), but without the crowds. These two reserves are known for their big-cat sightings and for being among the best places to see lions in Africa. Timbavati is also one of few places in Africa to have a handful of white lions.

  • Best time to see lions in Sabi Sands and Timbavati: As with Kruger National Park, you can visit Sabi Sands and Timbavati year-round, but May to September are usually the driest months

106 Sabi Sands Safaris 47 Timbavati Safaris

6. Okavango Delta (Botswana)

There’s a reason so many wildlife documentaries starring lions are filmed in the Okavango Delta. Lions stalk the islands and channels of this amazing place, and while sightings are never guaranteed, the Delta does have one of the highest lion densities anywhere in southern Africa. This applies in the Moremi Game Reserve as much as it does in the exclusive private concessions into which much of the Okavango is divided.

  • Best time to see lions in the Okavango Delta: Looking for lions is best from July to October. This is during the Dry season when most of the lodges are open and water levels are high, meaning that the animals are unable to disperse into the surrounding area.

272 Okavango Safaris

7. Etosha National Park (Namibia)

Namibia’s premier safari park is also the best place in the country to see lions. More than 700 are thought to roam across this fascinating ecosystem, and lions are often sighted hunting, feeding or just relaxing by the many waterholes throughout the park. Much of the park has very little vegetation, meaning you can see lions from a long way off, which only adds to the excitement of it all.

  • Best time to see lions in Etosha: To see Etosha at its best and increase your chances of seeing lions, come during the dry winter months from July to October

146 Etosha Safaris

8. Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Botswana)

Spread across a vast area of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is known for its golden grasslands, as a homeland for the San people, and as a place to see what may be some of Africa’s biggest lions. Male Kalahari lions, for example, are known for their dark, luxuriant manes. They played a starring role in the 1984 classic book ‘Cry of the Kalahari’.

  • Best time to see lions in the Central Kalahari: You can visit the Central Kalahari any time of the year, but it can be bitterly cold at night and in the early morning from May to September. The best months are generally from December to March.

26 Central Kalahari Safaris

9. Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe)

Hwange National Park will be forever remembered as the former home of Cecil, a magnificent male lion that was shot by a hunter just outside Hwange back in 2015, sparking an international outcry. Cecil’s offspring, and lots of other lions, still roam this fantastic park, and it’s one of few places in Africa where lions are known to hunt elephants. If you’re lucky enough to see this happen, it’s an epic clash.

  • Best time to see lions in Hwange: The prime time for wildlife viewing in Hwange is from July to October, at the middle and end of the Dry season. Battles between lions and elephants usually happen around October, when water is scarce.

107 Hwange Safaris

10. South Luangwa National Park (Zambia)

Zambia sees far fewer safari visitors than it deserves, and South Luangwa National Park is a very underrated park. It’s known for its lions and leopards, among many other species. While it’s one of the more popular parks in the country, South Luangwa’s safari trails are much quieter than many others in Africa, and you usually won’t have to share each lion sighting with too many other vehicles.

  • Best time to see lions in South Luangwa: The months from July to October, during the middle and end of the Dry season, are the ideal time to go looking for lions in South Luangwa

Asian Elephant

Elephants are the largest living land animals. An adult male Asian elephant can stand up to 2.8 metres tall at the shoulders and can weigh up to 4,500 kilograms. Females are slightly smaller. Elephants have the second longest life span of any living mammal, second only to man. There are three species of elephants: Asian elephants, African forest elephants, and African savannah elephants. The Asian and African savannah elephants are both listed as endangered, and the African forest elephants are listed as critically endangered. It is estimated that less than 35,000 Asian elephants survive today in the wild. The greatest threat to the wild Asian elephant is the rapid destruction of the elephant habitat in southern Asia.

OUR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME

African Lion Safari maintains one of the most successful conservation programmes for Asian elephants in North America. African Lion Safari has participated in a number of important research projects on the Asian elephant focusing on reproduction and endocrinology. It is hoped that through this research we can better understand the biology and physiology of the Asian elephant. African Lion Safari’s goal is to continue its successful conservation programme for the endangered Asian elephant to conserve these magnificent animals for future generations.

The Lion is one of the largest cats in the world with males being taller and heavier than females and displaying a mane of long hair around their faces.

Crowning Glory

The color of the lion’s mane can range from blonde, red, brown, and black. Its color depends on the lion’s health, testosterone levels, and vigor. The darker the mane, the more the lion will scare off potential rivals and attract potential mates.

African lions are diurnal and nocturnal; however, they are extremely lazy and can sleep for up to 22 hours per day.

Combined Safaris in East Africa

Tanzania is one of East Africa's most remarkable wildlife destinations. The diversity of landscapes, wealth of wildlife, and sheer beauty of the country places it firmly in the upper-echelon of safari destinations.

Kenya, with its incredible wildlife conservancies and reserves, has been at the forefront of safari in Africa for decades - and it's leading the way in responsible and eco-tourism, demonstrating how travel can be an incredibly powerful force for good.

Kenya and Tanzania are the theatre for the annual Great Migration .

In Uganda, the mountain gorillas take centre stage. It's one of the few places left in the world where you can trek into dense rainforest, accompanied by expert local guides, in search of families of mountain gorillas in the wild.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda can be combined in hundreds of ways. Let us help show you how.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Insider Tips from a Local

M y husband and I absolutely love the San Diego Zoo and its sister property, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (previously known as the San Diego Wild Animal Park). So much so, that we’ve been members for years.

We appreciate the impressive number and species of animals housed here, the lush gardens, and the picturesque settings of these two parks. But more importantly, the Zoo and Safari Park are a renowned conservation organization. They have several programs committed to preserving endangered wildlife species worldwide.

The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park while the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is situated 35 miles northwest of San Diego in the rolling hills of the San Pasqual Valley near Escondido.

With a massive 1,800 acres of land, 300 species and more than 3,600 animals on site, the Safari Park can feel overwhelming for a first-time visitor. However, with some advanced planning and tips we’re providing, you’ve got the tools to ensure your remarkable experience.

Timing Your Visit

Of no surprise, weekends and holidays are always the busiest times to be at the Safari Park, as are the summer months when many families vacation in San Diego. Getting to the park as early as possible to park opening is wise for many reasons.

The animals are more active in the morning, you’ll navigate fewer crowds, it’s the ideal time to watch shows and keeper talks, and if you’re visiting in the summer, this park can get quite warm as it’s more inland. Temperatures can easily reach the high 80s and, on some days, well into the 90s.

Other months of the year tend to be much more comfortable and here’s an insider tip you’ll appreciate: more animals give birth in the spring, so if you’re visiting at this time, you’re likely to see more of these adorable babies.

Pre-Planning Your Visit- Pre-Purchase Tickets and Download the App

Plan to spend no less than a full day here if you want to get the most out of your Safari Park experience. I highly recommend downloading the San Diego Zoo Safari Park app. This GPS-enabled map will allow visitors to view the daily schedule, discover dining and activities, import their tickets or memberships to the digital wallet and add their must-see wildlife to the day planner. Though paper maps are available after passing through the Safari Park entrance, guests can download a PDF map to familiarize themselves with the layout of the Park. Download it here for Android or Apple devices.

In addition, if you want to avoid the lines at the ticket booths at the Park entrance, you can purchase your tickets and tours in advance (more about tours a bit later).

Tickets can be purchased online here or used in combination with a San Diego Go Explorer Pass , or San Diego CityPASS . If, however, you are using the veterans’ or AAA membership discounts on admission, these tickets must be purchased at the park entrance.

Money Saving Tip: If you plan to visit the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park, you can also by a combo-ticket that saves you a little bit of money.

What to Wear for the Safari Park

Depending upon the time of year, it’s always good to check the weather forecast. Just be sure to check the weather conditions in Escondido versus San Diego as these areas can vary quite a bit. My best advice is to layer your clothing. You may want that jacket or sweater for your early morning arrival and then not need it once the sun comes out. Or need it again, once the sun goes down. Also, I’m a big fan of wearing cotton clothing that’s cool and comfortable. And if you want to dress in safari-type attire, go for it. It’s all part of the experience, and you won’t be alone.

Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking in the Park, be sure to wear good tennis shoes or hiking shoes. DO NOT wear flip-flops. You are not at the beach and you’ll regret this decision by the end of the day.

What to Pack for Your Visit

Make sure to come prepared for your Safari Park visit, especially if you’re bringing little ones with you. Even if you don’t, you’ll be glad to have these items during your exploration time. To ensure we don’t forget the necessities, we make a list and then check those items off as they’re packed to go.

Use a Light Backpack

Don’t forget your backpack! This is the best way to carry your most-needed items, but do keep your backpack a lightweight type so it doesn’t become too heavy as the day unfolds.

Take a Re-useable Water Bottle

We make sure to include a re-usable water bottle for each family member and we keep it in the freezer overnight, then fill it with ice water in the morning before leaving for the Park. There are places to get refills throughout the Park including complimentary ice water from vendors you can use to refill your bottle.

Bring Your Own Snacks and Meals

I do not pack meals when visiting the Safari Park, but you certainly can. Because the non-profit organization consisting of the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Safari Park are unable to customize food items to meet all dietary restrictions, they allow outside food to be brought into the park. This can be a big cost-saver for families and I’ve seen many of them take advantage of this option.

When our family visits, however, we do bring snacks. You’d be surprised at how hungry you will be with all the walking you’ll be doing. Our favorites? Granola bars, fruit snacks, and trail mix.

Be aware that you can’t bring glass bottles, straws, and large coolers.

Don’t Forget Your Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Wipes and Hand Sanitizer

This might seem like an unnecessary reminder, but when you’re getting ready to head to the Park in the morning, these are items that can be easily missed. Again, the park can get quite warm, especially during the summer and early fall months, so you’ll want to make sure to protect your skin with a good hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

And speaking of protection, I always keep a small pack of hand wipes and hand sanitizer with me, especially when I’m sharing public spaces (and germs) with others (and animals!).

Take Binoculars

If you have binoculars, make sure to bring them along. You’ll be glad you did when they provide some unbelievable close-ups of the animals. The lighter the better so they’re not too heavy to lug or carry. If you don’t, here are some lightweight ones that even connect to your phone for some cool photos!

Now that we’ve established your planning and packing strategies, let’s talk about the tips you’ll need once you’re in the Safari Park to make your visit even better.

Start Your Visit with the Africa Tram

The difference between the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the number of animals that run practically free-range in the Safari Park. This is mainly due to the park’s initial designation as a breeding facility for rare and endangered species. Hence, animals here have a lot more space to roam.

We always begin our Safari Park experience with an expedition on the Africa Tram. Not only is this a relaxing adventure on a path that takes visitors around some of the savanna habitats, but the 25-minute guided tram tour offers a myriad of information about the Park and the opportunity to see more wildlife in what’s designed to be close to their original habitat.

Tour tip: The Africa Tram is located in the African Outpost. You don’t need reservations, so it’s a first-come, first-serve experience. Try to get seats on the left side of the tram as this will give you the best opportunity for sightings and photos.

Must-See Animals and Exhibits

While there’s so much to see and explore animal-wise at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, we have our favorite areas and exhibits that shouldn’t be overlooked as these stand out as absolute winners in our book.

Walkabout Australia

When the Safari Park opened Walkabout Australia, we were so excited! Imagine walking a picturesque path without barriers between you and the Australian wildlife, where wallabies and kangaroos cross your paths and meander the grounds at leisure. Walkabout also includes a platypus exhibit, the only facility with these beautiful creatures seen outside of Australia.

Tiger Trail

Sumatran tigers call Tull Tiger Trail their home, representing one of the best-designed tiger enclosures in the world. Guests will find great photo spots and amazing viewing windows as these beautiful cats pace back and forth in front of the viewing windows, lounge by the water, cool off in the stream and stretch out on rock outcroppings overlooking the waterfalls.

Sadly, fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers exist in the wild and thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, over 25 tiger cubs have been born at the Safari Park. This is also one of the exhibits that you can visit on one of your last stops in the Park since tigers are mostly nocturnal and are more active at twilight.

World Gardens and Condor Ridge

Just a short distance stroll from Walkabout Australia and Tiger Trail leads to the highest vistas in the Safari Park featuring desert cacti and Native American fauna frequently seen in the Southwest. Here you’ll find the black-footed ferret, desert big-horned sheep, bald eagles, and the endangered California condor among others. And the area provides an expansive and impressive view of the Park and the surrounding San Pasqual Valley.

African Outpost

This meandering loop takes guests past a variety of African birds and mammals including waterfowl and includes the Lion Camp and Cheetah Run. You’ll find okapi, rhinos, nyalas, red river hogs, vultures and more.

Dining at the Safari Park

Visitors have 17 different dining experiences to select from in the Park with a variety of menus ranging from burgers and hot dogs to Mexican-inspired entrees, soups, salads, pizza and paninis.

Our favorite place to dine, however, is the open-air Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook offering incredible views of the African Plains as you enjoy tasty sandwiches, fresh salads and an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage of choice. You’ll get a much-needed break, will love the surroundings and savor the moment. Reservations are highly suggested.

Take a Safari Tour- Add-On Experiences

This will take some advance planning and reservations, but these up-close-and-personal add-on experiences are so worth it, even if you just choose one.

The San Diego Safari Park offers nine different safari experiences with 27 variations. They range from open-air caravan safaris, behind-the-scenes safaris, the fascinating cheetah run, and more to roar and snore safaris, which are overnight sleepover adventures in nature.

Our favorites and ones we recommend to locals and visitors are the Caravan Safari (the most popular tour at the Park) and the Roar and Snore, where you don’t have to get an expensive ticket to South Africa to hear the sounds of the elephants, lions and more nearby.

This is an ideal park to venture into these unique experiences and one of the main reasons visitors come to the Safari Park or return for a future visit.

There are a host of other activities in the Safari Park that can more than help fill in your entire day’s visit which include animal encounters, a Lorikeet Feeding Experience, a petting zoo, and so many charming shops in each of the areas of the Park.

Whenever you choose to visit and whatever activities or tours you decide to schedule in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, we hope your experience becomes a magnificent experience you’ll long remember.
